Plumped up lips. 11 Effective Ways to Plump Your Lips: From DIY to Professional Treatments
How can you achieve fuller lips naturally. What are the most effective lip plumping treatments. Which DIY methods actually work for lip enhancement. Are professional lip plumping procedures worth considering. What ingredients should you look for in lip plumping products.
Understanding the Science Behind Lip Plumping
Lip plumping has become increasingly popular in recent years as many seek to achieve a fuller, more voluminous pout. But what exactly causes lips to appear plumper? The science behind lip plumping typically involves stimulating blood flow to the lips, which causes temporary swelling and a fuller appearance. This can be achieved through various methods, from topical products to professional treatments.
Most lip plumping products work by irritating the lips slightly, causing them to swell. Common ingredients that create this effect include capsaicin (from chili peppers), cinnamon, and menthol. These ingredients cause a mild inflammatory response, increasing blood flow to the lips and creating a temporary plumping effect.
Other lip plumping methods focus on hydration. Well-hydrated lips naturally appear fuller and smoother. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin help draw moisture to the lips, creating a plumping effect without irritation.
DIY Lip Plumping Techniques: Do They Really Work?
Many people turn to DIY methods for lip plumping, seeking affordable and natural solutions. But do these home remedies actually work? Let’s explore some popular DIY techniques:
- Cinnamon oil: Mixing a drop of cinnamon oil with a lip balm can create a temporary plumping effect due to its mild irritant properties.
- Peppermint oil: Similar to cinnamon, peppermint oil can stimulate blood flow to the lips.
- Sugar scrub: Exfoliating the lips with a gentle sugar scrub can improve circulation and create a smoother, fuller appearance.
- Ice cube technique: Applying an ice cube to the lips for a few seconds can cause temporary swelling and redness.
While these DIY methods may provide a subtle, short-term effect, they generally don’t offer dramatic or long-lasting results. It’s also important to use caution with any DIY technique to avoid irritation or allergic reactions.
Over-the-Counter Lip Plumping Products: What to Look For
The beauty market offers a wide range of over-the-counter lip plumping products. When choosing a lip plumper, what ingredients should you look for? Here are some key components that can contribute to a fuller lip appearance:
- Hyaluronic acid: This powerful humectant draws moisture to the lips, creating a plumping effect.
- Peptides: These amino acid chains can help stimulate collagen production, potentially leading to fuller lips over time.
- Vitamin E: This antioxidant helps nourish and protect the lips while promoting a smoother appearance.
- Collagen: While topical collagen can’t penetrate deeply, it can help hydrate and smooth the lip surface.
- Marine collagen: Derived from fish, this ingredient is believed to help boost natural collagen production.
When selecting a lip plumping product, it’s essential to consider your skin type and any sensitivities. Some people may find certain plumping ingredients too irritating, while others may prefer a more intense sensation for noticeable results.
Professional Lip Plumping Treatments: Weighing the Pros and Cons
For those seeking more dramatic and long-lasting results, professional lip plumping treatments are an option. These treatments typically involve injecting dermal fillers into the lips to add volume and shape. The most common type of filler used for lip enhancement is hyaluronic acid.
Pros of professional lip plumping treatments:
- Immediate and noticeable results
- Customizable to achieve desired shape and volume
- Can last several months to a year
- Performed by trained professionals
Cons of professional lip plumping treatments:
- Higher cost compared to over-the-counter options
- Potential for side effects such as bruising, swelling, or asymmetry
- Risk of allergic reactions or complications
- Requires maintenance treatments to maintain results
Before considering professional lip plumping treatments, it’s crucial to consult with a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to discuss your goals, potential risks, and expected outcomes.
Natural Ways to Enhance Lip Volume Without Products
While products and treatments can provide noticeable results, there are also natural ways to enhance the appearance of your lips without using any products. These methods focus on improving overall lip health and creating the illusion of fuller lips:
Lip Exercises
Some people believe that regularly exercising the muscles around the mouth can help improve lip volume and shape. While scientific evidence is limited, these exercises are harmless and may help tone the area:
- Whistling: Practice whistling for a few minutes each day to work the lip muscles.
- Lip pulls: Gently pull your lower lip down and hold for 10 seconds, then repeat with the upper lip.
- Kiss face: Pucker your lips as if you’re about to kiss someone, hold for 5 seconds, then relax.
Hydration and Nutrition
Staying well-hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can significantly impact the appearance of your lips. Drinking plenty of water helps keep your lips plump and moisturized from the inside out. Additionally, consuming foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E can support collagen production and overall skin health.
Lip Massage
Gently massaging your lips can help stimulate blood flow and potentially create a temporary plumping effect. Use clean fingers or a soft toothbrush to massage your lips in circular motions for a few minutes each day.
The Role of Makeup in Creating the Illusion of Fuller Lips
Makeup techniques can be incredibly effective in creating the appearance of fuller lips without any plumping products or treatments. Here are some expert tips for using makeup to enhance your lip volume:
- Lip liner: Use a lip liner slightly darker than your natural lip color to outline just outside your natural lip line. This creates the illusion of larger lips.
- Ombre effect: Apply a darker shade of lipstick or gloss to the outer corners of your lips, blending towards a lighter shade in the center. This creates depth and dimension.
- Highlighting: Use a small amount of highlighter on your cupid’s bow and in the center of your bottom lip to catch the light and create a fuller appearance.
- Glossy finish: Applying a clear or shimmery gloss to the center of your lips can make them appear plumper and more voluminous.
- Contouring: Lightly contour just below your bottom lip and above your upper lip to create shadows that emphasize lip volume.
Remember, practice makes perfect when it comes to these makeup techniques. Experiment with different products and methods to find what works best for your unique lip shape and desired look.
Understanding the Risks and Side Effects of Lip Plumping
While many lip plumping methods are generally safe, it’s important to be aware of potential risks and side effects. These can vary depending on the type of product or treatment used:
Over-the-Counter Products
Common side effects of topical lip plumpers may include:
- Tingling or burning sensation
- Redness or swelling
- Dryness or peeling
- Allergic reactions (in rare cases)
To minimize risks, always patch test new products and discontinue use if you experience any severe or prolonged discomfort.
Professional Treatments
Risks associated with dermal filler injections can include:
- Bruising and swelling
- Infection
- Asymmetry or lumps
- Allergic reactions
- Vascular occlusion (rare but serious)
It’s crucial to choose a qualified, experienced practitioner for any professional lip plumping treatments to minimize these risks.
Long-Term Strategies for Maintaining Fuller Lips
While many lip plumping methods offer temporary results, there are strategies you can employ for long-term lip health and fullness:
Sun Protection
Protecting your lips from sun damage is crucial for maintaining their health and appearance. Use a lip balm with SPF daily to prevent collagen breakdown and maintain lip volume.
Regular Exfoliation
Gently exfoliating your lips once or twice a week can help remove dead skin cells, improve circulation, and create a smoother, fuller appearance. Use a gentle lip scrub or a soft toothbrush for this purpose.
Consistent Hydration
Keeping your lips well-hydrated is key to maintaining their fullness. Use a high-quality lip balm or treatment regularly, especially before bed and in dry environments.
Collagen-Boosting Skincare
Incorporate skincare products with collagen-boosting ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and peptides into your routine. While these won’t directly plump your lips, they can help improve overall skin quality and potentially enhance lip appearance over time.
Healthy Lifestyle Habits
Maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, avoiding smoking, and managing stress can all contribute to better skin and lip health in the long run.
By combining these long-term strategies with short-term plumping techniques, you can work towards achieving and maintaining fuller, healthier-looking lips.
Comparing Cost and Effectiveness of Different Lip Plumping Methods
When considering lip plumping options, it’s important to weigh the cost against the effectiveness and longevity of results. Here’s a breakdown of various methods:
DIY Methods
Cost: Low (typically using household ingredients)
Effectiveness: Minimal to moderate, very short-term results
Longevity: Minutes to hours
Over-the-Counter Products
Cost: Low to moderate ($10-$50 per product)
Effectiveness: Mild to moderate, depending on the product
Longevity: Several hours to a day
Professional Treatments (Dermal Fillers)
Cost: High ($500-$2000 per treatment)
Effectiveness: High, with noticeable results
Longevity: 6-12 months on average
When deciding which method is right for you, consider your budget, desired results, and willingness to undergo more invasive procedures. For some, a combination of approaches might provide the best balance of cost and effectiveness.
Remember that results can vary significantly from person to person, and what works well for one individual may not be as effective for another. It’s often worth experimenting with different methods to find what works best for your unique lips and preferences.

