The Best Workout Clothes, According to Fitness Experts

Bee Trofort-Wilson; Nigil Crawford; Peloton

There are as many places to shop for workout clothes as there are workout classes. Take a search for a breathable black sports bra, for example: You can find a different version for every day of the year, and then some. With more options than any locker can fit, we’re checking the tags on fitness experts’ outfits for the very best picks.

To find the best activewear for every activity, we’re polling the leaders at the front of their studios and those on our Instagram feeds. We want to know: What workout clothes do our favorite experts wear through their sun salutations and cycling sprints? Here, nine fitness instructors and wellness practitioners from Peloton, Barry’s, Sky Ting Yoga, and more share the workout gear they wear for (almost) every class. If we can trust anyone for activewear shopping advice, it’s the people who break a sweat for a living.

Jasmine Marie, Breathwork Practitioner and Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Black Girls Breathing

“Breathwork can elicit different bodily responses, whether emotional or physical. As you use this tool to reframe your nervous system’s response to various traumas and triggers, ensuring that your body feels as comfortable as possible during a session that may elicit discomfort is extremely important.

“One of my favorite pieces for facilitating breathwork or my own breathwork (that honestly has leaked into everyday wear for me, bust-up only Zoom calls, errands out in the grocery store) is the Under Armour Infinity Bra and the Under Armour Seamless Low Long Bra. I generally do not like wearing bras but the cups are so breathable and adapt to my body in a way that it truly doesn’t feel like a bra. I’m not rushing to take it off when I get home.”

Asia Milia Ware, Founder of Curves N Cardio

“I discovered Gymshark right before the pandemic. I remember slipping on Gymshark leggings and being obsessed with the material and the fit. They had a few different collections and I started trying them all, but I noticed I kept coming back to the Vital Seamless collection.

“The way the leggings moved with my body when working out is what made me fall in love. Whether I’m running, squatting heavy, or jumping around for HIIT workouts, I know that I don’t have to worry about my pants falling or being see-through. It’s also designed with a sweat-wick material, which is a lifesaver for a heavy sweater like me. The Vital Seamless bra is also a special piece, because it is a challenge to find double-D-friendly sports bras. While the bra is a medium-support one, I find myself doubling up on it and I’m fine throughout my workouts. Because the material is so lightweight, I never have to worry about feeling like I am suffocating under two sports bras.

“I have the Vital Seamless sets in almost every color, and my favorite way to wear them is pairing complementing colors. It’s also my airport uniform, because I feel so confident in it and it’s so flattering on my body.”

Jessamyn Stanley, Founder of The Underbelly Yoga

“I love all bralettes, low-impact sports bras, and very high-cut underwear, like the Calvin Klein boy short briefs and my UB sports bra. I love practicing in my underwear, and I love how this underwear fits me and that it lets me move when I’m practicing. High-cut undies stay right at my waist while I’m practicing, and they don’t have a lot of fabric in the thigh or crotch, so it gives my leg maximum rotation. I like to throw on my UB cropped hoodie over this set. It’s absolutely my favorite Netflix-and-chill outfit—I prefer to be kickin’ it around the house in my most comfortable clothes.”

Modern Structure Plus Bikini

Tunde Oyeneyin, Peloton Instructor

“When choosing the perfect sports bra, I look for not only the perfect amount of coverage but also colors and cuts that really pop. This Peloton bra is so soft. An uncomfortable bra can quickly kill a good workout, and that’s why I think it’s important to go for quality. The Nike mid-rise shorts are also my current go-to. The classic fit has never failed me on or off the bike. I wear them during workouts or leisurely with a cutoff top and a jean jacket around the waist.”

Krissy Jones, Cofounder of Sky Ting Yoga

“I definitely have a uniform at Sky Ting. In the summer, I usually wear an Eres one-piece bathing suit with Tory Sport bike shorts. I don’t like wearing sports bras to class or tops that fly over my head in down dog, and I like looking put together, so I found the Eres bathing suit to be the perfect piece. Post-class, I take off the shorts and throw on a skirt, and I’m ready for dinner! The Tory Sport shorts are high waisted and the perfect length. You’ll see me biking downtown to class sometimes in those shorts with a men’s button down shirt on top.”

High-Rise Weightless Bike Shorts

Tiana Okoye, Barry’s Instructor

“My favorite set to wear is Lululemon’s Wunder Under tight, Energy Bra, and matching oversized crew sweatshirt. I am obsessed with this set, because it’s versatile and functional. The leggings are fast-drying when things get heated in the Red Room, and high waisted to give that extra support for all those burpees! The ladies are getting love, too, with the Energy Bra, providing enough support for a treadmill round, while not becoming too restricting if I’m wearing it all day while writing programs for our digital platform, Barry’s X.

“This set is my favorite, because not only do I feel comfortable during my workouts in the Red Room, but the oversized crew sweatshirt immediately elevates the outfit from sweaty to swaggy (especially if you add my favorite jewelry brand, Automic Gold, on top). I frequent this fit at LAX and to and from our Barry’s X set. It’s just too good.”

Energy Bra High-Neck Longline

Wunder Train High-Rise Tight

Karla Garcia, Dance Teacher and Choreographer

“I love this Good American top, because it’s fun and intricate, but super flattering. These Alo high-waisted shorts are wonderfully comfortable as well! The Good American top was a gift from my mom, and I found the shorts at the Alo store at the Grove in L.A.

“I like when an outfit feels light, like a part of your body. I teach advanced jazz at different locations in New York City, including Broadway Dance Center and Steps Dance Conservatory. As a choreographer and teacher, I’m on the go a lot, so I need the pieces to feel like I can workout at the gym, teach a class, have a Zoom meeting, and then run a rehearsal all in one outfit.”

Tia Spowart, The Class Instructor

“My favorite set to wear when teaching The Class is the Like a Cloud Bra and Align Short from Lululemon. I was looking for simple pieces that I could mix and match, and then settled on the Cassis set because I loved it so much.

