The Skin Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

From avocado facials to honey scrubs, reaching into your kitchen cabinet in hopes of attaining clearer, smoother skin is nothing new. But does apple cider vinegar (ACV), another superfood ingredient, deserve a spot on your bathroom vanity?

If you’ve considered using this pantry staple to help treat acne or another skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, that isn’t surprising. The popularity of ACV has only grown in recent years, thanks to its reputation for healing common infections and wounds, or lowering blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, as some research shows. You should know that all those benefits haven’t been proved; long-term randomized controlled trials on the potential effects of ACV in humans are lacking, notes Harvard Medical School. (And, as UChicago Medicine points out, despite what you may have read online, ACV won’t cure cancer.)

When it comes to helping you achieve a healthier complexion, some of the components in ACV may help, but experts are cautious about the ingredient’s use orally or infused in beauty products. Below we explore the possible benefits and risks.

What’s in Apple Cider Vinegar That May Offer Health Benefits?

“Apple cider vinegar is the new ‘it’ girl,” says Patricia Farris, MD, a clinical associate professor at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and a founder of Sanova Dermatology in Metairie, Louisiana. The vinegar, Dr. Farris says, is “being touted for medical benefits including controlling blood sugar, weight loss, and lowering blood pressure.”

Farris adds that vinegar has polyphenolic antioxidants, which may offer health benefits. ACV is high in pectin, a polysaccharide that occurs naturally in apples and may play a role in improving the skin’s barrier, according to a study published in January 2014 in Biomolecules & Therapeutics.

While human research on the potential benefits of ACV is limited, some people have experienced health benefits from the vinegar. According to UChicago, probiotics, nutrients, and the chemical compound acetic acid are the potentially beneficial parts of this rosy-hued vinegar. In ACV, the probiotic is the “mother” formed from the yeast and bacteria during fermentation. Probiotics are “good” bacteria that are also in foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Still, not just any bottle of ACV will boost your gut health. Abigail Waldman, MD, a dermatologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, says that most ACV has the bacteria filtered out of it. And even when you can buy unfiltered or unpasteurized ACV that contains bacteria, there’s no guarantee that these bacteria contribute to healthy gut flora the way the aforementioned fermented foods might.

“ACV, like most fruits and vegetables, may serve as a prebiotic, providing the food for your gut flora to consume,” says Dr. Waldman, who is also an instructor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School.

How May Using Apple Cider Vinegar Help Improve Your Complexion?

A study published December 2017 in Natural Product Research suggests that ACV offers antifungal and antibacterial properties, but the research on how it may affect your complexion is lacking, says Melissa Piliang, MD, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic. “There is really no good scientific evidence proving the [skincare] benefits of ACV [topically or orally], and it can be harmful,” she says, adding that it can help skin conditions if used cautiously and with supervision from a board-certified dermatologist.

There are a few things in ACV that may boost the appearance and health of your skin.

Acetic acid Research has shown this acid is antifungal and antimicrobial. When used topically, it clears bacteria that may be related to either infections or skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis (scalp eczema), and eczema.

Citric acid This is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). AHAs are used to increase skin cell turnover, and have been shown to decrease wrinkles and age spots.

Acetic acid and citric acid are found in higher levels in ACV, but they are also found in other types of vinegar. White vinegar probably works as well for skin conditions as ACV does, Waldman says. “Doctors have been using vinegar soaks forever. The theory is that ACV has more citric acid, which might be where the hype is coming from, but a lot of the effects are overblown,” she says.

Can Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Improve Your Health?

Drinking ACV has become popular as a way to improve gut health, but Dr. Piliang says that this benefit isn’t a sure thing. “Data suggests it, but we’re a ways from saying it will magically change your microbiome in a positive way. There are so many factors in what is in your microbiome and your gut,” she says.

So if you want to try it, manage your expectations. Farris recommends diluting it in water (1 tablespoon per cup of water) and drinking it as part of your daily routine.

To help mask the taste of ACV, a cup of tea, juice, or other nonalcoholic beverage can substitute for water for a flavorful alternative. The important thing is to avoid drinking ACV by itself, because in its pure form it has been associated with burns to the mouth and esophagus, and it can eat away at tooth enamel, according to a Dutch study published in December 2012.

Piliang says she’s seen reports of people having inflamed mucosa in their mouth, stomach, and esophagus from drinking ACV. “A tablespoon in a glass of water once a day is probably not going to do anything bad or good, but some people take things to the extreme,” she says.

Neither Waldman nor Piliang has heard of patients drinking ACV and successfully treating a skin condition.

Diluting Apple Cider Vinegar Is Key to Using It Safely

While Farris notes the potential benefits of consuming diluted ACV orally, she does not recommend applying pure ACV to your skin, as the acids in it may cause chemical burns and irritation, according to a June 2015 article in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. “Putting it on the skin straight up is highly irritating, and I have seen many patients who have irritated and burned their skin by repeated use of apple cider vinegar. I advise patients against using this particular home remedy for this reason.”