It’s a Plumper
This is such an underrated gem @ Ulta! Everybody goes crazy for Too Faced but this is just as efficient & at a fraction of the cost especially when you can get em on sale for $6 each. I don’t understand folks complaining about “the burn” . Do you think your lips will expand in size from something non irritating? Sure you can get your lip lines Smoother & a more moisturized pout but then your looking for a lip BALM not a plumper! This burns like pepper & lasts quite a bit but the outcome is super sexy! I’ve purchased the shades cotton candy which is one of the only cool tone Pinks I’ve ever found & the sheer Sparkly pink one, forgot the name (they don’t say names on them). I hope they come out with more colors & sheer ones. If you want a less abrasive Plumper try buxom, to me it don’t burn as bad. I also noticed as with anything the more you apply the more ur lips get used to it & it won’t burn as bad. too faced used to kill me & now I’m not even phased by em.
There’s a difference between tingling & burning…
I know some lip plumpers give you a tingling feeling as they work…but this wasn’t that. It plain burns. I was at my hallway mirror, about to leave the house…doing my usually spiel of adding gloss before I walk out the door…..applied this & was feeling cute for a few seconds before my lips started having this stinging burn felling. It was concerning enough to make me walk to my kitchen to rinse my lips off. The last thing I need is a chemical burn on my lips. Even after removing the clear gloss it still burned for another few minutes.
I don’t normally leave reviews, and I’m not someone who likes going back to the store to return things, but I will certainly be getting my money back and side eyeing this clear gloss from now on.

