Hangover cures: Most effective home remedies

A hangover can leave someone with fatigue, nausea, and muscle aches. People swear by certain hangover cures, but do home remedies really help?

Drinking alcohol can cause fatigue, nausea, brain fog, and low mood the next day. People who are experiencing a hangover feel these symptoms partly because of the after-effects of drinking alcohol, including:

  • dehydration
  • electrolyte imbalances
  • alcohol withdrawal
  • low blood sugar
  • stomach and intestine inflammation
  • sleep disturbances

Home hangover cures aim to treat these symptoms. There is no specific food, drink, or magic pill to cure a hangover, though certain remedies can ease the symptoms in some people.

In this article, we look at the effectiveness of some common methods people use to try to cure hangovers.

While there is little direct research into how effective over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are for people with a hangover, certain medicines may help tackle the symptoms, as discussed below.

Do anti-inflammatories help?

Aspirin and other anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, are effective at relieving aches and pains.

These drugs can reduce the inflammation in the body that alcohol causes to relieve headaches and muscle aches.

People should use anti-inflammatories with caution when hungover, as the medication can further irritate the stomach lining. Chronic use of these drugs can lead to stomach ulcers. Some doctors caution against taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach for this reason.

Do antacids help?

Antacids work by neutralizing the stomach acid to relieve an upset stomach. Taking antacids can reduce nausea, heartburn, and indigestion that drinking causes. This is a good option for people who tend to feel sick when hungover.

Does acetaminophen help?

Avoid medication that contains acetaminophen during a hangover.

The liver is the organ that breaks down acetaminophen, as it does alcohol. The body is more susceptible to the toxic effects of acetaminophen when a person drinks alcohol, and this can contribute to liver damage in severe cases.

People may prefer to use anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, for pain relief instead.

Rehydrating the body by drinking water may help to improve the symptoms of a hangover.

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means that it increases the amount of urine a person passes. The resulting loss in fluid can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. These factors contribute to a hangover.

Staying hydrated while drinking alcohol could help to prevent or reduce a hangover. People can try drinking a glass of water between alcoholic drinks and just before bed.

Do rehydration powders help?

Many people also use sports drinks that contain electrolytes or rehydration powders to restore the balance of electrolytes in their bodies. There is no current research about whether or not this is an effective cure for a hangover.

Low blood sugar levels contribute to some hangover symptoms. Eating in the morning helps regulate blood sugar levels to relieve this discomfort partially.

When the body breaks down alcohol, lactic acid levels increase. This causes a drop in blood sugar levels, which can contribute towards a hangover.

Eating breakfast can help to restore blood sugar to a correct level and may improve some symptoms of a hangover.

A person’s body also needs nutritious foods that include protein, carbohydrates, healthful fats, and vitamins to repair and recover.

There is no current research to say that particular foods, such as greasy or fried breakfasts, are more effective than others. Many people believe that carbohydrates are particularly effective for “soaking up” alcohol, though research has not looked into this.

The alcohol a person drinks causes oxidative stress, leading the body to produce free radicals. Antioxidants may help with this.

Research has linked oxidative stress to many health conditions, including heart disease and cancers. Antioxidants are compounds that help mop up these free radicals.

People may benefit from eating foods high in antioxidants to reduce the negative effects of drinking alcohol.

Good dietary sources of antioxidants include:

  • berries
  • cherries
  • grapes
  • pomegranates
  • carrots
  • spinach
  • ginger
  • dark chocolate
  • nuts and seeds
  • green and black teas

Coffee and other caffeinated drinks act as stimulants, which may improve the feelings of fatigue that come with a hangover.

Coffee, black tea, and green tea contain some antioxidants that may reduce the adverse effects of alcohol consumption.

However, drinks that contain caffeine are diuretics, which may worsen the effects of dehydration in the body. Caffeine does not alter a person’s blood alcohol content, so it does not reduce the health risks relating to drinking alcohol.

Despite the prevalence of hangovers, there has been little research into developing effective treatments. Of the studies that are available, most are of low quality and remain inconclusive.

Many factors can affect the severity and length of a person’s hangover, which makes it difficult for scientists to study potential hangover cures. Elements include:

  • the type and amount of alcohol a person drinks
  • how often they drink alcohol
  • sex and age
  • body type
  • biological factors
  • personality differences

Some people may even have a genetic disposition for worse hangovers than others.

Scientists have to rely on people’s self-reported hangover symptoms, which may vary between people and depend on day-to-day factors, and these are very difficult to control scientifically.

The lack of research has left room for a wide range of myths to develop about the best ways to cure a hangover, most of which rely on anecdotal evidence.

Businesses may also make claims about specific cures to sell their products, despite little or no scientific basis.

Share on PinterestEating a meal before drinking alcohol can reduce the effects of a hangover.

While there are no scientifically proven hangover cures, people can effectively prevent a hangover from happening in the first place.

Several factors may help to reduce the severity of a hangover, such as:

  • Drinking in moderation. The one sure way to avoid a hangover is by not drinking alcohol. People can usually guarantee a milder hangover if they drink less alcohol the night before.
  • Avoiding congeners. Some alcoholic drinks produce worse hangovers than others. Drinks with high congener content are more likely to cause a hangover, including whiskey, cognac, and tequila. Vodka, rum, and gin are low-congener drinks.
  • Getting enough sleep. Alcohol can affect the quality of a person’s sleep, so sleeping more may help reduce a hangover.
  • Staying hydrated. Drinking water while drinking alcohol can help counteract the diuretic effects of alcohol to reduce dehydration, which can contribute to headaches and other hangover symptoms.
  • Eating food before drinking. Food can reduce the amount of time it takes for alcohol to enter into the bloodstream, keeping the blood alcohol levels lower. This could reduce the effects of a hangover.

The amount of alcohol that causes a hangover will vary from person to person. As a result, determining how much alcohol causes a hangover will involve some trial and error. It can help to be aware of alcohol guidelines set by the government.

There is currently no such thing as a cure for hangovers. Certain home remedies can help people manage some hangover symptoms, including taking anti-inflammatories or antacids, eating a nutritious breakfast, rehydrating, and eating foods that are rich in antioxidants.

However, there is little reliable research in this area. Until more systematic research is available, it is not possible to provide firm guidelines on dealing with hangovers.

Abstaining or drinking alcohol in moderation is the best way to avoid a hangover. People can reduce the severity of or prevent a hangover by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated through the night, and avoiding drinks with congeners.

Home remedies to overcome a hangover

We bring you some effective home remedies, from experts to overcome hangover…

Christmas and New Year are just around the corner and the party mood has set in! It’s that time of the year when even those who usually don’t indulge in heavy drinking tend to go overboard. And the repercussions of the over indulgence can be anything from a pounding headache, queasiness, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound, muscle ache or irritability.

