Do h pylori cause fatigue. The Harmful Effects of H. Pylori: How to Overcome Fatigue, Anemia, and Other Symptoms
How does H. pylori cause fatigue? Discover the link between this common bacterial infection and chronic health issues like anemia and skin problems. Get the facts and learn how to treat H. pylori effectively.
The Link Between H. Pylori and Chronic Fatigue
H. pylori, or Helicobacter pylori, is a bacterial infection that can have far-reaching effects on overall health. As Lizette’s case illustrates, this common gut infection can be the root cause of persistent fatigue, skin problems, irregular periods, and even chronic iron deficiency anemia.
When H. pylori takes hold in the stomach, it can disrupt the production of stomach acid, which is crucial for proper iron absorption. This leads to a cycle of anemia that is difficult to break, even with iron supplementation. Additionally, the inflammation caused by H. pylori can contribute to feelings of fatigue, as the body redirects energy resources to fight the infection.
Recognizing the Symptoms of H. Pylori Infection
In addition to chronic fatigue and anemia, H. pylori can manifest in a variety of other symptoms, including:
- Skin problems like acne, melasma, and other breakouts
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Sensitivity to cold, with cold hands and feet
- Digestive issues like bloating, heartburn, and stomach pain
If you’re experiencing a combination of these symptoms, it’s important to work with a healthcare provider to test for and address any underlying H. pylori infection.
The Importance of Proper Diagnosis and Treatment
As Lizette’s case demonstrates, addressing the root cause of her symptoms – the H. pylori infection – was crucial for her recovery. Many healthcare providers may overlook or misdiagnose H. pylori, instead treating the individual symptoms without addressing the underlying issue.
Proper testing, usually through a breath test or endoscopy, is essential for confirming an H. pylori diagnosis. Once identified, the infection can be treated with a combination of antibiotics and other therapies to restore gut health and address the associated symptoms.
Incorporating Gut-Healing Strategies
In addition to targeted treatment for H. pylori, incorporating gut-healing strategies can also be beneficial for supporting overall health and well-being. This may include:
- Adopting a nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet
- Taking probiotics and other gut-supportive supplements
- Practicing stress-management techniques like meditation or yoga
- Ensuring adequate sleep and rest
By addressing the underlying H. pylori infection and supporting overall gut health, many individuals like Lizette have been able to overcome chronic fatigue, anemia, and other persistent health issues.
The Importance of Gut Health for Overall Wellness
Lizette’s story highlights the significant impact that gut health can have on our overall well-being. When the gut is out of balance, it can manifest in a wide range of symptoms that may seem unrelated, from fatigue and skin problems to hormonal imbalances and chronic anemia.
By recognizing the role of H. pylori and other gut imbalances, and taking a comprehensive approach to addressing them, individuals can often find relief from long-standing health issues and reclaim their energy, vitality, and quality of life.
Empowering Patients to Take Control of Their Health
One of the key takeaways from Lizette’s experience is the importance of being an active participant in your own healthcare. Too often, patients are dismissed or given quick-fix solutions that fail to address the root cause of their problems.
By advocating for thorough testing, working collaboratively with healthcare providers, and being open to exploring alternative therapies, individuals can take a more proactive role in restoring their gut health and overall wellbeing. This empowerment can be a game-changer in overcoming chronic health challenges.
Conclusion
The story of Lizette and her journey to overcoming fatigue, skin issues, and chronic anemia highlights the critical importance of gut health and the potential impact of H. pylori infection. By addressing the root cause of her symptoms, Lizette was able to regain her energy, vitality, and overall sense of wellness.
This case study serves as a powerful reminder that the gut plays a central role in our overall health and that by taking a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to gut health, individuals can often find relief from a wide range of persistent health concerns.

Today I spoke with Lizette. She was suffering with fatigue, skin breakouts, irregular periods, and feeling cold. She also had chronic iron anemia. We found an H. pylori bacterial infection in the stomach, which appeared to be the root cause of her problems. Treating this led to an improvement in all of her symptoms. This was a great example of how important one’s gut health is.

