Azo turn pee orange. Phenazopyridine: Uses, Side Effects, and Precautions for Urinary Discomfort Relief
How does phenazopyridine work to relieve urinary symptoms. What are the common brand names for phenazopyridine. When should phenazopyridine not be used. How should phenazopyridine be taken and stored properly. Which drugs and foods should be avoided while using phenazopyridine.
Understanding Phenazopyridine: A Urinary Symptom Relief Medication
Phenazopyridine is a medication primarily used to alleviate symptoms associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs) and other urinary problems. This oral medication is known for its ability to provide relief from pain, burning sensations, and discomfort in the urinary tract.
The chemical name of this medication is pronounced as fen-ay-zoe-PIR-i-deen. It’s important to note that while phenazopyridine can effectively manage symptoms, it does not treat the underlying cause of urinary tract infections or other urinary disorders.
How does phenazopyridine work?
Phenazopyridine acts as a local analgesic, meaning it provides pain relief specifically in the urinary tract. It works by directly affecting the lining of the urinary tract, reducing inflammation and discomfort. This targeted action allows for quick symptom relief without systemic effects on the body.
Brand Names and Variations of Phenazopyridine
Phenazopyridine is available under various brand names, making it accessible to consumers through different pharmaceutical companies. Some of the common brand names include:
- Azo Standard
- Azo Urinary Pain Relief
- Azo Urinary Tract Health
- Baridium
- Leader Urinary Pain Relief
- Preferred Urinary Pain Relief
- Pyridium
- Quality Choice Azo
- Rite Aid Urinary Pain Relief
- Urinary Pain Relief
- Woman’s Wellbeing UTI Relief
It’s worth noting that this list may not be exhaustive, and other brand names might exist in different regions or markets.
Contraindications: When to Avoid Phenazopyridine
While phenazopyridine is generally safe for most people, there are certain situations where its use is contraindicated. The primary contraindication for phenazopyridine is a known allergy to the medication.
Can people with allergies use phenazopyridine?
Individuals who have previously experienced an allergic reaction to phenazopyridine should not use this medication. Allergic reactions can range from mild skin irritations to severe anaphylactic responses, which can be life-threatening. It’s crucial to inform your healthcare provider about any known allergies before starting phenazopyridine treatment.
Additionally, patients with certain medical conditions may need to exercise caution or avoid phenazopyridine altogether. These conditions include:
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- G6PD deficiency
- Pregnancy (especially in the late stages)
Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting phenazopyridine, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are taking other medications.
Proper Usage and Dosage Guidelines for Phenazopyridine
To ensure the safe and effective use of phenazopyridine, it’s essential to follow the prescribed dosage and administration guidelines. Here are some key points to remember:
How should phenazopyridine be taken?
Phenazopyridine is typically taken orally in tablet form. The medication should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. It’s important not to crush, chew, or break the tablets, as this can affect the medication’s release and efficacy.
To minimize the risk of stomach upset, phenazopyridine can be taken with food. However, if you don’t experience any gastrointestinal discomfort, it’s perfectly fine to take it on an empty stomach as well.
What is the typical dosage for phenazopyridine?
The dosage of phenazopyridine can vary depending on the specific formulation and the patient’s individual needs. Generally, the recommended dosage for adults is:
- 200 mg three times daily
- Or as prescribed by your healthcare provider
It’s crucial to follow your doctor’s instructions regarding dosage and duration of treatment. Phenazopyridine is usually prescribed for short-term use, typically not exceeding two days unless otherwise directed by a healthcare professional.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you forget to take a dose of phenazopyridine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects.
Storage and Disposal of Phenazopyridine
Proper storage and disposal of phenazopyridine are essential to maintain its effectiveness and ensure safety. Here are some guidelines to follow:
How should phenazopyridine be stored?
Store phenazopyridine tablets at room temperature, away from direct light and moisture. Keep the medication in its original container, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Avoid storing phenazopyridine in the bathroom, as the humidity can affect the medication’s stability.
What’s the best way to dispose of unused phenazopyridine?
If you have leftover or expired phenazopyridine, it’s important to dispose of it properly. Do not flush the medication down the toilet or pour it down the drain unless specifically instructed to do so. Instead, consult your pharmacist, doctor, or local waste disposal company for guidance on the best disposal method in your area.
Many communities offer drug take-back programs, which are the safest way to dispose of unused medications. If such a program is not available, you may be able to dispose of the medication in the household trash, following these steps:
- Mix the medication with an undesirable substance like used coffee grounds or kitty litter.
- Place the mixture in a sealed plastic bag or container to prevent the drug from leaking.
- Throw the container in your household trash.
- Remove or scratch out all personal information on the empty medication container before disposing of it.
Potential Drug Interactions and Dietary Considerations
When taking phenazopyridine, it’s important to be aware of potential interactions with other medications and dietary considerations. These interactions can affect the efficacy of phenazopyridine or increase the risk of side effects.
Which medications may interact with phenazopyridine?
Phenazopyridine may interact with various medications, including:
- Antibiotics (especially sulfonamides)
- Anticoagulants (blood thinners)
- Certain pain medications
- Some antacids
It’s crucial to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. This information allows your doctor to assess potential interactions and adjust your treatment plan if necessary.
Are there any dietary restrictions while taking phenazopyridine?
