Managing the symptoms of fibromyalgia or related ailments is not easy. So, many patients turn to complementary health approaches to pain relief and sleep problems. They may use Chinese herbs or over-the-counter supplements such as 5-HTP, melatonin, and SAM-e.
Because so many people — not just those with fibromyalgia — are using complementary health therapies, Congress formed the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). It is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and it helps appraise complementary health treatments, including supplements, and define their effectiveness. This organization is now creating safe guidelines to help people choose appropriate complementary health approaches that may help their symptoms without making them ill.
Are Herbs and Supplements for Fibromyalgia Safe and Effective?
Some preliminary studies indicate that some medicinal herbs and natural supplements may help treat symptoms of fibromyalgia. Other studies of herbs and natural supplements, though, are less positive. If you want to take a natural approach to treating fibromyalgia, it’s important to learn as much as you can about the therapies you consider. The herbs and natural supplements described in this article are just some of the complementary health approaches that may have an impact on fibromyalgia.
How Does 5-HTP Help Fibromyalgia Pain?
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is a building block of serotonin. Serotonin is a powerful brain chemical, and serotonin levels are thought to play a significant role in fibromyalgia pain. Serotonin levels are also associated with depression and sleep.
For those with fibromyalgia, 5-HTP may help to increase deep sleep and reduce pain. In one study published in the Alternative Medicine Review, researchers reported that supplementation with 5-HTP may improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and fibromyalgia pain. However, there are some contradictory studies that show no benefit with 5-HTP.
5-HTP is usually well tolerated. L-tryptophan and possibly 5-HTP was associated with a serious condition called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome. Some experts believe that a contaminant in these supplements led to the condition, which causes flu-like symptoms, severe muscle pain, and burning rashes.
Can Melatonin Help Relieve Sleep Problems Associated With Fibromyalgia?
Melatonin is a natural hormone that’s available as an over-the-counter supplement. It is sometimes used to induce drowsiness and improve sleep patterns. Some preliminary findings show that melatonin may be effective in treating fibromyalgia pain. Most patients with fibromyalgia have sleep problems and fatigue, and it’s thought that melatonin may help relieve these symptoms.
Melatonin is generally regarded as safe with few to no side effects. Due to the risk of daytime sleepiness, though, anyone taking melatonin should use caution when driving.
Is St. John’s Wort a Helpful Fibromyalgia Herb?
There’s no specific evidence that St. John’s wort is helpful in treating fibromyalgia. However, this herb is often used in treating depression, and depression is commonly associated with fibromyalgia.
An analysis of studies that looked at the association between the use of St. John’s wort and depression found that the herb is as effective and safe as selective SSRI antidepressants such as Prozac or Zoloft in treating depression.
St John’s wort is usually well tolerated. The most common side effects are stomach upset, skin reactions, and fatigue. St. John’s wort should not be mixed with antidepressants or any other supplement unless your doctor says it’s OK, because the combinations can cause illness.
How Can SAM-e Help Fibromyalgia Pain and Depression?
It’s not known exactly how SAM-e works in the body. Some feel this natural supplement increases levels of serotonin and dopamine, two brain neurotransmitters. Although some researchers believe that SAM-e may alter mood and increase restful sleep, current studies do not appear to show any benefit of SAM-e over placebo in reducing the number of tender points or in alleviating depression with fibromyalgia. Additional study is needed to confirm these findings.
Can L-carnitine Help Improve Fibromyalgia Symptoms?
The studies are limited, but it’s thought that L-carnitine may give some relief from fatigue in people with fibromyalgia. Some researchers have also concluded that while more studies are warranted, L-carnitine may provide support for the muscular system of patients with fibromyalgia.
What About the Effect of Probiotics on Digestive Problems Associated With Fibromyalgia?
Probiotics are dietary supplements that contain potentially beneficial bacteria or yeasts. They may assist with the breakdown and proper absorption of food and help improve digestion. Some of the ways probiotics are used include:
Side effects of taking probiotics are usually mild and include gas or bloating.
There are other herbs and natural supplements that people say have helped manage fibromyalgia symptoms. They include echinacea, black cohosh, cayenne, lavender, milk thistle, and B vitamins. Nevertheless, there are no definitive studies on the efficacy of these natural therapies.

Hannah is beside herself and doesn’t know what to do. Her body has been aching all over for several months. In addition, she has been extremely fatigued and depressed. What is Fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia, also called fibromyalgia syndrome or FMS, is a condition mostly affecting women between 20-50 years of age. It is characerized by chronic, widespread, severe muscular aching and pain, and stiffness accompanied by insomnia, fatigue, and depression. Unlike osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus erythematosus, it is neither a rheumatic, inflammatory, progressive, or degenerative disorder. However, it is also not solely a psychosomatic or psychiatric disorder. In other words, it is not all in the patient’s head. What it is is a chronic, debilitating condition of unknown etiology or cause, but which is probably caused by a number of different factors involving a complex relationship between the psyche (the mind) and the soma (the body). In 1987, the American Medical Association (AMA) recognized FMS as a true illness and major cause of disability.
