Frequently Asked Questions

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that affects your body’s ability to manage blood glucose. In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin, a hormone that helps transport glucose from the blood and into muscle cells to be converted to energy or stored as reserved fuel. In Type 2 diabetes, the cells become “insulin resistant,” meaning that although insulin is produced, the cells do not respond properly, which causes sugar to linger in the blood (leading to high blood sugar). When untreated, both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes can progress and a host of health complications can follow.

What does a diet plan for diabetes entail?

A diabetes diet plan is no different than what is recommended for most people who want to eat for general health and well-being. Score! A diet plan for diabetes management is all about emphasizing nutrient-rich and plant-based foods like vegetables, beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. These are general guidelines, and it’s important to talk to your diabetes care team to determine what diabetes diet plan and food choices work best for you. We can’t stress that point enough: teamwork is key.

Who does diabetes affect?

Over 34 million Americans have type 2 diabetes. Shockingly, about 7 million don’t even know they have it, as the signs and symptoms of diabetes often go unnoticed for a long period of time without regular doctor visits. Research shows that healthy eating and physical activity are effective strategies for managing the affliction; however, as diabetes progresses, blood sugar monitoring may be necessary and medication may be required. We recommend working with a registered dietitian and health care professional to personalize your care and determine a treatment plan that’s best for you.

How can meal kit delivery help?

At Sunbasket, delicious is our top priority. That’s why our award-winning chefs and registered dietitians work side-by-side to deliver maximum flavor without relying on unnecessary amounts of sugar. You’ll notice we turn to citrus, herbs, spices, aromatics, and vinegars to brighten and heighten the flavor of our meals while keeping added sugar to a minimum. And more often than not, we use natural sources such as maple, honey, and coconut sugar to get the job done. How sweet it is!

Do people with diabetes have to avoid all carbohydrates?

What if we told you…no! Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to give up carbs on a diabetes diet plan. In fact, figuring out the right amount and types of carbs to include in your diet plan for diabetes can make a big difference in managing your blood glucose and meeting your overall diabetes management goals. Carb-e diem!

What does “carb smart” mean?

Here at Sunbasket, we want you to eat “carb smart”––meaning we want you to eat high-quality, whole food sources of carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, and lentils. These foods are minimally processed, nutrient-dense, and slow-burning, meaning they are digested at a slower rate and thus have a gentler impact on your blood sugar levels to keep you feeling energized and satisfied for longer. Since behavior science shows that enjoying what you can have is much more effective than fixating on what you can’t have, our carb-smart, diabetes-friendly recipes aim to deliver under 70 grams of high-quality carbs per serving.

Do I have to be diagnosed with diabetes to follow or benefit from a diabetes diet plan?

Nope! The strategies of a diabetes-friendly diet are the same strategies health experts recommend for a full spectrum of health goals, including overall well-being, disease-prevention, and longevity. Almost anyone can benefit from embracing the strategies of a diabetes-friendly meal plan, no matter what your health goal may be.

What’s the difference between added sugar and naturally occurring sugar?

Many foods––vegetables, fruits, whole grains––naturally contain a small amount of sugar. That’s because sugar is a type of carbohydrate, and plants rely on sugar for energy. These unprocessed, whole foods come packaged with fiber and other good-for-you nutrients, and because of this, their sugars should not be feared. In contrast, added sugars are sugars that have been extracted from the originating source, refined into high concentrations, and then added during the processing of foods. Because refined sugar is stripped away from its whole source, this sugar provides little nutritional value––think cane sugar, brown rice syrup, barley malt extract, corn syrup, and plenty of other pretty words for what essentially is just plain ol’ sugar. When it comes to added sugars, the goal is to always keep them to a minimum; a general rule of thumb is to keep added sugar between 6-8 teaspoons per day. Sweeeeeeet.

The real story of a 54-year-old entrepreneur who underwent gastric bypass and lost 35 kg – July 9, 2023

Olga Karakuts, who lost 35 kilograms of excess weight, says that she began to feel much better

Share

Olga Karakuts, owner of a lingerie shop in Fryazino near Moscow, underwent gastric bypass, a surgery for the surgical treatment of obesity. Before that, she weighed 120 kilograms, and 8.5 months after – 85 kilograms.

