Maintaining momentum in your self-discovery journey can be challenging, but it’s crucial for continued growth and development. Here are some strategies to help you stay engaged:

1. Set Realistic Goals

Break down your self-discovery journey into smaller, achievable goals. This approach can help you maintain motivation and track your progress more effectively.

2. Create a Supportive Environment

Surround yourself with people who encourage and support your personal growth. Consider joining support groups or finding a mentor who can guide you on your journey.

3. Practice Mindfulness

4. Embrace New Experiences

Regularly step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Novel experiences can reveal unexpected aspects of yourself and provide fresh perspectives on life.

5. Maintain a Growth Mindset

Approach challenges and setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth. A growth mindset can help you stay resilient and committed to your self-discovery journey, even when faced with obstacles.

Tools and Resources for Self-Discovery

To support your self-discovery journey, consider utilizing these tools and resources:

1. Personality Assessments

Tools like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Enneagram, or Big Five personality test can provide insights into your personality traits and tendencies.

Keep a journal to record your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Regular journaling can help you identify patterns and gain deeper insights into yourself.

Overcoming Challenges in the Self-Discovery Process

While embarking on a journey of self-discovery can be incredibly rewarding, it’s not without its challenges. Here are some common obstacles you might encounter and strategies to overcome them:

1. Fear of the Unknown

Self-discovery often involves venturing into uncharted territory, which can be intimidating. To overcome this fear, remind yourself that growth occurs outside your comfort zone. Take small, manageable steps and celebrate each milestone along the way.

2. Resistance to Change

As you uncover new aspects of yourself, you may feel resistant to implementing changes in your life. Acknowledge this resistance as a natural part of the process. Focus on the potential benefits of change and visualize the positive outcomes of your personal growth.

3. Dealing with Uncomfortable Truths

Self-discovery may reveal aspects of yourself that you find difficult to accept. Practice self-compassion and remember that acknowledging these truths is the first step towards personal growth and positive change.

4. Balancing Self-Discovery with Daily Responsibilities

Finding time for self-reflection amidst busy schedules can be challenging. Prioritize your self-discovery journey by scheduling dedicated time for introspection and personal development activities. Even small, consistent efforts can yield significant results over time.

5. Maintaining Motivation

The self-discovery process can be lengthy, and it’s natural for motivation to fluctuate. To stay motivated, regularly remind yourself of your reasons for embarking on this journey. Set short-term goals and reward yourself for achieving them.

By anticipating these challenges and preparing strategies to overcome them, you can navigate your self-discovery journey with greater resilience and determination.

Integrating Self-Discovery into Daily Life

To make self-discovery a sustainable and ongoing process, it’s essential to integrate it into your daily life. Here are some practical ways to do so:

1. Morning Reflection

Start your day with a brief period of reflection. Ask yourself questions like “What do I want to accomplish today?” or “How can I align my actions with my values today?” This practice sets a mindful tone for the day ahead.

2. Mindful Moments

Incorporate short mindfulness exercises throughout your day. Take a few deep breaths during your commute, practice mindful eating during lunch, or engage in a brief meditation during breaks.

3. Evening Review

Before bed, reflect on your day. Consider what you learned about yourself, what challenges you faced, and how you can apply these insights moving forward.

4. Weekly Check-Ins

Set aside time each week for a more in-depth self-reflection session. Review your progress, celebrate achievements, and set intentions for the coming week.

5. Continuous Learning

Make a habit of seeking out new knowledge and experiences. This could involve reading diverse literature, engaging in thought-provoking conversations, or trying new activities that challenge your perspectives.

6. Gratitude Practice

Regularly express gratitude for the positive aspects of your life. This practice can help you maintain a positive outlook and appreciate your personal growth journey.

By integrating these practices into your daily routine, you can make self-discovery an ongoing and enriching part of your life, rather than a separate or occasional activity.

As you continue on your journey of self-discovery, remember that it’s a lifelong process. Be patient with yourself, embrace the challenges as opportunities for growth, and celebrate the insights and progress you make along the way. Your commitment to self-discovery is a powerful investment in your personal growth and overall well-being.