“I love how the Like a Cloud bra is contoured. It is supportive and feminine without needing those annoying bra-cup inserts that most of us discard anyways! The bra stays put all practice, and I never have to worry about adjusting the straps or pulling it down. The material is so incredibly silky and wicks away the sweat instantly, so I never feel the dampness on my skin.

“I also love the Align Shorts as they are high-waisted and buttery soft. Because The Class is so emotive and energetically driven, I like my clothing to feel like a second skin. I don’t want my thoughts to be consumed with what I am wearing so that I can focus on my breath and body.”

Sarah Khan, SoulCycle Instructor

“Anyone who knows me or comes to a class knows how much I love a matching set. I’ve tried so many, but I’d have to say my favorites are the Soul by SoulCycle sets. I discovered them through trial and error, and fell in love once I started using workout clothes every day … multiple times a day. I love the ribbed sets and the high-rise milestone legging-and-bra combos. Not only are they so comfortable and form fitting, but they allow me to move freely on a bike or even during a good yoga session: no peeling, ripping, or even the slightest scratches. The material is functional, breathable, and paired with chunky sneakers and a zip-up—street style chic! Coming from someone who is rarely not in workout clothes, these are a must.”

  • Wearing the right workout clothing helps keep you cool, comfortable, and prevents chafing.
  • The best apparel should use performance materials, feature a smart design, and have a versatile style.
  • We recommend Nike‘s activewear for women overall, as it’s the best blend of price, performance, and variety.

LoadingSomething is loading.

Even though all of us own workout clothes, it’s rare to come across a top or shorts that you truly love. But comfortable, well-fitting women’s workout clothes can make or break your motivation to go for a run, hit the gym, even just take your dog for a walk. And if that workout clothing is flattering and makes you feel good, well, that’s just the holy grail.

Well-designed workout clothes for women should be made of technical fabrics that wick sweat away, dry quickly, and potentially provide a slight compression to help your body feel supported. It should also be well-designed so that nothing rides up or falls down, and it doesn’t make you chafe.

As a fitness editor for nearly a decade and a woman, I’ve not only tried a lot of women’s activewear brands but I also know the struggle of finding workout clothes that actually fit your body correctly. Whether you’re looking for cheap workout clothes to just get you to the gym, athletic wear that looks flattering in photos, or simply the best place to buy a new pair of shorts for the summer, I’ve got you covered.

Below, I’ve ranked the best workout brands to shop based on my personal testing, as well as input from the countless women I quiz about the athletic wear they’re wearing. The brands featured here all hit the sweet spot of price for the quality and offer inclusive sizing and fits.

The best places to shop for women’s workout clothes:

What to Wear When Working Out

You’ve finally found the motivation to kick-start your new workout routine and signed up to the 8fit app or decided to hit the gym to try a new class or two — but then creeps the inevitable and mind-boggling question as you pack your gym bag — what to wear?!

Rest assured, you’re not the first and most certainly not the last to scratch their head in activewear despair. Workout apparel has come a long way from the humble sweatpants or revealing 70’s marathon shorts — today it’s a multibillion-dollar industry with an overwhelming amount of brands and apparel options that it can be confusing to know what we do and don’t need really. Before you go maxing your credit card out, we’ve got some useful guidelines that will help you make an informed decision when choosing the best workout clothing for you.

Comfort is key

It might be nice to rock the latest Lululemon line but no matter how stylish it may be or how good you might look in it, if you’re uncomfortable and pulling and adjusting here and there while exercising, it will compromise the quality of your workout, adding a motivational hurdle to your routine. It’s important to feel comfortable so you can move with ease.

Best workout clothing essentials

We know it’s hard, but try not to be lured by the latest activewear marketing campaign trending online or fitness influencers promoting their newest workout gear. When in doubt, keep it simple. Inexpensive workout clothing that you can move freely in will do the trick.

Here are a couple of pointers to look out for when selecting yoga, running, or gym workout clothes:

1. Shoes

The right pair of sneakers is imperative for most workouts. You want to look for shoes that fit well, support your feet, and reduce impact mainly when you run and jump. If however, if you’re doing yoga or pilates, we advise you go barefoot as wearing shoes will limit your mobility and constrict your ankles and calves (Note: If it’s cold then throw on a pair of grippy socks.)

Trainer’s tip:

If you don’t have any existing injuries, try squatting barefoot. The added ankle and calf range of movement will help you maintain better posture and sit even deeper.

2. Sports bras

Finding a well-fitted regular bra is hard enough, let alone trying to find one that will keep the gals supported and safe while working out. When shopping for a sports bra make sure you choose one designed for high impact sport, this is doubly important for women with bigger busts. Training without a sports bra can be quite uncomfortable, especially when doing exercises that involve running or jumping.

3. Leggings, sweatpants or shorts?

The best workout clothing, in this case, is dependent on mood and weather. The priority is that you can move without restriction and feel good while you’re at it. One thing to be aware of is the type of material you choose, especially if you expect to sweat loads. But more on that later.

4. Tank top or t-shirt?

Both are fine, and just like the bottoms you choose to work out in, the best workout clothes for women or men is all about preference, weather, and comfort. We’re all guilty of grabbing that old oversized, grey t-shirt we got for free that one time to work out in, but sometimes choosing an exercise top designed for sport will let your skin breathe a bit more. Plus, working out in clothes that make you feel great, will also boost your self-esteem while exercising — looking good, feeling great. If you don’t have a sports top, then any standard t-shirt or vest is fine.

Trainer’s tip:

Layering always comes in handy, especially if you work out outdoors. This way you can take off what you need to when you need to and pop them back on after you’ve cooled down.

Keep in mind…

  • If you’re dripping in jewelry (or even if it’s just a necklace and some ear studs), make sure to take off your gems before working out, as they can get caught in equipment and cause injury.

  • If you have long hair, it’s advisable to tie it up in a bun or ponytail, so it doesn’t get in the way or get caught in any gym equipment. Keeping your hair off your neck will also help you stay cool.

