Are oils actually good for your face?

Simply put, yes! A natural face oil is absolutely good for your face. Whether it be from the use of even the most gentle of cleansers or just exposure to environmental elements, you will want to replenish the oil that is naturally in your skin.

A facial oil is EXACTLY what it sounds like. It is an oil based skincare product that is designed to be used on your face.

You want an oil to have a blend of essential fatty acids (EFA’s) or omegas. Our bodies don’t produce EFA’s on their own so we need to supplement them internally and externally. Oils also can contain a mix of essential oils that help to balance the skin and provide therapeutic properties. Oils work perfectly with our skin’s cutaneous and get to the center of the epidermis.

Benefits of Using A Facial Oil

There are many benefits that can be achieved when using a facial oil, it really just depends on what oil you choose, what other active ingredients are in the products and if you are consistent in using it. This study looked at the potential benefits of topically applying a variety of plant oils. They were able to conclude that these oils could do the following:

  • Strengthen the skin barrier
  • Antioxidant Properties
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties
  • Anti-Microbial Properties
  • Promotion of Wound Healing

Personally I have noted a variety of changes to my skin with consistent use of a face oil. Like I said, different oil products will have different results for your skin. So depending on where you are looking for improvements in your skin that may guide which type of oil you want to use.

Most Popular Oils Used for Skincare

Here is a closer look at some of the best oils used in skincare products.

Squalane Oil

A more stable version of squalene oil, which is found naturally in our body but we produce less of it as we age. When applied topically squalane has been shown to be critical in reducing damage caused by free radicals. This damage includes things like fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots to name a few.

Jojoba Oil

This oil is a liquid that comes from the jojoba plant. Historically it has been known to have been used to treat a wide variety of ailments (anything from skin issues, to improvements in liver function or even improved immune function)and studies show it to be an antioxidant, anti-acne and antipsoriasis, anti-inflammatory and antifungal. This makes it a great oil to be used in skincare products.

Rosehip Oil (also called Rosehip Seed Oil)

This oil comes from the fruit of the wild rose bush. It has high levels of fatty acids and antioxidants making it protective against inflammation and oxidative stress.

Chia Seed Oil

Coming from the chia seed, chia oil is heralded for its fast absorbing ability, but also for its antioxidants, minerals, and omega’s. It has even been found to have the highest level of antioxidants ever measured by the Nutritional Science Research Institute – talk about a treat for your skin!

Marula Oil

Coming from the marula fruit that is found in Africa, marula oil has been used for centuries as a way to protect hair and skin against the harsh sun and environment. Beyond being packed full of antioxidants and fatty acids, this oil has been shown to inhibit the enzymes that break down elastin – a major anti-aging benefit!

Blue Tansy Oil

This is definitely the prettiest and most distinct looking oil – coming in a beautiful blue color along with a slightly sweet scent. But beyond that, it is packed with the antioxidant Chamazulene. While this is what is responsible for the blue color, it is also what helps it to calm inflamed and irritated skin along with fighting free radical damage.

Meadowfoam Seed Oil

This oil is packed full of Vitamin E and fatty acids (specifically eicosenoic), meaning not only will it help fight off free radical damage but also has the potential to reduce UV induced skin damage. This study confirmed the antioxidant and anti-aging properties and this study confirmed there are two compounds in this oil that will protect your skin against UV damage.

Prickly Pear Oil

This oil comes from the seed of the prickly pear. It has been shown to have antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

Apricot Oil

This oil has been shown to have anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties

Plum Oil

A lightweight oil that is full of skin loving vitamins and fatty acids and has a very slight sweet smell to it. Even better, its full of antioxidants that help fight free radical damage. It’s also rich in Vitamins A and E which will support healing and hydration.

Pomegranate Seed Oil

Full of fatty acids as well as a high concentration of polyphenolic compounds, the pomegranate seed oil is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Baobab Oil

Coming from the baobab tree in Africa, this oil has been known to be used for many purposes inlcuding food, medicinal or skincare. As far as skincare benefits, the anti inflammatory fatty acids presents may help with irritation, redness and even acne. All this while improving the skin’s barrier and helping to lock in hydration.

This oil really takes the cake when it comes to a face oil for many reasons. First, I love how it only has one ingredient. Just one! This keeps things so clean and pure. They step it up a notch and the plum oil is organic too! It is a rich feeling oil and moisturizes the skin so well. There is no greasy residue and it is so lightweight. It also absorbs nicely into the skin.  It packs a punch as far as effective facial oils when it comes to working at minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They have before and after photos on their website that really speak to the effectiveness of the product. It smells like a poppy seed muffin- need I say more?! I really can’t stop using this- SO good.

