Anti-COVID-19 Clothing Is Here. Does It Work?

The COVID-19 pandemic is turning once-commonplace products like disinfectant wipes into prized commodities. Now companies are developing what they hope will be the next big thing: fabrics treated with chemicals that, if the claims are true, can kill the novel coronavirus.

While antimicrobial fabrics are not new — manufacturers of scrubs and other hospital items, for instance, have been using them for years — they are mainly designed to fight bacteria. Unlike viruses, bacteria can multiply on surfaces without a living host.

But the pandemic has created an interest in antiviral fabrics, and enterprising companies are responding. Textiles treated with chemicals aimed at destroying SARS-CoV-2 particles (SARS-CoV-2 is the official name of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19) are turning up in everything from face masks to men’s dress shirts.

The question is, can these items act as a shield to ward off COVID-19? Or should buyers beware?

How Antiviral Clothing Might Work

A front-runner in the antiviral textile business is Intelligent Fabric Technologies North America (IFTNA), a Toronto-based biotech company that produces a fabric treatment called Protex (officially known as PROTX2AV). The company’s lab tests have shown that Protex can kill 99.9 percent of SARS-CoV-2 particles within 10 minutes.

The company is currently awaiting approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to market Protex as effective at destroying the novel coronavirus.

“[Protex is] an important tool in breaking the chain of infection,” says, Giancarlo Beevis, president and CEO of IFTNA. “Some people say there are things that are going to save everyone from COVID-19. I don’t want to necessarily represent that,” he adds. But “every surface we can prevent this virus from living on, the better for us.”

He gives an example of how antiviral fabric might reduce the chance of infection for someone who touches a contaminated surface. “If someone sneezes on a bench, then you sit on it and wipe your hands on your pants and then touch your nose, that’s a big area where we can see [Protex] working. It’s prevention in day-to-day life.”

Protex-treated fabrics, he says, offer an additional measure of safety and peace of mind. “It’s not like you have to remember to put hand sanitizer on every two minutes,” he says.

Protex is forging ahead on product development and brand partnerships. In mid-June, Under Armour launched Sportsmask, a Protex-coated face covering. Companies like North Face and Careismatic Brands — a large maker of scrubs as well as retail clothing for Dickies and Cherokee — are also slated to release Protex-treated apparel in the coming months.

Later this year, IFTNA plans to launch a laundry product people can use to apply its antiviral chemical to their clothes at home, and by 2021, it will debut its own Underit line of Protex-treated activewear, like jogging pants and sports bras.

Competitors are also striving for a share of the worldwide antimicrobial clothing market, estimated to hit $20.5 billion by 2026, according to Global Market Insights. In the United Kingdom, the biotech company Virustatic claims its fabric treatment Virustatic Shield can protect against COVID-19. The Italian luxury fabric company Albini Group, which produces shirts for Armani and Prada, is making anti-COVID-19 fabrics using a Swiss textile technology called HeiQ Viroblock.

An Infectious Disease Specialist Weighs ln

Infectious diseases specialists are not convinced that antiviral clothes could have a significant protective function.

“Unless you’re licking your pants, no one is getting COVID-19 from their clothing,” says Daniel Kuritzkes, MD, chief of the division of infectious diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a professor of medicine at Harvard. “I would like to see a study showing that the pants [made with the new antiviral fabrics] were as effective as hand sanitizer in preventing transmissions — not in killing the virus, but in preventing transmissions.”

He adds, “I’m sure the material does inactivate the virus, but if so, so what? You’d still get [COVID-19] the way everyone else is getting COVID-19.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) consider person-to-person contact with respiratory droplets produced while talking, sneezing, or coughing to be the main mode of coronavirus transmission. “The numbers of cases of COVID-19 transmitted by people who happened to touch a surface where someone recently sneezed — cases that might be prevented by wiping your hands on an antiviral fabric — are minuscule compared with the cases transmitted by droplet transmissions,” Dr. Kuritzkes says. “That’s why the CDC has deemphasized surface transmission.”