Dr. Michael Ruscio, DC: This is Dr. Ruscio, DC. I’m here with Lizette, who has had an interesting couple of things that we’ve uncovered. When she first came in, fatigue was an issue, skin clarity, irregular periods, and feeling of cold, oftentimes in the hands. And also, well, the skin we talked about not being great.
So one of the things that she had reported was this chronic anemia that just kept coming back and coming back and coming back. And her Kaiser doctors would put her on some iron for a little while. Things would get regular. And then, a little while later, a few months later, everything would come back.
Lizette: Yes, for many years ago, since 2004.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: Yeah, so this repeat anemia that wouldn’t go away.
Lizette: Yes.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: So we found the anemia. We’ve been treating the anemia. But the other thing that we found along with this that I think explains where the anemia comes from is a H. pylori infection in the stomach. And we’ve been treating the H. pylori along with the anemia. And it’s like everything came together for you.
Lizette: Yes.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: And I think pretty much all of your symptoms are gone at this point.
Lizette: Yes, feeling great.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: And one of the dots I wanted to connect was because H. pylori can shut down acid production in the stomach, and acid is needed to absorb iron. The reason why there was this inability to absorb iron chronically was likely because of the H. pylori bacteria damaging the stomach’s ability to secrete acid, and therefore absorb the iron. So what I’m anticipating we’ll see is you won’t notice that in a year from now when we repeat some of the blood work, the anemia comes right back.
But how about things that you’ve noticed? You’ve noticed a number of things over the last 30 days. Do you want to share any insights with things that you’ve noticed in your own body? And how you felt?
Lizette: Yeah. So at the beginning, I felt a little worse because it was part of cleaning everything out. And I just feel great now. I’m feeling really, really good. I just wake up in the morning and can do my things. Can go with my life. And just not feeling tired. So it’s amazing.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: And your nose was feeling really cold, you were saying, right?
Lizette: Yes, it was my nose, it was my feet, and my hands extremely cold, even summertime. And I was always wondering, “What is wrong?”
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: Sure.
Lizette: And they will, and Kaiser, they will give me always the wrong things. They never treat me for what I really have.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: Sure. And your energy is better.
Lizette: Mmmhmm. Yes, a lot better. And also, my skin is. It’s amazing. I’ve been dealing with acne, with melasma, with a lot of stuff for the last two years.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: And it got a little worse the first week like you were saying, right? Your skin also got worse.
Lizette: Yes, yes, it got worse. And–
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: Which you see sometimes when things die in the gut. And they come out.
Lizette: I guess it’s good to know that it gets worse, it’s a sign that it’s going to—
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: It’s a sign you’re cleaning some stuff out.
Lizette: Yes.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: Yeah, yeah.
Lizette: So just feel great now.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: Good, good.
Lizette: Yes.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: So we’re going to continue to monitor her. If we see any other interesting stuff, we’ll keep everyone posted. But this is an interesting case. It shows you how some simple detective work back to the gut can figure out why. For example, in this case, it was a chronic anemia that never really responded. So, Lizette, thank you for talking with us.
Lizette: Thank you.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: All right, cool.
Lizette: Thank you so much.
Dr. Ruscio, DC.: Thank you.

How Functional Medicine and the Paleo Diet Can Address H. Pylori
A majority of world’s population have H. Pylori bacteria living in their stomach. This damaging bacterium has been revealed to be the main source of fatigue and other common health complaints. H. Pylori invades and damages the stomach’s protective mucus layer, thereby leaving your stomach susceptible to ulcers.
The Harmful Effects of H. Pylori
H. Pylori is commonly transferred by sharing food and drinks with other people, and multiplies very quickly through the saliva. Those with a weak immune system and other health issues are particularly susceptible to contamination.
