What is Chlorella Blue-Green Algae Powder?

Chlorella (Chlorella Vulgaris) is a type of single-celled, freshwater algae that dates back to the Precambrian period. Its rich green color is due to its high levels of chlorophyll, and its cells are equivalent in size to human blood cells. The name “Chlorella” comes from the Greek word “chloros,” meaning green, and the Latin word “ella,” meaning small.

Chlorella was first discovered by scientists in 1890, but its nutritional properties weren’t fully understood until the 1990s. However, research on the Chlorella genus of algae for its nutritive properties has been ongoing since the 1940s. Chlorella gained prominence as a potential solution to global food shortages and protein deficiencies in the years following World War II, although interest waned as advancements in agriculture and crop efficiency resolved these issues.

Even so, chlorella remains a valuable non-meat option for protein and other essential nutrients. The Chlorella Vulgaris species, in particular, is a bioavailable source of vitamin B12, iron, and protein.

What Makes Chlorella Algae Powder so Popular?

Like spirulina, chlorella is a single-celled, primitive organism. Chlorella vulgaris is one of the more popular species for producing supplements because it can survive in unfavorable conditions and resist foreign invaders.

Chlorella has developed an outer, fibrous shell that serves two key functions: it protects the delicate, nutrient-rich inner cytoplasm, and it helps the alga absorb and retain minerals and other nutrients from its surrounding environment. This ability to efficiently capture and hold onto valuable nutrients is what makes chlorella a valuable supplement.

What Does “Broken Cell” Mean?

Each chlorella microorganism contains a nucleus, starch grains, chloroplasts, and mitochondria, all surrounded by a cellulose-based cell wall. This outer shell is indigestible, which is why “broken cell wall” chlorella is preferred.

High-pressure nozzles are used to break through the outer shell, exposing the nutrient-rich cytoplasm inside. This process also increases the surface area of the fibrous outer shell, enhancing the overall digestibility of the chlorella.

Potential Chlorella Benefits

Vegan Complete Protein

Chlorella is considered a complete protein, as it contains all nine essential amino acids, as well as several non-essential amino acids.

Rich in Nutrients

Chlorella is a rich source of various vitamins and minerals, including chlorophyll, vitamin A, vitamin B12, iodine, vitamin K1, and iron. It also contains small amounts of other important nutrients like riboflavin, manganese, vitamin C, biotin, vitamin B6, thiamin, phosphorus, vitamin E, magnesium, pantothenic acid, potassium, and zinc.

Binds to Heavy Metals

Chlorella may enhance the body’s ability to clear toxins, as it can absorb significant levels of heavy metals from its surrounding environment. It may act as a detoxifying sponge as it passes through the digestive tract, and it can also help reduce the toxicity of heavy metals and other damaging food chemicals.

Immune System Enhancer

Animal and human studies have shown that chlorella can boost the body’s natural immune response, potentially improving overall immunity. One study found that men taking chlorella produced more antibodies than those taking a placebo, while another study noted an increase in immune function among participants.

How to Incorporate Chlorella into Your Diet

Chlorella supplements are widely available in powder, tablet, or capsule form. The broken cell wall variety is generally considered more bioavailable and digestible than whole-cell chlorella.

When incorporating chlorella into your diet, start with a small amount, such as 1-2 grams per day, and gradually increase the dosage as needed. Chlorella can be added to smoothies, juices, or mixed into other foods and beverages.

As with any supplement, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions or are taking medications.

Conclusion

Broken cell chlorella is a nutrient-rich superfood with a wide range of potential benefits, from providing a complete vegan protein to supporting detoxification and immune function. By understanding the unique properties of this ancient algae, you can unlock its power and incorporate it into a healthy, balanced diet.

Green Algae Powder – Chlorella – Health Supplements

Product Details

What is Chlorella Blue-Green Algae Powder?

Chlorella (Chlorella Vulgaris) algae are one of the oldest foods on the planet and date back to the Precambrian period. Chlorella algae is a fine blue-green color due to its high levels of chlorophyll. Its cells are also quite small, equivalent to that of a human blood cell. The name Chlorella reflects these features, as it comes from the Greek word chloros, meaning green, and the Latin word ella, meaning small.