The Bottom Line

Even if COVID-19-fighting apparel begins flooding stores, the protection trifecta of mask wearing, hand washing, and social distancing recommended by infectious disease specialists won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. The best-case scenario for antiviral fabrics is that they might offer another weapon in the arsenal.

That’s if people can even get their hands on these fabrics. This summer, the Under Armour Sportsmask became even more elusive than those coveted tubes of disinfectant wipes, with the first product release selling out in less than an hour.

90,000 Antiviral clothing: a new trend or attempt by brands to attract attention

The coronavirus epidemic has seriously damaged the fashion industry. But while some fashion houses are counting losses, others find unexpected advantages in the situation. So, some brands are going to attract the attention of buyers with special clothing and accessories that are designed to protect against viruses.

For example, Diesel has developed a new anti-virus fabric that kills up to 99% of viruses within two hours of contact.London-based company Apposta is appealing to consumers by claiming that the fabric of its shirts inhibits the transfer of bacteria and viruses, including Covid-19. These and other brands are betting that anti-virus fabrics, formerly used in medical uniforms and masks, will become increasingly popular in apparel.

When creating antiviral clothing, brands use special means for processing fabrics. Diesel, for example, uses the Swedish polygiene product.Silver is another popular element of antiviral agents, a technology being mastered by the Swiss company HeiQ. Scientists who conducted the first tests of solutions used to treat tissues are positive about the research results and the potential for technology diffusion.

And yet, international studies show that the coronavirus is more often transmitted by airborne droplets than through soft surfaces and clothing. In this regard, experts emphasize that in order to reduce the likelihood of infection, it is enough to wear a mask, gloves and observe social distancing.

In addition, the question of how to care for a new type of fabric may scare off potential consumers. As antibacterial and anti-virus clothing is a new area for many fashion brands, the question of how it will be regulated also arises: who will be responsible for the anti-virus properties of the new jeans or T-shirt?

However, researchers note great potential for further application of the technology. And this is not only about the COVID-19 epidemic: some formulations have long been used to combat odor-causing bacteria in tissues.Such materials can be washed less often, which has a positive effect on the environmental friendliness of clothes. Therefore, in the future, more and more brands will pay attention to antiviral fabrics that will be in demand by consumers.

Pharmacy “Raduga” offers to order home delivery in Yekaterinburg the most effective antiviral drugs that have a therapeutic effect against viral infections. All modern medicines are available at affordable prices.

There are two main groups of drugs that affect:

  1. DNA viruses;
  2. RNA viruses.

The first group includes drugs that help with diseases caused by viruses of cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex, chickenpox, hepatitis B and C.

The second group is represented by medicines used against various types of influenza, HIV, and respiratory infections.

The principle of antiviral action

  1. Different groups of antiviral drugs have a different mechanism of action. Depending on this, groups of drugs are distinguished: Affecting directly the virus. In recent years, inexpensive antiviral drugs have appeared, but they are effective due to the action on many strains of mutating viruses and changing the structure of the protein coat, which leads to a slowdown in the reproduction of viruses and recovery from the disease.
  2. The most popular and effective group of drugs. Interferons and their analogs are broad-spectrum antiviral agents: tablets, ointments, suppositories, all forms of this group help well in the fight against viral infections. These are ready-made protective substances of a protein nature. The popularity of interferons is well-deserved, there is not a single side effect that limits the intake of the drug. The effectiveness of the drugs is high both at the beginning of treatment in the prodromal period and at the height of the disease.
  3. Immunostimulants: drugs that increase the body’s defenses.
  4. Homeopathic antiviral agents.

Treatment regimen

There are many medicines available to help treat viral infections. If the causative agent is known, then treatment immediately begins with the drug that is most effective in this case of the disease. The most commonly diagnosed diseases are those caused by influenza viruses and respiratory infections. It is not always possible to determine which antiviral agent for colds will be most effective at the onset of the disease. In this case, the rule of therapy applies: from the first days, start complex treatment, which includes drugs of 3 groups:

  • drugs effective against RNA viruses;
  • interferons;
  • immunomodulators.