Because this condition does not result in any physical damage to the body or its tissues, there is no one laboratory test or x-ray which can confirm this diagnosis. Becuase this condition is so commonly associated with chronic, enduring fatigue, it is often confused with chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome (CFIDS) in the US. - What Is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by a generalized, aching pain. In the United States, an estimated five million people suffer from this disorder. Most are women of childbearing age.
The Symptoms Of Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia symptoms include aches and stiffness in muscles, tendons (which attach muscles to bone) and ligaments (which attach bones to each other). The pain can occur in any part of the body and can be widespread or localized. Fibromyalgia symptoms typically develop gradually and frequently come and go in cycles. Women tend to experience more widespread problems, while men more often develop localized fibromylagia symptoms, such as pain in the shoulder.
- Pain. Fibromyalgia pain is often described as a deep muscular aching that is either burning, throbbing or sharp. The pain and stiffness is often worse in the morning.
- Fatigue. The sensation of being drained of energy and unable to concentrate can vary from mild to incapacitating.
- Difficulty sleeping. Sleep does not feel refreshing; and fibromyalgia patients report feeling exhausted when they wake up.
- Sensitivities. About 50 percent of fibromyalgia patients report sensitivities to noise, bright lights, odors, medications and certain foods.
- Chronic headaches. An estimated 50 percent of patients report migraines or tension headaches.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Between 40 to 70 percent of patients experience diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain and gas.
Other fibromyalgia symptoms may include dizziness or lightheadedness, menstrual cramping, jaw pain, numbness and tingling sensations, cognitive and memory problems (often called “fibro fog”), temporomandibular joint disorder, pelvic pain, restless leg syndrome, sensitivity to chemicals and temperature, and anxiety and depression. These symptoms can vary in intensity and, like the pain of fibromyalgia, wax and wane over time.
Because none of the symptoms of fibromyalgia are unique to this condition, physicians cannot make a diagnosis based on the presence of one or more of them. Instead, today’s diagnostic criteria specify that patients must have had pain in four quadrants of the body for a minimum of three months and tenderness in at least 11 of 18 specific areas called “tender points” on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms or legs that hurt when touched.
The Causes Of Fibromyalgia
New research suggests that imbalances in the nervous system amplify normal sensation, making even a slight touch feel painful. This super-sensitivity to pain appears to be genetic. Fibromyalgia does run in families, and researchers have identified one gene believed to be involved in the syndrome. Patients also have higher-than-normal levels of a neuropeptide called substance P that is involved in the communication of pain signals to the brain, and lower-than-normal levels of the pain-mitigating hormones serotonin and norepinephrine.
Even if you are born with a genetic predisposition to fibromyalgia, you still need to experience something that triggers the disorder. This can be a viral infection, emotional stress, an accident or injury or, perhaps, exposure to certain drugs or chemicals.
What Is The Conventional Fibromyalgia Treatment?
There is no single reliable fibromyalgia treatment. It often requires a team approach, enlisting physicians who are familiar with the disorder (not all doctors are; in fact, some physicians argue that fibromyalgia isn’t real since no physical signs can be detected by x-rays, blood tests or other diagnostic techniques).
Only a single pharmaceutical drug, pregabalin (Lyrica) has been approved by the FDA as a fibromyalgia treatment, but a number of other drugs are frequently used:
- Painkillers: These can range from familiar over-the-counter drugs such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) to prescription medicines, sometimes including narcotics, for those with severe muscle pain. However, no solid evidence has shown that narcotics are effective for the chronic pain of fibromyalgia and continued use presents a risk of physical or psychological dependence.
- Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): This category includes aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and naproxen sodium (Anaprox, Aleve). These drugs work by inhibiting prostaglandins, substance which play a role in pain and inflammation. They can help relieve the muscle aches of fibromyalgia as well as the menstrual cramps and headaches often associated with the disorder.
- Antidepressants: These drugs help elevate levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the central nervous system. Low levels of these chemicals are associated not only with depression, but with pain and fatigue. Tricyclic antidepressants taken at bedtime in dosages lower than those used to treat depression can help promote restorative sleep, relax painful muscles and heighten the effects of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-killers. Other antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), taken in doses lower than those used to treat depression, can reduce fatigue and some other symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. A combination of the tricyclic, amitriptyline, and the SSRI fluoxetine seems to relieve symptoms better than either drug alone.
