this was awful. i had horrible cramps every time i had to use the bathroom. i’ve been so nauseous i haven’t enjoyed eating for weeks. i’m not interested in doing the things that i enjoy because i always feels exhausted. i also broke out with THE worst red chin acne. i never get acne on my chin. i also have had BV and a yeast infection for 2 weeks! this honestly scarred me from even wanting to try another form of birth control

My 16 yr old was using Xulane to help control horrible menstrual cramps. Shortly after starting the patch, she had headaches, that overtime, have become more frequent and painful, along with nausea and blurred vision. i was on the patch for maybe a month back in june, and i am still experiencing side effects! there were many moment while on xulane that i wished death onto myself. it made my mood swings ridiculous, i always felt nauseous, it made my anxiety ten times worse… i could go on.

I wasn’t using this to prevent against pregnancy. I was told to use this to help me manage my painful cramps I’d get on my period. I loved how easy it was to put a patch on rather than take a pill. Not even after 2 days of wearing this I had extreme vomiting, diarrhea, NO appetite, sporadic headaches, fatigue, and gas. I took the patch off and went to bed and by morning some of my symptoms started to ease. My stomach is still sore from throwing up and I still have very little appetite. My first period with Xulane took me from 3-4 days of extreme pain to one single day of mild cramps that could be managed without painkillers and some hot flashes. After the sixth week of use, however, I was struck with severe chronic nausea akin to morning sickness, on the brink of vomiting, shaking, hot flashes, headaches and complete loss of appetite to the point that I could not sleep for 5 days before I removed the patch. Loved the patch, but had to take it off after two years of using it bc it made my blood pressure increase 🙁 I started using it in 2020 and lost 30lbs within the first three months! This was amazing for me because I have PCOS, so I’ve always struggled with my weight. My periods used to either come ever 2 weeks or every 2 months, but the patch regulated my cycle! It also made my periods lighter. I would always get my period on a Thursday. One Of the only cons I have is that it gave me migraines all the time. At least once a week. At first they wouldn’t go away unless I napped, but towards the end they wouldn’t go away until the next day. Another con is that it made my blood pressure high. I didn’t feel any side effects of high blood pressure tho. The biggest con for me was my mental health. I was fine in 2020 and 2021 but I noticed that in 2022 I became very depressed. I have been on Xulane for about 3 months and I’m already sick of this. Sure, it works but the side effects are awful. I have been waking up the past 3 weeks, sick to my stomach, pounding headaches, the shakes, overheating, no period. Meanwhile I am sexually active, I have taken 5 tests that all came back negative so I know it’s not pregnancy symptoms I’m going through. I would get debilitating cramps that would leave me weak and shaking in pain. I haven’t gotten my period in a month and a half while on this and that might seem like the dream, but I can assure you this is a nightmare. I love this thing! This is the first birth control I’ve ever tried and so far I’ve had minimal side effects (the ones I do have are just mildly annoying.) One of the things I love most is that I can skip my period! It’s so easy to use and so far i haven’t had any issues whatsoever with it coming off or wrinkling. I always make sure to shave the area first before applying and put clear tegaderm over it to keep it on. I take a shower every day and don’t have any issues with it lifting because of the tegaderm. The side effects aren’t that bad and only last a few days anyway. I’ve had nausea, mild anxiety, swollen breasts but no pain at all, and a little bit of itchiness but that goes away after a few minutes. I haven’t gained any weight or had mood swings and my libido isn’t affected at all. Overall thought I think the benefits far outweigh the side effects. They’re pretty expensive without insurance so I just use coupons to get them for about $50 a pack. Very worth it to me!Read More Read Less

Was on Xulane for 7 months, will not use again. It first gave me nausea, that went away after about 2 months but then the headaches started. It made me on edge everyday. It made my face have lots of dark spots. Made my fine hair on my body and face overgrow. To make things worse it cause me to gain so much weight. I gained more weight than after I had my baby. I had to get off and switch to the pill. Now fee so much better, even the mental fog is gone.

I have very regular period. I can almost tell you the day I’ll start every month. I got switched to Xulane. I just ripped off my third patch from the first round of it because for the past 13 days I have been MISERABLE. I woke up so bloated I looked pregnant. In two weeks I have gained over 10 lbs. I have random black and brown discharge and blood clots. I have been having the worst abdominal pain. I went to the doctors…had to get a transvaginal ultrasound, a regular ultrasound…and next week blood work. I just started the third month of Xulane and I’m waiting to the end of this box to decide if I’m going to stay on it. There are a lot of pros and cons.
PROS
Don’t have to remember to take it every day
Easy to use and sticks well
Have not gotten pregnant, have had lots of sex
Doesn’t have some of the psychological side effects I’ve gotten from the pill
Shorter periods
For the *first month only*, my libido was normal and actually increased a little
CONS
Lots of back acne that I’ve never had before — I place the patch on my upper back/shoulder and I get acne all over my whole back now which I didn’t have before
Severe stomach issues that come and go: the first month I was only nauseous the second week. The second month, I was nauseous for the whole month and couldn’t stop burping and sometimes dry heaving. I could barely eat because food would make me even more sick so I could only eat very bland food like white bread.
After my off week, the nausea stopped; I’m on the third month now and just waiting to see if it comes back. If it does, I’ll quit the patch.
And the last con is that my sex drive is decreased. I still want to have sex with my main partner, but 1- sex is about 20% less enjoyable with him since my libido is decreased. I’m normally very passionate and fiery but the patch dialed it way down. 🙁
2- we are non monogamous and although I feel the desire to have sex with my main partner, I’m finding other partners less desirable. That is an unwanted side effect as I am wanting to explore and my partner wants to explore with me.
If the nausea doesn’t stop and if my libido doesn’t return to normal then this will be my last month on the patch.Read More Read Less

