Can Stress Cause a Missed or Late Period?

Can Stress Affect Your Period?

Is stress behind your irregular or missed period? Here’s how to tell.

Stress and periods go together like peanut butter and jelly.. in the worst way. As if getting your period wasn’t anxiety-inducing enough (time to unwind the heating pad, yet AGAIN — and where is that stash of dark chocolate?), stress can also cause major shifts in your period and menstrual cycle, namely delaying it. A recent study found that high levels of stress can cause irregular periods.

Ironic right?

Stressing about not getting or missing your period can actually make you…not get your period. It’s a real chicken-and-the-egg scenario. Or in this case, stress-about-the-not-fertilized-egg and the not-fertilized-egg scenario.

Stress less and use our period tracker to know when you’re period is scheduled to start and when it is scheduled to stop.

Why does stress cause delayed/missed/late periods?

Even if you rarely have to deal with irregular periods, sometimes stress can throw a wrench in the works and mess up your whole menstrual cycle.

Yup, stress can actually cause your period to be late or delayed when your body is so freaked out by keeping you calm and what’s happening around you, that makes you anxious, that your body’s hormones hold off on critical parts of your menstrual cycle, like ovulation. Think about it from a cavewoman perspective. Stress causes your body to go into fight-or-flight mode, and if you’re running from a giant wooly mammoth, let’s say, it makes sense that your body would be like, “Oh this would be a not-so-great time to have a baby right now” and hit pause on keeping your reproductive systems ready-to-go. While yes, this does introduce a whole new set of stress, your body probably thinks that Cavewoman-you would likely not have time to ask, “Oh crap, why is my period late?” in this scenario.

Ideally you are not so anxious that your body interprets your stress level as running-from-wooly-mammoth-high, but you get it.

How long can stress delay your period? Like, can it stop my period completely?

Stress can delay your period, but the good news is that stress shouldn’t completely stop your period (like, forever). If you’ve gone more than six weeks (the amount of time it takes to classify a period as fully “missed”) since your last period, it may be time to see a doctor and make sure everything is okay.

Can stress cause spotting?

Absolutely. That fight-or-flight response we mentioned above isn’t limited to just shutting your period down or delaying it for a few days. Stress can also cause spotting, aka when you kind of have a little blood coming out (you might notice it when you use the bathroom or wipe), but not enough for you to qualify as a full period. This often happens between periods, leading you to be like, “why is this happening 15 days early?”

Okay, you’re right, I’ve been under a ton of pressure lately. How do I fix my period cycle so that stress doesn’t impact it anymore?

As great as it would be if there were a way to communicate to your body, “Hey, I’m done worrying, you can make my period normal again!” it’s easier said than done. Make sure you’re taking time for yourself to do things you like and enjoy. Yes, doing you might just be exactly what your body (including your entire reproductive systems and menstrual cycle) need right now.

And if worrying about whether your period is late or not is the number one thing that’s bothering you and keeping you up at night, it might be worth it to book an appointment to see the doctor. Ugh yes, you might have to call on the phone and make an appointment, but the peace of mind you’ll feel afterwards if you are able to find a cause and remedy it (or at least be soothed by your doctor and told “It’s no big deal” from someone with a fancy degree) may be worth it.

What are some possible other reasons behind my irregular period? What are some common late period causes besides stress?

There are a lot of factors besides stress that can impact your menstrual cycle and cause a delayed or late period, like pregnancy, birth control (both starting or stopping birth control can shift your system out of whack for a bit), menopause, weight loss, and too much exercise. Hormone changes could also be a cause of why your period is late that you’d wanna chat over with your doctor.

Stopped or missed periods – NHS

Why your periods might stop

There are a number of reasons why your periods can stop. The most common reasons are:

Periods can also sometimes stop as a result of a medical condition, such as heart disease, uncontrolled diabetes, an overactive thyroid, or premature menopause.

Pregnancy

You might be pregnant if you’re sexually active and your period is late. Pregnancy is a common reason why periods unexpectedly stop. It can sometimes happen if the contraception you’re using fails.

It might be that your period is simply late, so you could wait a few days to see if it arrives. If it does not arrive, you can do a pregnancy test to confirm whether or not you’re pregnant.

It’s important to be aware that you can get pregnant in the days after your period is normally due. This can happen if the release of an egg (ovulation) is delayed – for example, as a result of illness or stress.

Stress

If you’re stressed, your menstrual cycle can become longer or shorter, your periods may stop altogether, or they might become more painful.

Try to avoid becoming stressed by making sure you have time to relax. Regular exercise, such as running, swimming and yoga, can help you relax. Breathing exercises can also help.

If you’re finding it hard to cope with stress, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) may be recommended. CBT is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and act.

Sudden weight loss

Excessive or sudden weight loss can cause your periods to stop. Severely restricting the amount of calories you eat stops the production of hormones needed for ovulation.

Your GP may refer you to a dietitian if you’re underweight, which is when you have a body mass index (BMI) of less than 18.5. A dietitian will be able to advise you about how to regain weight safely.

If your weight loss is caused by an eating disorder, such as anorexia, they may refer you to an eating disorder specialist or team of specialists.

Being overweight

Being overweight can also affect your menstrual cycle. If you’re overweight, your body may produce an excess amount of oestrogen, one of the hormones that regulate the reproductive system in women.

Excess oestrogen can affect how often you have periods, and can also cause your periods to stop.

Your GP may refer you to a dietitian if you’re overweight, with a BMI of 30 or more, and it’s affecting your periods. The dietitian will be able to advise you about losing weight safely.

Doing too much exercise

The stress that intense physical activity places on your body can affect the hormones responsible for your periods. Losing too much body fat through intense exercise can also stop you ovulating.

You’ll be advised to reduce your level of activity if excessive exercise has caused your periods to stop.

If you’re a professional athlete, you may benefit from seeing a doctor who specialises in sports medicine. They’ll be able to give you advice about how to maintain your performance without disrupting your periods.

Contraceptive pill

You might miss a period every so often if you’re taking the contraceptive pill. This is not usually a cause for concern.

Some types of contraception, such as the progestogen-only pill (POP), contraceptive injection and intrauterine system (IUS), particularly Mirena, can cause periods to stop altogether.

However, your periods should return when you stop using these types of contraception.

Menopause

You may start missing periods as you approach the menopause. This is because oestrogen levels start to decrease, and ovulation becomes less regular. After the menopause, your periods stop completely.

The menopause is a natural part of ageing in women, which usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55. The average age for a woman to reach the menopause is 51 in the UK.

However, around 1 in 100 women go through the menopause before the age of 40. This is known as premature menopause or premature ovarian failure.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovaries contain a large number of harmless follicles, which are underdeveloped sacs in which eggs develop. If you have PCOS, these sacs are often unable to release an egg, which means ovulation does not take place.

PCOS is thought to be very common, affecting about 1 in every 10 women in the UK. The condition is responsible for as many as 1 in 3 cases of stopped periods.

When to see your GP

See your GP if you’re not pregnant – you’ve had a negative pregnancy test – and you’ve missed more than 3 periods in a row.

If you’re sexually active and you have not taken a pregnancy test, your GP may advise you to take one.

They may also ask you about:

  • your medical history
  • your family’s medical history
  • your sexual history
  • any emotional issues you’re having
  • any recent changes in your weight
  • the amount of exercise you do

Your GP may recommend waiting to see whether your periods return on their own. In some cases you may need treatment for your periods to return.

You should also see your GP if your periods stop before you’re 45 or if you’re still bleeding when you’re over 55.

Referral to a consultant

If your GP thinks a medical condition might have caused your periods to stop, they may refer you to a consultant who specialises in the condition.

Depending on what your GP suspects is causing the problem, you may be referred to:

  • a gynaecologist – a specialist in treating conditions that affect the female reproductive system
  • an endocrinologist – a specialist in treating hormonal conditions

You may have a full gynaecological examination and various tests, including:

  • blood tests – to see whether you have abnormal levels of certain hormones
  • an ultrasound scan, CT scan or MRI scan – to identify any problems with your reproductive system or the pituitary gland in your brain

Treating underlying conditions

If test results show a medical condition has caused your periods to stop, you may be offered treatment for your condition.

For example, if the cause is PCOS, you may be advised to take the contraceptive pill or tablets containing a hormone called progesterone.

Read more about the treatment of PCOS.

If the cause is early menopause (premature ovarian failure), this means the ovaries no longer function normally. Hormone medicine is usually recommended. Treatments may include the contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

If you have an overactive thyroid gland, you may be given medication to stop your thyroid producing too many hormones.

9 Reasons Your Period Is Late When You KNOW You’re Not Pregnant

Have you ever had a late or missed period when you are certain you aren’t pregnant? It may cause you a moment of panic, but a late period is often caused by factors that have nothing to do with reproduction. If you have a late period and you are sure you’re not pregnant, one of the following factors may be to blame.

1. Stress

Stress is not just a mental problem. Being stressed for extended periods can have negative effects on your physical health. Along with causing weight gain, sleep disturbances, and headaches, stress can make your period late. Stress causes the body to prioritize the bodily functions that are essential for keeping you alive, and menstruation is not one of those essential functions.

2. Weight

Your weight can affect your ovulation, which in turn will alter your period. If you are obese or underweight, you may have a late or missed period. Both extremes interfere with the hormonal balance that keeps ovulation regular. This is also the case if you’ve recently had an extreme weight fluctuation due to surgery or illness. For women who are obese, losing weight may help make ovulation and menstruation more regular. Underweight women may need to increase caloric intake and gain weight to have regular periods.

3. Birth Control

Some hormonal birth control can alter the regularity of your menstrual cycle. For some women, this is the desired effect, but when it’s unexpected it can be worrying. Hormonal birth control works by stopping ovulation, so not having a period is a sign that it’s working. If you are taking oral birth control, the prescription may include a week’s worth of placebo pills. This can cause bleeding, but it is not technically a period, but rather withdrawal bleeding. Sometimes discontinuing or starting birth control can make menstruation irregular.

4. Other Medications

Non-hormonal medications can also cause you to have a late period. These drugs include antidepressants, antipsychotics, chemotherapy drugs, and corticosteroids.

5. You’ve Just Started Menstruating

Young women who have only had a few periods may not have regular cycles at first. It can take a few months for cycles to become regular. This is also true if you have just come off of birth control medication that stopped menstrual periods. It makes take a little while for you to get a period every month again.

6. Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding mothers may have irregular periods, very light periods, or no period at all. This is especially true if your baby is still getting most of his or her nutrition from breastfeeding. However, just because you don’t get a regular period during this time, that doesn’t mean you don’t need to use birth control to prevent another pregnancy.

7. PCOS

Polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, is a condition in which a woman’s reproductive hormones are not balanced. PCOS can cause cysts on the ovaries, but not every woman with PCOS has cysts. However, one symptom of the condition that is common is late and irregular periods due to interruptions in ovulation. If this is the reason your period is late, your doctor may suggest hormonal birth control to regulate the menstrual cycle.

8. Thyroid Disorders

Your thyroid is a gland that is responsible for your metabolism and other bodily functions. Abnormalities in how the thyroid functions can affect your menstrual cycle and make your period late. An overactive thyroid is referred to as hyperthyroidism and an underactive thyroid is called hypothyroidism. Both can affect your cycle.

9. Perimenopause

If your late period is part of an irregular menstrual cycle, it could be a sign of perimenopause. During perimenopause, the body is transitioning from the reproductive stage to menopause. Perimenopause can happen at different ages, but it happens for most women in their late 40s. Periods during menopause may be lighter, heavier, or irregular in frequency. According to the Office on Women’s Health, perimenopause usually lasts between 2 and 10 years. When your period has stopped for a full year, then you have reached menopause.

How Long Can Stress Delay Your Period?

Cut back on caffeine and alcohol

Both alcohol and caffeine can increase cortisol levels, so it’s recommended that you reduce your intake of both of these when dealing with major life changes, going through a rough patch, or nearing your menstrual cycle. Instead, you might try decaffeinated beverages or herbal teas that are known to have calming effects, such as chamomile or lavender.

Prioritize healthy sleep

Getting better sleep is often one of the best ways to overcome stress. Often, we focus on the quantity of sleep, but quality is also important. Most people need about 7–9 hours of sleep to really refresh themselves. Sticking to a sleep schedule and routine can help improve your quality of sleep.

Avoiding screens for a few hours before you go to bed, wearing a sleep mask, and using a white noise machine can all make falling asleep and staying asleep easier. This will allow the body to fall into a proper sleep rhythm which can lower the chance of insomnia.

How to prevent stress from delaying your period

The first step in preventing stress from delaying your period is to understand what’s causing your stress and how much stress you can manage. You may not always be able to avoid stress, but you can develop healthy ways to cope with it. Tracking your cycle and any changes you experience in your moods will make it easier to identify any issues that may arise so you can better understand why your period is late.

While stress (physical, emotional, or nutritional) is a common cause for a late period, it is just one of many potential reasons for a delay in menstruation. Pregnancy, hormonal birth control, and health problems like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also make your period late.

Sometimes the stress of worrying about a potential unintended pregnancy can make your period late. Taking a pregnancy test to find out if you are pregnant can reduce this stress. If your period is late, and you’re experiencing symptoms like unwanted hair growth, headaches, weight gain, and difficulty sleeping, you may want to see a health care provider to rule out PCOS, which is a treatable condition.

Tracking your mood, life events, and symptoms in an app like Flo can help you gain perspective on your level of stress, and taking simple measures like exercising or making time for meditation can help you get your period back on track.

The Occasional Missed Period – Blog Post By Rebecca Podolsky MD

Having a late or missed period can be a source of stress and anxiety, and is a common reason for visiting the gynecologist. Generally speaking, an isolated late or missed period is not a cause for concern. It is very common, even in women with cycles that are usually regular. There are many possible causes.

What Should I Do?

In women who are sexually active with male partners, it is important to take a home pregnancy test if your period is late. In most cases, a home pregnancy test found at your local drug store is perfectly fine (there are low rates of both false positive and false negative results, but these are unusual). If a home pregnancy test is negative, and your period is more than a few days late, you can usually be reassured that you are not pregnant. If a home pregnancy test is positive, you should always make an appointment with your gynecologist.

Other Reasons for Missed Periods

If your pregnancy test is negative, there are many other possible reasons why your period might be late (or even skip an entire cycle). These are:

  • Stress
  • Change in body weight
  • Increased exercise
  • Poor sleep
  • Travel across time zones
  • Certain medications including birth control pills
  • Aging

Stress

Stress can disrupt your menstrual cycle because of the way our bodies are designed to respond to stress, which is to shut down all non-essential bodily functions (like the reproductive system) at least temporarily. Your brain, which makes the first in a series of hormones that regulates your menstrual cycle, diverts this energy to “survival mode” in response to increased stress.

Increased Exercise and Changes in Weight

Frequent rigorous exercise (especially combined with low body fat) can be interpreted by your brain as a “stress” and can disrupt your cycle in a similar way. On a related note, if you lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time, you are likely to notice some type of menstrual irregularity.

Being over or underweight can lead to changes in your menstrual by affecting how much estrogen your body produces. Both too much and too little estrogen can cause your cycle to be irregular or stop.

Medication

Taking certain medications can affect your menstrual cycle. For example, may medications work by affecting various hormones in your body including:

  • Birth control pills
  • Thyroid medication
  • Steroids
  • Antipsychotics

Birth control pills prevent pregnancy in a few different ways including stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucous (so sperm cannot enter the reproductive tract), and thinning the uterine lining (endometrium).

As this lining becomes thinner over the first few months on the pill, many women have irregular spotting or bleeding. Once the uterine lining is thinned out, many women notice that their period is much lighter/shorter and sometimes it stops coming altogether- there is simply nothing building up to shed each month. This is nothing to worry about and is, in fact, a benefit of being on the pill (and reverses once you stop it).

Sleep and Travel

Poor sleep, as well as frequent travel across time zones, can throw off your menstrual cycle by affecting your reproductive hormones as well as your melatonin levels, both of which can impact your ovulation and periods.

Age

Finally, as women enter perimenopause (the years leading up to menopause) they can start having late or missed periods as a result of the changes in their hormone levels during this phase.

If you have a late or missed period, don’t panic. In many cases, it’s the result of a temporary disruption and things will go back to normal. If they don’t, you should make an appointment with your gynecologist.

We can help figure out what might be going on, and discuss possible treatments with you. If irregular cycles become a pattern, especially if you frequently skip entire cycles or go 3 or more months without a period, you should be evaluated for underlying medical conditions and discuss treatment with your doctor.

10 Reasons for a Missed Period

Besides pregnancy, there are a number of possible reasons for a missed period. Pregnancy is by far the most common cause of a missed period, but there are some other medical reasons and lifestyle factors that impact your menstrual cycle. Extreme weight loss, hormonal irregularities, and menopause are among the most common causes if you’re not pregnant.

You may miss a period for one or two months, or you may experience complete amenorrhea, which is a lack of menstruation for three or more months in a row. Here are 10 common reasons your period may be delayed:

Illustration by Cindy Chung, Verywell

Stress

Profound stress alters the production of a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), interfering with ovulation and regular menstruation.

The type of stress that’s severe enough to affect your menstrual period usually isn’t just a matter of having a lot going on at work or school.