H. Pylori is the primary cause of poor digestion and stomach ulcers. This bacterium impedes on the stomach’s capability to manufacture mucus, and irritates the inner lining of the stomach. The irritation turns out to be so severe that it leads to the pathogenesis of stomach ulcers. More than 80% of gastric ulcers are due to H. Pylori. This bacterium, if left untreated, can lead to stomach cancer.
H. Pylori Causes Fatigue
H. Pylori can cause fatigue by blocking your ability to absorb vitamin B12 and iron. As we know, the two common causes of anemia are a vitamin B12 or an iron deficiency. This means that if you’re taking B12 and iron for anemia but still aren’t seeing results, you might have an H. Pylori infection.
Role of Functional Medicine
The gut walls possess more than 70% of the cells that build up your immune system, and a whole host of bacteria. When you think about gut bacteria, you might be thinking of the symptoms that are manifested by gut imbalances. It’s true that a gut imbalance can negatively affect your ability to digest important nutrients. However, by making conscious diet choices, you can help overthrow the bad bacteria and promote the proliferation of the good guys!
Role of Paleo Diet
The Paleo diet focuses on eating natural food that is extensively available. If you’re suffering from H. Pylori infection, here are some great foods to incorporate into your diet:
- Quality meats – Such as grass-fed beef and lamb, and wild sockeye salmon.
- Eggs – Pastured eggs, the yolks will be a deep, rich yellow-orange color.
- Fresh Organic Vegetables and Berries
- Natural oils –Avocado and Coconut oil are some of the best.
If you’re suffering from any digestive issues or fatigue, addressing the health of your gut with the help of a functional medicine practitioner should be your first course of action.
By treating any gut infections and optimizing your diet, you can reduce your symptoms by addressing the root issues.

In this article you will find a list of diseases of the stomach, as well as information about the symptoms of Helicobacter pylori, a common disease that causes various diseases of the stomach and intestines. Find out what symptoms indicate an infection, how to diagnose and treat this disease.
The gastrointestinal tract is a complex system that includes several organs, and the presence of an imbalance in it can cause many diseases. One such disease is the bacterial infection Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which attacks the lining of the stomach and duodenum.
Although most people do not experience symptoms of H. pylori, serious health problems can develop in a subset of the population. This infection can cause gastritis (inflammation of the stomach) or stomach and duodenal ulcers, which can lead to chronic diseases and even stomach cancer if not treated promptly.
In this article, we will look at stomach diseases, list their symptoms, and study in detail the characteristics of the H. pylori bacterium in order to understand how to deal with this disease and what needs to be done to prevent it.
Stomach problems: how to know if you have Helicobacter pylori
Stomach problems can occur in anyone who does not eat well, is stressed or drinks alcohol frequently. Already at the beginning of the appearance of problems with the stomach, it is worth paying attention to symptoms that may indicate the presence of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that lives in the stomach and can cause serious illness.
What symptoms may indicate the presence of Helicobacter pylori?
- Abdominal pain – most often felt in the epigastric region and can be either sharp or dull;
- Heartburn and belching – occur a few hours after eating and are most often disturbed at night;
- Nausea and vomiting – especially common in the morning, on an empty stomach;
- Change in taste preferences – possibly decreased appetite, aversion to fatty or spicy foods;
- Dizziness and weakness – may occur due to a decrease in hemoglobin levels;
- Peptic ulcer – Helicobacter pylori can cause gastric or duodenal ulcers.
If at least a few symptoms appear, you should consult a doctor and be tested for the presence of Helicobacter pylori. Early detection of the bacterium and timely treatment will help to avoid serious complications and maintain health.
Helicobacter pylori: definition and symptoms
What is Helicobacter pylori?
Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium that normally lives in the human stomach. It can cause a number of diseases such as gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and stomach cancer.
The bacterium Helicobacter pylori is spread from person to person through the oral route, such as kissing or sharing a dish.
For most people, Helicobacter pylori does not cause any symptoms and is not dangerous. However, it can cause various unpleasant symptoms and diseases in some people.