For skin infections, Waldman advises making a dilution of 1 tablespoon of ACV per 1 cup of water. There’s a wide range of recommended concentrations, but it’s generally advisable to start there and see how much you can tolerate.

“The higher the concentration, the more likely it’s going to irritate your skin,” Waldman says. “But it probably also works better because of the higher levels of acetic and citric acid. It’s a balance. You never want to use ACV in its concentrated form.”

How Apple Cider Vinegar May Help Treat Skin Conditions

Experts have mixed opinions on the use of ACV as a treatment for skin conditions. Anecdotally, they’ve heard both of successes and bad reactions. Waldman doesn’t recommend that her patients use ACV but doesn’t dissuade those who are using it successfully. “If you have a mild condition, it might help, but for more severe cases, it’s probably not going to be the end all, be all of products,” she says.

Some basics to keep in mind: Your skin has an outer layer, the epidermis. “That layer is essentially like a brick wall. When you pull it apart, water gets out and irritants can come in,” Waldman says. “A lot of face washes, toners, and bar soap are just too harsh and strip that layer.”

The pH of skin is slightly acidic, and so is ACV, so if you have dry skin, you can generally use it without stripping the epidermis. You want to keep everything where it belongs — the lipid layer in place, to keep the irritants from penetrating into the skin, Piliang says.

Acne

Acne forms when keratin, the main protein in your skin, builds up in a pore and forms a plug (a blackhead or a whitehead). AHAs, like citric acid, dissolve the keratin so the pore can open up and drain, and it helps make pores appear smaller and improve the appearance of acne. Retinoids and benzoyl peroxide have the same effect.

“We know that breaking down keratin can help acne, and ACV does contain AHAs, so the potential is there, but there just aren’t good studies to show that,” Piliang says.

If you already use an anti-acne wash or acne treatments, those tend to be irritating to the skin, causing dryness and peeling, and you could be stripping the epidermis if you add ACV to your routine.

“It defeats the purpose when you let all the water out and everything outside — chemicals in the air, irritants, bacteria — in,” Waldman says. “Everyone is a little different, and oily skin probably has a higher tolerance for applying more acidic products. Sensitive, dry skin, has a much lower threshold. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all recommendation.”

For teens with oily skin and acne, using ACV is less risky because their skin is more resistant to irritation. The oil protects the outer layer of skin, and it comes back faster in a younger person than an older adult with drier skin, Piliang says.

Eczema or Psoriasis

If you have psoriasis or eczema, you should be very careful about using ACV, because if you put it on skin that’s broken down, fissured, or bleeding, it’s going to burn like crazy and be very uncomfortable, Piliang says.

When you have eczema, your skin doesn’t have a good barrier, so it’s vulnerable to bacteria, fungus, and other organisms and you’re at high risk for infection. Using diluted ACV may help get rid of the bacteria, and therefore prevent infection, Waldman says.

Waldman says she’s seen cases where ACV has improved psoriasis, but “mechanically it doesn’t quite make sense.” She has seen that ACV helps with seborrheic dermatitis, when you have a scaly scalp (like with psoriasis), and greasy, thick pink scales on the face. It’s thought to be due to the skin’s reaction to fungus and bacteria, which is why a diluted vinegar soak may help.

RELATED: 9 Treatments to Soothe Psoriasis

Rosacea

People with rosacea should be very cautious about using ACV, since their skin is already very sensitive and the outer layer is already damaged, Piliang says. Waldman doesn’t recommend using ACV because rosacea is multifactorial and could be a reaction to your normal skin organisms, the sun, spicy food, coffee, and even an irritating cream.

“Rosacea can be inflamed from a lot of irritating conditions, meaning ACV could make it better, but it could very easily make it worse if used inappropriately, meaning if it’s not diluted enough or if the person is just particularly sensitive to any sort of irritant on their skin,” she says.

Skin Infections

Waldman has seen patients successfully use vinegar soaks for chronic or acute local skin infections such as fungal infections like athlete’s foot and paronychia (infection around the fingernails). Vinegar soaks are particularly effective for treating toenail infections caused by a type of bacteria called pseudomonas, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. This type of toenail infection comes with greenish discoloration of thenails, also known as chloronychia.

“That’s where I see ACV being used in the most effective way,” she says. “I have had acne patients who swear by ACV applied as a toner after they wash their face. It’s not something I would generally prescribe, but certainly in that population, they say it works well.”

If you’re looking at skin-care products that contain ACV, Waldman warns that you don’t know the concentration of ACV you’re getting. Instead, look for products with acetic acid, citric acid or other AHAs, or make your own toner with 1 tablespoon of organic ACV in 1 cup of water. “Otherwise you’re probably just paying for labeling,” she says.

Though medical research doesn’t yet support using apple cider vinegar as an external treatment to treat skin conditions, it is currently being explored as a potential treatment for skin and cosmetic benefits in clinical settings. A study published in January 2016 in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine suggests that a topical application of apple cider vinegar may improve the impact of treatments of varicose veins in terms of both pain levels and cosmetic appearance.

