Hangovers seem to be the body’s way of reminding us about the hazards of overindulgence. Physiologically, it’s a group effort: Diarrhea, fatigue, headache, nausea, and shaking are the classic symptoms. Sometimes, systolic (the upper number) blood pressure goes up, the heart beats faster than normal, and sweat glands overproduce — evidence that the “fight or flight” response is revved up. Some people become sensitive to light or sound. Others suffer a spinning sensation (vertigo).

The causes are as varied as the symptoms. Alcohol is metabolized into acetaldehyde, a substance that’s toxic at high levels. However, concentrations rarely get that high, so that’s not the complete explanation.

Drinking interferes with brain activity during sleep, so a hangover may be a form of sleep deprivation. Alcohol scrambles the hormones that regulate our biological clocks, which may be why a hangover can feel like jet lag, and vice versa. Alcohol can also trigger migraines, so some people may think they’re hung over when it’s really an alcohol-induced migraine they’re suffering.

Hangovers begin after blood alcohol levels start to fall. In fact, according to some experts, the worst symptoms occur when levels reach zero.

The key ingredient seems to be “drinking to intoxication”; how much you drank to get there is less important. In fact, several studies suggest that light and moderate drinkers are more vulnerable to getting a hangover than heavy drinkers. Yet there’s also seemingly contradictory research showing that people with a family history of alcoholism have worse hangovers. Researchers say some people may end up with drinking problems because they drink in an effort to relieve hangover symptoms.

Dr. Robert Swift, a researcher at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Rhode Island, coauthored one of the few review papers on hangovers in 1998. It’s still one of the most frequently cited sources on the topic. The rundown on hangover remedies that follows is based on that review, an interview with Dr. Swift, and several other sources.

1. Hair of the dog. Drinking to ease the symptoms of a hangover is sometimes called taking the hair of the dog, or hair of the dog that bit you. The notion is that hangovers are a form of alcohol withdrawal, so a drink or two will ease the withdrawal.

There may be something to it, says Dr. Swift. Both alcohol and certain sedatives, such as benzodiazepines like diazepam (Valium), interact with GABA receptors on brain cells, he explains. And it’s well documented that some people have withdrawal symptoms from short-acting sedatives as they wear off. Perhaps the brain reacts similarly as blood alcohol levels begin to drop.

Even so, Dr. Swift advises against using alcohol as a hangover remedy. “The hair of the dog just perpetuates a cycle,” he says. “It doesn’t allow you to recover.”

2. Drink fluids. Alcohol promotes urination because it inhibits the release of vasopressin, a hormone that decreases the volume of urine made by the kidneys. If your hangover includes diarrhea, sweating, or vomiting, you may be even more dehydrated. Although nausea can make it difficult to get anything down, even just a few sips of water might help your hangover.

3. Get some carbohydrates into your system. Drinking may lower blood sugar levels, so theoretically some of the fatigue and headaches of a hangover may be from a brain working without enough of its main fuel. Moreover, many people forget to eat when they drink, further lowering their blood sugar. Toast and juice is a way to gently nudge levels back to normal.

4. Avoid darker-colored alcoholic beverages. Experiments have shown that clear liquors, such as vodka and gin, tend to cause hangovers less frequently than dark ones, such as whiskey, red wine, and tequila. The main form of alcohol in alcoholic beverages is ethanol, but the darker liquors contain chemically related compounds (congeners), including methanol. According to Dr. Swift’s review paper, the same enzymes process ethanol and methanol, but methanol metabolites are especially toxic, so they may cause a worse hangover.

5. Take a pain reliever, but not Tylenol. Aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, other brands), and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may help with the headache and the overall achy feelings. NSAIDs, though, may irritate a stomach already irritated by alcohol. Don’t take acetaminophen (Tylenol). If alcohol is lingering in your system, it may accentuate acetaminophen’s toxic effects on the liver.

6. Drink coffee or tea. Caffeine may not have any special anti-hangover powers, but as a stimulant, it could help with the grogginess. Coffee is a diuretic, though, so it may exacerbate dehydration.

7. B vitamins and zinc. A study recently published in The Journal of Clinical Medicine evaluated the diets for 24 hours before and after excessive drinking occurred. It was a small study and results were based on the participants saying what they ate. However, they did find that people whose food and beverage consumption contained greater amounts of zinc and B vitamins had less severe hangovers.

According to Dr. Coupet, alcohol enters the bloodstream within minutes of your first sip and is then absorbed by the digestive tract — starting in the stomach before it is processed by the liver — as your body works to break it down, also known as alcohol metabolism.

During alcohol metabolism, a toxic byproduct called acetaldehyde is created, which your body works to eliminate, explains Peter Malamet, DO, an emergency medicine physician at Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“How you feel can often depend on how fast you metabolize acetaldehyde and how fast you can get rid of it,” says Dr. Malamet. “Some people don’t break down acetaldehyde as well as others.”

