Apples are not keto friendly. These fruits are high in fructose (a kind of sugar), and can easily knock you out of ketosis.

How Many Carbs In Apples?

Do apples have carbs? Without a doubt. So, just how many carbs are in an apple? The answer to that question, along with net carbs in apples, depends on the serving, size, and variety of your fruit.

How many carbs in a small apple?

How many carbs does an apple have if it’s small? One small apple contains 20.6 total carbs and 3.6 grams of fiber, giving it 17 grams of net carbs [*].

How many carbs in a medium apple?

Is a medium apple keto? Still no — the average medium apple has 20.7 grams of net carbs, and 25 total carbs [*].

How many carbs in a large apple?

When the fruit is large, are apples low carb? Nope. Large apples have 30.8 total carbs and 25.5 grams of net carbs [*].

Fermenting twice allows bacteria and yeast to consume almost all the sugar content, making it very keto friendly.

You don’t have to repress your love for apples when you decide to try a low-carb diet. Depending on the plan you choose, though, you will likely avoid all fruit for at least the first few weeks of the program. After that, pay attention to the number of carbs in different types of apples so you stay within your dietary allotment of carbohydrate.

Tip

You can eat apples on a low-carb diet, but you may not be able to include them until you’ve completed the initial phase of your diet, which for many low-carb plans is the first two to three weeks.

How Low-Carb Diets Work

The National Academies of Science recommends adults get 45 to 65 percent of their calories from carbohydrate, which amounts to 225 to 325 grams on a daily 2,000-calorie diet. The NAS also sets 130 grams as “adequate intake,” or the minimum amount you should have every day for good health. If you don’t follow a set diet, a range of between 50 and 150 grams of carbohydrate a day qualifies as “low carb,” according to a review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2007.

Whether do-it-yourself or established, a low-carb diet requires counting grams. On the Atkins 20 diet, you consume no more than 20 grams of net carbs in a day during the induction period, which can last two or more weeks. In Atkins 40, a less restrictive plan, you limit yourself to 40 grams a day. You calculate “net” carbs by subtracting the grams of fiber and sugar alcohols in a food from its total number of carb grams.

When you’re only eating 20 or 40 grams of carbs a day, only certain kinds of produce — primarily non-starchy vegetables — fit the bill. Fruits, which are higher in carbs, come into play after you’ve lost some initial weight and can allow yourself a higher daily net carb count.

Fruit in a Low-Carb Diet

Most low-carb diets restrict your fruit consumption during the initial period of adjustment to the diet. Atkins 20 diet allows you to start adding fruit in Phase Two, which begins when you are 15 pounds from your target weight – a period that can last two or more weeks. However, the fruits you add in are melon, berries and cherries, which are the lowest in net carbs. When you are 10 pounds from your weight-loss goal, you shift into Phase Three of Atkins, during which you can eat any fruit you like as long as you stay within the range of 50 to 80 grams of net carbs a day.

On Atkins 40, you can eat any fruit from the first day of the diet. South Beach, another popular low-carb diet, allows you to eat all fruits after you’ve completed the first two weeks of the plan.

Carbs in Apples

The number of grams of net carbs in a small apple varies slightly with the type you choose. Yellow and green apples like golden delicious and Granny Smith may be your best bets, with 15 and 16 grams of net carbs, respectively. Gala and red delicious apples come in at about 18 grams of net carbs, while Fuji is at the high end, with 21 grams. Leave the skin on your apple to increase its fiber content. Also, eating your apples in the form of applesauce makes them high carb; a cup of unsweetened applesauce contains 25 grams of net carbs. Dried apples have 34 grams of net carbs in a cup.

Eating Apples on a Low-Carb Diet

Avoiding apples for the length of your diet — or for life, if you decide to make low-carb eating permanent — may not be feasible for you, particularly if you love their taste and crunch. Depriving yourself can backfire and lead to derailing your goals. Instead, wait until you’re up to at least 50 grams of net carbs a day before you start adding apples into your regimen. Control your net carbs and boost an apple’s satiety by enjoying half a fruit with a tablespoon of almond butter or cream cheese; either adds only 1 gram of net carbs to your snack while also offering fat, and in the case of almond butter, a bit of protein.

An apple a day might keep the doctor away, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to keep you in ketosis. So what’s the deal, can you eat an apple on a low carb diet? Or will the carbs in apple cause you to run to the doctor wondering what the heck is going on?

Carbs in Apple

In a perfect world, all apples would be created equal. Because this is unfortunately NOT a perfect world, the carbs in apple will vary.  The size of the apple will affect it’s carb count, as well as the variety of apple.

