What are the benz. Mercedes-Benz: A Comprehensive Guide to the Luxury Car Manufacturer’s Model Lineup
What are the different Mercedes-Benz model series. How does Mercedes-Benz name its vehicles. What do the letters and numbers in Mercedes-Benz model names mean. What are the key Mercedes-Benz terminology and technologies. Which Mercedes-Benz models are available in various body styles.
Understanding Mercedes-Benz Naming Conventions
Mercedes-Benz, a renowned luxury car manufacturer, offers a diverse range of vehicles to cater to various consumer preferences. However, their naming system can be somewhat confusing for the uninitiated. The company employs a logical approach to naming its vehicles, using a combination of letters and numbers. Generally, letters found later in the alphabet denote larger, more expensive vehicles, while larger numbers indicate more powerful (and costlier) engines.
For instance, a GLA 250 is a smaller, lower-powered SUV compared to a GLS 580. It’s important to note that while in the past, Mercedes-Benz model ‘numbers’ corresponded to their engine volumes (e.g., an E55 featured a 5.5-liter engine), this is no longer the case due to advancements in turbocharging and hybrid technology.
Decoding Mercedes-Benz Model Names
- Letters: Indicate the vehicle class or type (e.g., C-Class, E-Class, S-Class)
- Numbers: Represent the engine size or power output (higher numbers usually mean more powerful engines)
- Additional letters: Denote special features or variants (e.g., 4MATIC for all-wheel drive)
Key Mercedes-Benz Terminology
To fully appreciate the Mercedes-Benz lineup, it’s crucial to understand some key terms and technologies used by the company:
- 4MATIC: Mercedes-Benz’s all-wheel-drive system
- 4MATIC+: All-wheel-drive system specifically for AMG models
- Cabriolet: A four-seat convertible
- Coupe: A car with a sloping, arch-like roofline (can be two-door, four-door, or even an SUV)
- EQ: Mercedes-Benz’s sub-brand for electric vehicles
- EQ Boost: A mild-hybrid system added to some turbocharged engines
- Mercedes-AMG: The company’s performance division, producing sportier and more powerful variants
- Mercedes-Maybach: A sub-brand for ultra-luxury vehicles
- Roadster: A two-seat convertible

The Complete Mercedes-Benz Buying Guide: Every Model, Explained
Welcome to Brand Breakdown, a series of comprehensive yet easy-to-digest guides to your favorite companies, with insights and information you won’t find on the average About page.
Mercedes-Benz produces a wide range of cars, from relatively affordable sub-compacts to opulent pleasure sedans for the uber-rich. The company names its vehicles efficiently – no faux-French flair required – with letters and numbers. That naming system, while sensible, can get a bit confusing for buyers.
There are GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, and GLS SUVs, none of which should be mistaken for the G-Class. That’s before you get to the multiple variations of each with different engine sizes, drivetrains and body styles. Essentially, letters found later in the alphabet denote larger, more expensive vehicles and larger numbers denote more powerful (and more costly) engines. For example, a GLA 250 is a smaller, lower-powered SUV than a GLS 580.
While in the past Mercedes-Benz model ‘numbers’ corresponded to their engine volumes (an E55 featured a 5.5-liter engine), that is no longer the case. Turbocharging and hybrid technology has advanced to the point where big horsepower can be derived from much smaller engines. An example below like the AMG E63 currently features a turbocharged 4.0-liter engine (and may get smaller in the future)
And so it’s obvious: the Mercedes-Benz lineup cries out for a helpful explainer, delineating all the different options and terms and what to expect. See below for a simplified guide.
Mercedes-Benz Terminology
- 4MATIC: all-wheel-drive
- 4MATIC+: All-wheel-drive on an AMG car
- Cabriolet: A four-seat convertible
- Coupe: A car with a sloping arch-like roofline. For Mercedes, this can be a two-door car, a four-door car or an SUV
- EQ: Mercedes sub-brand for electric cars.
- EQ Boost: Mild-hybrid system added to some turbocharged engines. An “electric auxiliary compressor” generates electric power as the turbocharger spools up to provide smooth acceleration
- Mercedes-AMG: Mercedes’ performance division. These cars are typically sportier, more aggressively styled and more expensive than standard models
- Mercedes-Maybach: Mercedes revived the Maybach brand as the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand. These are high-end luxury cars commanding a far higher price point than typical Mercedes models
- Roadster: A two-seat convertible
A Note on Supply Chain Issues
Mercedes has suspended several models for the 2022 model year due to ongoing supply chain issues. AMG V8 cars like the E 63 S and G 63 were particularly affected. Mercedes has not yet clarified the precise models affected, r when they can be expected to re-enter the lineup. Some vehicles listed below are still in the lineup, but may not be available at the time of reading.

