I have to tell you I was afraid of this medicine after I read all the aboves stories but I am here to tell you that I do not have any of those systems. I have been on it for two weeks and am taking 20MG a day. Please don’t be afraid it works different for all. Good Luck.

When I get a rheumatoid arthritis flare, this is the only thing that helps. I’m thankful I don’t get too many flares but I am so happy that I can take this prednisone.

I was diagnosed with bronchitis. Severe wheezing. I was started on 3 days 60mg prednisone with a taper after the 3 days. I made it 2 days barely. I suffered with severe side effects. All were mental health related I believe. Severe anxiety with significant tightening of chest, panic feeling. Sweating, irritable, agitated, fearful, tremulous, racing thoughts. I am a very level headed person and I truly believed I was having a mental health crisis. I was told to stop. I did. Only 2 days at 60 caused this. I am now 48 hours without any. I am still not myself. A bit better and hopefully on mend. This was and still is very scary. I was unable to work for 3 days so far due to the reaction. I am sharing my experience not to scare people but to offer hope! If you have similar symptoms you are not loosing your mind! It could be side effects that will resolve. Just make sure you talk to your doc. I could stop immediately bc only on for 2 days. Read More Read Less

I use a low dose of this drug for both severe asthma exacerbations and vocal chord spasms. I am aware of the long term effects and so far I have been able to tolerate the drug pretty well. I am just sick and tired of doctors treating this drug like an opioid and making it difficult to come by! I pretty much have to order the drug via foreign pharmacy just to have enough in between prescriptions.

I suffered severe edema and rashes that started at my ankles and worked up my legs to my torso on two occasions. Topical steroids were largely or completely ineffective after months of applications that included suppressing my immune system to the point of phenomena. I self prescribed three days of prednisone of 40mg, then 20, and then 20 for three days. The leg edema and red swollen rashes cleared completely. I have taken prednisone on four different occasions for three different health concerns, the first time I took it was to see if my nasal polyps would decrease in size. It helped my nasal polyps, but I didn’t want to take it long-term and I decided to get polyp, and Sinus surgery instead. The second and third time I took prednisone was before and after my sinus surgery and that was to reduce swelling before and after surgery. My fourth time taking prednisone was because I’ve developed bronchitis after having a sinus infection and I was getting asthma and severe coughing Every day multiple times a day and I was resorting to using my inhaler multiple times a day just to be able to breathe when I went to my doctor. He prescribe prednisone as a bronchodilator and it helped tremendously by day two of the five day treatment plan I no longer had a cough, and I could breathe beautifully . I will say side effect wise. It does give me a bit of an upset stomach as well as acid reflux and the first three times that I took it. I took it for two weeks, and I definitely did see an increase in my weight but overall, it’s been a very effective. Read More Read Less

I am writing on behalf of my Mom. Dx w RA at 34 yrs old. Allergic to all conventional treatment medications at that time so was put on long term low dose prednisone for over 40years. Even when in later years when able to take biological was able to reduce prednisone somewhat but not off completely due to other complicating factors for the biological. One side effect for long term usage is it thins the skin severely- like tissue paper. Also found out it does the same thing to the bowel walls. She ended up with multiple bowel obstructions from the bowel contents leach8ng out through the bowel walls and her body trying to confine the infection by setting up a walled off abscess. This would need to be surgically removed. She developed fistulas tracking trom her bowel to the skin surface and into her vagina. Ultimately, with so many bowel obstructions she ended up with an idle ostomy and had only 4 feet of good bowel remaining. The last 10 years of her life were hell and hospital visits and stays. Because she had hardly any bowel to digest her food, she was chronically undernourished, despite eating 6-8 times a day, and she was always hungry. She was chronically dehydrated despite drinking constantly, and it never satiated her never ending thirst. Once she ate or drank, the contents would shoot out of the ostomy undigested to the amount of 8-10 litres every day. Because of the large output the ostomy bag came off repeatedly every day and night. My parents were a slave to having to change the bag regardless off it being day or night! Never mind preparing and feeding her and filling drinks. Both of my parents were always optimistic and persevered with a smile always even though they were severely sleep deprived often. So when you advocate for more doctors to prescribe long term prednisone usage instead of other available medications, like the expensive biologics, be careful what you wish for. In addition to the thin skin and bowel walls, my beautiful mother developed a round swollen ‘moon’ face and the ‘buffalo’ hump on her upper back. Ant still with all those years on the prednisone she still ended up with knarled deformed fingers and still experienced osteoporosis arthritis. Hurrah for the biologics! I only wish they had been available for my Mom 30-40 years ago. She passed from complications with the ostomy 6 months ago and I would do anything to have her been able to experienced a better quality of life than she did using prednisone for soooo long.Read More Read Less

