Don’t be scared by all these reviews. Happy people don’t write reviews lol. I have been taking this for 3 months with the biggest issue being breakthrough bleeding/spotting. It’s tolerable and otherwise side effects have been OK. I gained maybe two pounds and I think it was all in my boobs.

At first, I loved this form of birth control, I was actually loosing weight. Small break through bleeding, no acne, no cramping, great libido, everything was fine for me. Well I ran out of the 5 samples I received from my doctor and I recently switched to the generic form of lo-loestrin due to insurance and costs. It’s been about 4 months and I’m miserable, I hate myself, I get sad or mad about th…

While my periods were very short with little cramping, I got a lot of hormonal acne after the second month, sore nipples and breast. I also cry a lot now about absolutely everything. Somewhat lowered my sex drive, anyways I’m switching brands solely because of the hormonal acne, it’s painful big ones no thanks!

I have PCOS and other complications but this birth control has actually made me lose weight. Quickly at that. Less acne as well. Ive been a bit moody but its hard to say if thats from the bc. My period dragged out a little longer but significantly less bleeding and less painful. Overall great compared to others Ive used.

I have been taking Lo Loestrin for 6 months now due to very heavy periods (I have adenomyosis and am in perimenopause), and so far it has been excellent. I went from heavy periods (2 days taking advil every few hours), to light spotting. It’s almost scary how I almost don’t have a period anymore, it has been amazing. I have no side effects except a light headache for a few days during my period and I think I’ve gained a few pounds (3 lbs). No other side effects, and I’ve tried everything (IUD, other pills) and this is the only one that’s worked! Read More Read Less

I’m starting off by saying that our bodies are different. What works for one may not work for you and there is only one way to find it… by trying it yourself. Do not take every review to heart because your experience could be different. Now, when I first started taking loestrin fe 1/20, I was 17 and was on it for a few years. The only problem I had long effect was back acne and it was cystic. It would only flare up around the time I had a period. You must remember, the first two to three months of starting birth control can be rough before your body gets used to it. You’ll have break through bleeding, acne, etc. Now I hopped off of BC for some time and ended up having my daughter and was then put on Junel which is similar to Loestrin. Won’t go on about that bc we are reviewing loestrin here. Fast forward to being off loestein for about 4 years, I just now started it again. Im going on 4 months and had break through bleeding within the first three months. The Third month was only a day of bleeding. Mind you I’m also skipping my periods with this birth control. This time around, I’m not dealing with any acne like I did before. Bodies change as we grow so this may be why, who knows! My mood is fine, however. It prevents pregnancy great and I’m happy to use it. I do want to mention I never seen this pill cause weight gain. The years I was on ir prior, I mentioned the same weight without working out the entire time.Read More Read Less

I’ve been on Lo Loestrin Fe since I was 17 (I’m 24 now) & the only time I’ve ever had problems with it was when I first started taking it. I had a pretty painful heavy flow a few weeks after starting it. But now it’s great, my periods are so light I don’t even have to wear tampons on my period anymore. & I only get painful period cramps a few times out of the year!

I wanted to start on birth control for the first time and my doctor recommend to start on a low dosage. I started this medication a week ago and had to stop immediately. My sex drive was low, I was having extreme anxiety and headaches that wouldn’t let me fall asleep. I’m just got off the pill as of 2 days ago and I’m still having these massive headaches, fatigue and dizziness. Hopefully I get well soon.

Lolo helped with heavy bleeding with close to no side effects, I even kept my sex drive which doesn’t happen to me a lot on BC. I would have been extremely happy with this pill if not for this ONE side effect : severe vaginal itching that lasted for the whole year I was on it. Drs tested me and it wasn’t any type of infection. The itching went away a week after I stopped taking this pill.

I have been on this BC for at least 8years now. It has worked great in protecting against pregnancy. My only concern is that I haven’t had a period since I’ve been on the pill. My gyno reassured me that it’s normal and wouldn’t mess with my fertility but I am unsure of that. Stresses me a little as I will soon be trying out for kids. I did however stop the pill for 1 month about 4 years ago and I got a crazy heavy period that lasted 8 days. .. forgot how to handle it after years of not having a period. Read More Read Less

I am 19 and been taking this pill for about two weeks. I’ve been on multiple different birth controls since 14 due to endometriosis and painful periods. This has been the worst birth control. Within the two weeks I’ve been very emotional and cry to just about anything. Also got acne like crazyyyyy! I’ve never had acne.