Although the bulk of alcohol metabolism occurs in the liver, it is believed that some alcohol metabolism can occur in the pancreas and brain, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.­

So what exactly causes that extreme thirst, horrible headache and feelings of nausea?

“The impurities in alcohol (which vary from one type of alcohol to another) can also contribute to the severity of the hangover. In other words, the more pure the alcohol, the less severe the hangover,” says Kelly Kennedy, RD, Everyday Health staff nutritionist.

Kennedy advises drinking in moderation and emphasizes that there’s no real cure for a hangover except not to get one in the first place.

But what if you want to enjoy a few cocktails and not feel terrible the following day? There are a few things you can do to ease the pain.

1. Drink Water to Avoid Dehydration

“The alcohol in your drink acts as a diuretic, which can make you urinate more,” explains Kennedy. “This can lead to dehydration, which is one of the major causes of hangover symptoms.”

In other words, that desert-level thirst that wakes you up in the wee hours of the morning is a signal that you’re well on the way to hungover. The amount of water that you take in should equal that amount you lose, and alcohol can upset this balance.

“If you know you’ll be drinking that night, stay well-hydrated throughout the day and have plenty to drink before heading to bed,” she says. And if you do wake up with a hangover, do your best to drink as much water as you can. “Even having little sips every so often will help.”

2. Drink Other Fluids to Restore Electrolytes

“Because alcohol is a diuretic and you’re urinating a lot, you’re also losing electrolytes, and you can experience dizziness, nausea, and cramping as a result” says Malamet, who credits an electrolyte imbalance as one of the leading causes of feeling fatigued from a hangover.

Research published in February 2015 in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research showed that drinking electrolytes after long periods of dehydration can significantly help restore important minerals, like sodium, potassium, and calcium.

What electrolyte-rich drinks should you reach for? Kennedy recommends sports drinks and broth to help restore and replace lost electrolytes and to get you back on the mend faster.

Fermented drinks like kombucha can also be beneficial to drink when feeling nutrient-depleted because they’re rich in minerals, antioxidants, and good-for-you-gut bacteria.

3. Eat Nutrient-Rich Food Before and After Drinking

To prevent a hangover, past research has shown pairing alcohol with food can help your body more efficiently metabolize the alcohol. The digestion of food before or during alcohol consumption can help increase anti-diuretic hormone levels (ADH), sugar fructose, and blood flow to the liver, all which work to help your body more quickly break down alcohol.

What do you eat if you’re already hungover? Contrary to popular belief, greasy foods will not help you to absorb a hangover. “Craving a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich the morning after a night out drinking is your body’s response to low blood sugar and dehydration,” explains Maggie Michalczyk, RDN, a dietitian and food blogger based in Chicago.

But it’s not going to absorb the alcohol — that’s already made its way through your liver. Instead, complex carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables are your best bet, says Michalczyk.

Experts recommend reaching for fruits like bananas, because they are chock full of minerals like potassium that alcohol can deplete. A roughly 7-inch-long banana has 422 milligrams (mg) of potassium and 32 mg of magnesium, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). If you can handle the sound of a blender, a smoothie of coconut water and banana, two tablespoons of peanut butter, and your favorite protein powder is what Michalczyk orders.

4. Try Ginger to Ease Nausea

Doctors and nutritionists alike agree that ginger is one of the best natural remedies for soothing an upset stomach, which is often a common symptom of a hangover.

“Ginger can aid digestion and in this way can ease stomach upset,” explains Kennedy, who credits alcohol irritating the lining of the stomach as one of the reasons for hangover-related nausea.

The chemical compounds in ginger are believed to help ease stomach pain and aid digestion. A meta-analysis published in December 2019 in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that ginger reduced vomiting in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment by 60 percent and fatigue by 80 percent.

You can enjoy this superfood in many different ways. For soothing an upset stomach, try brewing some ginger tea or mixing fresh ginger into a smoothie.

5. Have Chamomile to Reduce Anxiety (or Hangxiety)

For some, hangover-induced anxiety, or hangxiety, can be as taxing emotionally as some of the physical symptoms of a hangover.

If this doesn’t sound familiar, it might be because hangxiety affects us all differently. In a study published March 2019 in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, researchers discovered that shy people had greater anxiety levels the day after drinking alcohol.

