Your Guide To Skin Care For Teens

Let’s face it: As a teenager, you have plenty to deal with without having to add doing research on the best skin care and acne treatments for teens to your to-do list. Studying for tests and planning for social events like prom is enough to fill up your schedule. The good news is, while curating the perfect skin care routine for teens may sound time-consuming, it doesn’t have to be. The best way to manage your skin during your teenage years is actually to find a routine that includes a few basics, like facial cleanser, moisturizer, and face masks, then be consistent with it.

Remember: How you treat your skin now will likely play a role in how your skin looks and feels in the future, even many years down the line. To start you off in the right direction, we’re sharing our seven best teenage skin care tips along with skin care product recommendations. Keep reading to learn how to build the best skin care routine for teens.

7 TIPS FOR CREATING A SKIN CARE ROUTINE FOR TEENS

These years are sure to be full of lots of trial and error, but the same doesn’t need to be true for your teenage skin care routine. Adhere to the following easy tips, and it should be smooth sailing.

TEEN SKIN CARE TIP #1: USE A FACIAL CLEANSER MORNING AND NIGHT

We won’t judge you if you haven’t been cleansing your skin every morning and night thus far. But from now on, no excuses. Washing your face is an absolute must for everyone, morning and night, and that includes teens. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), oily or acne-prone skin is prevalent in teenagers, meaning it could be necessary to wash your face as frequently as two to three times a day.

Most importantly, it’s all about choosing a facial cleanser formulated for your skin type, concerns, and needs. The L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay line, which contains two clay-to-mousse facial cleansers, has options for different skin types and can be used once per day (you’ll use a different face wash for your second cleanse of the day).

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Detox and Brighten Cleanser: It’s time to hop on the charcoal beauty trend. Immediately after using this clay cleanser formula, which is enhanced with charcoal, skin is purified of dirt, oil, and pollution and left with a clean, clear look. It’s suitable for all skin types.

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Exfoliate and Refine Cleanser: What do you get when you pair cleansing with exfoliation? That would be this facial cleanser! This clay cleanser goes beyond daily cleansing to help exfoliate the surface of your skin. Immediately, skin is purified of dirt, oil, and pollution and is left with a clean, clear look. It’s suitable for oily to combination skin.

TEEN SKIN CARE TIP #2: KEEP WHAT YOUR SKIN TOUCHES CLEAN

It would be nice if just cleansing your face was enough to take care of your skin in totality, but that isn’t quite the case. Besides your face, everything that your skin touches should be clean; otherwise bacteria, dirt, and oil can be transferred to your skin. No good. Pay attention to what your skin comes into contact with and keep it clean. That means wiping off your cell phone after making calls or texting and being sure to regularly wash your makeup blenders and brushes. (Here’s How to Clean Makeup Brushes and Blenders.)

TEEN SKIN CARE TIP #3: ALWAYS APPLY MOISTURIZER POST-CLEANSING

Sometimes two things just go together so well, you wouldn’t want one without the other. Peanut butter and jelly, milk and cookies, and of course, facial cleanser and moisturizer. Every time you break out your facial cleanser, you’ll want to follow up shortly afterward with moisturizer. While your skin is still damp, smooth on a hydrating cream or lotion that suits your skin type to lock in moisture. Have your pick from the moisturizers in the L’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius line.

L’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Daily Liquid Care – Normal/Dry Skin: Normal and dry skin faces external factors such as pollution and UV rays that can damage the skin’s moisture barrier, increasing loss of moisture and causing it to become drier. As a result, skin’s surface loses its glow and becomes dull-looking. This water-based moisturizer envelops skin with moisture for a radiant finish.

L’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Daily Liquid Care – Normal/Oily Skin: In normal and oily skin, external factors such as pollution, UV rays, and excessive cleansing can damage skin’s moisture barrier, causing loss of moisture and an increase in oil production. As a result, your complexion can start to look overly shiny. This water-based moisturizer helps reduce the appearance of excess shine and has a matte finish.

L’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Daily Liquid Care – Extra Dry Skin: Your skin has a very fragile moisture barrier that can be easily damaged by external factors such as pollution and UV rays. It consequently loses its ability to retain moisture, becoming easily dehydrated, and feeling tight and uncomfortable. This water-based moisturizer for extra dry skin envelops skin with comforting moisture.

TEEN SKIN CARE TIP #4: REDUCE STRESS

Your teenage skin care routine shouldn’t be solely product-focused. As a teen, we understand everything from school to social events to your parents can cause stress. While that’s perfectly normal, try to reduce stress when you can. According to the AAD, stress can cause acne to flare. No thanks! Consider taking up yoga as a way to unwind. Here are 10 Yoga Poses to De-Stress with This Weekend.

TEEN SKIN CARE TIP #5: DON’T FORGET ABOUT SUN PROTECTION

You’re not too young to start a daily sun protection routine. After moisturizing, reach for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and apply as directed. Toss the bottle in your backpack so you can reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating (which we bet you do in gym class!). In addition to applying and reapplying sunscreen, you should also limit your amount of time in the sun (especially during peak hours between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.), seek shade, and cover up exposed areas.

Editor’s note: If you’re not sure how to reapply sunscreen—especially without ruining your amazing makeup look—here’s How to Reapply Sunscreen the right way.

TEEN SKIN CARE TIP #6: MAKE EXFOLIATION A WEEKLY HABIT

You may be young, but that doesn’t mean your skin doesn’t need regular exfoliation. Sloughing off dead skin cell buildup, oil, dirt, and debris is a must if you want to keep your skin breakout-free. There’s no need to go overboard here—use a gentle face scrub once or twice a week to get started, and if your skin gets used to it quickly, you can increase the frequency.

The L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar line includes four different face scrubs made with a blend of three pure sugars. Choose from the following face scrubs based on your skin’s particular type and needs.

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Resurface & Energize Kona Coffee Scrub: Late nights spent studying and early morning classes can leave your skin (and you!) feeling and looking tired. Wake it up by exfoliating with this face scrub, which is formulated with real Kona coffee grounds and can help reenergize your complexion.

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Nourish & Soften Cocoa Scrub: If your skin tends to be on the dry side, this is the scrub for you. It’s formulated with nourishing coconut oil and rich cocoa butter, and will leave your skin feeling extra soft and hydrated.

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Smooth & Glow Grapeseed Scrub: Dull skin can happen to anyone, no matter their age. To combat that, this scrub gives your complexion a glow, thanks to a formula containing finely ground acai and grapeseed oil.

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Purify & Unclog Kiwi Scrub: Tend to break out often? This scrub, which is formulated with real kiwi seeds, is your match. It polishes away dead skin cells and purifies your pores.

TEEN SKIN CARE TIP #7: ADD FACE MASKS TO YOUR SOCIAL CALENDAR

Taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be a solitary activity. Invite a few friends over and set up a masking bar. Put out face masks that address various complexion concerns and have everyone coat their skin in at least one face mask. When one isn’t enough, try multi-masking. This trendy technique involves applying different face masks to different spots on your face—all at the same time. Basically, “the more the merrier” applies to both friends and face masks.

Below are four face masks you can wear alone or mix and match. Just apply your face mask(s) of choice to clean, dry skin, leave on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse off thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use two to three times a week for best results.

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Clear & Comfort Face Mask: Over time, harsh cleansing can be drying and sensitizing, leaving skin feeling uncomfortable. As a result, skin needs cleansing that is effective yet gentle. This face mask formula is enhanced with seaweed and can help draw out the buildup of impurities, dirt, and oils, and gently cleanse stressed areas.

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Detox & Brighten Face Mask: Over time, harsh environmental factors like pollution and debris can damage skin, leaving your complexion looking dull and tired. This face mask formula is enhanced with charcoal and can help draw out the buildup of impurities, dirt, and pollution, and reduce the look of dull skin.

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Exfoliate & Refining Face Mask: Day after day, dead skin cells can accumulate on the surface of your skin, leaving your complexion feeling rough. This face mask formula is enhanced with red algae extract and can help draw out the buildup of impurities, dirt, and oils, exfoliate dead skin cells, smooth the look of imperfections, and allow skin to breathe.

L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Clarify & Smooth Face Mask: Daily wear and tear—as well as makeup and improper care—can leave skin looking uneven with roughness and imperfections. This face mask formula is enhanced with yuzu lemon extract and draws out the buildup of impurities, dirt, and pollution, sheds rough, dead skin cells from skin’s surface, clarifies tone, and improves skin texture.

Skin Care Tips for Teens

Got acne? Then you know there’s no shortage of tips or products out there to help you control it. But sometimes they backfire and make your skin worse. The trick is to learn what type of skin you have, the best way to clean it, and how to choose products that won’t trigger a breakout.

What’s Your Skin Type?

The four main types are normal, dry, oily, and combination:

1. Normal Skin Care

Normal skin has an even, smooth skin tone; soft texture; and no visible blemishes, red spots, or flaky patches. Pores are barely visible, and the skin surface is neither greasy nor dry. Normal skin has few imperfections because of the balanced amount of water and oil and good blood circulation.

If your skin is normal, wash your face two to three times each day, with mild cleanser or plain soap and water, to remove dirt and sweat.

 2. Dry Skin Care

Dry skin is dull, rough, scaly, and itchy, with almost invisible pores. Dry skin is usually caused by an abnormal shedding of cells from the skin’s outer layer. In normal situations, lubrication from the body’s natural oils helps to prevent water loss from the skin.

If you have dry skin, wash your face daily with a mild cleanser. This will help prevent your skin from becoming drier. Moisturize with a nonperfumed, nonalcohol-containing cream after washing.

Also, limit very hot showers, high temperatures, and low humidity, which rob your skin of moisture. Even using soap and excessive washing or scrubbing of the skin increases dryness. Many teens have drier skin during the winter months, when humidity is low and heaters force hot, dry air into enclosed rooms.

If your skin is very dry, take a warm bath for about 20 minutes. Avoid using soap or other drying products. When you get out of the tub, pat your body dry, then rub mineral oil (found at most supermarkets and drugstores) or a nonperfumed, nonalcohol cream or ointment all over your skin. Pat your skin dry again. The oil or cream helps to lock in healing moisture, keeping skin supple and soft.

 3. Oily Skin Care

Oily skin is acne-prone skin with open pores, a shiny complexion, blackheads, and pimples. Because hormones affect oil production, anything that affects your hormone levels may influence your skin. Some experts believe that stress, such as from exams, may trigger outbreaks of acne. Many teens know that acne in itself creates added stress!

To keep oily skin clean, wash your face three times a day with plain soap and water. If you need to cleanse your face at school, use an over-the-counter cleansing pad that helps dissolve oil and remove excess dirt from the skin surface.

If you have pimples, never pop or squeeze them, which can spread the inflammation and worsen acne.

Use cosmetics and other facial products that are “noncomedogenic,” meaning they do not clog pores. Keep your hair off your face, and wash your hair daily to reduce oil. While it may seem illogical, using a light lotion on your skin will help it better tolerate the drying effect of acne medications.

 4. Normal/Combination Skin Care

With normal/combination skin, you might have an oily “T-Zone” (forehead, nose, and chin) and dry skin elsewhere. The pores on your face are large, and the skin tends to have blackheads.