How Mercedes-Benz became so prestigious, and why it is challenged
Mercedes-Benz can brag that it gave the world the first production automobile. It has long been an innovator, a relentless pursuer of quality and engineering excellence.
Many consumers say owning a Mercedes-Benz is a sign they have finally made it in life. It is considered one of the most aspirational brands among larger automakers — even by luxury car buyers who prefer cars from its competitors, according to research by industry survey firm AutoPacific.
But the automotive world is changing. Governments and a few consumers are pushing for electric vehicles, and companies are racing to develop new forms of transportation, including cars that can drive themselves.
Some of these new technologies, such as electric power trains, challenge Mercedes-Benz’s traditional strengths. After all, one of the things the three-pointed star was known for was its superior engine technology.
Mercedes-Benz, say some industry watchers, has been a bit slower than some to adapt to the electrification challenge. Mercedes-Benz said in early 2021 that it planned to delay the introduction of its EQC electric sport utility vehicle in the United States for the foreseeable future, even though SUVs are the most popular light vehicle in the American market today. The company said it still plans to release its electric sedan.
The German luxury brand and its traditional peers, such as BMW and Audi, also face challenges in the growing and extremely important Chinese market from electric upstarts like Tesla and Chinese makers such as Li Auto, according to some analysts. Historically, the three big German brands have controlled 60%of the luxury market in China, but that share is eroding as Tesla continues to open new stores in China, according to a report from Piper Sandler.
Mercedes-Benz has heritage, prestige, talent and a lot of experience in its favor. But the automotive industry is making some big pivots.
Supply Problems Will Keep Most Mercedes V8s Out Of U.S. In 2022
The Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 (left) and GLE 63 (right) are among a handful of SUVs that Mercedes-Benz will not ship to the U.S. for the 2022 model year due to supply chain issues. Mercedes-Benz
Consumers won’t be able to purchase many top-selling SUVs from Mercedes-Benz for the 2022 model year. That’s because the German automaker will not be bringing most of its V8 models to the U.S. due to a “supply chain” issue and “several other factors,” a spokesperson for the company told Forbes Wheels.
The German automaker did not explain what the specific issues are but company insiders, speaking on background, indicated the primary problem is the ongoing global shortage of microchips. The semiconductor shortage has severely impacted global automotive manufacturing and has contributed to both the declining levels of dealer inventory and rising new and used car pricing over the past six months.
“The company’s prioritized focus to comply with various global, external and internal requirements, as well as several other factors, including but not limited to challenges in the supply chain, (will) have an impact on the offering of the product portfolio in various markets,” Mercedes said in a statement.
The German automaker has not said what other markets will be impacted.
The vehicles that will be dropped from the portfolio include the C63, E63, GLC63, G550 and G63, GLE580 and GLE63, GLS580 and GLS63 and the GLS600 Maybach. The GLC and the GLE midsize SUVs are top-sellers for the automaker and sit within the top five among rivals in their respective categories.
Only two V8 models will remain available in the U.S. for 2022: the new S580 and S580 Maybach. Mercedes just launched an all-new version of the flagship sedan and the V8 versions are the S-Class halo cars.
The decision to limit V8 availability in the U.S. was first reported by a Reddit user citing a notice sent to U.S. dealers last week.
According to the dealer letter cited by the Reddit user, the V8 drought will continue through the 2022 model year. But the automaker suggested in its statement that the situation could improve, saying that it “is exploring every opportunity to solve the challenges at hand as soon as possible.”
For now, dealers not only will stop selling most V8 models, but they will have to advise customers who have already placed orders that their vehicles won’t be delivered, at least not anytime soon.
The move could prove a costly one considering the V8-powered models are typically the most expensive in any particular product segment. And, unless Mercedes can shift buyers to less powerful four- and six-cylinder products, the loss of volume would seem to assure that it slips from a leadership position in the U.S. luxury car market.