Michalczyk suggests chamomile tea to calm any emotionally overwhelming feelings brought on by drinking, and research supports using this flowering plant to soothe anxiety. Double bonus: Chamomile can help you sleep more soundly and relieve an upset stomach, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

6. Restore Energy With Vitamin B and Protect Immunity With Vitamin C

Many hangover symptoms result from nutrient deficiencies, and vitamin B is particularly affected by alcohol use, according to a study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Vitamin B is responsible for energy, brain function, and keeping the immune system and nervous system acting properly. A depletion of vitamin B can be associated with feelings of fatigue and low energy levels. If you still can’t get your mind off breakfast sandwiches, Michalczyk suggests eating eggs — which are a great source of the energy-producing B vitamins that alcohol flushes out — with lean protein like turkey bacon and a whole-grain English muffin.

According to experts, another vitamin to be mindful of when recovering from a hangover is vitamin C. Research published in 2015 in Alcohol Research Current Reviews showed a connection between alcohol use and a weakened immune system, impairing the body’s ability to defend itself. To avoid opening yourself up to colds, viruses, and potential alcohol-related illness, load up on vitamin C with fruits and vegetables like broccoli, which has 135 percent of the daily value per cup, according to the USDA. Also reach for oranges, red bell peppers, kiwis, and strawberries.

7. Avoid Medication That Can Cause Adverse Effects With Alcohol

There are certain drugs that can interact with alcohol and cause severe hangover-like symptoms, explains Malamet. One in particular to be mindful of is Flagyl (metronidazole), which is often used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, stomach, vagina, joints, or respiratory tract.

Other common medication, when consumed with alcohol, can cause dizziness, drowsiness, impaired concentration, and an increased risk of overdose, according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. These include antidepressants, like Effexor, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, and Zoloft; stimulants, such as Adderall (Adderall XR) or Ritalin (methylphenidaten); and benzodiazepines that treat anxiety, including Xanax (Alprazolam) and Clonazepam (Klonopin). Allergy medication can negatively interact with alcohol, as well.

Malamet recommends always speaking with your doctor about possible medication interactions. “Some medications interact with the body’s ability to break down the alcohol, which can increase the severity of the hangover,” he says.

8. Go Back to Bed to Restore Circadian Rhythm

One of the most restorative remedies you can try when hungover is simply to get more sleep. In fact, delayed cognitive function during a hangover is likely linked to the poor sleep associated with alcohol use, according to Harvard Health. In fact, a study published in December 2018 in the journal Addiction found that a hangover may impair sustained attention and negatively impact everyday tasks like driving.

The National Sleep Foundation notes that alcohol disrupts your circadian rhythm and prevents REM sleep; it’s unlikely you’ll fall into a deep, restful sleep after drinking more than a glass of wine or two. Poor sleep, according to Harvard, is linked to anxiety, irritability, and depressed mood, and alcohol, as a depressant, exacerbates these effects.

“It’s been shown that you’re unable to achieve the usual REM sleep cycle when drinking alcohol, so even if you’re getting a couple hours of sleep, you’re probably not getting good sleep,” says Malamet.

Drinking alcohol can cause fatigue, nausea, brain fog, and low mood the next day. People who are experiencing a hangover feel these symptoms partly because of the after-effects of drinking alcohol, including:

  • dehydration
  • electrolyte imbalances
  • alcohol withdrawal
  • low blood sugar
  • stomach and intestine inflammation
  • sleep disturbances

Home hangover cures aim to treat these symptoms. There is no specific food, drink, or magic pill to cure a hangover, though certain remedies can ease the symptoms in some people.

In this article, we look at the effectiveness of some common methods people use to try to cure hangovers.

While there is little direct research into how effective over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are for people with a hangover, certain medicines may help tackle the symptoms, as discussed below.

Do anti-inflammatories help?

Aspirin and other anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, are effective at relieving aches and pains.

These drugs can reduce the inflammation in the body that alcohol causes to relieve headaches and muscle aches.

People should use anti-inflammatories with caution when hungover, as the medication can further irritate the stomach lining. Chronic use of these drugs can lead to stomach ulcers. Some doctors caution against taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach for this reason.

Do antacids help?

Antacids work by neutralizing the stomach acid to relieve an upset stomach. Taking antacids can reduce nausea, heartburn, and indigestion that drinking causes. This is a good option for people who tend to feel sick when hungover.

Does acetaminophen help?

Avoid medication that contains acetaminophen during a hangover.

The liver is the organ that breaks down acetaminophen, as it does alcohol. The body is more susceptible to the toxic effects of acetaminophen when a person drinks alcohol, and this can contribute to liver damage in severe cases.

People may prefer to use anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, for pain relief instead.

Rehydrating the body by drinking water may help to improve the symptoms of a hangover.

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means that it increases the amount of urine a person passes. The resulting loss in fluid can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. These factors contribute to a hangover.

Staying hydrated while drinking alcohol could help to prevent or reduce a hangover. People can try drinking a glass of water between alcoholic drinks and just before bed.

Do rehydration powders help?