Normal/combination skin can be either overly dry or excessively oily, while cheeks may appear rough. Depending on the time of year, the oiliness and dryness can change, too. The skin is usually drier when the weather is cold.

If you have normal/combination skin, wash your face two or three times a day with plain soap and water to remove the excess oil. Moisturize dry areas but not oily areas.

4 Simple Steps to Healthy Skin

Here are the four simple steps to healthy skin:

1. Cleanse

It’s important to cleanse your skin daily to remove dirt, oil, and dead skin flakes. Washing your skin also rids the skin of excess oil, which can prevent acne.

If you have oily or normal/combination skin, use a daily cleanser that contains salicylic acid. This ingredient is used in many popular “acne washes” such as the Neutrogena products. Salicylic acid controls oil production and increases hydration.

You can also use sulfur cleansers and masks to dry out the skin/exfoliate. They tend to be gentler on the skin than salicylic acid. Benzoyl peroxide washes, creams, foams and gels are antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory and are very helpful in acne treatment.

A cleanser containing glycolic acid can help rid skin of dead cells. It’s useful for teens who can’t tolerate prescription retinoid creams (like Renova and Retin-A). Read the label to see if your cleanser contains these ingredients.

To remove eye make-up, especially waterproof mascara, there are products specifically formulated for the eye area. But some gentle facial cleansers can effectively remove eye and facial makeup, as well as cleanse the skin. Choose products that are fragrance-free to avoid irritating the eye area.

2. Hydrate/Moisturize

When you hydrate your skin, you simply add water, such as when washing your face or taking a bath. To moisturize your skin, you add water, oil, or both.

For most skin types, you should moisturize skin morning and evening, using a moisturizer that does not aggravate a skin problem.

For instance, never put heavy cream on oily skin that is prone to breakouts. For oily skin, the moisturizer should be oil-free, but have hydrating qualities. Always apply moisturizers after cleansing and hydrating your skin.

3. Treat

Many teens need to treat skin conditions such as acne, which occurs when pores on the surface of skin become clogged. This happens when oil glands produce too much oil and pores get blocked with dirt, bacteria, and debris. Sometimes, moisturizers and greasy cosmetics contribute to the development of acne. Oils or dyes in hair products can worsen acne by blocking pores.

While soaps and astringents remove oil from the skin, they don’t alter the oil production. Scrubbing the skin sometimes causes irritation, which triggers acne instead of resolving it.

Skin products containing benzoyl peroxide may help to treat mild acne if you use them sparingly (once daily in the evening). The goal is to treat all oily areas of the face — forehead, chin, nose, and cheeks — not just where you notice pimples. Treating the areas that tend to break out may help prevent future pimples.

Some of these products can cause the skin to become too dry if overused. If you feel stinging or burning, rinse your skin with mild soap and water. Try the topical benzoyl peroxide again the next day.

Some over-the-counter acne products can cause rare but serious allergic reactions or severe irritation. Seek emergency medical attention if you have symptoms such as throat tightness, difficulty breathing, feeling faint, or swelling of the face or tongue. Also stop using the product if you develop hives or itching. Symptoms can appear anywhere from minutes to a day or longer after use.

Be aware that you must use benzoyl peroxide daily for at least a month before you’ll see the full effect. You have to be a bit patient.

4. Protect

After cleansing your skin, protect it daily from the sun and other environmental factors. Use a moisturizing sunscreen with zinc oxide (at least 7%) and a SPF of 30 or higher (depending on your skin pigmentation or color) for UVA and UVB coverage year-round.

Wearing sunscreen with protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants and wide-brimmed hats, while avoiding the sun’s peak ultraviolet B (burning) rays (from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.), may provide some protection against premature aging and skin cancer.

Why Moisturize Skin?

Water is an essential part of healthy skin. Normally, hydration moves from the inside of the skin to the outer layer. When skin lacks hydration, it becomes dry and flaky. Without adequate moisture, skin looks dry and dull. During winter, the icy outdoor air and blasts of heat from the furnace make things worse. You can compensate for these “moisture robbers” by using over-the-counter moisturizers and drinking plenty of water.

A moisturizer is a product that functions to increase the water content of the skin’s top layer. Choose a moisturizer that includes a broad-spectrum sunscreen to help protect your skin from the sun’s rays. If you have sensitive skin, avoid moisturizers with added fragrance.

When Should I Call A Doctor About My Skin?

No matter what your skin type, if you are unsure how to treat acne or other skin problems, talk to your primary health care provider or a dermatologist. Contact a doctor when:

  • Your acne is severe. A dermatologist can help get this under control.
  • Over-the-counter treatments don’t clear up your acne. Using a nonprescription treatment such as a topical retinoid gel or those containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or lactic acid for a couple of months should help. If not, it’s time to see an expert.
  • The acne appeared after you started taking a medication. Some drugs for anxiety, depression, and other conditions can cause acne or similar symptoms. Your doctor might be able to change your prescription.
  • You notice acne scars. Your dermatologist will get your skin condition under control and then treat the scars.
  • It affects your self-esteem. Having clearer skin could make you feel more confident and less self-conscious.

Which Doctor Should You See?

You can start with your pediatrician or the family doctor. Or you could go right to a dermatologist.

The doctor will probably want some information from you, such as:

  • When did the acne start?
  • Has it stayed about the same, or has it gotten better or worse?
  • What treatments have you tried and for how long? How well did they work?
  • Does the acne affect your self-esteem or social life?

You should also bring a list of any medications or supplements you take.

You’ll want to ask some questions, too. Good ones include:

  • Are over-the-counter treatments enough? What do you recommend?
  • What habits would help me?
  • What’s the best way to cleanse and take care of my skin?
  • What can we do to make acne scars less likely?
  • What kind of makeup will cover up acne?

If the doctor recommends a prescription cream or medicine, ask them:

  • What’s the name of this medicine, and why do you recommend it?
  • What are the side effects?
  • How should I use it?
  • How long will I need it?
  • How soon should I expect to see results?
  • When should we schedule a follow-up appointment?

Treating your skin properly each day is the key to avoiding more serious skin problems.

Best Skincare For Teens & Tweens – Face Wash & More

The mystery of exactly how hormones are going to change your child extends to practically every aspect of life, from the way they act, to how they look, to the way they sleep. How—and when—hormones are going to affect their skin is yet another unknowable factor. Childrens’ oil glands shut off at about six months of age, says New York dermatologist and psychologist Amy Wechsler, herself the parent of a teenager. “You know how infants get cradle cap? That’s the oil glands, activated by the mother’s hormones in the womb.” Inactive throughout childhood, the skin’s oil glands can be among the first changes stimulated by the hormones of puberty. “Acne and seborrheic dermatitis—dandruff—sadly, often comes before the rest of the signs of puberty, sometimes as early as eight or nine,” she says. Before that happens, kids’ skin doesn’t need much beyond clean SPF (more on that later), but once it does, it can show up as anything from mild oiliness to a severe breakout. “For the most part, it’s the T-zone, and for the most part, just blackheads and whiteheads,” says Wechsler.

New York dermatologist Robert Anolik points out that 85 percent of people between twelve and twenty-four experience problem skin: “Frustratingly, it often continues into adulthood.” As anyone who’s ever had even a single pimple knows, a bad skin day can be far worse than a bad hair day. “It’s so important to address—I always thank parents for bringing their kids in,” says Wechsler. “I tell them we can fix this, but it will take some time: No acne patient sees real changes for at least six weeks, so you’ve got to prepare everyone for that.”

Cleansers for Teens

Your moment to teach your child about daily cleansing—the most critical aspect of getting a routine started—is once you see signs of oily skin or breakouts. “It’s absolutely something you have to teach,” says Wechsler. “It’s uncomfortable and weird at first to have soap or cleanser all over your face. Just like you’d teach a kid to shave their underarms or legs, you have to show them how to do it.” (Or shaving for boys, which generally comes later, but Wechsler gives the tip that when the time does come, electric razors are much gentler on skin, easier to use, and harder to hurt yourself with than regular ones.)

Because an evening washing is much more strategic, focus on that first. If your child showers at night, take advantage of the fact that they’re already wet and cleansing, says Anolik. “To make cleansing a separate step at the sink can be difficult,” he says. “I often have them use a facial cleanser in the shower when they are already lathering up. Shampoo to hair, cleanser to face, body wash to body.”

“Unless a kid is a really sweaty sleeper, the morning is much less important,” agrees Wechsler. “And truly it’s just a lesson: Cleanse all the way up to the hairline, behind the ears, the shoulders, the back. And if there’s a gentle bar they already use for body, they can start by using the same thing for face.”

Anolik recommends cleansers as opposed to true soaps: “They can strip the skin of its surface natural barrier because they have a very high pH relative to a more neutral skin surface,” he says. “Cleansers are more neutral in pH and therefore much less irritating.”

True Botanicals Clear Hydrating Cleanser

goop, $48

Created specifically for those with problematic skin, this soothing cleanser gently removes impurities and dead skin cells. Black willow bark, a natural source of salicylic acid, plus green and white tea extracts, tone and calm, leaving skin deeply cleansed, balanced, and nourished.

Goldfaden MD Pure Start

goop, $35

Made with spearmint and alfalfa, this gel clarifies, oxygenates, and energizes skin with natural extracts that calm congested, acne-prone skin. Good for oily skin types, and those prone to hyperpigmentation.

Binu Binu Shaman Black Charcoal Soap

goop, $18

This detoxifying black body soap is inspired by the purification ceremonies of modern-day Korea’s female shamans, known as Mudang, revered for their wisdom as healers of both body and mind. It’s made with activated charcoal; essential oils of lavender, Himalayan cedarwood, and clary sage; shea and cocoa butters; coconut, castor, olive, and sweet almond oils, for a soothing but thorough and invigorating cleanse. It leaves your skin so soft, moisturized, nourished, and of course, deeply purified.

Ursa Major Fantastic Face Wash

goop, $28

A brilliant combination of effective but gentle, this essential oil blend clarifies, brightens, soothes, and hydrates normal/combination/oily skin. The foaming gel wash has to be best-smelling on earth—it’s a mix of cedar, spearmint, lime, lemon, rosemary, black spruce, owyhee, vetiver, and lavender oils, among others, and it’s perfectly balanced to refresh skin, yet leave its protective mantle intact. You will love it, your significant other will steal it, any products you use afterward will absorb better. All in, everyone’s skin will be happier.

Extra Cleansing for Teens

A child involved in athletics is going to need more. “If you know you’re going to be sitting on a bus for an hour after a game in sweaty clothes, bring an extra sports bra, and extra t-shirt,” says Wechsler. “Think about shoulder pads, and make sure helmets and chin straps are clean, too.” Wipes can be incredibly helpful after exercise—and for cleansing-resistant tweens and teens, can stand in for cleansing, especially if they have salicylic acid in them (Ursa Major’s do, and they’re individually wrapped, making them especially amazing for travel; RMS’s individually-wrapped wipes take advantage of the soothing caprylic acid in coconuts). The nice thing about the salicylic acid in wipes is it stays on the skin, helping to cleanse pores. *It’s important to note that going clean with wipes is especially important—conventional wipes contain preservatives, not to mention skin-irritating fragrance in most cases.