  • Although light and affordable, cotton-based workout clothing will hold and absorb sweat and moisture, making your clothes feel like they weigh you down by the end of a sweat-drenched workout. If you have a little more wiggle room in your monthly budget, then why not invest in workout apparel made with moisture wicking material. These synthetic fibers ensure that the sweat and moisture are drawn to the outside of the garment, leaving you feeling more comfortable and dry — well, dryer — in most cases. 😉

Trainer’s tip:

If you want to invest in good quality apparel without blowing your budget, then you can find inexpensive workout clothes by most well-known sporting brands on sale or at outlet malls.

Now that we’ve covered the basics when it comes to what to wear when working out, why not throw on some of your best workout clothing, lace up your sneakers, sign up to 8fit (if you haven’t already), and get a HIIT workout done today! Remember you are only one workout away from reaching your goals and feeling great.

Best gym clothes for men 2021: Gymshark to Asos

Athleisure has well and truly been adopted by the mainstream, with Nike and Adidas topping the biggest grossing names in the clothes business. As more and more of us take to regular fitness routines, we’re spending more time in sweat-wicking shorts than suits, so why wouldn’t you treat these clothes like the rest of your wardrobe and express your stylistic idiosyncrasies?

At the very least, replace the worn, mud-stained sports top you used through school with some purpose-built, lean gym attire. There’s no better time to be dressing shipshape when you exercise, so here’s everything you should know before upgrading your fit kit, plus the GQ edit of the best gym clothes for men you can buy right now. And if you’re looking for something to stow your new purchases, or some functional training shoes to go with, check out our picks of the best gym bags and workout trainers.

1. The top

Sweat-wicking is the name of the game when it comes to gym tops. If you’re working out at max effort – be that at the gym or at home with a resistance band, kettlebell and dumbbells set-up – you’ll want a top that can quickly mop up any moisture perspiring from your back and underarms, and dry just as fast.

Different sports brands have trademarked their own technologies to do this. The most renowned is Nike’s Dri-Fit, a polyester fabric with high-performance microfibre construction to support the body’s natural cooling system by taking sweat and dispersing it evenly throughout the surface of the garment to speed up evaporation. Lululemon’s Metal Vent tech, meanwhile, boasts smart sweat- and odour-resistant features knitted into the fabric where it’s needed most thanks to is tops’ seamless design.

2. The bottoms

What’s the difference between running shorts and training shorts? Typically, the training kind will be a little longer, falling just above the knee, constructed so as to inhibit the movement of your leg during a given exercise. They’ll also tend to be a little more convenient for the gym as they’ll feature pockets, something running shorts often come without. That said, if you can find a good running short that works for the gym, then winner, winner, chicken broccoli and sweet potato dinner. Running shorts are primed for freedom of movement, so are an optimal choice for cardio-focused workouts.

3. The base layers

Let’s get one thing straight: no matter how good you think your derrière looks in them, men’s tights should only be worn underneath a pair of shorts. There’s not a single person in the gym who wants to see the outline of your member as you perform a hip thrust. That established, it’s well worth incorporating base layers into your gym kit for a few reasons.

For one, base layers keep you warm when you train outdoors while also absorbing sweat for enhanced comfort. From a performance perspective, they also provide support thanks to their snug fit, thereby reducing risk of injury, while some fitness experts swear by base layers for better activation of the muscles. They look good too, exaggerating the silhouette of your harder-worked muscles, especially the calves and shoulders.

42 Best Gym Clothes & Fitness Apparel Brands [2021 Edition]

Hitting the gym these days can almost be considered a religion. Just about every man and his dog head to their chosen place of iron-clad worship to lift an array of heavy objects in the name of aesthetics. And probably health and strength too. But admit it…it’s mainly aesthetics.

Which brings us nicely to this carefully curated list of the world’s coolest gym clothing brands. Because, not only do you want to look a million dollars when in the gym, but you need your clothing to help you perform at your very best, whether it be in terms of durability for the sheer number of squats you perform, or breathability to keep you cool during intense HIIT workouts.

Unlike many other sports, gym workouts cannot be enhanced by some special ultra-tight pants or grippy socks. Instead, the focus is on technical fabrics, moisture-wicking, breathability and weight which allows individuals to push themselves to the limits. Think clothing that complements your best workouts rather than restricting them!

Given the practical nature of gym wear over other forms of menswear, there are not too many rules to abide by. The most important factors are fit, colour and style that need to be addressed.

When training in the gym, whether it be weights, cardio, yoga or heavy HIIT classes, it’s important to ensure that your outfit fits perfectly. And by perfect we mean clothes that give your arms, legs, waist and mid-section a full range of motion to take on any exercise.

That’s not to say you need to be rocking the loosest fitting t-shirt or shorts in your wardrobe. Many brands, especially the ones we’ve listed here, now come in a slimmer cut to provide a cleaner aesthetic without sacrificing performance. Elastane and polyester blends help a lot with this so keep an eye on these types of garments which often come in joggers, shirts and compression gear.

This is where the style aspect comes into play a bit more for gym-goers. When pairing men’s gym clothes it’s important to pay attention to the colour combination of your top and bottom. What you never want to have is a full matching outfit that will make you look like a member of The Wiggles. Instead, break up the colours with a bright top and muted bottoms or vice versa.

If you’re big on the cardio and HIIT then the style of gym clothing men should be going for is the fast wicking stuff. Think thin layers and lots of air pockets for air and moisture to escape. If you’re a lifter then singlets and anything that can highlight your muscle groups is the look you want. Training in the cold? Arm yourself with jogger pants and a hoodie until you’ve warmed up. It’s as simple as that.

Ready to look damn good as you lift your personal best? These are the best gym clothes for men to rock right now.

Calling all gym junkies and bodybuilders: Ryderwear is a good looking, no thrills brand that will never let you down. From the gym to the cafe this brand is unpretentious, stylish and a quality option for those that lift.

Reigning Champ

Canadian brand Reigning Champ certainly sits towards the more luxurious end of men’s gym clothing. All pieces are designed and made at the Canadian factory, and the brand even goes so far as to develop its own products. The results are insanely high-quality materials, impeccable fits and timeless designs that sure as hell stand out from the crowd.