I have COPD, so whenever I get a flair up, I immediately start my Predisone, the first day , I take 20 mg twice a day, the second day, I cut down to 15 mg twice a day, the third day , I cut down to 20 mg twice a day for three days, then decrease dose to 7.5 mg twice a day for 3 days, then decrease to 5 mg twice a day for 3 days, then, decrease to 2,5 mg once a day for 3 days. My doctor has supplied me with as needed prescription, so I do not have to call him for a script all the time.
By slowly decreasing the dose, you’d o not get any bad side effects.
While on the prednisone, I do get slight weight gain, because it makes me so darn hungry, insomnia is also a side effect, but it gives you lots of energy and I feel like a million bucks while I’m on it, takes away all arthritic pain too.
I usually have to take it about 3 times a year, when I have a flair up.
It has kept me out of the ER many times.Read More Read Less

I wish there was more research on Low Dose Prednisone. Most of the bad side effects are from anything over 10mg. I use this for extreme chronic lower back pain and joint flares. I take 5mg/day.
I go off and on since there is so much hype about side effects but I know some older docs who use to put patients on low low dose for years. If your over 65 and in severe pain and a low dose of this keeps you going what’s the trade off? I think that since there is no money in it, research will never show its benefits. They want you to take the expensive Biologics instead. Like they dont have side effects? Have you listened to the commercials? They hardest part is finding the doctors that are amenable to prescribing low dose for long periods. If you find that doctor I hope you will post their name to help all us achey old people. Thank you all for your posts, they are so helpful. Read More Read Less

Rheumatoid arthritis and Type 1 Diabetes: Side effects 20mg 1 month, 50mg 3 weeks: Small amount of weight gain, oral thrush, heartburn (if I don’t drink enough water!)
I have so much more energy I can stay awake longer than two hours at a time. Swelling in most of my body is down and pain is mostly under control. Oral thrush is being controlled with nystatin oral solution. Weight game from actually being able to eat properly because I’m not in so much pain. My face is more round from water retention but considering how I was feeling I’d rather be a bit “puffy in the face” and not my entire body! This is a miracle drug for short term use. Don’t be afraid of the people who don’t understand what it’s like to be sick. Your doctors and medical team are looking out for you! Trust your body and don’t be afraid to contact your medical team OFTEN when on it! I am able to be a human being because of this medication. Sometimes R.A. medications aren’t enough and we need that blast of steroids along side our “recipe” to further your recovery. Be fearless. I believe in you! Hi. I read all the reviews here before taking it for Gout because I was scared. Now I want to share my experience with it. I had untreated gout for like 3 weeks. Left foot was swollen bad. Doctor gave me 20-30mg per day for 7 days. I finally started it after a day of his prescription and I was surprised that in 2-3 days the swelling magically vanished. The only side effect it had was a little tummy ache but nothing an ol bowl of yogurt cant fix. The doctor had also given me a PPI omeprazole before having this med. (before breakfast omeprazole, breakfast, after breakfast prednisolone).
When i stopped it the 7th day the swelling came back the very next day but somehow it was a bit better and my new NSAID course that started immediately (diclofenac) helped the swelling come down in 3-4 days. So my experience with this med was really good, non scary and insignificant side effects. It helped break down the severity of the goit inflammation. Read More Read Less