Ursa Major Essential Face Wipes

goop, $24

The company’s miracle 4-1 Face Tonic formula is infused into each individually-wrapped bamboo-cloth face wipe—use as a pH-balancing cleanser, gentle-but-powerful exfoliant, potent skin-healer, and firming hydrator, for all skin types. The wipes smell subtly of orange, fir, and lavender—refreshing after the gym, beautiful for taking off makeup, life-changing for the breakout-prone.

RMS Beauty Ultimate Makeup Remover Wipe – 20 Pack

goop, $16

These easy-to-use, easy-to-transport cleansing cloths are stealth skincare treatments. Made with cold-centrifuged organic coconut oil, which contains rare lauric and caprillic acids—found mostly in breast milk and destroyed by heat, including typical “cold-pressed” processes—these have powerful antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties. They are ultra-moisturizing, yet don’t cause breakouts (and can actually help treat them), and are gentle enough around the delicate eye area to smooth away mascara. Brilliant for all skin types, from sensitive to blemish-prone to super-dry.

Topical Treatments for Teens

If your child is actively experiencing breakouts, the next thing to add in is a topical treatment—used daily all over the face, as opposed to typically harsher “spot treatments”. “The spot treatments don’t work all that well,” says Wechsler. “Acne takes time to clear up either way, and a harsh, drying product often makes it worse.” Start with a gentle salicylic acid treatment that’s mildly exfoliating yet not drying. Alternately, there are breakout-targeting face oils like Herbivore’s Blue Tansy that’s infused with skin-calming azulene. Wechsler says she likes to use a retinoid like Differin (a gel form of which just became available over the counter) in the evening after cleansing, and topical clindamicin in the morning if needed. While not necessarily toxic, benzoyl peroxide is irritating, especially to more-sensitive tween and teen skin. “It’s not uncommon to have a irritation to benzoyl peroxide products—but they are very effective,” says Anolik. “If it’s well tolerated and someone has inflamed, cystic types of acne, I do recommend it. A few things to note: Low-concentration benzoyl peroxide can work very well, so typically I don’t jump to recommending higher, more irritating concentrations.” Wechsler says she uses it most for cases of body acne, and even then likes it in wash form. “Benzoyl peroxide bleaches fabric—clothing, sheets—so it’s better to wash it off,” she says.

Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch

goop, $13

These semi-sheer, basically-invisible patches are game-changing when you have a blemish. Place the tiny round sticker over a spot and it doubles as an intense hydrocolloid treatment and as a cover that makes zits less noticeable. They are so discreet that we wear them out running errands, overnight, and around the goop office.

True Botanicals Clear Pure Radiance Oil

goop, $110

Created specifically for people with problem skin, this face oil works in place of a moisturizer and feels amazing on skin. Helichrysum combines with hemp, pumpkin, and grape-seed oils to soothe and hydrate skin, leaving it balanced and glowy. Essential fatty acids from algae extract and astaxanthin support the skin’s natural barrier to help it stay hydrated.

The problem of irritation is a significant one, says Wechsler. “People tend to want to throw the book at a breakout, and they’ll layer on drying thing after irritating thing, benzoyl peroxide on top of a really strong clay mask, on top a harsh scrub, etc. Inflammation makes acne worse. Slow and steady treats even serious breakouts.” A calming mask, however, can be a fun and slightly silly ritual that really engages a kid.

Clark’s Botanicals Dual Charcoal Detox

goop, $45

This powerful yet gentle exfoliant works brilliantly as a mask and a cleanser to leave your skin fresh, smooth, and practically poreless. Two types of charcoal (Japanese binchotan charcoal and activated charcoal powder) work with mango, pineapple, and mango fruit extracts to gently exfoliate and absorb impurities, while a unique species of jasmine—found in Italy’s Dolomite Mountains—moisturizes and brightens, leaving skin glowy. The detox works for all skin types but is especially great for dull or problem skin. To cleanse, massage gently onto damp skin and rinse off. To use as a mask, apply a thick layer for five to fifteen minutes, then gently wash off with warm water. Either way, it leaves your skin purified, luminous, and totally detoxified.

In-office blue light treatments soothe skin; both Wechsler and Anolik use them with tween and teen patients. For more severe cases, medications like antibiotics and Accutane can be used starting at age 12. Wechsler always emphasizes that if a patient ever has a pimple that’s large enough to inject with cortisone that’s really bothering them, she’ll always make the time to see them that day. If you feel it’s merited, never hesitate to drag even a reluctant sufferer to the dermatologist: it’s a problem worth fixing.

Clean SPF for Teens

As tough as it is to get your child to cleanse, put at least as much effort into getting them to use sun protection. “So many teens and tweens don’t worry about sun tans or burns—many like being tan, and don’t worry about the harm it causes,” says Anolik. “It’s part of their feeling of immortality at that age. Sun damage is cumulative, and the more you get in childhood and tween years, the more evidence of it—looking older than you are, getting skin cancers—you’ll have later in life.” Girls experiencing breakouts may already be interested in makeup to help cover it up, and since many tinted moisturizers and foundations have SPF in them, this can be a brilliant synergy. “Step it up in terms of quality,” says Wechsler, who skips the drugstore entirely when shopping for a tween/teen tint or foundation. “You want formulas made with skin care ingredients.”

Clean mineral makeup, made with titanium dioxide has a soothing effect on skin. That said, covering up fresh, youthful skin with full-on makeup is crazy: More translucent SPFs like the one from Vive Sana or Beautycounter are ideal; Rituel de Fille and RMS Beauty both make concealers infused with calming ingredients. For boys or girls who want no tint Ursa Major’s SPF 18 is weightless and rubs in incredibly easily.

Vive Sana Daily Protezione SPF30

goop, $55

This isn’t just a clean SPF 30. Zinc oxide combines with deeply hydrating argan oil, antioxidant raspberry seed and green tea, along with soothing licorice root to protect and nourish skin, all in one light cream. It sinks in beautifully, blurring imperfections and leaving the healthiest-looking glow.

Beautycounter Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

goop, $45

This glowy, translucent, instantly perfecting SPF 20 has to be the ultimate no makeup-makeup of all time. It’s less about masking flaws, and more about looking and feeling like you—but better. The delicate, deeply hydrating formula smoothes in like a dream; zinc oxide soothes and protects all day; black currant, peony-root extract, and vitamin C address age spots and enhance brightness, and hyaluronic acid promotes firmer, smoother-looking skin. If you’re looking for coverage, this is not your product—but we guarantee it makes anyone’s skin look instantly more beautiful. It’s so sheer that different shades work for many different skins; if you’re in doubt, try No. 2, which works for practically everyone who tries it.

Force Field Daily Defense Lotion with SPF 18

goop, $54

This lightweight, ultra-hydrating all-mineral SPF blends in so beautifully it’s truly unbelievable. Unscented and packed with skin-perfecting vitamins, it treats your skin while leaving it smooth and protected. Sinks into skin in seconds, feels incredible—this lotion is seriously the ultimate (easy) daily anti-ager.

All Good Kid’s Sunscreen Lotion SPF 33

goop, $16

Rituel de Fille Ethereal Veil Conceal & Cover

goop, $34

This easy-to-use pot concealer is super creamy and blends seamlessly into skin, leaving it even-looking and radiant. It’s thick and pigmented enough to really do the job, and the soft matte finish is incredibly natural-looking. Made with jojoba oil, frankincense, castor oil, and lanolin, it hydrates and soothes as it (brilliantly) erases spots, dark circles, and anything else you’d like to minimize. The shade range is fantastic, it travels brilliantly in a makeup bag, and whether applied with a brush or fingers, it’s truly genius.

RMS “Un” Cover-Up

goop, $36

While the natural mineral pigments and stay-put consistency are potent enough to stand on their own, this soothing, antioxidant-packed concealer stick blends beautifully with Vapour’s Soft Focus foundation—just match up the numbers to get the ideal shade pairing.

Above all, don’t ignore changes in your tween or teen’s skin. ”The psychological impact of problem skin is real,” says Wechsler. “Knowing that, and bearing in mind that everyone has to be patient at first—that no treatment is going to give you immediate changes—is important.” Sleep levels, stress levels, and a high-glycemic (lots of sugar) diet (Anolik mentions low- and non-fat milk specifically) can intensify or even trigger breakouts, depending on the person; family history plays a role, too. It takes a little time, but we’ll get there.

A Skin Care Routine For Teenagers

Gushing hormones, boyfriends, girlfriends, school, peer pressure and so much more. Ah, teen life is not easy! Teenagers have to deal with multiple emotions as it is, and a stressful skin condition is the last thing they want to worry about. That said, skin care for teens is the first step in their journey towards healthy and beautiful skin.

The desire to have flawless skin can make you anxious. But don’t worry! In this post, MomJunction shares a skincare regimen to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Let’s begin with the skin types.

What’s Your Skin Type?

Identifying the skin type correctly is crucial for developing the perfect skincare routine for you. Typically, the skin type is determined by genetics and the climatic conditions in the area.

Skin types are categorized into oily, normal, dry, and combination skin. Keep reading to know what your skin type is.

  1. Normal skin is even-toned, neither oily nor dry, and pores are barely visible. This type of skin has a balanced sebum production that keeps the skin healthy.
  1. Oily skin is acne-prone with visible pores and a shiny surface. This type of skin produces excessive sebum, which may sometimes lead to clogged pores.
  1. Dry skin is dull, patchy, parched, and sometimes itchy. Lack of sebum production and dehydration may also result in dry and flaky skin.
  1. Combination skin is when you have a mix of both oily and dry skin. People with a combination skin type often experience an oily T-zone, which includes the forehead and nose. The cheeks and chin remain dry.

Flawless skin is not entirely dependent on the DNA. Lifestyle, diet, and skincare routine also have an effect on the skin. Therefore, regardless of the skin type, you can improve their skin health with a healthy routine.

Skincare Routine For Teens: Four Simple Steps To Healthy Skin

Are you struggling to keep up with a skincare regimen? The foundation of flawless skin is a healthy skincare routine, which must be followed consistently. But how does one find time to develop a routine which is simple yet effective.

Here, we tell you about a basic skincare routine for teens.

The primary step of skincare is to cleanse the skin thoroughly. No matter what your skin type is, choose a cleanser with mild ingredients that will not rip off the essential oils from your skin. An oil-based cleanser is ideal for night time when you need to get rid of the excessive sweat, makeup, dirt, or grime from the skin. It should be followed up with a soap-free foam cleanser. For the morning routine, you can choose a gentle foam-based cleanser.

The second step is to use a toner that helps in the shrinking of large pores. The toner cleans and closes the pores, and rejuvenates the skin. Choose the toner carefully and avoid the ones that may contain alcohol and other chemical ingredients that could harm the skin. You may consider buying toners made of plant-based ingredients that are safe and gentle on the skin.

The next step is to lock in all the moisture with the help of a hydrating and nourishing moisturizer. A moisturizer is like food for the skin, so choose one that is light and oil-free. The ideal moisturizer is the one that suits your skin type and helps in maintaining the right moisture levels in the skin.