Well, do not fret, as we bring you some effective home remedies, from experts to overcome hangover and save you from turning your night’s fun into next morning’s nightmare!

Hangover dealers: Apples and bananas

Eating raw fruits or having a fresh and crunchy fruit salad is an effective way of treating hangovers. Apples and bananas in particular work as effective hangover cures.

Do it at home: Dr. R.K. Sharma, medical officer, JMT Dehradun, suggests “In case of a headache, having an apple on an empty stomach lends fast relief. A banana shake with a tablespoon of honey is a good option. It not only relaxes your stomach and nerves but the honey present in the fruit shake resumes the lost blood-sugar, while the banana helps in regaining essential minerals like potassium, which the body loses due to alcohol.”

Hangover dealer: Honey

Honey is one of the simplest and easily available home remedies. It has potent powers to neutralise the harmful effects of alcohol, thanks to the presence of fructose, which competes with the metabolism of alcohol. Honey also helps in the digestion of alcohol inside a person’s body.

Do it at home: Dr. M.P. Mani, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, suggests, “Taking 3-4 teaspoons of honey after an interval of one hour helps in digesting alcohol. However, the quantity of honey maybe increased if the hangover is acute and severe. You can also prepare a classic ‘hot-toddy’ with honey. Just boil one cup of water, add honey and lemon juice to taste and it’s ready! This hot toddy works well to treat a hangover. At the same time it is easy to make and tasty. You can enjoy the toddy several times in a day as it replenishes fluids and sugar lost in a hangover”.

Hangover dealer: Ginger

Ginger is a tried and tested treatment for nausea and seasickness. And that’s why it is considered as one of the best home remedies for a hangover. Ginger gives fast relief by assisting in the digestion of alcohol, thus soothing the stomach.

Do it at home: “Chewing 2-3 small pieces of ginger or taking a cup of ginger tea lends fast relief. In addition, you can prepare a brew by boiling 10 to 12 slices of fresh ginger root in 4 cups of water for ten minutes. Now, add the juice of one orange, 1/2 lemon and 1/2 cup of honey to it. This concoction helps stabilise blood sugar, which is usually low after alcohol consumption”, suggests Dr. Sharma.

Hangover dealer: Peppermint

Peppermint is a very helpful herb. Consume with your tea or chew it as this relaxes the intestines. Peppermint is a carminative, which is a substance that removes accumulated gas from the stomach and intestines.

Do it at home: “Patients suffering from a hangover should be given 3-5 leaves of peppermint. You can also use it as tea by pouring one cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of the dried herb or 5-10 leaves of peppermint. One or two cups of this preparation will do the trick,” suggests Dr. Mani.

Hangover dealer: Lemon

Lemon juice or lemon tea is a popular home remedy for hangovers. It helps to assimilate alcohol and perovides instant relief. The best trait of lemon is that it makes a gentle medicine that can be taken on a possibly upset stomach.

Do it at home: Dr. Mani adds, “Prepare lemon-tea, but do not add sugar to it. Lemon -rich tea detoxifies the stomach of unwanted materials. On the other hand, fresh lemon juice prepared in cold water with little sugar also gives fast relief. This drink controls the sugar level in the blood after an excess intake of alcohol.”

Hangover dealer: Tomato

Tomato juice contains fructose, a type of sugar that helps your body metabolise alcohol faster. This is why dehydration caused due to a hangover can be compensated by taking freshly prepared tomato juice or soup.

Do it at home: “The sour taste of tomato has a great effect in curing hangover. You can prepare tomato juice and add fresh lemon juice to it for fast relief,” tells Dr. Sharma.

Hangover dealer: Lime

Lime is the answer to queasiness, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound and all kinds of muscle aches caused due to excessive alcohol intake. It offers vitamin C which stabilises your blood sugar levels.

Do it at home: Dr. Sharma, suggests, “As soon as you wake up, prepare a mixture of two teaspoons of lime water, a teaspoon of sugar and 1/2 cup of water. Drink it slowly and it will stabilise the blood sugar.”

Hangover dealer: Cabbage

The ancient Greeks and Romans placed great importance on the healing powers of cabbage. They would eat large quantities of cabbage at night before drinking, as this would allow them to drink more alcoholic beverages without feeling the side effects. Perhaps this is why many consider cabbage with vinegar a good hangover remedy.

Do it at home: “Chewing raw cabbage helps treat headaches and disturbance in the nerves caused due to a hangover. Cabbage juice taken with tomato juice works wonders as it reduces the craving for alcohol and also helps in metabolism,” suggests Dr. Mani.

Do’s and Don’ts of Drinking

Make sure you never take alcohol on an empty stomach. Always eat something before or while you are enjoying your drinks as this will not only slow down the rate at which alcohol enters your blood, but will also reduce the after-effects.

Try to alternate between an alcoholic drink and a non-alcoholic beverage. This will lead to an overall reduction in the quantity of alcohol you consume.

Prefer clear alcohol, such as white wine, vodka, gin etc. It is believed that the darker the alcoholic drink, the more likely it is to cause hangovers, thanks to the presence of more congeners (a substance in alcohol that is supposed to cause headaches).

Avoid sweet and sugary foods after or while you drink. Sweet taste makes it tough for the drinker to judge how much alcohol he/she is actually consuming. It also believed that sugar makes the drink hit you harder.

Try not to have a carbonated drink with alcohol as carbonation speeds up the alcohol absorption.

Drinking water is the best cure for a hangover. So try to drink as much water as you can while you are drinking.

Food is probably the last thing you want to look at while recovering, but your body needs energy. Energise your body with clear liquids tilll you can tolerate solid food. Start eating slowly with easy-to-digest foods such as plain toast, rice or clear soup.

The morning after the alcoholic binge, have omelette with bread. Eggs provide energy to the body, build up the protein content and remove the accumulated toxins in the body.

Juice, especially freshly squeezed orange juice, helps raising your blood sugar levels together with easing some of the hangover symptoms. However, if your stomach is upset, skip acidic juices such as orange juice and stick to apple juice instead.

Pepto-Bismol or an antacid is taken to relieve queasiness and settle your stomach. You can even take a mult-ivitamin or vitamin B capsules that help restoring the energy lost during your night of carousing.

Hangover cures: Six of the best natural remedies to try this New Year’s

The festive season is in full swing, but with celebrations (even those at home) comes hangovers.

If you’ve overdone it on New Year’s Eve and need to perk yourself up when you wake up on 1 January, medication can be tempting.

But if you’d prefer to avoid pharmaceuticals, there are natural solutions to try.

While there’s no such thing as a complete “cure” for a hangover, there are measures you can take to ease the pain while you wait out the unpleasant symptoms of a heavy night.

