Don’t be scared by all these reviews. Happy people don’t write reviews lol. I have been taking this for 3 months with the biggest issue being breakthrough bleeding/spotting. It’s tolerable and otherwise side effects have been OK. I gained maybe two pounds and I think it was all in my boobs.

At first, I loved this form of birth control, I was actually loosing weight. Small break through bleeding, no acne, no cramping, great libido, everything was fine for me. Well I ran out of the 5 samples I received from my doctor and I recently switched to the generic form of lo-loestrin due to insurance and costs. I have PCOS and other complications but this birth control has actually made me lose weight. Quickly at that. Less acne as well. Ive been a bit moody but its hard to say if thats from the bc. My period dragged out a little longer but significantly less bleeding and less painful. Overall great compared to others Ive used.

I’m starting off by saying that our bodies are different. What works for one may not work for you and there is only one way to find it… by trying it yourself. Do not take every review to heart because your experience could be different. Now, when I first started taking loestrin fe 1/20, I was 17 and was on it for a few years. The only problem I had long effect was back acne and it was cystic. It would only flare up around the time I had a period. You must remember, the first two to three months of starting birth control can be rough before your body gets used to it. You’ll have break through bleeding, acne, etc. Now I hopped off of BC for some time and ended up having my daughter and was then put on Junel which is similar to Loestrin. Won’t go on about that bc we are reviewing loestrin here. Fast forward to being off loestein for about 4 years, I just now started it again. Im going on 4 months and had break through bleeding within the first three months. The Third month was only a day of bleeding. Mind you I’m also skipping my periods with this birth control. This time around, I’m not dealing with any acne like I did before. Bodies change as we grow so this may be why, who knows! My mood is fine, however. It prevents pregnancy great and I’m happy to use it. I do want to mention I never seen this pill cause weight gain. I’ve been on Lo Loestrin Fe since I was 17 (I’m 24 now) & the only time I’ve ever had problems with it was when I first started taking it. I had a pretty painful heavy flow a few weeks after starting it. But now it’s great, my periods are so light I don’t even have to wear tampons on my period anymore. & I only get painful period cramps a few times out of the year!

I wanted to start on birth control for the first time and my doctor recommend to start on a low dosage. I started this medication a week ago and had to stop immediately. My sex drive was low, I was having extreme anxiety and headaches that wouldn’t let me fall asleep. I’m just got off the pill as of 2 days ago and I’m still having these massive headaches, fatigue and dizziness. Hopefully I get well soon.

Like many, I was hesitant about starting Lo Loestrin Fe, in part due to the negative reviews online. I started it for birth control purposes only and I am happy to report a positive experience thus far, with no negative side effects. My boobs are slightly fuller (I didn’t change cup size though) and I remember my dreams most nights now. My mood and energy levels are consistent with what they are like off birth control (no issues). My advice is to make decisions based on what is best for you. This pill completely stopped my periods which is a plus, however it came with a lot of down falls I didn’t figure out until I narrowed it down to this being the only change that has happened. I have gotten extremely ill every month for the past 3 months out of the 9 months I’ve been on it. Illnesses varying from RANDOM uncontrollable panic attacks that last anywhere from 20 minutes to 6 hours (hospitalization from fainting due to a heart rate of 127 for 6 hours) even Xanax prescription wouldnt work; I’ve been getting UTI’s every other week, one lasted so long despite antibiotics it turned into a kidney infection; I have close to no libido, which is a downfall on my relationship.
If you have ANY major stressors that have happened or is in progress ie college or clinical study… avoid this pill as much as possible. Read More Read Less

I have taken birth control for 10 year via the pill. After having a baby recently my OB put me on LoLo which I had never taken before. I found I had a lot of bleeding. Full blown periods every other week. I had migraines and mood swings with my periods. No cramping. After 3 months I am switching as I have low iron from bleeding so much and am miserable.

Coming up on 10 years on Lo Loestrin Fe, and it has worked so well for me. When I started out, I really didn’t have any major side effects. It has prevented pregnancy for me during the entire time I’ve taken it. I actually don’t have periods at all now, except maybe some spotting a couple times a year. I’ve discussed this with my doctors, and have been reassured that this is normal and won’t affect my fertility. I would recommend and advocate for this oral contraceptive option!

I’ve been on this for 8 months now. I was on minestrin previously, but they discontinued it. I need a low estrogen pill as previous BC with higher levels would give me migraines.
I haven’t experienced weight gain, or wild emotions (I’m already on anti depressants so that may be why).. I have THE WORST acne on my chin and jaw line. I’m 32 and have a good skin care regimen. I’ve never experienced it this bad, even as a teenager. It finally came to me that it must be from this BC. I’m extremely self conscious now because of it. I’ve been on this pill since 2016, when I met my now husband. It’s honestly been the best experience and I’ve had zero issues. I lost and kept off a good 5-10 pounds since I started it (though some of that was probably consciously) and also have had clearer skin (again, some of it was likely me discovering clean beauty..) but all in all no complaints. Then in July of 2022, 3 months ago, I got my next 3-pack and noticed the pills looked different – the blue is slightly brighter. I did not receive a generic though, it’s still packaged as lo lo esterin- but now I’m constantly cramping, my bloating is so uncomfortable, and my mood swings and emotions are on highhhh alert. i have had HORRIBLE experiences with birth control. i started taking pills and then they eventually gave me a disease on my legs called erythema nodosum. after that i got the nexplanon and was an emotional wreck and gained 40+ lbs that i could not lose until i got it removed. my body creates too much estrogen as it is so i’m shocked to have such a positive review. i’m losing weight, my breasts are bigger, and i have the easiest periods of my life. i have a few negative side effects like acne and spotting but they are manageable. this pill changed how i view birth control and i could not recommend it more!Read More Read Less

So miserable! I was on mili when my doctor decided to switch me to this new birth control lo loestrin fe. I started off just feeling so depressed and worthless. Then I started to cry over every little thing and I would get so angry I did not feel like myself at all. Got nauseous and raging headaches all the time and medicine didn’t help. I have been on Lo Loestrin Fe for a couple of months and so far I have not had any problems. My previous form of birth control was Nexoplanon. Most of the reviews on that form were positive but my experience was terrible. I had a period for just shy of three years and my pms symptoms were always very strong. With Lo Loestrin Fe I finally have been having a normal cycle and my pms symptoms are only around when my period comes. However, my breasts have been tender ever since I started.