If you’re coping with an overwhelming situation or experiencing prolonged anxiety, with more than one missed period, talk to your doctor and get a referral for counseling to help you decide what to do about the issues that are causing you stress. Once your stress is back to a manageable level, it can sometimes take a few months or more for your cycles to become regular again.

Extreme Exercise

Extreme exercise can cause alterations in pituitary hormones and thyroid hormones, resulting in changes in ovulation and menstruation. Don’t worry about exercise causing you to miss your cycle if you work out for one or two hours per day. It takes strenuous exercise for hours and hours every day to produces these hormonal changes.

If you are planning on exercising for hours every day, be sure to see a sports medicine doctor who can work with you on maintaining optimal nutrition, recommended stretching, and blood testing as needed, so that your body can support all of the physical demands that you are putting on it.

Illness

Chronic conditions that can affect your menstrual cycles include thyroid disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), pituitary tumors (which may or may not be cancer), diseases of the adrenal gland, ovarian cysts, liver dysfunction, and diabetes.

When any of these illnesses interfere with your cycle, it may not return to normal until the condition is treated. Congenital chromosomal conditions such as Turner syndrome and androgen insensitivity syndrome typically cause menstrual and fertility problems and are often associated with amenorrhea.

Acute illness, such as pneumonia, a heart attack, kidney failure, or meningitis, can result in rapid weight loss and nutritional deficiency or hormone dysfunction, which can cause you to miss your period during the illness. After the illness is resolved, it might take a few months before your period returns again.

A Change in Your Schedule

Changing schedules can throw off your body clock. If you frequently change work shifts, going from days to nights, and particularly if your schedule is erratic, your period can be fairly unpredictable.

Generally, changes in schedule shouldn’t cause you to completely miss your period but can cause it to start earlier or later than expected. Your cycle can also change by a few days if you experience jet lag.

Medications

Some medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, thyroid medications, anticonvulsants, and some chemotherapy medications, may cause your period to be absent or delayed.

Hormonal contraceptives like Depo-Provera, progesterone-only MiniPill, Mirena IUD, and Nexplanon can also influence your cycle.

Each type of contraceptive has its own list of anticipated effects on your menstrual cycle, and some are associated with heavy periods, some with light periods, and some with amenorrhea.

Weight Changes

Being overweight, underweight, or experiencing drastic changes in weight all impact your cycle. Obesity influences estrogen and progesterone and may even result in decreased fertility. Very high body mass index (BMI) is associated with missed periods, and weight loss can help regulate the menstrual cycle for women who are obese.

Being severely underweight interferes with regular menstrual cycles as well. When the body lacks fat and other nutrients, it cannot produce hormones the way it should.

Women with anorexia (very low food intake) or who burn far more calories with exercise than what they consume by eating may experience amenorrhea. Typically, weight gain will help your periods to return.

Rapid weight changes, which can include weight gain or weight loss due to illness, medication, or dietary changes, may interfere with hormone production or release, causing you to miss one period or more.

Recently Started Periods

A normal menstrual cycle lasts from 21 to 35 days in healthy women, but it can vary. This is especially true for young women who are just starting to get their periods or for women who have not had periods for several years and are starting again.

A young woman who has had just a few cycles may go months without another one until a regular pattern begins. And women who have not had a period due to contraceptive use, hormonal therapy, or illness may not resume having a regular period every month right away.

Perimenopause and Menopause

Perimenopause is the period of time of transition from reproductive age to a non-reproductive age. Your periods may be lighter, heavier, more frequent, or less frequent. In most cases, they’ll just be something different than what you’re used to.

Menopause is when you have reached the point in your life where you will no longer ovulate or menstruate. The average age of menopause is 51 years old.

Breastfeeding

You may not have periods at all or you may have infrequent or very light periods when breastfeeding, particularly if breastfeeding provides your baby with all or almost all of his or her caloric intake.

Many women believe that breastfeeding is a form of birth control, but it’s is not. Even if you don’t have periods when you are breastfeeding, you can get pregnant, so use another form of birth control if you are not ready for another little one.

Ectopic Pregnancy

If you think that you can’t be pregnant because you have an IUD, there is a small chance that your missed period could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy can happen sometimes due to the shape of the device and may not cause you to test positive on a pregnancy test. Your doctor can confirm or exclude this possibility with a pelvic examination or an ultrasound.

When to Call Your Doctor

Missing a period or two, even when you suspect that you know the reason, is something that needs to be investigated by your doctor.

You should see your doctor urgently if you experience any of the following:

  • New or worsening headaches
  • Vision changes
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fevers
  • Hair loss
  • Breast secretions or milk production
  • Excess hair growth

A Word From Verywell

There are many reasons for late periods, and while most are not cause for alarm, you do need an evaluation and treatment if you have completely missed more than one period.

How your missed periods are treated depends on why you aren’t having your period. The treatment can include lifestyle changes, such as diet or stress reduction, or may involve hormone replacement therapy.

Many things can affect how your body responds to a symptom and what kind of care you may need. These include:

  • Your age. Babies and older adults tend to get sicker quicker.
  • Your overall health. If you have a condition such as diabetes, HIV, cancer, or heart disease, you may need to pay closer attention to certain symptoms and seek care sooner.
  • Medicines you take. Certain medicines, such as blood thinners (anticoagulants), medicines that suppress the immune system like steroids or chemotherapy, herbal remedies, or supplements can cause symptoms or make them worse.
  • Recent health events, such as surgery or injury. These kinds of events can cause symptoms afterwards or make them more serious.
  • Your health habits and lifestyle, such as eating and exercise habits, smoking, alcohol or drug use, sexual history, and travel.

Try Home Treatment

You have answered all the questions. Based on your answers, you may be able to take care of this problem at home.

  • Try home treatment to relieve the symptoms.
  • Call your doctor if symptoms get worse or you have any concerns (for example, if symptoms are not getting better as you would expect). You may need care sooner.

Pain in adults and older children

  • Severe pain (8 to 10): The pain is so bad that you can’t stand it for more than a few hours, can’t sleep, and can’t do anything else except focus on the pain.
  • Moderate pain (5 to 7): The pain is bad enough to disrupt your normal activities and your sleep, but you can tolerate it for hours or days. Moderate can also mean pain that comes and goes even if it’s severe when it’s there.
  • Mild pain (1 to 4): You notice the pain, but it is not bad enough to disrupt your sleep or activities.

Shock is a life-threatening condition that may quickly occur after a sudden illness or injury.

Adults and older children often have several symptoms of shock. These include:

  • Passing out (losing consciousness).
  • Feeling very dizzy or lightheaded, like you may pass out.
  • Feeling very weak or having trouble standing.
  • Not feeling alert or able to think clearly. You may be confused, restless, fearful, or unable to respond to questions.

Many prescription and nonprescription medicines can affect the menstrual cycle. A few examples are:

  • Aspirin and other medicines (called blood thinners) that prevent blood clots.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (for example, Advil or Motrin) and naproxen (for example, Aleve).
  • Hormonal forms of birth control, such as birth control pills, Depo-Provera injections, Implanon or Nexplanon implants, and the levonorgestrel IUD (Mirena).

Stress as a cause of menstrual irregularities :: ACMD

The female hormonal system, one of the main functions of which is to regulate the menstrual cycle, is extremely sensitive to various stressful influences. Not surprisingly, against the background of changes in the quality of life in our country, an abnormal cycle is becoming common. We propose to consider the main symptoms that accompany menstrual irregularities and identify the role of stress as the cause of their occurrence.

In practice, every gynecologist has more than once encountered patients who accept menstrual irregularities as normal. As an example, bleeding that occurs in the middle of a cycle is often regarded by patients as normal menstruation. Let’s take a look at the main symptoms, having noticed which, it is strongly recommended to visit a doctor:

  • Menstruation lasts more than a week.
  • The menstrual cycle (from the first day of bleeding to the first day of the next bleeding) is less than 21 days or more than 35 days.
  • The amount of bleeding has increased and the time between changing a pad or tampon is less than 2 hours.
  • Severe, sudden menstrual pains are noted. It is clear that most women, especially those who have not given birth, may experience moderate pain, especially in the first 3 days.
  • Menstrual bleeding in menopause.

The reasons for the onset of cycle disorders can be an imbalance of sex hormones, lack of ovulation, cystic changes in the ovaries, pathology of the thyroid gland, oncopathology, medical interventions on the uterus and its appendages, as well as changes in the hormonal background due to impaired nervous regulation, which include emotional and physical stress.

Chronic overstrain of the nervous system, arising, as an example, against the background of the loss or change of work, moving, fear for the life or loss of a loved one, depressive worries about the future – adversely affect the hormonal system of a woman, manifesting itself in a violation of the regularity of the menstrual cycle.

Physical stress, which is no less detrimental to the body, include aggressive diets, a sharp decrease or excessive weight gain, exhausting work regime and inadequate physical activity.

To reduce stress, it is important to adhere to a healthy diet, follow the daily routine. Hardening procedures, regular, with a gradual increase in the load, sports, have a positive effect. It is recommended to take medications to strengthen and restore the nervous system.

Do not underestimate and postpone a visit to a specialist in the manifestation of the above symptoms of a cycle disorder.

At the ATsMD-Medox clinic, professional gynecologists will help you deal with “female” problems, if necessary, they will conduct an examination (ultrasound, laboratory examination) and individually select an effective treatment for you.

Remember! It is important to establish the root cause in the early stages, since long-term persistent changes in the hormonal system of a woman can lead to organic pathological changes.

Be healthy and beautiful!

“Will they give me sick leave because of my periods?” Asking the gynecologist uncomfortable questions about menstruation and PMS – citydog.by

Under the heading “I’m ashamed to ask” we collect questions that Belarusians are usually embarrassed to ask friends and professionals, but they often google.Today we asked a gynecologist to answer important and “shameful” questions about menstruation.

► At what age should menstruation begin?

– It used to be thought that at the age of 12-13, but now there are more and more girls who have it even at 10-11. For our region, the norm is 11-13 years old , but 14 years are not considered a late age.

Such acceleration is taking place everywhere, and we cannot name the exact reason for it.However, it is noticeable not only in this: for example, three-year-old children still do not really talk, but already know how to use phones and tablets.

The menstrual cycle, by the way, not only begins earlier, but also ends later: earlier the reproductive period lasted on average up to 45 years, and now women menstruate up to 55. Everything is changing, and we cannot say that this is a bad trend.

►And if they started later?

– If they started before the age of 16, established quickly, run regularly and flow well – most likely, there is nothing wrong.But if menstruation begins at the age of 16-18, there is a possibility that the woman will then have gynecological problems, problems with pregnancy, even if her periods are regular and without interruption. Late onset of menstruation always speaks of an imperfect hormonal system.

How long does it take to set the cycle?

– It is different for everyone, but normally it takes no more than a year. If your period has not been established during the year, you need to look for some kind of problem.

How long should a cycle take?

– A regular menstrual cycle from the first day of menstruation to the first day of the next should last from 21 to 33 days .

What if my cycle periodically jumps? This is problem?

– If the cycle length often changes in the first year of menstruation, this is a variant of the norm. Also, fluctuations for a couple of days at a later age may be normal, if the duration of the entire cycle still fits within the normal range of 21-33 days. Everything that goes beyond these limits is a pathology , you need to look for hormonal imbalance. Especially when these failures are regular and not one-time.

Why might there be a delay?

– The most common reason is hormonal imbalance.For example, an imbalance between estrogens and gestagens. However, the reason for the delay can be not only sex hormones, but also hormones of the same thyroid gland, because all organs of the endocrine system are connected.

In general, there can be a lot of reasons for the delay: severe somatic and gynecological diseases, stress, suppressed immunity, problems of the nervous system, etc.

ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF BLOOD, CLUSTER AND ODOR

What should be your period, what intensity?

– Menstruation should last from three to seven days , and their intensity may be different: for someone they last 5 days, they begin with blood anesthesia and end with abundant secretions.And for someone they go for three days and are always abundant – everything is individual. But if a woman has all her periods in the form of bleeding and only one day a little more blood appeared, then this suggests that there is a hormonal imbalance, a lack of estrogen.

Is it okay if the intensity changes?

– Usually, menstruation is always of a certain level, and if deviations appear – there are much more or much less of them – then this speaks of pathology.

How much blood is the norm?

– For each woman, the amount of blood will also be individual.The main thing is that menstruation does not lead to anemia. If a woman’s periods go abundantly for 7 days, but at the same time she has good hemoglobin, there is no feeling of weakness, this is the norm. But if after such menstruation she is forced to take pills to increase the level of iron, then this is pathological blood loss.

Is it normal if there are blood clots?

– Here it is necessary to distinguish blood clots from exfoliated particles of the endometrium. The former are usually large in size, dark and somewhat visually resemble a chicken liver.And the latter are smaller in size, lighter, and it is not immediately clear what kind of fabric it is.

If during your period there are inclusions of endometrial particles, this is normal. But blood clots are a serious problem . Such blood loss can be due to a submucous node, polyp, and if clots appear after a short delay in menstruation, it may even be a clinic of spontaneous miscarriage.

What should smell like?

– Menstruation has a specific smell: blood also smells if there is a lot of it.But this smell should not be very unpleasant, sharp.

PRO PMS

What generally happens to the rest of the body during and before menstruation?

– All systems and organs in the body are hormonally dependent. On the eve of menstruation and on its first day, there is a hormonal decline, and the body reacts to it. On these days, some women may feel depressed, unwell, while others, due to their characteristics, tolerate this period very calmly.

And if my chest hurts before or during menstruation, pimples appear, and my stomach swells?

– Breast tension, swelling, rashes, worsening mood are PMS symptoms. He usually says that there is a deficiency of the second phase hormone – progesterone . And even if you donate blood for hormones, everything may be within acceptable values, but at some level there is still an imbalance, and problems arise because of it.

Slight engorgement of the mammary glands a couple of days before menstruation is normal, but if the chest hurts badly in a week, increases in size, you need to contact a gynecologist and mammologist to rule out another disease.

Rashes on the skin of the face, back and chest can be due to an excess of male sex hormones, which are also in the female body. And it is also better to correct this with a doctor.

It is said that there is also premenstrual depression. This is true?

– This is all PMS. It’s just that some have the syndrome expressed physically, while others psychologically. In my practice, I have never seen such that there was really severe depression, but the decline in hormones can actually intensify the underlying mental illness, which a person does not even know about.

Is PMS a common problem in general?

– It’s hard to say. When patients come to see me, most say they have no complaints. But when I start asking them about their periods, it turns out that they are often in pain, that rashes appear, there is weakness, etc. I think many people simply do not talk about PMS, they get used to the symptoms and do not see them as a problem. It all depends on how much a person loves himself ( smiles ).

How to deal with it? Should PMS Be Treated?

– Of course, it is necessary, in a healthy body there should be no failures.Treatment is prescribed by a gynecologist after blood tests for hormones and a search for the cause of the failure. PMS is usually treated with hormonal drugs, but not always.

For very young girls under 18 years old, we try to prescribe phyto-preparations with phytohormones first, and if they do not give a result within three months, we switch to ordinary hormones.

There is no need to be afraid of hormonal treatment, it is well studied and widely used. The course of such treatment lasts 6 months, after which the drug is canceled, and PMS usually does not return.That is, this is not a problem that has been treated throughout life.

Is it possible to relieve ailments with conventional painkillers?

– It is possible, and many do it, but few do it right. Many patients say they drink pain relievers, but often choose the wrong ones. For example, in cases where there is a slight hormonal imbalance and a lot of prostaglandin is produced, it is better to take non-steroidal drugs – they will quickly relieve and relieve pain. They are usually prescribed a week before menstruation and on the first day, but the woman herself cannot regulate this, you need to do this only with a doctor.Just do not be silent at the reception about ailments.

Why does it hurt for one month and not for the second? This is normal?

– If the month was associated with severe stress, heavy workload, emotional distress, menstruation can indeed be more painful. For example, for athletes during a competition, they can disappear altogether.

As a rule, this process is stable in a healthy woman. If there are drops, you need to look for some kind of malfunction in the body, not necessarily hormonal.

What diseases can make your period more difficult?

– The amount of blood lost can greatly increase due to diseases that disrupt its clotting. Exacerbations of chronic inflammation in the uterus and appendages can also lead to large blood loss and severe pain. But a common cold will definitely not affect the severity of menstruation.

If my period is difficult, can I get sick leave at the clinic? Or is it not considered a malaise?

– Maybe, if you have a diagnosis of “algodismenorrhea” or if you feel so bad that you had to call an ambulance.In the latter case, time off is usually given on the same day on which medical assistance was provided.

PRO SEX, SPORT AND PREGNANCY

Can I have sex during my period?

– This is not a very good time for your sex life. The mucous membrane – the endometrium – is rejected and exposes the vessels, they begin to bleed, that is, a wound surface forms in the uterus, which is very susceptible to infections and bacteria. And blood is a breeding ground for them, so why put yourself at risk? We don’t mess around a lot with a cut finger in water and mud, seal the cut with a plaster, disinfect, and then we can’t close anything.Therefore, the only way out is abstinence.

This is all the more unhygienic, because pieces of the endometrium are also secreted with the blood.

And if you really want to, what is the best way to do it?

– If you really want to, be sure to protect yourself with a condom.

Is it possible to get pregnant by having unprotected sex during your period?

– Theoretically impossible. At this time, there is no egg: it leaves in the middle of the cycle and lives for 3-4 days, and then disappears.Menses start even later. As a result, we do not have an egg. There is no endometrium to which the ovum can attach.