How to keep yourself engaged with your self-discovery journey

Moving forward

Life moves fast. We have errands to run, work to do, and commitments to uphold. Learning how to begin self-discovery could be the last thing on our mind.

Our busy routines rarely give us time to consider what kind of life we actually want. Do you reflect on who you are while standing in line at the grocery store? Most likely, no. It can be hard to find the space to discover and become our most authentic selves. However, there are endless benefits that make taking the time worth it.

If you’re wondering how to begin self-discovery, know that the first step is making a commitment. Your journey will require you to focus, take action, and prioritize your needs. Remember, you can’t make a change without putting in the work.

Ready to find out how to begin your self-discovery journey? Let’s start by defining what self-discovery is.

What does self-discovery mean?

Self-discovery is the process of understanding your true self: your values, your needs and wants, even what food you like and dislike. You might have naturally learned some of these things about yourself over time. Yet, for a lot of people, we have a way of losing touch with our values and hiding our own motivations and preferences, even from ourselves. Going deeper into self-discovery can transform your life.

It’s one thing to know your personality type or your favorite meal. But true self-discovery starts when you evaluate your life and think about what’s energizing and what’s not. What will bring more joy into your life? What inspires you to jump out of bed each morning?

Once you’ve discovered more about yourself, you’ll have an easier time finding your life purpose and being your authentic self in work as well as in personal life. Understanding what’s been missing from your life will help you learn about yourself.

But don’t think you can finish this journey overnight. Self-discovery is an ongoing process. It requires you to dive in and examine all areas of your life and take the time to reflect. You’ll need courage and resilience to stick with the process — in the process of looking inward, you may learn things about yourself that you find hard to accept.

Discovering your inner self also requires lots of self-awareness, otherwise known as self-knowledge. Self-knowledge usually refers to your knowledge of your own feelings, beliefs, and desires. If you have more of this in your life, you’ll have better emotional regulation. This will help you better your personal and work relationships and improve your stress management.

Knowing more about the way your mind works also improves your empathy, helps you exercise better self-control, be more creative, and have higher self-esteem. You’ll even be more honest as a result.

There are endless benefits to learning how to start a self-discovery journey. The important thing is to take the first step and get started.

How to start a self-discovery journey

You may feel intimidated by the prospect of embarking on a journey of self-discovery. Where do you even begin? The steps to self-discovery aren’t set in stone. 7 elements of self-discovery

Discovering your true self will help you feel more confident in your decision-making abilities. This is true for all areas of your life because self-discovery helps you understand yourself on a deep level. You’ll know better than anyone else what’s good for you.

As you work to improve your sense of self-awareness, here are seven elements to keep in mind:

  1. Reflect on where you started and what you’re accomplishing each day
  2. Zero in on what gives you energy and what zaps your energy
  3. Visualize the person you want to be
  4. Follow where your passions and interests lead you
  5. Let go of your inner critic and any self-doubt
  6. Choose a life of meaning and be purposeful with your actions
  7. Be proud of your power, grit, and resilience during challenging times

BetterUp offers the guidance and objective support — not to mention accountability — that you need to start your journey. We’ll help you chart an organized and purposeful plan toward self-discovery.

Why is self-discovery so important?

Self-discovery is important because it helps us live more meaningful lives. You learn how to take better care of yourself when you understand yourself. Plus, you might find a more fulfilling career if you’re connected to your true self. And if you’re on a career path you’re truly passionate about, you’re more likely to succeed.

Perhaps you’ll learn that, although you’re an introvert, you’re also a people person. Taking care of our social health is always important, but maybe you need more social connection than you’d initially realized.

This also gives you more clarity on what you want your future to look like. By understanding yourself, you can chart a future that satisfies your needs and supports your well-being. Without self-discovery, you won’t live the most passionate and fulfilling life possible.

Let’s say that you do some reflecting and realize that your favorite projects at work are the ones you lead. That probably means that you have a talent or a passion for leadership. With that in mind, you can work to become a manager. You’ll have a clearer career path and find a role that you’re more passionate about.

And when you know yourself, you can recognize your strengths and weaknesses. Maybe you’re skilled at mindfulness, empathy, or compassion. Or you could be an amazing writer or public speaker. The best way to find out is to begin your self-discovery journey.

