Diseases of the cardiovascular system are very common and dangerous due to their complications.
These risks can be significantly reduced if you regularly see your doctor, follow his recommendations for treatment and periodically monitor the condition of the heart and blood vessels. But even in the absence of a cardiological diagnosis established by a doctor, it is useful to be examined for those people who have certain prerequisites for a violation of the heart. During the examination, first of all, you should pay attention to heart rate , in other words, to pulse . At rest, this figure should be from 60 to 80 beats per minute. In addition to frequency, the rhythm of heart contractions is important: if, when measuring the pulse, the intervals between beats have different durations, we can talk about a heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia). This is a reason to visit a cardiologist.
Your doctor may order tests to evaluate your risk factors for heart and vascular disease, your risk for atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and heart failure, and your chance of having a heart attack.
Diagnosis is carried out in a complex way: laboratory tests and instrumental methods of examination.
What tests are included in the cardiology profile?
Lipid profile – determination of cholesterol and its fractions in the blood (the so-called “bad” and “good” cholesterol). The results of this analysis will help to understand the tendency to atherosclerosis and show the presence of coronary heart disease.
Coagulogram allows you to check the viscosity of the blood. Increased viscosity indicates the risk of developing complications of various heart diseases: arterial hypertension, coronary disease, heart attack and stroke. Deviations from the norm in this analysis are a reason to consult a doctor to find out the cause, as well as choose a treatment.
Blood test for enzymes AST (aspartate aminotransferase), CPK-MB (creatine phosphokinase – MB), LDH (lactate dehydrogenase). These are the so-called “markers of cardiovascular disease.” Elevated levels of these enzymes indicate a risk of developing a heart attack and other heart diseases.
Instrumental methods of examination
Electrocardiography (ECG)
This study allows you to evaluate the work of the heart by generating and conducting electrical impulses. According to the cardiogram, the doctor can determine the following violations (if they were noted at the time of recording):
- various cardiac arrhythmias and conduction disturbances in the conduction system of the heart
- myocardial malnutrition (often indicative of ischemic heart disease, the most extreme of which is myocardial infarction)
What cannot be determined by an ECG?
It is not possible to capture “transient” states that did not exist at the time of recording. For example, in the morning there was an attack of arrhythmia, and in the afternoon an ECG can show that the heart is working normally.
In order to record infrequent disturbances, a 24-hour data recording technique (ECG Holter Monitoring) has been developed.
Holter monitoring (HM)
Holter is an ECG that is recorded for a day or more. Therefore, the indicators of such monitoring are much more effective than the cardiogram in controversial and complex cases, when it is possible to evaluate the work of the heart muscle only in dynamics over a long period of time.
Key benefits of this study include:
– the ability to record the work of the heart at rest, sleep, during physical exertion, emotional outbursts, etc.;
– long-term study of myocardial function;
– the ability to fix even minor malfunctions in the work of the heart, which rarely manifest themselves and are noticeable only during a long study;
– the possibility of emotional influence on the work of the heart is excluded.
Holter usually detects rhythm and conduction disturbances, ischemic disease and other diseases of the cardiovascular system. XM is of particular value for “transient”, that is, non-permanent, violations.
Exercise tests (bicycle ergometry and treadmill test – treadmill)
The essence of these methods is to record ECG and blood pressure with gradually increasing dosed physical activity.
The study allows you to determine whether there are ECG signs of coronary heart disease against the background of physical activity and how a person tolerates physical activity.
ECHO KG (echocardiography or ultrasound of the heart)
The method allows you to determine the size of the heart, the thickness of the walls of the heart chambers, the direction and speed of blood flow using the Doppler effect.
Valvular heart disease (prolapse, stenosis, insufficiency), hypertrophy (thickening) of the walls, increased pressure in the pulmonary circulation are detected, the ability of the heart to contract and relax is assessed, it is also possible to see blood clots in the heart cavities, the degree of atherosclerotic lesions of the initial sections of the aorta.
Coronary angiography
This method is the “gold standard” for diagnosing the condition of the coronary arteries in case of suspected coronary heart disease.
The procedure is done in a hospital in a specialized department equipped with a special X-ray unit for video recording of images of the heart.
A catheter is inserted into the heart under local anesthesia through an artery in the leg or arm. Through it, a radiopaque substance is supplied and a video recording of the x-ray image is made.
Narrowings of the coronary arteries (stenoses) become visible and doctors can evaluate them so that they can then decide with the patient whether surgery is necessary.
Blood pressure control
Regularly measuring blood pressure is important not only for people diagnosed with arterial hypertension, but also for many other “cores”. In a healthy person, blood pressure indicators are 120-140 / 80-90 mm Hg. Art. But if they go beyond the norm, i.
e. above 140/90 mm Hg. Art., this may indicate diseases of the cardiovascular system, which are important to recognize in time and consult a doctor.
To measure pressure, special devices are used – tonometers and electronic meters. When using semi-automatic devices – blood pressure monitors – the manual cuff is inflated by compressing the pear. For electronic meters, the manual cuff is automatically inflated and is the preferred option for self-measurement of blood pressure at home.
Modern devices for measuring blood pressure are very convenient, easy to use, multifunctional: in addition to pressure, they also determine the pulse, “remember” the obtained indicators.
How to measure blood pressure with a tonometer?
- Rest at least 5 minutes
- Avoid smoking and caffeine (coffee, cola, tea) for 30 minutes before measuring blood pressure
- Sit back in a chair with your arm resting comfortably on a table. Legs are not crossed, feet are on the floor.
