Cold sores — you know them, you don’t love them and yet that doesn’t stop them from popping up on your face. These pesky, pimple-like blisters are undeniably not the prettiest and it doesn’t help that they’re usually located right by your lips.
While it’s true they’ll go away with a little time and your skin will look as good as new, it’s fair if you don’t want a cold sore to take a toll on your makeup routine. All you need is the right products, so keep reading to get a full lesson on how to cover up your cold sores with face makeup.
Why Do You Get Cold Sores?
Before we talk about how to cover a cold sore, it’s a good idea to go over what one is in the first place. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) a cold sore is a small blister that typically develops on the lip or around the mouth. Cold sores are a result of the herpes simplex virus and per the AAD, cold sores are pretty common — more than half of Americans between 14 and 49 carry the virus that results in cold sores.
How to Treat a Cold Sore
If you think you have a cold sore, head to the dermatologist, as they can often diagnose a cold sore just by looking at it, per the AAD. As far as treatment goes, there are a couple of factors, which your dermatologist will recommend based on your circumstances. The AAD states treatment typically involves oral or topical antiviral medication, pain medication and sunscreen.
If you don’t have the chance to head to the dermatologist right away, there are some dermatologist-recommended at-home options to help care for a cold sore. This includes non-prescription antiviral cold sore medicine, gently applying pressure with an ice cube, and applying petroleum jelly to the affected area. Unfortunately, a cold sore won’t go away overnight but you can speed up the healing process with the proper care regimen.
How to Cover Up a Cold Sore
With that background knowledge in mind, let’s talk about how to cover up a cold sore that’s almost finished healing with some help from your makeup bag.
The Cleveland Clinic states that you can apply non-medicated cosmetics over the affected area, so, when it comes to using makeup on cold sores, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
1. Wait Until the Cold Sore is Dry
While it may be okay to use makeup on cold sores, you don’t want to cover it with makeup at first sight. When cold sores are new, they’re typically open so not only will your makeup not stick (kind of like trying to apply foundation over a pimple you’ve just popped), you don’t want anything getting into the cold sore. Wait until the cold sore is dry and has scabbed over to cover it with makeup. In the meantime, you can always cover up a cold sore with a small bandage.
2. Use Full-Coverage Products

Whether you’re going to a wedding or a big job interview, it’s hard to feel your best with a cold sore on your face.
Using makeup such as concealer may help, but the timing can be tricky. “I wouldn’t recommend trying to cover a cold sore if it is not partially healed or scabbed over,” says Denise Gevaras, a professional makeup artist in Toms River, N.J. “Most cold sores will ooze in the beginning, and trying to put makeup on them will not only draw attention to them but can probably prevent them from healing properly.”
“It’s hard to conceal a cold sore when it has blistered and is still weeping,” agrees Danielle M. Miller, MD, a dermatologist at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass. “But you might be able to use a concealer safely when cold sores are in the healing stage. You also might be able to use an antiviral medication to prevent a cold sore from breaking out or to make it heal more quickly.”
Concealer to Hide a Cold Sore
Once your cold sore has begun healing, you can use makeup to lessen its appearance. “To cover a healing cold sore, I would recommend using a highly concentrated heavy concealer,” says Gevaras.
“I have done this often in the past with clients having a breakout right before their wedding.”
Gevaras recommends these steps to best conceal a cold sore:
- Use a concealer with a creamy texture, not a liquid. These concealers are usually sold in small jars, tubes, or compacts, and are very concentrated.
- Only a small amount of a heavy concealer is needed — a little goes a very long way.
- If you have a lot of redness, you may benefit from using concealer in two different shades: a yellow-based concealer to neutralize redness and a concealer that matches your skin tone.
- Dab on the yellow concealer using a disposable makeup sponge. Start with a very small amount and build it up, if necessary, to avoid cakiness.
- After the yellow concealer is applied, top it with a very light dusting of finishing powder. Pat it on lightly to avoid disturbing the concealer.
- Next, gently dab on the concealer color that matches your skin tone and use a stipple motion to blend.
- Apply another light dusting of finishing powder to set.
“Because cold sores are contagious, to avoid contaminating makeup products, use only disposable sponges and brushes, even if the cold sore is scabbed over,” warns Gevaras. “Never ‘double dip’ in the concealer or powder with the same makeup sponge or brush.”
Getting Rid of Cold Sores Sooner
While there is nothing you can do about an active, oozing cold sore, you might be able to shorten the life of the cold sore or even keep it from showing up.
“In many cases, symptoms of numbness and burning around your mouth or lip are early warning signs of a cold sore,” explains Dr. Miller. “Taking medication at this stage may suppress the blistering phase and shorten the duration of cold sores.”
If you commonly get cold sores or you have the early warning symptoms of a cold sore, ask your doctor if a prescription antiviral medication can help you.
Cold sores have a habit of breaking out when you have a cold, but they can be also caused by stress.

Genital herpes symptoms

Primary infection is accompanied by headache, general weakness and malaise, muscle pain, and fever. Literally after a couple of days, such symptoms practically disappear, and only local ones are already more manifest – painful herpetic vesicles, sores at the healing site, itching of the skin surface, local irritation.
The main symptoms of genital herpes in men and women are itching and soreness. Exacerbations can occur in almost 25-40% of patients. Almost imperceptible symptoms are also possible, in another case, pain, tingling and burning intensify. Herpes is especially sensitive in the intimate area, on the lips and in the mouth!
Manifestation of genital herpes in women
Complaints of discomfort in women may appear after 3 days, but sometimes this period is extended up to two weeks.
The symptoms are quite noticeable. This is local irritation, pain and characteristic discharge. There is a bubble rash on the mucous membrane of the genital organs, herpes inside the vagina, on the labia.
Small vesicles of liquid spread into the urethra, visible and palpable in the perianal region. Burning and itching sensation are almost constant, there is discomfort during urination. Perhaps an increase in lymph nodes in the groin, a systematic increase in body temperature!
Manifestation of genital herpes in men
Genital herpes: symptoms in men In men, genital herpes also manifests itself quite characteristically. These are rashes on the penis, as well as on the scrotum, in the urethra and perineum, inflammation of the foreskin. First there is a burning sensation, which turns into pain, local hyperthermia. It is also possible to accompany seals in the inguinal lymph nodes.
Herpes on the genitals in men is well identified, as it is visible visually.

• Consequences of genital herpes in women – chronic pain syndrome at a local level, combined effects of other infectious and inflammatory processes, irritation of the genital organs, dysbacteriosis, a high level of traumatism of the genital mucosa.
Also among the complications of herpes for women are vaginitis, vulvovaginitis, dysfunction of the reproductive system;
• Genital herpes complications in pregnant women – the possibility of transmitting the herpes virus to the child, damage to the vital organs of the unborn baby, congenital anomalies, the possibility of premature birth or increased need for a caesarean section!