Scientists discovered the unicellular freshwater alga in 1890, but they didn’t uncover its nutritional properties until the 1990s. However, scientists have researched the Chlorella genus of algae for its nutritive properties since the 1940s. Populations around the world boomed following World War II, and the agriculture industry couldn’t keep pace with the demand. Even if countries expanded their farmlands, many would still fall significantly short of their populous’ needs. Countries experienced protein shortages as well, as cultivating livestock was an expensive process.

Chlorella algae rose to prominence as a potential solution to these issues, as it is rich in protein, fats, and vitamins. However, interest in Chlorella waned due to advances in agriculture and crop efficiency resolving the world food shortages. Even so, it remains a non-meat option for protein and many other nutrients. The Chlorella Vulgaris species is a bioavailable source of vitamin B12, iron, and protein.

What Makes Chlorella Algae Powder so Popular?

Like Spirulina Algae, chlorella alga is a single-celled primitive organism. Chlorella vulgaris is one of the more popular Chlorella species for producing supplements, as it can survive in unfavorable conditions and resist foreign invaders. Chlorella learned how to adapt to fresh water and survive the occasional drying of ponds. It developed an outer fibrous shell surrounding a delicate, nutrient-rich inner cytoplasm.

This fibrous shell has two major functions. The first is that it protects inner cellular membranes until the alga is completely desiccated. Yet chlorella has a more important trick to beat the competition: the outer fibrous shell grabs and holds nutrients from the water before the pond completely dries. By doing so, chlorella can survive and flourish once the pond refills. It is this affinity for absorbing and retaining minerals and other nutrients within chlorella’s outer shell that makes it a valuable supplement.

What Does “Broken Cell” Mean?

Each chlorella microorganism contains a nucleus, starch grains, chloroplasts, and mitochondria surrounded by a cell wall made primarily of cellulose. The outer shell is indigestible. PureBulk Chlorella is referred to as “broken cell wall algae.” High-pressure nozzles break through the outer shell to expose the nutrient-rich cytoplasm inside. It also exposes more of the fibrous outer shell surface area, enhancing the digestibility of this single-celled, nutritionally packed microalgae.

Potential Chlorella Benefits

Vegan Complete Protein

Chlorella is a complete protein, as it contains all nine essential amino acids: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. It also contains several non-essential amino acids: alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, serine, and tyrosine.

Rich in Several Nutrients

It’s rich in vitamins and minerals, including chlorophyll, vitamin A, vitamin B12, iodine, vitamin K1, and Iron. Chlorella contains small amounts of several other important nutrients: riboflavin (vitamin B2), manganese, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), biotin (vitamin B7), vitamin B6, thiamin (vitamin B1), phosphorus, vitamin E, magnesium, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), potassium, and zinc. Like other algae, chlorella is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains numerous antioxidants.

Binds to Heavy Metals

Chlorella may enhance how the body clears toxins from the body. It absorbs significant levels of heavy metals from its surrounding environment, and it may act as a detoxifying sponge as it passes through the digestive tract. It’s also able to weaken the toxicity of heavy metals and reduce levels of other damaging food chemicals.

Immune System Enhancer

Animal and human studies have shown that chlorella boosts the body’s natural immune response, which may improve overall immunity. One study noted that men taking chlorella produced more antibodies than those taking a placebo. Another study noted that chlorella increased participants’ immune activity.

Antioxidant Activity

Chlorella is rich in antioxidants that help fight free radicals and oxidative stress. Over time free radical damage can lead to, contribute to, or worsen many chronic illnesses. Some of its more notable antioxidants include beta-carotene, chlorophyll, vitamin C, lutein, and lycopene. One study noted that chlorella exerts bioprotective effects in young individuals and bioremediation in older participants. It also boosts antioxidant levels in individuals with an increased risk of oxidative damage. It may convey neuroprotective effects by reducing inflammation in the brain.