While there are no specific food restrictions associated with phenazopyridine, it’s generally recommended to maintain a balanced diet and stay well-hydrated while taking this medication. Drinking plenty of water can help flush out the urinary system and may enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.
It’s worth noting that phenazopyridine can cause a temporary orange or red discoloration of urine and sometimes feces. This discoloration is harmless but can stain clothing or other fabrics. Be cautious when handling items that may come into contact with urine while taking this medication.
Side Effects and Precautions of Phenazopyridine Use
Like all medications, phenazopyridine can cause side effects in some individuals. While many people tolerate the medication well, it’s important to be aware of potential adverse reactions and take necessary precautions.
What are the common side effects of phenazopyridine?
Common side effects of phenazopyridine may include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Stomach upset
- Skin reactions (rash, itching)
- Orange or red discoloration of urine
These side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own. However, if they persist or worsen, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider.
Are there any serious side effects to watch out for?
While rare, some individuals may experience more serious side effects when taking phenazopyridine. These can include:
- Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
- Hemolytic anemia (especially in individuals with G6PD deficiency)
- Liver problems
- Kidney problems
If you experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, severe skin reactions, unusual bruising or bleeding, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine, seek medical attention immediately.
What precautions should be taken while using phenazopyridine?
To ensure safe use of phenazopyridine, consider the following precautions:
- Inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially kidney or liver disease.
- If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using phenazopyridine.
- Be aware that phenazopyridine can interfere with certain laboratory tests, particularly those involving urine analysis. Inform your healthcare provider that you’re taking this medication before undergoing any tests.
- Avoid wearing contact lenses while taking phenazopyridine, as it may cause discoloration.
- Use caution when operating machinery or driving, as phenazopyridine can cause dizziness in some individuals.
Long-term Use and Alternatives to Phenazopyridine
While phenazopyridine is effective for short-term symptom relief, it’s not intended for long-term use. Understanding the limitations of this medication and exploring alternative options is crucial for comprehensive urinary health management.
Is phenazopyridine suitable for long-term use?
Phenazopyridine is generally recommended for short-term use, typically not exceeding two days. Prolonged use of this medication can mask underlying conditions and may increase the risk of side effects. If urinary symptoms persist beyond a few days, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment.
What are some alternatives to phenazopyridine for urinary discomfort?
For individuals seeking alternatives to phenazopyridine or looking for long-term solutions for urinary health, several options are available:
- Cranberry supplements: May help prevent UTIs in some individuals
- D-mannose: A naturally occurring sugar that may help prevent bacterial adhesion in the urinary tract
- Probiotics: Can help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the urinary system
- Herbal remedies: Such as uva ursi or bearberry leaf, which have traditionally been used for urinary health
- Lifestyle modifications: Including staying hydrated, practicing good hygiene, and urinating after sexual activity
It’s important to note that while these alternatives may be helpful, they should not replace proper medical evaluation and treatment for persistent urinary symptoms. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement or treatment regimen.
In conclusion, phenazopyridine serves as a valuable tool in managing urinary discomfort, but its use should be guided by proper medical advice and adherence to safety guidelines. By understanding the medication’s benefits, potential risks, and alternatives, individuals can make informed decisions about their urinary health management in consultation with their healthcare providers.

9 Best UTI Over The Counter Products
Best urinary tract infection (UTI) over-the-counter (OTC) products available in the USA are:
- FDA-approved UTI products such as AZO & Cystex to relieve symptoms
- Ibuprofen to decrease inflammation
- D-Mannose, Garlic, and homeopathy to supplement UTI treatment & prevention.
Important disclosure: While there are numerous over the counter UTI products, the FDA only approves antibiotics as a treatment for a urinary tract infection (UTIs). Also, while you can buy many supplements and homeopathic remedies without a prescription (aka “over-the-counter”), the official definition of an over-the-counter drug is slightly different. Only when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes the safety and effectiveness of an ingredient for a particular diagnosis, then a product containing the said ingredient in an appropriate amount could be called an over-the-counter drug for the specified illness. This is not the case with most products containing D-Mannose, cranberry, or Uva Ursi. Also, if you are looking for an over-the-counter solution for your UTI because you are tired of antibiotics, know that there are some safe non-antibiotic drugs available with a prescription through a compounding pharmacy, such as SSKI.
So, what if you can’t get your hands on the right antibiotic immediately? Or what if you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere and can’t see a doctor right away? I’m sure you wonder if OTC UTI medicine works and if it can cure the infection. The answer is “maybe”.
Summary
First of all, there are three groups of UTI over-the-counter products available without a prescription.
- Products that reduce symptoms but do not cure the infection (made by big pharmaceutical companies).
- Natural remedies that you won’t find in pharmacies, but rather in stores like Whole Foods, Sprouts, and on Amazon.
- Supplements that could help prevent your UTI from recurring.
By the way, if you are looking for an OTC UTI solution because you are uninsured, try this $20 online prescription service, licensed in 25 states (this is not an affiliate link).
Precaution:
If you decide to try any UTI OTC products, remember to go to your doctor if:
- Your UTI symptoms do not disappear in two or three days
- You experience back pain, nausea, or fevers and chills
If you have any of these, don’t attempt self-treatment and see a doctor immediately:
- Chronic health issues or any disease of the kidneys or bladder
- You are pregnant
- You are trying to help a young child with a UTI
It’s just not worth the risk!