Many people also use sports drinks that contain electrolytes or rehydration powders to restore the balance of electrolytes in their bodies. There is no current research about whether or not this is an effective cure for a hangover.

Low blood sugar levels contribute to some hangover symptoms. Eating in the morning helps regulate blood sugar levels to relieve this discomfort partially.

When the body breaks down alcohol, lactic acid levels increase. This causes a drop in blood sugar levels, which can contribute towards a hangover.

Eating breakfast can help to restore blood sugar to a correct level and may improve some symptoms of a hangover.

A person’s body also needs nutritious foods that include protein, carbohydrates, healthful fats, and vitamins to repair and recover.

There is no current research to say that particular foods, such as greasy or fried breakfasts, are more effective than others. Many people believe that carbohydrates are particularly effective for “soaking up” alcohol, though research has not looked into this.

The alcohol a person drinks causes oxidative stress, leading the body to produce free radicals. Antioxidants may help with this.

Research has linked oxidative stress to many health conditions, including heart disease and cancers. Antioxidants are compounds that help mop up these free radicals.

People may benefit from eating foods high in antioxidants to reduce the negative effects of drinking alcohol.

Good dietary sources of antioxidants include:

  • berries
  • cherries
  • grapes
  • pomegranates
  • carrots
  • spinach
  • ginger
  • dark chocolate
  • nuts and seeds
  • green and black teas

Coffee and other caffeinated drinks act as stimulants, which may improve the feelings of fatigue that come with a hangover.

Coffee, black tea, and green tea contain some antioxidants that may reduce the adverse effects of alcohol consumption.

However, drinks that contain caffeine are diuretics, which may worsen the effects of dehydration in the body. Caffeine does not alter a person’s blood alcohol content, so it does not reduce the health risks relating to drinking alcohol.

Despite the prevalence of hangovers, there has been little research into developing effective treatments. Of the studies that are available, most are of low quality and remain inconclusive.

Many factors can affect the severity and length of a person’s hangover, which makes it difficult for scientists to study potential hangover cures. Elements include:

  • the type and amount of alcohol a person drinks
  • how often they drink alcohol
  • sex and age
  • body type
  • biological factors
  • personality differences

Some people may even have a genetic disposition for worse hangovers than others.

Scientists have to rely on people’s self-reported hangover symptoms, which may vary between people and depend on day-to-day factors, and these are very difficult to control scientifically.

The lack of research has left room for a wide range of myths to develop about the best ways to cure a hangover, most of which rely on anecdotal evidence.

Businesses may also make claims about specific cures to sell their products, despite little or no scientific basis.

The amount of alcohol that causes a hangover will vary from person to person. As a result, determining how much alcohol causes a hangover will involve some trial and error. It can help to be aware of alcohol guidelines set by the government.

There is currently no such thing as a cure for hangovers. Certain home remedies can help people manage some hangover symptoms, including taking anti-inflammatories or antacids, eating a nutritious breakfast, rehydrating, and eating foods that are rich in antioxidants.

However, there is little reliable research in this area. Until more systematic research is available, it is not possible to provide firm guidelines on dealing with hangovers.

Abstaining or drinking alcohol in moderation is the best way to avoid a hangover. People can reduce the severity of or prevent a hangover by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated through the night, and avoiding drinks with congeners.

We can handle covering the telltale signs of a late night by piling on concealer and squishing ungainly hair beneath a hat. But we cannot deal when it comes to hangover nausea. When the aftereffects of alcohol have us dry heaving and praying to the porcelain gods, we’d do pretty much anything to relieve an irritable belly—which can lead to a lot of mistakes.

Don’t go chugging gallons of water (that will only worsen your electrolyte imbalance), go light on the caffeine (it tends to loosen your digestive system just when you need to clamp things down in there), and please don’t make yourself vomit (that’s a pretty good way to rupture something in your throat). Instead, look to these cures for nausea, which will actually help you feel better without wrecking your system further.


The tummy trouble caused by a hangover is no match for this spicy root, which has long been a traditional cure for an upset stomach. Whether you muddle some fresh ginger at the bottom of a cup of tea, take a ginger supplement or just gnaw on a raw knob (don’t do that last one), getting ginger into your system will soothe the inner quakes.


Another folk remedy for nausea, peppermint will quickly put the damper on your upset innards, calming your overly active gut muscles and relieving any pain. The best way to fix up your system is to brew up some peppermint tea, which is typically caffeine free, avoiding the nasty effects the upper can wreck on your digestive system.

Coconut Water

Any beverage with electrolytes will help restore your sodium levels (whereas drinking straight water may actually exacerbate a sodium imbalance). While Gatorade or Pedialyte remain faves of college seniors, we usually opt for coconut water, which provides the same helpful nutrients without all the extra sugar.