This process can help you see where you need to grow, too. If you need to strengthen your communication skills, for example, taking the time to reflect on yourself will show you that.

The impact of your self-discovery will touch other people’s lives, too. You can put your newly sharpened skills to work in your social life and form deeper relationships. This authenticity will help you become a better friend, coworker, and family member.

5 benefits of self-discovery

The road to self-discovery can look different for many people. But for everyone, it brings benefits that help you become your true self.

To put that into perspective, here are 5 benefits that you can experience after finding yourself:

1. Your relationships will thrive

Your relationships will be healthier when you better understand your core values and what you want out of your life. You’ll be able to identify toxic traits — yours or not — and solve deeper issues you have. You can then improve your social health by being more honest and open.

2. You’ll experience less self-criticism

Rather than criticize every mistake you make, you’ll know that mistakes sometimes happen because we’re human. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. Plus, with more self-awareness, you’ll learn to avoid some mistakes. Understanding why you’ve made an error is the first step to preventing it from happening again.

3. You’ll feel more creative

Self-expression is key for letting others know how you feel and for becoming more creative. But how can you express yourself if you don’t know who you are? Self-reflection will help you find your identity and learn how to express it.

4. You’ll have a better ability to focus on what you truly want

The ongoing process of discovering yourself requires you to be committed and focused. That practice will help you set and achieve goals with a better sense of self in mind. You can plan a future that embodies who you really are.

5. Your self-confidence will increase

Believing in yourself and your abilities can impact your professional and personal life. With more confidence, you’ll walk into new experiences as a whole person™, not someone who shies away from challenges or change. And as you begin your journey of self-improvement, your confidence will continue to grow.

How to keep yourself engaged with your self-discovery journey

Self-discovery isn’t something that you start and finish in one afternoon. It could take months, a year, or more to get to a point where you feel content with what you’ve discovered.

Throughout that process, here are a few ways you can keep yourself engaged and learning:

  • Stay organized with the career and person goals you’re working to achieve
  • Find journal prompts that keep you stimulated and thinking
  • Listen to podcasts, read books, and watch videos about other people’s journeys to make you feel inspired
  • Ask yourself questions like “Why do I like these things?” or “What impact do I want my choices to have on my life?”

Remember, finding your true self and defining your life purpose will be more than worth it.

Moving forward

The journey of self-discovery doesn’t involve only thinking about the future. It asks you to take a look at your past, too. Spending time revisiting past feelings and experiences can be tough. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help from your friends and family.

Knowing how to begin self-discovery is only the first step. In this process, you’ll need to get out of your comfort zone and ask yourself some hard questions. As you start, feel proud of yourself. It’s never too late to become more in touch with yourself and you’ll be so grateful you took the leap.

If you feel like you need some extra accountability to stay focused, BetterUp can help. You can experience what it’s like to reach new heights with a support system that brings out the best in you.

9 Ways To Kick Off Your Self-Discovery Journey

The process of self-discovery can be different for everyone and may include trying new things, journaling, and mental health support.

Have you ever stopped to consider exactly what you want from life? Maybe you’ve taken this first step toward self-discovery, but haven’t uncovered a path toward achieving your main goals.

Dreams, personal values, talents, even your personality traits may not always seem to matter much in the rush of daily life. But awareness of these characteristics can give you plenty of insight into your inner self.

Day-to-day priorities are important, certainly. But a life that’s nothing more than a series of going through the same motions usually doesn’t provide much enjoyment.

If you’ve reached a point in life where you find yourself asking, “Who am I, really?” some self-discovery can help you get to know yourself a little better.

Self-discovery might sound like a big, intimidating concept, but it’s really just a process of:

  • examining your life
  • figuring out what’s missing
  • taking steps toward fulfillment

There’s no better time for self-exploration than the present, so here are some tips to get you started.

Maybe your life has gone pretty smoothly according to guidelines parents, teachers, friends, and others have recommended. If that’s the case, you might not have given your true self much thought.

Many people end up defining themselves by their relationships with others or the things they’ve always done, never considering the possibility of anything different.