Chlorella: A Complete Vegetarian Protein

Vegetarians and vegans have to consume a mix of plant-based proteins, as many plant foods lack certain amino acids. Chlorella has all nine essential amino acids and is a high-protein food.

Enhances Endurance

Preliminary research shows chlorella may improve aerobic endurance. Participants taking chlorella supplements showed improved oxygen saturation in their lungs after four weeks, whereas the placebo group experienced no improvements. Researchers hypothesized that this is due to chlorella’s branched-chain amino acid content, isoleucine, leucine, and valine. Multiple studies have shown that BCAAs are effective aerobic endurance enhancers. Chlorella is also a good protein source, which is essential for muscle growth, development, and endurance.

Are There Nutritional Differences Between Chlorella Algae and Spirulina Algae?

Chlorella has higher levels of provitamin A, iron, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and zinc when compared to spirulina.>a Spirulina has fewer calories per serving and has more copper and thiamine (vitamin B1) than chlorella. While lower than chlorella, spirulina has notable levels of vitamin B2 and iron. Both are rich in antioxidants and nutrients. However, chlorella has a slight nutritional advantage, whereas spirulina has a marginally higher protein content.

Does Chlorella Powder Taste a lot Like Spirulina Powder?

Spirulina has a slight fishy or ocean taste because manufacturers typically cultivate it in salt or brackish water. Chlorella is a freshwater alga and is very “green” tasting owing to its high chlorophyll content, like barley green powder or wheat grass juice powder. For most people, the aroma and taste of chlorella algae powder are neither unpleasant nor objectionable. If you prefer, PureBulk offers vegetarian and gelatin capsules.

Potential Side Effects of Chlorella Blue-Green Algae

Most individuals can take chlorella supplements without experiencing adverse effects. Some individuals may experience an upset stomach or nausea. Individuals may notice a harmless green coloration of their bowel movements due to chlorella’s chlorophyll content. Excess doses can cause diarrhea. Individuals with autoimmune conditions shouldn’t take chlorella powder without consulting their physician first, as it can affect the immune system. Chlorella may interact with some blood thinners as well. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to chlorella, particularly those with an iodine allergy. Always speak with a doctor before starting any new supplements.

Bioavailability, Mixing, and Solubility of Chlorella Blue-Green Algae

Chlorella blue-green algae powder mixes well with water or juice. Strong-flavored vegetable or citrus juices mask any taste chlorella may have.

Purity and Concentration of Chlorella Blue-Green Algae

PureBulk’s Chlorella Vulgaris blue-green algae contain no additives, fillers, or anti-caking agents.

Pulverized vs Broken Cell Wall Chlorella: Why Pulverized is Better

Estimated Reading Time: 4 Minutes

Updated April 16, 2020

Chlorella is a single-celled, freshwater green algae often referred to as The King of Superfoods. This superfood is considered to have greater potential benefits than the popular protein powerhouse, spirulina.

Chlorella Benefits

Chlorella is rich in chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for plants’ green color. In one serving of chlorella, there is about as much chlorophyll as in 2 to 2.5 cups of spinach or kale. It’s also a good plant-based source of vitamin B12, making it a wonderful health food for vegans and vegetarians.

Other chlorella benefits include:

We’ve barely scratched the surface of how chlorella can support our health. It has so much more to offer, including nutrients such as beta-carotene and different amino acids. You can discover what else chlorella can do for you here.

Here at Sun Chlorella, we only use a specific strain of chlorella, chlorella pyrenoidosa. It contains high levels of CGF, which supports tissue renewal and immune health*.

After learning the health benefits of chlorella, you should know that not all chlorella supplements are created equal. The cultivation and processing have a significant impact on its health benefits.

Chlorella Preparation Methods

Chlorella contains excellent nutrients within its tough cell wall. By breaking through this hard barrier, chlorella’s potential can be fully realized.

There are three methods of preparation: fermentation, cracking/breaking, and pulverization. Let’s examine these more closely:

Fermented

Fermented chlorella is grown in a sealed, sterilized, fermentation tank without sunlight. This method of chlorella preparation is not commonly performed because it’s not the most practical solution. Chlorella fermentation inhibits CGF production, which takes place during photosynthesis. This method produces nutrients from acetic acid and glucose rather than the sun, which isn’t nearly as natural or effective.