In most cases, antibiotics are required to kill the bacteria that cause a UTI. If left untreated, a UTI can spread to your kidneys or enter your bloodstream, causing a severe infection.
This can require hospitalization and IV medication to save your life.
Infections that spread to the kidneys can cause permanent damage and even life-endangering sepsis.
#1 AZO test strips
This is a quick test to help you determine if you have a UTI. If you have the tell-tale signs of burning when you pee, urgency and frequency, it may be best to just get a urine culture since OTC test strips are not very accurate. While the Azo strips are similar to the one used by your doctor, your doctor should always verify the test results with a wet mount microscopy test and urine culture.
You only need to verify that your treatment is successful if your symptoms don’t go away. You can still have a positive Azo test, even if your UTI is gone, which may mean unnecessary additional antibiotics. If you do use the Azo strips, make sure to test your urine before taking AZO or Cystex pills as they might affect the accuracy of the test: AZO Urinary Tract Infection Test Strips.
Are OTC UTI test strips accurate?
If your test is negative, but you are still experiencing UTI symptoms, you may still have a UTI. OTC UTI test strips are actually not that accurate when you have full-blown UTI or if you have a history of frequent UTIs. Since these tests were designed as a screening tool, not a diagnostic test, the might show you wrong results (when a test is a false positive or false negative).
When is OTC UTI test more accurate?
- When I have UTI symptoms
- When I do not have UTI symptoms

#2 AZO Urinary Pain Relief
® Maximum Strength Tablets
Phenazopyridine hydrochloride is the active ingredient of this OTC medication for urinary pain, a chemical which, when excreted into the urine, has a local analgesic effect.
AZO Urinary Pain Relief® Maximum Strength Tablets, unfortunately, does nothing to fight the infection, but only masks the symptoms. Do not take it for longer than three days and don’t take it if you have liver problems. If you “cover up” your symptoms, you might not notice that your UTI is getting worse.
Phenazopyridine is also responsible for the bright orange color of your urine, that indicates the medicine has reached your bladder.
Make sure to not wear white underwear or contact lenses (yes, you read that right), since this active ingredient can permanently discolor them.
Keep in mind that some animal studies demonstrate a possible link between phenazopyridine and cancer in female rats. “Phenazopyridine hydrochloride is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity from studies in experimental animals” according to National Toxicology program report.
AZO Urinary Pain Relief® Maximum Strength Tablets contains 97.5 mg of Phenazopyridine per dose.
AZO products to fight first UTI symptoms
#3 AZO Urinary Pain Relief
®
Similar to the previous product by AZO, this one contains Phenazopyridine as an active ingredient, just a lower dose (95 mg).
Therefore, AZO Urinary Pain Relief has the same side-effects and method of action. It is also purely analgesic, containing no antimicrobial ingredient, and is sold at a lower price, as it contains less Phenazopyridine per dose.
There are no other ingredients that add value and the same possible carcinogenic effects associated with using Phenazopyridine.
#4 AZO Urinary Tract Defense™
This is a relatively new OTC drug that has appeared in 2016 in pharmacies all over the USA and also could be ordered on Amazon.
Once you swallow it, Methenamine (the main active ingredient) will work by slowing down the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the urinary tract.
When exposed to acidic urine, Methenamine turns into formaldehyde to kill the bacteria, but it’s not strong enough to eliminate an infection completely. It can’t cure an active infection but may slow down its progress.
AZO Urinary Tract Defense™ has been created to prevent UTIs, as well as to provide quick relief at the first signs of infection.
On top of this, Sodium salicylate, an analgesic, also acts as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
Taking an NSAID could help to reduce inflammation while fighting a bladder infection. This analgesic, though, will not change the color of your urine and is not linked to cancer.
Quick Tip: In order for AZO Urinary Tract Defense™ to work to its full potential, you’d need acidic urine. For that, take Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) with the drug.
An alternative to AZO Urinary Tract Defense™ in Canada, Europe, or Australia is Hiprex, which works similarly.
#5 Cystex Urinary Pain Relief Tablets
Cystex Urinary Pain Relief Tablets is yet another product that contains Methenamine, and therefore works in the same way as AZO Urinary Tract Defense™.
The dose of Methenamine in both products is identical (162 mg) and both contain the same amount of Sodium salicylate (which is a sodium salt of salicylic acid).
Cystex Urinary Pain Relief Tablets will not change the color of the urine as some other OTC medications do.
#6 Cystex With Cranberry
This is a tricky product that has some useful ingredients, right alongside its marketing gimmicks. The ingredients include:: Cranberry Concentrate, D-Mannose, Sodium Ascorbate and Ascorbic Acid (as sources of Vitamin C), FOS and Bromelain.
Other ingredients include filtered water, glycerin, malic acid, l-glutathione, natural fruit and vegetable color, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), sucralose, and ethyl maltol.
I would recommend buying Cystex mainly because it has D-Mannose and it’s not easy to find D-mannose in a conventional pharmacy. So if this is your only option, go for it.
I personally do not appreciate that it contains sucralose and preservatives. Plus it is unclear how much D-Mannose it actually has. All this makes it a very expensive and questionable D-Mannose cocktail.
Haven’t heard of D-Mannose? Here is my interview with Dr. Wright, who was the first physician in the USA to discover D-Mannose and regularly prescribes it to his patients since the 1980s.