We’ve talked to nutritional experts to get the lowdown on some of natural hangover cures you could try instead.

1. Ginger

Ginger has long been used in Chinese medicine as an anti-nausea measure. This traditional thinking is well-founded: A 2016 study concluded that the plant is “an effective and inexpensive treatment for nausea”.

A cup of ginger tea the morning after a heavy night could be a cheap way of hitting two birds with one stone. You’ll be replenishing some of that much-needed water, and also getting an important shot of stomach-calming ginger.

Since ginger also has anti-inflammatory and heart benefits, you might just find yourself making it part of your daily routine.

When it comes to getting ginger to taste good, registered nutritionist Rob Hobson recommends that you add one to two teaspoons of ginger powder, half a lemon and two teaspoons of honey to a teapot and fill with boiling water. Leave it to brew for five minutes before serving.

“The zingy flavour is very energising, and the honey will help to re-balance low blood sugar levels,” he says.

2. A balanced breakfast

Tea is well and good, but many of us can empathise with a lack of appetite for actual food the morning after drinking. Eating is also vital, though, with alcohol consumption hitting your blood glucose levels hard.

Cliché would dictate that you tuck into the greasiest full English available, but our experts warn against this – “ditch the morning-after fried breakfast”, says Hobson.

Granola with sliced fruit can give you a hit of natural sugars and also get you some valuable vitamins as a bonus.

Rhiannon Lambert, a Harley Street nutritionist and author of the book Re:Nourish, says: “Foods containing potassium can help your body to recover lost electrolytes from a night of drinking. Bananas and avocados are good sources.”

3. Prickly pear

The prickly pear is a photogenic cactus with a vivid red fruit. Studies have shown that extract from this fruit can be used on hangovers to impressive effect.

It’s been found to reduce nausea, dizziness, and headaches, all of which sound pretty brilliant from the point of view of Britain’s hangover victims.

If you want to try it out, look for a supplement called Hovenia Dulcis extract.

4. Artichoke extract

Another extract to try is Artichoke. “This supplement stimulates bile production and can help to relieve bloating and other symptoms of indigestion associated with alcohol consumption,” says Hobson.

5. Water

It may be the simplest cure, but it’s one of the most effective.

Even relatively light drinking leads to dehydration. This, in turn, can cause the headaches, fatigue and lack of energy that so many of us associate with hangovers.

When you wake up feeling rough, drinking a glass of water should be on the top of your to-do list.

Lambert says that despite not being a big drinker, she is sure to drink more water on the days after she’s had a glass of wine or two.

Getting rehydrated will be even easier if you remember to drink a glass of water before going to bed at the end of your night – but don’t panic if you haven’t managed this. Making sure to take regular sips throughout your morning should still help you to feel better.

6. Sleep

There really is no substitute for sleep, and alcohol can seriously damage the quality and quantity of our shut eye.

Whether the night has gone on until the small hours, or drinking has impaired your ability to sleep, the downsides to even light sleep deprivation are significant.

If you’re feeling under the weather the following morning, make sure to schedule in an afternoon nap – and don’t forget an early night at the end of the day.

9 hero herbs to help naturally cure your hangover

Indulgence can take on many forms, but for many of us often the most popular is often alcohol. Here, we look at what a hangover is and explore some of the best natural hangover cures.

What causes a hangover?

Alcohol is broken down by the liver. When alcohol is broken down it produces a substance known as acetaldehyde, which is a toxic substance formed from ethanol metabolism. This is found in cheaper wines and spirits.

The first step to avoiding a hangover is to avoid those alcohols that contain higher levels of acetaldehyde which includes whiskey, cheap red wines, fruit brandy and dark spirits. If you are going to indulge, you are better to stick to clear spirits and good quality red wine with no sulphites added.

If you choose organic, then you are guaranteed less sulphites and a better quality, more natural product which is easier for the liver to breakdown.

Not that we need reminding, but the key signs of a hangover often include, dehydration, blood sugar variability (cravings), fatigue, nausea and a lowered immunity.

How can we avoid the symptoms of a hangover?

First, we need to understand in more detail, what happens to alcohol when it reaches the liver. There are two main phases of liver detoxification, conveniently labelled phase one and phase two.

In phase one, alcohol is converted into a less toxic state by an enzyme known as cytochrome P450. It achieves this through a series of complex enzymatic pathway conversions. This process forms free radicals that in a healthy person can be targeted by antioxidants. However, if we have over-indulged slightly and our system is a little more toxic than intended, this task is more challenging for the liver.

Phase two is where liver cells add metabolites to the products produced during phase 1 to render them into water soluble compounds that can then be safely excreted from the body.

For example, this is where acetaldehyde is converted. Essentially, the alcohol is broken down in a less toxic state so that it can be safely excreted and not continuously circulated in the bloodstream.

What can we do to naturally support the liver and also build up its tolerance?

The best way is enhance the natural detoxification processes occurring during phases 1 and 2 whilst also providing a good dose of antioxidants. There are also some great herbs that tonify and strengthen processes within the liver. There are even some that specifically support the phase 1 and phase 2.

Try to keep these herbal heroes to keep in your hangover cure kit:

Ginger

Ginger is warming and protective. It stimulates blood flow and is renowned for reducing nausea and settling an upset stomach. Its warmth and spice also stimulate the metabolism which in turn enhances detoxification. So if it’s ginger you are looking for our Pukka Three Ginger tea is the perfect solution.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a renowned super spice, famed for its anti-inflammatory and pain relief benefits. However, we now know that turmeric has a direct effect on liver cells encouraging their regeneration and repair.

Chlorella

Chlorella (a freshwater plant) is an excellent choice for combating that dreaded hangover and for preparing the body for the indulgence ahead. It naturally contains a very high level of chlorophyll and a unique component known as Chlorella Growth Factor.

Chlorella Growth Factor has the ability to repair tissues within the body, including liver cells in addition to stimulating the production of immune specific cells. Chlorella is especially effective in the removal of pollutants from the body, supporting their detoxification from the body, which includes alcohol.

Mint

Mint is a renowned herb for the digestion. However, its strong menthol essential oils also help to relieve nausea and improve clarity and concentration, boosting energy.

Rosemary

Rosemary is a natural stimulant and is great for relieving feelings of tiredness. For a hangover related stomach upset, rosemary could be used in the bath or inhaled in oil form or it can easily be used in food.

Fennel

Fennel is great for easing nausea and indigestion and can help to reduce the other effects of alcohol on the body. A lukewarm cup of fennel tea or cleanse tea will help to relieve digestive ailments, making it a handy hangover drink.

Chamomile

Chamomile is great for calming and relaxing the mind and body in general, which is particularly good if you suffer with ‘the fear’ the morning after. As a hangover cure, chamomile can also get to work on indigestion or a headache.