How to Tell if Apple Cider Vinegar Isn’t Helping Your Skin Condition

While it’s generally deemed safe to ingest diluted ACV or apply it to your skin, when it comes to your skin, don’t overdo it, or else you’ll risk irritating your skin. If you’ve been struggling with a skin issue for a while and are using ACV in your skin-care routine, Waldman recommends going to see your primary care physician or a dermatologist.

It’s possible that ACV may be helping you, but it could be masking another condition. She’s had patients come in who think they have acne, but actually have rosacea, and patients who thought they had brown spots but had very early melanomas.

“I know everyone wants an alternative treatment, but sometimes you do need to seek medical care for things that aren’t going away,” she says. “An outside, expert opinion can at least reassure you that everything is normal or if you need to seek other input.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is basically a miracle elixir—from helping aid weight loss to managing diabetes, it really seems like there’s nothing ACV can’t do.

When used correctly, it also can do wonders for your skin.

“In general, apple cider vinegar may have antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral properties,” says Michael Kassardjian, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, board-certified dermatologist at Coast Dermatology in Torrance, California. “However, ACV must be used with caution on the skin, as it may cause major irritation when applied topically without being diluted, leading to burns or blisters,” says Dr. Kassardjian.

This content is imported from {embed-name}. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

After all, it is an acid. And while it’s widely available, most concentrations may be too potent to apply to your skin without diluting it. So you shouldn’t just slather it on straight from the bottle.

“It really depends on what area you are using it, for what you are using it, and how sensitive your skin is,” says Dr. Kassardjian. “I would say (to dilute it) at least one part ACV to four parts water, but if you have sensitive skin it is better to start closer to one part ACV to ten parts water.”

Here are four ways ACV can help different skin conditions:

It can help treat acne:

Apple cider vinegar can be used as a toner to treat a breakout.

“It can be used as a toner becasue of its anti-inflammatory properties. It consists of acetic acid and alpha hydroxy acid,” says Dr. Kassardjian. “Acetic acid has keratolytic effects, basically helping unplug blocked pores. And alpha hydroxy acid helps to exfoliate the skin and help in smoothing and improving skin texture, and also helps to absorb excess oils of the skin.”

In addition, ACV can help balance your skin’s pH levels. By reducing pH levels of the skin it can help dry up acne spots and remove dead skin cells.

It can fight foot odor:

koszivGetty Images

“The acids in ACV help to alter pH levels of your skin. In addition to its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, this alteration can help to fight off odors,” says Dr. Kassardjian.

If the odor is from athlete’s foot, ACV’s antifungal properties can help treat the fungus to help diminish odor. If your feet stink because of excess sweating, ACV’s antibacterial properties can help fight off odor causing bacteria.

It’s a nice home remedy for bug bites:

BebenjyGetty Images

“ACV is a great home remedy in the use of bug bites (such as mosquito bites) due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It can help alleviate the sensation to itch and soothe the skin,” says Dr. Kassardjian.

It can help treat the symptoms of paronychia:

marekuliaszGetty Images

What now? Paronychia is the medical term for super infected skin around your nails (mosts likely due to pulling a hangnail.) “Paronychia is an infection that occurs under the cuticle, and can be attributed to bacteria and/or a yeast infection,” says Dr. Kassardjian.”ACV (when diluted in water) can help as a soak for the nail, not only with its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, but can also help with the swelling and pain through its anti-inflammatory properties.”

Apple Cider Vinegar: 8 things you should not do while taking apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has a long history of being a ‘miracle cure’ to various health problems. It goes from curing sunburn and acne to helping in weight loss and preventing cancer. The vinegar has been loved by many doctors but sadly there are no scientific claims regarding its health benefits.

Apple cider vinegar is produced by the fermentation of apple cider. During this process, the apples are fermented by yeast and added to cider, then in alcohol and finally in vinegar. It helps control blood sugar and diabetes. It is a great remedy for itchy bug bites and stings. Though it has multiple health benefits, you can’t consume it crazily. There are a few things you should NOT do while drinking apple cider vinegar.

Drink it straight

No doubt all types of vinegar taste awful. Many people drink apple cider vinegar directly in a quick and undiluted shot and then eat something else to overcome the bitter taste. This can actually do more harm to your body than good. Due to the high acetic acid content, you can risk your stomach and esophagus. This can damage your throat as well. Therefore, do a favour to yourself and dilute the vinegar in water or juice. Experts recommend diluting one part of vinegar with ten of water.

Drink it right before bed

Even if your vinegar is diluted, you must not consume it right before you sleep. There are chances that the apple cider vinegar can move back to the esophagus when you are lying down. Even if you are taking the vinegar at any random hour of the day, you should remain upright for around 30 minutes to prevent the acid affect the esophagus.

Put it directly on your skin

Apple cider vinegar can be used as toner for skin breakouts because of its anti inflammatory properties. It also balances the ph level of the skin and helps dry up the acne spots and remove dandruff. However beneficial it is, you should use it in diluted form on the skin. Also, minimize its contact with the skin as it can damage the skin cells and cause chemical burn spots. Again dilute one part of vinegar with ten parts of water.