I was on this for almost 2 years and here’s my full experience:
PROS:
-completely got rid of my acne, even after being off of it for 9 months now
-no weight gain at all
-no mood swings, pretty stable
-no period at all
CONS
– heightened my anxiety the longer I took it. The first 3 months were smooth sailing but after that it started affecting my anxiety incrementally. I didnt realize it might be the pill worsening my anxiety until 1.5 years in since I didnt have any other side effects. Now that I am off of it, I am more clear minded and level headed. Anxiety is still there but nothing compared to when I was on LoLo. I feel like myself again.

I’ve been on birth control since I was a junior in high school. Was initially on the pill to help the intensity of my periods, as they were always 8 days with heavy bleeding and intense, debilitating cramping. I cannot remember the birth control I was on before college, but switched to Lo Loestrin my first year in college and have been on it ever since. I’ve never had a problem with this birth control (at least none that I’m aware of). I never felt depressed or anxious because of the pill, though I did often have negative feelings but that’s more so due to the recent life events when I started the pill, not the pill itself. Ever since being on Lo Loestrin, I haven’t had a period. Asked my gyno if this was normal and she said yes & haven’t worried about it since. I had problems with acne as a teen but my acne improved and have almost no acne most of the time and I’ve been on the pill for years. Honestly, some people probably react differently to different pills so I’d recommend trying it and if it’s not for you, then stop taking it. This was my first birth control and I was on it for a little over 3 years until it got crazy expensive (went from $25/3 packs to $118/3 packs to $430/3 packs). I realized after a while that if I took it a couple hours late, it would make me feel more anxious. The only other side effect was that I never had my period on this pill – I know that some people like that and others do not, so it’s worth mentioning.

The doctor selects a remedy based on a number of factors – the presence of diseases, the individual characteristics of the patient (taking into account body weight, height, the nature of the course of menstruation), examination data.

If an unwanted pregnancy occurs, oral contraceptives (OCs) should be discontinued. Not all, but some drugs can have a negative effect on the fetus from the first days of life.

Types of OCs and their mechanism of action

Combined oral contraceptives (COCs)

They are called combined due to the fact that they contain 2 types of hormones at once – progestin (progesterone) and estrogen (both are female sex hormones, but perform different functions) ³ .

Not everyone knows, but when taken correctly, COCs are considered a more reliable means of contraception than a condom. True, unlike the latter, oral contraceptives do not protect against genital infections.

The main task of progestin is to suppress the functions of the pituitary gland (a piece of the brain responsible for the production of hormones), which leads to a stop in ovulation. As a result, the follicles (in which eggs develop) do not grow, and the body does not produce enough estrogen, which is necessary for the female body. That is why the preparations contain estrogen, which is an auxiliary agent, normalizes the menstruation cycle and other important processes in the body ⁴ .

• changes in the structure of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) to prevent the egg from being fixed;
• thickening of cervical mucus, which creates a barrier to spermatozoa and reduces their activity;
• control of the menstrual cycle, thanks to the COC, you can regulate the arrival of menstruation;
• treatment and prevention of many diseases associated with menstrual irregularities.

It is worth clarifying that oral contraceptives are precisely contraceptives. The main task always remains the prevention of unwanted pregnancy, and not the treatment of various hormonal diseases. For this, there are many specialized drugs.

A doctor may prescribe a COC as a drug, but only in a supportive or prophylactic role. It is strictly not recommended to purchase COCs for the treatment of certain diseases on your own, without the consent of a doctor.

Minipill

They are considered analogous to COCs, but contain only mini-doses of progestin, without estrogen, for which they got their original name. There is another entertaining name for such drugs – pure progestin oral contraceptives or abbreviated POC.

Among the general criteria, doctors may look for the following signs:

• if there is excessive hair growth on the body;
• whether there are signs of androgen excess;

How oral contraceptives are taken

To achieve the effect already in the current month, OK can be used from the first day of the next menstrual cycle. If it was decided to start taking later (from the second to the sixth day of the cycle), then contraceptive pills are combined for another 1-2 weeks with other methods of contraception (condoms). After the 6th day of the cycle, it is no longer possible to wait for a quick result – it is necessary to continue to be protected for a month, since the result of a contraceptive pill in a woman will not be guaranteed in the current cycle, and she may become pregnant.

To achieve a stable and high-quality effect, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the schedule of administration described in the specific instructions for the drug.

The duration of administration depends on the number of tablets in the blister. Preparations of 28 pieces per pack should be taken daily, without interruption. When the blister contains 21 pieces, the drug must be taken for 21 days in a row, and then wait 7 days and start a new package.

An important point: if the rules for taking OK are violated and menstruation does not occur after 7 days (provided that the intake starts from the 1st day of the cycle), it is necessary to endure the break and make sure that pregnancy has not occurred.