Much of Reigning Champ’s clothing is targeted at the athletic industry, but because of their more common ‘non-active’ look, can easily be worn as everyday pieces.

Boohoo Man

British Instagram favourite boohooMan combines on-trend styles with affordable price points to deliver a huge range of clothing to cover every aspect of a man’s wardrobe. The brand’s activewear range is equally vast and comprises hoodies, t-shirts, shorts, vests, compression wear and much, much more.

American sportswear label Leorêver positions itself at the more premium end of activewear. All pieces are designed and made at the company’s showroom in Huntingdon Beach, California, and all are designed to be used not only for exercising but for travel, business meetings and plenty of others besides.

The brand uses innovative fabrics such as Micro Modal, made from the cellulose of Beech trees, which allows clothing to be breathable, comfortable and durable. You may need to pay a little bit extra for the Leorêver name, but they will be completely versatile and last you a lifetime.

Rhone

Rhone is committed to those who are committed to bettering themselves. The premium brand makes clothing that prioritises fit, form and function, and pieces that allow the wearer to perform at their very best.

Similarly, their simplistic designs not only lend themselves to use in the gym, but if you fancy, you can use them as everyday pieces too, dressing them up under a suit jacket, or down at the weekend with a pair of jeans or chinos.

Ten Thousand

American sportswear manufacturer Ten Thousand produces its complete range of tops, shorts and accessories on the basis of extensive research and development. The result is a comprehensive range of minimalist, yet stylish gym wear that offers great fits and features, with many pieces developed for specific purposes. Myprotein

British sports nutrition and clothing brand Myprotein was founded in 2004 and has since become a global brand, delivering protein powders, supplements and other accessories to fitness fanatics the world over.

The company also has an extensive range of clothing, comprising tops, shorts, sweat pants, hoodies, jackets and more, with both workout days and rest days catered for. Prices are affordable and quality is up there with the very best.

On Running

Swiss brand On Running initially set out to transform the way we run forever when it was founded in 2010, with some innovative shoes that make it feel as though you’re quite literally running on clouds. Since then, On has been embraced by millions of runners worldwide, all of whom now remain loyal to the brand for the higher levels of performance the company’s shoes allow them achieve.

It’s not all about shoes though, as On Running also has a comprehensive selection of gym clothing, which likes the shoes, is designed to get the very best out of you. Much of the clothing is remarkably lightweight and highly breathable, so you’ll feel like you’re wearing nothing at all (cue Ned Flanders thoughts).

Lululemon

Originally designed for Yoga, Lululemon are a perfect option for gym wear as they are highly flexible, allowing movement in any direction. Unlike most gym clothing they look great, even when they’re drenched in sweat. Lululemon also has a selection of more casual clothing that will help you look stylish when transiting to and from the gym.

Barbell Apparel

Named after the piece of gym equipment favoured by most gym bros, Barbell was founded on the belief that “clothing should be better.” But, rather than just produce clothing intended for the gym, Barbell also has pieces that complement your gains out of it. Thinks jeans, chinos and even dress shirts in athletic fits (the result of years of research) that provide comfort and stretch where you need it.

Gym wear is still on the menu, however, with shorts, t-shirts and singlets all being available in breathable fabrics.

Quince

You may not have heard of Quince before, and that’s because it was only founded a few years ago. But it’s definitely a brand you should include on your radar as it produces some exceptionally fine clothing for prices you probably won’t believe.

Understanding that activewear is all the rage right now, Quince has got in on the action to offer guys a collection of performance tops, bottoms and sweaters that are made from sustainable and recycled materials, are lightweight, will dry quickly and effectively move moisture and sweat away from your body. And once you see the price, you’ll be stocking up in no time.

Outdoor Voices

You won’t find outlandish branding or patterns in the Outdoor Voices collections. Instead, the American company offers more traditionally-styled gym clothing with universally flattering fits. Outdoor Voices develops some of its own fabrics, such as Sweatee, a performance cotton that takes sweat from your body and moves it to the fabric’s surface where it quickly dries.

This lends Outdoor Voices clothing to being worn away from the gym too, and if you’re somehow stuck for inspiration of what top and bottom to pair, OV Kits is on hand to help out, and can even save you some money in the process.

Vuori

Californian brand Vuori takes gym clothing and gives it a decidedly laid-back, hippie vibe. Definitely a brand for anyone who practices yoga, Vuori can also easily be used in the gym when you really want to get your sweat on. Clothing is made from sustainably sourced materials and produced in ethical means, and designs are simple enough that they can be worn even on your off-days.

BOXRAW

BOXRAW was founded a few short years ago in 2017. Whilst they might not have been around for as long as some of the other brands we’ve featured, their unique ethos and boxing specific gear make them stand out from the crowd. They were built on the belief that boxing isn’t merely a sport or practice, instead, they see it as a lifestyle.

Their ultimate aim is to be the reason why someone gets into boxing, by providing them with the equipment and clothing that need to thrive. Whether you spend your time in the ring or simply just jogging and shadow boxing in the bathroom, BOXRAW’s gear will help you get the edge you need.

Represent

Represent has never introduced change for its own sake. It has chosen instead, to refine constantly the design of garments. Each development is analysed carefully to ensure that it not only meet’s the brother’s meticulous standards but adds to the luxurious pleasure to be discovered when handling the garment. Their men’s activewear range is diverse and offers something for every guy. We especially like their Zip Pant, inspired by cargo pants so you can wear them casually, but made with 4 way stretch nylon to give you a full range of movement while working out.

Fourlaps

Unashamedly premium in its approach to activewear, Fourlaps takes traditional pieces and gives them an upgrade using advanced fabrics that help to regulate your body temperature, top-quality craftsmanship that will last for years and minimalist designs that look just as good away from the gym as they do in it, this American brand could well be your new favourite.