My Dr prescribed this for my psoriatic arthritis. I had developed severe psoriasis. After 7 days on the medicine at 5mg 2 times a day. I became very irritable. Developed headaches, was dizzy, short of breath, nausea. I would cry over nothing. I have never been a suicidal person but thought several times while taking this medication how easy it would be to put a gun to my head & pull the trigger. I wasn’t upset about anything but would think that I could do it without even having a reason & how easy it would be to just do it & not even think about it. I slept for 2 days, didn’t eat for 2 days, even though I was told it would increase my appetite. I stopped the medicine & the first day off of it I felt the same still had the side effects. Was wondering how long it would take to get out of my system. I know all meds effect everyone different but I will never take this one again & think more warnings should be put out about it. I’m sure it helps some but my side effects were much worse than the benefits. I have seen nothing in the way of improvements for my conditions that it was prescribed for. I did call my Dr. his nurse talked to him gave him the message of my side effects. His nurse called back said the Dr. said he did not think it was the prednisone causing this & suggested I lower the dose to one daily but that if I wanted to stop taking it I could. I stopped taking it. Read More Read Less

My skin tends to react against itself when I use the wrong soap, or body powder, or anti-perspirant. I have prednisolone ointment for small outbreaks, but anything big requires a hit with the oral stuff. It generally takes several days to work, and I add something else to my list of what to keep away from. The latest was a “dermitalogically-tested” soap “for sensitive skin”. You can never tell.

My 4 yr old was born with tracheomalacia – his upper airway was not fully developed. He has ‘grown out’ of it but still has very wheezy breathing. He is commonly prescribed Prednisone for allergies, when he gets a cold or flu, etc. I think this medicine is very good at quickly relieving his symptoms. We have never noticed any unusual reactions in him to this medication. The other comments I have read made by parents are describing normal things normal children do – even if it seems ‘out of the ordinary’ specific to your child. My son has ADHD (maybe that is why we notice to ‘wild’ side effects?) But as I said – crying, toiling over food & sleep, throwing themselves around, even pinching & biting are just things children do. Relax!Read More Read Less

Hello

I took prednisolone for about 2 years after 1 year without it. I started drinking again for health reasons but did not drink for long, about a month. During this month, I overdosed twice. After the end of this month, menstruation stopped going for 3 months. Is it related to this drug? Can prednisolone lead to female problems?

Treatment of subacute thyroiditis. Transforming from girl to woman! Probability of cancer and presyncope.