But a sperm cell lives for several days.

– Yes, but the next egg is born on average two weeks after the onset of menstruation, and menstruation lasts an average of 5 days. A sperm won’t last that long.

And if there was some kind of failure and it was formed earlier?

– It’s very unlikely, but in life everything can be (laughs) .

Can my period go even if I get pregnant?

– Sometimes it all depends on the structure of the uterus. It has such a surface that can be rejected while waiting for menstruation. Only it is not the endometrium that is rejected, but the mucous membrane into which the ovum should lie, and a menstrual reaction is obtained. This happens very rarely.

And during the entire pregnancy, there can be no menses for sure, the maximum is the first two months, when the placenta has not yet formed.And then this discharge is very scanty and bears little resemblance to menstruation.

Can you play sports during your period?

– Please, if you’re comfortable. If menstruation is not very strong, does not bother, then why not? And if there is discomfort and pain, why strain yourself?

Is it possible to go to baths and saunas?

– From the hygiene point of view, this is not justified, but high temperatures will not do anything bad to you. Some say that the bloody discharge increases, and this may be because the blood vessels dilate.

Is it possible to swim in a pool, lake, sea?

– Not desirable. It’s like having sex – you put yourself at risk of getting an infection. If this is a critical situation and you specifically waited a year to go to the sea, then, of course, you do not need to spoil your vacation: you can put a tampon and swim with it, but after that immediately take it out and put another one or replace it with a pad, if no longer you will swim. However, you should not do this all the time.

ABOUT HYGIENE

What is the best hygiene product to use?

– Better to use gaskets.Many people don’t like them because there are much more comfortable tampons and menstrual cups, but pads are more physiological.

Menstrual blood should flow out, especially since there are endometrial cells in it. When we put a tampon, it absorbs something and at the same time works like a cork – it does not allow blood and endometrial cells to come out. The uterus contracts and pushes all secretions out of itself, but if they cannot come out, they still have two passages – the fallopian tubes.

The ingress of blood and endometrium into the fallopian tubes can lead to a big problem: the cells of the lining of the uterus can get stuck, settle, begin to develop and cause endometriosis.And there is also a throwing of blood into the abdominal cavity, which is even worse.

Everyone thinks that tampons and bowls make life easier, but they really need to be used in an emergency. Plus, tampons need to be changed more often than pads, but few do.

How often should the gaskets be changed?

– At least 3-4 times a day.

If tampons and pads need to be changed frequently, how do you sleep with them? Get up and change in the middle of the night?

– It is better not to put tampons at night, replace them with pads.But it is no longer necessary to change them by the alarm clock, nothing terrible will happen.

Can a tampon or menstrual cup get lost or get stuck inside?

– Can’t get lost, you can only forget about them. With tampons, this, alas, happens. I have had patients who cried, said that they were dying, that they had terrible discharge with an unpleasant odor, that they had uterine decomposition and cancer, and in the end we found a tampon forgotten for several days.

A tampon can get stuck inside.Sometimes the thread breaks, and sometimes the girl herself is very painful to get it, since its surface can be rough and the walls of the vagina themselves are corrugated. In this case, immediately go to the gynecologist for help.

Can a tampon get into the uterus?

No way. This vagina is extensible and the cervix and cervical canal are very narrow.

How often should you wash yourself during your period? And what?

– You need to wash yourself every day, and it is advisable to do this every time you change the gasket.Of course, this can hardly be done at work, but it is worth washing away whenever possible.

For washing it is better to use not soap, but special means for intimate hygiene – without alkali, based on lactic acid. They do not change the biocenosis in the vagina, and the alkali in the soap can corrode delicate delicate tissues and leave microcracks. And you don’t have to use it every time you wash.

ABOUT ANALYSIS AND PAIN

Why does menstruation depend on when to go for an ultrasound scan of the breast?

– It depends on the hormonal background.During the cycle, changes can occur in the mammary glands, and on the fifth to seventh day of the cycle, the most accurate and correct ultrasound result will be.

Is it possible to take tests during menstruation?

– It is undesirable to take a urine test, but if necessary, it is important to know how to do it correctly. Firstly, you need to wash yourself, and secondly, cover the entrance to the vagina with a cotton swab. Then skip the first portion of urine, the second into the jar, and skip the third. When urination ends, the vagina contracts, which can cause blood to drip into the urine container and ruin the test.

Menstruation very rarely affects a general blood test, but it is better to take tests for coagulation and biochemistry later. And it is worth postponing tests if your period leads you to anemia.

During menstruation, operations and procedures that lead to blood loss should also not be performed, because during this period the blood becomes thinner. The body needs this so that it does not linger in the uterus, does not leave clots.

Is it true that during menstruation it is better to give up painful procedures such as depilation, dental treatment, tattoos, etc.etc.?

– The threshold of sensitivity does not change due to menstruation, just some girls, due to general malaise and PMS, perceive pain more strongly. The teeth should not be treated only if there is bleeding: that is, do not pull out during this period, do not cut the gums, etc.

PRO HORMONAL PREPARATIONS

Is it possible to speed up or postpone periods? For example, if they get on an important trip.

– It is possible, but only with the help of hormonal drugs.If a woman really needs to speed them up, we usually recommend drinking hormonal pills not for three weeks, but for 10 days – and stop. Immediately after this, a menstrual reaction will begin and the next cycle will go.

If you practice this 1-2 times, it will not affect the body in any way, but you cannot do this all the time . In our body, all hormonal systems are connected – the ovaries, thyroid gland, mammary glands, pancreas, adrenal glands, pituitary gland. And if you start experimenting on one, then confusion and hesitation will begin in others, which will definitely affect your general condition.

You can lengthen your period by simply skipping the break between hormones. Let me explain what this means. Hormonal contraceptives usually include 21 tablets of the drug and a few more pacifiers to help girls stay on track. When they take pacifiers, their period begins. And if you skip this stage and after three weeks of hormones start a new pack, there will be no menstruation. Sometimes we advise you to use this technique.

If oral contraceptives suppress ovulation and menstruation becomes, as it were, fictitious, then can you just continue to take pills without interruption and live without menstruation?

– Many doctors are listening and suggesting continuous hormonal therapy.But oral contraceptives suppress only the production of an egg, and the follicle still appears, the endometrium grows. When the latter grows to a certain level, rejection occurs and a menstrual reaction occurs. You can’t do without it. And I would not advise experimenting this way, because sometimes after you stop taking hormones, the cycle can not recover well.

At the international conference, by the way, we were told that they are already working on drugs that completely suppress the production of not only the follicle, but also the growth of the endometrium.

WHY DO YOU NEED MENSTRUATION AT ALL?

If for some reason my periods disappeared for a long time, then when they return, will everything be all right? Will I be able to have children?

– If your period has recovered, you have healed the problem, there will be no damage. But this always needs to be addressed with a doctor.

Can Flo-Type Applications be Trusted for Cycle Accuracy?

– As far as I know, the application looks at several of your cycles and calculates their average duration.And in this case, if you are healthy, their prediction can be trusted.

I am a supporter of such applications, at least they help women a lot at a gynecologist’s appointment: they at least know when they had their last periods.

Is it really necessary to track your periods?

– This is a competent attitude towards yourself. It is important to know the regularity in order to understand that everything is in order with your hormonal system, that there are no failures. And at the reception at the gynecologist you need to know when they were.

Why menstruation at all if I’m not going to have children yet? Is the monthly loss of blood and endometrium somehow justified, or is the body just trying in vain?

– Nature did not ask people if they wanted to have offspring, she simply endowed the body with such a function and a system that provides it. For an egg to appear, the body needs to go through all the stages of the menstrual cycle. And when menstruation begins on time, goes well and ends at a certain age, this is an indicator of a woman’s health.

A woman’s body is completely dependent on hormones, they have a certain connection that provides the functions of other organs. If there were no periods, there would be an imbalance throughout the body. A simple example is menopause. When it comes, the woman quietly collapses, her skin begins to fade, her hair falls out, etc. She has to take hormones.

Is it true that menstruation wears out the body? And they also say that it updates.

– No, it does not wear out or renew anything.This is the same myth as “childbirth rejuvenates”. With menstruation in the body, nothing gets worse or better, it just goes through the necessary physiological processes. This cyclicality helps a woman stay healthy. And if there are irregularities in the cycle, other pathologies may appear.

90,000 is it possible to go to classes and how it can threaten

Can I go in for sports during my period? For some, menstruation is a nightmare, while others do not see them as a reason to reduce physical activity.

A classic example that perfectly demonstrates how sports during menstruation affects the female body are athletes. Due to heavy loads, they suffer from malfunctioning of the thyroid gland.

The fact is that the body must direct all its forces to its own recovery. It is known that the female body is under constant stress due to heavy loads, including physical ones.

Against the background of this condition, a hormonal imbalance develops, which leads to a delay in menstruation.

You should also know that cycle fluctuations occur from the first days after active sports. Sometimes, under conditions of physical activity, the delay is only a few days, but it can also be a week.

It is difficult to talk about the benefits or harms of exercising during your period

Excessive physical activity of a woman almost always becomes a factor that brings menstruation closer. Given the above, many girls should definitely know whether it is possible to play sports before menstruation.It all depends on the individual characteristics of the organism. But practice has shown that it is better to postpone training before menstruation.

It is difficult to talk about the benefits or harms of exercise during your period. It is necessary to understand that each organism is unique and, accordingly, will endure such loads in different ways. But usually it is sport that becomes the cause of irreversible negative changes.

In this situation, there is also the second side of the coin.

The fact is that, depending on their condition, girls can still perform some exercises that will have a good effect on the general physiological state, namely:

  • Nordic walking;
  • swimming;
  • yoga;
  • pilates;
  • stretching.

Under no circumstances should the press be pumped. Intense loads on the abdominal muscles will only worsen the condition. It is recommended to pay more attention to cardio loads. But be that as it may, one must understand that the intensity of any exercise should be reduced.

Intense loads on the abdominal muscles will worsen the condition

Why shouldn’t you go in for sports during your period? There are certain factors in which training will have to be forgotten:

  • high abundance of discharge;
  • the presence of acute pain;
  • feeling unwell;
  • the presence of chronic inflammatory processes.

The last point concerns fibroids and endometriosis. Having these pathologies, even minimal loads during menstruation will negatively affect the female condition.

Some physical activity during menstruation is better not to do:

  • the press cannot be pumped;
  • it is forbidden to use the abdominal muscles;
  • sudden movements are prohibited;
  • is prohibited from lifting weights.

During menstruation, it is better not to do some physical activity

With endometriosis

Is it possible to exercise during menstruation with endometriosis? Endometriosis is a serious pathology and cannot be ignored.

With endometriosis at the beginning of menstruation, you should refrain from sports. Particles of the endometrium, which are part of the secretions, may end up in the peritoneum, which will certainly cause a deterioration in well-being.

With heavy menstruation

In case of heavy menstruation, any physical activity is strictly prohibited. With such an intense form of fluid secretion, a significant decrease in hemoglobin level occurs due to blood loss. Based on this, the body weakens greatly, which increases the state of stress.In such conditions, any physical activity becomes the cause of depletion of the body.

With uterine myoma

With uterine fibroids, sports should not be stopped. On the contrary, if you do the recommended exercises, your general condition can be improved. The only exception is sports during menstruation.

Any physical activity in case of heavy menstruation is strictly prohibited

Myoma refers to chronic pathologies in which there are restrictions on physical activity.In order not to aggravate the situation, it is better to refuse training during menstruation.

Can I train on the first day of my period? Most gynecologists are confident that at the beginning of menstruation, the minimum sports load will help overcome the depressive state. But it is necessary to minimize such loads so as not to increase the discharge and not to provoke pain syndrome.

PMS is considered a rather severe female condition. During this time, beautiful creatures become very angry and irritable.On the other hand, the onset of PMS is not yet a reason to get depressed. There is an exit!

You also need to pay attention to back pain. To relieve the syndrome, there are techniques, the implementation of which will restore the joy of life.

Yoga has a wonderful effect on the body during PMS. In addition to improving physical condition, yoga technique helps to calm the nervous system.

It is possible to alleviate the course of PMS with the help of certain training methods

For training, select:

  • convenient place;
  • comfortable clothes;
  • correct room temperature;
  • permissible load.

Exercising with PMS is the same as exercising during menstruation. The only significant difference is the optimal load. With PMS, this indicator can be increased.

Exercising during menstruation can alleviate this condition. Of course, not all types of exercise will have a positive effect on the body.

What exercises can be done during menstruation:

  • walking;
  • easy run;
  • yoga;
  • water aerobics.

Sports activities during menstruation can alleviate this condition

Can I exercise during my period? During menstruation, you can do physical education, but there are workouts that are recommended to be suspended:

  • swing of the press;
  • exercises that strengthen the abdominal muscles;
  • sharp movements;
  • strength exercises.

In these conditions, the intensity of discharge, pain sensations, a state of general malaise will increase.

Going to the gym during such an “interesting” period is not prohibited. The main thing is to choose an adequate load, which depends on the preparation and general condition.

Cardio is recommended to stabilize circulation, relieve pain, and reduce bloating. You can also use an exercise bike in this situation.

You can exercise during your period

Make a bar

The plank exercise is considered one of the best because it has a complex effect.But it involves performing a load on the abdominal muscles, which is highly undesirable during menstruation.

If the critical days are not accompanied by pain, then the execution of the bar is allowed, but not in the first days. It is also recommended to reduce the duration of this exercise.

Squat

The answer to the question of whether it is possible to squat during menstruation will be categorical – it is impossible. Girls have different views on this. From a purely physiological point of view, squatting during menstruation is highly undesirable.

This exercise puts a lot of stress on the muscles of the lower girdle, which can increase the intensity of the discharge. Moreover, given the degree of stress, squatting can increase or provoke pain.

With menstruation, it is not advisable to do the bar

Stretch

Stretching is considered one of the most suitable exercises for menstruation. The main purpose of the exercise is to prepare the body for further training.

Stretching helps to forget about undesirable sensations in the abdomen.Therefore, if you are interested in the question of whether it is possible to do gymnastics during menstruation, then the answer will be yes.

Light exercise is permissible if nothing bothers you during this period.

Do Pilates

Pilates is considered one of the best sports techniques for menstruation. Thanks to a set of exercises, it is possible to improve the position of body segments in space, which has a positive effect on the activity of internal organs. In addition, exercise significantly improves blood circulation and can relieve cramping and bloating.

Can I work out in the gym during my period? If we talk about the Pilates system, then the gym will be the perfect place to exercise.

Visit the pool

It is better to visit the pool during menstruation when the amount of discharge is less. Swimming helps to reduce spasms.

The pace of swimming is chosen easy. It will become a “pill” for the abdominal muscles, which at the end of menstruation will be severely depleted.

Many girls believe that a tampon is the perfect solution to the problem of menstruation, even when exercising.In reality, this is not the case.

During training, blood rushes to the pelvic organs, and this will certainly affect the intensity of discharge and, accordingly, the load on the tampon:

  1. Under stress, the agent requires more frequent replacement.
  2. Often, oversaturation causes the tampon to increase significantly in size, which makes training inconvenient.
  3. Under conditions of increased load, the tampon may displace.
  4. It is categorically impossible to swim with a tampon, as it accumulates infection due to the ingress of water into it.

Can I exercise during my period? What types to refuse

Can I go in for sports during my period? There are many discussions around this issue. Both prohibition and permission are defended. Menstruation is always accompanied by changes in mood and well-being. PMS pain is present.

However, menstruation is individual in nature, there may not be significant changes at all. The decision to go in for sports or refuse to train during critical days depends on the woman herself, the amount of discharge and the duration of menstruation.

However, it should be remembered that physical activity always changes the course of menstruation for the better or worse.

The usefulness of physical education during menstruation

Physical culture includes a huge number of sports. A woman can train professionally or for the sake of improving her appearance, strengthening her health, and relieving PMS symptoms.

Those sports where weight lifting is provided, heavy physical activity is excluded.It is strictly forbidden to do this during menstruation. Moderate exercise has a beneficial effect on the body.

  • the manifestation of PMS decreases;
  • the muscles of the uterus are strengthened;
  • the tone of the penis increases;
  • the pain symptom is reduced.

Sports on the first and second day of menstruation

At the beginning of critical days, certain physical activities reduce painful sensations, relieve women of discomfort.

Walking is recommended. Most payloads during your period. Blood circulation improves, oxygen supply to tissue cells. The uterus is quickly freed from the endometrium, the discharge during menstruation is moderate.

Strongly prohibited:

  • jump;
  • to pump the press;
  • make turns with the body;
  • pull up;
  • to do aerobics;
  • to lift weights.

Why it is impossible to engage in physical education with menstruation

  • If women have heavy periods every month, exercise and exercise is essential.But they should be completed on the eve of menstruation when acute signs of PMS appear. You should stop exercising during your period.
  • During critical days, women experience a decrease in working capacity, an increase in energy consumption, and increased fatigue. Additional loads, exercise in the gym lead to a deterioration in well-being. Headache, dizziness may appear. Therefore, it is impossible to engage in workouts during menstruation. Pay attention to PMS symptoms.As they may differ in each monthly cycle.
  • The ban on physical labor, training is associated with the risk of leakage. The amount of discharge increases, the hygiene product may not withstand. Incidental situations often appear. The modern world of hygiene products has solved this problem. You can do your favorite sport with a tampon, a menstrual cup, even swim. The pads are also different from those used by our mothers and grandmothers. From this point of view, there are no more prohibitions.The ban on exercising in the gym, the performance of loads is more about well-being. You need to postpone training on simulators.