Parsley

Parsley helps to clear harmful acid from the body due to its high mineral and chlorophyll content.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C provides the immune system with that extra boost and also helps to prevent the onset of the cold and flu season. Go natural though! Natural vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits or in food supplements (such as Pukka Herbs’ Natural Vitamin C).  Watch out for ascorbic acid and synthetic Vitamin C.

The power of greens

For the ultimate natural tonic, try Pukka Herbs’ Clean Greens. Clean Greens contains 11 nutrient-dense plant foods (such as wheat grass juice, ginger, fennel, nettle, parsley, chlorella, kale sprout etc) that have high antioxidant capacities.

Our Clean Greens blend is able to alkalise, oxygenate, mineralise, detoxify and reduce inflammation throughout the body. It directly enhances the activity of two key enzymes that are present within phase one and two of liver detoxification.

It is the ideal solution for building up your tolerance too. It is gentle enough for everyday use whilst also helping to keep us on top of our daily cleansing and detoxification needs.

The 6 Best Natural Hangover Cures

A little over a year ago, I started seeing an acupuncturist. My friend Whitney urged me into her office to learn more about Chinese medicine and the accompanying Eastern outlook on diet and nutrition. Heidi took one look at my paperwork and, in the nicest and most medically professional way possible, told me what I kind of already knew: that my health was a mess.

I’ve been wanting to write more about what Heidi’s taught me over the last 14 or so months, especially for those of you with gluten and other auto-immune issues like myself. But I’m going to start with something more universal – something that might just help you though the finish line of the holiday season.

There are so many of my bad health habits that Heidi’s helped me replace with better more natural practices. Unfortunately, drinking is not one of them.

One of the main things I’ve struggled with in my health journey is how to keep an eye towards wellness and still have fun. I try and give my liver a break now and then, but now when I have a big night out, I take extra care in getting my body back on track the next day with natural antidotes rather than a bottle of Advil (though having one or two as an anti-inflammatory will help round out the below).

Here are some of my go-to natural hangover cures when I’m feeling like one or more of these owls. For more articulate explanations of why these work, I’d suggest reading Heidi’s original hangover heaven blog post which is full of wisdom and one-liners, like “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

1. Coconut Water. Alcohol’s most worrisome side effect (besides its gravitational pull towards karaoke bars, late night falafel, and men who will make terrible fathers) is dehydration. Because of this, replenishing your electrolytes is an important part of nursing your hangover. Water will help, but alone will not do the trick. Coconut water is full of important electrolytes and will help replenish what you’ve lost. Gatorade works too, which is why you see so many college students carrying it to class. But besides all sorts of dyes, it’s full of high fructose corn syrup, which throws the digestive tract out of whack. Good coconut water can be expensive, but I’d rather splurge on the raw, more natural brands like Harmless Harvest than flush my money down the toilet on something like Vita Coco. In general, you should be wary of a product that claims to be pure and natural yet does not need to be kept in a refrigerator. More on that below.

2. Lacto-Fermented Vegetables (i.e. Pickled Things). Probiotics are a very important medicine for your gut. Since my digestion is already so sensitive, I feel most of the effects of my hangover in my stomach…which often leads to a very unproductive day lying in the fetal position on the couch watching Sex and the city marathons. Since alcohol destroys your stomach flora, it’s important to replenish with probiotics the next day. You can buy over the counter pills (the best ones are kept in the refrigerated section of your health food store), but lacto-fermented vegetables carry trillions of good bacteria. You’ll find a bajillion more in one pickle spear than in the whole jar of pills. Now, what you find next to your sandwich at the deli is probably not going to help. The vegetables need to be lacto-fermented the old fashioned way so that you can benefit from the live cultures. Look for anything in the refrigerated section. Anything found on the regular shelves will be too highly processed to contain any of the good bacteria that your gut needs.

3. B Vitamins. B vitamins play a key role in brain and nervous system functions. They also help in breaking down alcohol in the body. Heidi is a huge fan of Blue Bonnet’s Stress B Complex because it has the correct blend of B vitamins and just enough Vitamin C to help your body absorb them.

4. Charcoal. Growing up, my mom always gave me a couple charcoal pills when I had a flu or stomach bug because it binds to toxins in your system. Now that I’m an adult, the more prevalent evil is alcohol rather than little kid germs. Heidi recommends taking one charcoal pill before you go out and one when you get home. The problem with taking one prior is that you actually won’t get as drunk. This can of course be an excellent strategy if you have a sales job that requires you to drink a fifth of vodka every night and still make it into the office at 8am. But for the rest of us, it might defeat the purpose of flooding our insides with toxins in the first place. I try to take a charcoal before bed (if I’m in any sort of state to remember) and one in the morning to mitigate the effects of an owl hangover like “the physical.” One important thing to note: don’t take charcoal within 2 hours of any medication. It will bind to those too and render them useless. And the last thing you need to add to your hangover is for your birth control and/or anti-psychotics not to kick in.

5. Good salt. Along with electrolytes, sodium also gets flushed from the body when you drink. That’s perhaps why our bodies crave bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches the next morning. But it’s probably easier for your digestion to just add salt to your coconut water or whatever else your eating. Not all salt is created equal and most table salt is so highly processed it carries very little efficacy. I have a sodium deficiency and by simply replacing my regular salt with pink Himalayan, I’ve been able to keep myself more balanced. It tastes great and contains a host of vitamins and minerals.

6. Kombucha. Since you can’t exactly start eating a jar of pickles on the street on your way to work, kombucha is perhaps the more culturally appropriate way to get probiotics back in your body after your bender. The drinks have become so popular over the last couple years, even my local bodega carries a few different varieties. I like the ginger flavor as that also calms the stomach, in case the bacon egg and cheese is still calling to you.

7. Milk Thistle. I never heard of this one before Heidi, but apparently the active chemical in Milk Thistle (silymarin) helps the liver repair itself. And if this doesn’t necessarily make your headache go away, it will at least fortify you for the next time your friend/client/cousin forces you to take multiple tequila shots against your will.

8 NATURAL HANGOVER CURES + VITAMIN WATER RECIPE: Denver Sports Recovery: Sports Recovery

The sun is out, the weather is heating up (for us lucky folks in Denver!)….which means backyard BBQs, Sunday beer sessions, happy hours, parties and weddings are kicking into gear. Spring/summer is a time to be social, but sometimes being social translates into being over-served.

As fun as drinking can be, the body really takes a hit. After a big day/night out, you gotta give your body some love. No one likes to feel badly after having a good time so here are my top tips for enjoying a drink (or 10..) and not suffering (too much) the next day!

Eat before you drink

Drinking on an empty stomach sets you up for a wicked hangover the next morning. If you’re drinking at night, make sure to eat dinner before you start drinking or along with your first few.

