Pros
  • Long-lasting
  • Antibacterial
Cons
  • Strong scent

With antibacterial properties and no oil to break down the integrity of a condom, your go-to sunburn remedy doubles as a natural form of lube, Dr. Wider says. As with any lube, you just want to avoid perfumes or additives (check the ingredient list to make sure it’s almost 100% aloe vera). With aloe vera, the only way to get 100% is to harvest the plant yourself—but this product gets pretty darn close with 95% organic aloe vera, vitamin E oil, and a few necessary preservatives.

What people are saying: “Finally a product that makes my extremely sensitive lady friend very happy. I have tried so many products and they all cause burning. This feels 100% natural and causes no burning whatsoever!”

Best Silicone Lubricant

Überlube Luxury Lubricant

Shop at AmazonShop at Walmart

Credit: Überlube

Pros
  • Contains nourishing vitamin E
  • Compatible with condoms
Cons
  • Dries quickly

Überlube is made with both silicone and vitamin E, an antioxidant known to nourish the skin. It’s super slick, compatible with condoms, and a little bit goes a long way, says Dr. Dweck. “It’s also reasonable for water play since this does not dissolve in water,” she notes. “Just use caution as it can be slippery when used in the shower or bath.” (Also remember: Silicone lubes will degrade silicone sex toys—water-based options are generally your best bet for those.)

What people are saying: “Due to several medical reasons I deal with chronic vaginal dryness. I’ve tried dozens of water-based lubricants, but they always have to be reapplied fairly quickly. This lube only takes a few drops, stays slick, and feels natural. Also, it’s not that difficult to clean off.”

Credit: Organic Glide

Pros
  • Contains probiotics
  • FDA-approved
Cons
  • Hard to clean

Organic Glide has a long list of things it’s free of: glycerin, fragrance, parabens, flavorings, alcohol, and hormones. It’s also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an “intercourse enhancer.” The lube also has a probiotic formula that claims to help protect against future UTIs. “The idea is that certain strains of probiotics can prevent and treat an imbalance in the vagina which might be able to prevent UTIs and yeast infections,” Dr. Wider explains. While this theory hasn’t been completely proven yet, the clean ingredients still make this one worth a try.

What people are saying: “Due to birth control pills that I cannot stop taking, sex has always been a painful experience for me and as you can imagine, that puts a major hamper on relationships. This changed everything. Now that sex is no longer painful, my sex drive has magically surfaced. I just wish I found this years ago. Ladies, if you have the same problem, trust me, this will help. No other lube or vaginal suppository (I’ve tried so many) has helped.”

Astroglide? Yes, ma’am. This mainstream brand offers an unscented option that’s pretty much guaranteed to agree with everyone’s skin. The ultra-gentle gel is hypoallergenic, too, which means even sensitive types can benefit from this natural lubricant, says Dr. Braaten.

What people are saying: “For years, I was using a silicone based lubricant and it always stained my sheets. I like this so much more! It doesn’t stain my sheets, a little goes a long way, and it’s husband approved.”

Best Natural Lube

Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

$22 at Amazon

Credit: Viva Labs

Pros
  • Organic
  • Great value for size
Cons
  • Some can be allergic

Even though coconut oil is a no-go with a condom, it can still do the trick if you feel comfortable having sex without one (meaning you’re using another form of contraception and both you and your partner have been tested for STDs). Dr. Braaten notes that 100% coconut oil without additives is a common form of lube that’s very well-tolerated. “It’s very rare for people to have any type of allergic reaction to it,” she says. And while it’s certainly smooth, the downside is that oils tend to be a little messier than water-based lubes. Fortunately, you only need a use little bit.

What people are saying: “Love this is smooth and doesn’t get bitty like some coconut oil! Would buy this brand again – good value for money!”

What people are saying: “I have purchased so many lubes it’s not funny. Hated them all until I came upon this one after my [doctor] recommended it. It is water based….not the oil based ones that tend to cause irritation and UTIs…which I kept getting with all of the others. This one has been a lifesaver with the issues I was having.”