During menstruation, health exercises should be done, which do not carry a large load, but relieve painful sensations in the lower abdomen, in the lower back well, relieve the manifestations of PMS.

Sports for endometriosis

The disease is characterized by profuse bleeding. Excessive physical exertion on the pelvic organs can cause large blood loss.

However, playing sports between menstruation, on the contrary, has a beneficial effect on the genitals and the state of the female body as a whole. Exercise lowers estrogen levels.

Due to this, the endometrial layer grows more slowly. The load should be given to the body gradually. Start with simple morning exercises:

  • walking in place for 2 minutes;
  • walking in a half-squat;
  • lifting on toes, lowering to the starting position – 10 times;
  • breeding, reduction of legs in a sitting position;
  • Extension Squats.

Finish exercises with moderate jogging or “flip positions”. For example, while lying on your back, raise your legs, touch your head. In this position, blood flow to the brain improves, the production of necessary hormones is activated. Their excessive growth is held back. With the help of physical education, you can reduce the manifestations of the disease or defeat endometriosis altogether.

Sports with uterine fibroids

Myoma is surgically removed in special cases. A neoplasm, with the right approach to treatment, can disappear on its own.

In the recent past, doctors considered fibroids and exercise to be incompatible concepts. Currently, opinions are divided.

It is believed that physiotherapy exercises, light gymnastics in the morning promotes the resorption of the node. The restrictions remain the same. With fibroids it is impossible:

  • twist the hoop;
  • to lift weights;
  • to swing the press when the knot is already there, as a preventive measure, this exercise is considered one of the best;
  • dance;
  • to do warming procedures, use a belt.

Do not perform movements that activate blood circulation. In the period between menstruation, it is recommended to jog and swim.

Sports during menstruation at 13 years old

At the age of 13, some girls are already menstruating. However, it will take about 2 more years until the full cycle is restored. Menstruation can be scanty, profuse. Almost always accompanied by severe pain in the lower abdomen.

Some girls of this age do not go to school during critical days, they spend all this time in bed.Exercise at such an early age during menstruation should be limited.

In physical education lessons, adolescents should be given exemption.

Girls are not allowed:

  • to run;
  • jump;
  • to pump the press;
  • push ups;
  • pull up;
  • make turns with the body, twist the pelvis;
  • rope climbing.

All that is recommended is to walk. Walking in the fresh air improves well-being, reduces pain in the lower abdomen.The girl endures critical days better.

If a teenager is engaged in active sports – volleyball, basketball, aerobics, dancing, tennis, classes should be limited from the first days of menstruation.

However, if the girl feels well, does not suffer from bleeding, her favorite activity should be abandoned on the day when the discharge is most intense.

Healthy exercise

Pilates System. The program is selected individually for each woman, taking into account the characteristics of the body, health status, PMS symptoms, well-being during menstruation.The complex consists of performing elementary stretching, exercises for the upper press.

Simple exercises .

  • Relaxing position – sitting on the floor with raised knees. An inhalation is taken, the abdomen is drawn in, then an exhalation is made with muscle relaxation. The exercise is repeated 5 times.
  • Walking and stretching exercise. Perform in a standing position. Stretch your arms up. Stand up on your toes. In this position, take 10 steps. Repeat the exercise again in 3 sets.
  • The exercise should be performed near a wall. It is necessary to raise your legs up, support the body from the back with your hands. Pose “birch”, but with an emphasis on the wall. Stay in this position for 3 minutes.
  • Exercises rotations are done in a standing position. Hands on the belt, turn the body to the right, left side.
  • Leg swing exercises. With the left hand, touch the right leg in an elevated position. You can touch your knees or socks. Swings are made with legs and arms. Then change to the right arm, left leg.Perform 5 swings with a change. You need to give up training with heavy bleeding.
  • Exercise to reduce uterine spasm. It is necessary to get on all fours, head down. Stay in this position for a few minutes. Exercise allows the muscles of the uterus to relax.

If doing light sports, constant training becomes a woman’s habitual way of life, the nature of menstruation will significantly improve.

Sports during the period

When engaging in your favorite sport during menstruation, you must remember about the characteristics of the female body and your well-being.It is necessary to give up exercise at the slightest deterioration in health.

  • Running. This is a universal sport in which absolutely all the muscles of the body are involved. The abdomen receives a load, the muscles are strengthened, which has a beneficial effect on the entire body. But during menstruation, weakness, dizziness, severe pain in the abdomen may be present. In addition, additional movements increase the amount of monthly discharge. Professional training should be abandoned.And replace the usual running with brisk walking. It is necessary to refrain from running exercise on the treadmill. It is not forbidden to go jogging on the first and last day of menstruation with moderate exertion.
  • Fitness. Fitness includes a set of exercises with effects on different parts of the body. The limitation is relative. You can perform exercises to strengthen the muscles of the arms, legs, neck and refuse to load in the abdomen. In general, fitness raises spirits, spirits, relieves moderate pain.Refuse to exercise should be when the state of health deteriorates.
  • Swimming . There is a conflicting opinion about this sport. With the advent of tampons, menstrual cups, the issue of leakage has been resolved. You can stay in water with a tampon inside the vagina for 20 minutes, a menstrual cup for 45 minutes. To prevent deterioration of health, you can swim for no more than 20 minutes. However, there are some features of doing what you love during your period. Water can reduce the intensity of secretions.But this does not mean that your period is over. Within a day, it will be renewed, with an extension of the term. That is, menstruation will not last 5 days, as usual, but, for example, 7. In general, swimming relaxes the muscles of the uterus, calms the nervous system. One essential rule is that the water is as clean as possible.

These are the main sports in the life of women. Sports such as basketball, volleyball, tennis are carried over depending on how you feel. But what should not be denied is exercises to relax the nervous system.They can be made in unlimited quantities. Among these exercises is yoga.

If you follow the recommendations of specialists, you can not only improve your physical condition, emotional, but also mental. Yoga provides for the simplest exercises, relaxation, transition to a new space. In other words, yoga allows you to escape from pressing problems, pain.

You can do yoga exercises as long as your well-being and desire allows.

There are no direct contraindications for moderate physical activity.There are recommendations on how to do it correctly. Engaging in your favorite sport reduces the manifestations of PMS, reduces abdominal pain, and regulates the monthly cycle.

Opinion of gynecologists

Many doctors agreed that physical activity should be present in every woman’s life. It’s never too late to start.

Correct exercises strengthen muscles, improve metabolism, activate the brain, normalize hormones.

The most elementary thing a woman needs to do is light exercise in the morning, walking instead of using public transport, or driving.

As for the loads directly during menstruation, it is better to refuse them. Bleeding can open at any age. In the presence of gynecological diseases, you need to pay special attention to your body.

How to behave if your period starts at school

When, being in an educational institution, menstruation occurs ahead of time, then there are few joyful reasons, especially if, in addition, the stomach hurts.

However, you will not have to worry if you are fully prepared in advance for the approach of critical days.The most important thing is to keep everything that may be needed at hand, to be fully armed, and even more so not to be afraid to ask for permission to go to the toilet.

Remember that your period came at school – there is nothing terrible and you do not need to be ashamed of it.

If menstruation began in the lesson – there is nothing to worry about

What to do if your period starts at school

Even if parents prepare their daughter in advance for the onset of menstruation, menstruation at a young age is still a strong stressful condition.And this is obvious: yesterday she was careless, and now she needs to accept this and learn to live with this physiology.

It is necessary to adapt to the new situation and it is natural that you cannot be absent from class due to menstruation. You can highlight tips if your monthly discharge began while at school:

  • You need to have a few sanitary napkins with you at all times. In order not to remove them far and they do not lie in different sections of the school bag, there is a special case for pads.They are neat closeable boxes with different designs, somewhat similar to a mirror. Unlike the gasket, you can safely get it out and safely put it in your pocket. And don’t forget to replenish your supply.
  • If suddenly the menstruation is unexpected and the pads were not with you, you can ask a close classmate, do not be afraid to go to the class teacher or go to the nearest pharmacy (and they are currently within walking distance) and purchase hygiene products.

You can ask a classmate or teacher for a gasket

  • If you have neither pads nor money with you, you need to seek help from a nurse at a medical center. The paramedic will offer sterile gauze wipes, they are certainly not so comfortable, but they will still protect for a while.
  • Toilet paper rolled in several layers can help for a while. You can also use a handkerchief.
  • During the first menstrual hours, uterine discharge is weak and usually a pantyliner will suffice from leakage.Therefore, it is better to choose a panty liner that has an absorption area of two drops. On everyday days, such daily routines will not be a hindrance, and in case of unexpected periods, they will come in handy.
  • It is necessary to purchase special wet wipes for female intimate hygiene. They can be used to gently clean the crotch in the washroom.
  • Another not unimportant tip: always keep spare replacement panties in the inner pocket of your backpack.

It should be remembered that menstruation is a completely normal phenomenon faced by the female sex and there is absolutely no need to be upset, panic or angry about it.No one will even suspect what is with the girl at this time, if the behavior is normal, and this is not a reason not to go to school with menstruation.

On average, the menstrual period takes about ten years of a woman’s life and it is better to put up with this thought. It is too long to spend this period in a bad mood and give up the usual things.

Hygiene features during menstruation

On critical days, the uterine pharynx opens slightly to facilitate the outflow of the endometrial layer of the uterus and blood.This is a favorable environment for the reproduction and penetration of pathogenic microbes.

Therefore, it is very important to carry out regular hygiene procedures: washing with hypoallergenic products, to make frequent replacement of hygiene products, about once every three to four hours.

Wash your hands before changing the pad

It is recommended to wash as soon as possible when changing a hygiene product. Before changing the agent used, wash your hands thoroughly and always with soap.Washing is carried out using certain gels that have a neutral pH and do not contain various fragrances and fragrances.

Soap, even for babies, is not recommended because it breaks the acidity inside the vagina and can irritate the mucous membranes. When washing the perineum, you need to direct the water flow from the pubis from top to bottom to the anal passage, but not vice versa.

After washing, you just need to dry the genitals with a towel or toilet paper, removing excess moisture.The girl’s towel should be personal for such procedures.

If a girl during her period due to the school schedule is unable to provide herself with washing during the day, then she must still wash at least twice a day.

You should not visit steam rooms, baths, saunas, take hot baths during such a period, because high temperature conditions can provoke increased bleeding.

As far as possible, try to go to the toilet more often so that excretions come out along with urination.

You can’t bathe during your period

How to choose hygiene products

There are three variations of feminine hygiene products in the menstrual cycle:

  • pad with cotton or helium filling;
  • tampon;
  • menstrual cup or cup.

The simplest and most convenient hygiene items to use are pads. They are made from absorbent raw materials with a soft coating. Spacers vary in thickness, width and size.Their main purpose is to absorb the monthly fluid that comes out through the vagina. The main advantage of using pads is good absorption and health safety when used correctly.

Tampons – like absorbent pads, vary in size and absorbency. They are a small cylinder with a strong cord at the other end for removal from the vagina.

Replacement should be done at least once every three hours, otherwise toxic shock syndrome may occur due to the multiplication of bacteria.

Also, if the tampon is inside the body for a long time, the natural balance of vaginal lubrication may be disturbed.

Special hygienic tampons for young schoolgirls appeared on the market of goods. However, an improperly selected tampon can lead to rupture of the hymen in non-sexually active girls.

Girls can also use tampons, but it is better after consulting a gynecologist

If a virgin girl wants to start using tampons, it is recommended to study the structure of the hymen by consulting a gynecologist.The doctor, after conducting an examination, will advise which tampons you can use.

To avoid the appearance of a “greenhouse effect” when using panty liners during menstruation, girls should avoid beautiful openwork synthetic panties and use natural fabrics such as cotton. Also, underwear should be of a classic cut, neither “thongs” nor “thongs” are welcome on such days.

Can I go to physical education

The beginning of the monthly discharge at school will not interfere with physical education in any way.On the contrary, moderate exercise helps to reduce abdominal pain, relax the muscles of the uterus, and also promote a smoother course of the menstrual cycle. But you should tell the physical education teacher about your period.

Since on such days it is forbidden to do jumps, strength exercises, sharp elements, swing the abdominal muscles, perform push-ups.

It is recommended to do a slow warm-up and not a fast jog.

When playing sports, it is necessary to monitor the state of health, if the deterioration has begun sharply, it is required to stop exercising and agree to pass the standards on another day.

It is very important that physical activity on these days is moderate

How to tell a teacher about your period

On critical days, I do not want to initiate anyone into my intimate life, especially this is very annoying for a teenage girl who needs to be told about this to the teacher. And if the physical education teacher is also a male, then many girls prefer not to go to school with periods than to explain the reason for their condition.

As mentioned earlier, doing moderate sports has a positive effect on a girl’s health these days.But if suddenly classes take place in the pool or today the delivery of speed standards is scheduled, the girl faces problems.

However, it is solved quite simply by contacting the school nurse. The nurse will give an exemption from physical education. It should be noted that the health worker may ask to see the pad to verify the girl’s words.

If at the moment the medic is not on the spot, you should go to the class teacher or another female teacher, explain the situation to her.

It is easier for an adult woman to talk to a man than a teenage girl. Of course, a young girl will feel uncomfortable, but this is easier to do than talking and explaining everything to a stranger.

This video will tell you what to do if your period started at school:

When is it recommended to stay at home

Many women have headaches or stomach pains during their menstrual period. Women who undergo this procedure on a monthly basis know how and what to do and how to quickly cope with pain.Slightly more difficult for adolescent girls who have recently started menstruating and have not established a cycle.

If the discharge is too abundant, the mother may consider it necessary to stay at home and wait out one or two days, usually the period is heavy at the beginning, then the discharge decreases.

In case of severe abdominal pain, you also need to stay at home. If the pain is bearable, you can massage the abdomen or temples with a headache lying on your back. It is recommended to take the pose of an embryo, while tucking your legs under you.

This position allows you to relax the muscles of the uterus and reduce spasm. For the best effect, you can put cold on the stomach for 15 minutes, it narrows blood vessels. You can take a shower to relax the nervous system. In addition to relaxation, it relieves stress and relieves spasms.

If you have abdominal pain, you can stay at home

Pain during menstruation will help relieve medications: antispasmodics or pain relievers, such as: No-shpa, Analgin, Spazmalgon, Paracetamol, Ketanov, Ibuprofen and others.

After drinking one pill, the pain should subside within a quarter of an hour, but if the pain persists, you can take another pill, but no more.

It is also worth taking a sedative, which helps to relax the nervous system and helps relieve spasms. These include: Valerian, Motherwort, Glodu tincture.

Answers Mail.ru: Do I need to go to physical education during menstruation?

Exercise during menstruation increases bleeding.Do you need it?

You can, I speak like a former sportswoman! )))) Just don’t need to do abdominal exercises!

It is possible, but it is better not necessary. I myself go to the gym for fitness, during these days I don’t do it at all.

Can I go in for sports these days and everything is fine with me (sometimes my stomach hurts and it stops) Maybe your friend hurt something, it’s worth going to the doctor.

and I remember very well from school that they were always released if you have your period. I remember we used it, we didn’t want to do it, no one checked it anyway.)))

The structure of the body is different. You can walk. Only, really, you don’t need to run a lot, no exercises for the press and squats. And so … everything will be OK.

is impossible! categorically! in the human body, 6-8 percent of the blood by weight, so calculate – if the student is 12 years old and her weight is 40 kg, and during her period, about 250 grams comes out. blood … There is a huge load on the young organism !!!! and playing sports on critical days, so to speak, leads to problems in the future!

Of course you can! How else? It is true what other people wrote in the comments (no need to do abdominal exercises and strain too much).The main thing is not to leak, otherwise the whole class will laugh. Sorry for grammatical errors 🙂

No, but if the teacher does not excuse you from classes, go to the doctor, write out a certificate, here I have such a certificate from the 7th grade … It says that the menstrual cycle is very painful, etc., etc. that the type is not allowed before classes during these days .. and that’s it …

No, in 1) more blood will flow out anyway (because you are straining) in 2) If you nevertheless decided to study and you are not afraid of blood loss and painful sensations, then you know at any moment you can leak and what? The whole class will laugh at you, but you want that? And as an experienced gynecologist, I will say that it is better to write a note stating that you are withdrawing from classes and your body will be better.

No! I also had, 13 November

Some kind of nonsense. Whether it is possible or not. The student is obliged to attend the lesson! There are no regulatory documents on this issue! The load just needs to be reduced! The child can study theory. The parent writes a letter to Cl. hands-> cl.

hands certify with a signature -> gives it to the teacher f. j. Usually pupils are embarrassed to talk about it. Here mother and cell should have a conversation. hands (woman). And in the letter, write specifically, and not feel bad, etc.d.

But the letter does not give guarantees and is not an exemption from the lesson! Exemption is given by the doctor !!!

The same question, well, how not to sit down ?? The physical education instructor forces us, well, if the physical education instructor (chka) is a woman, then it is very good,

If you feel good, then why not.

But if menstruation is painful, then in no case! All women have a different body, if you go in for sports and you have good immunity, then these days sports will go without problems, but if you are rather weak these days, then refrain from sports.