— 120 kilograms of fat, folds and edema, type 2 diabetes and a bunch of huge ugly clothes, — Olga explained the reasons that pushed her to the operation. – Walking like an old bear, I can not climb on the top shelf or get something from below. I’m so tired of this life…

54-year-old Olga survived the 1990s, when she had to drag her family and small children with difficulty. There was a catastrophic lack of money, so there was not even a thought about some kind of proper and healthy food – if only there was food. Every day I had to think about how to feed my family, and be afraid of tomorrow, that there might not be money for food. The fear of being hungry did not leave Olga for a minute, gnawed at her from the inside. And, most likely, this fear became one of the reasons for feeling eternal hunger – to eat, eat as much as possible, for future use. Desire and fear are unconscious, subconscious, but constantly making you eat more and more. And although many years have passed, life has changed, and now Olga herself is an individual entrepreneur with her own small business, the hungry way 90’s forever left its mark on the soul.

– We were in great need then, and therefore now the first question I ask a person is – have you already eaten today, do you have anything to eat? — said Olga Karakuts. – A lot of people come to my shop, completely different people. And the first thought, when I see a person who is disadvantaged, in deprivation, is to feed him. In general, I really love people, I love it when visitors come to my outlet. We talk a lot, just like that, even with strangers. And I console them, encourage them, if I see that a person is ill. It’s just that at some point I realized on my own how hard it is to live if you give up yourself and live on other people’s desires. And you can’t forget about yourself.

When you are unhappy inside, how can those around you be happy? Well, here I am sitting in my shop, and different people come to me, both pensioners and the disabled are drawn to me. And I console them, hug them – well, just like a free psychologist. And even if they don’t buy anything from me, I get satisfaction from the fact that, after talking with me, they poured out their soul and it became easier for them.

Before the operation, Olga weighed 120 kilograms

But 8.5 months ago Olga had to make one of the most serious decisions in her life:

— To be honest, I was going to die. I asked for forgiveness from God, prepared all my material base in the store, paid off all the debts for the goods, so that if I die, there would be no debts left after me. She told the children what and how, just in case – you never know what could happen. I have come to terms with this idea. I told all my relatives that I love everyone and forgive everyone. I am a believer, so I was not afraid to die. It was terrible for the children that I would not be able to help them anymore, that I would not be able to be with them. But also to live as before, in a huge heavy body, with an eternal feeling of hunger and incessant gorge…

But Olga took a long time to decide on the operation. And the first “bell” was a meeting in the church, where she has been going for many years. There, Karakuts met a girl who underwent bariatric gastric bypass surgery.

Gastric bypass, or gastric bypass, is a surgical procedure in which a large part of the stomach is removed, dividing it into two parts: upper and lower, and then a loop of the small intestine is sutured to the upper part, thus creating a “small stomach”.

Olga Karakuts told our colleagues from MSK1.RU what happened after that meeting, how the operation went and how her life changed. We publish her story:

– That girl from the church had an operation and lost weight from 140 to 70 kilograms. And every time I pestered her with questions: “Do you want to eat?”, “Does something hurt inside?” And every time she answered that she was fine. We talked a lot about it, about being overweight. She said that she began to get fat as a child, when she felt that her mother loved her youngest son more than her. Trying to drown out this resentment, she “jammed” her childhood pain with everyone in a row. And only when I became an adult, I realized that we should already forget about it, forgive and just live.

Without going through this path, perhaps even an operation will not be able to overcome the internal hunger. For six months I approached her, asked questions, but for some reason I still did not believe. Probably because she herself is so modest, laconic, and I did not believe her. However, each time she said that she felt very good, there was no constant hunger, and most importantly, her blood sugar had returned to normal. But it was very difficult for me to believe in this – how can it be that gastric bypass will save me from diabetes?

The entrepreneur wanted to lose weight, but at first she did not believe that the operation would help

I have been suffering from type 2 diabetes for about ten years. I felt very bad, very bad. I could eat a kilo of food and still not get enough. And the state of health is terrible: you are hungry with a full stomach. Of course, I suffered from it.