This is a very active facial oil. I love that it not only moisturizes with chia oil and buriti but also delivers some serious benefits when it comes to helping target mature skin.  Since it not only contains retinol, but also Vitamins C & E, it really works well to not only target fine lines and wrinkles but also brighten skin overall. After using this for 2 months I noticed my hyperpigmentation faded and my skin looked visibly brighter and smoother. It was a completely new youthful look overall. If you’re looking for an oil that delivers on the aging gracefully front, this is it!

Review

This was the first face oil I used years and years ago that I really fell hard for! I remember using it consistently for just 2 weeks and was amazed at the difference I already saw in my skin.  My skin was more even and there was this one hyperpigmentation spot that I already could see was less noticeable. I had a glow to my skin and it was more smooth. I love how this oil melts right into your skin and doesn’t leave behind an oily residue at all. Just plump, balanced skin. I love the slight pinkish hue to the oil. I call it my first love when it comes to a facial oil because it’s what started my love of facial oils!

Maya Super Naked Plum + Chia Face Oil

Best for: Sensitive skin, dry skin.

This product is a combination of 3 ingredients: Organic Chia oil, Organic Virgin Plum oil and Astaxanthin. Making this a simple yet powerful product!

Review

This is Maya Chia’s newest product. It really is another star product in their skincare lineup. You might be thinking what’s the difference. Allow me to explain. The Maya Chia Plum + Chia oil only contains 3 ingredients as opposed to their other facial oils.  It also doesn’t have any essential oils in it either. They paired their star ingredient chia oil with plum oil and then infused super antioxidant astaxanthin to it to help combat free radicals. Astaxanthin is 65x stronger than Vitamin C. This oil absorbs quickly and is lightweight. It feels so nourishing on the skin and doesn’t feel heavy. I love how simple the ingredients are, yet powerful. As you read earlier, plum and chia oil alone are both star skin ingredients used to help fight signs of aging and help to add a brightness to the skin. My skin felt so supple and hydrated after using.

Combining blue tansy, jojoba oil, squalane and jasmine sambac oil this product helps reduce the appearance of acne and improve skin tone while also keeping moisture in the skin.

Review

This oil contains two of my favorite skincare ingredients- squalane oil and blue tansy. These two together make a great team. I love the soothing properties of blue tansy and smell. My skin felt out of balance over a year ago from just using too many products.  My skin barrier was compromised and squalane and blue tansy were two ingredients that my skin could tolerate. They really brought life back to my skin and balance. This moisturizes well, but it’s not greasy, especially for oily skin types. Can’t recommend enough if you’re wanting a non-comedogenic oil that won’t clog pores but is also soothing.

Natural Facial Oils FAQ’s

Can you use face oils on oily skin?

Many people with oily skin think they should avoid oils- when really the opposite is true. Using the right oil will help bring balance to the skin and won’t clog pores like other moisturizers that contain emulsifiers, waxes, etc.

Do face oils cause acne?

It really depends on the oil type when wondering if face oils cause acne.  Oils can fall into two categories, comedogenic and non-comedogenic.  Comedogenic ingredients are ingredients that can clog pores, cause blackheads and ultimately worsen acne, perioral dermatitis or trigger it.  I would avoid these oils if you have acne.  However, there are oils that are non-comedogenic or are closer to being non-comedogenic and are a better option for acne skin.   Some of my favorite non-comedogenic oils are squalene, rosehip oil, prickly pear seed oil, pomegranate oil and meadowfoam seed oil. The best way to see if you react to oils with acne skin is to patch test an area first.

Do facial oils actually moisturize the skin?

Face oils add no hydration to the skin, however they do add nourishment and help to retain the moisture that is already present by sealing in the moisture.  Similar to plastic wrap for the skin.

Do I need a moisturizer if I use a face oil?

Ultimately it depends on your skin type if you want to use a moisturizer and a face oil. My skin is dry, so I really like using a face moisturizer first to moisturize my skin and a face oil as the last step in my skincare routine to help seal in the moisture. I especially like to do this in the winter. But, if you have a more oily skin type, for example, you may find no need for it.

How do you apply face oils?

The best way to apply a face oil is to take just a couple drops and, using your fingers, press the oil into your skin. You won’t want to rub an oil in like you would other products. The pressing is what allows your skin to really absorb the product.  You want to apply an oil after a moisturizer if you’re using one since it helps to seal the moisture in.

When in my skincare routine should I apply a face oil?

The order I recommend for applying skincare products is as follows:

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Serum
  • Lotion/Cream
  • Eye Serum
  • Oil

Not everyone will need or want to use all of these products, but this is the order to apply the products for best results.

Best Natural Face Oil for Oily Skin

Herbivore – Lapis Facial Oil

Price: $72

Review: 4.8/5

Facial oil for oily skin? Trust us on this one.