I am now in grade 10, the physical education teacher is a woman. She does not understand at all that there are painful periods and makes her study in a physical education lesson. And before, a man taught, he understood everything perfectly and treated such matters with respect and understanding.

Critical days. What can be done on critical days

Exercise during your period? You’re out of your mind! On these days, it is advisable to move less in general, showing with all your appearance to others that you are a crystal vessel and require an extremely careful attitude.

But this is necessary, what an injustice – physical education, as luck would have it, three times a week . And fizrukami (including women, yeah) more and more often come across those who do not understand and do not sympathize. Any “I can’t today” or “my stomach hurts” is not accepted.

Can I exercise during my period?

Does this sound familiar? Who is right in it and who is greatly mistaken? Are critical days a good enough excuse to get out of physical education? To whom and in what cases should I run for a certificate?

The most knowledgeable person in matters of puberty in girls knows the answers – the chief freelance pediatric gynecologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus Oksana Ivanishkina-Kudina :

Never in the history of medicine has menstruation been considered a disease.This is an absolutely natural, physiological state of the body of a girl, girl and woman at a certain period of time.

In the vast majority of cases, menstruation is not accompanied by any peculiarities (for example, severe pain, excessive discharge, etc.

), which would limit the girl’s activity in everyday life.

This means that bed rest and a wet towel on the forehead are canceled during critical days. You can (and should!) Lead a normal life, including physical activity: walking with friends in the park, riding a bike, rollerblading or ice skating. And even daily runs (if they are in your plans) have no reason to postpone until later.

But from increased physical exertion in the first two days of menstruation really should be abstained, warns Oksana Ivanishkina-Kudina. At this time, it is definitely not worth setting records for the number of body lifts, high jumps and kilometers covered over rough terrain.

Anything that requires increased endurance, concentration and tension from you (especially in the abdominal cavity and pelvis) should be minimized in the first two days of active menstruation. This also includes 90,039 competitions, passing standards, training in the gym. If you don’t want to miss them, at least don’t be too zealous.

The rule “The main thing is not victory, but participation” is especially relevant in this case.

At this point do not hesitate to approach the teacher or coach and explain the situation. In the overwhelming majority of cases, physical instructors still get into the position and do not require special activity. Don’t you want or can’t explain anything? Then you will have to enlist the support of a school nurse or pediatrician at the clinic.

In special cases (when the onset of menstruation is accompanied by excessive discharge or severe pain), they can issue a certificate of exemption from physical education.

If necessary, the pediatrician will also prescribe medications that will quickly bring you back to normal and remove the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (pulling pains, weakness, dizziness).

Gynecologist’s advice

By the way, you yourself can take some measures to avoid (or minimize) discomfort during the critical days . Oksana Ivanishkina-Kudina advises:

  • Two to three days before the expected start of menstruation , temporarily remove from the menu products that contain serotonin: smoked meats, chocolate, strong tea and coffee. A decrease in serotonin hormone levels relieves discomfort in the early days of menstruation.
  • At the same time you can start drinking a decoction of raspberry leaves (1 tsp for a glass of boiling water, leave for five minutes). It is good because it reduces the abundance of secretions and has a pronounced antispasmodic effect.
  • Severe pain can be relieved by lying for 1-1.5 hours in the “embryo” position (on the side, tucking the knees to the chest) or on the stomach, placing a pillow.
  • Sometimes an ordinary heating pad saves from pain , if you put it on the lower abdomen for 5-10 minutes.

But what you definitely shouldn’t do is drink painkillers according to the principle: the stronger the better. They do not affect the mechanism of pain in any way, but simply “turn off” the areas in the brain responsible for its perception.

Pain during menstruation occurs due to the pressure difference between the uterus and the spasmodic cervix. As soon as the spasm goes away, the cervix opens and the pain disappears. So in this case, antispasmodic drugs are effective.

But which ones and how to drink them should be decided by the pediatrician.

Periods and physical education | Children | Children’s health

  • The daughter is almost 12 years old. The first menstruation began yesterday. Today we missed a physical education lesson at school. I remember that during my studies the girls did not go to physical training on critical days. Is exercise during menstruation harmful? My daughter wants to go to the gym, but I’m worried and don’t want to allow it. They do exercises there and on the press and run for a long time and more….Mothers of grown girls, how are you doing with physical training?
  • Is it convenient to wear a pad on the gym? I understand an adult aunt with a tampon can run, but frolic with a pad … bue
  • Yes, I think so too. But I know that girls from the class (there are still few of them) go to physical training with their months. And the physical education instructor was dissatisfied today, muttered something to his daughter.
  • Many gynecologists treat sports during m. Extremely negatively.
  • Do not walk if it hurts or leaks heavily, but in general there is no harm, just inconvenience.
  • A physical education teacher, a man, asked to write him a note in such incidents. What is better to write in it?
  • I remember at our school they wrote – temporary release. well, like, please temporarily release … something like this …
  • , I remember in my school years we had a physical education teacher, a man – no questions, he silently nodded and did not touch the words “today”, and then there was a woman, she swore and yelled every time that would make our schedule funny right, you might think shortly, write to him that today you are asking to be exempted from classes due to physiological malaise
  • in our school wrote in the journal “php”, the physiological reason.They said in words “I can’t today”, that was enough. It seems to me that it will be better if you find out this question yourself with the teacher. girls may be ashamed. Nefig girls to instill complexes that they have something wrong !!
  • our physical education teacher – a man told me so from time to time, about the schedule))) I had my period for two weeks …
  • At our institute, every month a girl could miss 2 classes (that is, a week).
  • Well, I myself have always walked, the main thing is a reliable gasket, and there are no problems with that right now.Well, and well-being, of course.
  • and one girl had a cycle of 21 days. she also shook her nerves …
  • It is better to exclude excessive physical activity during menstruation, because of them menstruation can intensify and become very abundant. If the physical education teacher is sane, you can walk on it during your period, do light exercises. But jumping, sprinting and the like to skip.
  • Mine is also 12, but her period has already started a year ago. Moreover, the cycle is still being established, about 21 days, i.e.That is, they do not have time to end, as they will begin again soon. Yes, and the months themselves for 7 days – this is probably in me. Well, our physical education instructor turned out to be normal in this regard, lacks questions and does not mark anything at all. At first I passed notes through the classroom, and then I stopped. Well, we were probably lucky. By the way, in my school past, the physical education teacher put the letter “b” directly in the magazine when the girls had their periods. It was terribly inconvenient to go to him and say that I had “b”. And the boys in the magazine spied on who already had a “b” and who didn’t have it yet.Here is such a madhouse. And on the subject – mine does not go to physical training during menstruation.
  • I don’t understand, to be honest, but what for in general should I put any notes in the magazine? nonsense, some
  • no, ours was just afraid, it seems. and the fluorine was a physical education instructor, who replaced him – he also said “yes, yes, good” to the words “today is not allowed” and there was a feeling that he perceives it as a crystal vazudaaa, and with a woman physical education instructor I had scandals first on the topic: to skip and how much – 1 or 2 lessons a week (since it was already grade 10 – I was cursing myself) and I was threatened with twos and calling my parents and tyda – yeah, schaz, I ran away during such a period to screw up the cross
  • Where do you get such gynecologists ?! Most just read (and quite rightly) menstruation is never a disease or an obstacle to ordinary life, including physical culture.If a girl has severe pain or too many months, that’s another question.
  • I don’t understand that either. But there was such a fact.
  • in short, there were specific cockroaches in humans, uh-huh, but those around him suffered
  • We are still far from menstruation, but I know for sure that playing sports during menstruation can provoke the development of endometriosis. Therefore, it is better not to risk it.
  • On the contrary, it is useful, accelerates blood and dilates blood vessels. Relieves spasms.When playing sports, periods are less painful. The only negative is that you can stay with stains. But if it doesn’t flow like a stream, then I’m only FOR the load.
  • And our old goat wrote boldly on the page of the MONTHLY magazine. Until the parents complained about him to the director.
  • In my youth, a physics teacher, a girl of 24 years old, kept a calendar where she noted who and when, and if in doubt, ask the nurse for confirmation
  • Not recommended in the early days.
  • Itself will decide how best for her, and I will approve any of her decisions (fortunately, the child is not inclined to mow).In principle, I don’t see a big problem with modern thin pads (and in my opinion the loads they have are not the ones to harm), but if the daughter is uncomfortable, then maybe not only physical education, but also skip school.
  • How, then, is humanity still alive? We must run away from the tiger, bring water and dig up a garden, this is a sport, and she has her period, it’s impossible! Better to eat the tiger now than endometriosis later.
  • Menstruation began at 14, now, about a year and 3 months, even the cycle has already been established.The first 2-3 cycles I went to physical training only if I felt good and missed swimming too. And now he goes there and there, there are no more problems.
  • why b, not m
  • How do you go swimming? Really with tampax? I thought girls shouldn’t use them.
  • These are some “myths of ancient Greece”! Why not something ?! Another thing is that not all girls manage to insert them correctly. I didn’t manage to do it for a long time. And then, somehow, right away, and it turned out. The daughter uses it sometimes, she is 14.
  • because of my health, I visited many gynecologists, among them there were also doctors, not a single doctor told me to go in for sports during m, including a doctor in a sports club (not a gynecologist). Well, maybe I just had a case of pain and profuse, so such recommendations were specific for me.
  • Yes, with OB mini, inserts a tampon after a shower and takes it out immediately after a workout. She herself learned very quickly, but she was not 11 at the beginning of her period, but 14, maybe just older.Her father is a gynecologist, and I myself talked with him what is allowed and what is not, he confirmed that it is possible, will the father of his daughter allow harmful or forbidden things?
  • But no one, except the physical education instructor, will say this. Maybe “sick” meant
  • I do not have a daughter, but about myself I can say that I have never missed physical training because of my period. Well, this business did not bother me at all, no painful sensations … And now I go to fitness, but I try not to swing my abs, and throw my legs behind my head in a prone position (if on yoga)))) But I remember my cousin – she started how suffer from 13 years old, so still (at 35) suffers, then abundant menstruation up to hemostatic preparations, then painful..Probably, everything is individual … ..
  • according to this logic, you can be absent from the lesson at all (I was sick), but we, I remember, were present, we just didn’t do nifig
  • This is my sore subject. From the age of 13, as they started pouring, and until the age of 30 they poured, and even for a week at least, my stomach was terribly sick. The physical education instructor was understanding, put it in the magazine. But it was very uncomfortable, I thought they wouldn’t believe that the week was pouring in. And even the class teacher allowed, according to a note from my mother, to skip school for 1 day.Lilo so that she did not have time to change the gaskets, the toilets were without stalls with doors – common – this is a tinny to change the gaskets with everyone. God forbid anyone like that.
  • +100. If the state of health is normal, there is no discomfort – I see no reason to sit on the bench. It’s another matter if it’s bad, weak, etc. Then it’s more useful to sit out.
  • During menstruation, the muscles are in a more relaxed state, so there is a risk of injury. True, this is more likely with any serious or professional stress.I know this in my specialty, but I don’t know from the side of gynecology.
  • We have a female physical education teacher, indignantly told her daughter that she didn’t know what a “physiological reason” was. That’s because .. I wonder if there are normal workers, sorry, physical education at school? I had to complain to the cool girl, now I just write in a note “my stomach hurts.”
  • My daughter during her periods (unless, of course, they are very painful) will go to physical training and sections as usual.Because modern gaskets are quite convenient and do not interfere with classes, and why something needs to be limited there, I don’t understand.
  • I also suffered until I gave birth to my daughter. Now nothing hurts at all
  • we were taken to the nurse to show that gasket. True, this teacher was fired a month later. I had a good release)
  • You can’t! Heavy bleeding may begin, but in general, how can anyone. We had a girl in the section – she was smeared for 2 days and that’s it, she calmly ran 8 km these days.Became an athlete – usually they become. True, he cannot have a child yet.
  • Yes, they did not live to see the moment when endometriosis makes itself felt. They didn’t worry about the birth rate either. Lucky – lucky, no – unlucky.
  • There are no contraindications, in fact, if your periods are not painful.
  • Just do not forget to ask your daughter if she is comfortable with it, is it pleasant to “fill up” (and playing sports inevitably leads to increased bleeding), and then run to the school toilet to change the gaskets without the opportunity, sorry, to wash? And not all exercises are shown when a teenager is menstruating.
  • +1, if not abundant and painful, no problem.
  • Almost the same thing I had.
  • Still, 2 days of daub and that’s it? Doesn’t she have an endometrium in her uterus? I would like to ask where this girl’s mother looked, the child clearly has problems with hormones. About sport – you are life!
  • I also heard this from doctors. And at a time when it was necessary to run away from tigers, what do you think the life expectancy was? And its quality, by the way, endometriosis does not always affect conception, so one does not interfere with the other, some have no idea whether they have endometriosis or not.
  • When I was studying at the institute, a disaster struck my classmate. It was my girlfriend, we were all very worried: she went to a disco during her period, danced all night. Uterine bleeding began, 2 weeks in the Department of Gynecology. Something like this. In general, not everything is clear.
  • For ballet dancers, when menstruation begins, they give three days of rest. They do not work on these days.
  • Do not go to physical training during menstruation. From physical exertion, menstruation (amount of blood) becomes abundant, and this is not a zer gut.
  • on this topic I want to ask. and now girls whose periods begin, what do they use – pads or tampons? I read in the top about pads, but young girls can’t have tampons or what? We grew up when there were no tampons
  • How would it be better to use gaskets. Tampons are a last resort (I don’t even know what kind of case), so as not to provoke the growth of pathogenic flora in the vagina (why girls need it).
  • This is the case…. week at sea, and then menstruation.Well, it will be a shame. I’m also thinking about trying tampons (probing the soil) if this happens.
  • Oh! We made a schedule at school. Here’s the truth. They came to the nurse, she checked the presence of menstruation (yes, yes!) And noted in her special journal
  • In my youth I heard like someone managed to deprive themselves of their virginity with a tampon. True or false – I don’t know. I will buy my daughter exclusively pads. And I use them myself. I heard about tampons that their constant use harms the body.How exactly, I don’t remember. Like all the blood does not come out, somewhere there stagnates and you py. A tampon is needed, IMHO, like an ambulance, in exceptional cases, when you need to dress so that the strip will be visible.
  • I buy my only gaskets. And I use them myself. In early youth I tried tampons, but did not like it. And let them say that everything will be fine with tampons, but I will stay with my opinion – girls do not need tampons.
  • +1, I also tried it, I still remember)) Also for the gaskets, especially since they are now not the same as they were before))
  • Ah, really … Although, I remember at my seaside somehow at a young age these days began, because of the climate change they were very short and meager (so, just put a tick that was =).Apparently, the body wanted to swim =)
  • nd, I don’t even know how to comment on censorship. It’s necessary to hate children so much and don’t believe them. They believed us (the gymnast only threatened) and somehow there was no desire to abuse
  • I will certainly ask) But I think that she will inherit the features of menstruation from me and just as I will not see problems. And what and by whom is shown, forgive me forgive me)
  • And I can’t imagine how to live without tampons. Does it get dirty there and walk like that all day? Problems from tampons I start only when on vacation (if the conveniences are not good enough) I use them around the clock, and if I take them away at home, then it’s okay.Moreover, with tampons and secretions in less, and ends more quickly. True, I still recommend pads to my daughter for a start. And then we will see.
  • Yes, there were practically no menstruation then – there was either pregnancy or lactational amenorrhea, and how ovulation was restored – again pregnancy, etc.
  • and do not dry tampons? When I tried to use tampons, they dried it terribly, and I tried tampax, obi and some other 3 brands. irritation on the skin from the pads – I switched to the menstrual cup now, for the third year I have been a bastard – cleanliness, beauty, you can swim … but the girls will definitely not do it – it can damage the hymen
  • personally, the gynecologist told me not to play sports for the first three days, then the trainer * already in my adult age) said, on critical days you stay at home, the load goes to the organ, which is now bleeding.And she herself is aware that sports in China is not good. We did not go to physical training during menstruation.
  • Our class teacher “kept records”, otherwise there were amateurs under this pretext not to go to physical education at all
  • and we lied to black) so I understand the teacher.
  • They dry, but if you wear them only outside the house, and take them off at home, then it’s okay. Then I have very heavy periods, without a tampon, a thin pad with a maximum volume can flow in 3 hours for me, and a tampon + pad – you can move around with ease.
  • I also bought a cup, such a thrill !!!
  • I ran myself, everything is fine. Reliable pad and fine. Do not be afraid)
  • This is not an indicator. I have a friend who always has her period for 2 days and is not strong. 2 children.
  • +1, this is just a feature of the organism.
  • You are very naive, she can even inherit them from her great-grandmother.
  • are not harmful to the school level, but these days it can pull the stomach, ache in the head, general weakness and this affects safety in the gym plus a thicker gasket is still an additional detail, not the most sportingly comfortable on a day when it flows strongly, you can skip if there is no harm in general
  • when we were growing up, there were no pads – cotton wool and rags, tampons for everybody, but if you manage and it is convenient – you can even go to the pool
  • Mine only use pads.
  • I looked at school according to my well-being. Sometimes my stomach hurt so badly that I had to not go to school. If everything is ok, and it was not the first day, I went to physical training. There, too, depending on what kind of physical: if you pass the cross, it is better not. And on the days when the pioneer ball was played, you can also play. Mom always wrote a note about “temporary release.”