Studies have been conducted that have shown that people with type 2 diabetes after gastric bypass lost 60-70% of their excess weight, began to stick to their diet better, feel full more quickly, and most importantly, 85% of patients had a complete remission of diabetes. That is why they believe that this operation is more suitable for people with a sweet tooth.

Nevertheless, bariatric surgery as a method of combating obesity is not a 100% panacea without any complications and side effects. There are risks, and they are quite serious. And first of all, it should be understood that purely postoperative complications are possible: poor healing of the suture, which can lead to purulent processes and peritonitis. There is a serious risk of postoperative thromboembolism. Unfortunately, in the statistics of bariatric surgery, although few, but fatal outcomes due to postoperative complications have been recorded. As a rule, the tragedy occurred due to an untimely visit to the doctor when the state of health worsened. This operation has many contraindications.

Olga decided to have a gastric bypass. And she did not regret it

Share

At first it was psychologically difficult for me to get used to small portions: I always ate much more. And at first, I often had vomiting from the fact that an extra amount of food was eaten – it simply did not fit into the new reduced stomach. Therefore, it is impossible to overeat before the stomach ruptures: you start eating more – hellish pain begins, from which you are forced to stop. The head wants, the appetite is huge, but you simply cannot cram even more into yourself – the pain stops you. Although once I almost had a breakdown. About a month after the operation, I made cabbage rolls for the whole family, ate one, and realized that I really, really want to eat more. And I started to eat, or rather, I tried. But the pain began such that I realized: if I still shove it into myself, then I’ll go crazy.

The postoperative period was ten times easier than I thought. I threw myself into it all, as if into a pool with my head. I didn’t hire psychologists, I decided to do the operation, and then I’ll figure it out in the process. And it happened just like that: they operated, I came to my senses, I can drink. Slowly began to drink protein shakes. But it was impossible to eat normal food right away: after all, the whole stomach was edematous after the operation, nothing could be stuffed into it, it was all stitched with brackets. If the water passes, it’s already good, which means that the operation was successful, which means that later, over time, you will drink and eat normally. This is how I gradually switched from water, cocktails and jelly to baby food in mashed potatoes, various diluted porridges, mashed vegetables with chicken breast. My entire freezer was full of zucchini and pumpkin puree – I had all this prepared in advance.

However, a year ago everything was different. Many relatives and friends considered this a stupid idea, because it seemed to them: “Olga just needs to pull herself together and stop eating so much, it’s just her whim to indulge in gluttony.” The people around were simply unable to understand the torment that I experienced, feeling constant hunger.

Olga does not intend to stop there and wants to lose another 10-15 kilograms

Share

My husband was so afraid that I was going to have an operation that I just quietly got up in the morning and left in a taxi so as not to injure him. I prepared everyone morally that if something happens, don’t worry: I’ll die, so I’ll die – I’ll go to God. But now he, of course, is very pleased, even proud! Although at first he did not even notice, I told him: “Look, I lost 20 kilograms,” but he does not see. Well, already when I lost 30 kilograms – I noticed! The children are happy and very happy, happy for me that I feel good, more energy has appeared. And in general, I began to change, and everything around me changed for the better. And the main change is that I began to perceive life as it is, began to enjoy every day of it: if nothing hurts me, I am already happy. If nothing hurts in children – great happiness. The inner state of the heart is happier.

And now the feeling is wonderful – I no longer have a meal, I don’t think about food, my dreams are to lose another 10-15 kilograms and live longer in a beautiful body.

Earlier, we told the story of a teacher who weighed 154 kilograms and was able to lose weight to 83. How she looked before and how she looks now – see in a short video.

Kvass muesli: what is harmful and useful okroshka | Articles

In hot weather, the demand for okroshka in Russian homes and public catering establishments rises sharply. Many are ready to eat a traditional Russian dish every day. Meanwhile, such a treat has its pros and cons. How okroshka is useful, and in what cases it is better to refrain from it – in the material of Izvestia.

Myths and reality

Traditional cold soups are in great demand in summer. The most popular of them is okroshka. Every hostess knows that is a classic dish prepared from fresh cucumbers, green onions, dill, parsley, radishes, boiled potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, boiled meat or sausages. All ingredients are crushed or crumbled – hence the name. Then, to the dismay of the supporters of separate nutrition, the products are mixed in one container and poured with kvass or kefir. At the end, okroshka is seasoned with sour cream, horseradish or mustard and salted to taste.