I am always looking for an effective lip plumper & they’re very hard to find BUT Ulta has made an afforable one! And yes it burns burns but for me, I like it because that’s how I know it’s working! The ratings should be way higher. I will say you will obviously have to reapply it often but that’s with any gloss.
I would NOT buy this product again .

Does it burn Oh Yeh it sure does.
I couldn’t wait to try it I usually get Buxton but said I’ll give Ulta’s own brand a try .
It’s on my lips over a half hour now I love the color I also got Ultas lip liner to go with it .It’s Burning now since application will have to wash off which is shameful as I was sure this brand would beat its outside competitors . Burn Burn Burning just too much , sorry I can’t handle it

Pros: It does have a tingle to it – its a plumping lip gloss… it’s supposed to! Price- cant beat it. Great colors.
Cons: It is sticky- hair gets stuck in it but that’s most glosses. I dont notice actual plumping of my lips.

From organic home remedies to makeup solutions and treatments by a dermatologist, several options can help you get the perfect, plump pout.
Why are suddenly so many people looking to increase the size and smoothness of their lips? It’s not just because of Kylie Jenner and Instagram models — in fact, science has a theory that goes way further back than that.
The desire for plump lips isn’t just about thickness, it’s about hydration, health, and smoothness.
A 2009 study showed that women with bigger, fuller lips appear younger than their biological age. This study also showed that the fewer wrinkles a person had, the healthier (and therefore more hydrated) they appeared to others.
So in a world of chasing wellness, it’s not surprising that achieving full lips has become the latest aesthetic trend.
The good news is that just as trends are temporary, so are our options. If you’re unsure about longer-lasting solutions or just want to have some fun, then you’re in luck. Check our hand guide for a variety of options.
If makeup doesn’t do the trick, you can start with this natural and tingly lip plumper — using only a few ingredients found in your kitchen.
Directions:
- Mix a few sprinkles of cayenne pepper with a tablespoon
of olive oil. - Gently place the mixture on your lips and leave on for
a few minutes before wiping it off completely and moisturizing with your
favorite lip balm.
Though these results won’t last long, this is a great solution to snap a quick selfie or for a night out.
For people who are more sensitive, a simple sugar scrub can also smooth out chapped lips and get them blushing.
If you want fuller-looking lips, but don’t want to actually physically change your lips, then Kylie Jenner created her Kylie Lip Kits just for you.
Directions:
- Using the lip liner, gently line right outside your
natural lip shape and then fill in your entire lips. - Place the matte liquid lipstick on top of the liner and
finish off with a clear gloss in the middle of your bottom lip for the
appearance of fuller-looking lips.
Though this will work with any color, for the most natural look aim for a color close to your natural lip color.

Tried all this and know you want something that lasts longer? Lip injections may be your answer.
Though lip implants and other types of fillers exist, Dr. David Shafer of Shafer Plastic Surgery recommends hyaluronic acid lip fillers above all others in terms of safety and ease.
The most common of the hyaluronic acid injectables are Juvederm and Restylane, because the effects are reversible.
Dr. Shafer, who injects between 20 to 30 patients a week, explains, “The hyaluronic acid fillers are [preferable] compared to other types of fillers since they can be ‘melted’ if there is an issue or if the patient doesn’t like the results. Other fillers can’t be easily removed.”

One of the most popular lip makeup techniques is ombre, when two shades of lipstick are used at once in one range. Darker is applied to the outer corners of the lips, lighter – in the center. The effect of additional volume is achieved through the transition of colors and the play of light and shadow.
The secrets of preparing a remedy that will come in handy at any time of the year.
How to do ombre lip makeup
1
To visually enlarge the upper lip, paint over its upper border with a dry highlighter or light shimmering shadows, going beyond the natural contour. A light highlight will give the impression of a slightly protruding upper lip.
Underline the lower contour with a light brown pencil slightly darker than the color of the skin to create a natural shadow effect. Thus, the lower lip will also become visually plumper.