#7 Ibuprofen
When the infection starts, your bladder responds by becoming inflamed, and that’s why you experience pain and increased the urgency to urinate.
Ibuprofen has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties and, it’s argued, could help you cope with the symptoms while your body fights the infection.
A couple of studies (here and here) show improved results and shorter symptoms when a patient used Ibuprofen to treat uncomplicated UTIs. Patients that had success with this treatment took 400 mg, three times a day for three days.
However, while some patients were able to resolve their UTIs with NSAIDs, the rate of kidney infections in the group using Ibuprofen was higher than in the people who took antibiotics.
Pay attention to any flank pain if taking Ibuprofen as a UTI OTC treatment. Remember, If you choose to self-treat a UTI with an NSAID you might be at a higher risk of kidney infection.
#6 D-Mannose: a natural UTI over the counter treatment supplement
D-Mannose is a naturally-occurring sugar that is safe to take, has almost no side-effects. You can start taking it immediately since it is available as an over-the-counter supplement.
D-Mannose works by adhering to E. coli bacteria and making it easier for you to flush the bacteria out when you pee.
Pro Tip: D-Mannose will only work if your UTI is caused by E. coli. There is no guarantee that D-Mannose will help you, which is why it is considered a supplement, not an OTC drug.
While not every pharmacy sells D-Mannose, you can definitely find it in holistic pharmacies and stores that sell organic food and supplements (see Where to buy D-Mannose).
#7 Natural plant-based antibacterials: Garlic, Uva Ursi.
Allicin, isolated from garlic essential oil, has potency against bacterial biofilms and has demonstrated broad antibacterial activity.
Every pharmacy has garlic supplements, but if all else fails, head to any grocery store and buy raw garlic instead.
Raw garlic is as effective as a supplement and requires no prescription.
Pro Tip: If you are using raw garlic, make sure to smash it well to release the Allicin. Also, make sure to eat garlic with food. You can take it before, after, or during a meal, but do not take it when you are fasting.
Read about the correct dosage of garlic for UTI and precautions when using garlic to supplement your UTI treatment.
Uva Ursi is another herbal supplement that is widely accepted (especially in Europe) as a natural supplement that could help you fight UTI-causing bacteria. Learn how to pick the right Uva Ursi product and how to take it for UTI supplementation in this post: Uva Ursi Myths and Facts.
#8 UTI E-Drops (aka E-Drops Nano)
UTI E-Drops is a European product, and it has been on the market in Central and Eastern Europe since the early 1980s.
In December 2017, after three years of checking supporting data, Health Canada approved E-Drops Nano for distribution in North America.
This product is made of food-grade essential oils of Juniper, Lavender, Eucalyptus and Fir needle. According to the manufacturer of E-Drops Nano, the elixir “works against tough strains of E. coli that antibiotics sometimes can’t help.”
#9 Homeopathic UTI over the counter treatment
Homeopathy treats the whole patient, not a symptom or group of symptoms. If you ask a homeopath, they prefer to prescribe remedies based on individual patient assessment, not just isolated symptoms. Therefore, a homeopathic doctor would prefer to prescribe you a remedy uniquely addressing your individual health needs.
Purchasing an off-the-shelf remedy is considered to be less effective than taking one recommended specifically for you.
However, there are several widely-recognized homeopathic UTI OTC remedies readily available. Many naturopathic doctors find the following remedies helpful for their patients with UTI symptoms.
Cantharis
Advised for those who experience a constant, strong urge to urinate with a sharp pain right before and after peeing. Other symptoms include a sensation of bladder fullness but only being able to release a few drops of urine when peeing.
Nux vomica
This remedy is advised for those who feel a strong urge to urinate, burning or cramping pain in the bladder area, and an itching sensation while the urine passes.
Other notable symptoms that can be helped include irritability, impatience, and feeling cold. This remedy is great if your symptoms are relieved by hot baths or with a hot bottle applied to your lower abdomen.
Sarsaparilla
This remedy is often useful in cystitis and may help when symptoms are unclear, or if other remedies have not been effective.
Some OTC products do not directly affect the progress of an acute infection, but could help to prevent UTIs in the future:
- Special probiotics to restore vaginal flora
- Topical estrogen
- Herbal supplements to promote bladder health
- Bacterial biofilm-fighting molecules
However, it is crucial to address the reason you had a UTI happened in the first place.
There are multiple factors that can make you more prone to UTIs, such as certain contraceptive methods (a certain type of condoms, lube, IUD), diseases that affect vaginal health (BV or yeast infection) etc.
Therefore, a holistic approach to UTI prevention is more effective than just treating an acute infection.

White guard chains
… Two perches birch footbridge
They returned to me as robins again…
But that was once. Bare thin legs in blue shorts paced the parade ground in the hope of winning first place. They didn’t, but everyone laughed, and not everyone had thin legs, some even had pleasantly plump ones, well, you like those. Not like that, I just like it when there is also a little bit of meat, well, it’s appetizing so that everything looks, otherwise the reeds, it’s like, will break and that’s it. And they sang funny about perches. But only once. And usually something familiar from childhood got. Like Shchors or Young Fighter. It was precisely in this fighter that they sang about some unknown White Guard chains, on which the detachment fearlessly galloped. Why would the White Guards need chains, they are not sailors, to hang anchors on them, and what their economic purpose was, Bun did not understand. It seemed to him that the whites were standing and holding them in their hands, and for some reason they had to ride red. These chains, sparkling in the distance by the river with their stainless steel, excited the imagination, and every time, leaving the camp in the evening and looking from the hill at the darkening forests around, he imagined here and there the flashing lights of these chains. The bun shivered and returned to the territory through the familiar hole in the fence at an accelerated pace.