Per the USDA database, these are the total carbs for various sizes of raw apples with the skin on:

  • A large apple (3 ¼” diameter) has 30.8g of total carbs, 5.4g of fiber, and 23.17g of sugar.
  • A medium apple (3” diameter) has 25.13g of total carbs, 4.4g of fiber, and 18.91g of sugar.
  • A small apple (2 ¾” diameter) has 20.58g of total carbs, 3.6g of fiber, and 15.48g of sugar.
  • An extra small apple (2 ½” diameter) has 13.95g of total carbs, 2.4g of fiber, and 10.49g of sugar.
  • Per 100 grams, apples have 13.81g of total carbs, 2.4g of fiber, and 10.39g of sugar.

As I said, the VARIETY of apple also plays a part in the carbs in apple. Per the USDA database, these are the total carbs in apples of various types (per 100g, with skin):

  • Fuji: 15.22g of total carbs (USDA)
  • Gala: 13.68g of total carbs (USDA)
  • Golden Delicious: 13.60g of total carbs (USDA)
  • Granny Smith: 13.61g of total carbs (USDA)
  • Red Delicious: 14.06g of total carbs (USDA)

While most apple varieties share similar amounts of total carbs, Fuji and Red Delicious apples have a higher amount of total carbs than expected! Sure, these apples taste sweeter, but they’re also more likely to affect your diet if you’re not careful!

Net Carbs in Apple

To calculate the net carbs in apple, we subtract the total dietary fiber from the total carbs. Pretty simple, huh?

The net carbs in apple are calculated based on the values from the USDA database. Your daily net carbs will likely fall between 20 and 50 grams, so these values are important!

  • A large apple has 25.4g of net carbs.
  • A medium apple has 20.73g of net carbs.
  • A small apple has 16.98g of net carbs.
  • An extra small apple has 11.55g of net carbs.
  • Per 100 grams, apples have 11.41g of net carbs.

Remember those outliers, Fuji and Red Delicious? Red Delicious apples have 11.76g of net carbs per 100 grams, and Fuji apples have 13.12g of net carbs per 100 grams! 

Are apples good carbs or bad carbs?

There’s a reason apples are likened to good health; they are a great food for a huge number of people! In a regular diet, apples have definitely marked their spot as a fruit that is both delicious AND nutritious. 

Raw apples are just that: raw. They are a whole food that do not contain refined carbohydrates. Their sugars are natural (not added), and they contain dietary fibers. 

However, in terms of the keto diet, there aren’t good carbs and bad carbs. A carb is a carb is a carb. Even the carbohydrates in whole, plant-based foods can affect nutritional ketosis.

Are apples OK on keto?

We’ve figured out what an apple will run you carb-wise, so now it’s time for the million dollar question: can you eat apples on keto? 

Given that the average limit is 20 grams of net carbs per day for ketosis to work it’s magic, and a medium size apple is 20.73 grams of net carbs, things don’t look very promising. Again, this is NOT because apples are a bad carb. Eating an apple will provide your body with sugar to burn instead of allowing it to target fat. 

If you desperately want an apple and nothing will satisfy that need, break out your kitchen scale! Measuring out the exact amount you are consuming will ensure that you are staying within your limit. You might only be able to eat a couple slices in order to maintain ketosis, so it is important to know the exact amount you consume.

Calories in Apple

Repeat after me: calories do matter! Limiting carbohydrate intake is necessary for achieving and maintaining nutritional ketosis. Understanding calorie intake is equally necessary for gaining and losing weight! Therefore, it is important that you are aware of the carbs in apple AND the calories in apple as well.

There are 52 calories in 100 grams of raw apple.

The range of calories is 53 calories for an extra small apple to 116 calories for a large apple. While the largest fruit is more than double the smallest, these numbers are still quite low!

Apple Nutrition

Now that we know the carbs in apple are high and the calories in apple are low, let’s check out how the nutrients rank.

Apples are high in dietary fiber, with one medium apple providing 4.4 grams. Apples also provide a good source of Vitamin C, Potassium, and antioxidants. While apples do include other vitamins and minerals, (Vitamins A, E, and K, Calcium, Folate, Iron, Magnesium, and Phosphorus to name a few), they are in smaller amounts.

Keto Apple Substitutes

Instead of risking everything on a tiny apple, here are some keto-friendly apple substitutes!

Nutrition: There are plenty of low-carb choices that provide similar (or better) nutrition than apples. Almonds, pecans, dried mushrooms, dried seaweed, grape leaves, and avocados are all high in both fiber and Potassium. Lemon peel, kumquats, raspberries, and blackberries are all high in Vitamin C.