The final step in your skin care is to wear sunblock. A good habit for life is to protect the skin from the harsh UV rays of the sun. Rain or shine, sunscreen is a must. If you are into sports and stay outdoors often, buy a sunscreen with SPF more than 35. If you spend most time indoors, one with SPF of 15 is good enough.

A skincare routine may not be one-size-fits-all and varies from one person to another. It depends on a lot of aspects such as weather conditions, age, time of the day, and lifestyle. However, these four steps are the basis for any skin care routine and can be customized as per the requirements of your skin type.

Keep reading as we tell you why every teenager needs a good skincare regimen.

Benefits Of A Good Skincare Regime

No amount of designer wear or fancy shoes can hide damaged skin, because the face is the first thing that people notice. A good skincare routine plays a significant role in promoting healthy skin, in spite of the hormonal changes that you go through at this age.

Also, building a skincare regime proves fruitful in the long run. Some benefits of teenage skin care are discussed below.

  1. Keeps skin clean and fresh: An everyday skincare ritual ensures that the skin is clean and feels fresh all the time. It removes all the dirt and grime, unclogs pores and eliminates the dead skin.
  1. Reduces stress: Healthy and glowing skin boosts an individual’s confidence. This helps in reducing stress levels and strengthens the skin’s immune system as well.
  1. Delays aging: Research suggests that a good skincare regime is beneficial in delaying the aging process (1). The earlier one starts, the better it is. Pollution, fast-paced lifestyles and the lack of nutritious food can cause a lot of damage to the skin inside and out, even for teenagers. A skincare regime helps in combating these problems and delays the signs of aging.
  1. Keeps your skin hydrated: The importance of hydration and moisturizing cannot be stressed enough. Drinking enough water helps in maintaining the elasticity of your skin and keeping it healthy.

The skin is the largest barrier against infections or diseases. A good skincare regime also helps in keeping this protective layer on our body safe.

Skincare Tips For Teens

It is hard but not impossible to deal with raging hormones and take care of skin at the same time. Here are a few skincare tips for teens to use.

  1. Do you know how many times you touch the face during the day? You may not keep a count of it, because most of the time, you do it unknowingly. So to avoid scars and prevent more pimples from popping up, try to keep your hands away from your face. Also, keep your nails clipped.

If you have acne-prone skin, then picking or popping pimples on the face is also a strict no-no, no matter how badly you want to get rid of them. Instead, consult a dermatologist for treatment of active acne.

  1. Water therapy works wonders for all skin types. Water contains nutrients that are good for your overall health. It helps in detoxifying and keeping the gut clean, which reflects on your skin. Ideally, a person must drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
  1. Exfoliating once a week helps in the removal of dead skin and blackheads. It also makes the skin soft and supple. Take extra care during exfoliation or scrubbing the skin, especially if your skin is sensitive or you have pimples. Avoid chemical-laden exfoliating agents; stick to gentle scrubs.
  1. A balanced diet that includes raw fruits, veggie salads, and healthy juices can nourish the skin. The more colorful your plate, the better it is. Just make sure you don’t include any foods that you are allergic to.
  1. Cleansing, toning, and moisturizing are three steps which you must include in your morning and night skincare routines. This helps in maintaining your skin’s good health.
  1. Keep the makeup minimal and avoid products with harsh chemicals. Sometimes makeup products damage the skin further. Therefore, buy lightweight products which are safe and do not forget to perform a patch test before applying anything on the face.
  1. Do not go to bed without removing the makeup. You may be tired and exhausted after a long day at school or college, but you must take the makeup off before hitting the sack. Sleeping with makeup on is inviting various skin infections.

It takes ten minutes or less to take off the makeup and cleanse the face thoroughly. Using makeup removal wipes makes the job even easier.

  1. A smile is an accessory which enhances beauty. Your lips are a part of your face and must not be ignored during the skincare regimen. Every once in a while, scrubbing the lips is important. After that, use a nourishing lip balm to moisturize them. Avoid wearing lipsticks that may dry and crack your lips.
  1. Sunblock is a must. Wearing sunscreen with a good SPF helps our skin combat the damage that the UV rays cause. Choose a sunscreen based on your activities for the day and apply it at least 30 minutes before heading out.
  1. Sleep is equally important. Did you know, the skin repairs itself while we are asleep? Our body calms down, and the skin rejuvenates itself during your sleep. Therefore, you must get enough sleep, at least eight to nine hours, every night.

Teenage Skin Care Routine for Acne & Oily Skin

Your teenage years can be particularly difficult to navigate; between a budding social agenda, extracurricular activities, and striving for academic success, your stress levels may increase and your skin may go through some not-so-cute changes. So why not help relieve some of that stress by addressing some of those pesky skin ailments! Below, we discuss some common skin concerns of the modern teenager, and how to help manage them.

Acne Blemishes

Acne blemishes are a common skin issue that many teenagers may experience at one point or another. They can be caused by a change in hormones which may result in the overproduction of oil and sebum. When too much oil and sebum is produced, the excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria can plug up your skin’s pores.1 Additionally, dead skin cells can attach themselves to clogged pores, which may also result in acne, so try to incorporate exfoliation into your skin care routine.

Blackheads

Blackheads can occur when your skin’s pores become clogged with dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria. When clogged pores are exposed to air, they oxidize and become black.2

Oily Skin

The appearance of shiny skin—without the help of cosmetics—may be a sign of excess oil. If you notice the appearance of shiny, oily skin, you may find that makeup tends to “slip” off of your skin over time. Typically, people with oily skin note that their skin sometimes only feels clean right after a thorough cleansing.

How to Address Teenage Skin

1. Cleanse Daily

Teenage skin should be cleansed daily to avoid a build-up of oil, skin cells, and sebum on the skin’s surface. This build-up can wreak havoc on your skin. Use a gentle cleanser formulated with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to help keep skin clear of new acne blemishes. Be sure to keep skin clean, moisturized and always apply SPF.

2. Exfoliate

Dead skin cells can accumulate on the surface of skin and may cause pores to become clogged, so removing them on a regular basis by exfoliating your skin’s surface should become a part of your skin care routine. Try to avoid scrubbing with products that have harsh, grainy textures or products that are formulated with sand or crystals, as these can irritate your skin. Use a product formulated with glycolic acid, which can help to remove dead skin cells and lower the chances of blocking your skin’s pores.

3. Tone

Using a toner in your daily skin care routine can help with removing excess oil from your skin’s surface, which will help to keep your skin appear clearer. After cleansing your skin, use a gentle toner to help remove any lingering excess oil.

4. Moisturize

No matter how oily your skin feels, it needs to be moisturized. Moisturizing should be a part of your regular skin routine in both mornings and evenings. Look for a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer to help hydrate your skin. Remember: it’s very important to use a product with SPF 15 or higher to help protect your skin from sun damage. Always protect your skin when you are outdoors.

5. Clay Masks

Try to use a clay mask once or twice a week to help remove excess oil and impurities from your skin’s surface. Some clay masks may also help reduce the appearance of visible pores. Your skin can feel soft, clean and revitalized. This is a great staple in your beauty arsenal for those days you want a deep-feeling clean.

While teenage skin may be difficult, with the right skin care regimen acne can be easily managed.

What to Use, How to Start

Your skin’s got bounce, glow, and a Wolverine-like ability to rejuvenate itself. It’s also seeing the first signs of bumps, pimples, and oiliness. So what to use (and what to avoid) and how to get started? Here, our guide to a teen’s first skincare routine.

When it comes to skincare in your teens, it’s a rollercoaster. In some ways, things are less complicated. Because young skin has that undeniable bounce and plumpness all of us old-heads are coveting, you needn’t worry about endless concoctions and serum cocktails chasing what comes naturally for teens. However, there are other battles you have to contend with as a newbie to skincare.

Adults generally have a pretty good idea which ingredients play nicely with our skin, which are just meh, and which evil little devils send it screaming. As a teenager you don’t have the benefit of years of experience; everything is new and therefore everything is a potential foe. On the bright side, everything is also a potential ally. This is your time to experiment, however, let’s make sure to experiment safely.

When it comes to a teen’s first skincare routine, keep it as mild and bare bones as possible. Korean beauty’s entire philosophy is framed around healthy, beautiful skin. A skin’s health is of utmost importance and achieving that through a multi-step routine is the way to go about it. However, gradual introduction of products is key here. Slow and steady wins the race, and in this case, slow and steady keeps the odds of identifying a potential irritant or allergy in your favor.

In general, here are the basics of a teen’s first skincare routine:

1. Double cleansing

2. Hydrating toner

3. Emulsion or cream

4. Sunscreen

Now let’s get into the details one by one.

Sunscreen, your most important step

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to great Korean sunscreens

For a teen, a good sunscreen, one that you will actually wear and use, is of utmost importance. UVB rays can cause nasty burns and even cataracts. UVA rays are particularly nasty, messing with your DNA and potentially causing cancer and other diseases. From a vanity standpoint, it’s also the top cause of premature aging. Prevent cancer and photoaging by dedicating yourself to a lifetime of sunscreen.

Korean sunscreens are awesome, because many of them don’t smell like typical western sunscreens, and their formulas are elegant and a pleasure to wear. Buy several to find which one you like. (Read about one of our favorites here.) It won’t matter how awesome it is if you don’t actually wear it.

Oh, and makeup that has an SPF is no substitute for a dedicated sunscreen: You need to be applying at least a quarter sized dollop of sunscreen for it to work properly, and that is way too much product to use for foundation. When it comes to sunscreen, I myself apply a cherry sized amount to the face and neck. I would give anything to be able to go back in time and be as fastidious about sunscreen application back in my teens as I am now. I could have saved myself a terrifying time getting cancer removed from the tops of my ear and prevented a helluva lot of sun damage to my skin.

Cleansers

Some of our fave cleansers

Double cleansing is a must, as it’s the only thing that can properly remove your makeup and sunscreen. (Read why and how here.) Double cleansing consists of first using an oil-based cleanser, and then following up with a regular foaming cleanser. Breakouts are always a concern with teenage skin and the proper removal of sunscreen and makeup will go a long way when it comes to prevention. Remember, you only need to double cleanse after wearing sunscreen or makeup; you don’t always need to do it. For the mornings, simply washing your face with your regular cleanser is all you need.

Now onto foaming cleansers. I urge you to read this story on why a low pH cleanser is the only way to go. Once you’re done reading up on the importance of selecting a low pH cleanser, it’s time to look for one that’s best for you. It is important to keep in mind that a “squeaky clean” face is not the goal here. That squeak is dryness and indicative of stripped skin. Keeping our moisture is the goal, always. Your skin should feel soft and hydrated after cleansing, never dry and squeaky, and a low pH cleanser will help ensure that.

Toners

Discover your new HG toner

Moms of teens will remember that back in their day, a toner was usually a high alcohol content, tingly, burning affair that was used in the hopes of sopping up excess oil. Not only is that completely not what you’re looking for here, it’s actually very harmful to teenage skin. Absorbing excess oil is fine, but it’s the burning and tingling you want to avoid. Tingling does not equal working; it equals irritation. Minimizing irritation is a must, as irritation can lead to acne and completely throw your skin’s health out of whack.