And in the evening, after lights out, when the counselor turned off the lights in the ward, and outside the window the sky glowed like a red fire, or it rained endlessly, so that the windows reflected only what was happening inside, but did not want to become at least a little transparent, only if from the back side, snuggle close to them, from the street, that is, only then you can see, but it’s better not to look at the window, because if someone snuggles up, from there, it’s better not to meet his eyes, one girl met, so slumped for life, and the boy is alone, he is generally later. And the maniac also walks and sticks to the glass with his face in order to better see who is inside, and the wind, if it makes noise and the birds croak, then it is he who is coming, the birds always croak when he is looking for a victim, well, not a victim, there were no victims then, who seeks to kill or drag into the forest. Pioneer leader last year, alone, not here, nearby, shhhh, again the wind, they heard. And about a black, black city, about a black, black street, about a black, black house, it’s like. And you? where with blankets, why don’t you lie by the window, today he won’t come, today the witch from the pond, she calls everyone to her, beckons when you bathe, and then forget-me-nots at this place where the girl cried for her brother.
Such blue flowers, there are many of them. A bun once outside the territory saw such a small pond in the forest, and the wooden walkways are rotten near the shore, and everything is in the forget-me-nots, and the water is dark, reflects their delicate color, and where the reflection does not fall, there seems to be a great depth, and you look, you look into her, and she seemed to be looking at you from there, or someone else, and once Bunochka looked, looked, and it seemed that someone swam up from the other side of the dark surface, and also began to look at him, for a long time and intently, and the eye did not tear off, and the desire to leave, and suddenly it seemed, it didn’t even seem, it just flashed in my head:
– Turtles!
And as soon as the consciousness lit up with this, the voices of girls, one-squad, called out to him, do not look, they say, for a long time into the dark water, otherwise there will be forget-me-nots in your place then in a turquoise field to bloom. And so Bunochka went away without turning around, but he wanted to.
Unpleasant, some silhouettes, low tapping and different voices….
Once a mother sent her daughter to the store
to get a toilet, and severely punished
do not buy black toilet. But in the store
there were no toilets in other colors, and the girl
bought a black one. I went to the toilet at night ,
then my grandmother went and did not return,
then my brother went and did not return.
then the girl herself went to the toilet and sees
that the whole family is standing around the toilet, peeing,
and cannot stop.
Bunochka somehow also listened to one of the stories about a certain girl who, in the form of a white spot, appeared on the night from Thursday to Friday to different people and spoke in her ear:
– You will die tomorrow!
And people were dying. Bun was so imbued with history that on Thursdays he began to cover his left ear with a blanket, the left because he usually slept on the right. And then, fearing that the girl or he would confuse the days of the week, he began to cover his ear every day. He rightly believed that if a ghost comes, sees a closed ear, then he will have nothing to say, and he will go back.
If you tie a bandage to the bump, and then strongly
unwind and release it, then such a bump
will fly high into the sky, and behind it like a white trace 900 27 from the aircraft, will develop white matter
bandages.
When a car, a truck, of course, a car, of course, a truck, with a covered body and a wild sound, and the smell of gas, remember the smell of gas from it, a delicious smell, pleasant. When this car drives on the ground in a rainy summer, or drives on a lawn, and then the rain passes, heavy rain, then puddles then turn out in the tracks of this car, deep in places, you can’t cross this puddle in all boots, with steep banks, and depth it starts immediately in such a puddle, and not gradually, and of course you can’t drink from it, this is not a forest puddle for you, when Grandma, remember, told you if you want to drink, here you are, and a forest puddle is also someone’s imprint, only the trace is already grass sprouted, and the water stands in it clean, clean, you can see the whole bottom, and on top of the water strider. And whose trail is no longer clear, whether the cart passed last year, or a tractor with a trailer, the year before, or maybe there, which of the animals came later, this is not known for sure. But you won’t drink with such an imprint, from any animal or pet, even Grandmother will not offer such, everyone remembers the fairy tale. From the rut, but, please, drive away the water strider with your hand, and with the goby from it, and the water is tasty, infused with herbs, fragrant.
And there was also a small hole dug by shepherds, next to a pine tree that stood right in the swamp. And the water in it was dark green, well, pure “Tarhun”, only without gases, everyone passing by stopped to drink, stood like a bull in it, and let’s noisily suck up yummy. Green, with a taste of pine needles. But this is in a swamp, and in the forest, of course, the puddles have a different taste, Bun still liked him better, for his transparency and smell.