Mercedes is by no means the only automaker to feel the impact of the ongoing semiconductor shortage. Nissan last week said it would shut down production at its big assembly plant in Smyrna, Tennessee until at least August 30. Ford warned last week that the shortages will mean delays of up to six weeks in delivering the Mustang Mach-E battery-electric vehicles to customers.
Automotive inventories stand at barely a quarter of the normal 3 million vehicles that should be on dealer lots this time of year, according to Bob Carter, sales chief for the Toyota and Lexus brands.
And shortages have taken a toll on overall U.S. sales in recent months, even while new vehicle prices have reached record highs averaging around $41,000, according to Kelley Blue Book.

MERCEDES BENZ Models & History, Photo Galleries, Specs
The German luxury car-manufacturer has been around for more than a century, having elegantly drifted the both smooth and rough curves of automobile history. Responsible for the modern internal combustion engine’s genesis, the ‘fathers’ of the Mercedes-Benz brand practically invented the automobile.
Many years ago when mahogany canes and high-top hats were the ultimate fashion and social prominence statements, two men by the names of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler were busy freeing the world from horse-powered transportation. The 1886 archetype of the modern engine, their device was not a result of team-work but of independent and synchronous research and development. Although both lived in Southern Germany, they never actually met if historical accounts are to be believed.
Despite the equal share of the two engineer’s contribution to the development of the four-stroke petrol engine, it was Gottlieb Daimler who garnered more attention that would eventually lead to world-spread fame. Following Daimler’s successful results in racing, a wealthy Austrian business man by the name of Emil Jellinek became interested in the Unterturkheim-built cars. Daimler and his chief-engineer, Wilhelm Maybach’s work had pleased Jellinek to the extent of him approaching the two with a business proposal: a large number of cars would be ordered in exchange to a name change from Daimler to Mercedes – Jellinek daughter’s name – and the right to alter the car’s designs as well as the right to resell the vehicles in some European countries, including Austria, France and Belgium.
Well before the WWI outbreak, Gotllieb Daimler had gained a reputation for his vehicles that was greater than that of Benz. However, the latter would strive to keep up, managing to stay close to Daimler’s tail. In 1908, both manufacturers shared the podium with winnings in the French Grand Prix.
After having converted their factories to cater for Army demands during WWI, the two rivals were brought together by a a series of circumstances, dictated by precarious economic status and impossibility of self-support. Thus, the Daimler’s Motorengesellshaft merged with Benz & Cie in 1926, morphing into the larger Daimler – Benz AG.
Ever since, Mercedes-Benz cars have been some of the best cars in the world, standing as symbols of flawless quality and cutting edge engineering. In fact, the men behind the brand are responsible for the development of countless improvements that cover every inch of a car’s anatomy.
Despite having been widely criticized for alleged forced employment and violation of human rights during the Second World War, Mercedes – Benz have been successful at building an automotive empire, strongly supported by some of the company’s far-from-average clients, such as state leaders, media moguls and ridiculously rich families.
Mercedes – Benz have become known particularly for their limousines, most of which can be seen in most movies ever since the Lumiere brothers became famous for their ‘little’ invention called cinematography. As if outstanding product quality and world fame weren’t enough, the Mercedes – Benz team has also fathered tons of innovations, many of them targeting the simple four-cylinder engine.
28 years after Otto revealed his prototype of a four-stroke gasoline engine, Wilhelm Maybach perfected his idea and built an engine for Daimler to be used in boats only. Development of the engine that would eventually propel land, water and air vehicles fulfilling Daimler’s dream, took some 8 years before being fitted on the Daimler Phoenix model, the first vehicle in the world to be equipped with such an engine.
Meanwhile, Karl Benz was busy working on a four-cylinder horizontally-opposed piston engine as an improvement of his 1897 contra-design. 1900saw the release of the improved contra-engine and completion of Benz’s work at the time. Some of the advantages the horizontal design had over its in-line counterpart were room and dynamics related. The opposed horizontal placement and firing order of the pistons meant very few vibrations, a lower center of gravity as well as more space for fitting other devices like turbo or superchargers.
The early 1900’s brought forth a second series of engineering innovations with Maybach’s development of the “hammer” engine-design for Daimler that earned its name thanks to its dual-camshaft controlled lateral intake and exhaust valves; Daimler also came up with the Simplex in 1902, a racing car powered by an in-line four cylinder engine that featured overhead intake valves and rod-driven exhaust valves. To ensure low working temperatures, the Simplex design also boasted double walled cylinders to accommodate an even cooling water flow as close as possible to the heat source.