The aim of toners in Korean beauty is to soften, prepare the skin for treatment, and to hydrate. So if you change your way of thinking about toners and what they should be doing, you’ll understand why they are often referred to as “softeners” by Korean companies.

Acids, Acne & Exfoliation

Moksha Dear Orange Jam Scrub

I was asked if it was safe for teens to get into the world of acids, and I have to preface everything I say with I AM NOT A DOCTOR. I can give you my opinion, but I strongly urge you to visit with a dermatologist to get the lowdown on what they think is an appropriate course of treatment for a teenager. And even with derms, you’re going to get a variety of answers — I’ve heard it all over the years.

With that being said, in my opinion, salicylic acid, BHA, and mild AHA use is just fine for teens. BHAs and AHAs are the best topical treatments for most mild acne. It’s not recommended that topical salicylic acid be applied before the age of 2, and well, you’re clearly in the safe zone by your teens. What’s really handy in Korean beauty is there is a variety of naturally derived AHAs and BHAs that are milder than many over-the-counter western acne products. COSRX comes to mind here as they have willow bark derived BHAs in their BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, which is an excellent choice to fights blackheads and mild acne in sensitive skin.

Keeping your skin well-hydrated and moisturized is your first line of defense when it comes to acne, so let’s avoid harsh products that will dry the skin out too much. When it comes to acids you want to start out as mild as possible and work your way up to stronger. And honestly, in your teen years, if you’re in need of a strong acid you’re probably better under a dermatologist’s care.

In general, teenage skin does a pretty good job of exfoliating itself, so you most likely do not need a manual exfoliator. If you see flakes, that’s a sign that you need hydration, not a scrub. It’s easy to overdo it when it comes to scrubs, as refreshing as they can feel. If you really, really want to use one, make sure you do it no more than once a week, or more like twice a month. Again, I’m speaking in terms of normal to mild acneic skin; more complicated cases need to consult a dermatologist.

Depending on if your skin is oily or on the normal to dry side, either a cream or an emulsion is on the table. For oily skin, an emulsion is probably going to be enough hydration. There are also gel creams, which offer the best of both worlds and are especially refreshing in the summer time. A typical face cream may feel entirely too heavy and probably should be avoided except in intensely dry and cold weather conditions. (I say that as someone who regularly deals with winter temps of -40, so unless that’s your reality or you’re an avid skier, you can probably do without.)

Korean beauty has some really awesome emulsions and lotions that offer light hydration. Remember, oily doesn’t mean hydrated; those are two different things, so don’t avoid lotion altogether just because you’re oily. You can, however, avoid application on your T-zone, which is well-lubricated by sebum if you’re oily. For normal to dry skin types, you have the option of just a cream or an emulsion and cream combo if you really need the moisture (think winter and dry climates).

How to start your routine

Now that I’ve laid out all the steps, let’s talk introduction, as in when to introduce each product. With every new product, use it for at least three weeks before introducing a new one. That may sound like an overly cautious approach, but it’s a sound one. We do it this way so that if you do have a bad or even allergic reaction to a product, we know exactly who the culprit was. Otherwise you’re just throwing a dart in the dark at five products and just guessing at who the bad guy was.

If you notice a negative reaction to a product, immediately discontinue use and do not continue on for the remaining time. After a bad reaction, a great tip is to then look up the product on the COSDNA website. There you can find a breakdown of each ingredient and its likelihood to cause irritation or acne. This is an excellent resource when you’re just starting out and are trying to find out what your skin dislikes. You can’t know for sure without allergy testing, but you can get a pretty good idea what the likely culprit was this way. You can also have the information on hand to show a dermatologist what exactly you were using so that they can know which allergies to test for if needed.

Here is a full visual guide on the 3 step, 5 step, and 10 step routines which will teach you about when to use what.

Keeping it simple

This doesn’t always hold true, but keeping it simple, ingredients-wise, is usually a safe approach if for no other reason than minimizing the exposure to potential bad reactions. It’s also easier if you’re not dealing with 30 ingredients when you need to whittle down what might be the cause of something. It’s also easier to identify things that you love. For instance, I love camellia oil and all of its offshoots, so I actively seek products with that ingredient in mind.

Form good habits

There are little things teenagers can get in the habit of that will go a long way to preventing acne and keeping the skin in excellent shape. Something as simple as changing your pillowcase once a week can help prevent breakouts. Cleaning your phone’s screen is another thing. Think of all the oily fingerprints and gunk that builds up on the surface of a phone. That stuff transfers onto your fingers, which end up on your face throughout the course of the day. It’s especially nasty if you use it for a phone call, pressing all of those oil and germs into the side of your face. So keep your hands and phone clean and keep both away from your face as much as possible.

Finally, get into the habit of always doing your entire skincare routine, even if you’re exhausted. The sooner you start, the happier your skin will be and the easier it will be for it to become second nature to you.

Forming good skincare habits now will go a long way when it comes to a lifetime of beautiful, healthy skin, and there is no better way to do that than with a Korean beauty based philosophy and routine.

5 Things A Teenage Girl Must Know About Skin Care Routine

5 Things A Teenage Girl Must Know About Skin Care Routine

There are many types of skin-related problems in teenagers, to get rid of them, teenage girls should follow the routine of skincare.

The biggest problem in teenagers is the problem related to the skin. Due to changes in hormones in teenage girls, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads start appearing on the face, which leaves marks on the face. Given such issues, your skin starts to look dull. To avoid any such problems, teenage girls need to follow their skincare routine. Let us know what kind of skincare routine in teenagers can maintain the beauty of your skin.

1. Understand the problem of pimples

Acne problem tops the list of skin issues, teenage girls face.

Usually acne, blackheads affect oily skin more. Pimples and acne break out very quickly due to excess oil on oily skin, which tops the list of skin complaints of teenage girls. Changes in hormones cause the oil glands to expand, making the skin of teenage girls more oily, which is why blackheads start to appear on their faces. By the way, acne is common during puberty as hormones go into overdrive. To stay away from acne wash your skin properly with freshwater, use a good toner and then a medicated acne gel that suits your skin. If you have a severe acne problem then it is best to consult a dermatologist before using any medicine.

2. Cleanse the skin thoroughly

In case you have applied makeup on the skin, then you should remove the makeup properly. If you do not clean your skin properly, then the side effects of makeup can make the skin look lifeless. By the way, the skin is very delicate in teens, so apply as little makeup as possible. You can use a good cleanser or raw milk to clean the skin.

3. Don’t forget to moisturize

Good moisturizer nourishes the skin

Moisturizing the skin is very important for you, even if you have oily skin, you should still use a good moisturizer that works for you. The use of moisturizer protects the skin from dullness and maintains the beauty of the skin.

4. Use sunscreen

As sunscreen protects the skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun hence if you start including sunscreen in your routine skincare sooner, it will help you maintain better collagen levels as you age. You should pick a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a higher SPF and apply it to your skin as directed before you go out in the sun.

5. Do not use anti-aging cream

Surely you don’t need anti-aging cream when you are young. Anti-aging creams can make the skin look dull and make you look older. Its use from an early age can cause allergies. Often this damages the skin, which can lead to more acne inflammation, scarring, and dryness.

By following your skincare routine from adolescence, you will not have any kind of skin-related problems in the future.

How to take care of the face of adolescents [features of problem skin care]

Features of adolescent skin

Cosmetologists say that the human epidermis is fully formed by the age of 11-12 – some a little earlier, some a little later. According to the recommendations of professionals, from 13-14 years old, a child can legally be transferred to basic “adult” care, taking into account some of the features that are characteristic of young skin.

First of all, this is an increased level of fat content – due to hormonal maturation of the body, the sebaceous glands of young skin work more actively. If the skin is oily, there is a high probability of encountering the problem of acne or acne, which requires a solution with the help of special care.

If, on the whole, the skin is problem-free, and single rashes appear once a month according to the cycle (in girls), then special cosmetics can be kept ready only for such periods and used as needed. This set may include a foam for problem-prone skin, an appropriate toner, a film mask, a topical treatment against imperfections.

If there are no permanent rashes on the teenager’s skin, just good hydration is enough. © Getty Images

The rest of the time you can enjoy the absence of problems (related to the skin) and take care of your face with products to cleanse and moisturize combination and normal skin. They do not degrease or dry it out. At the same time, they have a light enough texture so as not to provoke clogged pores.

What does the daily skin care of a teenager consist of

Already at a young age, it is important to form the basic rules of skin care and then adhere to them throughout your life: cleanse – moisturize – protect. It also makes sense to immediately familiarize yourself with additional care products – cleansing and moisturizing masks and scrubs.

Cleansing

  • Cleansing should be gentle on the one hand, and high-quality on the other.

  • It is important that the product foams well and rinses off easily. Soothing, softening and refreshing ingredients are welcome in its composition. A small content of exfoliating components is acceptable, but in general there is no special need for acids (in the absence of acne). Gel or foam – optimal formats.

  • As we know, you need to wash yourself twice a day, not more and not less often. The sooner a novice beauty user acquires this habit, the better. To help – pleasant and useful products from L’Oréal Paris.

When combined with water, it turns into a light, delicate foam, cleanses the conscience of impurities and sebum, while softening and refreshing the skin. Contains soothing rose extract, moisturizing lotus extract, cooling menthol.

We advise you to read:

Toning

Using a tonic after washing is another good habit, which, however, is not always followed even by adults, but in vain. The toner completes the cleansing phase and usually helps the skin restore its pH balance after washing, softens it, refreshes it, and also removes impurities, which is especially important when it comes to teenage skin that requires an especially thorough cleansing.

Infinite Freshness Toner for normal to combination skin, L’Oréal Paris

A perfect match for the same line of cleansing gel: refreshes, softens, contains a small percentage of exfoliating ingredients.

We advise you to read:

Humidification

For daily moisturizing care, products with a light texture and composition that increase the skin’s barrier-protective forces are optimal.Oil nourishing cream is not needed for young skin. Gel, cream-gel, fluid based on hydrates (glycerin, aloe, hyaluronic acid) are the favorite moisturizing products of young skin.

You can use the same moisturizing treatment before bed, or purchase a separate night care product.

Aquafluid for the face for normal to combination skin “The genius of hydration”, L’Oréal Paris

Liquid watery product based on moisturizing ingredients, aloe juice and hyaluronic acid, also contains soothing panthenol. On contact with the skin, it is quickly absorbed and provides a moisturizing effect for 72 hours. Masks

You can safely choose any of the masks from the popular L’Oréal Paris “Magic of Clay” series.

We recommend trying the novelty “The Magic of Clay. How to achieve “perfect” facial skin for a teenager

A separate article is devoted to teenage skin care. Here we would like to draw your attention to two points:

  • follow the reaction of the skin to this or that remedy and select the optimal one – there is no universal cosmetics ideal for everyone;

  • in case of acne, multiple acne and inflammatory elements on the face of a teenager, do not self-medicate and do not expect pimples to go away on their own (this is an unlikely scenario in the near future), seek help from a dermatologist who will prescribe special care and help quickly and without consequences to solve this unpleasant, albeit typical problem of adolescent skin.

How does the skin change by the age of 60?