So, when you can’t drink from a puddle, and you don’t feel like drinking at all, then you can use this muddy water surface in another way. – How? – you ask, well, of course, not as stupid as any stupid unreasonable one who paces along it in children’s rubber boots, not knowing the ford, but in a smart way, that is, with ingenuity and a scenario. Or in a pioneering way, with all sorts of experiments there, as in a chemistry lesson, but we didn’t have chemistry then, maybe you didn’t have it, but Yuras and I already had it. That is, Yuras had it, and we participated. In the form of a set “Young chemist” for 25 re, not for 5 ore, like Carlson, but for twenty 5 re! You never dreamed of such a thing, just like us, by the way, but Yuras didn’t even have to dream, and he didn’t even have to go to bed for this. Come in, he says, sometime, we will set up experiments, how to get vitriol copper from an ordinary nail. We entered, received, without any knowledge of the subject, that is, there was no subject yet, but we already received it. It happened so often at school – a chapter on biology 47 for self-study, and all sorts of things, without explanations and practice. But this is after, and now the Young Chemist. The most valuable thing! A mixture of instructions and experiments. How the apartment remained intact, I still don’t understand, otherwise where Yurka would later hang around with his parents, but they don’t get used to it, they seemed to be like chemists too, or something like that. We were lucky in short, well, they were lucky at the same time, too.
So, when with ingenuity and a little knowledge mixed with experience, it is even very simple. It is enough to take a small twig, quite a small one, after all, the boat is no longer than a match (it’s better not to take matches, they have poor buoyancy), and smear one end of it with freshly released pine tree resin. The resin must be selected with skill, not very thick and not very liquid, otherwise it will not work. Then you lower the twig boat into the water, the resin reacts with the water, and the twig starts to float, leaving behind an iridescent oil trail, as if from a real ship. And if you put ants on top of it, from the nearest anthill, then it will really work out – with sailors and shipwrecks. True, unreliable sailors are ants, unreliable. They run, fuss about the deck, catch up with the wave, no, in order to calmly survive the voyage. Or maybe by nature, seasickness is inherent in them, anything can happen, so the small ones are dizzy, and sick from the prospect of the water surface.
“It’s good that they were black ants,” Bunochka’s comrades said knowingly, looking at how he, dancing, holding on to obvious places, walks around the puddle, and shook their heads for solidity, “But if only there were red , it wouldn’t be good for you at all, the red ones bite much more painfully.
Eniki-Beniki ate dumplings… Who are these “eniki-beniki”?
Or here’s another counter:
The car was driving through a dark forest
For some interest,
Inte, Inte, Interest,
Come out on the letter eS.
The letter eS did not fit
Grandma Yaga came out,
And after grandma Yaga
The little devil came out with sausage,
And the moon behind the devil,
The devil hung the sorcerer.
And the sorcerer hung, hung,
And flew into the trash.
And Boris lived in the dump,
Dead rat chair.
And his wife Larisa, a wonderful rat.
The attractiveness of this counting rhyme was that not everyone knew it to the end, and if you undertook to count, you could stop the counting rhyme at a convenient place for you, and, in fact, choose the driver, so such valuable knowledge gave certain advantages in front of the rest of the players.
There was still a classic, which everyone knew:
A month came out of the fog
He took out a knife from his pocket.
– I will cut, I will beat,
It’s all the same for you to drive.
But Bunochka hardly used it for that very reason.
River. Not a river. Not a river. River, for murmuring, or because it murmurs, a rivulet. Or so – the river murmurs, and if the Moscow analogue had a name known to everyone for its smell, then this one had a name for its depth, and was simply called Melkashka. The small river murmurs. Whether this was the official name of the river, or another nickname given to it by the children, is not known. But she was really small, and also with leeches. The latter were clearly visible on the rifts, and writhed, carried away by the current, so red (in Moscow they were black), in general, leeches like leeches. The Reds were only more afraid, they say, because the Reds. And indeed, if the black ones seemed to be calm, unhurried ribbons, then these were active, rushing along with the flow, and it seemed that they strove to bite into you on the go, but you are dexterous, you quickly remove your foot, and it flies to itself, dear, further, into the mysterious distance, and if you extend this distance, and sit on a foam plastic raft, a raft of sheets stacked on top of each other, and push off with a hockey stick, but a broken, sorry new one, and swim in the direction, then with diligence you can go into a bigger river, and then to Moscow – the river is not long, and there is the Oka, and then the Volga, and now the wave of the Caspian is beating against the shore, now the sea sand is rustling underfoot, and people in unknown colored clothes carry posters with your name. And you, tanned, satisfied, leaning on a stick, or rather on a stick with the inscription “Hockey”, greet them with your satisfied face. If you don’t turn along the way to the Volga-Don, if you don’t give your ship acceleration with oars, and pushing off harder, you won’t suddenly find the banks of the Don, and along it to Azov, oh, you still can’t get to Black, the multi-layered foam plastic of the Sea of \u200b\u200bAzov will not pull, displacement will not pull. Enough to reach the Caspian Sea.
Pioneer leaders loved to take the kids to swim in this river. Very convenient, no one will drown for a known reason, so there is no responsibility, and you can relax and sunbathe. And this procedure, that is, sunbathing, or, as Leshka Chugunkov said, sex for the poor, should be paid special attention, and Bun was paying him, though, it seems, he was the only one in the detachment. Although he didn’t know what this sex was, it seemed to him that he felt something similar at the sight of the leaders sunbathing. It is sex, that is, it is not clear what, but similar to everything that happens. The beggars, however, did not surround them with caring attention, and there were no beggars within a radius of hundreds of kilometers, and those in the cinema, probably.
