Also known as bicarbonate of soda or sodium bicarbonate, baking soda is an alkaline chemical compound with a pH level of 9. (Baking soda is not the same as baking powder, which is a combination of baking soda, corn starch, and cream of tartare.)

Although it is mainly used for baking and cleaning, baking soda is also recommended as a natural remedy to soothe irritated skin, including vaginal and vulvar itching.  

Do Baking Soda Baths Really Help Relieve Vaginal Itching? 

Yes, when used correctly, the anti-inflammatory properties in baking soda are known to significantly relieve itching, as well as reduce swelling and redness.

As a precaution, it is important to understand that because it is alkaline, baking soda could increase the skin’s pH levels and lead to dryness or further irritation if used incorrectly.

However, when the appropriate amount is dissolved in water, the skin can absorb baking soda to soothe irritation and restore the skin’s natural pH balance. 

Do Baking Soda Baths Cure Vaginal Infections? 

It is important to understand that while baking soda can relieve vaginal itching, it will not treat underlying infections like urinary tract infections, bacterial vaginosis, or sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis – all of which require antibiotic medication as treatment.  

That said, baking soda has been proven as an effective and affordable way of treating and curing yeast infections in addition to alleviating symptoms like vaginal itching, burning during urination, and inflammation.  

Baking Soda for Yeast Infections

Recent studies have shown that when dissolved in water, baking soda is capable of killing the bacteria that cause yeast overgrowth in the vagina. This is mainly due to the environment that the alkaline solution creates, which essentially prevents any further growth of the fungus.

Furthermore, the correct amount of baking soda keeps the skin adequately dry and dehydrates harmful bacteria, thereby eliminating the moist atmosphere in which candida cells are known to thrive.

Lastly, when baking soda is dissolved in water it works to rebalance and maintain a healthy pH level in the vagina, which encourages good bacteria to grow and keeps harmful microorganisms at bay.

Can Baking Soda Baths Be Harmful? 

Although baking soda baths are inexpensive and largely effective in relieving vaginal itching for the majority of women, there are some cases where they should be avoided. Anyone experiencing the following is advised to refrain from baking soda baths or consult with their doctor beforehand: 

  • Women who are allergic to baking soda
  • Women with diabetes
  • Women with large open wounds anywhere on the body
  • Women with heart disease
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Women who are susceptible to fainting & light-headedness

Baking soda is an inexpensive household product that can significantly help to relieve vaginal itching, irritation, and swelling when dissolved in a bath of water.

Although baking soda baths have been proven to treat yeast infections without antibiotics, they can only be relied upon to ease vaginal itching associated with more serious vaginal infections like STIs, UTIs, and BV. To cure these types of infections, antibiotics are always necessary.

Every adult experiences a sore throat at least 2-3 times a year. This symptom is often more unpleasant than the others, because there are many nerve endings around the pharynx 1 . Therefore, sore throat has become the most common reason for visits to the doctor and self-medication among children and adults 2 . One of the self-help methods is rinsing with soda solution. We will figure out who can and who cannot use this method, how to properly prepare the solution, and when you should still consult a doctor.

How baking soda works on a sore throat

Rinses are classified as local treatment. This means that such treatment acts only on a specific area, without getting into the bloodstream.

Advantages of topical treatment 3 :

● action directly in the focus of inflammation;

● minimal toxic effect on the body;

● low risk of developing microbial resistance to the drug;

● uniform distribution of the active substance in the tissues of the pharynx 4 ;

● large area of ​​contact of the inflamed surface with the drug.

Gargling is considered one of the best ways to quickly remove the pathogen from the mucous membrane of the throat 5
and wash away microbial deposits 6 . At the same time, the soda solution not only washes away microbes, it reduces pain, kills bacteria and prevents the reproduction of opportunistic flora, for example, fungi of the genus Candida 7 .

For which diseases rinsing is indicated

You can gargle with soda for both bacterial and viral infections of the throat 8 .