  • Good for sensitive skin
Cons
  • Sticky for some

This natural, water-based personal lubricant is free of fragrances, dyes, glycerin, and parabens. Plus, it has an easy-to-use pump and testers love how long it lasts (not to mention, the classy, discreet label).

What people are saying: “As someone who’s lived with sensitive skin for my entire life, finding skin products that don’t irritate my little baby skin has always been important. That’s why when I first started searching for lubricants, I was afraid to try a lot of products out of fear of what they would do to my poor gonads (lotion was doing a number on them too, even the unscented stuff). I tried this product, and I’ve never had to try anything else; it just works. No sensitivity issues, and it works exactly as a lubricant should.”

Pros
  • Hypallergenic
  • Rave Reviews
Cons
  • Messy

If you love the idea of using coconut oil as a natural lube, but don’t necessarily want to use the jar in your kitchen, reach for this great alternative instead. Completely organic, edible, and hypoallergenic, this natural lubricant contains various plant oils and butters for an effortless slip without irritation, odd smells, or unpleasant tastes. Even better? Testers rave about the quality of the product, emphasizing that it’s set a higher bar.

What people are saying: “This was my and my husband’s first time using an oil based lube and we will never be going back! This makes it feel so so natural, smooth, and it instantly matches your body temperature instead of feeling like cold slippery goo in your lady bits. It lasts the whole time and you only need a bit. Did I mention it’s also less messy? It’s not a runny liquid so it doesn’t spill or leak everywhere and personal cleanup is lessened because it absorbs into your skin. This lube has undoubtedly enhanced our sex life! Thanks Coconu!”

Pros
  • Made for sensitive skin
  • Long-lasting formula
Cons
  • Some users find the formula too thick

Developed for very sensitive skin, this water-based lube leaves out all the questionable ingredients and stays as neutral as possible for long-lasting, comfortable moisture. The lubricant leaves skin silky smooth, without any excess greasiness or staining.

What people are saying: “Have used others, which dry quickly and become sticky. This water based formula is slippery for a longer time. If that is the quality [you’re] looking for then try this one. I’m definitely not disappointed.”

How to choose the best natural lubricant for your vagina

Don’t fall for packaging. Remember to read the ingredients to identify which products are free of irritating ingredients.

Simple is best: “I generally recommend against lubricants that are scented or claim to create a sensation,” says Dr. Braaten. “Those can be very irritating and can cause rashes and allergic reactions.”

Opt for a water-based lube: If you plan to use a condom, go for water-based lubricants (which are generally non-irritating) instead of oils. “Oil-based lubricants can degrade latex, causing small holes and making them less effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs,” says Dr. Braaten. There are also silicone-based lubes, which can be a bit more irritating and don’t work well with silicone sex toys.

Be aware of other irritants: In addition to flavors and fragrances, there are a variety of add-ins to steer clear of if you prefer a natural formula, including glycerin, propylene glycol, and petroleum-based ingredients, which may cause irritation, alter the pH of your vagina, and increase your risk of yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis. Certain preservatives, like parabens, are also pretty controversial, since some research shows “they have been shown to disrupt hormone function in the body and act like estrogen,” says Dr. Wider. (The Food and Drug Administration says the investigation into these claims is ongoing, though.)

How can I increase lubrication naturally?

Menopause, low estrogen, and other factors like stress and dehydration can reduce your body’s natural lubrication. While it’s always important to talk to your doctor if vaginal dryness is an ongoing issue, there may be ways to help boost your body’s lubrication by consuming the right foods, vitamins, and minerals. For one thing, make sure you’re drinking enough water. Beyond that, making sure you’re getting enough vitamin E and vitamin D in your diet, either through foods or supplements, may help. Foods like fatty fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, greens, and fortified breads or cereals may help.

If your vagianal dryness is painful and you are unable to find relief, you can also ask your doctor about estradiol cream. This medication can help with vaginal dryness, irritation, and painful sex. “Estrogen vaginal cream can be used and is considered safe if you have no hormone-dependent cancers like breast, ovarian, or endometrial,” Dr. Lindemann says.

Is natural lubricant safe?