The greatest fermented chlorella benefits is that it can kill any bacteria that may be growing there. The tradeoff is that the heat (120º) can kill the remaining nutrients in fermented chlorella. As a result, you only get a small amount of nutritional value.

Cracked or Broken

Fermenting chlorella softens the cell wall, but doing so doesn’t unleash the abundance of minerals and vitamins inside. The main difference between fermented chlorella vs broken cell wall chlorella is that the latter penetrates the cell wall. Therefore, broken cell wall chlorella benefits outweigh the first method.

Some companies crack the cell wall of chlorella through sound vibrations. While this is a better process than fermenting chlorella, the benefits of broken cell wall chlorella is still limited. There’s a far better way to access the chlorella cell’s remarkable nutritional content.

Pulverized

Pulverized chlorella  cell wall gives you access to chlorella’s full nutritional profile. The process involves eliminating most of the cell wall. It’s similar to milling wheat, which leaves all the nutrients available at peak levels for maximum absorption. At Sun Chlorella, we pulverize the cell wall using DYNO®-Mill. It’s a high-energy grinding mill designed to break the cell wall down into small pieces.

We spray-dry our chlorella with hot air to avoid damage to its quality and nutrients. We test our product before and after the spray to ensure the quality and purity remain the same.

Sun Chlorella’s pulverized chlorella comes in tablets or powder form.

Why Choose Sun Chlorella?

Sun Chlorella has been providing the best chlorella supplements to the market since 1969. Our mission is to bring the life-affirming, nutrient-rich benefits of chlorella to the world. We always ensure you receive the most nutrients from our chlorella products.

Manufacturing Process

Organic Chlorella Powder – Algae Farming

Chlorella algae is grown away from the bustle of the city by growers in sunny China’s Fujian Province. It does not contain pesticides, herbicides or other toxins. The water in the growing tank comes from the depths of the earth and is carefully filtered before being used for growing algae.

Organic Chlorella Powder – Harvest

Chlorella algae thrive in cultivation tanks. The crop is harvested as soon as the degree of OD (optical density) meets the standard. The first harvest of chlorella occurs after one to two months, after which it can be harvested at intervals of seven to ten days.

Organic Chlorella Powder – Spray Drying

The wet mass of chlorella is spray dried under constant control of initial and final temperature. In this process, drops of chlorella are sprayed into a kind of chamber, as a result of which the water contained in them evaporates instantly. This method of our manufacturers allows us to almost completely preserve the valuable nutrients of chlorella algae.

Organic Chlorella Powder – Tablets

Chlorella Tablets are manufactured without additives or adjuvants to strict hygiene standards. Each batch undergoes microbiological control for purity. Then the packaging is made in vacuum sealed aluminum bags.

Organic chlorella with multi-layered cell walls

Chlorella algae – for healthy detoxification – differences from AFA, spirulina

Chlorella algae, one of the most ancient forms of life on Earth, once helped turn the barren surface of our planet into a green environment. It is the first known form of plant life with a cell nucleus. Unlike spirulina algae, this is a “true” plant form with cellulose cell walls. It is believed to be the most highly concentrated plant food ever.

A microalgae with a long tradition in Asia, composed of about 60% vegetable protein, and owes its green color to its high chlorophyll content.

Method of action

Man has an amazing ability to protect the body from external, negative influences. To do this, it is necessary to have an adequate supply of nutrients, which can be supported by a special nutritional supplement.

Chlorella algae contain a significant amount of zinc and iron, as well as a number of amino acids. Chlorella is especially distinguished by its high content of chlorophyll – a valuable solar storehouse of plants. Some believe that chlorophyll, although not a nutrient, is of particular importance to humans. Chlorella algae can also make a significant contribution to providing the body with vitamin A, beta-carotene, and vitamin B12.

Our organic chlorella products are made from algae that have been left in their natural state, ie. multilayer membranes were not destroyed during further processing.