Like many, I was hesitant about starting Lo Loestrin Fe, in part due to the negative reviews online. I started it for birth control purposes only and I am happy to report a positive experience thus far, with no negative side effects. My boobs are slightly fuller (I didn’t change cup size though) and I remember my dreams most nights now. My mood and energy levels are consistent with what they are like off birth control (no issues). My advice is to make decisions based on what is best for you. There is no one size fits all when it comes to medication. Read More Read Less

I started this medication as an add on to Mirena IUD to treat endometriosis and painful periods. After taking for nearly 3 years, i’ve not had a period since, my pain has lightened more and more over time and it’s been the easiest to take continuous birth control i’ve tried. I do have acne cyclicly and i do still ovulate, but it has also suppressed PMDD symptoms.

Ive been taking this birth control for almost 2 years now. It was originally prescribed to me when I was 16 and I had a period that was a full month of extremely heavy bleeding where I would be dizzy from blood loss at times. This pill helped and was wonderful for pain for about a year and then my periods became increasingly irregular and now I have not had my period in about 4 months. I am not pregnant and there are no signs of it coming but I do still have pain every day.

Effectiveness: The medication had one purpose, which was to ease menstrual cramping. It did the exact opposite. Cramps around the clock, minutes-long “episodes” as I’ve started to call them, all month long, multiple times a day. On am actual period they are constant and worse than the debilitating mess which occured before taking them.
On top of this, I’ve lost all pleasure drive, have random and disruptive headaches, and am almost always hungry despite being constantly nauseated.
Ease of use: It’s a pill. Hard to punch out, at that. But how difficult can a pill be?
Satisfaction: I’m told to just keep sticking with it until this stops, but I can’t do this for another three months until my follow-up. The one singular thing I needed medication for, is now constant and much worse. Trust your body- if it’s harming you, stop taking this pill. The side effects are WAY more common and severe than the packaging impresses on you.Read More Read Less

I first want to clarify that all bodies are different and will react different to birth control — that being said, I’ve been on Lo Loestrin Fe for about 8 years and it’s been smooth riding until recently. I used to have extremely heavy and painful periods (only lasted about 3 days tho). Lo was the first pill I was put on and it completely got rid of my period (for all 8 years). I gained about 10 pounds but it could’ve been in combination I started the pill same time I started college. I did end up losing weight and maintained it. Now, why did I stop taking lo? Within the last 2.5 years i’ve been having crazy cystic hormonal breakouts around my chin; I never had acne like this before. Given i’m in my mid-20s now I figured my hormones have changed. I’ve tried every skin and diet solution under the sun and finally decided it was time to try a new hormonal birth control to level out my body again. Read More Read Less

I wish the had a 0 star! DO NOT TAKE THIS BIRTH CONTROL! This has been the BIGGEST mistake of my life. I took this pill for 4 months because I had really bad cramps and the recommended it. Little did I know it was going to take me on a ride to a place I never wanted to visit. Everyone’s body is different. But wow I have been very emotional, mood swings , panic attacks, bad thoughts, headaches and had my period twice a month. At first I was I didn’t want to believe that it was the pill. Till 5 days ago I had the worse experience of my life. I had the worse panic attack. With everything under the book. Please do your research. And don’t make the same mistake I did. I started taking this a little bit ago and it is the worst. I’ve gained so much weight and my appetite increased so much. My acne is horrible. I’m severely exhausted and depressed. I hâte the way my body looks bc of the weight I gained. And ever since I started taking it I’ve had a non stop period. I’m sick of this and want to go off so bad. This pill completely stopped my periods which is a plus, however it came with a lot of down falls I didn’t figure out until I narrowed it down to this being the only change that has happened. I have gotten extremely ill every month for the past 3 months out of the 9 months I’ve been on it. Illnesses varying from RANDOM uncontrollable panic attacks that last anywhere from 20 minutes to 6 hours (hospitalization from fainting due to a heart rate of 127 for 6 hours) even Xanax prescription wouldnt work; I’ve been getting UTI’s every other week, one lasted so long despite antibiotics it turned into a kidney infection; I have close to no libido, which is a downfall on my relationship.
If you have ANY major stressors that have happened or is in progress ie college or clinical study… avoid this pill as much as possible. Read More Read Less

Unwanted pregnancy is a serious problem for women. But thanks to the development of modern medicine, it is quite solvable. Today, a sufficient number of methods are offered, with a high degree of probability capable of protecting against conception. After consulting a gynecologist, a woman can only choose the most suitable one.