The origins of hybrid vehicles are not as recent as one may think. In fact, they can be traced as far back as the 1900’s, when the Mercedes Mixte range was released. These cars used 45 or 70 hp engines to power electrical generators. A special device, or ‘hub’, was then used to convert the obtained electrical energy into drive power. Built by DMG (Daimler Mottorengesellshaft), the vehicles were quite a hit at the time having won races such as the Exelberg.
Mercedes-Benz is also guilty of breaking a number of speed records, among which ramming the 200 km/h barrier is probably the mots notable. The idea of a vehicle that could reach such a speed as early as 1909 seems far fetched today but Benz’s Lightning stands proof. Such a performance could only be achieved by displacement growth at the time and despite its lean-sounding name, the Lightning was a monster powered by a 21.5 liter engine.
After several other improvements like the introduction of 3-valve dual-ignition and 4-valve engines, DMG would set foot in the turbocharger era. The company’s early involvement in aero-engine construction paid of in 1921 when an engine based on WWI aero-designs was developed by Paul Daimler.
As far as diesel trucks go, Benz did it first. The OB 2 diesel engine was revealed in 1923 and 1924 saw the release of the world’s first diesel truck. Soon after Daimler and Benz joined hands in a profitable twirl of brilliant inventions, the 260 D model would premier in 1936: it was the world’s first diesel-run passenger car. As expected, several improvements on the 260 D would follow. However, the German manufacturer’s quests for leaner diesel engines would soon be hampered by the WWII outbreak.
After taking a forced and most unwelcome break from passenger-car making and engine research during the war, Mercedes – Benz resumed their activities, releasing the 170 V model in 1946. Based on the 260 D, the 4-cylinder 1.7 engine it was equipped with predated the release of the 170 D in 1949, a car that reignited customer’s interest in the brand while ensuring the company’s comeback.
During the 50’s, Mercedes – Benz produced some of their best looking cars ever such as the 190 and 300 SL. The first was a compact roadster that garnered acclaim after setting a new world diesel record in 1959. The latter is none other then the famous gull-winged model that is apparently making a comeback through the SLC model that is still to be revealed. Besides its stunning looks, the 300 SL was the first production vehicle to benefit from early fuel-injection technology.
By the time the 80’s came, the world had already grown concerned with the effects of CO2 emissions and overall car pollution. Mercedes – Benz were among the first to comply with regulations through the introduction of the closed-loop three-way catalytic converter in 1985. With this and several oil-filter changes, like easy from-above access, Mercedes – Benz vehicles went further to become even more advanced.
By the early 1990’s, their diesel car range had completely switched to four-valve intake/exhaust systems and carburetors were dropped in favor of fuel injection systems. A few years later, Mercedes – Benz moved into developing superchargers which it did through the release of the C 230 Kompressor.
After marking a new era in mechanical supercharging technology, Mercedes went on to cross new borders through the release of new engineering concepts and ground breaking designs. The BlueTec system unveiled in 2005 was developed with only one though in mind: cutting CO2 emissions, achievement made possible through the use of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). Two other notable events occurred the same year with the release of the A 200 Turbo engine for the A-Klasse and the organic-looking Bionic concept.
Mercedes – Benz was the first to fit ABS and ESP systems on its cars and lately it has truly crossed the line with the DiesOtto engine which premiered at the 2004 Frankurt Moto Show. The DiesOtto boasts variable combustion chambers while delivering the advantages of both gasoline and diesel drives. Its CAI (Controlled Auto Ignition) allows the spark plugs to stop firing at higher temperatures when fuel, gasoline in this case, can be ignited the same way diesel can. The route researchers have taken to achieve variable combustion chambers remains unveiled yet although it is sure to be made public in a few years from now when the DiesOtto is likely to start replacing regular engines.

Model range and prices of Mercedes-Benz cars
The German company Daimler-Motoren-Gesselschaft, which produces Mercedes passenger cars, was founded in 1901 by Gottlieb Daimler, the legendary author of the world’s first four-wheeled car with a gasoline engine. The famous designer Wilhelm Maybach helped Gottlieb Daimler build this car. Despite a number of shortcomings, this initiative was actively supported by the consul of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Emil Jellinek, after whose daughter the first Mercedes-35P5 model was named. The technical characteristics of the Mercedes-35P5 allowed the car to reach speeds of up to 90 km per hour, which at that time was considered an impressive indicator.