Hello everyone! The story is long, full of my fears, but ending well) At the end of last year, I fell ill with an unknown disease.
Subacute thyroiditis (de Quervain’s thyroiditis, granulomatous thyroiditis) is a thyroiditis that is accompanied by inflammation due to a viral infection.
In other words, inflammation of the thyroid gland.
How did I get sick?
It started at the end of November.
No, I didn’t get sick the day before with any infectious diseases, I didn’t catch a cold. It was like this: the child and I were lying on the couch. I was lying on my back with my eyes closed, and he jumped on top of me. It so happened that he hit me with his hands right in the neck, in the thyroid gland on the left. I was very hurt! I even coughed. During the day, my neck just hurt, and at night I realized that my t was rising. I was shivering, I didn’t measure the pace, but offhand I’ll say that it was about 37.3. In the morning I woke up, only my neck hurt.
After a couple of days, I noticed that I had a lump in the exact place where the child had hit. It was even visible if I lifted my chin up. I thought that the child had injured me there and, perhaps, a hematoma had formed there. Yes, I’m still my own doctor)) Three days passed, my neck hurt. Then I started to shiver and the pace rose to 37.5. I drank Nimesil powder. It was enough for me for 16 hours, then again the pain and the rate of 37.5. So a week passed. Then the pain began to pass, I felt better. I was delighted) But I rejoiced early. The pace returned again, and I decided to make an appointment with a therapist. The therapist, after listening to me and looking at my bump on my neck, sent me to an endocrinologist. It’s good that there was absolutely no queue and I went in without any problems. The endocrinologist wrote out a referral for general blood tests and hormones, ultrasound of the thyroid gland. The diagnosis was “Subacute thyroiditis?” questionable.
I was 70 kg with a height of 163 cm.
Early January
Early January
Early January
Diagnosis Blood tests showed a slight increase in hormones and ESR.
The endocrinologist said that the increase is not serious, so it makes no sense to treat me with hormones, there will be more side effects. We decided to wait to see what the ultrasound would show.
Ultrasound showed that I have a tumor in the left lobe of the thyroid gland. When I heard the word “neoplasm” from the doctor at the ultrasound, my eyes almost went dark! Yes, we are simple people, not particularly knowledgeable, if we hear such words, then it is immediately associated with cancer. I left the ultrasound room with a lump in my throat, went home and did not even know what to think … Fear, misunderstanding how this could be.
At the appointment, the endocrinologist said that you need to do a puncture of the thyroid gland. She did not say the word “cancer”, she generally said it all somehow, she tried not to scare me. But I was already frightened, and the most terrible thoughts swarmed in my head.
At that moment, I felt even worse. Sweating, fatigue and tachycardia were added to the pain in the neck and pace.
Tachycardia – an increase in heart rate (HR) from 90 beats per minute.
I wasn’t exercising, I was just lying on the couch, and suddenly I couldn’t get enough air. I felt my heart was beating very fast. I heard it, I felt it pounding inside. Measured the pressure – elevated. My heart was beating 112 beats per minute. I usually have it beats 72-75 beats per minute. I felt very weak and wanted to sleep. I literally fell asleep from impotence. My mother is knowledgeable in such matters, she herself has heart problems, and she was prescribed pills that slow down her heart rate. There were no pills at home and the husband ran to the pharmacy.
I drank one tablet of Anaprilin. After 20 minutes, I felt better. Since then, I have been taking Anaprilin almost every day. My heart rate jumped due to any physical activity, even the smallest, due to excitement, nerves.
The day of X has come. I went for a thyroid puncture under ultrasound control. For those who do not know what it is: they hold an ultrasound on the thyroid gland, look at the monitor, take a syringe and pierce the thyroid gland, collect material from it.
Before going to the Diagnostic Center, I became ill. I was worried anyway. I drank Anaprilin and went. It takes me literally 5 minutes to walk to the DC. She came and sat in line. I sit and understand that my heart is already going wild. From this, I begin to panic even more and my head begins to spin and slightly darken in my eyes. In order not to crash right in the corridor, I got up and went to my office, at that time there was no one there, the doctor wrote the Conclusion of the previous patient.
I went in and asked if they had anything to check heart rate. I couldn’t really speak, my lips somehow cramped strangely or something … They sat me on the couch, the doctor immediately asked me for the results of an ultrasound scan and told the nurse to bring a tonometer. After looking at the ultrasound, he said that I most likely have a toxic adenoma.
Toxic thyroid adenoma is a benign formation in which there is an increased production of hormones, the node increases, and the activity of healthy areas of the gland is inhibited.