Go Clear

Go for the clear and clean alcohols — vodka, gin, white wine — as darker booze contains more chemicals called congeners which inflame the body and intensify hangovers. Mix your liquor with plain or sparkling water + fresh lime. Sugary mixers (especially diet sodas!) make hangovers way worse.

Hydrate

This one is obvious, but I have to make sure you heard it loud and clear. Alcohol is a diuretic which means it makes you pee. Diuretics can lead to dehydration if you’re not hydrating with water while you drink. When you get home from a boozy night, slam a big glass of water before bed. The next morning, drink a large mug of warm water with lemon. Sip on water and coconut water throughout the day! Coconut water is loaded with potassium so it’s way better than Gatorade for replenishing electrolytes. Make a jug of my natural vitamin water (recipe below)!

Take your B Vitamins

Alcohol depletes vitamins in the body. If you’re not too sloppy when you get home, pop a B-complex vitamin before you go to bed….and then another one after breakfast the next morning.

Take Shots!…. of Apple Cider Vinegar

This wonderful elixir will balance your blood pH levels and increase deficient minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron. Try 1 tablespoon of ACV in water with 1/2 tsp turmeric. Shot it back.

Eat a Good Breakfast

Unfortunately, being hungover does not give you a hall pass to head to McDonald’s or a greasy diner. Greasy, heavy food will really make you feel worse. I promise. Instead, opt for eggs and asparagus! Eggs contain a substance called cysteine which breaks down acetaldehyde (a hangover-causing toxin in alcohol). Asparagus assists with breaking down alcohol in your system so your hangover will be over quicker. Pair your eggs and asparagus with some gluten free toast + avocado for a well-rounded brekkie.

Sweat It Out

Exercise gets the blood flowing and stimulates the lymphatic system to excrete toxins. Do whatever exercise you love to do – walking, running, tennis, yoga, etc. If you don’t opt for a yoga class, add some twisting poses to your workout to help with wringing out the digestive system.

Love your Liver

Your liver is in overdrive after a boozy night. If you have a juicer, or a juice bar nearby, treat yourself to a big ole veggie juice which is a champ when it comes to liver detox. Add as many greens into your juice as you can stand and guzzle. Also, try to incorporate some brassica veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, Brussel sprouts) into your meals that day to support detoxification. Sip on roasted dandelion root tea.

Make a big batch of this refreshing and detoxifying natural vitamin water and drink over the course of the day. It’s pretty, and yummy, and sure to get you feeling good as gold in no time!

Natural Vitamin Water

Serves 4

  • Four cups of cold coconut or mineral water
  • 1 lemon
  • a handful of mint leaves
  • slice of fresh ginger root
  • 1 small cucumber
  • handful of frozen raspberries
  • handful of frozen blueberries
  • optional: 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar

Peel the cucumber into strips using a potato peeler. Slice the lemon into circles, the ginger into thin rounds and pull the mint leaves off their stalks.

Pour the water or coconut water into a jug and add the lemon, cucumber, mint leaves and berries. Add a dash of apple cider vinegar if you’re brave. Then let the water sit for about thirty minutes to allow the flavors to infuse into it.

Enjoy for a happy hangover!

90,000 Top 10 hangover cures

The best hangover cure is not to drink at all. Photo: PhotoXPress.ru

It is clear that the best hangover cure is not to drink at all. Or use, but in moderation. But this rule is forgotten on New Year’s Eve. So, the morning of January 1st. It’s not even you that is reflected in the mirror, but the body in which the terrible is happening: dehydration, lack of sugar, potassium and magnesium, pressure surges … In general, we begin treatment with the help of a narcologist-psychotherapist Alexei Magalif and nutritionist Lyudmila Denisenko.

1. It is not too late to drink Borjomi

The more water, the better – it flushes toxins and other alcohol decomposition products from the body. And mineral water restores the water-salt balance. It is better to release bubbles only from mineral water and drink half a glass three times a day. Borjomi, Essentuki-4, narzan – that is, table-medicinal, sodium bicarbonate, are best suited.

2. Diluted juices

Narcologists say that liquid vitamins are a real salvation for an exhausted body. But if you feel that the stomach is irritated, juices, especially orange, apple and multifruit juices, are best diluted in half with water. The best option is vegetable juices, which fill the body with not only vitamins, but also minerals.

3. Cabbage brine

Brine from sauerkraut and pickled (not pickled!) Cucumbers – the original Russian remedy for a hangover. And all because they contain the optimal composition of minerals and salt, which will restore the lack of substances spent on fun.

4. Green tea with honey

Honey is recognized by many scientists as one of the best hangover remedies, because it contains an almost ideal composition of fructose, potassium and magnesium. And green tea is loaded with antioxidants to help the body flush out toxins. Honey, by the way, can be eaten with a bite. Do not be alarmed if after this you are thrown into sweat – this is how the breakdown products of alcohol are excreted through the skin.

A cup of rosemary tea will normalize the vegetative system and help to cope with nausea thanks to the beneficial essential oils. An herbal tea made from chamomile and mint can help calm the stomach.

5. Tan, ayran, kefir

Fermented milk products are an excellent remedy for the stomach and intestines overloaded with yesterday’s excesses. Yoghurts, by the way, are preferred with a hangover in Turkey, considering them the best remedy for bad feelings.

6. Banana cocktail

Mix two bananas, a glass of milk and two tablespoons of honey in a blender, drink slowly. Proven British recipe. Milk is an excellent sorbent, honey is pure glucose, and banana is fast carbohydrates.

7. French “Cheer”

French cocktail: a little lemon juice and two equal parts of white wine and sparkling water. Mix, drink in one gulp. Thanks to soda, vitamin C is absorbed faster, and diluted wine helps to mildly relieve hangover symptoms.

8. Khash, jellied meat

Any broth, including light chicken broth, is a very good remedy for calming the stomach and relieving headaches. And the famous Armenian khash is considered an excellent remedy for morning sickness.By the way, our native jellied meat, heated in the microwave, is not much inferior to khash.

9. Cold hodgepodge

A simple dish consisting of yesterday’s slices: finely chop fresh and pickled cucumbers, add finely chopped boiled veal or beef. For taste, you can chop olives or olives. You can eat it this way, but it is still better to fill it with diluted pickle brine (not pickled so that the vinegar does not hurt an irritated stomach). Before you – a kind of hodgepodge. Not only is it tasty, but also quick help to the body – replenishing the lack of fluid (the cause of headache) and minerals – potassium, magnesium, sodium.

10. Grapes

French scientists strongly recommend seizing a hangover with a bunch of grapes – antioxidants from it effectively remove toxins. Plus vitamins.

BTW

Why are women worse in the morning?