Drink it right after meals

Apple cider vinegar works best when consumed empty stomach. This can result in weight loss and better digestion. Drinking apple cider vinegar right after meals can delay the digestion process by making the stomach acetic. Wait for at least 20 minutes after your meals.

Breathe it in

When you are drinking apple cider vinegar, don’t smell or breathe it in. This is because the smell of vinegar can cause burning sensation in the lungs and can do more harm.

Drinking lots of it

Apple cider vinegar can do wonders to your body, but this doesn’t mean that you drink it crazily. Too much of a good thing can actually be a problem. If you are starting to drink it for the first time, it is advised to initially let your body adapt to it. There are chances that your body might not accept it which can cause stomach upset or irritation. You can start small and later adjust yourself accordingly. Even if it goes well with your body, it is advised not to consume more than two tablespoons at a time.

Myth Busting – Apple Cider Vinegar for Acne

According to different internet sources, apple cider vinegar is being touted as an ancient remedy that has stood the test of time. Some say it’s a “golden nectar” that’s as close to a cure-all as you can get. It’s only reasonable that, as documented by glowing user reports, it can also treat acne.

But is apple cider vinegar (ACV) really the panacea it’s being promoted as?

In this post, we’ll examine what, if any, health benefits you can expect to receive from drinking ACV as well as applying it topically. Many people swear by ACV, saying that it really cleared their skin of acne. However, others say they got burned while trying it. Let take a deeper look at ACV and see what the science says about it.

Does apple cider vinegar help with acne?

Many of the purported benefits from apple cider vinegar come from either drinking it or applying it topically. However, as we delve into this supposed treatment option, there is not much research or concrete data to back up these claims.

There’s seemingly no end to the health benefits of apple cider vinegar. It’s claimed to be effective for anything, from curing cancer to resolving digestive problems. As such, there are many opinions on the topic.

From what I could find, there are several benefits regarding apple cider vinegar:

  • Reduces blood sugar and insulin levels
  • Acts as an antibacterial and antiviral agent
  • Provides a source of nutrition
  • Supports digestive health
  • Aids detoxification and bodily toxin removal
  • Alkalizes the body and removes excess acids

Let’s take a look at these claims and examine the evidence behind them.

Reduces blood sugar and insulin levels

Insulin is the cornerstone of hormonal acne. It can increase the levels of other hormones linked to acne and make your skin more sensitive to them. If you’ve been following this blog, I’ve written about the importance of reducing insulin levels many times.

This is one of the more plausible claims made for apple cider vinegar. A handful of small studies have shown that vinegar indeed reduces post-meal blood sugar and insulin levels. A published study on women with PCOS showed that daily ingestion of vinegar reduced insulin resistance and improved hormonal profile. In this study, the women had 1 tablespoon of apple vinegar every day for 90 days. The effect on insulin resistance was quite small and didn’t reach statistical significance. Another study on diabetic patients showed a 30% decrease in insulin resistance.

In case it’s not clear, a decrease in insulin resistance means the cells respond better to insulin which, in turn, reduces the overall insulin level.

One problem with all these studies is that they are very small with only 8 to 12 participants per study. As far as scientific evidence goes, it may be hard to make strong conclusions based on such small studies.

Furthermore, this blood sugar and insulin lowering effect is not completely exclusive to apple cider vinegar. It applies to every type of vinegar. Acetic acid (the acid found in vinegar) can slow stomach emptying and interfere with enzymes that digest carbohydrates. As a result, carbohydrates eaten with vinegar enter the bloodstream more slowly which reduces blood sugar and insulin spikes.

Bottom line: Vinegar may have mildly positive effect on blood sugar and insulin levels, but the effect is fairly small and applies to all forms of vinegar.

Acts as an antibacterial and antiviral agent

Yes, vinegar is an acid and can kill bacteria and virus. However, most of these antibacterial and antiviral actions were studied in a test tube. Therefore, drinking it might not be a practical way to prevent or cure all infections.

Topically applied, it may treat some infections. But there are still some nuanced points to consider:

Although investigations have demonstrated the effectiveness of diluted vinegar (2% acetic acid solution at pH 2) for the treatment of ear infections (otitis externa, otitis media, and granular myringitis),[17,18] the low pH of these solutions may irritate inflamed skin and damage cochlear outer hair cells.

In the popular media, vinegar is commonly recommended for treating nail fungus, head lice, and warts, yet scientific support for these treatment strategies is lacking. Takano-Lee and colleagues[24] demonstrated that, of 7 home remedies tested, vinegar was the least effective for eliminating lice or inhibiting the hatching of eggs. Scattered reports suggest that the successive topical application of highly concentrated acetic acid solutions (up to 99%) alleviated warts,[25,26] presumably due to the mechanical destruction of wart tissue.

Vinegar: Medicinal Uses and Antiglycemic Effect – Medscape General Medicine

Bottom line: Vinegar is an acid which may clear some topical infections, but it can also cause skin irritation, and even severe damage if not used properly (see the section on chemical burns below).