Toxic thyroid adenoma affects the activity of the heart and blood vessels.
The pressure was 130, I don’t remember the lower one. The nurse didn’t tell me the heart rate. The pressure for me is high, my usual is 90/60 or 100/70. I said that before going out I drank Anaprilin, the doctor said that it works in half an hour. At that time, 20 minutes had passed. I was told to sit on the couch, relax and try not to be nervous. I missed my turn. I calmed down, I felt better, but my heart still beat often. The doctor suggested rescheduling the puncture for another day. It was 29December, and I understood that later there was nowhere)) I pulled myself together and went for the procedure.
Everything went almost smoothly, except for the fact that the doctor could not get the right amount of material in any way and pricked me 3 times.
I waited for the result of the puncture until January 9th. Can you imagine waiting so many days for a cancer test result? Celebrate the New Year, Christmas … Of course, I calmed myself down and thought that I couldn’t have anything like that, but thoughts still creep in! On January 9, I got the result. Understood nothing. All written in medical terms. At home, I started searching on the Internet, after a long search, I found that I don’t have cancer! Phew) you can exhale.
I am happy to call the clinic to make an appointment with an endocrinologist. I hear the answer: “Endocrinologists on sick leave” I decide to wait 1.5 weeks until the end of b/l at my endocrinologist. This week my pace increased to 38 degrees! I felt bad. After 1.5 weeks I called the clinic – the same thing. But with the addition that it is generally unknown when the endocrinologists will come out of the hospital. As a result, my weeks of suffering are in vain!
I signed up for a paid appointment with an endocrinologist at the Diagnostic Center. By that time, the blood tests were already overdue (they were just over a month old). At that moment, as luck would have it))) I felt good, overheated that week and everything is ok. To my complaints, the endocrinologist said that it was hardly subacute thyroiditis. She said that it is necessary to take tests again, only then will she make a diagnosis and prescribe treatment.
Having found out how much tests cost at the Diagnostic, I decided to go to my free clinic. While I signed up for a therapist … While she gave me a blood coupon, while the endocrinologist nurse gave me a blood coupon (by the way, she gave it for free at the same Diagnostic), while I took all the results … In general, I again with a temperature of under 38 and barely a soul in the body I make an appointment with an endocrinologist for a fee. According to the analyzes, the hormones were 10 more than the norm, ESR 26 at a rate of up to 15.
Diagnosis
On the appointed day, I simply could not stand on my feet. My husband and I went to Diagnosticheskiy by taxi! If you remember, walk to it from the strength of 5 minutes. The taxi driver said that this was his shortest trip in his entire career)))) At the appointment with the endocrinologist, I sat all wet, my hands were weak, my heartbeat was high. The endocrinologist said that I still have subacute thyroiditis. She prescribed me treatment with Prednisolone tablets. In parallel, Omeprazole and weekly monitoring of ESR in the blood.
Pro Prednisolone
In simple words, the essence of Prednisolone is that it kills excess hormones that the thyroid gland begins to produce in large quantities. Due to this, the number of hormones in the body returns to normal, and we feel good. But at what cost … I will write the side effects that I had and the special instructions that affected me.
Side effect: On the part of metabolism: weight gain, increased sweating.
From the musculoskeletal system: muscle weakness
From the nervous system: nervousness or anxiety, insomnia
On the part of the skin and subcutaneous fat: thinning and fragility of the skin (my cuticle dried up, the skin on my fingers cracked) Special instructions: Use with caution in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract: gastritis. Prednisolone inhibits the uptake of glucose by fat cells, which leads to the activation of lipolysis. However, due to an increase in insulin secretion, lipogenesis is stimulated, which contributes to the accumulation of fat.
Lipid metabolism: increases the synthesis of higher fatty acids and TG, redistributes fat (accumulation of fat mainly in the shoulder girdle, face, abdomen), leads to the development of hypercholesterolemia.
This is exactly what touched me. In fact, Prednisolone has a LOT of side effects and terrible ones, I would say. Starting from dizziness, ending with diabetes mellitus and cardiac arrest. I will not write the details of the instructions here, it will take up a lot of space, and it is easy to find it on the Internet.
Treatment
