Ibuprofen – Overview

Ibuprofen is a medication sometimes used for its analgesic and antipyretic effects. People who are interested in a prescription version of ibuprofen can use Push Health to connect with a medical provider who can prescribe ibuprofen medication, including generic ibuprofen 600 mg and ibuprofen 800 mg tablets, when appropriate and clinically indicated to do so.

What Is Ibuprofen Used For?

Ibuprofen, marketed under brand names such as Advil or Motrin, is similar to celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac (Pennsaid, Voltaren), etodolac (Lodine), ketoprofen (Orudis, Ourvail), ketorolac (Acular, Toradol), mefenamic acid (Ponstel), meloxicam (Mobic), naproxen (Naprosyn), nabumetone (Relafen) and oxaprozin (Daypro) in that it belongs to a class of medications known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Ibuprofen differs from acetaminophen in this way. Ibuprofen is used in a variety of clinical situations with the general goals of reducing fever or pain. Ibuprofen is thought to work by blocking the production of prostaglandins through the nonselective inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes. Prostaglandins increase the amount of inflammation, pain and fever during disease states and reducing their presence is how ibuprofen is thought to exert its clinical effects. Ibuprofen tablets are typically indicated for relief of mild to moderate pain, symptoms related to rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. Ibuprofen is also combined with the drug famotidine in the medication Duexis.

Ibuprofen- Dosage and Cost

Generic ibuprofen medication is generally available as ibuprofen 200 mg tablets, ibuprofen 400 mg tablets, ibuprofen 600 mg tablets, and ibuprofen 800 mg tablets. Ibuprofen itself is found as a white powder that dissolves well in organic solvents and has a melting point under 80° C. Ibuprofen is well absorbed and peak levels in the serum are usually achieved within two hours. The serum half life of ibuprofen is typically under two hours and ibuprofen is primarily eliminated via the urine within 24 hours. Generic ibuprofen is relatively inexpensive when compared to other types of medications, costing under $5 for thirty tablets of ibuprofen 800 mg at many pharmacies in the United States. Ibuprofen coupons can frequently be found online. Insurance plans may cover the cost of ibuprofen tablets, particularly when requested as part of an ibuprofen prescription. Ibuprofen should be stored between 20° C and 25° C but consult the package insert for specific instructions.

Can I Buy Ibuprofen Online?

Ibuprofen is available as ibuprofen OTC (over-the-counter) in the United States. However, prescription versions of ibuprofen cannot be dispensed by a pharmacy without a prescription from a medical provider. Additionally, for prescription ibuprofen, one cannot just buy ibuprofen online without first getting a valid prescription. People who want an ibuprofen prescription, however, can use Push Health to connect with a medical provider who can prescribe generic ibuprofen, including ibuprofen 800 mg and 600 mg tablets, when appropriate to do so.

Ways to Save on Ibuprofen

Even though ibuprofen is not an expensive drug, the cost can add up if you are sharing the bottle with family, or need to take it often. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the cost of ibuprofen.

Buy a Generic Alternative

As shown in the tables above, the generic versions of ibuprofen cost less, and sometimes much less, than brand-name Advil and Motrin. Not every medication offers a generic alternative, but you should consider looking for them whenever you go to the pharmacy to save money.

Use Your Flexible Savings Account

If you have a Flexible Savings Account (FSA), through your health insurance plan, you may be able to use the funds to pay for ibuprofen. Your insurance provider will have a list of eligible medications you can use your FSA funds for. Before going to the pharmacy, check the details of your coverage to make sure ibuprofen is FSA eligible.

Ibuprofen Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The cost of ibuprofen in 2021 varies by a number of factors including dose, brand, and where you buy it. Our research team answers a few related questions below.

How can I save money on prescription drugs?

Drugs are expensive and if you need multiple, the costs can add up quickly. Before going to the pharmacy, call your doctor or pharmacy to ask if there are generic versions available. You can also use your FSA if you have one, or join a discount drug membership program to access exclusive discounts. Check out our article for additional tips on how to save money on prescription drugs.

What is the difference between ibuprofen and acetaminophen?

Both ibuprofen and acetaminophen, commonly known as Advil and Tylenol, are used to reduce fever and pain. The difference between ibuprofen and acetaminophen is that ibuprofen is an NSAID and acetaminophen belongs to a class of drugs called analgesics.

Each drug type has its own share of side effects. Ibuprofen can cause:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Bleeding or ulceration of the stomach (mainly in the elderly)

Acetaminophen generally has fewer side effects but can cause:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation

When should I take Ibuprofen?

According to Hsu, “You should use ibuprofen for treating acute (short-term) pain caused by only a few days or weeks of inflammation or soreness. Ibuprofen can also be used to treat feverish conditions like colds, flu, and ear infection.

Doctors prescribe ibuprofen to help reduce fever, swelling, and pain. However, there are many possible side effects of this drug. You should never take Ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Aspirin if you have asthma, high blood pressure (hypertension), kidney disease, stomach ulcer, or bleeding problems.

Bottom Line

Ibuprofen is relatively inexpensive compared to other prescription drugs because there are generic alternatives. Most pharmacies carry their own brand of ibuprofen as well as brand-name Advil and Motrin.

The cost of prescription drugs can add up, but Mira can help you get up to 80% off. With memberships starting at just $25 per month, members can access low-cost urgent care visits, affordable lab testing too. Sign up today and get started!

Description

Ibuprofen coated tablets – anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic drug.

Active ingredients

Ibuprofen

Release form

Tablets

Composition The tablet contains 200 mg ibuprofen (active substance). Excipients: potato starch, magnesium stearate for the pharmaceutical industry, aerosil (colloidal silicon dioxide), beeswax, vanillin, food gelatin, acid red 2C for pharmaceutical purposes, basic magnesium carbonate (magnesium hydroxycarbonate), wheat flour, low molecular weight medical polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone ), granulated sugar (sucrose), titanium dioxide.

Pharmacological effect

Ibuprofen is a derivative of propionic acid and has analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects due to non-selective blockade of cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 and has an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of prostaglandins. The analgesic effect is most pronounced in inflammatory pain. The analgesic activity of the drug does not belong to the narcotic type. Like all NSAIDs, ibuprofen exhibits antiplatelet activity.

Pharmacokinetics

Ibuprofen is well absorbed from the stomach. Tmax – about 1 hour. Absorption is slightly reduced when taking the drug after meals. Ibuprofen is approximately 99% bound to plasma proteins. It is slowly distributed in the synovial fluid and excreted from it more slowly than from plasma. Ibuprofen is metabolized in the liver mainly by hydroxylation and carboxylation of the isobutyl group. The CYP2C9 isoenzyme is involved in the metabolism of the drug.. After absorption, about 60% of the pharmacologically inactive R-form of ibuprofen is slowly transformed into the active S-form. Ibuprofen has a biphasic elimination kinetics. The half-life (T1 / 2) from plasma is 2-3 hours. Up to 90% of the dose can be found in the urine as metabolites and their conjugates. Less than 1% is excreted unchanged in the urine and, to a lesser extent, in the bile. Ibuprofen is completely eliminated within 24 hours.