- Symptoms of Helicobacter pylori
Helicobacter pylori can cause the following symptoms:
- Abdominal pain or severe stomach discomfort
- Feeling of fullness in the stomach, especially after eating
- Feeling of nausea or vomiting
- Chest pain, which can switch to the neck or arms
- Abnormal weight loss
see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
How does Helicobacter pylori get infected?
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that lives in a protective layer on the walls of the human stomach. Everyone can be at risk of contracting this bacterium, but the most vulnerable groups are children and people with weakened immune systems.
The main routes of infection for Helicobacter pylori are:
- Food and water contaminated with the bacterium.
- Domestic contact, including kissing and sharing dishes.
- Blood via blood transfusion if the donor has been infected.
It should not be forgotten that Helicobacter pylori can be present in the same family, and infection can often occur within the family.
However, not all people are at risk of contracting Helicobacter pylori. Available persistent protective factors may include a strong immune system, rich nutrition, and some plant-based resins.
What diseases can be caused by Helicobacter pylori?
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that lives in the mucous membrane of the human stomach. It can cause several different diseases associated with the gastrointestinal tract.
Another disease associated with Helicobacter pylori is gastric ulcer. An ulcer is a crack in the wall of the stomach that can cause severe pain, bleeding, and other serious complications.
In addition, Helicobacter pylori may be associated with the development of stomach cancer. This is a rare but very dangerous disease that can lead to death if not detected and treated in time.
If you experience any gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or bowel changes, see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
Gastric ulcer
Gastric ulcer is a disease that is manifested by a violation of the integrity of the gastric mucosa. The main symptom is severe pain in the epigastrium, which occurs after eating or at night. Nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and possibly bleeding from the ulcer may also occur.
One of the causes of stomach ulcers is Helicobacter pylori infection. This microorganism can cause the development of ulcers in the gastric mucosa.
Diagnosis of gastric ulcer includes gastroscopy with biopsy and testing for the presence of Helicobacter pylori. Treatment may include antibiotic therapy to eliminate the infection, as well as drugs to reduce gastric acid production and protect the mucous membrane.
- The main factors that contribute to the development of stomach ulcers are certain types of medications, smoking, alcohol, stress and unhealthy diet.
- In addition, people who have close relatives with peptic ulcer disease may also be at risk.
Symptoms of gastric ulcer Description
Epigastric pain | Severe abdominal pain that often occurs after eating |
Nausea and vomiting | May occur after meals or at night |
Heartburn | Burning sensation in the chest, which may be due to backflow of contents from the stomach into the esophagus |
Possible ulcer bleeding in the stomach |
Gastritis: symptoms and treatment
Gastritis is an inflammatory disease of the gastric mucosa, which can be caused by various causes, such as Helicobacter pylori infection, stress, alcohol and some other factors.
To diagnose gastritis, you need to see a doctor who will prescribe a gastroscopy and other necessary tests. Treatment of gastritis depends on its form and type, but usually includes the use of antisecretory agents, gastric drugs, agents to improve the protective properties of the gastric mucosa, and other measures.
It is important to remember that gastritis can become chronic and cause various complications if it is not treated promptly and the doctor’s recommendations regarding diet, diet and lifestyle are not followed.
Stomach cancer: the most dangerous disease
Stomach cancer is one of the most dangerous and rapidly developing oncological diseases. The figures show that every year about 750,000 people in the world die from stomach cancer. The risk of stomach cancer increases with age, as well as in the presence of a number of factors: gastritis, peptic ulcer, hereditary predisposition, smoking, drinking alcohol, and malnutrition.
For the diagnosis of stomach cancer, a comprehensive examination is used, which includes gastroscopy, EGD, ultrasound, MRI, PCT, tumor markers, biopsy. Treatment of stomach cancer includes surgical removal of the tumor, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Early diagnosis of stomach cancer gives a chance for a complete cure, so it is important to have regular check-ups and monitor your health.
What symptoms indicate the presence of Helicobacter pylori?