Without a clear idea of the things that matter to you or the person you hope to become, though, you’ll continue living for other people instead of yourself.

You don’t need to begin with a complete picture — after all, your journey is all about discovering what the full picture is.

But try asking yourself things like:

  • What do I want from life?
  • Where do I see myself in 5 years? 10?
  • What do I regret?
  • What makes me proud of myself?

The answers to these questions can give you a starting place. If you get stuck, it can help to think back to a time when you felt fulfilled and happy and consider what contributed.

Passions help give life purpose and make it rich and meaningful.

Maybe a passion for helping others guided you to the field of medicine, but your current position in medical billing doesn’t quite fulfill your urge to provide compassionate care.

Living out your passion might involve identifying the job you really want and researching the steps necessary for a career change. Or, maybe it’s exploring ways to volunteer with your skills as a street medic.

Keep in mind that passions don’t always have to be complex or relate to professional interests. Think about what you spend your free time doing on a day-to-day basis. What excites you and brings joy to your life?

Even interests like movies and music can offer insight. Taking some time to consider what you enjoy and look forward to most can help you discover ways to enrich your life.

Maybe you can’t name many passions. That’s OK! If you haven’t done much for yourself in a long time, you might not remember what you used to enjoy.

One good way to begin figuring this out? Do something new and totally different. You won’t know what you enjoy until you give it a shot, right?

Maybe you’ve always had an interest in artistic pursuits but never attempted anything after a college ceramics class. Check your local library or other community centers for free or low-cost adult learning classes.

If you can’t get to a class in person, try online tutorials. They might not be quite the same, but they can often teach you enough to know whether you’d like to continue pursuing the hobby.

Exploring new hobbies, especially ones you’ve never tried before, can sometimes feel a little overwhelming, especially if you go for the more adventurous options.

If you feel nervous, try to think of how proud and accomplished you’ll feel afterward. Beyond teaching you more about yourself, taking safe risks may boost your self-esteem.

Most people have a particular knack for something or other — crafting, home improvement, cooking, or any number of other skills. As part of the self-discovery process, you might consider taking some time to consider your unique abilities and how you might use them.

Maybe your friends always ask you to plan their parties or your neighbors regularly ask you for gardening tips. If these skills are something you can picture yourself developing, why not put them into practice?

Using your skills hones them, which can increase your confidence. Greater self-confidence, in turn, can encourage you to keep exploring these talents, along with any others you may not have noticed before.

Your personal values, or the specific qualities you view as most important and meaningful, can tell you a lot about your nature. These values can help illustrate the life you want to live as well as the behavior you expect from others.

Values might include:

  • honesty
  • compassion
  • loyalty
  • creativity
  • courage
  • intelligence

Clarifying these values can help you make certain you’re living them out. If you’ve never taken the time to explore what principles you find most valuable, making this part of your self-discovery process can have a lot of benefit.

When you want answers, start with a few questions.

  • Why do I do the things I do?
  • What drives me?
  • What am I missing?
  • What kind of impact do my choices have on the life I want?

Then, apply these questions to all areas of your life.

Don’t feel like you need to come up with answers immediately, though. Self-discovery takes time, and it’s most helpful to carefully consider your responses instead of grabbing at the first thing that comes to mind.

Above all, be honest with yourself. If you can’t come up with a good answer, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. But it does suggest that some change might help.

Learning works best when it’s treated as a lifelong process.

If you’ve always wanted to learn more about something in particular, take the time to study it. Books, manuals, or online tools can teach you quite a bit, especially if you’d like to develop technical skills or study historical or scientific concepts.

Apps can help you get started learning anything from meditation to foreign languages, so if you have an interest, look it up — chances are good there’s an app or free website dedicated to it.

In the end, whether you choose to take a class, learn from someone in the community, or teach yourself a new skill, expanding your knowledge is always a wise move.

If you kept a journal in adolescence, you might remember how it helped you explore your dreams and emotions. Picking up the habit of journaling (or blogging) again can help you get back in touch with yourself and learn more about the person you’ve become.

A journal can help with self-reflection, but it can also serve a more practical purpose. You can use your journal to ask yourself questions and answer them, or explore any of the above tips more deeply.