Provides a source of nutrition

Apple cider vinegar is claimed to be a rich source of various vitamins and minerals, especially potassium. Yet, nutritional analysis shows the contrary. It’s claimed to be a good source of potassium where 1 tablespoon of ACV gives you 11 milligrams of potassium. If we look more closely, however, that is only 0.2% of the recommended daily intake.

Bottom line: Perhaps apple cider vinegar has other enzymes or nutrients. Some products claim they contain apple cider vinegar that is fortified, or combined with vitamins and minerals. Still, there is not enough scientific data to support its use. The standard nutritional analysis does not show any evidence for exceptional nutrition.

Supports digestive health

Many sources claim ACV is an excellent digestive tonic. It’s not clear where this claim originated as there is no supporting scientific data. Vinegar is an acid, so it’s not completely implausible that drinking it prior to a meal could be helpful for people with low stomach acid. That said, compared to the acids in your stomach, vinegar is a fairly weak acid and may have negligible benefits.

Vinegar is a product of fermentation, much like yogurt. Some sources claim that unfiltered vinegars contain probiotic bacteria. The Vinegar Institute, for example, says that the “Mother of Vinegar” is cellulose produced by acetobacter, an acidic strain of bacteria. One thing to note though is that this strain of bacteria is different from what resides in your gut. In other words, it’s unlikely that they have any probiotic effect.

Some people claim that ACV is a prebiotic, i.e. it supports the growth of healthy bacteria. This may be true, but apples are prebiotic sources in and of themselves. Eating one apple may actually provide more prebiotics than ACV.

Bottom line: Without reliable data, it’s hard to say whether apple cider vinegar has any effect on digestion.

Aids detoxification and bodily toxin removal

To preface this section, anytime you see claims like ‘detoxifies your body’, it’s important to differentiate between fact and fiction.

Many alt-med proponents believe that we are continually polluting our bodies with unhealthy lifestyles. Their solution is to buy detox kits and follow certain detox protocols.

It’s true that many people eat poorly, especially with processed foods that contain substances which are harmful to health. However, aside from healthy diet and lifestyle, there’s no evidence to support additional detoxification therapies nor does your body need any detoxification support. Science-Based Life has an interesting article looking at how detoxification may be a hoax.

Bottom line: There is no conclusive evidence to show that ACV exhibits detoxification properties or that detoxification is beneficial for overall health.

Alkalizes the body and removes excess acids

Some people claim that unhealthy diet and lifestyle cause acidosis – a buildup of acids in the body. It is believed that acids reduce the pH of your blood which may be harmful as it encourages bacterial growth. Further claims suggest that ACV reduces acid build up in the body and makes it more alkaline. How it does this is never entirely explained.

Bottom line: This acid-alkaline theory of disease contains flaws with limited supporting evidence. The American Institute for Cancer Research goes so far as to say it’s “in stark contrast to everything we know about the chemistry of the human body”.

Does drinking apple cider vinegar help with acne?

There is no concrete evidence to show that drinking apple cider vinegar has any real health benefits. Vinegars, in general, may be somewhat helpful in maintaining blood sugar and insulin levels. However, there is also a lack of evidence behind these claims. Many of the claimed benefits are anecdotal or reported from small sample studies.

Apple cider vinegar toner for acne

Some people like to use apple cider vinegar as a toner instead of drinking it. It has been recommended by big Hollywood stars, such as Scarlett Johansson and Hilary Duff, who swear by it. Proponents claim that wiping your face with diluted ACV is almost guaranteed to get rid of acne.

In contrast to drinking, there may be some rationale for using ACV topically. As an acid, it does have keratolytic effects. It breaks the bonds between dead skin cells and keeps skin pores open. While it has never been tested in humans, it’s possible that topical ACV can control acne-causing bacteria on the skin.

That said, there is not enough evidence to consider it a treatment of choice. Although acetic acid, found in ACV, is classified as a weak acid, it is still too strong to be used on the skin.

How to dilute ACV for topical use

According to the University of Washington, Department of Chemistry, vinegar is ~5% acetic acid solution which is ~0.9 M. This means that its pH is approximately 2.4, almost the same as that of the stomach acid.

Most brands of apple cider vinegar in the market have a pH in the range of – 2 to 3. Therefore, it is critically important to dilute it before applying on the skin. Otherwise, it can cause severe irritation and burns at the site of application.

The following table gives a rough idea of how dilution will affect pH. Because the normal skin pH is below 5, even 1:4 dilution can cause problems in some individuals. If you have sensitive skin, consider diluting more.

Is it safe to use apple cider vinegar as an acne treatment?

As I have mentioned, ACV is a fairly strong acid and using it is not without risks.

Chemical burns from topical application of apple cider vinegar

Interestingly, if you search for medical literature on apple cider vinegar, one of the first things you’ll find are case reports of chemical burn injuries following topical application of ACV. Some of the case reports are as follows:

  • A 25-day-old infant developed burn injuries when his grandmother applied ACV on his chest in an effort to bring down fever.
  • An 8-year-old boy developed burn injuries on his leg after his mother applied cotton balls soaked in apple cider vinegar in an effort to treat a viral infection.
  • A 14-year-old girl presented with two erosions on her nose after applying ACV to a nevi, or mole, to remove it. It was applied daily and covered with a bandage for three consecutive days.
  • A 59-year-old woman twisted her ankle while hiking. She treated it with a homemade poultice of 50:50 flour and rice vinegar (contains the same acid that ACV) and then applied a bandage over the area. Her feet got serious burn injuries (see the picture below).