Despite popular belief, oily skin types require moisture. Yet those with this skin type often steer clear of moisturizers and face oils for fear of clogging pores.

Now, what people don’t realize is when we deprive the skin of moisture, regardless of your skin type, it then overcompensates by producing even more sebum, which can clog pores and cause breakouts to form. We know—this is groundbreaking stuff!

Once you can wrap your head around this paradigm shift, allow us to introduce you to the solution.

This ethereal, deep blue oil from Herbivore Botanicals is beloved among oily and combination skin types for its ability to provide just the perfect amount of hydration without clogging pores.

A blend of non-comedogenic ingredients, including soothing blue tansy, nourishing kukui nut oil, and sebum-like jojoba and squalane oils, helps keep dehydration at bay and balances out oil-slick complexions for flareup free hydration.

12 Best Facial Oils

Facial oil is one of the most sought after beauty products. The fact is that these products can be used for many different purposes related to the individual characteristics of the skin and the desired end result. Oils can be used in conjunction with other face care methods, as well as as an independent product.

The advantage of cosmetic oils lies in the way they are produced. The fact is that most of these products are made by cold pressing natural ingredients. Thanks to this, almost all the beneficial properties of natural components are preserved, which will subsequently take care of the skin of your face. Oils are especially in demand during the cold season, when even the most healthy and elastic skin begins to experience irritation after being in the cold.

Another undoubted advantage of using cosmetic oil is the ability to combine the process of its application with various massage techniques that allow you to relieve tension and tighten the skin.

In this rating, we will consider the 12 most high-quality and effective cosmetic oils for facial skin, which contain selected natural ingredients. After reading the review, you can easily choose the option that suits your needs.

Main selection parameters:

  • Skin type
  • Composition
  • Effect
  • Use

Skin type

90 002

In pursuit of a famous brand, flattering reviews from friends or an attractive price, do not forget to look back at the most important criterion for choosing an oil – this is your skin type. With the wrong approach, even the most effective remedy will not bring you closer to the desired result.

  • For those with dry skin, professional cosmetologists advise choosing products with added fatty acids and vitamin E, which strengthen the epidermal barrier and prevent excessive moisture loss. Such skin care products include, for example, avocado oil, which is a leader in the quality of skin moisturizing.

The oil, which contains macadamia nut, is excellent for dry skin with acne. Also included in this category is wheat germ oil.

  • For oily skin types, choose oils that are light in texture and do not clog pores. They may contain salicylic acid, retinoids, as well as omega-6, which together reduce the production of sebum, have an antibacterial and antioxidant effect. In this category, you should pay attention to grape seed oil, which helps restore the water-lipid balance and prevents the appearance of oily sheen on the surface of the skin. The oil, which contains hazelnut, is suitable for sensitive skin, as it soothes inflammation. This also includes skin care products with the addition of Japanese camellia, hemp and jojoba oil.
  • There are also universal options for normal and combination skin. Almond oil, which also has an ultraviolet protection effect, coconut oil with a bactericidal effect, and sea buckthorn oil, which has a healing effect on various dermatological problems, act as such agents.

Composition

As mentioned above, in the manufacture of care oils, most of the beneficial natural ingredients are preserved and further benefit the cells of the skin of the face. Before purchasing, we advise you to check the composition of cosmetics for the presence of parabens, silicones, sulfates and other not very useful substances. This is especially important for owners of sensitive skin prone to irritation and allergic reactions.

Vegetable oils for the face are divided into base and essential:

  1. The first option is more familiar to use. The main task of such products is to create a protective film on the skin, which will maintain the water balance of the cells. Liquid base products are lighter in texture, while solid base products are denser.
  2. If we talk about essential oils, then they contain a high concentration of useful substances, due to which such products are most often used as an integral component. Their effect on the epidermis is wider than that of base oils. With the help of essential products, the fair sex eliminates age-related skin changes, and when using such oils, blood circulation processes improve.

Effect

According to the final result, there are also conditional divisions, but, of course, cosmetic oils have a complex effect on the skin.

Moisturizing products nourish thin and sensitive skin, eliminate peeling and wrinkles.

Nourishing products rich in peptides and hyaluronic acid that plump up the skin. Caffeine in the composition has a tonic effect and relieves puffiness.

Anti-aging oils also stand out separately. These products include argan oil, which cares for mature skin, apricot oil is able to regenerate epidermal cells, enriching them with essential nutrients and vitamins. Borage oil improves the elasticity of the skin.

In the event that you choose the right care for painful skin (it can be eczema, psoriasis, etc.), we recommend that you look at oils with the addition of soy, baobab, kiwi and blackcurrant.