I have been on Xulane for almost 10 years. I realized just how great of a product it was after my insurance switch me to Zafemy. Zafemy is terrible. Xulane does its job by sticking on properly. I am a tennis player so sweating is inevitable. It has never slid off and it has never given me side effects. It’s a really great product.

Used Xulane for about a year, then my doctor switched me to Zafemy because of insurance. I was about ready to give up on the patch until I found Twirla. It sticks great and works. Apparently Twirla is the newest patch on the market and isnt available everywhere yet, but with how good it works, I’m sure it will be soon.

I had no problem with this birth control until they changed the packaging and the patch itself. i only get 3 patches a month and every time i would get into water, the patch would come off without me touching it at all.. i would go through all 3 patches in a week and wouldn’t be able to get any until the next month. when i get on any form of birth control, i expect it to work at least this is ridiculous.

I started this because my periods were super irregular.. I’ve been using it for a year and I loved how it worked until I grew to be incredibly unhappy with my body and how I looked and I narrowed it down to the birth control. I’ve always been small, I was active all throughout middle school and high school. My first year of college, I struggled greatly with my irregular periods and the fear of being pregnant at a young age so I decided in June 2020 to start birth control. I was on this patch for one and a half weeks after switching from Mirena and I felt like I couldnt control my emotions. I felt very depressed and cried pretty often. I felt crazy and irrationaly hostile so I peeled it off during my second week.

I’m am 19 years old and I started using the patch july of 2020 at first everything was fine little to no sude affects just very swollen tender breast but that didn’t bother me and I was inconsistent with it due to the fact that my boyfriend was back home and I was in college September-February I was finally consistently using it and I had symptoms as of I was pregnant nauseous all the time seaplane tender breast headache loss of appetite and worst of all painful recurrent year infection and I’ve never had a yeast infection on my life before using the patch which made it also very annoying for me and my boyfriend because I was always having discomfort down there from yeast infection meaning little to no sex this was a terrible experience for me but maybe you can try it out for yourself to see what works for your body

Only used this birth control patch for two months and I had an allergic reaction. First it wouldn’t stay in the spot placed so I ended up having to use patch 2 and 3. Secondly I am light skinned and when I would remove the patch, it would leave a dark black spot and then I began experiencing itchy pustules afterwards.

It worked grate. like any birth control you will be irregular when you start taking it. although everyone’s body reacts differently to different things. My period was at a constant light flow for about a month and then it got on a schedule. i know the exact day my period will start. i have less to no cramps. i had horrible acne and it helped tremendously. and most importantly i haven’t gotten pregnant ????

On the patch for 3 months. First month was great. Skipped the period. 2-3 months have been non-stop spotting, some acne. Breasts weee awful the first few weeks but that went away. I started the patch to lighten my period which it did but I can’t deal with the constant lighter bleeding. Took the patch off on Wednesday night and have been bleeding he’s only ever since. Not worth the side effects. Would rather have heavy periods but be consistent than constantly bleeding. So disappointed.

I’m on the patch because I’m have PMDD and endometriosis. It’s not perfect, sometimes I have pain and my depression is still kinda bad around my period, but I lost 20lbs cause I had more energy to just workout, my skin cleared up and my periods are barely noticeable and usually take some turmeric when I’m in pain and that’s it. It’s not perfect but it’s helped me ALOT. Completely changed my quality of life.

So I’ve been on this for 3 months now. The first 2 months have gone mostly well. I was on the pill for 3 years and got off because I kept forgetting to take it. I realize now my periods are extremely heavy because of the patch. It’s easy to use and everything but now I’m starting to notice some scary side effects…. every Sunday I change the patch so on mondays I wake up so sick.. it’s been happening every Monday. This is my 4th month I believe taking Xulane the first few months were fine not too many side effects but I have had extreme nausea , mood swings and after a few uses where I apply my patch it gets extremely itchy and red and leaves skin that leaks clear liquid then eventually extemely dry skin . Also alot of vaginal dryness and hardly any sex drive .

Incredibly convenient provided your not in water a long time and it comes off, regular periods. I took it off after realizing how high the hormone levels are and that my discharge had become thick, weird smelling, and felt glue-like. Test for yeast infection always negative, praying it’ll become normal again!

