What Does a Scorpion Sting Look Like?

Scorpions stings are rarely fatal, but they can cause troublesome pain and swelling. Symptoms of a scorpion sting are similar to bee stings or spider bites, but they have distinct side effects that are telltale signs of a scorpion.

Read on to learn more about scorpions and how to identify when you’ve been stung by a scorpion from our Las Vegas pest control team.

Learn about our Las Vegas scorpion removal and prevention services by contacting our team today!

What Are Scorpions?

Scorpions are considered predatory arachnids. They have eight legs and are easy to recognize with their pinchers and tail that curves over their back. In the United States, scorpions can be found in the southwest, where the climate is warm and dry, such as:

  • Nevada
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • New Mexico

What Are Common Types of Scorpions Found in the U.S.?

There are about 90 different species of scorpions in the U.S. Of these species, there are three common scorpion types found in the Southwestern United States, including:

1.

Bark Scorpion (Centruroides Sculpturatus)

As one of the most common and venomous scorpions, bark scorpions thrive in communities and can quickly invade your property. These have a skinny tail, usually light yellow or tan, and are about three inches long.

2. Striped Tail Scorpion (Paravaejovis Spinigerus)

With an easily identifiable striped tail, this common scorpion is not a great climber and, therefore, less likely to be found in homes. They have a broad tail and average three inches in length. Their venom is less potent than other types of scorpions, but their sting is no less painful.

3. Giant Hairy Scorpion (Hadrurus Arizonensis)

One of the largest species in the United States can grow up to 8 inches long and is known for its extremely large and intimidating pinches and stinger. While they are aggressive hunters, their venom is weaker than other species.

How Does a Scorpion Sting Look?

A scorpion sting can look similar to a spider bite or a bee sting. The main difference is that scorpion stings are often accompanied by pain, numbness, or tinging where the stinger contacts the skin.

What Does a Scorpion Sting Feel Like?

A person who gets stung by a scorpion can have a variety of reactions, from mild to severe. While most stings are mild, here are some symptoms to be aware of:

Mild Symptoms

About 85% of scorpion stings¹ are mild and may include symptoms like:

  • Immediate pain, numbness, or stinging
  • Redness

Moderate Symptoms

Around 10% of stings cause a more painful reaction, including:

  • Painful shock waves
  • Pain that travels up the leg or arm where the sting occurred.

Severe Symptoms

Only 5% of stings result in severe symptoms or allergic reactions such as:

  • Muscle twitching
  • Trouble swallowing or breathing
  • Rapid eye movements
  • Blurry eyesight
  • Slurred speech

How Long Does a Scorpion Sting Last?

Scorpion sting symptoms usually begin immediately. Pain is most severe within the first two hours and gradually lessens over the following day or two. If you’ve been stung and are questioning what to do for a scorpion sting, it’s always best to contact a medical professional.

Have questions about how to prevent scorpions from getting into your home? Talk to one of our professionals and get some peace of mind.

How Do You Treat a Scorpion Sting?

If you’re wondering how to treat a scorpion sting, you can manage most scorpion stings at home with products you likely have on hand. Here’s what to do if a scorpion stings you:

  1. Clean the sting site with mild soap and water
  2. Apply a cool compress to reduce pain
  3. Take over-the-counter pain medication to ease symptoms
  4. Call your local poison control if you’re not sure what to do
  5. Check health information to ensure tetanus vaccine is up to date

Medically reviewed articles² state that most scorpion stings are minor and do not result in emergency care. However, a scorpion sting may produce a life-threatening situation in rare cases. The toxicity of the venom depends on the species of scorpion.

Who Is Most at Risk for Scorpion Stings?

For children and the elderly, getting stung by a scorpion may be more problematic. These victims tend to be more susceptible to the venom, possibly causing severe side effects and even a trip to the emergency room. Make sure to take note of sting symptoms and either call poison control or get medical help immediately if you’re concerned.

Can a Scorpion Sting Kill You?

If you found a scorpion in or around your home, it can be an alarming discovery that leaves you with questions like:

  • What happens if a scorpion stings you?
  • How bad is a scorpion sting?
  • Can you die from a scorpion sting?

So, are scorpion stings deadly? In the United States, deaths due to a scorpion sting are rare. In fact, in the last 50 years³, no one has died of a scorpion sting in the U. S. Some very dangerous scorpion species, such as the death stalker (Leiurus Quinquestriatus), produce an excruciating sting but would not usually kill a healthy adult.