Journaling can also help you keep track of any patterns that keep coming up in your life. Learning more about unhelpful patterns can play an essential part in the self-discovery process. When you know what doesn’t work, you can begin repairing it.

Writing isn’t your strong point? That’s just fine. Simply jotting down whatever comes to mind can have benefit.

If you’re more artistically inclined, a sketch diary or other type of art journal can also help you explore your emotions and goals. Simply set pen to paper, envision your ideal future, and see what comes forth.

You may also want to try the “tombstone exercise,” a technique used in psychotherapy. It involves writing down what’s most important to you and what you stand for — and, essentially, what you want to appear on your tombstone.

When the process of self-discovery seems overwhelming and you don’t know where to start, therapy can provide a safe space to get some compassionate guidance.

You don’t need to experience mental health symptoms to benefit from professional support. Therapists help people sort through a range of issues, including goals clarification, career changes, and identity issues.

Wanting to learn more about yourself may not seem like a matter significant enough for therapy, but if you feel distressed or uncertain, therapy can absolutely have benefit.

Here’s how to get started.

The process of self-discovery looks different for everyone, but it’s generally not something that happens overnight. You do have somewhat of a jump start since you already know at least a little bit about yourself. But it still takes time and patience, just like getting to know someone else.

You’re in charge of the journey, but don’t feel afraid to meander off the main path. The more ground you cover through self-exploration, the more you’ll discover about yourself.

How to unlock your potential in 2023?

Life is an amazing adventure filled with achievement, joy and opportunity. However, on the way to self-realization, we often forget to celebrate our successes and be proud of our achievements. In a world where we are constantly striving for more and better, it is very important to allow ourselves moments of self-reflection and remembrance of the path traveled. It was such a moment for me to travel alone with a notebook in my hands and a few books to read. And who would have thought that my path to self-knowledge would take on new dimensions thanks to a meeting with a consultant named Konstantin.

Self-discovery as a way to see the new in the routine, the story of Ekaterina

My name is Ekaterina and I am an entrepreneur in the field of interior design. I have achieved many impressive results in my career and succeeded in creating unique and inviting spaces for my clients. However, lately I have begun to feel a certain melancholy and loss of inspiration. I needed a new perspective that would help me reach my full potential.

One sunny weekend, I decided to go on a solo trip. Taking a blank notepad and a few inspiring books with me, I decided to spend some time alone with myself and my thoughts. The place of my trip was a cozy resort town on the seashore.

After arriving, I found a cozy cafe where I ordered lunch and started flipping through the pages of the book…. .

It so happened that I met Konstantin, he was a consultant specializing in personal growth and development, and I understood that this is exactly what I need now – help in unlocking my potential and rethinking my goals.

Within a few hours of our meeting, Konstantin helped me look at my life from a new angle. He asked me deep questions and listened carefully to my answers. We talked about my achievements, about what I have achieved in my career, and Konstantin insisted that I write down all these successes in my notebook. He said it would help me feel proud and confident.

As we continued to talk, Konstantin helped me realize that I had not yet reached my full potential. He showed me that my skills and talents could be applied to other areas of design that I had not previously considered. Thanks to his guidance, I felt a new strength and enthusiasm in myself.

A weekend trip with a notebook and books made me realize that our personal growth and success are closely related to our inner world. Sometimes we need to pause and look at all that we have achieved in order to find new ways to realize our potentials.

Conclusions:

  1. Celebrate your accomplishments: Record your progress and be proud of it. It helps you realize your progress and boosts your self-confidence.
  2. Time for self-reflection: Go on a solo journey or spend time alone to better understand your desires, goals and potential.

What is self-knowledge in our life?

Self-knowledge is a key aspect of our lives that has a profound emotional and psychological effect on us. It helps us develop our strengths, understand our weaknesses, and become more authentic adults. In our search history described earlier, Konstantin, our consultant, played an important role in the girl’s self-discovery process.

He not only provided her with the necessary support and understanding, but also helped her understand her goals and desires. Konstantin helped the girl gain self-confidence and understand her value in her chosen field of activity. He became her mentor and guided her inner journey of self-discovery.