Several signs of skin changes at the age of 60:

• The skin becomes thinner and more fragile.
• As the skin ages, cell renewal slows down, reducing the skin’s natural radiance and leading to the accumulation of dry, dead cells on the skin’s surface.
• The top layer of the skin, the epidermis, becomes thinner and more translucent, slightly resembling textured paper, with wrinkles becoming much more visible.
• After menopause, the skin produces less oil, which makes it difficult to maintain skin hydration and leads to dry skin.
• The production of natural collagen and elastin in the skin decreases, which leads to a loss of firmness, elasticity and contributes to the strengthening of existing wrinkles and the appearance of new ones.
• Sufficiently large age spots may appear on areas of the skin most exposed to sunlight.
• Signs of ptosis begin to appear: the oval of the face changes, its lower third begins to sag due to the loss of collagen and a decrease in skin density.

What makes good skin care at 60?

To combat the effects of skin aging, a regular regimen with gentle cleansing , enhanced hydration and sun protection is more important than ever.

Cleansing
The surface of the skin is composed of fatty acids, which are essential to maintain the water barrier. Some cleansers can remove natural grease, which can lead to increased moisture loss. So choose a delicate cleanser. When you cleanse your skin, make sure to use a cleanser that leaves your skin hydrated.

Moisturizing
Moisturize your skin daily, especially immediately after cleansing, to restore the skin’s moisture barrier.Choose moisturizers that contain ingredients that will help relieve dry skin. Choose SPF day creams to protect your skin from UV damage. And choose night creams that contain ingredients like retinol to support the structural elements of the skin like collagen and elastin.

Sun Protection
During this phase of your life, you still need to protect your skin. Skin becomes more delicate as we age, so it is more important than ever to protect it from sun damage.

Complementary Products

Gentle Exfoliation – is a key step to remove dead skin cells that can dull skin and interfere with skin hydration.
• Use the serum with peptides , which support the production of especially collagen and elastin.
Vitamin C and Niacinamide (B3) help to even out skin tone.

Solution
Daily Care: Use TimeWise Repair Anti-Aging System ® as your regular skin care kit. With an incredibly rich and gentle foaming cleanser, a peptide-based serum that helps restore the triangle of youth, a daytime moisturizer with a broad spectrum SPF, a nighttime moisturizer with retinol and an eye cream aimed at reducing wrinkles and increasing firmness, you get wonderful care that returns the youthful appearance to the skin!
Exfoliate: Use Revealing Radiance ™ Facial Peel with Glycolic Acid and an advanced exfoliating formula that leaves skin more radiant, improves texture and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.
Skin Tone Serums: Use TimeWise C + E Regenerating Serum ® for firming and radiant skin with vitamins C and E or Time Wise ® Skin Tone Correcting Serum with Brightening Complex 1 Perfectly Bright ® , based on pioneer white kidney bean extract, niacinamide and algae extract.

Care tip: Take care of the skin around the eyes

Thin skin around the eyes needs moisturizers containing certain peptides that support collagen and elastin production, which help reduce wrinkles around the eyes, and soothing herbal extracts to maintain the required moisture level. If you are not using a specially shaped metal ergonomic applicator, apply a small amount of cream, the size of a pea, on your ring finger, then massage the cream with the pad of your ring finger.

What do you recommend for a beautiful aging at the age of 60?

Make sun protection part of your daily routine. Even if your goal is not to make your skin look younger or to use anti-aging products, people with mature skin should continue to use C SPF.Sun protection helps reduce your risk of skin cancer, so it’s important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.

Don’t forget about the neck and décolleté! The skin throughout the body is prone to aging, but those areas that are most often exposed to the sun are especially affected. While applying skin care products to your face, you can also apply them to your neck to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, sagging skin, and improve skin firmness. Be sure to check with your beauty consultant which skin care products are suitable for your neck and décolleté area.

What is the best way to deal with age spots?

Usually the appearance of age spots indicates that the skin has been severely damaged by the sun. If you’re looking for a quick fix, then you can use concealer and foundation to hide them.

White Kidney Beans, Niacinamide and Vitamin C help reduce uneven skin tone, enhancing radiance and an even complexion. Skin care products containing retinol can help minimize age spots by increasing the rate of skin cell turnover.Care should be taken, however, as using high concentrations of retinol can cause discomfort, so be sure to follow the recommended directions for use.

Solution:
• Foundations: TimeWise 3D ™ Radiant Foundation is a great option as it provides 12 hours of hydration and the lightweight finish masks all imperfections. Use with Perfecting Concealer ™ to mask age spots, blemishes and minor skin blemishes.
• Brightening Serums: Products such as Time Wise Serum ® or TimeWise C + E Regenerating Serum ® help to visibly improve the appearance of skin and reduce the appearance of age spots.
• Retinol based skin care: Volu-Firm ™ retinol night cream, thanks to encapsulated retinol, activates the process of skin cell renewal, stimulates collagen production and helps to increase its elasticity.

I still get acne at 60 years old. How to get rid of them?

Teenage acne is mainly caused by hormones, and in adults, stress and hormones are the main triggers for acne. After menopause hormonal imbalances can contribute to acne. In addition, stress leads to the production of androgenic hormones and cortisol, which activate the sebaceous glands, producing excess sebum, which aggravates acne. You may be tempted to use acne treatments designed for oily teenage skin, but mature skin is drier and cannot tolerate these treatments. Look for products containing Salicylic Acid , which will help unclog pores without drying out your skin. If your acne persists, consider making an appointment with a dermatologist to address the issue.

How to make wrinkles less visible, especially around the lips?

Although the aging process is inevitable and leads to the appearance of wrinkles, you can take steps to minimize this process. With age, wrinkles become more pronounced on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the lips. Purse wrinkles – fine vertical lines around the lips – are the result of simple movements such as smiling and laughing, which can stretch the skin, resulting in noticeable wrinkles over time. In addition, lifestyle factors such as smoking and sun exposure can significantly increase the likelihood of wrinkling around the lips. To reduce visible wrinkles around the lips, simply intensify your daily skincare in this area.

Solution:
• Lip Care: Dry skin can exacerbate the appearance of fine lines, making age lines on and around the lips deeper and more visible, so be sure to use the Satin Shea Butter Lip Care System Lips ® White Tea & Citrus . Use a sugar scrub to gently exfoliate dead skin cells, then apply Shea Butter Balm to nourish and moisturize your lips.
• Lip Primer: Use TimeWise Anti-Aging Lip Care ® to reduce fine lines on and around the lips.

I have noticed that my skin becomes drier with age. What’s the best way to keep it hydrated?

As we age, the skin becomes thinner and more susceptible to moisture loss and external irritants. When taking a bath or shower, be sure to use warm, not hot, water.Hot water can strip the natural oil from the skin, which can contribute to dryness. Apply a moisturizer formulated specifically for dry skin at least twice a day to help moisturize skin, and use some facial oil throughout the day to give skin a healthy glow.

Solution:
Mild Cleanser: Use a mild cleanser such as Volu-Firm ™ Cleansing Foam , which is designed for gentle cleansing.Moisture-infused lather thoroughly cleanses your face while helping to retain natural lipids, so your skin doesn’t look dehydrated or dry.
Moisturizer for Your Skin Type: If you have dry skin, try moisturizing with Mary Kay Intense Moisturizer ® .
Facial Oil: To revitalize your skin and give it a feeling of hydration and nutrition, try Mary Kay Naturally ™ Nourishing Oil.

90,000 Neck and décolleté care: beauty routine for beauty maintenance – LAMBRE

Passport age is given by arms, neck and décolleté.And if hand cream is one of the favorites in a woman’s cosmetic bag, neck care is often forgotten. What cosmetics are needed for this area, are there such products in the Lambre collection and at what age should they be used? We talk about this, and also remind you what affects the laxity of the skin of the neck and what care rules will help you not to worry about it as long as possible.

Care of the neck and décolleté: why so thoroughly?

The skin in the neck and décolleté area ages earlier than the skin on the face. Major Issues:

1) dryness.There are few sebaceous glands in this area, cells quickly lose moisture;
2) wrinkles and sagging tissues. The reason is the underdeveloped layer of subcutaneous fat;
3) laxity of the neck. All due to poor blood circulation, which is aggravated by improper posture and the habit of looking at the screen of gadgets with your head down. The production of elastin and collagen deteriorates, the skin loses its elasticity;
4) coarsening. The skin cells in this area contain few melanocytes, which protect against ultraviolet radiation. If you don’t wear sunscreen, your neck will be inadequate.

Wrinkles on the neck and décolleté look different: in the first case, these are the so-called “rings of Venus” and “chicken strands”, and in the second – creases. But the solution is one: make neck care a habit as early as possible. And it’s not just about applying creams.

How to care for your neck: basic rules

Let’s list the key rules of neck care.

• Start as early as possible.Removing wrinkles in the décolleté area at home is much more difficult than slowing down their appearance. Age-related changes in this area appear from the age of 25. Remember to take care of her with the same care as your face.

• Use special products to care for the décolleté and neck area. At a young age, cleansing formulas, peels, moisturizers and serums are enough. Intensive care will be needed to slow aging. These are anti-aging creams with a lifting effect that plump the skin, prevent sagging, reduce the depth of horizontal creases and lighten pigmentation. An ordinary cream is not capable of such feats.

• Don’t be limited to one cream. Complete care for the décolleté and neck area includes cleansing, toning, peeling, serums and masks.

• Apply beauty products correctly. Cosmetics for the care of the neck and décolleté are applied from the bottom up, without pressure. Massage is done from the center to the periphery, avoiding the area of the thyroid gland.

• Monitor your posture and posture while you sleep. If you constantly slouch, read while lying down and sleep on a pillow that is too high, no neck and décolleté cream can cope with wrinkles, sagging and tightness.

Décolleté and Neck Daily Care: 7 Steps

In this section, we offer a step-by-step guide to caring for your décolleté and neck skin.

1. In the morning, use a mild cleanser such as milk. This will help remove any residual cream that you used overnight, as well as accumulated sebum particles.

2. Wipe your neck with the toner that suits your skin type.

3. Apply the cream to the décolleté and neck area, spreading it lightly from the chest to the shoulders and from the collarbones upwards.

4. In warmer months, when the neck is not covered with a turtleneck sweater or scarf, use sunscreen or daytime with an SPF filter.

5. Cleansing time in the evening, especially if you apply foundation and powder to your neck. Micellar water, milk, wash gel – the choice is yours.

6. Finish the cleansing with toning so that the skin recovers its pH faster and better absorbs the active ingredients from the cream.

7. Skin care for décolleté and neck skin will be more effective if you use an anti-aging serum.Apply to cleansed skin and allow to absorb. Then the turn of the cream.

Frequency of applying a mask for the neck and décolleté from wrinkles at home – at least once a week. Complete your neck care with a peel or scrub once every two weeks. This will help remove the layer of dead cells and activate skin renewal.

This is the basic scheme for the care of the neck and décolleté, the habit of adhering to such a beauty routine is half the battle. The choice of cosmetics and additional supporting procedures depends on the age and condition of the skin.

How to care for your neck after 30-35

This is the period when neck care can no longer be ignored. Otherwise, every year it will contrast more and more with the face.