Here’s a picture of the burn injury to the leg of the 8-year old boy.

Here’s a picture of skin wounds after applying ACV to the nose per an internet-based protocol for nevi removal.

And here’s the grisly damage the 59-year old woman inflicted on herself.

Now, it must be said that, in all of these cases, the acid was in contact with the skin for quite a while, or between 2 and 8 hours. It’s highly unlikely that a short contact time of 5 to 20 seconds causes any harm. However, caution is advised.

Please don’t do what some articles and videos suggest – leave the vinegar on your skin overnight.

Esophageal injury from apple cider vinegar supplements

Another case study reported esophageal injury (the tube connecting your mouth to your stomach) following ingestion of apple cider vinegar capsules. Scientists tested various ACV capsules and found that the pH-values ranged from 2.9 to 5.7. In fact, most capsules had miniscule amounts of ACV and were mostly just citric acid.

This is one reason oral supplements may not be the best option. Because of lax regulations, you, as a consumer, have no way of truly knowing what’s inside the supplement.

Dental erosion from drinking apple cider vinegar

A 15-year old Moroccan girl suffered bad dental erosion after using apple cider vinegar. She reported hearing about potential benefits for weight loss. Her routine consisted of a glass of apple cider vinegar mixed with water every day.

Takeaway

There’s no substantial evidence to support some of the extensive health claims made for apple cider vinegar. After all, it is primarily known as a food ingredient, not a medicine. All vinegars may be somewhat helpful in maintaining blood sugar and insulin levels, but this effect is not specific to apple cider vinegar. ACV might improve digestion, but, again, there’s no strong evidence to support this claim.

Used topically, it may help to keep the skin pores open and control acne-causing bacteria. However, it should never be put directly on the skin. If used topically, it needs to be diluted first before being used as a spot treatment only.

Due to individual skin characteristics, everyone may react differently to ACV. Those with sensitive skin may need to take extra precautions when applying ACV. It is best to try it out on a smaller area, such as parts of the neck or on the earlobe. When applying ACV, it should never be left on for too long, especially overnight as some online sources suggest.

Overall, it’s always possible that apple cider vinegar works through some yet unknown mechanism. But based on current evidence, it’s difficult to completely recommend ACV as a sole treatment for different ailments and acne.

What is your experience with ACV? Have you tried it? If so, how did it go?

Natural Solution: How I Use Apple Cider Vinegar to Treat Acne

Today I’ll be sharing my natural method for dealing with acne and blemishes. I’ve only just discovered it thanks to Jen (Eco Warrior Princess editor-in-chief). And it’s really very simple. You can make it yourself and use ingredients from your kitchen.

I use:

Apple cider vinegar

Tap water (or rainwater if you collect it yourself)

I drink it as a detox drink and I apply it topically. Here’s what happened after 7 days of using this apple cider vinegar solution…

Day 1:

So I’ve just got home and had my shower. I washed all my makeup off, I have got my one part apple cider vinegar and three parts water ready to drink. As I’m drinking it I get goosebumps from head to toe and dry reach a couple of times as it’s  not the most pleasant tasting drink. I splash some directly onto my face avoiding eye contact. I really hope this works because my skin is giving me some major grief.

Day 2:

This morning I woke up and actually noticed that my skin was not as oily and it had evened out my skin tone. My face doesn’t look so red and irritated. I know in order for this to work it’s best that I go makeup-free for a couple of days but I’m really not that comfortable going without makeup seeing as  I am attending high school five days a week. Regardless, I will continue with drinking the detox and splashing some of it on my face before I go to bed each night.

Day 3:

I am really liking this, I woke up this morning really happy with my skin its calmed down a lot over the last couple of days. Usually I wake up with red lumps everywhere that are really uncomfortable and sore to touch, and my uneven skin tone often looks horrible. I usually have red cheeks and when I started breaking out at thirteen it was annoying to see my whole ‘T’ zone entirely red and I had pimples everywhere. Not just a couple here and there, but full blown acne. It’s really embarrassing and has brought my confidence down heaps. But this apple cider vinegar detox drink and toner is giving me some hope. Despite me wearing foundation every day and clogging up my pores, during the night it works like magic.

Day 4:

My skin is not perfect nor is it clear or fully evened out, but I can honestly say the apple cider vinegar has made a big difference. Aside from the fact that I dread drinking it, it is literally the cheapest miracle I have come across and I’m really loving the results I’m getting.