90,000 “This is a kind of catharsis.” Stories about menstruation and everything connected with them

“I can’t get out of bed, I can’t move, move, think, breathe”

Sasha Sivkova, 24 years old

– I started my period at age 12 …Then I was visiting my grandmother with an overnight stay. In conversations with my mother, this topic was raised more than once, she said that menstruation is normal. I didn’t have any pads with me then, and my grandmother gave me some rags. I was like, “Rags ?! And what, now every month? ” I called my mom, she said “Cool! Well done congratulations!” She immediately called my dad, and he also congratulated me. In general, it was positive, a new stage in life and all that. Then I came home, my mother taught me how to use pads.I felt great, nothing hurt. But after three years, my periods became very painful. The gynecologist said that this is normal. Now they are held in different ways. With my physical activity and observance of some rules in nutrition, they pass tolerably. But if I relax, it can be tough. Then I cannot get out of bed, I cannot move, move, think, breathe. I just want to die. A couple of times I wanted to call an ambulance. I never talked about it at work. It’s not that I’m shy, I’m just lucky.And menstruation falls either on weekends or begins in the evening. I will suffer at night and in the morning I quietly crawl out. At school, I had to speak in physical education. The teacher perceived this normally and allowed us to just sit on the bench, but in the choreography lessons we were still forced to study. The choreography is a white leotard and a white skirt. God forbid something happens, it will be very embarrassing. But the coach did not take our problems seriously and laughed at it in every possible way. He said it was just menstruation.

Elena Sandakova – Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, FDPO PSMU named afterAcademician EA Wagner, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor:

There should be no pain during menstruation. There may be a feeling of slight discomfort, but if a woman takes pain pills or antispasmodics, this is a manifestation of some kind of pathology. Pain during menstruation is called dysmenorrhea. It is primary and secondary. Secondary dysmenorrhea occurs as a result of the disease. Most often it is endometriosis, fibroids, endometrial polyps, or an inflammatory process. Feeling slightly uncomfortable is normal.The pain should not interfere with the ability to work or condition the intake of analgesics.

“This is a natural process, and they react as if poison is running out of my vagina”

Kristina Rozhkova, 22 years old

– My mother and I have friendly relations, but when my period first began , for some reason I was very shy and hid it. I was then 14 years old, and my first period went without pads, because I did not know where to get them, and I was afraid to tell my mother about it.It seems we didn’t discuss this at all. Although my period was about to start, there was no conversation about it. I think this is very sad. Later I found out that my mother at one time also hid her period for a long time. Now I am studying at the university. I have no problems with menstruation, at this time I feel good, and nothing hurts. A couple of times it was a little pulled, and that’s it. But if I had a stomach ache, I would take time off. And I wouldn’t work in a place where day off is denied if I feel bad during my period.I can tell you three stories. When I was in 8th grade, I once came to visit my friend Lena. I was just starting my period and threw the used pad in the bin. Suddenly her angry mother comes, like a furious tiger, and says: “Lena, why are you throwing the pads in the trash bin?” I don’t understand, I ask “What’s wrong?”, And they tell me that Uncle Seryozha is Lena’s stepfather, he will see! I said nothing, because this is Lena’s mother and they have their own family showdown.But it just killed me. Uncle Seryozha, Lena’s stepfather, will see the gasket, and it will simply destroy his world! This is the first story.

The second happened a little later, in the ninth grade. I asked my stepfather to buy pads, he was like: “no, no,” but my mother generally arranged: “What do you mean? Sasha will go buy you pads? Are you out of your mind ?! ” I’m like, “What’s wrong?” This is my natural need, what’s the problem? In general, my mother is a fairly adequate person, but such things are still a stumbling block in her head.There was also a case in the 11th grade. My company and I went to a friend’s dacha. From time to time his mother also went to this dacha. There were several girls in our company, I had my period and someone else. I was told that his mom is pretty weird. I threw the pads in the bin, it was wrapped up. A week and a half later, this woman brought this used pad to the city and made a scandal to a friend about “why is it in the trash?” And where it should be, I do not understand! I had to wrap it in ten bags, wrap it in paper, tie it with a ribbon and hide it somewhere far, far away so that no one will ever know that I have periods ?! In my opinion, it is a tough thing when women react in this way to what is happening with them too.Probably it is necessary to engage in sex education from childhood, so that there is no such garbage. This is a natural process, and they react as if poison is running out of my vagina.

“I’m scared for life”

Maria (name has been changed), 35 years old

– When I was 28 years old, I used tampons during my period because it is convenient. Five years later, at a scheduled appointment, a gynecologist discovered that I had cervical dysplasia. This is a disease in which the structure of the cervical epithelium changes, it can lead to oncology.Nothing bothered me, or I was just inattentive to myself. When the gynecologist found out about my love for tampons, she swore a lot and said that they should be used for a maximum of a couple of hours in case of emergency. She said that it is unhealthy and should not be used all the time. I underwent an operation to conize the cervix, which is cutting off a piece of tissue. The first time was not removed enough, and had to do a second operation. The cervix has been shortened, and if I get pregnant, there will be problems with bearing the baby.A short cervix is a risk factor for premature birth. When I was diagnosed, I was shocked. It was necessary to go with tests to the oncology center for confirmation, and there is a very oppressive atmosphere. Until I got the result that it was not cancer, I simply did not live. Then, when they said that they would need to have an operation, I was in a panic. Now, of course, I only use gaskets, although this is terribly inconvenient. I’m scared for the rest of my life.

Elena Sandakova:

– You can use pads, tampons.The main thing is not to forget to change them. A tampon, if used correctly and remember to change, should not cause inflammation. It’s another matter if the inflammation is already there. If left untreated and tampons are used, it will worsen the condition of the cervix. But for the tampon itself to cause inflammation – no, this cannot be. It is important to observe hygiene, wash yourself at least twice a day.

As for the menstrual cups, my patients do not use them. I know that there is such a method, but I have no experience of observing such patients.Menstrual blood should flow. If it stagnates in the vagina for a long time, the blood becomes infected and microbes begin to multiply. They can cause inflammation of the cervix and endometrium. It is important that the blood does not stagnate, so that it is always dry and clean.

“I perceive menstrual blood as a mysterious phenomenon”

Anastasia (name has been changed)

– I really love my periods. I am sure that many girls will be surprised. What is the beauty of menstruation? Someone will say: in the renewal of the body, in its preparation for the next cycle, which may become pregnant.Yes, it is, but I like something else. In menstruation, I like the menses themselves, that is, the blood. She is a part of the flesh of my body that I will never see, study, and even cannot touch. What is inside us – tissues and organs, as well as their functioning – is a magical secret. And I perceive menstrual blood as a mysterious phenomenon. I like the consistency of the menstrual flow, the smell. I like the state of menstruation. I have no pain during menstruation, there is no discomfort.And I don’t know what PMS is and I don’t believe in its existence. It seems to me that this is an invention of lazy, capricious and irritable girls who want to justify their unbalanced character. In short, menstruation is cool, and we women are lucky in this.

Elena Sandakova:

The highest manifestation of the viability of the reproductive system is the onset of pregnancy. And your period is one of the indicators that the system is working properly. Normal menstruation is characterized by several parameters:

– cyclicity (a normal menstrual cycle lasts from 24 to 35 days, it is considered from the first day of menstruation to the first day of the next menstruation),

– crop loss (normally it should not be more than 80 ml, if the woman loses more blood and may develop anemia or iron deficiency over time.If a woman uses two packs of pads for menstruation, menstruation is either abundant or long),

– duration (normally it should be from 3 to 7 days).

Normal menstruation is an indicator of health and cyclical processes that occur in the reproductive system. The reproductive system functions from menarche (first menses) to menopause. Normally, menstruation should occur at 12-15 years old. If there are no menstruation at the age of 16, this is already a pathology, if before 12, this is also not very good.And they should end at 45-55 years old. If they end earlier, this is a problem, and it is imperative to see a doctor. If they end later, this may also indicate some problems. Now the average age of menopause (the last menstrual period in a woman’s life) is 51 years.

“After the first injection of testosterone, my period didn’t start anymore”

Nikita, transgender man, 26 years old

– My period started at the age of 14. It’s late enough, but it was not a surprise.Then I took it quite calmly. It’s unpleasant, of course, but you can live. I was very pissed off by the mother’s reaction, as she immediately told all her friends about it. Then it seemed to me something very humiliating. I tried to ignore them, like everything else that caused dysphoria. Even if there were pains, I simply burdened myself more with work to distract myself. Of course, my period gave me physical discomfort. For example, you need to wear pads, and in the heat it irritates the skin.My periods once again reminded me that I was born with XX chromosomes, and my mood swings also pissed off. No matter how you try to distract yourself, still one week of life a month becomes inferior, at least due to the fact that the stomach still hurts, and you have to limit yourself in terms of sex. As for the transition, everything is quite simple. After the first injection of testosterone, menstruation no longer began. For three months now I have been living peacefully without them. For some, it happens that in the first six months they can still start once, but I hope I was lucky and this will not happen.

Elena Sandakova:

– The ovaries produce estrogens, they are called the hormones of femininity. Due to them, the mammary glands grow, roundness appears, which forms the female phenotype, the uterus menstruates. The testicles produce testosterone, which forms a male figure – broad shoulders, a narrow pelvis, certain character traits, and so on. Testosterone in the female body triggers two processes: defeminization (specific female functions are lost, the uterus decreases, the mammary glands atrophy, the ovaries cease to perform their function) and virilization – masculinity (hair begins to grow in the male pattern, the voice coarsens, the Adam’s apple grows, the figure changes, and virilization of the genitals).

Excess testosterone does not bring anything good to the female body. The appointment of testosterone to women, even in very small quantities, is a controversial issue. There are situations when very small doses of male sex hormones are recommended for women. For example, to increase libido, eliminate sexual dysfunction in the postmenopausal age. But we have not registered a single drug containing male sex hormones for women. Taking testosterone for a woman can become a risk factor for breast cancer, increased blood pressure, insulin resistance, development of metabolic and endocrine disorders.

“For me, my period is life”

Sofia (name has been changed), 39 years old

– At the age of 25 I got married and gave birth to a child. Everything was fine, I enjoyed motherhood, but there was a failure in my relationship with my husband. I had the feeling that I was alone, and my husband had his own life and his hobbies. He only paid attention to me when he needed sex. Then I began to sound the alarm, saying that I felt bad, that he did not see me, did not hear me, that he was using me as a rubber doll.He replied that it all seems to me that I should just find myself a hobby. And he listed: flowers here, for example, to plant, knit, and the like. And then I was covered. I began to feel like an old woman who has no choice but to wait for her grandchildren and plant flowers in the front garden. Menstruation became less and less frequent. At first, the delay was 2-3 months, then it lasted up to six months. When my period was not a year, I went to the gynecologist and said that I probably had a climax. The doctor laughed for a long time, I look, of course, like a girl, but in my heart I was a deep old woman.

I read that in 30 years menopause can occur in one case in a thousand. I told the doctor that I know it is unlikely, but I am that very case. After listening to my thoughts on this matter, the doctor advised … to change my husband. My story ended well, because I decided to go against my relatives and my husband, who did not want to give me a divorce. I decided that I wanted to live and that I would not sleep with a man with whom I did not want to. Then I did not believe that menstruation could return after such a long absence.But I had love, a man appeared in my life who admires me, who sees and hears me, and my periods returned. Now I live, not die slowly. I am very happy with each of my periods. For me, periods are life. I have no idea what I will do when they finally stop. I came to the conclusion that you should never and never go against yourself and allow others to use you. We need to live, love, enjoy the little things, take the maximum from the time allotted to us, with all the passion.And then the body will support and will not want to die.

Elena Sandakova:

There are two extreme types of menstrual disorders. This is amenorrhea – absence of menstruation for more than 6 months, and abnormal uterine bleeding. In all these cases, it is imperative to be examined. There are many different reasons behind amenorrhea. These can be diseases of the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, ovaries, uterus, and so on. If there is abnormal uterine bleeding, that is, blood loss of more than 80 ml, menstruation passes for more than 8 days, more often than once every 24 days, you should immediately consult a doctor to find and eliminate the cause.

“This is the week when everything is rebuilt in the head. A kind of catharsis “

Ksyusha (name has been changed), 23 years old

– My period began at the age of 11. Around this time, my parents bought me a comic book, where all these moments were explained. In my family, such topics have never been closed, so when my period began, I freaked out a little, but was not scared. At first everything was painless, but now it is sometimes very harsh and difficult. I don’t know how to explain it, but it hurts me even to turn my head.The sound hurts and I feel like a wounded animal. Even during menstruation, my mood skips a lot. I used to think what kind of garbage, but I’m kind of an adequate person. I tried to figure it out myself, and at some point I realized that these were just hormones and chemical reactions that were taking place in me. And the best thing I can do is just let them happen, calmly get through this period and move on.

I have a bad experience with a guy. I understood little, and he understood even less, and all this, of course, further complicated these periods.Because you simply cannot explain what is happening to you. But now I no longer have a negative attitude towards menstruation. This is one of the manifestations of the feminine nature, and it is beautiful. Because this is not just a week when you bleed. This is the week when everything is rebuilt in the head. A kind of catharsis. In this state of altered consciousness, you begin to understand what is happening in your life in general. The perception is so sharpened, it works as a catalyst for all processes. As a rule, these days I just want to change everything in my life right away.Just everything that is possible. With such a release of energy, you need to learn how to properly handle. Because, too, it cannot be said that as I saw everything during menstruation, it really is.

Elena Sandakova:

Premenstrual syndrome is very variable in its clinical manifestations. It can manifest itself with headaches, swelling, bloating, intestinal dysfunction, swelling of the mammary glands and psychoemotional disorders. Sometimes they come to the fore, this is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder.Previously, in some countries, a woman was not even tried for murder if she committed it before menstruation, explaining that before menstruation, the woman could not contain her anger. I have been working as a gynecologist for a very long time, and have never seen someone commit a murder because of their period. But women can suffer a lot. There may be suicidal thoughts, depression, anger, tearfulness. Serious psycho-emotional disorders require correction. Premenstrual syndrome is a pathology that requires examination and treatment.Here only an individual approach is possible, there is no universal treatment. Depending on the clinical manifestations of premenstrual syndrome in a particular woman, on her background somatic and gynecological pathology, various drugs can be used, including combined oral contraceptives.

“Basically, I don’t really like that blood is coming from me”

Sveta Timokhova, 22

– When my period began, I felt that I had become a woman and all that.It happened when I was 12. I read about it in books, my mother talked about them, and I was ready for it. There was no fear or surprise. They went well, I had no pain. The cycle was inconsistent at first, but I did not experience any particular discomfort. The discomfort was that we were rather poor, I lived with my grandmother, and she made me pads out of rags. This was the main disadvantage. At the age of 13, I started living with my parents, and my mother already gave me money for pads. When I started to have a sex life, and I got a regular partner, I started taking contraceptives.You need to drink 21 tablets and take a break for a week. At this time, withdrawal bleeding occurs, but this is no longer menstruation.

About a year ago, I began to learn from bloggers that you can drink contraceptives without stopping so that there is no withdrawal bleeding. And I began to think about it, because, in principle, I don’t really like that I’m bleeding. This is not very pleasant. From pads, everything melts, from tampons – it dries. At that time I had no money for a quality menstrual cup. About six months ago, I decided to take contraceptives without interruption.I do not feel any side effects, I am very lucky in this regard. Now I drink contraceptives without interruption, but once every three months bleeding occurs – smearing discharge begins to go. I read that this is normal. You can just take a break, withdrawal bleeding occurs, and you start drinking a new pack.

Elena Sandakova:

There is a prolonged mode of taking hormonal contraceptives and cyclic (with a break for menstruation). Most often, a prolonged regimen is prescribed in the presence of any disease or when they want to delay menstruation.For example, a woman is on vacation and needs to delay her period. The prolonged regime is possible and officially permitted, but with the prolonged regime there may also be bleeding breakouts, that is, bleeding. I would recommend a woman with normal menstrual function without contraindications to prescribe COCs in the usual cyclic version. I cannot give a recommendation for everyone, because in order to choose the right hormonal contraception for a woman, you need to talk to her, find out the anamnesis and choose the right contraceptive and the right regimen.

“I didn’t want to take on the role of a woman, I didn’t want it to somehow change the perception of me”

Nastya Litetskikh, 19 years old

– My periods began on March 8, 2014. In my family, they did not talk about the reproductive system to the extent that it was necessary for me personally. I drew all the information from books, the Internet, magazines. Probably, the family thought that I was coping on my own, although the lack of support and understanding at this age still affected what happened to me during my period.I was skeptical about the process of “becoming” a woman, had doubts about such a rush around this topic. It was especially difficult for me to understand why all the magazines wrote that my mother was the first one who should know about the first menstruation. I didn’t want to talk to her about it at all, I didn’t want to take on the role of a woman, I didn’t want it to somehow change the perception of me. Therefore, the first year I experienced wild stress. I could sit at home until the last day of my period, cry and hate myself.I was afraid to discuss this with someone, I felt disgust for myself, a desire to expel myself in shame from the society of “feminine women”. Mom did not understand very well what was happening to me, we did not express our feelings much.