I had treatment for two months. I started with 6 tablets (30 mg) per day and gradually reduced to 0.5 tablets (2.5 mg) per day. At the same time, they prescribed to drink Omeprazole, because. I have chronic gastritis. Omeprazole did not help me, my stomach hurt and very badly. I started drinking Almagel A, it somehow helped me. Along with medication, the doctor prescribed to eat more vegetables, protein, not to eat sweets, not to drink coffee. In general, I excluded everything that I eat every day. I will say right away – I did not follow the diet. The only thing I tried to do was to replace homemade soups with just chicken breast broth.
After taking the first two pills, I felt much better! Yes, it’s so good that I thought that I didn’t need to be treated anymore, I recovered) The feeling that you can move mountains is real! I had a temperature for almost 2 weeks and I had no strength, and then I galloped like a horse. Joy did not last long. After 4 days of taking, the stomach was terribly worried. But these are flowers compared to what happened to me 3 weeks after I started taking the pills.
Passing by the mirror, as always, I glanced at myself .. “What’s what, wait a minute …” I returned to the mirror. DOUBLE CHIN! Double chin, Carl! To say that I was shocked is to say nothing … But in fact, I expected that I would get better, but not the same way! Not in the most visible place Photo when I just started to swell: February
February
February
February
Further it was worse… Cheeks! My cheeks are swollen … My face is already closer to a round one, but here you can even circle around with a compass! Then I became like a weightlifter. My hands have become, as it were, powerful … In general, EVERYTHING that was written in the instructions about “getting fat” – got fat! I rushed to the Internet to read forums. There, people wrote that they were getting better: some by 10 kg, some by as much as 30! Someone excluded from the diet ALL products from which you can get fat and still gained weight, though insignificant. People complained that they could not lose kg after canceling Prednisolone. This drove me into such despondency … In general, I didn’t want anything, just eat. YES! Eat! Prednisolone increases appetite to the level of “HORSE” Plus, after 20 minutes after taking the pill, I was terribly thirsty! I drank a lot. Usually I don’t drink and don’t eat so much) Also, at the beginning of taking the pills, I was very drawn to salty! I bought preserves, say salted tuna in white sauce, and I could eat almost everything. I was unrealistically high on salty! Then she drank, drank, drank … After a while it passed.
I stopped loving myself anyway after giving birth – I got better, sagged … And then I hated it at all!
While taking Prednisolone, my mood changed literally every 10 minutes. Here I am sitting and everything is fine with me, but then I get turned on by the fact that my husband “unsuccessfully” joked. I snapped at my husband, I snapped at my family. I felt constantly tired. I wanted to be alone, so that no one would touch me. Can you imagine what it is like when you have a 1.5 year old child? When you simply have nowhere to go and only this is already driving you into depression.
In the middle of taking the pills, my cuticles began to dry, the skin around my nails began to crack.
At the end of the reception, memory problems began. As I walked from room to room, I forgot what I wanted to say. Sometimes I remembered the names of some household items. This alarmed me, even my mother noticed that something was wrong with me. I read on the internet that this happens with a lack of a hormone.
I noted on the calendar how many days I should take Prednisolone. At the end of the session, I was almost jumping for joy! I decided for myself that there is no point in losing weight “now”. I’ll wait until the drug is discontinued and slowly begin to put myself in order. I have problems with this. I didn’t eat once in my life after 18-00 and I lost weight, of course, but then I returned to eating in the evening and entered my weight. Yes, giving up some foods and sweets is a problem for me. This is hard for me. Not all physical exercises can be done due to some sores (thanks pregnancy))) Recovery
After the cancellation of Prednisolone, I went to see a paid endocrinologist, because mine are still on sick leave. Already 3 months! The doctor said that I had a serious illness and had undergone serious treatment. According to the analyzes, thank God, everything was normal!
She also said to limit sweets. I limit as much as I can) I ate sweets 1 time in 3 weeks) After 3 months, again blood tests and ultrasound. The doctor did not like my tumor in the thyroid gland, he says that we need to monitor it now. The state of health is generally good, but sometimes the general fatigue, fatigue worries.
After the abolition of Prednisolone, I began to weigh 73 kg. I recovered by 3 kg, and judging by the face, by all 10!
It’s been 2 weeks since Prednisolone was canceled and my cheeks started to fall off! I was the first to pay attention, I asked my husband, he confirmed – my cheeks were sleeping. Blown away)) and hung. Here’s what I look like now. There are no beautiful photos, I don’t decorate myself now, I don’t like to take pictures now, so just a home option: The second chin in person

Prednisolone is still recommended! He put me on my feet from the very first use! I am ready to sacrifice beauty for the sake of recovery.