Texture: Chayote squash is the number one low carb apple replacement! In fact, I have a recipe for keto apple pie filling that uses chayote and believe me, it’s spot on! Jicama and zucchini are also great texture substitutes.

Flavor: Again, chayote and jicama take the cake. While you might not be inclined to bite into these substitutes raw, they create an incredible flavor substitute in apple-based dishes.

If you’re trying to lose weight using the Keto Diet, one of the surprising things you will hear is that you shouldn’t eat apples. One medium apple has more than 20 grams of net carbs. That’s enough to blow your entire carb allotment for the day if you’re on Keto.

But this is where I think the Keto Diet is missing the boat. Apples are one of the best fruits you can eat to lose weight — even if you’re on Keto. Let me explain.

I’ve told you in the past that I’ve always struggled to keep weight off. But I’ve found two very successful ways to eat that will not only drop the weight, but keep it off. And both of them require eating a lot of apples.

The first time I dropped over 35 pounds using the Lock It In diet. I’ve told you about this diet before and it worked incredibly well. The folks at our clinic who run this program can work with anyone in the U.S. And a number of people have found success using it.

This diet is completely customized to each person, so you’ll lose the weight no matter what your body type is. When I did it, I used a low-fat, low-carb diet that incorporated a ton of apples. In fact, any time I was stuck — my weight plateaued — I would eat nothing but steak and apples for an entire day. The change in diet always worked to reboot my system and begin the weight loss again.

After losing the weight, I went through an incredibly stressful time and, as a comfort eater, I gained the weight back. So I started back on Lock It In, but this time my body has done much better on a Keto Diet. However, I still ate apples. And I still dropped the weight. In fact, I lost weight faster when I ate apples than when I didn’t.

Obviously, eating 20 grams of carbs is a concern for anyone on Keto — or any diet for that matter. So why do apples help you lose weight with such a huge carb load?

It’s important to remember that when it comes to weight loss, it doesn’t really matter if you count carbs or calories. Sometimes counting both is the best way to go. At least it is with apples.

Apples have several things going for them that your body just loves. First, they contain a lot of water. Nearly 86% of the apple is water. Second, they have a lot of fiber (4 grams in a medium apple). Third, they don’t carry a lot of calories. And fourth, apples have a relatively low glycemic index (GI), which is a measure of how much blood sugar levels rise after eating. Apples have a GI of 38, compared to 72 for watermelon. So even though they have 20 grams of carbs, it’s a slow-burning carb that doesn’t affect ketones as dramatically as other carb-rich foods.

That doesn’t mean apples are always Keto friendly. Different people will respond differently. But not everyone should throw apples out the window when they eat Keto. Here’s the evidence:

There are several well-done studies that show how women with excess weight who follow a low-calorie or weight-reduction diet will lose weight better when they eat apples. For instance, one study had women regularly eat apples, pears, or oat cookies. Each of these foods have a similar fiber, carb, and calorie content. After 12 weeks, the fruit groups lost 2.7 pounds (1.2 kg), but the oat group showed no significant weight loss.

In another study, researchers gave 50 people three apples, three pears, or three oat cookies per day. After 10 weeks, the oat group saw no weight change, but those who ate apples lost two pounds. But that’s not all. The apple group also reduced overall calorie intake by 25 calories per day, while the oat group ending up eating slightly more calories. Why? Because apples tend to be more filling and make you feel full, while cookies make you crave more sugar/carbs.

There’s more. A four-year study in 124,086 adults found that increased intake of fiber and antioxidant-rich fruits, such as apples, was associated with weight loss. Those who ate apples lost an average of 1.24 pounds.

While these weight loss numbers may not sound impressive, the researchers didn’t require any other changes in diet. When you couple eating apples with a Keto Diet, you’ll see the weight fall off even faster.

Researchers in another study have found that weight loss is good for a lot more than just weight loss. And it’s not just another fruit. In fact, it’s much better than many other fruits and veggies for promoting a healthy body and fighting illness. Compared to other fruits and veggies, apples are consistently associated with a reduced risk of heart, lung, and metabolism problems. They also have very strong antioxidant activity, decrease lipid oxidation, and even lower cholesterol.

There’s also a growing body of evidence that apples can protect your brain against memory loss — even severe forms of memory loss. That’s because apples protect the brain from the effects of free radicals.

Several years ago, researchers from the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Center for Cellular Neurobiology and Neurodegeneration Research examined the brain protective effect of apples. They published their results in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. The scientists on this team have been studying the antioxidants in apples for several years.

