DayQuil: Info to Know

Introduction

If you want an all-in-one product for symptoms of the common cold and flu that also won’t put you to sleep, DayQuil Cold & Flu may get the job done. Learn how it works, the forms it comes in and the dosages for each, as well as what you should watch out for before and while you take it.

DayQuil Cold & Flu is a combination product that contains the active ingredients acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, and phenylephrine. It temporarily treats symptoms of the common cold and flu. These symptoms include:

  • fever
  • cough
  • nasal congestion
  • minor aches and pains
  • headache
  • sore throat

DayQuil is made for use during the day. Unlike NyQuil, it doesn’t contain the active ingredient doxylamine, which is an antihistamine that can make you feel drowsy.

How does it work?

Acetaminophen is a fever reducer and a pain reliever. It works by changing the way your body senses pain. It also changes how your body regulates its temperature. Dextromethorphan suppresses your urge to cough. The third ingredient, phenylephrine, is a nasal decongestant. It reduces the swelling of the blood vessels in your nasal passages.

What are the forms and dosages?

DayQuil comes in liquid-filled capsules called LiquiCaps. It also comes as a liquid that you drink. The following table lists the recommended dosage for each form by age group. Ask your doctor for the correct dosage for children ages 4 to 5 years, and don’t give DayQuil to children who are younger than 4 years.

DayQuil can cause some unwanted side effects. Most of these side effects don’t need medical attention. Rather, they may go away as your body adjusts to the medication. You can ask your doctor about any mild side effects you have that are bothersome or don’t go away.

More common side effects

The more common side effects of DayQuil can include:

  • lightheadedness
  • drowsiness
  • stomach pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • nervousness
  • dizziness
  • trouble sleeping

Also, avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking this drug. Grapefruit juice might increase the levels of dextromethorphan, one of the ingredients in DayQuil. Higher levels increase your chance of side effects such as nervousness and dizziness.

Serious side effects

One serious side effect of DayQuil is an allergic reaction. Symptoms include:

  • rash
  • hives
  • itching
  • red, peeling, or blistering skin
  • itchiness
  • difficulty breathing
  • trouble swallowing
  • swelling of your face, throat, tongue, or lips
  • swelling of your hands, legs, ankles, or feet

Contact your doctor right away or get emergency medical help if you have any of these symptoms while taking DayQuil.

The active ingredients in DayQuil can interact with other drugs. These interactions may affect the way the drugs work or increase your risk of harmful side effects. If you use the drugs listed below or any other drugs, supplements, or herbs, check with your doctor before using DayQuil.

The acetaminophen in DayQuil can interact with the following drugs:

  • carbamazepine
  • isoniazid
  • phenobarbital
  • phenytoin
  • phenothiazines
  • warfarin

The phenylephrine and dextromethorphan in DayQuil can interact with drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Even if you’ve stopped taking MAOIs, interactions can still occur if you’ve used them within the past two weeks. Examples of these drugs include:

  • isocarboxazid
  • phenelzine
  • selegiline
  • tranylcypromine

Also, don’t use DayQuil if you drink more than three alcoholic drinks per day. This combination can cause serious liver damage.

Generally, DayQuil is a safe drug to use. However, it can cause harmful effects if you have certain medical conditions, use too much of it, or misuse it.

Use with certain medical conditions

DayQuil can make some medical conditions worse. Talk to your doctor before using DayQuil if you have any of the following conditions:

  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • liver disease
  • thyroid disease
  • an enlarged prostate that makes it hard to urinate

Overuse

Taking too much DayQuil can cause significant liver damage from too much acetaminophen. Make sure that none of the other drugs you take also contain acetaminophen. Even if you take DayQuil as recommended, taking it with other drugs that contain acetaminophen could cause an overdose.

If you do accidently take too much, contact your local poison control center, even if you don’t immediately notice any severe signs or symptoms. If someone you know has taken too much DayQuil or acetaminophen and has passed out, call 911.

Misuse

DayQuil can be misused. Do not use DayQuil to treat a productive cough or a chronic cough from smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema. Instead, ask your doctor about how to relieve these types of coughs.

The ingredient dextromethorphan in DayQuil is a commonly misused drug. At high doses, it cause a high feeling and even hallucinations. This dangersou misuse is called “robo-tripping” or “skittling” and can potentially result in death. Only take DayQuil at a safe dosage.

Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before you take DayQuil. Your doctor may suggest other ways to treat your cold and flu symptoms.