Use

After the initial test of a cosmetic product for an allergic reaction, experienced cosmetologists recommend not to hurry with a thorough application of oil to the entire surface of the skin of the face. Start with a few drops a few times a week to make sure the product you are using is safe. If your skin has accepted the new stage of care without any problems, then you can use it as the final component of complex care (but always before applying SPF protection).

TOP best face oils for 2023.

This material is not an advertisement, it is for informational purposes and reflects the author’s evaluative opinion. All ranking positions are selected based on the developed selection criteria. Before making a purchase, you need to consult a specialist.

Facial skin care is an everyday ritual that requires a thoughtful selection of cosmetics. In recent years, cosmetologists around the world have been insisting on introducing oils into their daily personal care system.

Oil-based formulations are a source of trace elements, disinfectants and moisturizing ingredients, and vegetable fats. On the market are: natural (without the addition of preservatives and other chemical components), cosmetic (with the addition of moisturizing, exfoliating components in the composition) and essential.

Cold-pressed oils are considered to be completely natural and harmless to the body. When choosing an organic face product, it’s best to start with mini-sized packs of 5-10 ml. The natural component can provoke an allergic reaction or individual intolerance. Test the oils on a small area of your hand to see if the care properties are suitable or not.

Oils obtained by hydrodistillation of natural raw materials are called essential oils. They are often added as an ingredient in luxury cosmetics. In its pure form, they can provoke allergies and superficial burns. We recommend adding a few drops of essential concentrate to lotion, hand cream or serum.

Dry, oily, dehydrated, aging skin requires an individual and correct selection of cosmetics. If you decide to introduce natural ingredients as a step in your care, consult a dermatologist and carefully study the ingredients of the selected cosmetic jars. Save this material to your bookmarks, because we have compiled a rating of the best cosmetic facial oils for 2023.

If you dream of healthy and beautiful skin, choose cosmetic oil

Facial oils are not the most popular beauty product. Many believe that washing, wiping the face with tonic, making masks is enough to slow down the aging process of the epidermis. This is wrong. Modern cosmetology and the beauty industry does not stand still, the compositions of products are so complex that they can solve several problems at once and even treat acne. Nutrition, hydration, protection, healing – not a complete list of useful functions.

      Let’s talk about the benefits:

      1. Organic and cosmetic fats can be used at any time of the year. In winter, add a drop to hand cream, lip balm. In summer, apply a thin layer of oil before going to bed, enjoy the result in the morning.
      2. Regular use of cosmetics with an oily base stimulates the production of your own collagen. As a result, the elasticity of the skin is restored.
      3. Cosmetics with a high oil content protects the skin from drying out, exposure to aggressive environments, city dust, cold winds.
      4. Daily application of oil formulations will help in the fight against acne and dermatitis, will have an antibacterial and healing effect.
      5. Fatty acids help cleanse pores, normalize sebum production, and have an exfoliating effect.

We select organic oil according to skin type

Combination or normal skin is not prone to rashes, redness, peeling. Combination, more oily in the T-zone than normal. Owners of oily skin, exclude cosmetic products with heavy, comedogenic fats. From natural give preference: argan oil, almond, jojoba, grape seed, rosehip, shea butter, olive oil.

Dry skin of the face is often itchy, flaky, prone to redness. Organic fats will help get rid of discomfort, a feeling of tightness, and restore hydrobalance. The best in the fight against dryness and peeling are: cocoa, shea, olive, hazelnut and argan oils. Stock up on jars of macadamia or arctic berry oils for winter. They protect against wind and frost. You can add a few drops to hand and eye creams.

Oily skin is characterized by excess sebum. As a result, sebum clogs pores, comedones and blackheads form. Oily skin types have enlarged pores in the T-zone. Cosmetic oil will help fight oily sheen, improve appearance and reduce sebum production. Fatty acids dissolve excess fat, dirt in the pores. Regular use of oil normalizes the condition of the epidermis, improves the appearance. The only rule is not to overdo it. Apply a thin layer, remove excess with a tissue. The secretion of sebum is regulated by oils of moringa, jojoba, hemp seeds.

Skin prone to acne and breakouts needs special care with antibacterial agents. For the treatment and maintenance of a normal condition, the use of neem and black cumin oils, watermelon pits is recommended. Before use, it is better to test on a small area to exclude allergic reactions.

Sensitive skin also needs an individual selection of care products. We recommend buying natural oil in mini formats and testing it on small areas to avoid irritation and redness. For sensitive skin, use argan, avocado, shea and jojoba oils.

We talked about natural oils, now let’s look at the best cosmetic products. Bookmark your rating so you can quickly find useful information when choosing a remedy.

The rating was compiled on the basis of numerous reviews of cosmetic products. Selected cosmetic oils from different price segments, luxury, premium, mass market.