Narcologists say that female alcoholism is almost incurable – but it is still less common than male alcoholism. And all because the ladies’ hangover is stronger. And the memory of him, apparently, is better. In fact, the body of women is very different from that of men: there is less water in it, which dilutes alcohol, but more fatty tissue, which more readily absorbs the products of alcoholic decay (from which we get sick). Therefore, the next morning women experience much stronger “impressions”.

Especially if dark drinks are abused. After all, the darker the drink, the worse the hangover from it. And it’s not about the dyes. In dark alcohol, there are more tannins, from which the next morning is so bad. That is why narcologists and nutritionists recommend, first of all, non-carbonated transparent drinks such as white wine and vodka – so that the next morning it would not be excruciatingly painful.

NOTE

What else will help relieve unpleasant symptoms

Tablets

If nothing helps at all, even the most tested folk recipes, we turn to pharmacology. The simplest remedy is acetylsalicylic acid (in common parlance – aspirin). It thins the blood, which is necessary for a hangover, gently relieves spasms. If you have stomach problems in the morning, take soluble aspirin, it has a milder effect on the mucous membranes.

In addition, narcologists recommend succinic acid in tablets – it quickly relieves hangover symptoms, improves cellular respiration, and invigorates. If you feel as if you are swinging at sea – your arms and legs are trembling, you move from side to side – then any remedies for motion sickness will help. But do not rush with antispasmodics. After all, they can only relieve a spasm, but do not remove toxins, do not thin the blood. That is, they bring only temporary relief.

Fresh Spinach Salad

This leafy vegetable is rich in antioxidants that help eliminate alcohol breakdown products from the body more quickly. You can chew it raw, or you can boil it and add it to any salad.

Parsley

Several sprigs of parsley will not only help to fight off the smell of fumes, but also fill the body with the necessary minerals – potassium and magnesium, vitamin C, will help remove toxins.

Contrast shower

When all methods have been tried and you feel that you are sweating after hot tea, it’s time to go to the shower. Contrasting.

Toxins are released through the pores of the skin, and they need to be rinsed off as soon as possible in order to open a second wind. In addition, cool water tones blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. But the contrast should not be excessive. Ice water can cause too sharp vasoconstriction and spasm. Heart rhythm may be disturbed.

And in general, a sharp contrast for a hangover organism is unnecessary stress. Therefore, it is not recommended to go to the bathhouse in a severe hangover: it is better to postpone any serious temperature overloads for at least one day. The same goes for jumping into an ice hole or the cold sea if you are hungover on a tropical beach.

Aromatherapy

People in India strongly recommend trying to get rid of a hangover with incense. They do this with an aroma incense burner, where they add a little water and pour in two or three drops of essential oil – yarrow, fennel, tea tree, juniper, vanilla, anise, lemon, mint.A standard aroma lamp is suitable for us. If it is not at hand, just drop a couple of drops on a handkerchief and inhale periodically. Marjoram oil will help relieve headaches and also balance the central nervous system. Apply one drop to each ear.

Tried and tested folk recipes for a hangover

Happy New Year, dear beloved readers! We hope that in the evening, at night, and in the morning it was fun! And who is not very happy now – for you our “ambulance” in the fight against hangovers and headaches. And, of course, with the comments of experts. Why does pickle help? The main thing on a hard morning is to drink more. You can use plain water, lightly salted and flavored with squeezed lemon. And even better – mineral, alkaline. It will help restore the water-salt and acid-base balance in the body, which was severely disturbed by yesterday’s holiday. – Juices will help, especially apple juice, – prompts MD, head of the toxicology laboratory of the National Scientific Center for Narcology of the Russian Federation Vladimir Nuzhny .- It contains a lot of healthy fructose, which will help bring a fatigued liver into working order, as well as vitamin C, which your cells especially need. In terms of the balance of the water-salt composition, standard cucumber pickle is especially good. No wonder Peter 1 prescribed it to his courtiers after drunkenness. And the good thing is that during fermentation, a lot of lactic acid is formed, which, interacting with sodium, potassium and other similar elements, helps them to take root in the body in the best way and fill the resulting deficiency. Which is better – tan, ayran or kefir? Sorbents – enterosgel, activated carbon – will help to get rid of nausea. Or folk-store, dairy milk, kefir, tan, ayran. True, dairy products can worsen things (causing uncontrolled diarrhea), but they will speed up the process of getting rid of a hangover. “Both milk and other sorbents by and large belong to folk remedies,” says Vladimir Pavlovich. – But from this they help no worse. The whole problem is that alcohol inhibits the intestinal microflora, causing dysbiosis. But in addition to this, the body produces the toxic enzyme acetaldehyde during the peak of alcohol intoxication. It is he who is responsible for our poor health in the morning, although he himself is almost no longer present in the body. Sorbents, including milk sorbents, will help get rid of acetaldehyde residues and other toxic substances in excess formed in the lower intestine. Sex and coffee. And what about cigarettes? – The best recipe for me with a hangover: take a hot bath in which to drink a cup of strong coffee. Then wake up your wife and have sex with her. Perfectly relieves all symptoms! – our reader Alexander shares. – Oh-oh-oh, – shook her head cardiologist, Ph.D. Svetlana Davydova . – Retzpet may be good, but it is very individual. It is suitable only for people with perfectly healthy hearts and blood vessels. And since we have few who have examined the cardiovascular system in detail, I would not advise using this method in practice. Indeed, in fact, all three stages are quite a tangible blow to the heart. And it is very vulnerable from a hangover. It is completely contraindicated for hypertensive patients. My husband loves a contrast shower – And my husband has a proven recipe – a contrast shower. He says he immediately feels like a person, – says Tatiana. – The recipe is good, I would highly recommend it myself, – comments our expert, to M.Sc., kinesitherapist Sergei Bubnovsky . – Only I would not advise you to immediately dive under the cold streams of water. Waking up in a sick state, you need to prepare your body – at least 5-10 minutes to walk barefoot on the floor, and then climb into the bath. And be sure to start with warm jets. – This recipe is really good, – Svetlana Davydova supports. – Only, again, for people not older than 45 years old and with a good cardiovascular system. If you feel a rapid heartbeat in the morning after a fun evening, it is better to calm your heart before this procedure. I would not advise using a contrast shower for people with heart rhythm disorders – tachycardia, atrial fibrillation. This can provoke a complication of the disease. BTW Proven folk recipes – Strong black or green tea, squeeze half a lemon and season with two tablespoons of honey. Drink slowly and tastefully. – Cold dried fruit compote – a source of carbohydrates and vitamins. – Armenian khash (like hot jellied meat) or Russian cabbage soup with meat. And also cold cabbage or cucumber pickle with finely chopped boiled lamb. Such a soup in Peter’s times was called “hangover” and was an optimal combination of carbohydrates for such a case – sources of energy, proteins, salts and vitamins. TO THE TOPIC After hops, everyone is bad Foreigners designate this post-holiday state with correct and well-aimed phrases, which translate into Russian something like this: French – wooden snout; Germans – cat howling, crying; Portuguese – rollback, reverse surf stream; Norwegians are carpenters in the head; Italians are upset, with a disturbed musical order (sounds beautiful and true – stonato) Americans are in limbo. If we talk about dubbing, then the Serbian word “mamurlyuk” will undoubtedly win.