Day 5:

I am really impressed with this stuff. Nothing has worked for me as good as this. It seems I’ve almost tried every product, every detox drink, every natural home-made face scrub or mask, but this by far has worked the best. And it’s so simple, cheap and effective. Now mind you, my skin is certainly not perfect and maybe it would be a lot better if I went on a makeup strike but at least I see signs of progress. I’m just happy that my face isn’t one big pimply scabby head anymore. Loving this!

Day 6:

What can I say I’m not completely happy with my skin yet I don’t think I ever will be until its smooth and flawless, but I think with the big difference this apple cider vinegar mixture has made so far, I’m confident that my skin will improve so much that I won’t have to wear makeup. Hopefully.

Day 7:

It might be my last day of writing this review but it doesn’t mean I’m going to stop drinking and applying the apple cider vinegar tonic. I intend to continue using this method not only for my skin but as an overall detox.

Apple Cider Vinegar Acne Treatment & Detox Recipe

I recommend this apple cider vinegar solution to ANYONE with skin problems. It’s truly amazing and you can see the results pretty quickly. It’s also cheap and effective. One of the only natural acne treatment methods I’ve tried that gives me effective results, and super-fast! So if you’re interested, I’ll leave my simple method below so you too can give it a try. And make sure to spread the word about this amazing method! Will save people from spending a fortune on products that just don’t work. Wish I had known about it sooner.

Detox Drink Method

Before you go to bed at night – or first thing in the morning – mix one part apple cider vinegar and three parts water in a glass, drink it. You can use a full size glass or a shot glass. Take your pic. I use a normal drinking glass. Now scull it like I did unless you like the taste (I personally don’t).

Acne Toner Solution Method

Before going to bed or after you’ve had a shower, remove all products from your skin with cleanser so that your skin is bare and has no trace of makeup, dirt or grime. Next mix the same parts of vinegar and water again. Splash on your face and try to avoid eye cotton (or you can use a cotton ball to spread it evenly) and let it dry. You can sleep with it on but you’ll be able to smell the vinegar. If that’s a problem for you light a scented candle before lights out.

90,000 How to get rid of acne marks on the face

There are a lot of ways to get rid of acne on the face and return the skin to its former blooming appearance. But it often happens that it is possible to cope with acne on the face quite easily, but getting rid of their marks on the face is far from immediately. Therefore, before treating acne, think about the result and choose more gentle skin care methods. If, nevertheless, traces of acne remain …

First, you should know that traces of acne remain if they were not disinfected at the initial stage of their appearance or if antiseptic rules are not followed during self-removal.It is best to get rid of acne in a beauty salon or dermatologist’s office, rather than self-medicate. But what if the acne marks have already remained on the face and do not go away without treatment?

How to remove acne blemishes with lemon balm and volcanic clay?

In order to get rid of traces of acne on the face, scars from them, a mask made of blue volcanic clay with the addition of lemon balm essential oil is considered a very effective folk remedy. Pour 4-5 drops of oil into a cup, add crushed blue clay, add water until a not very thick mass is obtained and apply to problem areas. After 30-40 minutes, remove the mask with warm water. In addition to wound healing, lemon balm oil also has a relaxing effect. So this procedure is recommended to be carried out shortly before bedtime.

Lemon juice and acne treatment

All kinds of bleaching agents are good at removing traces of acne. The classic, time-honored recipe is the use of lemon juice. The following recipe is easy to prepare and effective: beat 1 tablespoon of juice into a foam with 1 egg white.Apply the resulting mass to problem areas for 20 minutes.

Dermabrasion is the most effective way to get rid of acne marks

Dermabrasion will help to remove fine wrinkles and get rid of acne marks. This procedure is carried out in most beauty salons. It is a deep mechanical peeling of the face. If the spots are too dark, you may need several treatments. Dermabrasion is best done in autumn so that the active sun does not harm the delicate sensitive skin after the procedure.

Masks from badyagi

Good results are obtained by using badyagi. Badiaga is a freshwater sponge, dried and ground into powder. Badyagi masks, irritating the skin, cause a rush of blood to its surface and thereby help to absorb even the most old spots. Badiagi gel or powder mixed with any face cream is applied to clean face skin and left on for 20 minutes. After that, the mask is washed off with running water.

Vinegar wipes help get rid of acne stains

Ordinary grape or apple cider vinegar can also help get rid of acne marks.100 ml of water is mixed with 30 ml of vinegar and the resulting lotion is wiped over the face.

Honey and the treatment of acne marks

The most delicious and fragrant recipe for acne spots is a honey mask with cinnamon. 1 teaspoon of May honey is mixed with 2-3 pinches of cinnamon powder and applied to problem areas for 30 minutes. To increase the effectiveness of the mask, it is recommended to do it every other day.

St. John’s wort and acne treatment

Another of the most effective folk recipes – rubbing the face with tincture of St. John’s wort.To prepare the tincture, take 3 tablespoons of dried St. John’s wort flowers, pour 200 g of alcohol over them and leave for 13, or better – 15 days. You need to wipe your face with an infused mixture.