One of the quotes that captures the essence of history and emphasizes the importance of self-knowledge is:

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of wisdom” (Aristotle).

This quote refers to the story of a girl who began her journey of self-discovery and gained a deep understanding of herself and her goals.

Through working with Konstantin and conscious self-examination, she became wiser and stronger, gaining confidence in her abilities.

Aristotle’s quotation indicates that self-knowledge is the basis for the development of wisdom.

When we know ourselves—our passions, fears, values, and motivations—we can make more informed decisions and build a more authentic life. It allows us to understand and develop our strengths, as well as recognize and overcome our weaknesses.

In a girl’s story, self-knowledge helped her accept her uniqueness and overcome her limitations. She gained confidence in herself and became more focused on achieving her goals. She realized that self-knowledge is the key to success and happiness in life.

Note the importance of self-knowledge as it is the basis for developing our potential and wisdom. This allows us to accept the real ourselves, realize our goals and become the real masters of our lives.

Self-knowledge is an ongoing process that takes time, self-reflection and openness. It allows us to delve into the depths of our own being, understand our passions and motivations, and build an authentic and happy life. Working on self-knowledge can be a challenge, but it opens the door to developing our personalities and achieving success.

Therefore, I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. If you are interested in further exploring self-knowledge and overcoming your limitations, I recommend making an appointment with Konstantin. He will help you find your way to your true self and the attainment of wisdom.

Self-discovery: Journey to the true Self, Anna’s story

In our fast and demanding world, we often forget about the most important aspect of our life – our own “Self”.

  • What are we really like?
  • What values and motivations drive us?
  • What have we achieved and what are we proud of in our lives?

These questions are the basis for self-knowledge, a process that helps us understand ourselves and become more aware of our actions and choices.

Today I would like to share with you the story of a girl named Anna, who decided to take a notebook and start the journey of self-discovery. Anna, a successful interior design entrepreneur, often felt like something was missing her. She achieved a lot in her career, but her level of satisfaction and happiness did not match her achievements.

One day, while reading an article about the importance of self-knowledge, Anna realized that she had missed an important aspect of her life – understanding herself. She realized that in order to become fully authentic and successful, she needed to go through a process of self-discovery. Inspired by this idea, she decided to take a blank notebook and write down all that she has achieved and is proud of in her life.

Thus began Anna’s journey to her true self. She went on a solo weekend trip with a few books to read and a notebook in hand. During those few days, she immersed herself in her thoughts, reviewing her successes and failures, remembering moments of joy and sorrow. She gave herself permission to introspect and allowed herself to be open and honest with herself.

At this time, Anna turned to a professional self-knowledge consultant, Konstantin, who helped her on this exciting journey. Konstantin was an experienced specialist in the field of personality development and psychology, and he supported Anna at every step of her self-exploration. He asked her important questions, helping her realize her values, fears, and dreams. With Constantine’s help, Anna began to gain clarity about her goals and true aspirations.

Stay tuned to learn more about the importance of self-knowledge and how it can change our lives for the better.

The cultural code is what forms us as a person and our ideas about the world, helps to find “ours” and define the boundaries of the norm. But at the same time, it prevents you from looking deeper into yourself and getting to know yourself for real, and not with the ideas about yourself learned from childhood. Traveling and contact with other cultures is the best way to try on alternative cultures, worldviews, models of life. For example, in our (average – Russian, although on the territory of Russia you can find a huge number of “cultural codes” exotic for us) traditions, people grow up at the age of 17-18, and in some other cultures – already at 14 years old, and this is a very significant discrepancy. Someone got married at the age of 12, and their cultural code simply does not provide for other scenarios. And someone in his youth personally experienced the famous “summer of love” in San Francisco and does not accept any restrictions and dogmas.

Video of the day

Coming into contact with alternative models of life during your journey, you pass this information through yourself and think – “Can I do this? Does it suit me? Would I like to move here? I had a group ask if it was possible to move to the Quechua Indian community in Peru. It turned out that yes, you can – this is an open community, you just need to learn the Quechua language, prove your adequacy to the elder, and they will accept you – please live in the mountains, grow alpacas, participate in the life of the community, if this is your happiness. But it is impossible to try it on yourself, lying at home on the couch or on the beach on a sunbed.