In the early years of its existence, Daimler-Motoren-Gessellschaft built not only cars, but also developed engines for aircraft and ships, which is why the appearance of the Mercedes logo in the form of a three-pointed star. This figure symbolizes the success of the German company on land, in the air and in the water.
Following a merger with another car manufacturer, Benz in 1926, this star was surrounded by a ring-shaped laurel wreath, reflecting Benz’s victories in the motorsport arena. The new Daimler-Benz concern is headed by Ferdinand Porsche, who has significantly updated the Mercedes lineup. It was he who launched the “compressor” K series, which included such famous models as the Mercedes 24/110/160 PS with a six-cylinder engine. The car, equipped with a 6.3-liter engine, accelerated to a fantastic speed of 145 km per hour for those times, for which it was nicknamed the “death trap”.
Hans Niebel, who succeeded Ferdinand Porsche in 1928, took an active part in the development of such machines as the Manheim-370 and Nurburg-500. In 1930, under his leadership, a Mercedes-Benz 770 with a powerful 200-horsepower engine was presented at the car market, the working volume of which was 7.6 liters. In addition, the car was equipped with a supercharger. In the 30s, Mercedes-200 passenger cars and Mercedes-380 sports cars were presented to the public, on the basis of which the “compressor” models Mercedes-Benz-540K were built a little later.
In 1935, Max Sailer, the creator of the world’s first mass-produced passenger car with a diesel power plant, the Mercedes-260D, took over as chief designer. During his rule, cars were built, which were actively used by the leaders of the Nazi movement. We are talking about a Mercedes-770, equipped with a frame made of oval beams, with a spring rear suspension.
During the Second World War, the German concern produced not only Mercedes cars, but also trucks. The hostilities caused great damage to the main factories of the company, the activities of which were able to resume only a year after the end of the war.
One of the first post-war developments of the company was the Mercedes-180 model, designed in 1953 with a pontoon-type monocoque body. Three years later, the Mercedes-300SL Gullwing sports coupe with unusual gull-wing doors, which at that time had no analogues in the world, was released.
At the end of the 50s, the series production of Mercedes-Benz was renewed with the use of Robert Bosch engines with a mechanical fuel injection system. One of the first models with this innovation was the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE.
The latest achievements in the automotive industry of those years were embodied in a completely new family of middle-class cars, which was offered to customers in 1959. The Mercedes-220, 220S, 220SE models demonstrated the highest technical level of performance: a spacious luggage compartment, absolutely independent suspension for all wheels, a stylish body with vertical headlight units delighted fans of the German brand.
The executive class in the Mercedes line was introduced a little later – in 1963, with the release of the Mercedes-600 model. The car immediately became a contender for the title of the best on the planet for real comfort and prestige. It was equipped with a 6.3-liter engine producing 250 horsepower and a four-speed “automatic”. Comfortable wheel suspension on pneumatic elements became a pleasant addition to the developments. The body length of the executive car was more than six meters.
Sports models were replaced by more modest ones, for example, the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL, known in the common people as the “pagoda” because of the original shape of the roof with the middle part just below the sidewalls. If ten years ago the German brand managed to firmly establish itself in the car market of post-war Europe, then by the end of the 60s the whole world was talking about Mercedes. A completely different scale of production gave a start and new styling standards, which made Mercedes passenger cars even more elegant.
The first novelty of the 70s, which replaced the “Pagoda”, was the Mercedes SL R107 model, which successfully captured the American market and existed for 18 years.
The 1973 oil crisis hit car sales unfavorably, but the company managed to get out of its predicament by launching the W114 / W115 series with more fuel efficient engines.Buyers wanted not only luxury and convenience, but also reliability. As a result, against the backdrop of ruined competitors, the Mercedes brand remained afloat.
In the early 80s, the legendary Gelandewagen appeared in the Mercedes line – an all-wheel drive SUV of the 460 series, which was famous for its high cross-country ability and reliability. The first such car was made to order for the Iranian Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, a Daimler-Benz shareholder.
In 1984, a fundamentally new range of business-class sedans, the Mercedes W124, began to be produced, once again showing the possibility of creating stylish and modern cars with a durable body. The most advanced developments of the time were embodied in the W124 family. Plastic molding to direct air under the car has improved the aerodynamics of the car. Fuel consumption has been reduced, as has the noise level from the oncoming air flow.