Antiviral drug of direct action Nobasit ® Forte with the active substance enisamia iodide limits the spread of infection throughout the body by binding to the virus protein – hemagglutinin. 9 This mechanism of action prevents the penetration of the virus into cells, and reduces the level of viral replication by 100 times. 10
Due to the additional anti-inflammatory effect of 11 , enisamia iodide contributes to a pronounced reduction in sore throat and other local symptoms already from the second day of therapy 24 . Nobasit ® Forte is indicated for adults and children from 12 years old for the treatment of acute respiratory viral infections. 9 The combined mechanism of action allows it to be taken at any stage of the disease. 12

Viruses that are associated with the development of SARS:

● adenoviruses;

● coronaviruses;

● rhinoviruses;

● influenza;

● parainfluenza;

● respiratory syncytial virus;

● Epstein-Barr virus;

● cytomegalovirus;

● Coxsackie virus type A;

● rubella virus;

● Hepatitis A virus.

Sometimes a sore throat occurs as a complication of HIV infection, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. In this case, rinses are also prescribed as part of complex therapy.

Bacteria that cause sore throat:

● β-hemolytic streptococcus group A;

● Staphylococcus aureus;

● Haemophilus influenzae;

● Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Of the fungi, a sore throat can be caused by fungi of the genus Candida. These are conditionally pathogenic microorganisms that cause disease against the background of a decrease in immunity 13 .

Diseases that are accompanied by a sore throat:

● tonsillitis – tonsillitis or chronic tonsillitis;

● pharyngitis – inflammation of the pharynx;

● adenoiditis – inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils;

● epiglottitis – defeat of the epiglottis and surrounding tissues;

● infectious mononucleosis 14 .

Local treatment, including rinsing with soda, is prescribed only for mild illness. If the cause of the disease is a viral infection, antiviral drugs are prescribed. In cases where the patient’s lymph nodes are enlarged, the temperature is 38.5–39.0 °C for more than four days, and purulent plaque appears on the throat, the doctor can additionally prescribe antibiotics 15 .

How to make a soda solution

It is better to prepare the solution for 1-2 rinses – this way it will be most effective.

Recipe for a classic soda solution:

  1. If the solution is for an adult, take 200 ml of warm boiled water, for a child – 250 ml.
  2. Add a teaspoon of baking soda and stir thoroughly.

To enhance the effect of the solution, you can add iodine and salt to it, but such a solution is best used with caution. Some people may have an allergic reaction to iodine, and the accumulation of iodine in a child’s body can lead to thyroid problems.

Recipe for soda solution with iodine and salt:

  1. Take 250 ml of warm boiled water.
  2. Add a teaspoon of salt, half a teaspoon of baking soda, 1-2 drops of iodine and stir.

How to gargle properly

The procedure should last at least 30 seconds. There are three ways to gargle 16 :

  1. Inhale deeply, take the solution into your mouth, tilt your head back. Exhale slowly on the sound “aa”.
  2. Take the solution in your mouth, tilt your head back and pronounce the syllables “glu-glu”. The method helps to wash even the deep parts of the pharynx.
  3. Put the medicine in your mouth, tilt your head back and wait. Then spit out the solution and repeat the procedure. This method is used for severe sore throat, when gargling becomes too unpleasant.

Gargle at least 3 times a day. It is better to do this after a meal so that the soda stays in the throat longer. After the procedure, you can not eat or drink for 20-30 minutes 17 .

Precautions

If you have any doubts whether it is possible to gargle with soda for a particular person, it is better to check with your doctor. You definitely shouldn’t use this method on small children – they won’t be able to gargle properly 18 . If the child swallows the solution, it may cause discomfort or even vomiting 19 .

It is not recommended to gargle if it hurts a lot. During the procedure, the muscles of the neck and pharynx contract, which increases the unpleasant symptoms. In this case, it is worth doing pharyngeal baths – take the solution into your mouth, hold it for 30 seconds, and then spit it out 20 .

Do not swallow the solution. The use of soda can lead to disruption of the digestive tract, cause allergies.

When to see a doctor

Topical treatment should work in 3-5 days. A sore throat usually resolves within 7 days 21 . If the condition does not improve or complications begin, you should consult a doctor.