Helicobacter pylori can cause many different symptoms that can be very unpleasant and interfere with a person’s normal life. The most common symptoms include:
- Pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen;
- Feeling of fullness and heaviness in the stomach after eating;
- Heartburn and painful belching;
- Hypersensitivity and irritability of the stomach;
- Bad taste in the mouth and bad breath;
- Bad mood and feeling tired;
- Flatulence and hair loss.
However, some people may be infected with Helicobacter pylori without experiencing any symptoms, so you can be sure only after being examined by a doctor.
Table: Symptoms that may indicate the presence of Helicobacter pyloriSymptom Description
Pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen | Described as holding, stitching, or aching pain after eating. |
Heartburn and painful belching | Occurs due to increased acidity in the stomach caused by Helicobacter pylori. |
Bad taste and bad breath | Caused by reflux of gastric contents into the mouth due to infection. |
Diagnostic methods for Helicobacter pylori
Stool antigen test
Stool antigen test can detect the presence of Helicobacter pylori in the body. This method is unobtrusive, safe and relatively affordable, but its accuracy is not always sufficient. False positive and false negative results are also possible.
Breath test
The breath test for Helicobacter pylori is based on the detection of carbon dioxide in the exhaled air after taking a special drug. This method is considered more accurate than fecal analysis, but requires specialized equipment and patient preparation.
Gastroscopy
During a gastroscopy, the doctor will take a sample of tissue from the stomach for a biopsy and subsequent examination for the presence of Helicobacter pylori. This method is considered quite accurate, but quite invasive and can cause discomfort to the patient.
Blood for antibodies
Blood for antibodies to Helicobacter pylori can be used to detect the presence of infection in the body. This method is also not very accurate and does not always allow to determine the activity of the infection. It should also be borne in mind that antibodies can remain in the blood even after the infection has been cured.
Accelerated Urease Test
The Accelerated Urease Test is based on the detection of secretion of urease from the stomach. This method is fast and accurate, but requires specialized equipment and a medical facility.
Treatment of Helicobacter pylori: effective methods
Helicobacter pylori is a dangerous bacterial species that can lead to the development of a number of diseases of the stomach and intestines. Therefore, the treatment of this microorganism is very important.
Various methods are used to treat Helicobacter pylori:
- Antibiotics. They are the main therapy in the fight against Helicobacter pylori. Your doctor may prescribe a course of amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, and other antibiotics. At the same time, it is important to take medicines strictly as prescribed by the doctor.
- Drugs to reduce stomach acid. They help reduce irritation of the gastric mucosa and speed up the healing of ulcers. The composition of such drugs includes omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole and others.
- Probiotics. They help to restore the balance of the intestinal microflora, which can be disturbed after taking antibiotics. Bifidobacteria and lactobacilli are most commonly used.
- Diet. Proper nutrition is important during the treatment of Helicobacter pylori. It is recommended to reduce the consumption of spicy, fatty, smoked, sweet and alcoholic beverages. At the same time, it is recommended to increase the number of first courses, dairy products, fruits and vegetables in the diet.
Helicobacter pylori treatment should be carried out under medical supervision. This will help to avoid possible complications and ensure a quick recovery of health.
How to prevent Helicobacter pylori infection?
Helicobacter pylori infection can lead to the development of dangerous diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, so it is important to prevent infection. There are several ways to prevent Helicobacter pylori infection that will help protect the body from the adverse effects of bacteria.
- Practice personal hygiene . To avoid infection with Helicobacter pylori infection, it is necessary to wash your face regularly, use individual hygiene items (towels, toothbrushes), and also monitor the condition of hygiene products and the health of others.
- Try to eat healthy . In order for the body to be protected from Helicobacter pylori infection, it is necessary to eat high quality food. Do not abuse fatty, fried, spicy and smoked foods. Prefer fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products and low-fat meat.
- Pay attention to the state of the body . In case of stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite and other symptoms, you should consult a specialist for advice. Early detection of H. pylori infection can help in the treatment and prevention of its consequences.
Following these recommendations, you can protect the body from infection with Helicobacter pylori and prevent the development of serious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
