Our Approach to MS Treatment

We believe in a team approach. In addition to providing a comprehensive neurological evaluation and interpretation of MRI studies, we involve nursing, physical therapy and social work assessments as needed. This coordinated, comprehensive, multi-specialty approach helps us provide an accurate diagnosis, quality patient care and an effective treatment plan to help you manage MS long term.

  • Years of studying retinal scans, brain MRIs and clinical characteristics from people with MS have allowed us to develop a system of personalized assessment and monitoring of MS that helps us anticipate and prepare for changes in your condition. Our evaluation and testing methods include:

    • Innovative diagnostic tests that help us precisely identify your type of MS
    • Imaging tests
    • Lifestyle assessments
    • Reviews of your medical history
    • Ongoing genetic and blood tests

  • A simple imaging test of your retina – the light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye – allows us to identify the likelihood of rapid disease progression. The test, called optical coherence tomography (OCT) may also help determine your best course of treatment.

Ongoing genetic and blood tests may also help predict who is at risk for future disability. By partnering with our team, the knowledge gained from your case helps provide even better treatment for future patients.

  • As leaders in both patient care and biomedical discovery, we provide the highest level of research-based, personalized care. Our team will create a personalized MS treatment plan that may include:

    • Managing MS flare-ups and accelerating recovery with the help of steroids and other medications.
    • Reducing the frequency and severity of MS flare-ups and treating worsening MS with beta interferon, glatiramer acetate and other FDA-approved drugs and therapies.
    • Managing the variety of physical MS symptoms and mental health implications with medications, physical and occupational therapy, rehabilitation psychology, and working closely with specialists in other fields.

Multiple Sclerosis | University of Miami Health System

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects your central nervous system – the brain, spine and optic nerves. When you have MS, your body’s immune system attacks nerve fibers, which are similar to electrical wiring. When this wiring is damaged, your brain cannot properly deliver messages to the rest of your body. Therefore, the disease can affect your entire body, from memory issues and fatigue to the ability to walk or see.

The disease varies in its severity; the mild cases sometimes go undetected while more severe MS may reduce longevity. There are four general “disease courses” that many patients go through. Knowing which course or type of MS you have can help you receive the right type of care.

  1. Relapsing-Remitting – you experience spans of time where symptoms may be light or you may not experience symptoms at all. Later, you may get “flare-ups” or strong symptoms for a span of time lasting from days to weeks.
  2. Secondary-Progressive – your symptoms get progressively worse without any periods of remission.
  3. Primary-Progressive – you do not have any distinct periods of remission.
  4. Progressive-Relapsing – you may progressively get worse, but also has periods of time when your symptoms suddenly worsen.

The causes of MS are not yet known but scientists theorize that it is the result of a virus or autoimmune condition in which the body becomes allergic to itself.

Tests

The neurologists at the UHealth Department of Neurology Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence are experts in the field of MS and can help you to reach a diagnosis quickly and accurately.

MRI
The purpose of an MRI is to look at images for evidence of damage in the brain or spinal cord, such as a lesion (or white spot) on the brain.

Lumbar Puncture
This is a diagnostic study to test the cerebrospinal fluid to help diagnose certain health conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis.
While people with cystic fibrosis initially make some – but not enough – insulin, by the time they are adults, more than half of the patients have cystic fibrosis-related diabetes. Blood glucose and other tests can help diagnose this type of diabetes.

Laboratory Testing
The purpose of specific laboratory tests is to rule out conditions that mimic Multiple Sclerosis.

Treatments

Modifying Therapies
Disease modifying therapies are just that – therapies that change the course of your MS and slow the progression of the disease. There are more than 10 different therapies available today and that number is growing. These medicines may be pills, shots or even intravenous (IV) infusions, each with their own benefits and side effects.

Symptomatic Treatments
Symptomatic treatments address the actual symptoms associated with MS. This is a disease that can affect your entire body and different symptoms may come and go. Our medical team can customize your treatment plan to address your unique symptoms. A physical therapist can help you with exercises or stretching that will increase your movement or decrease your pain. A urologist can help prescribe medication for bowel incontinency. A neuropsychologist can help with fatigue or depression issues.