Alo Yoga

It may have yoga in its brand name, and that is certainly the discipline best suited to the clothing on offer, but because of that, Alo Yoga’s collections are made from performance fabrics and offer plenty of stretch. This means they’re perfectly suited to the gym floor, allowing you to squat, lift, run and row to your heart’s content. The brand’s clothing looks great too, serving up minimalist design, and all pieces can be had in a multitude of colours.

Elite Eleven

Melbourne-based Elite Eleven targets itself at the real muscleheads in the gym, however, the brand’s clothing is designed to be just as suitable for lifestyle applications as they are in the gym. Expect singlets and t-shirts in tight fits – although still with enough stretch to allow for free movement – alongside shorts and joggers that you’ll happily be seen wearing around town.

Olivers Apparel

Olivers Apparel makes subtle, premium workout clothing for men, along with a collection of everyday wear (although the two can almost be worn for either situation). With a focus on taking the menswear essentials and using higher quality materials to produce them – including those that offer enough stretch for full movement when curling some iron – Olivers Apparel is a brand for active guys who take their style seriously, whether it be pounding the pavement running or benching 140 at the gym.

Under Armour

Under Armour was one of the first companies to introduce moisture-wicking fabrics to the world, beating out the likes of Nike, Reebok and Adidas. The American sportswear giant, founded in 1996, saw immediate success for its designs and today is the official sponsor of several major sports teams around the world.

Being a more traditional activewear brand, Under Armour’s clothing is constantly evolving, with new fabric technologies being introduced to help you perform at your very best, from tops and shorts to shoes, Under Armour has something for all gym users.

Hylete

What started with one training short in 2012 has grown into an extensive line of men’s and women’s fitness apparel, backpacks, and the first HYLETE cross-training shoe introduced in 2018.

Iffley Road

Named after the running track where British runner Roger Bannister completed a sub-4-minute mile, Iffley Road offers men a premium collection of athletic gear that can be worn not just for running, but for gym workouts too.

Being British, Iffley Road also knows all about inclement weather, so you’ll find numerous pieces that help regulate body temperature and keep you dry when running outside.

Reebok

Founded in Bolton, England but now under the ownership of Adidas and operating as an American company, Reebok has become one of the biggest names in sports. The company is the main sponsor of the UFC and CrossFit, and has several sponsorship deals with sports teams and athletes around the world.

Reebok continues to innovate today, and puts a strong focus on making sure every single piece of clothing or pair of shoes it makes lives up to its heritage and reputation for quality. Forget the draw of some of the bigger sports brands out there, Reebok is one that is hard to beat.

Ministry of Supply

Born in the labs of MIT, Ministry of Supply is your no fuss everyday activewear brand. Their garments are all tested to maximise durability. Their range is simple but it will get you through you toughest workouts and longest runs.

90,000 requirements for fitness and bodybuilding clothing, sports models for men

The efficiency and safety of training in the gym largely depend on the quality of men’s sports equipment. So that uncomfortable sensations cannot distract the athlete’s attention from exercising on simulators, it is worthwhile to pay special attention to the choice of suitable clothing. What are the requirements for gym clothing? What kind of equipment is suitable for fitness and bodybuilding? How to choose a quality workout uniform?

Features

Men’s clothing designed for sports has a number of features that distinguish it from everyday wardrobe items. One of them is a specific cut with a minimum number of seams and inserts. Depending on the nature and intensity of training, sportswear can be loose or tight-fitting. Loose clothing that does not restrict movement is typically used for stadium running, soccer and volleyball training.

Tight clothing made of elastic material is most often used for fitness, strength sports.

The uniform designed for training in the gym, unlike ordinary clothes, is made of special fabrics that are easy to stretch and resistant to tears. Clothes made of such materials do not wrinkle, do not absorb moisture and odors, do not restrict movement. Tightly fitting to the body, the elastic sports equipment provides muscle support during intense physical activity. In addition, due to the compression created by the dense material, the maximum effect of training is achieved (trying to overcome the resistance of the elastic tissue, the athlete makes more efforts).

Another feature of men’s fitness wear is ergonomics. The well-being, level of activity, physical and psychological comfort of an athlete during training largely depend on this important parameter.

Requirements

Fitness instructors and sports physicians are unanimous in the belief that workout clothing should be ergonomic. These include:

  • anthropometric;
  • hygienic;
  • psychophysical (psychophysiological).

Compliance of sportswear with anthropometric requirements means that it is optimal for a man in size, taking into account his physical data (height, build). Training clothing should not cause discomfort during exercise.

Sportswear must also meet a number of hygiene requirements. So, the material of the training suit should help to remove moisture and excess heat from the body during intensive training. The fabric should not absorb sweat and dirt, which provides a breeding ground for bacteria. In addition, the material of a tracksuit must be hypoallergenic and pleasant to the touch.

Compliance of men’s sportswear with psychophysical requirements implies its aesthetics, attractive appearance, good fit. In other words, a tracksuit should not make a man feel awkward, insecure or embarrassed.

Varieties

There is an impressive assortment of versatile training kits in modern men’s sportswear stores. If necessary, the athlete can independently select the upper and lower parts of the equipment, which will fully correspond to his individual parameters.

  • Shorts are the most popular element of men’s sports equipment. For fitness activities, shorts with a length slightly above the knee, with a straight or slightly tight cut, are optimal. For strength training (bodybuilding), modern manufacturers offer elastic shorts with a compression effect that provide muscle support during exercise.
  • Tights – a kind of tight-fitting training pants. Modern men’s tights are made from breathable, elastic fabrics that create a compression effect and provide muscle support during intense physical activity.
  • Sweatpants are popular with men in the same way as sports shorts. Trousers are often complemented by T-shirts, polo shirts, and loose wrestling shirts.Such equipment is ideal for running and exercising on simulators.
  • Wrestling leotard is a very popular type of clothing among athletes involved in powerlifting, bodybuilding, wrestling, weightlifting. Leotard of this type is an elastic one-piece suit with a pair of tight shoulder straps at the top.

Tightly fitting the athlete’s torso, this leotard provides muscle support during intense loads, lifting weights.