Dietitian-therapist Olga Lushnikova believes that okroshka, made from high-quality and fresh ingredients, is an excellent dish containing a large amount of useful substances. And the doctor calls the theory of separate nutrition a myth, a delusion and a pseudoscientific dietary concept.

Photo: Global Look Press/Komsomolskaya Pravda

– The human digestive system is formed in such a way as to digest mixed food, and not individual types of food in turn. It has been proven that only a combination of different foods best provides the body with the nutrition it needs with food. With a large variety of them, it is easier for the body to “choose” the necessary ones,” says Olga Lushnikova.

Nutritionist Ludmila Mykityuk shares the expert’s point of view. She also believes that summer soup perfectly satisfies hunger and tones up well in the heat, and with the right selection of products, all the ingredients get along well and are only beneficial.

— The presence of vegetable and meat ingredients, as well as eggs in okroshka, ensures the intake of various vitamins, microelements, carbohydrates, animal protein and makes the dish balanced, — the expert adds.

Ideal set

Nutritionist-therapist Lushnikova offers to understand the benefits of the dish, “going over” for each component separately. For example, with a very low calorie content of cucumbers (only 10–15 kcal per 100 g), their composition is incredibly rich. It includes vitamins B1, B2, K, C, A, E, potassium, magnesium, iodine, zinc, manganese, iron and other trace elements, polyphenols (powerful antioxidants).

Photo: Global Look Press/CTK/digifoodstock.com

— Cucurbitacin, an organic substance found in cucumbers (especially in the peel) that gives them bitterness, is a very powerful antioxidant and has beneficial properties: anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, antitumor and anthelmintic, the expert explains.

Green onions, dill and parsley also have a unique vitamin and mineral composition. Olga Lushnikova draws attention to the fact that they contain a lot of B vitamins, as well as C, A, K; contains calcium, potassium, selenium, magnesium, zinc and others.

Fresh herbs, according to the expert, are a source of flavonoids that help support the normal functioning of the immune system and overall health. In addition, it contains fiber, which is an integral part of a healthy diet for any person.

Radishes are made up primarily of water and fiber, so they are low in calories yet rich in nutrition. Due to the content of special essential oils and glycosides, it has some bactericidal and antiviral properties; improves appetite, promotes the production of gastric juice, normalizes bile secretion, prevents constipation, and so on, – explains the nutritionist-therapist.

According to the expert, chicken eggs are a source of complete protein. They contain all the essential amino acids – those that are not synthesized in the body, but come only with food.

Photo: Unsplash/Anton Nazaretian

— Egg white is called the reference, all others are judged against it. Eggs contain vitamins A, E, D, group B; trace elements calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, selenium and others. They also contain lecithin, which improves the functioning of the brain and the cardiovascular system, promotes better absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K), and increases the body’s resistance to toxic substances, Olga Lushnikova emphasizes.

Sausage is illegal

Doctors consider sausage to be the most insidious component of okroshka, which should be avoided. Most often, housewives use boiled “Doctor’s”.

This offal is harmful to use in gouty arthritis, in violation of the synthesis of purine acids, as well as in problems associated with diabetes, – general practitioner, holder of the status of “Moscow Doctor” Denis Prokofiev warns.

Olga Lushnikova reminds that WHO recommends the complete elimination of processed meat products such as sausages, sausages, ham, and others from the diet.

– There is evidence that even 50 g of these foods daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%. Industrial sausages and frankfurters, as a rule, are made from low-quality meat, they contain cheap vegetable fats, excess salt, flavor enhancers and preservatives, so it is hardly possible to call them useful, says a dietitian-therapist.

Carcinogenic activity, according to Lushnikova, has the additive E 250 (sodium nitrite). It is she who is used to give the sausage the usual pink color. Manufacturers also use this preservative because it inhibits the growth and development of dangerous bacteria, especially at room temperature.

Photo: Global Look Press/CTK/digifoodstock.com

Doctors advise replacing sausage with boiled or baked meat – veal, turkey or chicken. At the same time, the calorie content of the dish and the amount of saturated fat are reduced, while the protein, on the contrary, increases .