Determining if any lubricant is safe boils down to what ingredients it’s made of. Alan Lindemann, M.D., Ob/gyn and maternal mortality expert with resources at Pregnancy Your Way says to avoid oils, which can cause breakage to the condom. Instead, he advises choosing products that we know are safe, meaning they are recommended by a doctor or approved by the FDA.

There’s also ingredients you should look for in a natural lubricant. “I would look for agents which actually build tissue like hyaluronic acid, or vitamins A, B, C, or E,” Dr. Lindemann says. These ingredients are not only safe, but they’re healthy for your vagina.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it’s best to avoid lubricants with a pH higher than 4.5 because this can throw off your vagina’s natural pH balance. Also, opt for a lubricant with a low osmolality, which will prevent drying out the vaginal mucous membrane.

As long as the ingredients are safe to be used with condoms, a natural lube should not cause any issues. When in doubt, talk to your doctor and ask for any recommendations. If you have any vaginal concerns or are prone to infections, a gynecologist can help you choose a lubricant that is gentle, irritating, and hypoallergenic. Whenever using a new lubricant, monitor any negative side effects and stop usage if you are having a bad reaction.

To ensure you’re picking a safe lubricant, you can check with the Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE), a leading organization assessing harmful chemicals in products. They recommend selecting a lubricant from their approved brands or from a list of lubricant testing results supplied by the WHO.

What’s the difference between regular and natural lubricant?

Just like other health and beauty products, such as makeup, sunscreen, and deodorant, the key difference between the regular and “natural” version of the product is the type of ingredients in it. Regular lubricants are typically made with chemicals, such as parabens, petroleum, glycerin, and synthetic fragrances. Some ingredients are not harmful to vaginal health, but studies have shown potential risks with certain chemicals. Parabens are a common agent found in lubricants, and the WVE says this chemical can cause irritation to the vaginal mucous membranes and genital rashes. Fragrances or flavors can include various chemicals, which can include carcinogens, allergens, and reproductive toxins. Another common chemical found in lube, chlorhexidine gluconate, can kill off healthy bacteria in your vagina.

For the purposes of this story, a “natural” lubricant is considered to be hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and made without chemicals. This does not mean it is necessarily organic as each ingredient would need to be manufactured or grown organically as well. Natural lubricants will not include the chemicals found in many of the lubes found in the market.

Why is it better to choose a lubricant without glycerin? Eska blog.

The whole point of a lubricant is that it makes sex more comfortable, enjoyable and helps you enjoy sex. This does not apply to those lubricants that give you an undesirable effect after sex, whether it be a rash, irritation, itching or a yeast infection.

In European countries, many lubricant manufacturers have abandoned the use of glycerin in lubricants. Safe for cosmetic purposes, it can backfire in intimate cosmetics. We’ll tell why you should choose a lubricant without glycerin.

While it is known that the vaginal ecosystem is more sensitive and absorbent than normal skin, there is little research on the safety of ingredients in personal care products. However, research on how glycerin and propylene glycol as part of a lubricant can affect a woman’s health is becoming more and more. New programs have led to the discovery that certain chemicals, including glycerin, which is the base for most water-based lubricants, can irritate or damage the vaginal lining, potentially increasing the risk of transmission of STIs such as herpes and HIV. Lubricants that contain glycerin have also been linked to yeast infections and altered vaginal flora.

At low concentrations, glycerol is a breeding ground for fungi, while at higher concentrations it damages the mucous membrane.

Lubricants with glycerin and propylene glycol are key to high osmolality. High osmolality lubricants dry out and damage cells, making tissues more susceptible to infection.
Studies have shown that natural lubricants without glycerin have an osmolality index close to that of the vaginal mucosa.

Below is a table from the list of lubricants published on the website of the World Health Organization. If we study the composition of the available lubricants, we will see that they contain glycerin or propylene glycol.

Use and purchase of additional lubricants for male and female condoms: WHO / UNFPA / FHI360

Another point, lubricants with glycerin have a thicker, stickier gel-like texture, which can impair tactile sensations.

More than 75% of women will get a yeast infection at least once in their life

If you are prone to it, then you are better off buying a lubricant without glycerin.