  • Ideal for fitness and bodybuilding activities Classic sports jerseys . They are usually straight or close-fitting for a comfortable fit. The absence of sleeves in such products greatly simplifies workouts that involve physical activity on the shoulder girdle or joints.
  • T-shirts are another type of sportswear that is often used in conjunction with equipment for athletics. For training in the gym, they usually use loose models of T-shirts with wide sleeves that do not restrict movement.

Materials

Men’s uniform, designed for fitness and intense strength training, is most often made from a blended material consisting of natural and synthetic fibers .

  • Cotton – natural fabric with excellent hygroscopicity, breathability, softness, hypoallergenicity. The disadvantages of this material include weak wear resistance, crumpling, a tendency to burnout and deformation.

  • Polyester is a synthetic material characterized by high strength, durability and wear resistance.Polyester clothing does not wrinkle and can be easily cleaned from dirt. At the same time, such tissue is capable of accumulating static electricity in itself, as well as causing allergic skin reactions.
  • Footer LUX is a durable, wear-resistant blended fabric used to make sportswear for women and men. The content of cotton fibers in it provides good breathability of the fabric, and the presence of elastane threads determines its extensibility.

This material does not wrinkle, does not become lumpy, does not deform and does not fade even after repeated washings.

  • Biflex (supplex) – a kind of elastic and durable fabric, consisting of nylon with a small addition of spandex. The material is distinguished by impressive elasticity (it stretches equally well in all directions), strength, smoothness, resistance to shrinkage and discoloration. After washing, supplex products dry very quickly.

Manufacturers

  • Nike is a well-known American company specializing in the production of high quality sports equipment and footwear. The brand’s product range includes premium men’s suits, sweatpants, T-shirts and tank tops for all sports.
  • Adidas is the largest German manufacturer of sportswear, footwear and accessories of impeccable European quality. In the production of clothing for sports, this brand uses unique technologies, one of which is Climalite. This technology makes it possible to produce comfortable sportswear from a “breathable” material that wicks moisture away from the body during intense training.
  • Puma is one of the oldest German companies specializing in the production of clothing, footwear and accessories for sports. The range of the brand’s products includes a wide selection of models of sportswear for men, as well as underwear designed specifically for intense workouts.
  • Asics is a well-known Japanese manufacturer of sportswear, footwear and accessories. For men, this brand offers a number of unique collections of clothing designed specifically for fitness, athletics, volleyball, tennis, and jogging. The sportswear models offered by the manufacturer are made from natural fabrics with a slight addition of synthetic fibers.

How to choose?

When choosing the right clothing for a fitness club, you should take into account the specifics, intensity and frequency of the upcoming activities. For trainings involving increased physical activity, it is recommended to purchase equipment characterized by the following features:

  • elasticity and breathability of the material;
  • product strength, durability, resistance to dirt, fading and shrinkage;
  • comfortable and ergonomic fit.

For owners of sensitive skin prone to allergies and irritation, experts recommend purchasing sports equipment made of cotton. Such products, unlike synthetic clothing, will not cause an allergic skin reaction and will provide maximum comfort during training.

When choosing sports equipment made of synthetic fabrics, you should make sure that the item you like does not accumulate static electricity. To do this, it is enough to spread it out on a flat surface and iron it with an effort from the outside with a dry palm.

If the material sticks to your hands, sparks, produces crackles and clicks, then it is undesirable to purchase such a thing.

When purchasing sports equipment in a store, you should not avoid the opportunity to try on clothes before buying. During fitting, you should evaluate not only the appearance and fit of the products, but also your own feelings. Clothing (even with a compression effect) should not squeeze the body too much, hindering movement and causing discomfort. To assess the degree of elasticity of the equipment, during the fitting, it is worth performing several simple movements: raise your arms, sit down, bend forward and to the sides.

Sportswear should not be purchased in the wrong size. Some novice athletes often make a common mistake by specifically buying smaller equipment (in case they lose weight). Fitness trainers argue that the harm from this “motivation” is much more than good. Training in tight clothing is not only ineffective but also unsafe.Strongly squeezing the body, tight equipment can cause circulatory disorders, deterioration of health, dizziness and even fainting.

90,000 What fabric is your fitness clothing made of?

In order for your fitness classes to be as productive and comfortable as possible, you need to acquire high-quality sportswear. Before you start choosing things for fitness, you need to figure out what kind of fabrics they make sportswear.Next, we will take a closer look at what fabrics are made of clothing for sports training.

Breathes – does not breathe. We are discussing the myths about the “breathing” of clothes for training in the hall

Clothes for sports are sewn from natural, synthetic and mixed fabrics. The most practical and suitable for physical activity is synthetic fitness clothing. Synthetic fibers make sportswear comfortable, elastic and breathable. However, many modern sportswear brands make clothes not only from synthetic fabrics, but also use natural fabrics.

Basic materials in fabrics from which fitness clothes are sewn

First, let’s pay attention to natural cotton, which acts as an antipode to existing synthetic fabrics. Most people who are professionally involved in sports do not advise wearing natural cotton clothes for training. Such a material excessively absorbs the sweat that has come out and subsequently the clothes begin to stick to the body, causing discomfort. In addition, prolonged exposure to wet things will lead to colds.

Cotton sportswear can be worn for less intense workouts. In addition, it is very problematic to give up cotton things for people who suffer from allergic diseases, asthma, skin diseases – eczema or psoriasis. When choosing clothes made of 100% natural fabric, it is worth remembering certain properties of matter:

  • items shrink when washed;

  • things take a long time to dry;

  • Clothes are wrinkled a lot.

Specialized synthetic fibers

  1. Polyamide. At the moment, things created with the use of polyamide are quite popular. Polyamide fibers are capable of keeping the product’s appearance flawless for a long time. The main advantages include impeccable breathability, strength, lightness and softness. In addition, when wet, the fabric dries quickly.

  2. Elastane. Elastane fibers make the product more elastic and wear resistant.Clothing with elastane threads fits snugly to the body, but does not squeeze or restrict movement. Sportswear made of materials based on elastane stretch perfectly and retain its original shape for a long time. Such material is not afraid of UV rays, salt and chlorinated water, as well as numerous washings. The material does not fade and is endowed with breathability.