In this study, the researchers answered the question of whether apple juice is protective against oxidative brain damage. They found that oxidative brain damage leads to memory loss. This study showed that when aged mice consumed diets supplemented with apple juice, they performed significantly better on the maze tests. They also had less oxidative brain damage than those on the standard diet.

Drinking apple juice fully protected the aged mice from the free-radical damage caused by a nutrient deficient diet. In addition, stronger mental acuity resulted when the aged mice consumed the human equivalent of two to three cups of apple juice or approximately two to four apples per day.

In earlier studies, this group of researchers showed that in cell cultures apple juice prevented the brain damage induced by amyloid beta protein. Increases of amyloid beta contribute to the decline in cognitive performance during normal aging and in neurodegenerative conditions.

We already know apples are packed with vitamins. But much of their protective effect is attributed to phytochemicals. These are non-nutrient plant compounds and include carotenoids, flavonoids, isoflavonoids, and phenolic acids. Phytochemicals may play a key role in reducing chronic disease risk.

Apples also contain abundant levels of quercetin, catechin, chlorogenic acid (all of which are strong antioxidants), and polyphenols, which are powerful free-radical fighters.

Of course, studies have shown that the apple peel is the most abundant source of nutrients. The concentration of phytochemicals varies greatly between the apple peels and the apple flesh. While the flesh does contain some phytochemicals, they are found in much lower concentrations than in the peels.

In addition to protection your brain, apples are great for protecting your muscles, including your heart (which is a muscle). This is because of a little-known molecule that actually reduces muscle atrophy. This is important when you’re losing weight, as many diets actually reduce muscle. But this molecule, known as ursolic acid, helps keep your muscles strong even when you’re losing weight.

If you are sedentary, or just losing muscle as a consequence of aging, you want to know about ursolic acid. It can make the difference between building muscles with exercise or remaining flabby and frustrated at the lack of results. I’m not talking here about appearances. Having weaker muscles means you’re not able to walk, exercise, and carry groceries as easily. They also increase your risk for falls.

A mouse study conducted at the University of Iowa found that ursolic acid increased the size and strength of muscles in older mice. In another study, researchers gave ursolic acid to mice that fasted. They found that it protected the mice against muscle atrophy. When they gave ursolic acid to non-fasting mice for five weeks, their muscles grew.

Ursolic acid appears to be a promising body recomposition agent. Animal studies found it is able to both increase muscle mass and decrease fat. While there are no human studies to date, information from animal studies indicate that it makes sense to supplement your diet with ursolic acid.

There are several forms of apples to choose from: the whole fruit, apple polyphenol supplements (powerful antioxidants), apple juice, dried apples, and concentrated apple peel. Each works just a little differently, but all of them can be effective. Keep your juice intake low, as you’re missing the fiber to slow sugar metabolism. So it might spike your insulin levels.

One problem with using whole or dried apples is their high sugar content. Another problem is that fresh apples aren’t always fresh. They’ve been stored. All commercial apples are cold-stored in warehouses — some for many months. But a study on apples found that the phenolics and antioxidant activity decreases after the first three months. This means that many commercial apples have little or no polyphenols.

You can avoid this problem by taking a concentrate made from apple peel. Several studies have shown that the most beneficial nutrients for the heart are in the apple peel — not in the flesh of the fruit. The peels contain polyphenols and other natural protective chemicals. This is why you should never peel your apples. In my opinion, a whole food has the advantage of containing co-factors that may not yet be recognized.

If you’re on a Keto Diet and have been avoiding apples, you might want to give them a try and see if your weight loss continues. If not, switch to a concentrated apple peel supplement. It won’t affect your ketones and you’ll get a lot of the muscle benefits.

Unfortunately, a medium sized apple can have around 20g of net carbs, making a dent in your total carbs for the day on a keto diet. I’ve had many friends ask me if it’s even healthy to avoid eating fruits in my keto diet. Fruits are typically pretty sweet which really limits your selection.

Intuitively, if you’re eating an apple as part of your breakfast, you’ll be blowing past your allowable keto carb intake in a hurry. The thing about fruits is that most of them are very dense in sugar (particularly fructose, which is actually digested differently than most sugars).

Some of the most popular fruits such as apples and bananas simply contain too many carbs to be enjoyed with the keto diet. If an individual wishing to become a keto dieter enjoys any of the forbidden fruit on our list, then it is a sacrifice they will have to make to stimulate and maintain ketosis.

If you eat a large apple (about 25 grams of carbs) or a medium-sized banana (24 grams of carbs), you will have exceeded your daily carb limit on a keto diet. Fruit = Nature’s candy . On a keto diet you can have some berries every so often and it won’t likely take you out of ketosis. You might even be able to eat a few cherries or a small plum.