The multi-layered cell walls of chlorella algae allow you to unlock the full cleansing potential of the algae and are responsible for the ability to bind and remove unwanted substances from the body. In turn, you will have to come to terms with the fact that it is more difficult to obtain nutrients from algae. Conclusion: If you are sure of good digestion and the ability to cleanse is important to you, then just in case, choose a natural product with whole cell walls. If digestive upsets occur, the amount of organic chlorella should be reduced for a few days and then slowly increased again or switched to organic chlorella with a broken cell wall.

Organic Chlorella FAQ

What is an algae? Chlorella Differences, Algae AFA, Spirulina, Chlorella Benefits, Detox, Dosage, Chlorella Tablets or Powder

What is algae? – The difference between an algae and a plant

Algae are lower unicellular or multicellular plants that are found almost exclusively in water and are capable of photosynthesis. They do not belong to real plants, because they have a simpler structure.

Algae are one of the most ancient living organisms on Earth. It was they who enriched the atmosphere with oxygen many millions of years ago.

What is the difference between the types of chlorella algae, what is chlorella vulgaris?

Chlorella vulgaris is a unicellular, globular green algae. It is the most famous representative of the freshwater algae Chlorella, which roughly means “little young green”.

More than 100 species of chlorella have been scientifically identified. A certain role is played, for example, by the chemical composition of the cell wall and differences in the structure of the cell. However, the classification is still associated with many uncertainties.

Scientific research has shown that not all Chlorella algae are the same. Breeding methods and processing methods can have a decisive influence on their health suitability. Each manufacturer has its own methods and procedures, which of course affects the quality of the final product.

The most common cultivated strains are Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella pyrenoidosa or sorokiana.

Chlorella difference – AFA algae

AFA algae are so-called cyanobacteria and grow wild exclusively in Klamath Lake in the US state of Oregon. They cannot be cultivated or manipulated in any way. To survive the harsh winters, they settle to the bottom of the lake and hibernate there. Because they are high in omega-3 fatty acids, their cell walls remain flexible and do not burst. Unlike the green algae chlorella, AFA is blue-green in color.

On the other hand, as we know, chlorella can be cultivated, and depending on the method of cultivation and processing, its beneficial properties can be changed.

The difference between chlorella and spirulina

Chlorella is a green algae. It thrives exclusively in fresh water. Spirulina is a blue-green algae, which, accordingly, has a blue-green color. It is found in both salt and fresh water. Like chlorella, it is grown in indoor and outdoor aquaculture.

Unlike spirulina algae, chlorella is a “true” plant form with cellulose cell walls. It is believed to be the most highly concentrated herbal food ever.

Chlorella or spirulina?

Both types of algae contain valuable vital complexes of minerals, secondary plant substances and trace elements.

Chlorella

has a cell wall that humans cannot digest. This is the biggest difference between these two types of algae.

Spirulina

is easier to digest due to the lack of a cell wall, but it is not as effective in detoxifying the body. It is because of this cell wall, because multi-layered cell walls, including microfibrils, are distributed in the intestine like a sponge. Thus, they provide binding of heavy metals. This process prevents harmful substances from re-entering the blood through the intestinal mucosa.

Algae chlorella is much richer in chlorophyll than spirulina. This also makes it a winner in cleansing the liver, blood and intestines. In addition, chlorella contains the growth factor CGF described above and thus has a cell renewal effect and acts as a fountain of youth. Here, the green algae wins in all respects and outperforms the blue-green algae spirulina. Scientists have even proven that chlorella can repair DNA damage under certain circumstances. Spirulina

, on the other hand, contains slightly more protein than chlorella algae. In addition, spirulina is more easily absorbed by the human body due to the lack of a cell membrane.

What are CGF (Controlled Grow Factor) and CVE (Chlorella Vulgaris Extract)?

CVE – Chlorella Vulgaris Extract is a condensed extract of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris. Highly concentrated and highly bioavailable extracts support the body and brain in a variety of ways, based on their individual application. CVE has been shown to be particularly effective in cases of excessive stress, detoxification, and cancer.