DayQuil treats many symptoms of the common cold and flu. The three active ingredients work in different ways to help you feel better. All of these ingredients can cause side effects, interact with other drugs, or affect certain medical conditions.

Follow the information here to help you use DayQuil safely. When in doubt, always check with your doctor before using a drug.

Scientists have proven that daytime sleep helps to maintain a sharp mind

Regular daytime sleep helps to maintain a sharp mind into old age, scientists have found. However, doctors advise not to abuse it: it is recommended to doze off during the day for no more than half an hour, and wake up no later than 16.00, otherwise you can get up with a headache and in a depressed state. “Gazeta.Ru” – about the rules of daytime sleep.

Scientists have called daytime sleep one of the ways to prolong life and maintain cognitive abilities until old age. This is reported in a study published in the journal General Psychiatry.

Researchers studied the sleep patterns of more than 2,000 healthy people over the age of 60.

Those 1500 people who regularly slept during the day from 5 minutes to 2 hours showed better results on dementia tests than the other 700. They were better at orienting themselves in space, their speech was more fluent, and their memory was stronger.

In addition to reducing sleepiness, daytime sleep in some cases strengthens memory, increases learning ability, improves some bodily functions and has a beneficial effect on emotional stability, the researchers note. However, in some cases, daytime naps may be a symptom of dementia rather than a prevention, they add. So “quiet time” is not shown to everyone, and its benefits are associated with the particular characteristics of people.

Thus, those who regularly slept during the day were found to have higher levels of triglycerides. This led scientists to believe that the desire to sleep in the afternoon was associated with some risk factors for cardiovascular disease. One of the theories behind the study is that sleep regulates the body’s immune response, an evolved response to inflammation. That is why people in whose body there are active inflammatory processes sleep more.

The quality of sleep really affects cognitive abilities, says Yana Akinkina, a psychologist and YouTalk service consultant. “But if a person gets enough sleep at night and at the same time sleeps well, he does not have to additionally sleep during the day,” the specialist explains. “If a person does not sleep well at night and does not feel rested in the morning or does not sleep enough at all, then it will be useful to take a nap during the day.”

The doctor warns that it is advisable to sleep during the day before 4 pm, since after this time it is difficult to wake up – it starts to get dark, melatonin is produced in the body, because of which, upon waking up, you can feel overwhelmed.

At the same time, it is enough to sleep for an hour and a half, during which time a full cycle of sleep passes (from two phases – deep and superficial sleep). Sleeping longer during the day only makes sense if you haven’t slept half the night, Akinkina adds.

“In the process of daytime sleep, cerebrospinal fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, is produced, which washes the brain, bringing it moisture, nutrients and neurotransmitters, including serotonin,” says Maria Skryabina, psychiatrist, expert at the National Strategic Forum “Family Council”. “In the first 20 minutes of daytime sleep, mood and energy levels rise.” She does not advise sleeping longer than half an hour: after 30 minutes, a deep sleep phase begins, all processes slow down, parasympathetics are activated, as a result of which the body relaxes. “It will take at least two hours to activate it again,” the doctor says. “As a result, instead of a surge of strength, you can feel overwhelmed and depressed.”

Gosha Semyonov, head of Blue Sleep, agrees with her. “Many people after a daytime sleep can feel even more overwhelmed, complain of pain in the head and neck, cannot tune in to work, and fall asleep at night,” the expert says.

He believes that too long a daytime nap – more than an hour – as well as lack of sleep, can slow down the reaction to a state resembling strong alcohol intoxication, and also increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

“If you are healthy, then you most likely do not need regular daytime sleep,” says Semyonov. – If during the day you constantly need a long rest – this is probably the reason to see a doctor. If you feel that you have not slept at night and you have the opportunity to lie down and take a nap during the day, it is advisable that your sleep does not last more than 30 minutes. During this time, you will not have time to move from a state of superficial sleep to a deeper sleep and will be able to wake up easily enough.

Children need more sleep than adults, so they often have a quiet time. There are also people who need daytime sleep due to their work schedule: they are awake at night and sleep during the day. “In general, such a sleep regimen can compensate for daytime sleep deprivation, the body will also recover, but it’s still worth understanding that such a regimen is not natural for our body,” explains the head of Blue Sleep.

For daytime sleep, he advises to create the illusion of darkness: use a sleep mask or blackout curtains. “It is better to ventilate the room, and to make the awakening as comfortable as possible, you can drink a cup of strong tea or coffee before going to daytime sleep. Caffeine will begin to act in 20-25 minutes, and it will be easier to wake up, ”recommends Semenov.