Just lying on the beach like a zucchini for a week or two is also a normal scenario if you are physically and psychologically exhausted. Just to sleep and eat, not to rush anywhere and not to emotionally react to anything – this is also a normal need of the body. But such a vacation (you can’t even call it a trip) does not change anything in you and in your life. Whereas a real journey, which is synonymous with adventure, has a huge transformative power, and for each individual change request, you can choose your own tool.

Some people strive for spiritual awakening and growth, while others need exciting extreme experiences that most people are afraid to even think about, but after which the quality of life changes. For example, none of the tourists ever meets sunrises on a regular tour, because you have to get up at 4:30, at 5 in the morning you have to go somewhere – who will have enough willpower for this? I always include at least one sunrise in my tours. Because the sunrise in Machu Picchu or the Grand Canyon is the immersion of a person not only in the location, but also in himself, this gives rise to inner beauty, glow, energy. The model of self-replenishment, self-replenishment through a different perception of the world around is turned on and helps to become happier and more successful – which, in the end, each of us wants, you just need to find your own way.

What challenges does travel solve?

1. Get to know the real you

We grow and form as a person in a certain cultural paradigm, in our own “social bubble”. And if you do not expand your knowledge about the world, about people of other cultures, you run the risk of not knowing and understanding a lot about yourself.

2. Feel like omnipotent

To make some kind of breakthrough in life, to achieve grandiose goals, sometimes you need the experience of a “superman”. And you can just get it on a journey by placing yourself in an unusual experience. Going to hard-to-reach regions, conquering your first (if not even the highest) peak, climbing Kilimanjaro or spending the night in Bolivia in huts without Wi-Fi high in the mountains, in physically uncomfortable rarefied air, you accomplish your personal feat. Having passed such a challenge, you feel omnipotent, ready to go and conquer any heights, just tear this world apart. Feeling this extreme brightness of life, you get an incomparable boost of energy and transformational experience.

3. Expand networking to a global scale

In the modern rhythm of life, we don’t have time to develop relationships, for high-quality interaction: we crossed paths for about an hour, phoned for half an hour – that’s all “social connections”. And while traveling, you spend at least seven days side by side with other people, agree among yourself, show up, get to know each other, become practically a family. In one of the groups, we had one man for six girls, and he, naturally, immediately took on a lot of male “physical” tasks: he carried six heavy suitcases, managed to wipe the mirrors and windows of my minivan at stops, opened the door for each girl (and not just his wife). And during this journey, he fully revealed himself as an incredibly gallant man. And even if you travel alone, somewhere you will meet the owner of the bakery, somewhere with a guide, somewhere with a group of tourists from different countries – and now your networking reaches global proportions, and these acquaintances at the right time can move you towards your goal.

4. Raise your own status

Your travels, adventures, experiences are your life portfolio, something that “sells” you as a person. For a new acquaintance, you are no longer “Masha, work as a sales manager, hang out with friends at the bar on weekends”, but “Masha, climbed the WyWash, crossed the Pacific Ocean on a yacht, dived in the Galapagos”. Immediately plus a thousand points to you in the eyes of others, a completely different perception of you as a person. This is a piggy bank of achievements no less important (and sometimes more impressive) than career heights.

Where to go?

Spiritual practices and self-knowledge

“Spiritual tourism” has a very wide range: from soft measured yoga tours and wellness to shamanism practices and pilgrimage tours.

  • Retreat and wellness “for any level of training” is Bali, India, Maldives, Seychelles, as well as Russia, where wellness infrastructure is also actively developing.
  • Acquaintance with shamanism and other “exotic” religions for us – Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, Altai Territory, Buryatia, Yakutia, Nepal with its stunningly beautiful nature of the Himalayas (the trek around Annapurna in itself can cause religious ecstasy, enlightenment and zen, but it is also suitable for beginners, because throughout the route there are excellent lodges where you can comfortably stay travelers).
  • Pilgrimage on sacred routes – Kamino de Santiago, Holy Land (Israel), Athos in Greece, Butane with its endless smiles and grace: the religious atmosphere in Butan is very unobtrusive, the boots are hospitable and speak freely in English from the age of five, the level of hotels are excellent, but the temples built on the Sky Utes deserve special attention. Ah, and the bewitching Buddhist ritual of Puja.