- Benzodiazepines: Such as valium may be prescribed to help relax tense, painful muscles and stabilize the erratic brain waves that can interfere with deep sleep. These drugs can also relieve symptoms of restless legs syndrome, which is common among people with fibromyalgia. Because of the potential for addiction, doctors usually prescribe benzodiazepines only when other drugs haven’t helped.
In addition, fibromyalgia treatment may include a combination of physical and occupational therapy, as well as instruction in pain-management and coping techniques, and in properly balancing rest and activity.
What Natural Treatments Does Dr.
Weil Recommend For Fibromyalgia?
The following lifestyle changes:
- Exercise. Regular exercise has proven one of the best treatments. Although muscle pain may worsen during exercise, the pain usually dissipates within 30 minutes. Stretching and low-impact aerobic activity (swimming, walking, yoga, or using cardiovascular machines like stationary bikes or elliptical trainers) are often the most effective.
- Regular sleeping habits. This is critical for reducing pain and improving energy and mood.
- Relaxation techniques. Meditation, yoga or breath work can help counteract stress.
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy. To learn how to cope better with symptoms and stress.
- Acupuncture or massage. Both are often helpful in relief of whole-body systemic conditions.
- The Feldenkrais Method. To correct poor posture or habits of movement that may contribute to pain.
Nutrition And Supplements For Fibromyalgia
- A diet rich in organic fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can fortify your body’s natural defenses and healing system.
- Eliminate polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, all partially hydrogenated oils, and all foods (such as deep-fried foods) that might contain trans-fatty acids. Use extra-virgin olive oil as your principal fat.
- Increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids.
- Eat ginger and turmeric regularly for their anti-inflammatory effects.
- In addition to a daily antioxidant regimen, take 250 mg of magnesium and 500-700 mg of calcium daily to help relax and maintain nerves and muscles. (However, Dr. Weil does not recommend calcium supplements for men.
- Boswellia and malic acid may also be beneficial.
Natural Treatments for Fibromyalgia – Mother Earth Living

Fibromyalgia usually affects women and is characterized by chronic pain and fatigue. The cause is uncertain, but it may be linked to an excess of certain brain chemicals or a fault with the transmission of pain signals. Gotu kola is a relaxing tonic for the brain and nerves. It enhances cognitive function and rebuilds connective tissues. See box, opposite. Avoid in pregnancy and with epilepsy. May cause skin sensitivity. Take 1-1/2 – 2-1/2 milliliters of 1:2 extract in a little water 3 times daily.
Wild oats are restorative and a tonic for the nerves, making them useful for treating a state of debility. Take 1 – 2-1/2 milliliters of the green milky seed extract in a little water 3 times daily.
Licorice interacts with the body’s adrenal function, balancing hormones and restoring vitality, to help treat fibromyalgia. Avoid with hypertension and during pregnancy, and large doses over long periods. Make a decoction with 1/2-1 teaspoon dried liquorice root per 9 fluid ounces (250 milliliters) boiling water, and drink 4-1/2 -9 fluid ounces (130-250 milliliters) 3 times daily.
A varied, nutrient-dense diet with whole foods is vital for supporting fibromyalgia, helping to manage discomfort and energize.
Goji berries and sour cherries contain natural melatonin, which promotes regular sleep cycles to help restore energy levels. Snack on a handful of goji berries or have a glass of sour cherry juice before bedtime to aid sleep and reduce pain.
Coconut oil, as well as being a source of quick fuel, is also anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting. Use 3-4 tablespoons each day in cooking, dressings, or just eaten on its own.
Fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi contain beneficial organisms that help balance gut flora. Use as condiments for main meals several times a week.
Certain key nutrients can help to ease pain and fatigue, so try to make these part of your daily regimen.
CoQ10, a vitamin-like compound, is necessary for the production of energy at a metabolic level and can help to reduce the pain and fatigue of fibromyalgia. Take 300 milligrams daily.
Omega-3 fatty acids, from fish or algal sources, have an anti-inflammatory action that may help to reduce pain and stiffness. Take up to 2 grams daily.
Turmeric contains curcumin, well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Take up to 1 gram daily.
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to chronic pain. Take a high-dose supplement of up to 1600 iu vitamin D3 daily.
Insomnia can raise the risk of fibromyalgia, especially in women. A regular sleep routine is essential to combat pain and exhaustion.
Gentle regular exercise, especially swimming, can relieve pain and improve quality of life.
Yoga can be an effective way of managing fibromyalgia pain.
Acupuncture can help to reduce pain and improve quality of life for those with chronic pain conditions.
Massage, with or without essentials oils, can aid relaxation, relieve pain, and reduce anxiety and depression. Weekly sessions are the most beneficial.