Do Scorpions Die After Stinging?

Unfortunately, scorpions can sting more than once, but their venom gets depleted with each sting. If you ever encounter a scorpion or are stung by one, the best thing to do is move away quickly. See the information above for more on how to neutralize a scorpion sting.

photos, poisonous or not, dangerous, description

Many potential guests of the Crimea have time to hear enough horror stories about the “southern lands”, where all sorts of dangerous monsters are found. When they find out that scorpions live here, they become completely creepy. Consequently, vacationers often seek to immediately find out whether the Crimean scorpion is poisonous or not, not daring to book tours without this information.

Crimean scorpion – local

But biologists treat this animal with sympathy. The Crimean scorpion (Euscorpius tauricus) is endemic to the peninsula. This concept means that it is found only here and is isolated from its relatives in biological systematics. It belongs to the order of arachnids, but is not a spider – as it acts as a separate subspecies in this series.

Crimean scorpions are small – about 4 cm in total length. They are yellowish-brown above (the front and pincers are darker) and whitish-yellow below. A photo of them does not give an accurate idea about them – in the images they seem larger and scarier than they really are. The Crimean scorpion feeds on insects. The female gives birth to cubs alive (does not lay eggs) and for a week the babies manifest themselves as backbones in the literal sense – they ride on their mother’s back until the first molt.

Today, scientists classify these scorpions as the so-called synanthropic species, that is, those that constantly live in close proximity to humans. They hide in the walls of buildings (especially abandoned and destroyed ones), in fences, among garbage. People are not happy with this neighborhood. But the arthropod is also harmed by it – it is killed out of fear, it loses its habitat as the building is reconstructed and the ruins are demolished. Now the species is listed in the Red Book.

At the same time, you can meet a scorpion in many regions of the Crimea. Its usual habitats are near the coast, it inhabits the entire South Coast, is found in Sevastopol, in the Feodosia region and on the Kerch Peninsula.

Where are they found? Risk groups

It is unlikely to meet a scorpion on the beach. More than others, lovers of mountain tourism, historians and archaeologists should be afraid of unwanted contact (scorpions love ruins). The guests of the private sector, who have chosen an old house for the sake of cheapness, are at risk.

Walking through trash bins or abandoned buildings would not even occur to a sane person. But the lecture will not interfere with the “anti-scorpion” children, especially the younger school age. Children 7-12 years old tend to climb where they shouldn’t and try to catch all the living creatures they meet.

Fortunately for tourists, scorpions are especially aggressive during the mating season, which falls on April-May – the tourist season has not yet begun, although it is already beginning, so extra vigilance will not hurt.

Is the bite of the Crimean scorpion dangerous?

It is incorrect to talk about a scorpion’s bite – these creatures do not bite, but sting. A sharp, slightly curved sting is located on the tip of their flexible “tail”.

The responses of the victims are unequivocal: the creature stings in pain. But how dangerous is it? The answer is not very. Yes, it is poisonous, its sting will not improve health, but it does not threaten life. Serious consequences are possible for allergy sufferers, young children and those who have been stung in the neck or head (this happens with campers). The rest are threatened with just a few unpleasant hours.

Possible manifestations of poisoning after a sting can be:

  • severe itching and pain in the affected area;
  • dizziness, headache;
  • general weakness;
  • chills;
  • shortness of breath;
  • palpitations;
  • nausea.

Sometimes it happens that these symptoms appear some time after an unsuccessful encounter with a scorpion (up to a day). Then it can be difficult to determine their cause. But more often the symptoms appear quickly – literally in minutes.

Methods of treatment

Those stung by scorpions should only be taken to the doctor in case of a sting in the head or atypical reactions. The same applies to small (preschool age) children, although there are almost a few such cases.

An adult will do just fine on his own. It is harmful for him to move a lot – it is better to lie down and not move the damaged part of the body. Pain and itching can be relieved with water and vinegar or insect bites (it will not go away completely, but it will feel better). Cold compresses will work too. You can’t apply a tourniquet, cauterize the wound or cut it and suck out the blood.

Don’t do “general anesthesia” with strong drinks. But any antihistamine inside will not hurt, it is better to have it in any personal medicine cabinet when going to the Crimea. Sometimes you may need symptomatic treatment, such as a drug that normalizes the heart rhythm, or an antispasmodic to get rid of vomiting. But such medicines are usually available in all individual medicine cabinets.

