The method of dermatoscopy is simple and affordable, but at the same time very informative. Examination of moles by a doctor with a dermatoscope significantly increases the chance of detecting malignant skin tumors, primarily melanoma.

Biopsy and histology

During a biopsy, the doctor collects tissue for subsequent histological diagnosis. The procedure should be carried out in a dressing room or operating room with the observance of the rules of asepsis and antisepsis.

Possible types of mole biopsy:

• Excisional, in which the skin formation is completely excised within healthy skin and soft tissues.
• Incisional, during which part of the mole is removed from the middle with the capture of intact tissue.
• Curette – the material is obtained using a curette in the form of a spoon or ring.
• Puncture – is carried out using a special tubular knife, which allows you to get a column of tissue from the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous fat layer for research.

Histological examination involves the study of the obtained material under a microscope after its fixation, paraffin blocking and staining.

A histological examination of a mole is carried out, on average, 7-10 days. However, if a doctor suspects the presence of melanoma, an urgent examination can be carried out using an accelerated method within a few hours. It is less accurate, so the final diagnosis is made later.