And the thing is that the counselors somehow strangely wore their bathing suits, i.e. separate swimsuits, and the counselors were girls, and, probably, pretty, but Bun did not remember faces, but remembered just that they opened it to the youthful gaze, the underpants and bras of educators tucked up on all sides. Obviously, they did it for solar insolation in no other way, and the more you turn away, the more you open your magical body to the rays, and not only to the rays. And all of a sudden, an exciting hollow covered with delicate fluff will look out, or some extra volume will appear from under the colorful material, not always hanging tightly on the ropes. He was very interested in this …
He had already experienced similar excitement once, when for some reason he was led to the pool through the women’s locker room. Either they led him to sign up with a coach and there was no male guide, or there was some other reason, but they led him through the female one. Bun never liked to wear anything for his older cousin, considering it contemptuously girlish, especially her white panties, he kept dreaming of black ones, shorts, but the lot of the younger one is to wear it sometimes, but he could not stand them, because not for a second he doubted that he didn’t look like a girl and going through the women’s locker room was stupid, very stupid, but interesting, terribly interesting…. And how stupid escorts did not turn his head away from the lockers, the mirrors on the opposite wall showed a glimpse of all the most interesting things that needed to be seen.
Cuba
Also, Bunochka had a bosom friend in the camp, Leshka Chugunkov. Leshka as Leshka, Chugunkov as Chugunkov. One evening, Leshka called him to the window, and, holding out his hand somewhere in the gathering twilight, he said:
– Look, Cuba is far away . ., Cuba is far away .., Cuba is nearby …
The boy peered at the horizon for a long time in the direction hands of his friend and imagined an unknown country, a kind of Cuba, where revolutionaries are waging an unequal battle for the happiness of the working people. But why she is either nearby or far away, Bun did not understand, but these words from the then popular song, combined with the strange gesture of his best friend, were forever imprinted in his memory.
Lyoshka, like Bulochka, was an old-timer of the pioneer camp, as far as one can be an old-timer at the age of eight. And even though they started together, he looked older. Maybe Leshka had old veins, older than Buns. Or maybe from the fact that the impression was that Leshka was guarding something all the time. Either the camp, if you don’t come to it, it is already right there. I’m already waiting for you. I’m winding up the second shift, and where are you. Everyone in the city, or study. But, one way or another, the two of them started with trips to the dacha, a kind of reduced prototype of a pioneer camp, only for very small ones. The dacha was also from the factory, and was located behind the lattice metal fence of the “Rainbow”. This fence was very often crowded with small children, grimy and snotty, and watched with interest the “adult” life that lay ahead of them, dreamed of growing up and getting on the other side, some, though not quite conscious, dreamed of getting home to their parents – once such a person was brought to the ward, they put him in bed to sleep during the day, like everyone else. Quiet time and that’s it. Sleep. Yes, and sleep well during the day. Bunochka understood this later, already at an older age. In the meantime, at a quiet hour, he liked to lie by the window, he always had a bed by the window, he was an old-timer. He was the first to jump out of the bus, and into the building. While everyone is looking around in a new place, while their suitcases are sorted, and he has already taken a bed by the window. Sometimes, however, there were hunters for someone else’s good. Well, they are in vain. The hunters did not yet have experience, and there was no experience either, and old veins. By inexperience, one can say that one can forgive, of course. And they tried to explain. And sometimes with words too. At the window, it’s the same as lying to yourself, looking at the sky. And according to him, the clouds are different. They swim, change their shape, turn into either an outlandish animal, or an ordinary object, or planes – it flies to itself, and people in it, also fly somewhere. Some to their grandmother, and some may be at sea. And behind the plane, the tail stretches white. And then hangs in the sky for a long time. And you think maybe clouds are made from it. They are also white. Good at the window. So you will lie down the whole quiet hour.
And they brought a new one, he seemed to get tired and fell asleep. And then it’s time to get up, he lies to himself, only blinks his eyes, and the blanket pulls on him. He says, let’s go, you’ll miss the afternoon snack. And he, know your own, puffs his eyes and does not let go of the blanket. They took off the blanket from him, it’s not to leave him hungry, but it would be better if they didn’t take it off. The poor fellow, how he suffered, and ashamed, especially in front of the girls. He’s already big, but he couldn’t ask. It’s business, but now how, they didn’t bring him replacement things, and where did he come from. He gave his Bun, the tights were in his locker, but the shorts were found. Too big, but nothing, you can live. They didn’t miss the biscuits with jelly. But he doesn’t care, I want to go home and that’s it. Blue lips, skinny himself, a thin voice, he would have semolina porridge, and with the addition, and sit out on the country grubs, and sing a song, like they caught forty pikes. Why so much, it’s not clear, you can’t eat a lot, forty. But they caught it, they caught it. But he doesn’t care, I want to go home and that’s it. Of course, after this, when the whole ward smells of you, let them air it out, nothing, and wash it with bleach again, but he doesn’t understand.
There were such children, it happened. How not to happen, try it yourself, if from birth on music and tennis, and then suddenly once, and in Peel. And you will start calling your mother, and you will remember your grandmother, and even her middle name, Drazdrapermovna, you will immediately begin to pronounce, as soon as she comes, takes her outstretched arms, presses her flat and calms her with a quiet sway. But where is it, don’t shout, only these, in blue shorts, will surround you and shake their heads … they don’t understand … neither Bun, nor Lyoshka Chugunkov.