• Remember that the neck and décolleté are one space where facial treatments should end.
• Do not expect that after 45 the situation will be corrected by one visit to the beautician. The neck is a difficult area to correct; the décolleté should also be taken care of regularly.
• The main focus is the fight against flabbiness.Swap out a light décolleté moisturizer for a rich, nourishing one.
• Do not neglect sun protection to keep the skin from loss of tone and dehydration.

For effective care of the neck and décolleté in the Lambre collection there is a special cream from the Pearl Line series. It contains natural pearl extract, which is rich in strengthening substances and stimulates cell renewal. It contains almond oil for firmness, elasticity, a natural analogue of hyaluronic acid Hyalurosmooth for deep hydration and smoothing of wrinkles, vitamin B3 to activate collagen production in cells and reduce age spots.

If you love to read in bed since childhood, and now you have replaced the book with a smartphone, immediately get rid of the habit. It is thanks to her that the term “techno-neck” appeared, when flabbiness and creases are formed ahead of time, and double chins “settle” on the face of even young girls. Keep your phone and tablet at eye level without lowering your head to your chest. Prevention is one of the main rules in caring for the décolleté and neck area.

Peels, creams and masks for the neck after 40-45 years

After 40, connect an extended arsenal of beauty products to regular care for your neck and décolleté.

1. Peelings with fruit acids. They gently exfoliate, help cells renew themselves more actively, thereby eliminating the signs of photoaging and preventing sagging of the skin on the neck.

2. Serums. Choose rejuvenating formulas with vitamins A, C and E (powerful antioxidants), hyaluronic acid (helps maintain optimal hydration levels), collagen (plumps the skin), amino acids (reduces the depth of wrinkles). Please note that a high-quality serum does not replace cream, it is a separate stage in the care of the neck and décolleté.

3. Cream for the neck and décolleté is a must. In addition, sun protection before going outside, at any time of the year, if the neck is not protected by clothing.

4. Masks. Apply at least once a week, you can alternate products with different active ingredients and functions. This is one of the most effective techniques for caring for the décolleté and neck area, do not neglect the possibilities of masks.

5. Massage. 10-15 minutes a day will give amazing results. Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to train the neck muscles; due to improper posture, most of us are in hypertonicity. Therefore, the main task of the massage is to relax the neck and work out the platysma, which forms strands and “lowers” the flews even more.

Anti-wrinkle neck and decollete masks at home

Still using mood masks? Make a schedule for these beauty treatments, do not miss the appointed days – the result will not be long in coming.

Which masks to choose?

• Moisturizing and nourishing face masks can and should be used for neck care. For example, the Lambre O2 Bubble Face Mask will saturate cells with oxygen, improve microcirculation, strengthen the protective barrier and increase resistance to photoaging. Lambre Face Care masks with natural 24-carat gold, black caviar, plant extracts and vitamin complexes stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, help get rid of sagging and reduce the depth of wrinkles.

• Laxity of the skin on the neck is well “tightened” by plasticizing (alginate masks). They are sold in the form of a powder, which is diluted with water to the desired thickness, applied to the neck and décolleté in a thick layer, allowed the mass to solidify and removed in a single layer. It is difficult to do this on your own at home, therefore, such cosmetics are often used in beauty salons.

• Masks of oatmeal, sour cream, honey, banana, potatoes and other folk recipes to remove wrinkles in the décolleté area at home is impossible. But they can be made for additional nutrition.

Any mask should be applied after peeling with Lambre Pure Therapy AHA acids, this will strengthen the effect. While the mask works, it is best to lie down to relax your neck muscles. Then rinse off with water at room temperature. The skin will be nourished with a beautiful velvet finish.

Neck and décolleté care after 50

Cosmetics with anti-aging properties smooths wrinkles on the neck and décolleté. When the effect seems insufficient, cosmetology procedures are connected to consolidate the result.

Biorevitalization courses help deliver active ingredients to the deep layers of the skin.RF therapy (radio wave lifting), ultrasonic lifting, laser resurfacing are aimed at working with the structure of collagen fibers and the production of new ones, increasing turgor. Superficial fillers are used to fill the “rings of Venus”, and botox and dysport are used to relax platysma. Mesothreads create a framework through bio-reinforcement, this eliminates sagging.

It is important to understand that no procedure guarantees the result “once and for all”, for example, injections have to be repeated in courses at regular intervals. Therefore, regular home care for the décolleté and neck is always more effective than chaotic visits to the beautician’s office.

How to remove wrinkles in the decollete area at home – summarize

Let’s start with the fact that warning is much easier, therefore:

• sleep on your back. Choose a pillow that is not too tall and fits you anatomically. The wrong sleeping posture will be “imprinted” at once with creases on your neck and décolleté;

• Monitor the posture and health of the spine, especially the cervical spine.Constant loads on the lowered head lead to hypertonicity of platysma, laxity of the neck and longitudinal strands on it, as well as ptosis – the prolapse of facial tissues.

How to care for your neck to smooth out the formed wrinkles and delay the appearance of new ones?

• High quality cosmetics. This does not mean that you will have to spend half of your salary on caring for your décolleté and neck, but pay attention to the composition. The list of ingredients should include natural extracts, vitamins, antioxidants, peptides.

• Massage. Do not try to “pump” the neck, work out the neck-collar zone and platysma, this is a thin layer of the subcutaneous muscle. Try to force the corners of your mouth downward, feel its pull on the sides of the neck and near the collarbones.

Keep your back straight, the gadget at eye level, and your head held high, in every sense!

90,000 My current daily care for oily and problem skin with The Ordinary brand.

Hello everyone!
Today there will be a great post about my treatment for oily acne prone skin.
I will share what cosmetics I use and show the results.
Not the least role in this care is given to The Ordinary brand, in fact, they play the main violin

…………………………………………. ………………………………………….. ………………

Small disclaimer.
This post is not a call to action, these are my results from over half a year of using the TO (The Ordinary hereafter) avoidance. This is not a universal recipe for everyone. You can learn something useful or interesting for yourself, but I do not give any guarantee at all that this care and such a scheme will work for you at all.
Remember that we are all individuals, we all live in different conditions, and skin care cosmetics can work differently on different people.
If you have serious skin problems, you need to contact a specialist for qualified help.
The Ordinary themselves regularly write on the website that their cosmetics are not curative and in the case of severe acne, they advise first of all to go to the doctor.

…………………………………………. ………………………………………….. ………………

First, a little about my skin type, and in general, given:
• Skin prone to oiliness and inflammation from adolescence.
• 31 years old, the first age-related changes appeared, wrinkles on the forehead are especially noticeable.
• 3rd Central European skin phototype.
• The skin is insensitive, not prone to allergies and dermatitis, dense, rather rough.
• Very large pores on the nose and cheeks, medium on the forehead (hereditary).
• Multiple post-window marks, including uneven terrain and wine stains.
• Tendency to develop deep acne on hormonal basis (during PMS).
• I live in a region with poor ecology. The climate is mild and humid. In the winter, my skin feels much better than the hot and sultry summer.
• I have been visiting a beautician for chemical peels for 5 years. At the moment, I stopped at 3 Jessner peeling procedures every half a year.

The main ingredient in my skin care, when the breakthrough happened and the real results started to appear, it happened when I started using a pharmacy retinoid and fixed it with The Ordinary.
Before that, it was expensive and cheap, pharmacy and mass-market, Israeli, Korean and European, all did not help and did not affect the skin condition in any way.

To close the question about the condition of the skin altogether, I was examined by a dermatologist and gynecologist (yes, with skin they also send to a female doctor;)), I was on a dairy-free diet and a diet without sugar and carbohydrates, I took probiotics, hormones to improve the condition of the skin, but this did not affect her condition in any way.
What really matters is the climate, the weather and my monthly cycles.

I started visiting a beautician 5 years ago, and did 5 Jessner peeling procedures every six months. Unfortunately, the cosmetologist is in another city, it is not very convenient to travel, and two years ago I cheated on her, a year going to cosmetologists-dermatologists in my city. This was a fatal mistake. Two different specialists prescribed mild salicylic peels for me and my skin rebelled, very deep blackheads came back, painful pimples came back, my skin looked dull, there was a lot of dry acne crusts.

June 2017.

In the spring of 2018, I returned to my old beautician, and my skin seemed to remember the years of previous exposure and reacted very positively to Jessner’s course, so positively that instead of 5 visits we stopped at 3. But since I could not go to the beautician for check-ups regularly, I asked her to advise me on something for the summer and winter. No, she didn’t advise me The Ordinary, she advised me Deriva S adapalene gel.And since adapalene is a retinoid, albeit a synthetic one, I decided to radically revise my care, and create a system that includes TO serums, and decided to start with Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, as from one of the brand’s most hit products. This was a watershed moment in my approach to skin care.

Deriva S has worked amazingly with Niacinamide.
At first I used Deriva one evening, Niacinamide the second evening, after three weeks I started using Niacinamide every evening, and Deriva still used Niacinamide every other day.
Absolutely all the subcutaneous tissue are gone, up to one. The skin became very smooth, such as it has never been in my life.
They stopped tormenting deep acne, acne disappeared faster.
By the time I finished Deriva’s tuba, I had already formed an exit scheme, which mainly included The Ordinary.

Now I do not use Deriva C, and if premenstrual acne occurs, then I treat them with Aknestop 20% azelaic acid cream.

What my current evening and morning routine looks like.

At the moment, I have this progress:

In the general routine for me, there are two types of products, those that have a positive impact, and those that are a kind of carrier base, in themselves do not affect anything, but you cannot do without them.
Means for make-up remover, cleaners, tonics, this is just the second option, with rare exceptions.

• Make-up removal . I remove eye makeup with a two-phase agent L’Oreal , tones – with hydrophilic oil .

• Washing. Also the moment in which some particular agent does not play a significant role. I constantly change my washbasin. Now I have Scini c for evening wash and Novita for morning wash.

• Toning . An obligatory step after washing, but I have not yet found my ideal tonic. At the moment, in the morning I use Novita Makeup & Care and in the evening with glycol tonic Elizavecca Milky Piggy Hell Pore Clean Up AHA Fruit Toner .

• Moisturizing Essence . I apply before basic care as a carrier base for other products. Now I have Benton Fermentation Essence .

• Sun protection . An obligatory item both in winter and in summer if you use retinoids and acids. Now I have Isehan Sunkiller Skin Care Gel SPF35 PA +++ , already with the first less active sun I will switch to something heavier. Last year it was 3W Clinic Intensive UV Sunblock Cream SPF50 / PA +++ .

Leaving The Ordinary.

5) The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. Niacinamide Serum . A very versatile product for different skin types. The basic thing for me, I use it both in the morning and in the evening. Brightens, regulates the sebaceous glands, has a positive effect on the general condition of the skin.

Gel-like serum, moderately slimy. Many people note its yeast smell, but I hardly feel it.
Apply 3 drops on face and neck immediately after Benton Moisturizing Essence and wait half a minute until completely absorbed.
Personally, the serum does not roll on me, does not burn, does not conflict with subsequent care.

I use it twice a day, in the morning and with a fan.

Evening care.