Our pharmacy works for people! Our preparations correspond to modern regimens for the treatment of viral infections. Medicines of all groups are available in any form of release. When ordering, medicines will be delivered to your home within Yekaterinburg and the region.

90,000 DIY Anti Virus Mask – What if the medical mask is not enough?

At the end of 2019 Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (NCP) from China deeply affects various sectors of society, and many countries and regions around the world are also affected. The war between humans and the new coronavirus is experiencing all aspects: with the delay in the start of the workload due to fear of infection, the International Trade Conference has been postponed. To get back to normal and orderly work and life, you need a medical mask that can be antiviral.

1 What is novel coronavirus pneumonia? What are the main transmission routes?

Novel coronavirus pneumonia – NCP is an acute respiratory infection caused by a new coronavirus infection. The main symptoms are fever, fatigue, dry cough, and shortness of breath. In most patients, symptoms are mild and some are critically ill, which can progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, difficulty correcting metabolic acidosis, and blood clotting dysfunction to death.

There are currently three transmission routes for the novel coronavirus pneumonia: direct transmission, aerosol transmission and contact transmission.
Direct transmission refers to infection caused by sneezing, coughing, speech droplets from the patient, and inhalation of exhaled gas directly from close range.
Aerosol dispersal refers to the mixture of droplets in the air with the formation of aerosols that cause inhalation after inhalation.
Contact transfer refers to the deposition of droplets on the surface of a product, contact with a contaminated hand, and then contact with the oral cavity, nasal cavity, eyes and other mucous membranes, resulting in infection.

2 What masks are there? What kind of mask should we use in our daily life?

Masks are classified into civilian masks and medical masks.A civilian mask is used to filter air into the mouth and nose to prevent harmful gases, odors, and droplets from entering the wearer’s mouth and nose. Civilian masks are mainly divided into cotton mask, non-woven mask, resin mask, activated carbon filter mask, activated carbon felt pillow mask. Medical masks can prevent the spread of most bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, and WHO recommends that medical personnel use protective masks (N95 masks) against particles to prevent exposure to the virus in hospital air.Medical masks are mainly divided into medical protective masks, medical surgical masks, general medical masks.

There are three commonly used masks on the market: cotton masks, medical surgical masks and medical safety masks (N95 masks), among which medical surgical masks can block 70% of bacteria, N95 masks can block 95% of bacteria, and cotton masks can block only 36% of bacteria. For this new coronavirus, it is recommended to choose the last two antiviral masks. If it is to go to public places, do not contact patients, it is recommended to wear medical surgical masks, do not need excessive N95 masks, but if contact with patients, not only wear N95 masks, but also wear protective clothing, wear safety glasses,

3 What what to do if antiviral mask is not enough?

Currently, the world is faced with a shortage of masks and a lack of opportunities for mask making machine, We need to know how to effectively use existing masks. For frontline medical personnel and workers, macro-control should be carried out from a national perspective, with particular attention to N95 masks, protective clothing to protect frontline epidemic workers. So for the general staff and employees who want to get started, want to get out, what if medical surgical masks are not enough?

3.1 Prolong the use of the antiviral mask.

According to the current international standard, disposable medical surgical masks can be used from 4 to 8 hours, up to a maximum of 10 hours, depending on the conditions of use.If it is medical personnel and other public places to work, usually wear 4 hours to change, if ordinary personnel go out, use for a short period of time, can use several times more.

In general, after 8 hours of using the disposable medical surgical mask, the PFE (particle filtration efficiency) decreased from 99% to 96%, and the airway resistance increased from 33 Pa to 42 Pa. If the mask is used for too long, it will not be able to effectively filter the virus and bacteria, leading to easy infection. So how do we expand the effective use of disposable masks during this unusual period of the epidemic?

3.1.1 Method of preserving masks

After a short use of the mask, if it needs to be used again, it can be hung in a clean, dry and ventilated place or placed in a clean, breathable paper bag. Masks should be kept separate, avoid contact with each other, and identify mask users.