CGF – Chlorella Growth Factor – Chlorella growth factor is part of the chlorella organism. This is a complex process that ensures the division and reproduction of single-celled chlorella algae.

Difference between CVE and CGF: They almost do not differ from each other in their action. However, both extracts have their own main effects. In the case of CGF, they are to support the development of the child (physical and psychological) and in rehabilitation after accidents or operations.

Application of chlorella

A healthy body is able to protect itself from external negative influences. When the negative influence becomes too strong, the body needs outside help. With the help of special nutritional supplements, we can contribute to our well-being.

Chlorella algae contain a significant amount of zinc and iron, as well as a number of amino acids. Chlorella is particularly distinguished by its high content of chlorophyll, a valuable solar reservoir for plants. There are opinions that chlorophyll, although it is not a nutrient, is of particular importance for humans.

Chlorella algae can also make a significant contribution to providing the body with vitamin A, beta-carotene and vitamin B12.

Chlorella owes its deep green color to an unusually high content of chlorophyll, which has never been measured in such a concentration in any other plant. Chlorophyll is also known as the “green blood” of plants because its chemical structure is almost identical to the human blood pigment, hemoglobin. Therefore, there is no better nutrient for our blood than chlorophyll.

Chlorella and Chlorophyll

The high amount of chlorophyll in chlorella is of great importance to the liver as it protects the liver cells from the countless toxins that enter the body every day. Chlorophyll detoxifies our liver and ensures that “purified” toxins are quickly eliminated through the intestines.

But chlorophyll can do much more:

  • stimulates the formation of red blood cells and helps cleanse the blood
  • increases the amount of oxygen in the blood and improves cellular respiration
  • activates the metabolism
  • protects cell walls from enzymatic destruction by invading bacteria
  • normalizes the secretion of digestive juices
  • supports all healing processes
  • has harmonizing effect and promotes inner peace

Dosage of Chlorella

Recommended Dosage: Swallow 3 tablets 3 times daily with plenty of liquid, equivalent to 3. 6 g of chlorella.

Chlorella detoxification mechanism

Chlorella algae’s detoxification potential is linked to its three-layered cell wall, which can absorb toxins. Chlorophyll binds heavy metals and toxins in the liver, which are then excreted through the intestines.

Chlorella as a food

Chlorella vulgaris has long been recognized as a safe food by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Our 100% pure chlorella powder tablets are easy to swallow and ideal for on the go. In powder form, chlorella is difficult to swallow due to its very strong taste that takes some getting used to, so tablets are preferred over powder.

Is chlorella a source of protein?

Chlorella is considered an excellent source of protein. Constituting about 60%, chlorella provides the body with a very large amount of high-quality, easily digestible proteins.

Chlorella, broken cell wall or natural is better?

Multilayered cell walls only, i. e. the full, unbreakable partitions of chlorella algae can unlock the algae’s full cleansing potential. They are responsible for the ability to bind and remove unwanted substances from the body. To do this, you will have to come to terms with the fact that the nutrients from algae are more difficult to obtain.

Conclusion: If you are sure of good digestion and the ability to cleanse is important to you, then just in case, choose a natural product with whole cell walls. If digestive disorders occur, the amount of chlorella should be reduced for a few days, and then slowly increased again or switched to chlorella with destroyed cell walls.

Chlorella

Superfood microalgae with cleansing properties.

Chlorella is a storehouse of nutrients with exceptional nutritional value.

This product contains 100% chlorella concentrate – i.e. chlorella with a destroyed cell membrane (which interferes with absorption). It is in this form that chlorella is absorbed as much as possible and at the same time retains all the beneficial substances.

Chlorella improves metabolism and cleanses the intestines, its constituent sporopollenin binds heavy metals and toxins and removes from the body in a natural way.

Chlorella contains over 500 minerals and vitamins. Of particular importance is chlorophyll, which gives chlorella a bright green hue. Interestingly, chlorophyll and hemoglobin are incredibly similar in structure. And this means that when using algae, you can improve the composition of the blood.