It was hard for me to admit that this is a common occurrence. I noticed that there was something more behind the images of girls in advertising, I did not understand and did not want to understand why pads should be asked in a whisper, why they do not show blood in ads, why only charming girls in chic shoes use pads in ads.At that time, I was involved in sports, did not like dresses, generally did not like everything connected with traditional feminine hobbies. “Women’s secrets” caused me great doubts and a lot of questions, the first reaction was disgust and disagreement, which I directed at myself due to lack of support. The feminist movement helped me get out of all this. My story is a vivid example of how popular culture can influence the perception of oneself, one’s physicality and health in an unpleasant way.Now I calmly remember this, and everything seems logical – in 2014, athletes, feminists, but just real tough girls have not yet appeared in advertisements for pads with some bold statements. I think it would make a big difference and would then correct the discord with my own body.

Now I am 19, I am an artist, menstrual blood flickers in my photographs, in my texts, in insta, and I generally like to refer to this topic and I think that it is wildly interesting from a cultural point of view.When the vagina becomes a key part of the fem movement, then somehow it no longer seems possible that it can be embarrassing to ask for a pad. By the way, I try to use a bowl instead of gaskets, it is more environmentally friendly, but so far I have been very unsuccessful. Girlfriends say that I chose the wrong size, and you can only figure out what you need by trial and error. From a medical point of view, I am now worried about PMS and chest pains. If I start to review Krzysztof Kieslowski and cry, then the next day I will definitely wake up in blood.A couple of days ago, I was prescribed COC. I believe that this is generally a different level, when you yourself, with the help of pharmaceuticals and hormones, can control changes in your reproductive system, and this must be experienced.

– I am currently working on a project dedicated to the cultural history of the menstrual cycle in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia.This year I will publish an article on the early Soviet period, based on literary sources, memoirs and analysis of public policy. The second article will be published next year, it will be devoted to the transition from the Soviet experience to the post-Soviet one. The global idea is to write a book on this material. In general, I am engaged in the history of the culture of the Soviet Union and modern Russia, medicine, health care and law are of particular interest to me. At some time I became interested in the history of the body, and wanted to do a project at the intersection of the history of emotions, history of the body, medicine and gender history.This is how the study of the menstrual cycle came about.

Pavel Vasiliev

The interviews that I do are mainly with women whose menstrual experience occurred in the late Soviet Union and the 90s. With each interview, I understand more and more that there is no single female experience to which we could reduce everything. There are a variety of experiences, approaches, and understanding of the menstrual cycle. I have identified three completely different options. The first is the calm attitude typical of representatives of the scientific and technical intelligentsia.For some women, menstruation is just a biological fact. One respondent told me: “A man has two legs, and a woman is menstruating. I never really thought about it. ” There are women for whom periods are a big problem. This is often due to pain and other difficulties that accompany menstruation. They talk about how they would like it not to be, and are actively interested in technologies that can minimize or even eliminate menstruation. After menopause, they say “How great! Finally, it’s all over! ” There is another category of women for whom menstruation is an important feminine act.

Of course, this topic remains taboo, although there is more freedom now than before. In the past few years, there has been a lot of network activism and discussion in Russia, which is part of a global trend. This is not only happening in Russia, there are movements all over the world to remove menstrual taboos, talk more openly about menstruation and involve men in dialogue. But this is more of an activist agenda; it has not yet entered the masses so widely. In Soviet times, for many women, any conversation related to menstruation was unacceptable, and today it still remains unacceptable for many.Often, even in a conversation with a partner in a heterosexual couple, this topic is simply avoided, and both parties pretend that this is not the case. Various euphemisms are often used: “these days”, “critical days”, “red army”, “relatives from Krasnodar”. A woman cannot say openly that she has periods, they remain something that must be hidden and cannot be flaunted. This thesis has been criticized for the last 2-5 years. The question arises, “Why should we even hide the very fact of the presence of menstruation?” There is talk of menstrual cups and environmentally conscious menstrual behavior.Girls prefer bowls to tampons and pads for environmental and economic reasons. Also, reusable pads appear – a kind of return to the Soviet experience and practice of reusable use. This is an agenda that is just being formed. But she just defies the taboo and tries to turn the conversation into specifics.

Interestingly, attitudes towards menstruation changed in the 1990s in the context of general liberalization. For example, in the 60s, magazines for girls wrote that during menstruation, practically nothing is possible, sex – in no case.In the 90s, Tampax appeared in pharmacies, and everything became possible: go in for sports, swim, ride a bike, whatever. This can be clearly seen in publications for girls. At the beginning of the 2000s, Deacon Andrei Kuraev published the book “Woman in the Church”, in which he wrote, including about menstruation. He said that if a woman uses modern hygiene products (meaning a tampon), there is no problem, she can go to church during her period. That is, he imagines a woman’s body as a vessel that can be reliably sealed, and there is no problem.As if the problem was that a woman could desecrate the floor of the temple with her blood. And if it is securely sealed, then it can come to church any day. It turns out that even this traditional prohibition has now been lifted, and what was previously forbidden to women is now allowed.

Eight reasons for menstrual irregularities :: Clinician

eighteen
03.2018

  1. Increased stress level
  2. Incorrect power supply
  3. Excessive weight loss and low weight
  4. Increased physical activity
  5. Thyroid disorders
  6. Cessation of oral hormonal drugs
  7. Chronic hormonal imbalance and other hormonal disorders
  8. Food allergies and food sensitivities

According to a 2017 study on the absence of menstruation, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, frequent delay in menstruation for a long time is relatively common for 5% of women of childbearing age, it happens in them at one time or another period of life.Even more women experience menstrual irregularities from time to time.

The hypothalamus and brain, pituitary, ovarian, adrenal and thyroid glands help regulate the menstrual cycle and naturally normalize hormone levels, so it is so important to monitor your bad habits, which can negatively affect hormone levels.

Danger of delayed or irregular menstrual cycles

In women with a regular menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs every 25-28 days.Although the interval between periods is individual for each woman and may differ, especially during puberty and premenopause, in any case, menstruation occurs once a month, if the woman is healthy.

If a woman’s periods stop, which is called “amenorrhea”, then this is a clear sign that you have some kind of health problem. Primary amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation in girls, when they have never had a period, which will begin when they reach puberty.Secondary amenorrhea is when a woman has already had her period, but suddenly stopped and has been absent for three or more months.

The presence of regular moderately painful or painless menstruation every month is a sure sign that the hormonal background is normal, and the reproductive system is in order. The opposite picture is observed if irregular menstruation is recorded, a delay in menstruation, or very painful and intense menstruation. They indicate that the level of one or more hormones is too high, or that one or another hormone is absent at all.If you have any health problems, there is chronic stress, poor nutrition, heavy physical activity, frequent delays in menstruation, then in no case should such problems be left to chance (if you are sure that you are not pregnant).

Unfortunately, according to the latest data, many women prefer not to talk to their doctor about frequent delays or irregular periods, which is a rather high risk, since hormonal imbalance and amenorrhea are associated with a number of serious diseases, and also increase the risks of developing osteoporosis, diseases heart, infertility and other hormonal complications.

According to research by the Department of Endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic, “amenorrhea can indicate a wide range of anatomical and endocrine disorders. Amenorrhea can lead to impaired reproduction. When estrogen levels are low, amenorrhea is often accompanied by imbalances in minerals, blood glucose, and fat metabolism. These metabolic changes affect bones and the cardiovascular system, including an increased risk of osteoporosis and coronary heart disease later in life. ”

What is the menstrual cycle. Natural Ways to Protect the Body from Irregular Menstruation

Anovulation is a violation of the ovulation cycle, as a result of which the egg (or “ovium”) does not mature and does not leave the follicle. Usually, the disease is recognized if the phenomenon continues for a certain period of time, usually more than three months in a row. One of the main signs of anovulation is delayed or irregular periods.For a non-pregnant woman of reproductive age (between 15-40 years), anovulation is abnormal and is considered the main cause of infertility in about 30% of patients of childbearing age. Oligomenorrhea is another name for irregular, but completely incessant periods. It is characterized by a long interval between periods, which is more than 36 days, or when menstruation occurs less often than eight times a year.

This predictable pattern of the ovulation and menstrual cycle is caused by a specific set of changes in a number of sex hormones, especially estrogens.In a woman’s body, there is a fairly large variety of estrogens, the three main ones of which are estradiol, estriol and estrone.

Estradiol is produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands. It is considered the most active of the three main estrogens and is closely related to the menstrual cycle, while other types of estrogens are more responsible for pregnancy. Upon reaching the age of 50, the ovaries begin to produce fewer estrogens, and the main load for their production or the biochemical substance of their precursor used for the synthesis of estrogens is assigned to the adrenal gland.For this reason, women naturally stop menstruating when they reach menopause.

In many women of reproductive age, low estrogen levels can cause delayed or irregular periods. So, amenorrhea in young women is one of the sure clinical signs of estrogen deficiency. With today’s sources of abnormal estrogen dominance such as toxins and unhealthy diets, it’s hard to imagine that anyone might be deficient, but women do.

It is believed that low estrogen levels can be caused not only by an inability to produce enough sex hormones due to hereditary hormonal problems, but in many cases due to the effect of elevated stress hormone levels on the body. If you often have irregular periods, then you should try to avoid stress, because the sex hormones are negatively influenced by metabolic, physical and psychological stressors.

Stress hormones can be dominant due to many factors, with unhealthy diet and chronic emotional stress being the main causes. We need a surge in stress hormones in life-threatening situations in order to find a way out of them, but modern women experience constant tension, which is considered low-level stress, and for this reason it is often overlooked, although in reality the stress is strong enough to affect our health.

Most common causes of delayed or irregular periods

Unlike pregnancy and the onset of menopause, which naturally stop menstruation, the causes of amenorrhea and irregular menstruation presented below are very undesirable and negatively affect our health, but they can be tried to be eliminated.

1. Increased stress level

If a woman experiences severe stress for a long time, then her body begins to conserve energy, not producing ovulation.If a woman experiences a sudden traumatic event, it can put an increased stress on the adrenal glands, which leads to the cessation of the production of estrogens and other reproductive hormones (a condition called hypothalamic amenorrhea). When a woman has an insufficient amount of estrogen, then her uterine mucosa cannot be maintained in a normal state, as a result, menstruation is delayed.

Why is this happening? Your body responds to emergencies.Convenience is very good and fertility is very important, but still secondary from a survival point of view. The innate natural mechanism of survival in all of us involves the constant production of vital stress hormones, otherwise called the response “fight or flight”, such as cortisol and adrenaline. Adrenaline and cortisol are the two main hormones responsible for the body’s response to stress, helping us to escape threats (whether they are real, sudden or perceived threats). These hormones are vital and sometimes very beneficial as they help us run, climb, add strength, make us sweat and regulate our heart rate, but too many of them can lead to health problems.

The body has always prioritized the production of stress hormones that help to cope with critical situations, considering sex hormones as secondary during periods it considers difficult. With chronic stress, there is a lack of nutrients, such as amino acids that contribute to the normal functioning of neurotransmitters, and they are not enough to produce enough hormones, so the body has to choose between stress hormones and sex hormones, and preference is always given to the former.Under high stress conditions, such as dieting, strenuous exercise, or emotionally charged events, all such situations can provoke amenorrhea with or without weight loss.

2. Incorrect power supply

Foods that are low in nutrients, antioxidants and probiotics and are high in stimulants can put an increased strain on the thyroid and adrenal glands.For example, cortisol levels can rise when the following factors are present:

  • high consumption of sugar, hydrogenated fats and artificial additives or pesticides;
  • problems with the thyroid gland;
  • adrenaline fatigue.

Elevated cortisol levels interfere with the optimal production of many other important hormones, including sex hormones. If elevated cortisol levels persist for a long time, it can lead to skin problems, damage to bone, muscle, and brain tissue.This high cortisol cycle can lead to protein deficiencies, resulting in muscle loss and osteoporosis.

If you have menstrual problems, check how well you are eating. Choose foods that are high in antioxidants and nutrients, especially those that are high in fat (even saturated fat, they are good for your situation) and protein. You can also use high-calorie food supplements if you are underweight, lack of adipose tissue, you are actively involved in sports.

3. Excessive weight loss and low weight

When the body mass index (BMI) falls below the 18-19 mark, menstruation may be delayed due to too little adipose tissue. Body fat is important for the production of enough estrogen, for this reason, women who are too thin or who have a serious medical condition such as anorexia and bulimia may suffer from missing or delayed periods. Increased physical activity and therefore a high need for nutrients due to intense exercise can sometimes lead to weight loss and put you at risk of developing hormonal imbalances.

Low-calorie, low-fat foods can also cause nutritional deficiencies and fat loss and contribute to irregular menstruation and bone loss. There is some evidence that very thin vegan women, including those who consume exclusively raw food without cooking, and vegetarians who do not eat only meat, are also at risk, most likely because they are more likely to be underweight and lack of vital useful substances.

4. Increased physical activity

Although moderate exercise is very important for heart health, mood control, sleep, and maintaining a stable body weight, increased physical activity increases the stress on the adrenal, thyroid, and pituitary glands. Therefore, women who abruptly start intense physical training, for example, preparing for a marathon or similar important event that requires high physical excretion, may suddenly stop menstruating.

Like other stress hormones, a surge in cortisol occurs in response to any real or anticipated stress. The latter can be physical (including sports) or emotional. Such stressors include overwork and physical exhaustion from increased physical exertion, which can be accompanied by lack of sleep, constant rush, infectious diseases and emotional exhaustion. In our time, with a constant desire to be slim and maintain good physical shape, some women believe that they need to exercise intensively, they think that profuse sweating is beneficial, and so they exhaust themselves constantly.

Such physical overload can increase stress and take away the energy needed to regulate sex hormones from the body. For example, in one of the reports from the University of Michigan, it is reported that running and ballet are among the physical activities where the largest number of women suffering from amenorrhea are found. Nearly 66% of women running long distances or ballet dancers experience amenorrhea at some point in their lives.The situation is even worse in women who are involved in bodybuilding. Nearly 81% of them suffer from amenorrhea from time to time, while they eat a diet low in nutrients.

“Exercise-induced amenorrhea” may indicate a general depletion of the body, a decrease in vitality and is more characteristic of young girls. Thus, the number of women involved in athletics in childhood and adolescence has increased by 800% over the past 30 years, at the same time, the number of those suffering from hormonal disorders has increased.Other problems that often accompany amenorrhea include decreased bone density and eating disorders. Therefore, doctors are concerned about the susceptibility of this category of patients to heart complications, bone problems and nutrient deficiencies.

5. Thyroid disorders

You may not even suspect that the thyroid gland may be the cause of hormonal disorders.

According to recent studies, thyroid problems are one of the main causes of delayed menstruation, almost 15% of patients with amenorrhea suffer from abnormalities in the thyroid gland.

The thyroid gland, considered the main regulatory mechanism of the endocrine system, is responsible for metabolism and affects many sex hormones.

Thyroid problems, including hypofunctional or endemic goiter and hyperfunction, can cause a wide range of health problems such as changes in estrogen and cortisol levels, and delayed periods. Increased cortisol levels can lead to general hormonal insensitivity, including thyroid insensitivity.This means that the body becomes desentized for estrogens and cortisol, which can cause them to be overproduced.

6. Cessation of oral hormonal drugs

Some women deliberately interrupt their menstrual cycle to prevent pregnancy, but when they stop taking birth control pills, their periods do not start. Although some doctors say that menstruation should resume and return to normal within a few months after stopping hormone pills, many women have delayed or irregular periods for several years afterwards.

A woman’s natural menstrual cycle consists of rising and falling levels of estrogen and progesterone, but using birth control pills keeps estrogen high enough to confuse the body, making it feel like you are pregnant, thus causing your menstrual cycle to malfunction. It takes the body many months and even years to correct this situation and regain homeostasis.

So, in a report published in one of the American journals on obstetrics and gynecology, it is reported that about 29% of women suffer from a delay in menstruation for more than three months after using contraception.Hence our advice: Stop using contraceptives if there are signs of menstrual irregularities.

7. Chronic hormonal imbalance and other hormonal disorders

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an imbalance of hormones in women that negatively affects ovulation. When a woman suffers from polycystic ovary disease, this means that her hormone levels, including estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, are disrupted, which can be expressed in different ways:

  • abnormal growth of body or facial hair;
  • problems with sugar levels;
  • overweight;
  • acne;
  • irregular menstrual cycle.

A gynecologist can diagnose polycystic ovary disease, who must check the level of hormones in a woman, analyze the symptoms and check your genetic predisposition to the disease, as well as examine the ovaries and find out if cysts are growing or not.

Also, women with polycystic disease often experience premature menopause before the age of 40, which can be accompanied not only by the absence of menstruation, but also by hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.Although this is the most rare cause of irregular periods.

8. Food allergies and sensitivity to certain types of foods

Undiagnosed gluten sensitivity, or celiac disease, can also affect hormone levels. Since such problems can cause nutritional deficiencies, negatively affect digestion and contribute to increased stress on the adrenal gland, they, of course, affect the production of sex hormones.

90,000 Why you can’t lose weight, despite all your efforts

You went on a diet, excluded flour and sweets and got used to regular training. At first, the weight decreased, but then a plateau came: the figure on the scales froze or even increased slightly. Below we will analyze why weight loss can stop and what to do in order to still achieve an ideal figure.