Reboot through active rest

  • Hiking is a hiking trip across the plains or mountains, a kind of “dynamic meditation”, when the feet walk kilometer after kilometer, and the mind turns over from the incredible beauty around. Hiking makes it possible to reach such corners of nature where no transport will pass, to take your best photographs in life, to meet the most unforgettable sunrises. And also – to meet animals in their natural habitat, get to know the locals and join their way of life, make sure of the limitlessness of their own physical capabilities. In terms of difficulty and “wildness”, hiking routes are very diverse – from those that can be walked on stilettos or driven in a wheelchair, to those that require really remarkable endurance. The best hiking is in Nepal, in the Alps, in Patagonia. Although, for starters, you can try your hand in the USA and in Europe.
  • Diving is both a physical practice and a visual experience that would not be possible in any other environment. Depending on the level of training, “visiting the fish” you can go to Egypt, the Maldives, and South Africa, but the real paradise for divers is the Philippines. For gastronomic tourism, for example, the Philippines is completely unsuitable, but only here, on the island of Malapascua, if you don’t drown along the way, you will see several thresher sharks in one dive, and this is a very rare and very beautiful shark. Or another must see for divers – the sardine run around South Africa, this is one of the top events for underwater photographers and divers, when the whole underwater world gathers to hunt these migratory sardines. Similar “cult” locations and events, by the way, are available for both surfers and kitesurfers.

Enrichment through new experiences

  • Event tourism – travel, both completely tied to some event, and including some event as a “icing on the cake”. For example, you can go to the Burning Man festival in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, USA, and for a week immerse yourself in an atmosphere of creativity, creation and self-expression without boundaries and almost without rules. Discoveries and revelations – about oneself, about people, about society – are guaranteed to everyone, there will be so much entertainment that it is impossible to see even 10% of events and combinations of the incompatible. And you can include in the travel program a visit to a concert of your favorite band or a trip to the opera.
  • Gastro tourism is an opportunity not only to have a delicious meal, but to learn the culture of another country, another people through food. There are countries where the national cuisine is incredibly tasty – Peru, Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico. There are “high cuisine capitals of the world” with many Michelin-starred restaurants – France, for example. And there are countries from which you should not expect delicious dishes, they take other virtues: these are the Philippines, Brazil, China, Myanmar. By the way, gastro-tourism is not only eating food itself, but also culinary master classes – imagine how exciting it can be to cook Peruvian ceviche, Moroccan tagine and real Tom Yam and Pho Bo in the homeland of any of these dishes, among the local flavor! You can also visit a coffee farm in Colombia or an oyster farm in the USA, hunt for crabs or sea urchins. And lovers of parties and nightlife will be interested in bar tours (pub crawl or bar hopping) to the best places in the city with non-standard cocktails (for example, I discovered a “pisco sour” with a taste of black corn instead of the classic lemon version).

How to get the most benefit and development from travel?

  • Don’t set high expectations or challenge yourself to travel, such as “I’m going to be climbing in Nepal to figure out why I can’t break through the glass ceiling in a quarry. ” Just do it and enjoy the process, the changes within you will start one way or another and, perhaps, the glass ceiling will burst by itself – or stop worrying you.
  • Do not chop from the shoulder. Even if during some extreme (whether physical, psychological or cultural) experience it seemed to you that you understood everything about yourself and now turn your life around abruptly, do nothing. A real assessment of the experience, reflection will take place within three weeks after the trip. The Burning Man festival even has an unwritten rule – do not make any vital decisions for three weeks after you have left the festival.
  • Listen to yourself and your reactions. Even if everyone says that skydiving is cool, but somehow you are not very good, then you don’t need it. And that’s ok too. Any personal growth, any changes in life should occur in stages, in small steps, in a comfortable mode.

Travel that can change both you and your life is certainly not a product of the mass market, it is piece work that requires many months of preparation, understanding of many organizational nuances and pitfalls, and serious investments.