  3. Polyester. Mesh inserts are made of this material, through which air passes, which allows the body to breathe.Dense polyester fibers are added to the material from which leggings, leggings and tights are sewn. Soft threads are present in the fabrics from which tops, bras and T-shirts are sewn. This material has its advantages – it is easy to clean, dries quickly, does not wrinkle, does not fade, and retains its original shape for a long time.

  4. Lycra. The addition of lycra fibers to the composition of the fabric allows to increase the service life of the clothes, since things do not stretch and retain their shape for a long time. In addition, Lycra threads make the product elastic and stretchable.Working out in clothes made of material with the addition of lycra is very comfortable and convenient, because such things do not hinder movement.

  5. Nylon. These fibers were developed with the aim of fully replacing traditional silk. Such threads have a lot of advantages – they are smooth, wear-resistant, do not wrinkle, dry quickly, elastic, easy to wash and keep the shape of the product for a long time. Nylon-infused clothing is built to withstand the most demanding workouts.

So from what fabrics are fitness clothes ?!

So, we have dealt with the main existing synthetic fibers.Further, a completely logical question is brewing – why are fitness clothing made of synthetic fabrics in great advantage? Therefore, further it is necessary to understand the interaction of synthetic threads and what fabrics are obtained by combining them.

Types of fabrics in clothes for training in the hall and their composition

  • Footer LUX. Such a fabric is created using a special technology – weaving of fibers and a strong base allows you to avoid the appearance of pellets. In addition, the material is resistant to active use and does not shrink during washing. The presence of elastane fibers in the fabric makes it elastic, and cotton provides excellent breathability.

  • Stretch cooler. The material contains lycra threads, which ensures the presence of excellent qualities – the fabric is elastic, resistant to wear, retains its shape for a long time, does not shrink after washing, does not cause allergic reactions, does not fade or fade.

  • Supplex. This material is elastic, excellently wicks moisture to the surface of the product. Thanks to these properties, the fabric is ideal for creating sportswear. The material is thin and light, but this fact did not affect the strength and durability of the fabric. Supplex also has other advantages – it can dry quickly, does not wrinkle and does not shine through.

  • Stretch cotton. The emergence of such a material was due to the combination of natural cotton with elastane fibers. Thanks to this combination, the fabric received a lot of advantages – elasticity, strength, breathability, durability, ease of care, crease resistance and softness.

That’s probably all we wanted to tell you about the main fabrics and materials from which modern sportswear is created. Finally, we want to say that choosing sportswear for fitness should be based on four factors – convenience, practicality, strength and attractiveness. The same factors must be taken into account when deciding on the fabric of a sports kit.

We wish you pleasant shopping and productive training!

* Review of the best according to the editorial board of expertology.ru. On the selection criteria. This material is subjective, does not constitute advertising and does not serve as a purchase guide. Before buying, you need to consult with a specialist.

Almost all sports brands have fitness clothing lines. There are brands that specialize exclusively in it. If earlier many practiced in ordinary suits, today it is difficult to meet a person in stretched sweatpants and a cotton T-shirt in a fitness room. Why is ordinary clothing not suitable for this trend? Comfort comes first. Leggings and tops are almost imperceptible on the body. A minimum of fittings reduces the risk of injury. The seams are not chafed during active movements.

The materials allow air to pass through, regulate the temperature, and are hypoallergenic. Many models are equipped with ventilated inserts. Wear resistance plays an important role. Regular machine washes will not harm the fabric, and the colors will retain their saturation. In addition to the practical side, the aesthetic is very important. Fitness clothing emphasizes the dignity of the figure, corrects problem areas, pleases the eye with unusual shapes and colors.

Experts advise even beginners to purchase equipment from trusted companies. The low price and the dubious reputation of the company will certainly affect the effectiveness of training, as well as the appearance. To facilitate the choice, we have prepared a review of 8 brands that produce high-quality fitness clothing, as professional athletes and amateurs were able to see.

Gym Clothing I How to choose?

Classes in the gym are distinguished by their democratic character. You do not come to a fashion show and not to a dinner party, you go to training – where you need to work on yourself, and not be distracted by yourself and not distract strangers with your appearance. Therefore, you just need to look neat, and your clothes should be durable and comfortable. Of course, it should be appropriate for the type of physical activity that you are doing.I mean you don’t need a bike helmet if you are powerlifting. And the garden gloves should probably be left at home, despite the fact that they seem so comfortable to you and it is so comfortable to hold the barbell in them.

I would like to give you some practical advice on how to choose clothes for your gym. You will learn about some simple rules that are recommended to be followed when choosing clothes, and this will allow you to make your workouts more productive and comfortable.

First, let’s decide what you will do. Because for different types of physical activity, it is recommended to select certain clothes and accessories.

If you are doing strength training

Clothing

  • There is no need to buy very bright clothes, because after constant washings (and you will have to wash them often) they will fade and lose their presentable appearance, they will look old and worn out.If you are a girl, then this can be an important factor for you, since we usually place great importance on appearance and strive to always look good. The reflection in the mirror should please you, period.
  • If you have long hair, take care not to loose it. Tie them up or braid them. Loose hair will distract you from your workout, as it will need to be regularly corrected or even combed. In addition, they can even become entangled in the machine.
  • Do not wear bulky jewelry or jewelry that is a pity to lose, break or scratch into the hall.
  • Your clothes must fit your size. It should not be small or large, so as not to break during the next exercise or interfere with your freedom of movement. Also, there is no need to neglect sports underwear, it is created primarily in order to meet the needs of athletes in comfort. Such clothes are designed not just for beauty, but so that during training you do not feel discomfort and do not worry about your appearance.

Shoes

Footwear should be mentioned separately. This is one of the most important elements of a sports wardrobe, which many, unfortunately, take lightly. Let me remind you that gym shoes have a number of specific requirements.