In 1990, a new product was released, which today has many fans – the Mercedes 124 of the 500E series. Equipped with a five-liter V-shaped “eight” with a capacity of 326 horsepower, this Mercedes has structural differences from the usual W124 – it is not without reason that it is called the “wolf in sheep’s clothing.”The legendary “spinning top”, assembled at the Porsche plant, received a rear suspension with hydropneumatic level control, a doubled catalyst, an electronic LH-Jetronic injection system instead of the traditional KE-Jetronic system. External differences of the “top” from the rest of “Mercedes” 124 series consist in extended wheel arches and the presence of additional foglights at the bottom of the front bumper.
Mercedes W124 500E has become widespread in the CIS countries and is widely recognized in show business and mafia circles.Among the famous owners of the model are director Nikita Mikhalkov, musicians Yuri Loza, Dmitry Malikov, politician Gennady Zyuganov. “Volchok” – a real legend of the 90s – was captured in the serial film “Brigade”.
By the beginning of the new millennium, the Mercedes model range was expanded twice: instead of five classes of cars (which were in 1993), there were ten. In 2005, new S- and CL-class models were launched, demonstrating the brand’s new style with retro elements. Packed with the latest technology, the S65 CL65 AMG with a powerful V12 under the hood became the flagship of the series, instead of the 600 models.
The C-class also went through an update: in 2007, the premiere of the new Mercedes W204 in the sedan and station wagon bodies with three performance lines took place.
In 2008, the Mercedes model range was extended with the CLC-class (Comfort-Leicht-Coupe – translated as “light comfortable coupe”).
In the first decade of the 21st century, the Mercedes lineup included GL- and GLK-class SUVs (Gelandewagen-Leicht-Kurz – in translation “shortened light SUV”).
The new E-Class W212 family, launched in early 2009, has made tremendous economic and environmental gains.Instead of gasoline engines with superchargers – engines with a new type of direct injection CGI with twin turbocharging.
Now the buyer associates the German brand Mercedes-Benz with reliability, high quality workmanship and rich history.

Brand history: 130 years Mercedes-Benz
Illustrations provided by the press service of Mercedes-Benz RUS
The Mercedes-Benz brand for car enthusiasts from all over the world is not only one of the most recognizable and important car manufacturers in the world, but directly associated with the very concept of “car”.And this is justified at least by the historical significance of the brand: exactly 130 years ago, the German engineer Karl Benz officially filed a patent for a “vehicle with a gasoline engine”.
The event that marked the beginning of the history of not only the German brand, but the entire world auto industry, took place on January 29, 1886. It was on this day that a German engineer and innovator by the name of Benz received a patent No. 37435 for his creation – the world’s first car with a gasoline engine.
Of course, Benz’s invention was very different from the modern image of the car: in fact, he installed a four-stroke engine he had developed from scratch on a tricycle.
In the same year, independently of Benz, design engineer Gottlieb Daimler created his motorized crew. Daimler assembled a single cylinder of a four-stroke internal combustion engine. It had to be installed in carriages. In developing the new technology, Daimler was assisted by engineer Wilhelm Maybach.
Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach
engineers and partners BothBenz founded Benz & Cie in Mannheim in October 1883, and Daimler founded the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) brand in November 1890. From 1901, Daimler’s company began producing cars under the Mercedes brand.
The legendary brand got its name from the nickname of the daughter of the Austrian businessman Emil Jellinek named Adriana (Mercedes is the girl’s nickname). Her father, Honorary Vice Consul in Monaco, was wealthy and interested in modern technology. At his request, in 1897, Gottlieb Daimler installed a six-horsepower two-cylinder engine on the vehicle. After the success of this project, he ordered 4 more copies and sold them at a profit.
The same “Mercedes”
The first “Mercedes” was the 35 HP model, produced in 1901. It had a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of almost 6 liters. and a capacity of 35 hp. The car was characterized by a wide wheelbase, low center of gravity and an inclined steering column.
Another distinctive feature of the brand is a honeycomb cooler. The car weighed 900 kg and had a top speed of 80 km / h. The design of the model was developed by Wilhelm Maybach himself.

The merger of the two most famous German manufacturers at that time took place in 1926. Thanks to the deal, the industrialists not only managed to withstand the difficult post-war times, but also significantly expand their business.