Usually people are afraid of the pain of stings and the bad reputation of scorpions in general. But Crimean centipedes and some spiders (the same black widow) are much more dangerous than this animal. So the most likely negative result is the delay of the tourist group for a day on the route. Everything else will pass during this time.

Snakes, insects, scorpions – people are more often afraid of them all at once due to ignorance and inability to distinguish one species from another. In fact, a person is much more dangerous for these creatures than they are for him. And to ensure their own invulnerability, it is enough to learn a little biology.

  • Kaliningrad woman bought a bag of potatoes and ended up in the hospital because of a scorpion sting

Exotic creatures and where they live. A resident of Kaliningrad bought young potatoes and ended up in the hospital because of a scorpion sting.

How did an uninvited guest end up in our region? What to do if you are bitten by a poisonous animal?

Alena bought new potatoes. But dinner was not prepared that evening.

ALYONA REZNIKOVA, INJURED:

— She tore the package. We never untie. Here. And I started getting potatoes here. Throw in to wash. And here is the third potato. I remember on the third. He bit me.

There was a real scorpion in the bag. Further – acute pain and several days in the hospital. Diagnosis: toxic effect of scorpion venom.

ALYONA REZNIKOVA, INJURED:

— It feels like a very sharp pain. Well, like a wasp sting, only, probably, 10 times more painful. Immediately there is numbness. Well, I don’t know, as if they scalded their hand with boiling water. It hurt a lot, because I myself in the hospital asked for painkillers.

While Alyona was in the hospital, her husband caught the disturber of the peace and put him in a jar. Feed the pet with insects.

ALYONA REZNIKOVA, INJURED:

— He just sits in a bank, we throw spiders at him, I don’t know, we throw flies. He eats flies. Zhukov. Vaughn crawls himself. He doesn’t need much care.

At the base they deny their involvement. They explain: potatoes from Azerbaijan are packed in bags by hand and they could not miss such a passenger.

This is not the first case for Kaliningrad. Scorpions have been found in other places as well. Maria sent us this photo.

MARIA:

— Hello! I can only write that while cleaning I saw that there was a beetle on the floor, I wanted to take it, it quickly turned around and began to run under the baby’s bed. In shock, she crushed his tail with a children’s car! My husband was shocked when he got home from work!

Potato arthropod – female spotted scorpion. Lives in the Caucasus. According to the expert, such individuals can indeed live in Azerbaijan and quite often travel in vegetables or fruits.

ALEXANDER KHLEVTOV, CHIEF SPECIALIST OF THE TERRARIUM SECTOR:

— Scorpions are nocturnal animals, secretive, which usually spend the day somewhere under stones, under snags, in narrow crevices, and after dark they come out to hunt and go about their natural business. Most likely, it’s just that a scorpion somewhere climbed into a pile of potatoes, looking for shelter, they loaded it with these potatoes together in bags, and, accordingly, that’s how it came to us, by import.

Alena was lucky. This type of scorpion is low toxic, but if a person has an allergic reaction, then stinging can lead to disastrous consequences.

VALERY SERGEYEV, DOCTOR-METHODIST OF THE EDUCATIONAL CENTER OF THE TERRITORIAL CENTER FOR DISASTER MEDICINE:

— We know cases when a person becomes very ill from a simple bee or wasp sting. People prone to allergies, of course, will react completely differently. And snake bites. Their condition will be much worse.

There are scorpions in Russia. Their habitats: Lower Volga region, Crimea, Black Sea region. When stinging, the first aid rules are the same as when biting a snake, or, for example, a spider.

ANASTASIA MAKHINA, CORRESPONDENT:

— If you are alone and you are bitten by a scorpion, you need to ensure that you are in a sedentary state, then a cold compress is applied to the bite and fixed with a bat or any material at hand.

Next, you need to immobilize the injured limb and drink an antihistamine for prevention. But the most important thing is to call an ambulance.

Ambulance number 103. And before the arrival of the doctors, make sure you drink plenty of water. It will help remove toxins from your blood.

Scorpio lived with Alena for 5 days, and she didn’t know where to put him, so she gave him to us. We found him a home in an exotic pet store. Now the scorpion has a warm, dry terrarium, and Alena has peace in the house.

MIKHAIL KAZACHENOK, OWNER OF THE TERRARIUM STORE:

— Will live in our terrarium.