Contraceptives

Oral contraceptives are one of the most popular birth control methods. All of them are divided into 2 groups:

  1. Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) – contain hormones (one of the progestogens and ethinyl estradiol). Their action causes inhibition of ovulation as a result of blocking substances formed in the pituitary gland that regulate the functioning of the reproductive system.
  2. Mini-pill – Progestogen only. These funds are distinguished by local effects on the peripheral zones of the genital organs. Their intake causes morphological and biochemical changes in the endometrium and makes it impossible for a fertilized egg to attach. Representatives of this group: Orgametril, Charozetta.

COCs contain different amounts of active substances. And depending on their content, the products are:

  • microdosed – contain a low level of hormones.
  • Recommended for women under 25 and those who have never used COCs before. Preparations: Zoeli, Dimia;
  • low-dose – prescribed for young and middle-aged women who have already given birth, as well as for those in whom microdose contraceptives cause spotting. They are suitable for women over 40. Representatives of the group: Diana, Jeanine;
  • high-dose – characterized by a high content of female hormones. They are used as part of the complex therapy of certain gynecological pathologies and to restore the hormonal background. These include: Non-ovlon, Triquilar.

It is highly undesirable to choose the drug yourself. This should be done by a gynecologist. The doctor selects a remedy based on a number of factors – the presence of diseases, the individual characteristics of the patient (taking into account body weight, height, the nature of the course of menstruation), examination data.

Patients are usually asked to find the best birth control pills without side effects. Unfortunately, there are no drugs that do not cause any unwanted reactions. They don’t always show up. But a woman should know that the drug can provoke:

  • headache, dizziness;
  • soreness of the chest;
  • nausea;
  • swelling.

It should also be remembered that oral contraceptives should not be used during breastfeeding, diseases of the kidneys, liver and cardiovascular system (CVS), oncology.

If there are contraindications, other contraceptives are selected.

Contraceptive suppositories

having sex regularly. Their action is short-lived, so suppositories are used before each intimacy. Also, candles are administered for safety net in case of violation of the intake of contraceptive pills.

An important advantage of contraceptive suppositories is the absence of hormones. They contain benzalkonium chloride or nonoxynol. These substances destroy sperm and thus prevent fertilization.

The drugs do not have a negative effect on the reproductive system and do not cause serious complications. Their components do not penetrate into the blood and milk. Therefore, they can be used by nursing mothers. An additional effect of drugs with benzalkonium is protection against genital infections.

The disadvantage of this type of contraception is the lack of reliability. According to research, it is about 96%. For comparison, condoms are effective in 98% of cases.

The best representatives of the group include Pharmatex, Gynecotex, Patentex Oval N.

How do contraceptive pills work?

Preparations in this group do not contain hormones. Their active ingredient is mifepristone, a synthetic substance. Its contraceptive action lies in the ability to inhibit ovulation and at the same time prevent the movement of sperm.

This prevents fertilization of the egg. Additionally, the substance stimulates the contraction of the myometrium.

Pharmacies offer:

  • Genale;
  • Gynestril;
  • Ginepristone

How to take birth control pills?

Mifepristone products are emergency contraceptives. They can be used within 3 days after the act. The sooner you take the pill, the more effective it will be.

Funds are used if:

  • oral contraceptive intake was disturbed;
  • failed barrier methods of protection;
  • incorrectly calculated the day of ovulation;
  • no protective measures were used.

The use of drugs may be accompanied by undesirable reactions: dizziness, headache, bloody discharge. They are not used during lactation, with liver and kidney failure, in old age.

Do not use monthly, frequent use can be harmful to health.

If a woman cannot take contraceptives for some reason, a man should take care of preventing an unwanted pregnancy.

Contraceptive pills for men which are better

The choice of contraceptive methods for the stronger sex is not so small. Not everyone likes condoms and not everyone is allowed to have a sterilization operation. But today in pharmacies there are many funds for men that reliably protect against conception.

Hormonal contraceptives are used for this purpose. They contain large doses of antiandrogens and androgens. Once in the male body, the tablets cause a decrease in the number of spermatozoa in the seminal fluid, up to their complete absence. Fertility after discontinuation of the drug is restored. The most famous drug in this group is Cyproterone-Teva.

Hormonal drugs have side effects (weight gain, decreased sex drive, acne) and should not be given to men with cardiovascular (CV) and endocrine disorders.

Use any of the drugs after consulting your doctor. The specialist will select a reliable contraceptive that will not harm your health.

How to get pregnant quickly after stopping birth control?

Most women who use oral contraceptives at some time in their lives often plan to become pregnant in the future after taking birth control pills. The instructions for such drugs usually write that conception can occur in the next cycle after the abolition of oral contraceptives. However, you need to understand that this is not always the case. Much depends on the age of the woman, the characteristics of her body, the specific drug and its dosages.