The united concern received the name “Daimler-Benz AG”, and another outstanding German designer Ferdinand Porsche became the first leader, and later – the creator of another legendary Porsche brand.
All cars produced after the merger of the companies were named Mercedes-Benz, in honor of the most successful car of the company and its creator Karl Benz.
The Daimler-Benz AG logo becomes a three-pointed star, framed by a wreath – the legacy of the Benz logo.In the future, this wreath will be turned into an ordinary circle, which is still used today. One of the simplest (and most recognizable) logos in history has become a symbol of luxury and wealth.

The partnership between Benz and Daimler turned out to be one of the longest in the history of the automotive industry, as both companies in this combination survived until 1998. Their first joint car was the K.
The Mercedes CCK and SSKL, designed by Hans Niebel, were also born.In addition to the typical sporty versions, the manufacturer also offers convertibles and production models with a body adapted to the rally.
Daimler-Benz AG produces one legendary car series after another. Thus, under the leadership of Ferdinand Porsche, the “S” series, a new generation of sports cars, appeared. The most famous car and the progenitor of the S-series was the car, which is popularly nicknamed the “Death Trap”. Having received the name “Mercedes-Benz 24/100/140”, the car had a powerful six-cylinder engine and developed a high speed for those times – up to 140 km / h.
The model 18/80 HP, known as the Nürburg 460 (1928), equipped with an eight-cylinder engine with a displacement of 4622 cc, also received fame. cm and a maximum power of 80 liters. with. at 3400 rpm; roadsters 500K and 540K (30s) and a 770 called Grosser Mercedes, whose first generation was created from 1930 to 1938. The Second World War almost destroyed the business of Daimler-Benz AG. All production facilities of the company were practically destroyed. Factories in Stuttgart, Sindelfingen and Mannheim have literally been reduced to rubble. In 1945, after the final meeting of the board of directors, a report was even issued, the result of which was the idea that the Daimler-Benz concern no longer existed.
However, despite all the difficulties, Daimler-Benz AG recovered quite quickly and in 1947 launched the 170 model, which had an engine capacity of 1767 m³, 4 cylinders and a power of 52 hp. with. The car that was completely different from the previous models was the Mercedes 300 – a limousine formed on a frame with crossed beams. In 1998, Mercedes buys out the shares of the American company Chrysler. As a result, Daimler-Benz acquired the chance to gain wider access to the US market. This agreement changed the corporate name of the company to Daimler Chrysler, and the partnership lasted for almost 10 years. The decision to break the partnership was influenced by the poor financial condition of Chrysler. After the sale of the shares of the American concern, the company returns the name to Daimler AG.
Today the company produces Mercedes A, B, C and E models. The brand’s modern cars are renowned for their safety and are still considered the most prestigious in the world. The Mercedes S Class even entered the Guinness Book of Records as “the most durable car ever produced.”
Andrey Rodionov, Head of the Corporate Communication Department of Mercedes-Benz RUS JSC
– When 130 years ago Karl Benz applied for a patent for a “vehicle powered by a gasoline engine” it meant the birth of a car. In the same year, Gottlieb Daimler created his own car. Thus began the 130-year history of Mercedes-Benz success, we entered the age of speed and the world auto industry was born.
The patent became part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Program, among such well-known works as the Gutenberg Bible, Magna Carta and Symphony No. 9 in D minor by J.S. Bach. And it is no coincidence: the inventions of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, thanks to their ingenuity and entrepreneurial flair, revolutionized the field of movement, opening up new opportunities for people.
Today’s innovation is based on the same values as 130 years ago: safety, comfort, efficiency and a belief in success. Thanks to them, the brand demonstrates dynamic growth in global sales, and in Russia at the end of 2015 it is a confident leader in the premium segment. Mercedes-Benz fans are delighted with the premieres expected in Russia – this is a new intelligent E-Class, luxurious GLS, sporty SL and SLC. And, of course, new special offers.
Mercedes-Benz advertising has also always stood out for its signature performance and creativity – the brand has never spared money on marketing.
Advertising of the BlueEFFICIENCY system (the system represents technical solutions to optimize fuel consumption and emissions).
A billboard was placed at Johannesburg Airport, which was originally just a white surface and the Mercedes-Benz logo. After a while, air pollutants accumulated on the billboard, and the message was clearly visible on the white base: “If more cars had BlueEFFICIENCY, you would not be able to read this.”