You may be tempted by a big greasy cheeseburger or a Denny’s Grand Slam, but we promise these breakfasts will do more harm than good. Meanwhile, it’s pretty much impossible to object to BRAT—which stands for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. The diet is designed to be unobjectionable, made up of foods that won’t irritate the uneasiest of stomachs.


People throw the term electrolyte around a lot, but usually they just mean salt. Cook up (or more likely open a can of) some soup just like your mom used to when you were feeling queasy. 1. Check for drug-alcohol interactions.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as the saying goes. Some of the best hangover cures involve preventing their worst side effects in the first place. The effects of alcohol can sometimes be complicated by medications, such as those used to treat allergies, high cholesterol, and ADHD. Before having anything to drink, you should check with your provider or pharmacist to ensure it’s safe to mix alcohol with your regular prescriptions.  

2. Take your vitamins.

If you’re cleared to imbibe, bulking up on certain nutrients before indulging might help reduce the painful side effects the next day. “Alcohol depletes a broad range of vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, enzymes, proteins and minerals from your body,” explains Carolyn Dean, MD, a diet and nutrition expert and author. Deficiency in these vitamins and minerals can contribute to your hangover symptoms, often causing a worse hangover or prolonging the period of time it takes to get over them. 

Dr. Dean says magnesium is “the kingpin” of vitamins depleted after drinking. Age and excessive alcohol consumption over time can further deplete this mineral, increasing your hangovers and impacting your overall health. So if you’re a regular drinker, she advises supplementing daily with magnesium (preferably a liquid picometer form) as well as vitamin C and milk thistle—all of which support proper liver function.

3. Hydrate with water (and a little caffeine).

“Hangovers occur primarily due to dehydration, low blood sugar, electrolyte imbalances, and dilated blood vessels, which can lead to headaches,” says Stephen Loyd, MD, medical director of the rehab facility JourneyPure. “To treat a hangover, each of those symptoms has to be treated.”

Starting with the first of those symptoms, dehydration, Dr. Loyd says drinking water is your best bet. But he added, “Many people can benefit from caffeine, too, to help boost their energy and concentration.” Just make sure to use it in moderation as too much can worsen dehydration.

4. Try tomato juice…or Sprite.

The misery of a hangover may have you reaching for a little hair of the dog with a well-made Bloody Mary. But drinking more alcohol in an attempt to recover from a wild night out isn’t recommended. Instead, try some alanine-fortified tomato juice, researchers found that it can reduce blood alcohol levels. And after experimenting with 57 different beverage options in a lab, researchers in China concluded that Sprite may be the best drink for curing your hangover symptoms. 

5. Eat some carbs.

Heavy drinking can have an impact on blood sugar levels. (This is just one reason people with diabetes need to exercise extra caution when drinking.) It’s why Dr. Loyd says that in addition to hydrating with water, hangover sufferers should be eating. “A breakfast that is high in carbohydrates can help hydrate you and stabilize your blood sugar,” Dr. Loyd explains.

In fact, you should eat a balanced meal before drinking, along with the morning after. ResponsibleDrinking.org explains that having nutrients and calories in your body can slow alcohol absorption. 

6. Try bacon and eggs.

It’s not just your imagination that a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich magically makes you feel better. Both bacon and eggs contain an amino acid called cysteine, which scientists have found may decrease the amount of acetaldehyde in the body—one of the byproducts of alcohol metabolization that may contribute to some of your hangover symptoms. 

If you’re vegan, broccoli also contains high amounts of cysteine, so that little superfood might help to kick you out of hangover mode. 

7. Balance your electrolytes.

To stabilize your electrolytes and treat the issues that might arise from such an imbalance, Dr. Loyd says to “incorporate avocado or banana into your breakfast. Both these foods have salts and minerals the body needs to recover.” 

It’s worth noting that Cedars Sinai has reported on research that found electrolyte levels don’t actually go down when you drink alcohol, citing this as a long-standing myth. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still benefit from the extra hydration and electrolyte boost you’ll find with sports drinks like Gatorade, coconut water, Pediapops, and Pedialyte (the last two can typically be found in the baby aisle at your local grocery store).  

8. Medicate aches and pains.

Because headaches (up to and including migraines) and body aches can be among the most common symptoms of a hangover, you may find that over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, or acetaminophen can help prevent some of the worst symptoms. In fact, a 1983 study found that NSAIDs were more effective at reducing hangover symptoms than placebos.  