Like a cucumber: folk remedies for hangovers from around the world

Recently, Chinese scientists from Sun Yatsen University in Guangzhou found that soda with lemon is the best for hangovers. “VM” tells how they deal with the consequences of alcohol consumption in different countries.

Russia

Traditional Russian recipe for a hangover – cucumber pickle. It helps to restore water-salt balance and remove alcohol by-products from the body.Sauerkraut also helps with a hangover.

Georgia

Georgians drink a glass of the national tkemali sauce in the morning to come to their senses after the New Year’s feast. Another common Caucasian recipe for fighting hangovers popular in Georgia is fatty meat broth khash. It has been known since at least the 12th century: in the Armenian medical book “Consolation with Fevers”, which dates back to 1184, they offer to treat chills with this dish.

South Korea

To combat hangover, hejunguk soup is brewed in this country. Its name is translated as “hangover soup”. But the East, as you know, is a delicate matter, so the recipe for the dish is not quite ordinary: in addition to napa cabbage and soybean paste, clotted buffalo blood is added to the traditional basis of the dish.

Japan

In the Land of the Rising Sun, people are saved from hangovers with the help of umeboshi – plum or apricot pickled in a special way. The fructose and salt they contain help to bring a person back to normal life. And umeboshi is also quite sour: the Japanese say that if your face scowls from their taste, then you are already on the way to recovery!

New Zealand

In order to improve health and gain strength after a hectic feast, New Zealanders use a rather unusual combination of dishes: they drink a pie made of meat and cheese with chocolate milk, to which a pinch of salt is added.

Norway

Harsh Scandinavians are treated for a hangover in two ways. If the suffering after excessive drinking is strong, the Norwegians gather their will into a fist and together with other “sick” go to the nearest kebab, and especially patriotic ones are treated with a national dish – fermented trout with onions and sour cream wrapped in potato lavash. Those who have left the strength in the morning just drink a couple of glasses of heavy cream or milk.

Mongolia

Descendants of nomads use tomato juice and salt as a cure for a hangover.True, in the national Mongolian version, this dish looks very unusual for a European: pickled sheep’s eye is also added to the juice. It is customary to drink it in one gulp – apparently, even for the Mongols themselves, this is a dubious pleasure.

Folk remedies for a hangover

Is there a life during a hangover and how to return to it with the help of folk methods?

Yesterday it was fun and a lot of alcohol, but today you have a headache? Congratulations, you have a hangover after heavy drinking and inappropriate drinking.Symptoms of the phenomenon can be different: headache, dizziness, terrible thirst, weakness. Regardless of the manifestations of the hangover syndrome, its removal can be done not only with a morning cocktail, but also with proven folk remedies.

Avoiding a Hangover: Getting Ready in advance

To prevent headaches, as well as other unpleasant hangovers, you need to prepare in advance using a number of proven remedies:

  • Before the feast, drink the dose of activated black carbon necessary for your weight (1 tablet per 10 kg).The drug absorbs alcohol, accelerates the liver cleansing process.
  • You can eat 1 tbsp. l. butter mixed with egg. The cocktail will soften the effect and the rate of absorption of alcohols, enveloping the gastric mucosa.
  • Do not forget about high-carbohydrate foods – meat, fish, cereals.
  • Never lower the degree. What does it mean? You can not drink cognac with beer, sparkling wine, otherwise the condition will be painful.

These methods will help mitigate residual effects and protect the body from the harmful effects of alcohol. But if you forget to take some simple steps, then you need to choose a home remedy for a hangover.

Rest, Sleep & Natural Cleansing

When the incendiary party is over, it is optimal to disconnect from active life for 12 hours, giving the body a rest. At this time, drink plenty of water, fruit drinks, classic cucumber pickle, while waiting until the liver naturally removes the remains of alcohol and toxins.

A hearty breakfast is a guarantee of excellent well-being

Often, abundant libations irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing vomiting, nausea, constipation, and stomach pain. Here a weak broth and fatty milk will come to the rescue. This food envelops the intestinal mucous membranes.

Do you feel nauseous while eating and drinking? Be sure to take activated charcoal as described above.

Relaxing bathroom to come back to life

A warm bathroom (not cold!) Quickly revives. To increase efficiency, essential oils of grapefruit and conifers are added to the water.

Drinking mode

When there is no time to lie down and sleep, then immediately you need to go to the shower, having devoted 10 minutes to water procedures. After leaving the shower, drink the liquid every hour:

  • Fermented milk drinks improve bowel function and have a mild diuretic effect, which helps to eliminate toxins from the body.
  • Sweet juices with a high content of vegetable fructose, which nourishes the body and quickly stabilizes the condition.Natural honey has a similar effect, so you can eat 1-2 tablespoons of the treats or add them to your tea.
  • Brine and pickles contain a lot of magnesium and potassium. It is enough to drink 100-150 ml to return to reality.
  • In small quantities, it is recommended to drink strong tea or coffee, adding lemon, grapefruit to them. This life-giving drink improves blood circulation and tones the body. Citrus fruits are high in vitamin C and potassium, and these substances are excreted in large quantities in the urine.

Express measures to restore excellent well-being

If the above methods did not help, then try a quick-acting folk remedy for a hangover:

  1. Dissolve 1-2 tsp in a glass of mineral water. sugar and 15-20 ml of lemon juice. “Cocktail” will help restore the water-salt balance, reserves of vitamin C and potassium, as well as increase blood sugar levels.
  2. At work or at home, take the time to make tea with ginger and honey. It will quench your thirst, raise blood glucose levels and relieve nausea.
  3. You can beat 1-2 egg yolks, add 10 ml of vinegar, black pepper and salt to them. You need to drink in one gulp, and then eat the mixture with a slice of black bread.
  4. Tomato juice with added salt will be an excellent remedy for nausea and headaches. In the absence of juice, a fresh tomato with salt will adequately replace it.
  5. Warm milk with the addition of 2 tbsp. l. castor oil.
  6. Cleansing enema with herbal decoction of chamomile, removing residual toxins.

The classic Schweppes with an obsessive viscous aftertaste helps well. The secret of Schweppes effect is in the high content of quinine, and it is rational to drink tonic after a party. In the morning, life will not seem so sad.