3.1.2 Air drying by dry heat method

Dry the mask for 30 minutes using an oven, clothes dryer or hair dryer. The temperature should be between 60 70 and XNUMX ℃, because if the temperature is too high, it may damage the filter fiber of the mask, too low temperature will not be able to sterilize effectively.

3.1.3 Ultraviolet irradiation method

Sun exposure, if conditions exist, can also be irradiated by UV disinfection, so the corresponding increase in time, specific use time is based on the apparent difficulty in breathing.

3.2 Antiviral DIY masks.

During the special period of the new coronavirus, in order to protect everyone’s health and avoid contracting the virus, we need to wear a disposable medical mask for effective antiviral effects. However, the epidemic is serious, many people do not have enough masks or cannot buy masks, so if we need to go outside, we need to make our own masks. Next, let’s explore how to make a mask.

3.2.1 Mask structure, performance of each component

When people talk, cough, sneeze and spit, they vomit droplets that can be carried by various pathogens. Medical masks can effectively prevent infection, which is determined by its structure and material.

Medical masks are generally divided into three layers, three layers of nonwoven fabric with different structures and functions. The outer layer is a waterproof layer to block drops; the second layer is a filter layer that filters bacteria and airborne droplets, and the third layer is a moisture-absorbing layer that absorbs exhaled moisture. There are also two auxiliary components: a metal band and a dangling pair of ears, a metal band for the bridge of the nose, so that the mask and face form a closed space.

The mask must meet certain standards before it leaves the factory, the general standards EN 14683, EN 149, ASTM F2100, YY 0469, etc., and there are many test samples. Please refer to this article for the relevant content of the standard and test: Determination of quality and specification for the use of medical masks or N95 masks – for the new coronavirus。

For this new coronavirus, if we create a self-test, there is no need to test every test item. but there are a few key characteristics to be aware of.The anti-foam characteristics of the outer layer of the mask, the filtration efficiency of the virus and particulate matter in the middle layer of the mask, the moisture absorption characteristics of the inner layer of the mask and the breathing comfort of the entire mask, referring to the relevant standards, we give the following suggestions: Table 3.2.1

3.2.2 How to choose materials and how to make a mask?

Nonwovens we can contact in our daily life: cotton cloth, rag, napkin, wet face towel, magic towel, Pilose towel, cosmetic products, sanitary napkin and disposable sanitary napkin, as well as some regular packaging bags, sticky cloth film and so on. If we want to create masks for ourselves, we must check the corresponding characteristics of these common materials in accordance with Table 3.2.1 and select the appropriate materials. The relevant test tools are as follows:

Check the water resistance of the material with an impact tester Select a material with good fly protection characteristics. Check the fire resistance of the material with a 45 degree flammability tester to determine the safety. Check the breathability of the material with a medical mask differential pressure tester to find out the material with good breathing characteristics. After testing the nonwoven fabric with medical devices to test the mask, we recommend using the following materials to make your own masks: regular cotton cloth for the outer layer, felt or towel for the middle layer (if possible, choose a material made from polypropylene fiber) and medical gauze for the inner layer.

DIY mask steps:

Step 1: Cut the prepared material into a suitable shape, probably: 18cm * 9cm for adults, 15cm * 9cm for children.
Step 2: Align in order from the inside, middle and outside.
Step 3: Fold the top and bottom sides inward, the top edge can be added to the metal strip, leaving enough gap in the middle to penetrate the rope.
Step 4: Sewing, the finished mask is complete.

Note: Use a DIY mask only if you cannot buy a medical mask or N95 mask and need to go out.Replace it within four hours. Don’t add anything else to it. If someone around you cannot buy a mask, send him an article. If you want to buy a reliable mask, pay attention to this: www.testextextile.com/product/medical-face-mask

How not to get sick and what to do with a cold / City news / Moscow website

The weather in the capital is changing rapidly: temperature air rises and falls below zero, alternating between snow and rain. The risk of catching a cold or getting the flu is much higher under these conditions. This usually happens when the temperature drops from minus five to plus five degrees.