Reasons to visit a specialist 22 :

● ears hurt – probably otitis has begun;

● the tonsil is very swollen and closes the lumen of the throat, it is impossible to swallow – paratonsillar abscess;

● there were chest pains or interruptions in the work of the heart – infectious-allergic myocarditis;

● joint pain – rheumatism or polyarthritis;

● blood appeared in the urine – glomerulonephritis;

● stomach hurts, nausea appears, the skin itches – cholecystocholangitis.

If a person has not been vaccinated against diphtheria, it is worth paying attention to the condition of the tonsils. When a plaque appears, you should immediately consult a doctor. Already by the end of the first day of illness, films form on the throat, which interfere with breathing and can lead to suffocation 23 .

Briefly about the main

● Soda solution washes away microbes from the surface of the throat, reduces pain, kills bacteria and prevents the reproduction of opportunistic flora.

● To prepare a classic soda rinse solution for an adult, 1 teaspoon of soda is diluted in 200 ml of warm water. For baby rinses, you need to take 250 ml of water.

● Salt and iodine solution should be used with caution. To prepare it, take 250 ml of water, 1 teaspoon of salt, half a teaspoon of soda and 1-2 drops of iodine.

● You can gargle in three ways: to the sound “ah”, “glu-glu” or silently, making pharyngeal baths.

● Gargle your throat at least three times a day. It is better to carry out the procedure after eating. Usually the effect becomes noticeable on the fifth day.

● If there is no effect from local treatment, and the temperature is above 38.5 C for 4-6 days or complications appear, it is better to consult a doctor.

Scientists claim that daily intake of baking soda may help reduce alterative inflammation in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. “They have the first evidence of how this cheap lye, which can be found on the shelves of any store, causes our spleen to create an anti-inflammatory environment that can have a therapeutic effect in inflammatory diseases,” writes the Journal of Immunology.

Research shows that when healthy people consume a solution of baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, it causes their stomach to produce more acid to avoid becoming alkaline. This is also a signal to the mesothelial cells on the surface of the spleen, which makes them question the need to stimulate an immune response. The message sent by the cells goes something like this: “Most likely it’s a hamburger, not a bacterial infection,” says Dr. Paul O’Connor, a renal physiologist at Augusta University’s Department of Physiology and lead author of the study. Mesothelial cells line the body cavities, they also cover the outer surface of our organs, protecting them from rubbing against each other.

About a decade ago it became known that these same cells are responsible for another type of protection. They are equipped with small “fingers” called microvilli. With the help of these outgrowths, mesothelial cells sense the environment and warn the covered organs of invasion and the need for an immune response. Ingestion of baking soda, however, according to scientists, tells the spleen (which is part of the immune system, functions as a huge blood filter and contains white blood cells such as macrophages) not to overdo the immune response. “Definitely, bicarbonate intake affects the spleen, and we think that it is the mesothelial cells that are responsible for this,” says O’Connor.

According to the report, this communication is due to the messenger chemical acetylcholine, which protects us from inflammation. After regularly drinking water with baking soda for two weeks, a new population of macrophage immune cells was found in the spleen, as well as in the blood and kidneys. If before that there were mainly cells that increase inflammation, called M1, after two weeks of taking soda, cells that reduce it, called M2, were found. Macrophages, known for their ability to devour “junk” in the body, such as the remains of damaged or dead cells, appeared shortly after the “soda signal” of the immune response.

The reason O’Connor’s lab got involved with baking soda is because of problems like hypertension and kidney failure in laboratory animals. One of the many functions of the kidneys is the balance of such important compounds as acid, potassium, sodium. “In kidney disease, their functions are disrupted, and pH meters, ionomers will show that blood acidification has occurred,” says O’Connor. Serious complications can also be called cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

“All this, in fact, leads to the collapse of the entire system of life,” says O’Connor. Clinical trials have shown that daily intake of baking soda not only reduces acidity, but actually slows down the progression of kidney disease. Now it is a therapy that is offered to patients. So how does baking soda help? The scientists were able to figure it out. Just when its anti-inflammatory effect showed itself, the amount of M1 decreased, and M2 increased. Even in rats without any kidney damage, a similar response could be observed as in healthy students who drank a solution of baking soda.