But the nutritionist considers potatoes in okroshka to be useful. To prepare a summer dish, chilled boiled or baked tubers are used.

Type 3 resistant starch forms in chilled potatoes (same as in cold rice, pasta, dried bread). Resistant starch is a prebiotic that is not absorbed by the body, but becomes food for beneficial bacteria in the gut. They, during its processing, produce short-chain fatty acids that are extremely useful for our body. Because of this, resistant starch helps improve digestion, lowers blood sugar, regulates appetite, improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammatory responses in the body, and even reduces the risk of colorectal cancer , explains Olga Lushnikova.

Meanwhile, according to Lyudmila Mykityuk, boiled potatoes contain a high content of simple carbohydrates that increase the level of glucose. Perhaps this is what makes you want to eat okroshka again and again, which is especially undesirable for those who are overweight.

Kvass or kefir

Discussions about how to pour okroshka are sometimes more fierce than political battles. According to Olga Lushnikova, natural kvass contains vitamins of group B, vitamin C and nicotinic acid (vitamin PP), enzymes, amino acids and weak organic acids (for example, lactic and acetic).

Photo: Global Look Press/Komsomolskaya Pravda

It improves skin condition and digestion, beneficially influencing the intestinal microflora, strengthens blood vessels, tones the body as a whole, — says the expert.

According to Lyudmila Mykityuk, okroshka on kvass gives a long feeling of satiety due to its rich composition, and also accelerates metabolism, prevents the formation of cholesterol plaques and contains almost no fat.

But experts warn that in the manufacture of even the most “correct” kvass, in any case, sugar is used. Therefore, people with obesity and diabetes need to be more careful with it.

— Additionally, it should be noted that kvass causes fermentation in the intestines. It can lead to the development of flatulence, provoke gastrointestinal diseases, namely peptic ulcer, diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome. Kvass, which we buy in stores, is a carbonated drink with a number of additives, which makes it quite high in calories. That is why it can lead to weight gain. Homemade kvass, made on the basis of wort, in large quantities also increases problems with the gastrointestinal tract, says Denis Prokofiev.

According to doctors, if we want to minimize the side effects of okroshka, then we need to make a choice all the same in the direction of a dish filled with kefir. Dairy products are excellent for supporting digestion and are good for the health of the gut microbiome.

Photo: Global Look Press/CTK/digifoodstock.com

— Okroshka on kefir contains many useful acids, trace elements and probiotics, which are important for proper bowel function. Kefir is a good source of protein, so this dish is good for those who want to build muscle. Thanks to this okroshka, digestion and metabolism are improved, explains Lyudmila Mykityuk.

However, a dish prepared with kefir is undesirable for people prone to gastric disorders. Ayran fermented milk drink, according to Lyudmila Mykityuk, is easily digested and does not cause bloating. At the same time, the benefits of such okroshka for losing weight are undeniable. This dish relieves hunger for a long time, normalizes digestion and intestinal microflora. In addition, ayran okroshka contains calcium and helps improve the condition of bones and teeth.

– In terms of the minimum number of calories, the ideal dish is okroshka with mineral water. But the carbon dioxide included in its composition can have an irritating effect on the gastrointestinal mucosa, says Denis Prokofiev.

Sense of proportion

Okroshka lovers honestly admit that they can eat this dish in large quantities, and even with an additive. But in vain. Doctors often face problems in patients on the background of drinking summer soup. They usually complain about disruption of the gastrointestinal tract.

— We are seeing an exacerbation of chronic gastroduodenitis, diverticulosis, gastrointestinal ulcers, and flatulence. For people suffering from liver diseases, gallbladder problems, urolithiasis, this dish is simply contraindicated. I don’t want to scare, but okroshka can even lead to an acute attack of gouty arthritis, but I have not come across such patients. To do this, you need to eat soup for several days in a row, Denis Prokofiev comments.

Photo: commons.wikimedia.org/Leonid Dzhepko

The general practitioner draws attention to the fact that okroshka is not a dish that provides the required amount of daily calories. It can be called a kind of food aperitif, greatly increasing appetite. By the way, kvass added to okroshka especially possesses this property. So in order to get enough, people unwittingly eat at the table more than they need.