Margaret Aranda, MD, of Your Doctors Online suggests medicating before you ever go to bed. She recommends the following regimen:

  • Ibuprofen, 200-800 mg (unless you have stomach ulcers, in which case she says “take nothing, and don’t drink, either”) 
  • Turmeric 2000 mg, “which pretty much anyone can take”
  • Cimetidine 200 mg twice a day, “to prevent stomach ulcers”

It’s important to know that continually combining over-the-counter pain reducers and alcohol can have a negative impact on your body. So while a dose of pain relievers the night of your drinking session, before you go to bed (with a big glass of water), and then again the next day, shortly after waking up, may help reduce your symptoms—it’s not a solution you want to rely on every time. 

You may want to consider giving Alka-Seltzer a try as well. Although there is no research to back up the fizzy medicine’s treatment of hangover, the sodium bicarbonate in the ingredients may help to settle an upset stomach.

9. Hit up an oxygen bar.

Over the past decade, oxygen bars have gained popularity everywhere from Vegas to Aspen. While there is no scientific evidence to suggest it can cure a hangover, doctors say the treatment is harmless and can help ease symptoms of difficulty sleeping and dizziness. Plenty of people swear by it. 

Just avoid the flavored O2 options, which contain oils and may be dangerous to inhale. 

10. Try hangover IV drips.

Another concept that has grown in popularity in recent years is the idea of the Hangover IV Drip. Establishments are popping up across the country to administer an assortment of fluids and vitamins purported to reduce the impact of a hangover and return you to full energy in just 45 minutes. 

Again, there is (as of yet) no scientific evidence to back up the validity of claims being made regarding these IV drips. And this option isn’t cheap, running up to $250 an IV bag. But people who have opted to give the heavy in B vitamins and electrolytes bags a try claim it helps in most cases for at least a few hours.

Dr. Aranda supports this treatment plan. If you’ve woken with a hangover, she suggests getting an IV with the following (“depending again on your risk of stomach ulcers and NSAIDS”):

  • Ketorolac 30mg IV
  • Vitamin B12 or cyanocobalamin 1000 IU intravenous or subcutaneously

Once you’ve finished your IV drip, she says you should take, “cimetidine 200 mg tablets twice that day to prevent stomach ulcers.

11. Consume some ginger.

“Ginger is an excellent, natural hangover cure,” says Jamie Bacharach, a licensed medical acupuncturist and herbalist who has extensive experience helping patients fight the effects of hangovers and reset their systems following a hangover. 

While there are no studies to back up the benefits of ginger for a hangover, it’s one of the natural cures mentioned time and time again across the internet. And Bacharach says that, “either by eating ginger or drinking ginger tea you can help to reduce feelings of nausea and indigestion, as ginger’s natural properties serve as an effective counter to all hangover-associated symptoms.”

12. Try prickly pear extract.

Bacharach further suggested the use of prickly pear extract. She says this “is a popular hangover cure as some studies have suggested it can reduce the risk and severity of a hangover by as much as 50%.”

She’s referring to the 2004 research conducted by Jeff Wiese, which did find a significant reduction in nausea, dry mouth, and food aversions for those who took prickly pear extract prior to a night of drinking.  

“Prickly pear extract naturally reduces inflammation of the liver, which otherwise directly leads to hangover symptoms such as headache and nausea,” Bacharach explains. 

13. Get some sleep.

“Ultimately, one of the most effective ways to cure a hangover is to sleep it off,” Bacharach says. “When suffering through a hangover, our bodies are in a diminished state, and not up to combating a hangover or its symptoms.”

So if you wake up feeling hungover after a night of drinking, you might want to consider canceling your plans for the day and curling back up into bed—after drinking a big glass of water and enjoying a nice breakfast, of course.

“By giving our bodies the time they need to recover and regroup, we can sleep through the period of discomfort and wake up refreshed and rejuvenated.

14. Abstain.

We know this isn’t what you want to hear if you’re already suffering from a hangover, but addiction medicine board-certified psychiatrist Jared Heathman, MD, says “the best way to manage hangovers is to avoid alcohol.” In fact, the National Health Service (NHS) recommends taking two full days off drinking a week, especially after a heavy drinking session.

“When you consume alcohol, multiple things happen to the body that can affect the way in which you function and feel, especially the next day,” says John Mansour, Pharm.D., founder of B4, a vitamin supplement drink that claims to help reduce the impact of a hangover. “You are introducing toxins into the body that can cause short- and long-term damage.”

These toxins include acetaldehyde and malondialdehyde. “The damage of these toxins on the body can create a similar effect as radiation poisoning, which is why you feel so sick the next day after drinking too much alcohol,” Dr. Mansour explains. 

This lines up with a report out of the UNC School of Medicine, which revealed that there truly is no perfect and scientifically vetted hangover cure. There are some things that may help, but nothing as effectively as avoiding alcohol altogether. 

A night out on the town can be fun, but giving up alcohol completely has a number of positive benefits. And regular drinking has been linked to a variety of health risks. “The most current studies show that drinking one bottle of wine a week gets you the same detrimental health risks of smoking 10 cigarettes a week,” says Dr. Aranda. 