But Bun and Lyoshka were still friends with them, what can you do. But to explain to them that the most valuable thing, more valuable than all racing cars and tanks, fathers of policemen and mothers of chefs is the opportunity to stay in the pioneer camp for shift changes – they could not, or maybe they didn’t try very hard, he’s the only one like that , shift changes, may not be enough for everyone.
Haha, shift change!
And let the rest of the assholes laugh, let them laugh, they can’t comprehend this. …
Well, yes! I woke up in the morning, but not from the sound of a friend, I stretched under a warm blanket – I still couldn’t hear the hard efforts of the wind musician, I opened my eyes, turned my head – the ward was empty. He got up on the bed, worriedly rubbed the back of his head with his five for a bruise – where did everyone go? I thought, thought, and tiptoed out the door – maybe I overslept “Zarnitsa”! you got so wrapped up that they didn’t warn you, they didn’t find you, but they were looking to appoint you as a scout, or even better, a saboteur, you need to hurry, how will they start without you? Have you completely lost your conscience? He stuck his head in the crack, but there was no one! Then he dragged the rest of the body over his head and onto the wooden terrace, under you inaudibly sagging with the pine creak, put his bare foot, feeling the rustle of peeling oil paint through the thickness of the sole, and the head of the nail chilling your path.
– Where is everyone?
The air, unusually transparent, suddenly showed, hitherto invisible, details, carvings of the wooden club of the pediments that adorned, and swallows, which became dragonflies, black and white contrast . .. dissecting the dust over the road, still keeping, restless feet clatter and cackle tired, there are more of them the settled dust did not gild its sides.
– Where is everyone? I won’t do it again! I have been forgotten!
But the memory will return, your friend will also return, with a smile he will hand you some loaf of bread – the canteens are up, the stokers are cooking food – and where are the rest? Don’t you remember already? Yesterday on green ones, no, exactly, on yellow ones, we saw them off, and you, more than anyone else, curly-haired, for memory, wrote in dark blue, even on a red tie, that they say – I won’t forget you, and I’ll come soon, just don’t laugh, and write letters, to aunt, to Masha, with greetings from Katya, or maybe from Gali, rather, from Nadia; But exactly, did that Olya have curls? brunette with curls, and I’m blonde! don’t you remember yourself, because I’m a Georgian!
– How great, Lekha, that you are! What are we going to do with all this wealth?
Bun from the terrace looked around the entire camp equipment, stopping at objects that were more inaccessible at the usual time – a flagpole with a tied flag and a wooden tribune of the chief. And a little depressed.
I didn’t want to do anything with this wealth, especially if no one needs it now except you. This is not wealth at all. Yes, it’s just a misunderstanding. True values must be sought, eternal ones. We need to go to the river, urgently to the river. From a run, along a steep slope, on the go, everything is off – good!
Then neatly fold the clothes over your head, with your toes up, and, holding the resulting stack with your hand, go along the rocky bottom, tickling your white cassocks with a quick stream and gracefully swaying your thin, tanned backs, reach a deep place and start swimming further, paddling with only one hand, because the other one is holding clothes on his head, in Chapaev’s way…
Change of shifts!
Don’t push around like Vasily Ivanovich on the rails, there’s enough room for everyone! Everyone will get
with all the swings, carousels, little rivers and stinkers, wild boars and wild country boars, inflatable frogs and fire barrels smelling of hot red oil paint in the sun. Yes, everyone will get it, but not everyone will fall out. Like this? Happens. But Bun and Lyoshka happened, they were lucky. Leshke, however, more. His veins were still older. The lack of discipline and attention on the part of adults, well, unless the cook from the kitchen shouts to you to come in for crackers, it turned an already free life into something enchanting. And the obligatory formation in the morning? Where exactly! If you remember, it happened to me too, we stood on the ruler, and the sun charged, horror. And now we look, the pioneers began to fall, here and there. Yes, cut right on the lawn. Like being shot. He mows them down with a machine gun, and they fall and fall, you also fell then, the hands of the counselor picked you up and to the side, into the shade. There was already a paramedic in a bathrobe, they gave me something to sniff, it seemed to feel better. And you still have football today. Well, nothing, recovered, went …
Stop the dial hand! Wherever I want to go now, the compote of desires and habits will show me the cunning way. My pockets are full of biscuits, I’ll add a little water to them, from our stinky river, let’s go swimming with us! You know places where it’s not shallow, where you have to swim holding on to a branch, so as not to be swept away by a fast current, so as not to be swept away to the sea. After all, we know geography, that everything flows in and out, just don’t forget dinner, canteens, while we are here. And then again you will have to go to the field, go ashore to the collective farm, to crack sweet peas there, not Czech, not Cheshire, no! Green. So that the boars then fearlessly frighten with loud music, breaking with deadwood forest. I want it to always be like this, our day and shift changes are clear, illuminated us. And he was his! Not me, we were all like that, who saw boars, who didn’t, with their own.
We’ll get crackers, play nettle tag, and run away, pushing barefoot. Let’s turn the earth back a little and stop, stand, look and let go, let it roll, brings us the evening with mosquitoes that overshadow the stars, bats and face. Yours, mine and it’s mine.
And in the evening it’s good, stick to the cooling window sill with a soft place and, looking at the orange forest in the distance, sing a song to yourself:
Drunk, drunk hedgehog
Climbed on the wires,
Electric shock
Drunken hedgehog.
Buy duct tape for children.
You need to sing to the tune of BONEY M.