• The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion . I decided to start my acquaintance with retinoids with this remedy, for its mild effect, as well as a positive effect on early age-related changes, soft skin renewal.

The emulsion is a milky-yellowish milk. Some aroma is present, but I hardly distinguish it.
I apply 2-3 drops on the face and neck.

I alternate this remedy with acids, applying them every other evening.
The tool did not embroider any negative effects, peeling and other things.

The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2%. AHA acid for superficial exfoliation of the skin. I apply solo once a week and twice a week paired with salicylic acid.
My favorite. As soon as I introduced it into my treatment, I immediately began to have very positive visible changes on my skin.Small pimples at the wings of the nose have disappeared, the pores have become lighter, they have become much cleaner, the texture of the skin has become smoother and smoother.
One of those remedies, the effect of which is immediately visible to me.

I use it 3 times a week, once solo (2-3 drops on the face), and twice mixing with salicylic acid (2 small drops each).

• The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution. 2% salicylic acid serum for gentle exfoliation and regulation of sebum production.I apply solo once a week, and paired with lactic acid twice.
This serum does not give me a noticeable effect on the skin, and most of all I like to use it in tandem with milk.
However, the fact that BHAs work for me was somehow not so clear even after salicylic peels. Therefore, I am still in disarray. On the one hand, everyone around them says how salicylic acid is good for a skin type like mine, on the other hand, it works poorly solo. Although there may be some prolonging effect.
Perhaps in the future I will try another manufacturer’s salicylic and compare the impressions.

• The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution . Bloody peeling 🙂 So named because of the shade. The main purpose is exfoliation and skin renewal.

How many tales go around him. Buyers, seeing a percentage of 30%, think that they are buying a salon peeling, that they will have skin peels off and stuff like that.

I’m not a chemist, but as far as I understand, it’s not how it works, and 30 percent doesn’t mean that the skin will peel off to the bone. The peeling uses a mixture of several acids to soften its effects.

For me personally, this is a very easy tool.

The first time, when I applied it, it visibly tingled, then it began to tickle very much. But after just a few uses, I got used to it.

10 minutes is not enough for me, I hardly see any influence, so I keep it for 15-20 minutes.

For me, this is more of an alternative to peeling rolls.

The serum is slimy, does not flow on the skin, and holds well where it was applied without spreading.

I use it once a week on Mondays, apply in a thin layer avoiding a large area around the eyes and lips ..

Morning departure.

After toner, moisturizing serum and niacinamide in the morning I only use antioxidant and sunscreen.

• The Ordinary Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3% . What is antioxidants for our skin? They neutralize free radicals that destroy skin cells, contributing to the appearance of wrinkles. But besides this, they are involved in many processes that increase the protective functions of the skin, improving its turgor, color, and control the production of sebum.
The only caveat, I have come across information that one should not flirt with antioxidants, because an excess of them can be even more harmful than a lack. Therefore, I do not use other antioxidant serums in parallel with this one.

The serum has an oily yet light texture that is quickly absorbed without leaving a greasy film behind.

And she also has a rather amusing aroma of smoked fish = D Not strong, and I got used to it very quickly, but if you have a very sensitive nose, take note of it 🙂

The consumption is very economical, 2-3 small drops are enough for the face and neck.

When I introduced this serum into my care, I noticed how quickly the skin took on a lively appearance, that very radiance appeared from the inside.

The only caveat, a light water-based cream Isehan Sunkiller Skin Care Gel SPF35 PA +++ rolls on it, so you need to wait until the serum is completely absorbed.

…………………………………………. ………………………………………….. ………………

Here’s a voluminous post. I hope I didn’t tire you.

Now I have updated the care a bit, but it’s too early to draw any conclusions.

So far, oily skin remains the most pressing problem for me. It has become smaller, but all skin type is far from normal. However, the oily content of my skin depends very much on the climate and even the city in which I am. For example, parents who live 100 km north of the city in which I live now have much less oily skin.

I have been using the scheme that I described since the end of last spring. If you still have any questions, ask 🙂

At one time, I was helped by the articles of these authors:

Also on the official website of The Ordinary there are large detailed guides and ready-made solutions, as well as a detailed description of which product, when and how to use it, and what it should not be combined with.

I ordered TO cosmetics in the joint venture, and recently I have been doing it myself from the Cult Beauty website. The site has free shipping from 40 British pounds, as well as, for buyers who do not live in the EU, profit tax is deducted from the cost of all products, approximately 16%, which makes orders on this site very profitable. Delivery to Ukraine is very fast, a week, one and a half maximum. True, The Ordinary brand is not fully represented on the site and there are not many new products.

…………………………………………. ………………………………………………………….. 90 480

That’s all, I hope the post was interesting and useful for you 🙂

As usual, I don’t say goodbye for a long time, pa-pa!

90,000 Cosmetics for children and adolescents

baby cosmetics, anti-acne, cleansing

The last days of vacation and the first days at school are a real aesthetic disaster for schoolchildren and their parents. Against the backdrop of fresh new school clothes, children’s skin looks rather tattered by summer adventures. But we so hoped that the sun and fresh air “will heal everything”!

But on September 1, children often come with irritated, flaky skin after summer , and adolescents – in a stormy acne .

The task of parents is to help children’s skin start the new school year quickly, efficiently and as safely as possible. Putting together a cosmetic bag for school!

Cosmetics for baby skin after summer

1. Delicate cleansing for the most delicate skin
These products have a mild detergent base and complexes of caring components.Pediatricians recommend them even for babies. And we love large, profitable quantities of quality cleaning products for the whole family.

2. Recovery and protection
Global care against any damage to the skin of the face and body from the French dermatological laboratories literally before our eyes will put in order irritated, chapped, sensitive skin of the face, as well as problem areas on the elbows, knees, hands, lips. The universal SOS products will also become the favorites of the whole family.

3. Anti-acne treatment program for girls and boys
A daily routine is the best prevention for problem skin. You will find the most popular products for teenage skin on our website. Take advantage of a consultation with our online assistant or ask your dermatologist for an appointment for a specific product.

All cosmetics for young problem skin

4. Make-up protection and care
Cover it up with my mother’s tonal pimple, find another 10 next to me in the evening – and sob into my pillow at midnight … Is this a familiar situation, mothers? It’s time to equip girls with suitable camouflage products for problem skin! And at the same time, delicious lip balms – for the benefit and mood.

5. Makeup bag with you to school
Improper cleansing or no cleansing at all after physical education and other activities at school – half of the problems with the skin of adolescents. Give your student a special wipes or mini micellar lotion and instruct them on how and when to use them.

90,000 What should be in a teen’s makeup bag: rating of the 13 best products

Features of the skin of adolescents

“Adolescence is characterized by hormonal changes in the body, during this period the work of the sebaceous glands increases,” explains Alexander Prokofiev, expert at La Roche-Posay. “The consequence can be skin problems and acne tendencies.”

Teenagers are often ashamed of acne, avoid communication with peers, and begin to withdraw into themselves.A doctor and, of course, competent care will help to solve problems.

Check with our test if you know how to take care of problem skin.

15

How would you describe your skin condition?

2/5

How often do you cleanse your skin?

3/5

What cleaning products do you usually use?

4/5

Do you have a moisturizer in your beauty routine?

5/5

Are there any matting products in your cosmetic bag?

Another problem that may be troubling in adolescence is allergic reactions or signs of atopic dermatitis.

“Of course, with such manifestations, it is necessary to be under the supervision of a dermatologist in order to carry out medication in a timely manner,” warns Alexander Prokofiev. “As basic care, emollients are used – products that moisturize the skin and restore its hydrolipidic protective layer.”

Back to the table of contents

How to care for adolescent skin

The question that worries all parents is when to select the means for systemic care for a teenager.Vichy expert Ekaterina Turubara answers it this way: “Cosmetologists believe that it is worth starting to care for your skin from the age of 14 with the help of moisturizers. In general, a teenager’s cosmetic “diet” is relatively poor: he will need a gel or foam cleanser, basic moisturizing care (as a rule, at this age, no one divides products into day and night), as well as a sunscreen ”.

“Don’t forget about sun protection.A sunscreen with SPF 25-30 should be used as day care in the summer, replacing it with a product with SPF 50 at sea. After 14 years, a child can safely buy an adult product with SPF. ”

“Teenagers need to choose cosmetics that gently cleanse the skin without degreasing or drying it out. Products should not contain oils, as they can clog pores and contribute to the formation of comedones, ”explains Marina Kamanina, an expert dermatologist at Garnier.

Back to the table of contents

Normal skin care for adolescents

As at any age, you need to draw up a care regimen based on your skin type and existing problems. With normal skin without breakouts and acne-prone skin, the treatment may look like this.

Cleansing

It is better to choose soft cleansers. At the same time, the base should foam well enough: young people rarely understand sulfate-free products and do not understand whey and biphasic textures. A teenager can easily “not wash away” such a remedy and eventually get irritated, and he will try to remove the noticeable foam completely.

Soothing ingredients are welcome (calendula extract, allantoin, bisabolol). But acids with normal skin are not particularly needed.

Humidification

It is better to choose a moisturizing cream with a light texture and a composition that increases the barrier-protective forces of the skin. The epidermis is fully formed by the age of 11-12, but this process is individual, and it is important to maintain the normal insulating function of the skin. The composition of the product may include glycerin, hyaluronic acid or chitosan, as well as ceramides and light oils (for example, grape seed). An overly nourishing texture is not required.

You should definitely not put baby cream on your teenager’s face. The composition based on lanolin and silicones is designed to isolate dry skin from the diaper tissue, and not to care for the skin of the face saturated with sebaceous glands.

Care for problem skin of adolescents

Those with problem skin should pay special attention to thorough cleansing, matting and prevention of acne.

Cleansing

According to Ekaterina Turubara, in addition to the acid-based cleansing gel, the treatment program should include a toning lotion to restore the pH of the skin. Its composition usually includes a small percentage of alcohol, as well as acids, disinfectants and soothing components.

As for the day care product, it should be light texture and non-comedogenic. In the composition, look for:

  • acids: salicylic, glycolic or fruit complex;

  • matting and sebum-regulating additives, for example, zinc and copper salts;

  • disinfecting and anti-inflammatory ingredients.

“When visiting a doctor, adolescents with acne can be prescribed medications based on adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, antibiotics,” warns Ekaterina Turubara. “It is important that the cream used at the time of application of the drug optimally moisturizes the skin: it should not contain oils, but may include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, algae and aloe extracts, as well as soothing ingredients – thermal water, allantoin, madecassoside.”

“To wash problem skin, choose gels that can remove impurities, clean pores, remove excess sebum,” says Alexander Prokofiev. © Getty Images

For problem skin, masks based on white clay with the addition of plant extracts and acids do not hurt. But it is better not to use popular film masks in the presence of pustules.

Photoprotection

Doctors-dermatologists insist: in case of a skin problem, it is important to carefully protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation and not advise a teenager to expose his face to the sun in order to “dry acne”. After exposure to sunbathing, the skin really looks better, but after a while, as soon as the hyperkeratosis caused by ultraviolet light disappears, an exacerbation will occur.

The sunscreen must be adapted for problem skin and have a factor of at least SPF 30.