It must have a thin and rigid sole. No puffy, airy chunky soles, no running shoes. The thing is that when performing strength exercises, hard contact with the supporting surface is necessary.Only a thin and rigid sole can provide stable contact with the floor of the athlete and prevent loss of balance when working with heavy weights. It is worth mentioning the special athletic shoes – weightlifting shoes. If you are serious about and focused on results in strength sports, then perhaps you should think about purchasing them. Squatting in them is very convenient and, importantly, less traumatic.

Compression linen

It is also worth mentioning compression garments. If you have a predisposition to varicose veins, then you should definitely pay attention to special compression underwear that will save you from problems with blood vessels. Compression underwear is well worth the money as it is a specialized product designed to protect your health.

For girls …

If you are a girl you will need gloves for sports. They will protect your palms from calluses and skin damage, allow you to hold the sports equipment more firmly in your hands, and prevent it from slipping. If you have a weak grip and your forearms are not very strong, then you will need wrist straps. This is a handy accessory that will allow you to lift large enough weights without worrying about weak forearms. Although there are straps in most gyms, for hygienic reasons it is better to have your own straps that only you will use.

If you do yoga

As you may know, there are many directions in yoga.If the direction that you have chosen is active enough, then you should choose natural breathable fabrics that will absorb moisture and will not interfere with your movements. When choosing clothing for the top of the body, you should give preference to clothing with short sleeves, since many asanas involve active movement of the hands, and therefore, the sleeves should not bulge and interfere. The neckline should be comfortable. Do not forget that there are some poses in which even sportswear can sometimes fail.

It is not recommended to wear short shorts during yoga training, also for reasons of hygiene, because most of the skin will be in contact with the surface of the mat and the floor.

There are also specialized socks and rubberized gloves for yoga practice. Both of these accessories will help you have good grip on the floor during asanas of any difficulty.

Most large gyms offer their own yoga mats, but if you are serious about doing this type of physical activity, then I recommend that you get your own yoga mat.If you are a beginner, you can start with a thicker, softer rug, and eventually, as your body gets used to such loads, move on to a thinner one.

Conclusion

As you can see, the approaches to the choice of clothing for different types of physical activity differ. However, no matter what kind of sport you choose, on the Myprotein website you can choose for yourself sportswear and accessories of the highest quality that meet the requirements and requests of any, even the most sophisticated athletes.

Clothes for the hall, sportswear for the street – you will find all this in the relevant sections of the site. Whichever activity you choose, you can be sure that Myprotein will not let you down!

90,000 what to run in and how to dress properly

Running in winter can be just as comfortable and enjoyable if you choose the right equipment. In this article, we’ll show you how to protect yourself from the elements and what clothing you should wear for running during the cold season.

How to run outdoors in winter?

When choosing clothes for running, consider your own characteristics: individual cold tolerance, pace of training, features of blood circulation in the arms and legs, sweating. Therefore, all recommendations for choosing clothing for running are conditional. But there are general rules, following which you can choose comfortable equipment.

The basic principle of winter running gear – layering:

  • 1 layer wicks moisture and keeps the skin dry – thermal underwear
  • 2 layer keeps warm – long sleeve or thin fleece
  • 3 layer protects against wind and snow – windbreaker or membrane jacket

Depending on the weather, change the number of layers and the thickness of the items. This principle works in any weather.

Winter running socks

Unlike regular cotton running socks, running socks wick moisture away, do not chafing, and even when wet, keep you warm. For winter running, regular running socks are enough, just choose one from the non-light series. If your feet are constantly cold, pick up thermal socks. And most importantly, don’t run in short socks! It’s weird to see a runner looking after joint health and running with bare ankles.

Thermal underwear

There is nothing worse in winter running than wet clothes. This is not only discomfort, but also the risk of hypothermia. Thermal underwear solves this problem by transferring moisture to the outer layers of clothing and retaining heat near the skin.

Get some kits if you run every day. It is better to choose sets for different temperatures – so you will be ready for any weather from autumn to spring, there will be fewer problems in terms of washing and drying.

THERMAL UNDERWEAR FOR RUNNING IN WINTER

Thermal shorts – underwear made of the same material as thermal underwear – moisture-wicking and breathable. The element is far from necessary, but they get wet much less than regular underwear and keep you warm.

Longsleeve

Longsleeve is a jacket with long sleeves. Running long sleeves are made from synthetic materials. The properties are the same as for all technological clothing: moisture wicking, durability, heat retention even after getting wet. Used as a second layer on thermal underwear under a windbreaker in cold weather. In the off-season, it can be used as an outer layer without a windbreaker or jacket.

MEN’S LONGSLEAVES | WOMEN’S LONGSLEAVES

Windbreakers and jackets

A winter jacket for running should be windproof – this is the main requirement. It is better to have several running jackets of different weights:

  • Thin windproof jacket against wind and rain. In combination with thermal underwear and fleece, it can be used in a small minus.
  • Heavyweight running jacket with windstopper and padded insulation. Usually these are made of a multi-layer material, such as softshell. It combines insulation, wind and moisture protection. Not all running firms make jackets for harsh winters, so runners use ski warm-up jackets.

Pants & Tights

Depending on the weather, wear insulated tights, thin windproof jogging pants or warm softshell pants. Here are approximate clothing options for different weather:

  • In cool weather above 0 – tights
  • At t around 0 and light minus – tights with thermal underwear or light pants
  • At t −10 and below – thermal underwear and softshell pants

Buff, gate, bandana

Universal accessory for any weather. They call it differently: buff, gate, scarf, bandana, trumpet. Despite the thin material, it saves the skin from frostbite and insulates the throat. This accessory is a must have for every winter runner.

How to use the bandana buff?

Hat for running in winter

Hat for running in winter should also wick moisture away, dry quickly and preferably have wind protection. For running, it is better to use synthetic hats without wool and cotton. When choosing a hat, always pay attention that it covers your ears from the wind.

Gloves or mittens

Most runners get by with insulated running gloves with windstopper, but mittens are useful in harsh climates. Comfortable and technologically advanced mittens can be found at ski shops. Can be worn separately or over thin running gloves.