How not to catch a cold

Doctors advise to eat well, at least four to five times a day, eat more fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C. Dress during this period is necessary for the weather, trying not to get hypothermic. It is very important to choose the right footwear for autumn and winter, it is better for women not to wear boots or high-heeled boots. If you get your feet wet, it’s important to change into dry shoes as soon as possible.

Do not hesitate to wear medical masks or gauze bandages where there are many people, for example, in transport. But remember to change them every two to three hours. If in transport you notice a person with obvious signs of a cold (red eyes, runny nose, constant sneezing), then you should not come close to him. In order not to catch an infection, you need to try to move away from it at a distance of more than one meter.

It is important to observe all hygiene requirements: wash your hands more often, rinse your sinuses.Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth to prevent viruses from entering your body. Ventilate the area you are in regularly, and do wet cleaning at home. Wipe down common items such as phones and keys as often as possible.

Increases immunity and sports. People who exercise regularly can also catch the virus, but their symptoms are milder and they recover faster.

What to do if you already have a cold

With a cold, the body temperature rises, a feeling of chills, a runny nose, cough, headache and a feeling of general malaise may appear. In this case, you must stay at home and stay in bed. The main thing is to see a doctor right away. Only he can prescribe the correct treatment. Before the arrival of the doctor, it is recommended to drink plenty of fortified drinks (for example, water with lemon or cranberries). If the temperature is high (39-40 degrees) and there are signs of respiratory failure – a feeling of lack of air, shortness of breath and a drop in blood pressure, urgently call an ambulance.

How to protect yourself from influenza

Vaccination protects best against influenza. It is recommended to do it before the onset of the seasonal rise in incidence, preferably two to three months, so that the body has time to develop immunity after the injected drug.

If you have not been vaccinated, observe basic hygiene rules: wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, do wet cleaning at home, rinse your sinuses, regularly ventilate and humidify the air in the room, use medical masks in places where there are many people. It is important to avoid close contact with those who have signs of the disease: cough, runny nose, and others. It is also worth eating foods with a high content of vitamin C, and, on the recommendation of a doctor, using antiviral drugs and agents.

We treat the flu

The main symptoms of influenza are fever, chills, headache, increased fatigue, joint and muscle pain, cough, sore throat and nasal congestion. Self-medication for influenza cannot be dealt with. If you carry the disease on your legs, serious complications can develop. If the temperature is high (38-39 degrees), seek medical attention.

The most important thing with the flu is to drink as much fluids as possible to stay hydrated, but avoid coffee, tea and caffeinated cola. Even if you have no appetite, try to eat some simple foods like white rice or chicken broth.

What to do in case of hypothermia

If you stay in the cold for a long time or without moving, there is a high risk of hypothermia or even frostbite. It increases when you are wearing wet or tight shoes, light clothes, no headdress and scarf, when you are hungry or tired.Cold injury can be promoted by vascular disease, neuritis, and previous infectious diseases.

The majority of cold injuries are suffered by people under the influence of alcohol.

With hypothermia, a person feels chills, breathing and pulse become more frequent, blood pressure rises slightly, and goose bumps appear. If you stay in the cold for a long time, coordination of movements may be disturbed, as well as confusion of consciousness, and convulsions. In this case, you must immediately call a doctor.

The most important thing in case of hypothermia is to restore normal body temperature: go to a warm room, put on dry clothes, lie under a warm blanket. It is very important to keep your head covered as 30 percent of the heat dissipates through it.

You need a hot drink. You can take a warm bath, but you need to heat the water gradually, starting from a temperature of plus 28 degrees to plus 34–36. You can gently rub the body with a soft washcloth. The head and neck should be raised.

First aid for frostbite

According to doctors, the number of frostbite increases not with severe frost, but with temperature fluctuations. Most often, the feet are affected, in second place are the hands, then the nose, ears, and cheeks. The first manifestation of local frostbite is easy to miss. A person’s skin temperature drops, it turns pale, loses sensitivity, tingling or burning can be felt.