Dark lipstick paint over the corners of the lips, leaving the center free. Slightly blend the borders of the lipstick in the central part with a cotton swab.

3
Apply a lighter shade of lipstick to the center of the lips. To paint over the lips, use an artificial brush. Use it to carefully draw the outline without resorting to a pencil.

How to contour your lips
For a casual look, use lip gloss and a light brown liner slightly darker than your skin tone.
1
Draw a contour with a brown lip pencil. Duplicate natural, going beyond the boundaries of a maximum of half a millimeter, so that the makeup does not look vulgar.

2
With the same pencil, draw lines on the lips themselves: highlight the center of the upper lip, and also draw three vertical lines on the bottom. Slightly blend the inner edges of the pencil along the outline with a cotton swab.

Apply a sheer nude, slightly peach or pink gloss to your lips.

If desired, add a little brown color to the corners of the lips or along the contour with a pencil.

The effect of visual lip enlargement is visible to the naked eye! But do not overdo it: try not to go too far beyond the boundaries of the natural contour and do not use an overly dark pencil.

How to choose cosmetics to create the effect of plump lips?

Choice of color
To visually enlarge the lips, we advise you to abandon dark lipsticks that “eat up” volume. Nude lipsticks are the perfect assistants in creating plump lips.
- These can be as neutral as possible: a couple of tones darker than your skin; repeating the color of your lips; slightly more pink lipstick. The main thing is that such shades are as natural as possible.
- When choosing lipstick, do not forget to focus on your color type (cold or warm), and do not forget about a pencil to match the lipstick.
- The obvious advantages of nude lipstick are that it is more “wearable” and comfortable, does not require flawless application, and is easy to renew even without a mirror.

Matching textures
When choosing a lipstick finish, choose comfortable cream textures, lacquer lipsticks or lip glosses. Such products visually increase the lips, creating additional volume due to shine.
- Matte lipsticks, especially liquid lipsticks, dry out lips and make them look smaller.
- Liquid lipstick leaves a precise contour that emphasizes the natural borders of your lips.

Plumper lips: little secrets
The following tricks will help you to plump up your lips without painful and expensive injections.
© Makeup.ru
Your favorite lip balm or oil can serve as a lip base. Be sure to apply the base 5-7 minutes before using subsequent products.
- Take a closer look at balms with mint or cinnamon oils, they improve microcirculation – blood rushes to the lips and makes them brighter and more voluminous. If you can’t find a product with these ingredients, use pure peppermint oil. You can mix it with any base oil.
2
Scrub
Get into the habit of using a lip scrub. Lips need exfoliation just like your face, so use a dedicated exfoliant at least once or twice a week.
- If you haven’t bought a scrub yet, a toothbrush will do. Gently massage into moistened lips to remove any dead skin. On cleansed and nourished lips, any lipstick will fall much better.
3
Concealer
© Makeup.ru
Even in lip makeup, concealer or foundation can be useful. Apply a thin layer of concealer to lips with a sponge or brush.
- Firstly, the concealer will cover your natural lip contour, and you can adjust it slightly.
- Secondly, such a “base” will provide a more even and durable coating of lipstick.
4
Lip Pencil
For those who want to visually enlarge their lips, it is necessary to choose a pencil that is one tone or a couple of shades darker than the natural shade of the lips. You will need a pencil not only for stroking, but also for filling the lips with this color.
For more detailed instructions on how to create plump lips with a pencil, see the video of beauty blogger Alina Fly Cloud.
5
Bronzer
Yes, bronzer can be used for more than just a natural tan. Run the bronzer in a thin strip under the lower lip, creating a shadow that supposedly falls from a plump lip.
6
Highlighter
© Makeup.ru
Highlighter can also be useful in creating the effect of plump lips. Apply your favorite shimmery product to the check mark above your upper lip, and the light-reflecting particles in it will make your lips look that much bigger.
7
Lip gloss
Lip gloss Ecstasy Lacquer, 600, Adrenaline, Giorgio Armani © Makeup.ru
When was the last time you used a glitter gloss? If for a long time, then in vain! It is gloss with a large amount of shimmer that gives the lips maximum volume. In addition, sequins are back in fashion, so feel free to buy a forgotten product.
8
Smiles and kisses
Facial muscle training will help to achieve a slight increase in lips. Don’t worry, these are pleasant exercises that are easy to do every day. Smiles and kisses (even air kisses) will help not only give extra volume to the lips, but also cheer you up.