Some politicians, due to busy schedules, often use this knowledge to make up for a lack of sleep at night. So, Margaret Thatcher was famous for the fact that during her term as Prime Minister of Great Britain she slept only four hours a day. President Donald Trump is also known for sleeping 3-4 hours a night. Barack Obama, he says, gets enough sleep in six hours.

Last week in media there were reports that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson turned out to be a fan of half an hour nap during the working day. However, his spokeswoman denied this information.

Winston Churchill, as you know, slept for 4-5 hours at night, and filled up the missing 90 minutes during the day.

Awareness of the benefits of daytime naps is leading some companies to launch beds and nap pods. So, Google and many other IT companies in Silicon Valley have had similar capsules for employees for 10 years, who sometimes have to stay at work until late in the evening and at night.

  • Is daytime sleep harmful for adults: scientific studies on the topic

  • Is it harmful to sleep too little and sleep too much

  • Sleep hygiene

Children’s quiet time is a common occurrence. The child needs rest during the day. Adults get tired too, but often deny themselves a break, and most working people do not have the opportunity to take a nap at noon. Today we will analyze whether daytime sleep is harmful, what different studies say and what conclusions can be drawn.

Is it harmful to sleep during the day for an adult: what science says

Many researchers have dealt with sleep problems, but the data obtained are contradictory. Undoubtedly, this topic will be repeatedly studied until reliable results are obtained and an understanding of the relationship between sleep and the state of the body is obtained. The possibilities of the body are not fully understood, in addition, it is necessary to take into account the individual needs of the body and genetics. For example: for one person, 4 hours of healthy sleep is enough to feel alert all day, for another, 8 hours will be not enough. In many ways, the need for sleep is determined by hereditary predisposition: if your ancestors needed rest for at least 7 hours, then it will be problematic to deceive the body and learn how to recover in 6-5 hours.

Is it harmful for adults to sleep during the day and what scientists have found out about sleep:

  • Shanghai scientists studied the cognitive abilities of more than 2000 patients over 60 years old. Patients who slept during the day performed better on attentiveness and orientation tests, and improved working memory performance. The beneficial effects of afternoon naps have been established, although the study did not answer why the subjects had improved performance. Presumably, sleep helps fight inflammation that builds up over time.
  • According to American studies, a daytime sleep of about 30-90 minutes had a positive effect on concentration.
  • Greek scientists found that napping 2 times a week helps to reduce the likelihood of developing coronary artery disease by 13%, if you increase episodes of afternoon naps to 3 per week, the risk of the disease is reduced by another 34%.

The results are encouraging and almost completely answer the question of whether it is harmful to sleep during the day for an adult. It is not necessary to sleep every day after dinner – even 2-3 episodes per week have a positive effect on the body, that is, you can fully sleep on weekends.

Is it harmful to get enough sleep and sleep too much?

What the science says:

  • If you live in a noisy area, you will need more time to get enough sleep. In a rural quiet area, you will sleep in less time.
  • According to a number of studies (data from 460 thousand people were studied), short sleep increases the likelihood of developing a myocardial infarction by 20% compared with those who slept 6-9 hours. On the other hand, too much sleep (more than 9 hours) was also harmful – the risk of an attack increased by 34%.
  • In people at risk of developing CVD, the likelihood of disease progression was reduced by 18% if a night’s sleep was 6-9 hours.
  • Russian scientists came to the conclusion that 5 hours of sleep have the same effect as 8 hours, and people who slept for 7 hours live longer. Moreover, sleep lasting more than 9 hours was considered dangerous in all studies.

Modern man, paradoxically, sleeps much less than his predecessors, namely 6.5 hours. The previous generation gave 8 hours of sleep a night, and people who lived in the early 20th century, 10 hours, although it’s hard to believe.

Sleep hygiene

Healthy sleep is absolutely necessary for all people, especially patients with a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

How to sleep properly:

  • Sleep in the dark. Even low lighting from nightlights and a working TV increases the likelihood of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Volunteers who fell asleep even in dim light experienced increased heart rate and insulin resistance, according to a US study. Light deceives the brain, slows down the production of melatonin. If a lantern shines through the window, take care of thick curtains.
  • Discard the tracker if it increases anxiety and leads to over-control of sleep. If the gadget gives the result that you slept worse, and this affects your emotional state, it is better to use other methods: meditation, light sedatives.
  • Remove the smartphone from the bedroom. Studies have shown that people fall asleep worse if you leave your phone in the room, even if you do not use it.