So, if you don’t want to deal with the effects of a hangover, just say “no thank you.” “If this is not possible or realistic, alcohol should be consumed in moderation and not consumed quickly,” Dr. Heathman adds. “Our body has a limited number of enzymes available to metabolize alcohol. Once our body is at full detoxification abilities, additional alcohol will cause a back-up and result in side effects.”

For some, the thought of even moderation may sound impossible. If that’s you, and you fear you may be suffering from alcohol use disorder (AUD) or addiction, there is help available. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has a national helpline you can call for advice and resources, and there are even medications available that can help you quit drinking altogether. 

A Pharmacist’s Guide to OTC Hangover Remedies

The unpleasant feelings from a hangover are generally attributed to a combination of dehydration, toxic impurities found in some alcoholic beverages (congeners), and toxic byproducts of alcohol metabolism.

Ethanol is a diuretic that can suppress the release of antidiuretic hormone from the pituitary gland and result in excess diuresis. This can lead to the characteristic dry mouth, headache, and irritated eyes commonly associated with a hangover.

Congeners are impure fusel alcohols that are often present in “darker” spirits or red wine and can contribute to hangover symptoms following consumption.1 Ethanol is metabolized into the toxic metabolite acetaldehyde, which can cause nausea and malaise. Decreased blood sugar and secondary general inflammation from ethanol consumption may also play a role in hangover symptoms.2

There are numerous OTC remedies that many patients use to prevent or reduce a hangover. This article will focus on 7 select products that are commonly used to self-treat hangovers and detail any evidence that exists to support (or refute) their use.


Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are all nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that are generally effective at relieving headaches and muscle aches. These medications are often taken to combat hangover-related pains. Some claim that NSAIDS can also help counteract some of the pro-inflammatory effects of ethanol and its metabolites.

An NSAID was shown to be more effective than placebo at lowering hangover symptom scores in volunteers who consumed alcohol.3 NSAIDS do have some evidence of efficacy and are commonly used for hangover symptoms, but they could potentially exacerbate gastritis, abdominal pain, and nausea in some individuals.

2. Vitamins

Alcohol-induced diuresis can deplete some water-soluble vitamins from the body. In chronic alcoholics, some vitamins like thiamine and folic acid are often depleted.

It’s unlikely that vitamin supplementation will have any real effect on hangover symptoms following acute alcohol consumption. Currently, there isn’t any strong evidence that vitamin supplements improve acute hangover symptoms.

3. N-acetylcysteine

The amino acid N-acetylcysteine (NAC) can be found in certain protein-rich foods or in capsule form at many health food stores and pharmacies. NAC is thought to boost the production of the antioxidant glutathione and support more efficient alcohol metabolism while reducing oxidative damage to the body. It has been studied as a protective agent, rather than a quick-fix hangover cure.

The results of some animal studies suggest that NAC may decrease ethanol-induced hypertension and acetaldehyde levels in rats.4 Nevertheless, there’s little evidence to support NAC’s efficacy as a hangover treatment in human subjects.

4. Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is an herbal supplement that is commonly marketed as a hepatoprotective substance. It has been studied and used off-label as a hepatoprotectant in certain cases of mushroom poisoning and hepatitis with some possible benefit.5

While there’s some evidence of milk thistle’s benefit in chronic ethanol abusers, no data supports its use as a treatment for an acute ethanol-induced hangover.6

5. Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant that many use to combat the lethargy and headaches associated with hangovers. Caffeine was shown to reduce headaches associated with alcohol consumption in rats, but human studies weren’t performed.7

Although anecdotal evidence for using caffeine to combat hangover symptoms abounds, there’s little scientific evidence that conclusively shows its benefit.2

6. Dihydromyricetin

This “natural” herbal product is being marketed as a hangover cure. The results of some small studies demonstrate some anti-inflammatory effects of dihydromyricetin in rats.8 While preliminary studies report some interesting conclusions in animal models, there’s little evidence to support the benefits of its use in humans.

Like most other herbal remedies, there isn’t enough meaningful evidence to recommend dihydromyricetin to treat anything, including a hangover.

7. Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal marketed to treat or prevent hangovers is generally contained in capsules and taken by mouth before consuming alcoholic beverages. Manufactures claim that the activated charcoal in the capsules will absorb the hangover-causing congeners found in many alcoholic beverages, but there’s no definitive evidence showing it does anything to prevent the severity and/or duration of hangovers.

While in vitro studies suggest activated charcoal has the ability to absorb congeners, there’s scant evidence demonstrating its effectiveness in vivo.9 It’s unlikely that the relatively small amounts of activated charcoal are effective at reducing the impurities found in various beverages. Moreover, there’s currently no conclusive evidence that says otherwise.