1. You misjudge your progress

Burning fat is a rather lengthy process.If you have been on the diet for less than two weeks, it is too early to talk about any progress.

Svetlana Nezvanova

Weight loss passes in waves, and this process is individual. In some people, weight does not change in the first two weeks and only then begins to decrease with volume.

Moreover, scales do not always show real progress in weight loss. Weight gain can be affected by gains in muscle volume or water retention, for example during menstruation.As a result, the fatty deposits will melt, but the scales will not show this.

What to do about it

Don’t expect quick results. Stick to your meal plan for 2-4 weeks before considering measuring progress.

With regard to tracking results, Svetlana Nezvanova says that doctors determine weight loss by the percentage of fat, muscle mass and other body tissues.Without special equipment, you can assess the progress in terms of body volume: measure the girth of the chest, waist and hips at the beginning of the diet and after 2-4 weeks of following it.

Svetlana Nezvanova

If you do not have breakdowns and overeating, you know exactly how much protein, fat and carbohydrates you consume and do not go beyond the recommended norms, but the weight and volume do not change, we can talk about a plateau.The body gets used to the new diet and adjusts, doing everything so as not to lose extra pounds.

2. You eat too little or too much protein

To lose weight and maintain weight, not only the total caloric content of the diet, but also the amount of protein is of great importance. Dietary protein increases feelings of fullness and reduces sugar cravings, speeds up metabolism – increases energy expenditure at rest.

Svetlana Nezvanova

Since all hormones and enzymes are essentially proteins, with a lack of this macronutrient in the diet, certain metabolic reactions simply do not occur.As a result, metabolic processes slow down.

By increasing the amount of protein in your diet, you will receive some benefits, but the main thing is not to overdo it. An excess of this macronutrient can negatively affect weight loss and overall health.

Svetlana Nezvanova

Daily consumption of more than 2.5–2.7 g of protein per 1 kg of body weight can inhibit weight loss. With an excess of protein, the body does not use it, but converts it into glucose.Also, with such an amount of protein, problems from the intestines and other organs are possible.

What to do with it

Strive to build a diet in such a way that at least 30% of calories are consumed from protein. If you are not counting calories, you can target at 1.5-2.2 grams of protein per kg of body weight. The exception is people with kidney disease. High protein diets increase your 91,788 risk of stone formation.

3. You have decreased insulin sensitivity

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps the body maintain normal blood sugar levels.An unhealthy diet with an excess of fast carbohydrates, excess weight and genetic predisposition can reduce insulin sensitivity of cells.

In this condition, the body will produce more and more hormone to cope with high blood glucose levels, which can slow down weight loss and nullify all your efforts.

What to do about it

Losing weight and cutting out fast carbs in itself improves your insulin sensitivity, but you can use two options to spur progress.

Try low-carbohydrate diet

Svetlana Nezvanova

If you eat cereals and fruits (foods rich in carbohydrates) with every meal, your insulin level rises after meals. If you already have insulin resistance or diabetes, you won’t lose weight. In this case, it is recommended to try a low-carb diet.

These diets reduce insulin levels and allow you to lose 91,788 fat without losing muscle mass.However, a low-carb diet has a number of contraindications, so consult your doctor first.

Engage in strength training

Strength training increases the expression of the APPL1 protein , which regulates the uptake of glucose by cells and improves the body’s ability to store it in the muscles. As a result, resistance exercise increases insulin sensitivity even without losing weight. In addition, strength training, along with adequate protein intake, helps maintain 91,788 and build muscle mass, which increases the body’s energy expenditure.

You can choose one method or try both at once. Low-carb diets go well with strength training.

4. You eat too often

It is believed that fractional meals – small but frequent meals – helps to lose weight faster without feeling hungry. However, an analysis of 91,788 scientific data on this topic found no significant weight loss and health benefits for those who eat more than four to five times a day. And even if you carefully monitor your calorie intake and do not exceed your daily allowance, multiple meals can interfere with your progress.

Svetlana Nezvanova

One of the reasons for the plateau is frequent snacks, and this is due to the release of the hormone insulin. If you chew on something most of the time, it never drops to the point where the body starts burning fat.

What to do about it

Eat no more than four or five times a day. You can also try intermittent fasting: it speeds up metabolism, provides good weight loss results and has a positive effect on insulin levels.

5. You don’t get enough sleep

Svetlana Nezvanova

I have been working for over 12 years and have my statistics from practical experience. And the most difficult in terms of metabolism and the level of active cell mass are people who have sleep disorders. Programmers, residents of megalopolises, those who have night schedules.

Sleep reduction affects the secretion of hormones responsible for hunger and satiety: leptin and ghrelin.Just two nights of 4-hour rest increases appetite by 23% and also induces cravings for sweets. As a result, you feel more hungry and lean on high-calorie foods or suffer from the inability to do so.

Six nights of 4 hours sleep increases the level of cortisol, a stress hormone that interferes with fat burning and retains water in the body. A week of 5-hour night rest significantly reduces insulin sensitivity.

Lack of sleep not only slows down weight loss, but also badly affects its quality.For example, in one study, 91,788 people who slept 5 hours a day lost 55% less fat and 60% more muscle than those who rested 8.5 hours.

What to do with it

Try to sleep at least 7-8 hours a day, and go to bed in the first half of the night – no later than 2:00. According to Svetlana Nezvanova, from 10 pm until this time, the body synthesizes two important hormones: melatonin and growth hormone, which are associated with metabolism and fat burning.

If you are used to going to bed well after midnight, the level of these hormones drops, and cortisol levels rise, which negatively affects body composition and the rate of weight loss.

6. You have a high level of stress

Svetlana Nezvanova

A high level of stress definitely prevents weight loss. With chronic wasting nervous tension, levels of cortisol and insulin will be constantly elevated, making it difficult to burn fat. Long-term stress can lead to adrenal fatigue syndrome, hormonal imbalances and decreased metabolism.

Stress also reduces the hormone adiponectin, which is involved in fat breakdown, and increases interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) levels , which can cause chronic inflammation, insulin resistance and diabetes.

In addition, the more stress you experience, the less energy you expend after a meal and the worse your body oxidizes fats. If yesterday you had a strong negative experience, today you will burn about 104 kcal less than if everything was fine. This difference can result in an increase of 5 kg per year.

What to do about it

If you cannot remove the source of stress, try changing your reaction to events. Yoga classes, meditation, breathing techniques – all this helps to calmly respond to external stimuli.For example, in one study, , an eight-week stress management program helped participants lose almost twice as much weight as people in a control group.

Visualization, diaphragmatic breathing and muscle relaxation – all of these techniques contribute not only to weight loss, but also to improve self-esteem and mood, relationships with friends and colleagues, and the state of affairs at work.

7. You drink little water

There is no direct relationship between a lack of water in the diet and a delay in losing weight.But at the same time, an increased amount of fluid can help to get the weight off the ground. Drinking 500 ml of plain water speeds up the metabolism by 24-30% for the next 60 minutes; 2 liters per day increase energy consumption by about 95 kcal.

What to do about it

Women are advised to drink at least 2.7 liters of water per day, men – 3.7 liters. In addition to boosting your metabolism, it can help you reduce hunger and consume fewer calories even without dietary control.

8. You have hormonal disorders

Conditions in which the normal production of hormones is interrupted can cause weight gain and interfere with weight loss. These disorders include:

  • Hypothyroidism – malfunction of the thyroid gland.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome – a violation in the structure and functions of the ovaries, thyroid gland, adrenal cortex. It is characterized by an increased level of male sex hormones.
  • Menopause – a decrease in estrogen production that occurs with age.

What to do about it

Contact your doctor for treatment. You can also consult with a dietitian who will prescribe an appropriate diet.

Whatever the reason, don’t be discouraged. Improve sleep, relieve stress, find the right diet and exercise system to become part of your lifestyle. Only then will you get stable weight loss and excellent health.

Why does the stomach hurt, how is the intestines related to mood and does everyone need to eat soup? From the gastroenterologist

– What diseases of the digestive system are most often treated by patients?

– The most common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are intestinal diseases. Moreover, initially, patients may interpret them differently, but with careful questioning, it is possible to determine that the complaints are related specifically to bowel disease.

Of course, complaints related to intestinal dysfunction cannot be regarded as an independent problem. The state of other organs of the digestive system is of great importance – everything is interconnected in the body.

– Everybody periodically experiences pain in the abdomen. What is usually associated with digestive disorders in people who do not have any serious medical conditions?

– There are a number of factors. Eating habits, place of residence, medication intake, patient’s age – all this affects the microbiome (the set of microflora genes – approx. “Papers” ) a person.

Much depends on what kind of food a person eats, especially in modern conditions. Preservatives found in products with a long shelf life or in semi-finished products, as well as carbohydrates, can negatively affect human health.

For example, the consumption of a large amount of carbohydrates (“carbohydrate type of food” with an abundance of baked goods) leads to an increase in saccharolytic strains of microorganisms, which is accompanied by an increased production of gas-forming substances.In addition, the amount of food consumed also matters. There is always a risk of overeating with a “hasty” meal.

Digestion is also affected by the condition of the mouth and teeth. Already in the oral cavity, food is rubbed, crushed, moistened with saliva and prepared to move into the stomach. Under the influence of amylase (digestive enzyme – approx. “Paper” ) begins the process of breaking down carbohydrates. If several teeth are missing, the process of grinding food may be disrupted.

In this case, an unprepared food lump enters the stomach, which will take more time to digest.In addition, it can become a kind of annoying factor and ultimately lead to diarrhea.

A significant role in the development of disorders is played by changes in the biocenosis (composition of microorganisms – approx. “Paper” ) of the colon. With dysbiosis in the colon, fermentative or putrefactive processes are activated, a large amount of organic acids and gas is formed. The altered flora releases toxins that negatively affect the mucous membrane and nerve endings in it, as well as contribute to the development of inflammation and motor impairment.

All these changes can be manifested by a feeling of bloating, rumbling in the abdomen, increased eruption of intestinal gas, abnormalities in stool frequency.

– Why do patients not always understand that they have problems with the intestines?

– The large intestine actually bends around the right and left flanks (lateral regions – approx. “Papers” ), the upper section [of the abdomen]. When gases inflate the loops of the intestines, a person experiences discomfort – pains can be dull, bursting, cramping.These sensations can move from one area to another, and it may appear that they are associated with another organ.

In this case, the doctor carefully asks the patient and, if necessary, uses additional diagnostic methods to exclude other pathologies.

You need to carefully monitor your feelings: is there a violation of the stool, is the occurrence of pain associated with eating, what foods increase the discomfort, how bowel emptying affects these sensations.

– A common stomach disease – gastritis. What is it connected with?

– Chronic gastritis is indeed quite common. The main role in the development of this disease is played by dystrophy of specialized cells [stomach] of varying severity. There are different forms of chronic gastritis: type A, type B, type C gastritis.

The main cause of the development of Helicobacter pylori gastritis (type B) is called pyloric H. pyloric. It plays a role in the occurrence of not only gastritis, but also peptic ulcer disease.It is believed that infection with this microorganism [Helicobacter] occurs before the age of five. In this case, the patient experiences symptoms of functional dyspepsia (digestive disorders not associated with any pathological changes – approx. “Papers” ): pain or discomfort in the epigastric region, a feeling of fullness after eating, early satiety, nausea, vomiting, belching, heartburn.

To clarify the diagnosis, the doctor may recommend gastroscopy, as well as a study for Helicobacter pylori (a bacterium that lives in the stomach; the presence of Helicobacter is determined in various ways, including using a breath test, blood or feces – approx. “Papers” ).

During gastroscopy, a biopsy (taking samples of stomach tissue) is often performed, followed by examination of these tissues under a microscope. This is a histological analysis, it allows you to assess the stage and degree of gastritis.

– How often does everyday stress, which is not related to illness, lead to abdominal pain?

– Stress is of great importance in the occurrence of any disease and can lead to various pathologies – not only of the intestines.It depends, among other things, on the genetic predisposition of the person.

The central nervous system is closely related to the enteric nervous system of the intestine (regulates the smooth muscles of the internal organs – approx. “Papers” ). Under the influence of intestinal microorganisms, neurotransmitters (biologically active chemicals – approx. “Papers” ) are released, which, in turn, have an effect on the central nervous system: there is information about the so-called “intestine-brain” axis.The link between emotions and intestinal dysfunction has been scientifically proven. It manifests itself in different ways: it can be a loosening of the stool or, conversely, a pronounced spasm, discomfort associated with increased gas production.

If intestinal dysfunction manifests itself for a long time, then ultimately it leads to a change in the microflora of the intestine and submucosa. Thus, impaired [intestinal] motility under certain circumstances may be accompanied by more significant changes in the intestine.

– Irritability and apathy are often indicated as one of the symptoms of digestive diseases. How can mood changes be related to the condition of the gastrointestinal tract?

– This relationship is noticeable in a disease such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There are disturbances in the functioning of structures such as cerebral cortical centers, the autonomic nervous system, the peripheral nervous apparatus of the intestine with a system of neurotransmitters and biologically active amines (organic substances formed from amino acids – approx. “Papers” ), among which serotonin and its receptors in the intestine play a leading role.

Much is still not fully understood. However, it is known that such patients have fermentative dyspepsia, against the background of which intestinal dysbiosis progresses rapidly. A failure in the functional regulation of the intestine is expressed in increased sensitivity to small pathological stimuli.

– Symptoms such as poor skin condition or fatigue are often associated with poor diet and digestive problems.Are these really related things?

– The connection with the skin is sometimes traced, but it cannot be said that it is absolutely direct. A dermatologist refers patients to a gastroenterologist if the symptoms of a dermatological disease may be associated with intestinal dysbiosis or the presence of pyloric Helicobacter in the stomach.

Once the gut microbiota is normalized, patients will notice an improvement in their skin. But skin rashes are not always associated with intestinal pathology.The intestinal microflora and skin microflora differ in composition from each other, although, most likely, they are interrelated.

– You said that the amount of food plays an important role. What is considered overeating and how to avoid it?

– The stomach is also a muscular organ. To avoid overeating, you need to eat slowly, chew food thoroughly. Eating should take at least 20 minutes.

– Why exactly so much?

– Because at the time of stretching of the stomach, an impulse from the receptors that are in it enters the brain after an average of 20 minutes.At this moment, the person realizes that he is satiated. If a person eats hastily, then he manages to eat a much larger amount of food in these 20 minutes. If he chewed food thoroughly, then he would need a smaller portion.

– You can often hear that you need to eat often and not skip breakfast. Is it really important to stick to this regimen?

– If we are talking about a healthy person, then meals should be on average in 3.5-4 hours. But the quality and quantity of food varies slightly: for example, breakfast should be higher in calories, and dinner should be less.

Breakfast should not be imposed – it depends on the person’s habits. If a person is used to having breakfast later, then it is not necessary to force him to change his habit.

Dinner should not be late and plentiful, because in the evening the intensity of digestion decreases. If the work schedule is such that a person is forced to have dinner after 22 o’clock and then go to bed, then it is better for him to reconsider the dinner time and, for example, eat at work.

– But not everyone succeeds in observing the regime – because of the work schedule, for example.It turns out that such a lifestyle excludes proper nutrition?

– Unfortunately, this situation is common. But as soon as a person learns to eat differently, he feels noticeable changes.

– Some people try to eliminate different foods from the diet to see how they affect the body. How justified is it from a medical point of view, if the person does not have allergies or intolerances?

– You should always listen to yourself. A person who suffers from gastrointestinal diseases often has intolerance to certain foods.It can be both primary and secondary.

Secondary intolerance occurs when an enzyme involved in the breakdown of food is present, but produced in a smaller volume. In this case, the food is not processed enough. Most often this applies to carbohydrates, which are found in raw vegetables and fruits, or lactose – a carbohydrate in milk.

If a person with a small amount of the required enzyme consumes raw vegetables and fruits or milk, then he will really experience discomfort, bloating.By eliminating these foods, restoring the flora and intestinal motility, you can subsequently gradually expand the diet.

But there is a primary deficiency – in particular lactose – which can be confirmed by laboratory tests. This is one of the common fermentopathies (a pathological condition characterized by the absence or impaired activity of the enzyme – approx. “Paper” ), in which milk and dairy products should be replaced with lactose-free ones.

Of course, it happens that a patient follows the principles of “healthy” nutrition so strictly that he excludes a large amount of food from the diet.If there is no genetically confirmed intolerance, then your diet must be expanded – otherwise the food will be inadequate, which will lead to certain disorders. This is important to consider, because refusal from food can negatively affect both the human psyche and the vitamin and mineral balance.

Each of us needs to properly analyze our eating habits. For example, you should eat vegetables and fruits, give preference to whole grains, drink water over other drinks, limit salt, sugar and saturated fat.

– In Russia, it is customary to say that soup is a very healthy food for the stomach. Is it really so?

– Soup is used not only in Russian cuisine. The habit of cooking and eating soup is influenced by the traditions of the family. Soup is, first of all, a tasty dish, but the benefits depend on the ingredients that make it up.

– For what symptoms should a person see a doctor as soon as possible?

– It is necessary to seek help from a gastroenterologist if there is a [regular] violation of stool, pain or discomfort in the abdomen, heartburn, frequent belching, bitterness in the mouth, bloating, rumbling in the abdomen, loss of appetite, unmotivated weight loss, as well as the appearance of such a formidable symptom like blood in the stool.