Been on the patch 10-2020 at first everything was ok. Since December I’ve noticed my periods are becoming irregular. I’ll get extremely heavy periods for about 6 days it’ll end for 3 days and spot 3 more days. I’ve also been having issues reaching an orgasm since being on the patch. I’m 26 and was on the pill from 12-20 for irregular periods and bad cramping. I stopped taking bc due to moodiness/depression, but my cramps and heavy bleeding have been so bad the last 6 months I started this patch to help. It is HORRIBLE. I have been on it for 3 weeks. The patch was okay until I had to take an antibiotic. This led to a yeast infection that would come back once a month at the same time each month. The patch also made me eat a crazy amount, and break out horribly on my cheeks, back, chest, and even neck. I didn’t realize just how emotional and angry it was making me until I stopped taking it. It is a much easier way to have birth control, but the side effects were just too much for me. There is a lot of estrogen, so do your research before starting! Everybody’s body reacts differently.

I have been on the pill and the shot and have by far had the best experience using Xulane. It is incredibly easy to use. I have depression and do have some increased mood side effects on the patch but it is MUCH more manageable than it was with other forms of birth control. Some additional side effects I have noticed are my breast have grown the slightest bit and my appetite has decreased (not 100% sure on if that is due to the patch though). I take it off for a week every couple months because otherwise I have break through bleeding. Overall this is the best one I have tried and I am satisfied with it.

Im on my fourth week of xulane , so with that being said I had the patch on first 3 weeks , no patch this 4th week. First week and a half – rollarcoaster of emotions , nauseated most of the days, no ovarian pain -good (I have cysts). 2nd week into the third ? My emotions have literally put me in a black hole mindstate, Im easily ticked off and sensitive . Put on a couple of pounds but I think that’s due to my breast being tender and enlarged . Because I’ve had Less of an appetite, has me eating all at once or not at all . My period has hit 2nd day off the patch , Very light but cramps are horrible . I will be continuing but I have more downsides to this contraceptive.

The first two months were fine. No period with continuous use. Cleared my oily skin and I lost 20 pounds. The third month I started getting bloated and cramping. Started bleeding slow brown blood. It would not stop. I decided it was my body’s way of telling me I needed a period week. Next month took my patch off for period week that is supposed to last 7 days. No period came. I wanted Xulane to work for me so bad! So bad that I took it for 6 months KNOWING I HATED IT. My cramps are so bad I was willing to try anything for relief. My first few months were TERRIBLE! I had the WORSE breast pain I’ve experienced in my life. I couldn’t sleep on them, lean over or even run because they were sooo tender & it just hurt too bad. That was the first red flag. Second I had terrible mood swings. I would be happy one moment & crying the next. I wasn’t all there mentally . THE ICING ON THE CAKE!!! Xulane is used in 3 week cycles (no period) and you leave it off for one week and that’s when you get your period. Xulane literally worked backwards. I had a PERIOD for 3-4 weeks straight, it would go off for anywhere between 2-7 days & come right back! I thought my body just had to adjust at first but after 6 months, nothing changed besides my breast not being tender . It’s easy to use & convenient but I will never try it again. I’m 24 & my body reacted terribly but again everyone’s body is different. Just be careful !

I was looking for a birth control that is more toddler(s) mama friendly. Our daily schedule is so unpredictable, I figured a once weekly patch would help me with adherence, and with 2 kids under 3, we are not ready for another one yet. The first month was tough. I was nauseated all the time, like first trimester nauseated. I had pregnancy-like food cravings. I was moody and tired all the time, regardless of whether or not I had a good night sleep, also reminded me of first trimester symptoms. I figured vfc the second month, my body would react better. It was terrible!!! Only a week after I had a full on mental breakdown. I had anxiety and depressive attacks. I turned into a whole different person. I’m a really positive person and it completely made me depressed and crazy. I acted insane and almost ruined my relationship with my boyfriend. Sadly it took me a month of hell to put it together that it was the patch. I also had headaches and bad bad bad bloating and bad acne in forehead. It was terrible. I was only able to use this for 2 in a half weeks, it was to intense. For me I had the iud before for 2 years. I started this and during the first week I had a lot of discharge, then move to the second week and I was EXTREMELY swollen and red with pain and itching. It was like a yeast infection times 10. I have been on the patch for almost a month now. It has been HELL. I’ve used oral contraception in the past but most recently the implant in your arm, nexplanon, which I LOVED. I just wanted something with more freedom to stop if I wanted without a doctors visit. This month I have experienced constant cramping and back pain despite exercise, heating pads and pamprin around the clock. I’m usually waken up by cramps NIGHTLY. I’ve also experienced nausea and extreme bloating. I also suffer from anxiety and depression which I have been on medication for for years. So I started Xulane about two years ago when I was 16 because of a lack of periods, and the fact that my hormone levels were off. From what I remember, when I first started using it I gained ten pounds in a couple of months, but it had seemed to help with acne a lot, and it is very easy to use. There was a point where I had stopped using as I began to feel so bad, I’m not sure if it was the patch or another health problem I was dealing with, but I put it back on after about three months, and it’s affected me in a different way. So last year I took anxiety meds because I would have almost daily panic attacks. The medication never mixed well with my periods. Once I stopped taking that I started using Xulane.