There is 1 product marketed specifically as a hangover treatment that contains FDA-regulated ingredients. It’s a combination of a large dose of aspirin and caffeine with the intent to treat hangover symptoms. While anti-inflammatory agents and stimulants such as caffeine may reduce the severity of some hangover symptoms, there’s little prospective clinical evidence to accurately gauge efficacy.

The remedies presented above may provide hangover relief for some, but it’s important to stress to patients that the only way to completely prevent a hangover is to abstain from alcohol consumption. If the patient chooses to consume alcohol, however, drinking in moderation with adequate hydration is likely a better way to avoid hangovers than OTC drugs or herbal supplements.

Splitting headaches, sickness, dizziness, dehydration: anyone who’s ever drunk too much knows the consequences.

Alcohol makes you pee more, which can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is what causes many of the symptoms of a hangover.

Hangover cures are generally a myth. There are no cures for a hangover, but there are things you can do to avoid one and, if you do have one, ease the discomfort.

Tips to avoid a hangover

To avoid a hangover:

  • Do not drink more than you know your body can cope with. If you’re not sure how much that is, be careful.
  • Do not drink on an empty stomach. Before you start drinking, have a meal that includes carbohydrates (such as pasta or rice) or fats. The food will help to slow down your body’s absorption of alcohol.
  • Do not drink dark coloured drinks if you’ve found you’re sensitive to them. They contain natural chemicals called congeners, which irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain and can make a hangover worse.
  • Drink water or non-fizzy soft drinks in between each alcoholic drink. Fizzy drinks speed up the absorption of alcohol into your body.
  • Drink a pint or so of water before you go to sleep. Keep a glass of water by your bed to sip if you wake up during the night.

Hangover treatment

Dealing with a hangover involves rehydrating your body to help you deal with the painful symptoms. The best time to rehydrate is before going to sleep after a drinking session.

Painkillers can help with headaches and muscle cramps.

Sugary foods may help you feel less trembly. In some cases, an antacid may be needed to settle your stomach first.

Bouillon soup (a thin, vegetable-based broth) is a good source of vitamins and minerals, which can top-up depleted resources. It’s also easy for a fragile stomach to digest.

You can replace lost fluids by drinking bland liquids that are gentle on your digestive system, such as water, soda water and isotonic drinks.

Things to avoid

Drinking more alcohol, or “hair of the dog”, does not help. Drinking in the morning is a risky habit, and you may simply be delaying the appearance of symptoms until the extra alcohol wears off.

If you’ve been drinking heavily, doctors advise that you wait at least 48 hours before drinking any more alcohol (even if you don’t have a hangover), to give your body time to recover.

Sometimes, of course, a hangover makes this advice easier to follow.

Advice for regular drinkers

To keep the health risks from alcohol to a low level, if you drink most weeks:

  • do not drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis
  • spread your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week
  • if you want to cut down, try to have several alcohol-free days each week

14 units is equivalent to 6 pints of average-strength beer or 10 small glasses of low-strength wine.

A hangover can last up to 72 hours after drinking, but in most cases this period is shorter. Much depends on how much was drunk, how much the body is dehydrated. Individual factors are also important: lifestyle, nutrition, gender and weight, liver condition, stomach health and medications taken that can aggravate the condition [3].

1. Deep sleep

At times, getting enough rest and sleep is enough to give the body time and strength to return to normal functioning. Although alcohol consumption often impairs the quality of sleep, it becomes intermittent and shallow [5].Prolonged lack of proper rest aggravates hangover symptoms. Therefore, do not plan to get up early if you have drunk too much. Try to set aside time for rest and sleep as soon as the opportunity presents itself. This will avoid the headaches, fatigue, and irritability that accompany a hangover.

2. Healthy breakfast

Morning meal is the most important of the day. A balanced breakfast will energize and relieve hangovers by maintaining blood sugar levels, fatigue and nausea.Some studies also show that maintaining adequate blood sugar levels can alleviate alcohol-related symptoms by lowering acidity in the body. Narcologist Nikolai Nazariev says: “It is too late to use activated charcoal for a hangover. A hangover is a poisoning with metabolic products when the substances have already been absorbed.Drinking coal in advance also makes no sense: the ethanol molecule is very small, it will make its way everywhere. ” However, sorbents are useful if you suspect that you have food poisoning in addition to a hangover.

6. Painkillers and other medicines

If your head hurts badly, there is no point in enduring – take a pill. Although common drugstore ibuprofen-based remedies have a negative effect on the liver and gastrointestinal tract, at least you can collect your thoughts and not spend all day in bed.Choose the drugs you know and are prescribed by your therapist, because new drugs can give the body an unpredictable response and worsen the condition.