Parsley

Removes acne spots and improves complexion with frozen broth of parsley. Chop 50 grams of dried parsley, pour half a liter of hot water over them and simmer over low heat for a quarter of an hour. The resulting broth is set aside for cooling, then, filtered through cheesecloth, poured into cocktail ice molds and frozen. The effect of this simple procedure surpasses all expectations – acne spots practically disappear, and the skin of the face becomes soft and dull.

The most important thing in dealing with acne spots is not to give up and stop halfway. If for the full effect it is recommended to apply masks a certain number of times or go through the entire course of cosmetic procedures, do not interrupt the treatment when the result is already becoming noticeable. Go to the end, and then after the treatment of acne, there will be no stains, and your skin will be even matte.

90,000 Apple cider vinegar and baking soda for acne: how effective are they?

If you have acne, you know that there are a million different products that claim to be the magic cure for blackheads, whiteheads and acne. But which ones really work? This article discusses apple cider vinegar and baking soda for acne treatments.

Acne can be a persistent skin condition that keeps many people looking for answers all the time, but luckily there are many products that do help.

You just need to know what condition your skin is in, the condition of the acne you usually get, and what appears to be causing your acne. Then you can find a solution that suits your situation.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar (also known as ACV) is obtained from apples during a fermentation process. It comes in liquid form and when applied topically is usually applied as a tonic, but can also act as a spot treatment.

Although there is insufficient scientific evidence to support most claims about apple cider vinegar, theoretically, its properties could potentially provide the following benefits to the skin:

  • Balances Skin pH: Since apple cider vinegar can help balance the pH of the outer layer of your skin, it supports optimal skin function by producing the right amount of oil and fighting acne-causing bacteria.
  • Exfoliates: “Apple cider vinegar contains malic acid, which is similar to alpha hydroxy acid,” says Green.”Malic acid works well on acne-prone skin as it gently exfoliates, unclogging pores and killing bacteria.”
  • Fights Blackheads: According to Green, apple cider vinegar, which has antibacterial agents, can also be mixed with baking soda and water to exfoliate and help reduce acne breakouts.
  • Improves Hyperpigmentation: Green says that the malic acid in apple cider vinegar may be helpful in treating any hyperpigmentation problems like dark spots.”Malic acid is known for its ability to decrease melanin production,” she says. “Melanin is what gives the skin its pigmentation; hence, malic acid does a great job at reducing hyperpigmentation. ”

Baking soda

Annecdotal evidence suggests that baking soda is effective for acne. However, there have been no studies to evaluate whether baking soda works for acne or not.

The FDA has not approved this popular home remedy for acne.Proponents of this popular home remedy believe that baking soda can help reduce acne, depending on your skin type.

Baking soda is said to dry out the skin, and this property helps to reduce pimples and reduce inflammation. It is also said to help in the following way:

  • Baking soda has anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve swelling and redness. Not only does it help soothe outbreaks, it also soothes rashes, irritation, and sunburn.
  • Baking soda is a physical exfoliator. It contains small particles that remove dirt and dead skin cells from the pores. It is also relatively less irritating than most exfoliators, but it is also more effective.
  • Plus, it not only helps fight and prevent acne, but also minimizes the appearance of acne scars and pigmentation.
  • It helps to absorb excess oil from the skin. This, in turn, dries out pimples and blemishes, helping them heal faster.

How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda for Acne

You will need

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • also 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Delivery method

  1. Dilute apple cider vinegar with water.
  2. Add baking soda to the ACV-water mixture.
  3. Apply the paste to the affected areas (as a spot treatment). Leave it on for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Wash off with cold water.
  5. Apply moisturizer.
  6. Do this twice a week.

Why It Works

Apple cider vinegar is said to help maintain pH balance by preventing baking soda from making your skin too alkaline. Apple cider vinegar also contains lactic acid, which can help reduce acne.

Other acne treatments using baking soda

If face masks are not for you, or if you are looking for solutions specifically for acne scarring or spot treatments, there are also baking soda solutions:

Add to your current face wash

Adding baking soda to your daily face wash can help with acne, but even if you have very oily skin, you only need to add baking soda once or twice a week.

Even more, and you are likely to see irritation or dryness of the skin, which can lead to even more acne.

Just wet your face, put some washing liquid on the palm of your hand, add half a teaspoon of baking soda, stir with your hands and apply to your face. Spray gently with water, then pat dry.

Spot machining

If you have persistent blackheads in one specific area but don’t want to dry out your entire face, you can use baking soda for acne as a concentrated spot treatment to remove dead skin cells and sebum from your pores.

Pour 2 teaspoons of baking soda into a small bowl and slowly add water until it forms a thick paste. Apply to the area you want to treat and leave for 20 minutes. Rinse gently and pat dry with a towel.

Scar treatment

Some baking soda gurus say that baking soda can help heal acne scars due to its exfoliating nature. The idea is that the baking soda cleanses the dead skin cells by stimulating the creation of new, non-pigmented cells that will take the place of the scar tissue.

There is no research to support this, but anecdotal evidence suggests it might be worth a try. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of water and use a cotton swab or cotton pad to apply the liquid mixture to the scars.

Leave it on for 15-20 minutes, then rinse.

If you notice acne scars darkening, discontinue use.