How to be “cured” by small doses of alcohol?

For treatment with alcohol, it is enough to drink 1 bottle of beer. You can replace the foamy drink with 50-100 ml of vodka mixed with any juice. After drinking a small amount, go to bed, and when you wake up, enjoy the improved condition. But be careful, this method can lead to a lingering binge.

Note that this is an extreme method, it sometimes aggravates the process of intoxication of the body. And if you are in a hurry to work, then you should refuse to get drunk, because it will intensify the smell of fumes and quickly return you to a state of light intoxication.

How to get rid of headaches?

Headache is one of the most striking manifestations of a hangover, and getting rid of it is very difficult. Here a person has a choice: to endure until the body is completely cleansed, or to take a pill. Medication is most effective, so prepare one of the following drugs in advance:

  1. Citramon is the most popular but unsafe drug. It contains the caffeine necessary for the body, but paracetamol is present in the composition. The latter is incompatible with alcohol and harms the liver, but when there are no other medicines in the house, then feel free to drink 1 tablet of Citramon. With a single dose, the drug will not harm.
  2. Instant Aspirin, relieving pain in 10-15 minutes. But these tablets are recommended to be drunk 6 hours after the final dose of beer and other strong drink.
  3. Asparkam is high in magnesium and potassium. This drug is prohibited for diseases of the cardiovascular system, in all other cases it is drunk in 1-2 tablets 20 minutes after a meal.

Anti-hangover assortment of the store “Russian Roots”

Schisandra juice

The flower plant lemongrass chinensis has a beneficial effect on our health, providing a unique stimulating and tonic effect. Experts attribute this gift of nature to adaptogens – substances that activate our body, ensuring its stability during stress, intense physical exertion, climate change and under conditions of hypoxia.

The effect of a lemongrass-based tonic drink is significantly different from the usual coffee, tea or other energy drinks. The latter show their effect after 2-5 minutes, they have a long-lasting effect (within an hour), and then abruptly cease to act, which leads to a rapid depletion of the body.In addition, they have a detrimental effect on the work of the heart, which can be compared with the work of a running engine in a 30-degree frost.

Lemongrass, on the other hand, has an increasing effect: the duration of the influence is 5-6 hours, and then a gradual decline occurs, which does not affect your well-being at all. In addition, the drink does not deplete nerve cells, but exactly the opposite contributes to the accumulation of biological energy in them.

Detoxic Antipochmelin

Detoxic Antipochmelin is a herbal preparation that actively fights hangover. It removes toxins formed during the breakdown of alcohol, heals the body and, most importantly, reduces the craving for alcohol. The composition of the preparation “Antipohmelin” is completely natural, so you can safely put aside the concern about harm to health.

The composition of the miraculous herbal collection includes chamomile, thyme, St. John’s wort, wormwood, yarrow, sage, beans and rose hips. All these components perfectly relieve intoxication and eliminate symptoms such as:

  • stomach pain and nausea;
  • sharp and dull headache;
  • liver pain;
  • tremor of the limbs;
  • general weakness;
  • nervous disorders;
  • etc.

Conclusion

So we examined the most popular folk methods and drugs for hangover. The listed methods must be selected for the individual characteristics of your body, and one of them is sure to provide such a long-awaited relief. When folk remedies do not help, then you can resort to the old and proven method – hangover.

Treatment of a hangover with folk remedies | All About Alcoholism | Alkogolizma

Holidays are a regular feature of people’s lives. In addition to consuming a large amount of food, these days any person can not calculate the amount of alcohol drunk and suffer a hangover in the morning. To quickly eliminate this problem, folk remedies are becoming indispensable.

It’s no secret that when you say a hangover, the first thing that comes to mind is a wonderful, even magical cucumber pickle. Scientists have proven that this miracle drink will help to cope best during a hangover. After all, it contains all the necessary acids that the body needs at this moment to maintain the water-salt balance.

But this is not the only folk remedy for hangover. Also, the most common activated carbon is excellent for eliminating or reducing symptoms. Due to its medicinal properties, it removes all alcohol from the body at an accelerated rate. This method is considered to be more convenient because coal does not take up much space and can be safely carried around in your pocket, unlike brine.

The simplest advice on how to get rid of a hangover is to drink plenty of water. For a higher quality and faster result, you need to consume a liter and a half more liquid than usual. It is better if it contains alkali in its composition. It can be regular mineral water or orange juice.

In order to get rid of nausea and heartburn, fermented milk products are perfect: kefir, fermented baked milk, liquid yogurt or regular milk.

Drinks with a high sugar content will also be excellent helpers in the fight against a hangover. After all, sugar neutralizes alcohol in human blood.

Soups and broths do a pretty good job of suppressing a hangover, too. The main rule is that soup or broth should be rich. It should be consumed hot.

Hot drinks – coffee or tea does an excellent job of eliminating hangover symptoms. Due to the high temperature of the drink, blood in the human body begins to move much faster. This helps to get rid of the alcohol residues in the body.

A very old and lesser known method is a crude egg with vinegar in a mug. This method is one of the best, and will certainly help to eliminate the hangover syndrome in a person who has gone too far the day before with the use of alcoholic beverages.

The most important advice in this article: do not consume excessive amounts of alcohol. And then none of these popular ways to deal with a hangover will be required.

The best folk remedies for a hangover

Nutritionist Marina Makisha, a member of the Association of Dietitians and Nutritionists, gave Russians advice on how to fight hangovers, which may come in handy after the noisy New Year holidays.

A hangover is an intoxication of the body, and for the removal of toxins, as well as for the restoration of the water-salt balance, abundant drinks are needed : mineral water, green tea, kefir and ayran. With a hangover syndrome, fatty foods should be avoided, as well as strong physical exertion (not only active ones – for example, you will also have to refuse to go to the bathhouse). It is recommended to take a walk in the fresh air to cool off.

Where does a hangover come from?

The main reason for its appearance: dehydration is a classic consequence of the excretion of alcohol by the kidneys. To the pangs of a hangover is also added hypoglycemia (a decrease in blood glucose) – a consequence of the influence of substances contained in alcoholic beverages, such as methanol and some polyphenols, etc.

What to do before bedtime?

Drink a LOT of water before going to bed. This will help prevent headaches. Since at this time the body is probably already dehydrated, he will be extremely happy.

What to do next morning?

Eat a banana awake and take vitamin C and, if possible, vitamins containing zinc (exclude orange juice, it can worsen stomach pain, but a glass of tomato juice will be very helpful).

Dissolve half a teaspoon of baking soda in warm water and drink to help reduce acidity.

Brew chamomile tea – it removes toxins well and does not have such a strong diuretic effect as coffee or tea.

Breakfast should be made with slow carbohydrates and soon you will forget about the consequences of yesterday.

Take care of yourself!
