5 Home Remedies for Constipation

When it comes to being “regular,” there really isn’t a standard. The definition of normal bowel movements differs from person to person.

But regardless of whether you visit the bathroom three times a day or three times a week, the symptoms of constipation are usually the same for everyone. If you aren’t having as many bowel movements as you normally do, or if your stool is hard, dry, or painful, you’re probably experiencing a bout of constipation.

Fortunately, the condition is rarely a sign of serious disease and usually can be cleared up without drastic measures. In fact, there are several home remedies for constipation that can help alleviate the discomfort.

While signs accompanying constipation such as abdominal pain, bloody stool, or unexpected weight loss should be brought to a doctor’s attention, for run-of-the-mill constipation bouts, these non-drug constipation remedies just might do the trick.

Fish Oil

Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to play a role in a large number of bodily functions, including digestion. Some studies have shown that omega-3s can be helpful in managing symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which include constipation.

Fish oil, derived either from diet or in supplement form, is a rich source of these fatty acids. Specifically, cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, halibut, sardines, tuna, and herring contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Fish oil supplements also contain EPA and DHA.

As is the case with all dietary supplements, fish oil supplements should be taken with caution. High doses of any omega-3 fatty acids can increase bleeding risk, so it is especially important that people who bruise easily or have bleeding disorders be careful when using this home remedy for constipation. Blood-thinning medications also put people at risk for this same reason. In addition to blood thinners, diabetes and cholesterol medications, some steroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may produce possible adverse reactions when combined with omega-3 fatty acids like those found in fish oil.

Another downside to using this constipation remedy is that fish oil can cause gas and bloating, and in some cases diarrhea. And it is important to know the source of fish oil before using it as a constipation remedy, as some fish may contain heavy metals such as mercury and other contaminants.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a yellowish liquid that can be used as a home remedy for constipation because of its laxative property. One study in Nigeria found that oral castor oil helped children with chronic constipation to move their bowels. An upside to castor oil for constipation is that it works quickly.

For that same reason, however, castor oil should be cautiously administered as a constipation remedy. It should not be taken at bedtime, due to its quick effects. Another downside to this constipation remedy is that it tastes bad, so it is recommended that the castor oil be chilled and mixed with a sweetener such as orange juice. Castor oil is generally considered safe, but it can lead to overdose if taken in large amounts.


One of the best known home remedies for constipation is fiber. The recommended dosage – 20 to 35 grams per day – can be found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Fiber is also a convenient constipation remedy since most people already have these items in their homes. Fiber supplements such as psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel) can be used as well.

The one downside to using fiber as a constipation home remedy is that it can actually make constipation worse if you don’t drink plenty of water with it. For the fiber to help alleviate constipation, it needs fluids to help move it through the digestive system. Fiber derived from supplements especially must be taken with water in order to avoid worsening constipation.


Herbal therapy is one of the oldest forms of constipation treatments – numerous cultures around the world have used herbs to cure constipation for thousands of years. This tried-and-true constipation therapy is generally divided into two categories: bulk-forming and stimulant laxatives.

Commonly used bulk-forming herbal laxatives include flaxseed, fenugreek, and barley. If you opt for flaxseed as a constipation remedy, you should remember that flaxseed oil is different from the actual flaxseeds, which are available as whole or crushed seeds; flaxseed oil is not a constipation remedy. Stimulant herbs for constipation include senna, Cascara segrada, and aloe.

One reason to think twice before using herbs for constipation is that the stimulant laxatives, particularly aloe, can cause cramping. Herbalists typically recommend a less powerful stimulant like senna before suggesting aloe. Along with side effects, herbal therapies for constipation can potentially interact with medications and supplements. Always speak with a qualified health care practitioner before taking any herbs.


Probiotics are the bacteria inside our intestines that promote digestion. Examples of probiotics are Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Sacchromyces boulardi, and they are available in supplement form and some foods, such as yogurt. Some studies have shown that probiotics are an effective non-drug cure for constipation. Like fiber, probiotics are a relatively easy home cure for constipation because they are available in foods that many families already have in the refrigerator.

However, the jury is still out on probiotics for constipation. Recently, Polish researchers conducted a systematic review of trials on the effect of probiotics on constipation and concluded that there was not yet strong enough evidence to support their recommendation.

Cod Liver Oil Benefits as a Laxative

Cod liver oil is usually taken for heart health.

Constipation is characterized by hard stools that are difficult to pass. Stool softeners and bulk-forming and stimulant laxatives help alleviate constipation in different ways. Lubricant laxatives, such as mineral oil, make it easier to pass a bowel movement. These treatments can be harsh and are not intended for long-term use. Cod liver oil is another fat that you may want to try for similar benefits. However, the chemical structure of cod liver oil makes it ineffective as a laxative.

Lubricant Laxatives

According to the American Cancer Society, mineral oil coats your intestinal surface, preventing the reabsorption of water from your gastrointestinal tract. This softens the stool by keeping water in your intestines and making it easier to go to the bathroom. The reason mineral oil is an effective laxative is that it is able to line your intestines without getting absorbed into your body. Most fats in your diet, including cod liver oil, are broken down during digestion and used by your body for various functions. The chemical composition of mineral oil makes it effective for laxative purposes. In contrast, cod liver oil is mostly absorbed by your body.

Cod Liver Oil Absorption

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations World Health Organization states that only about 2 percent of mineral oil is absorbed by your body. Cod liver oil behaves differently in your body. Cod liver oil is an unsaturated fat with essential omega-3 fatty acids. When you consume cod liver oil from fish or supplements, it is broken down by your digestive tract and absorbed into your bloodstream. From there, it travels to different parts of your body, providing energy and other health benefits, particularly for your heart and cholesterol levels.


Overdosing on cod liver oil can affect your GI tract and cause loose stools. While this may temporarily relieve constipation, high doses of cod liver oil are dangerous and should not be used for this purpose. If you chose to take cod liver oil for general health benefits, try supplementing with 1 to 2 grams per day. This will not do much for constipation, but it may protect your heart and reduce your chances of negative side effects, such as uncontrolled bleeding. If you experiencing diarrhea from cod liver oil supplements, you are probably taking too much. Talk to your doctor before starting a supplement.

Constipation Treatment

To prevent constipation, consume a healthy diet adequate in fiber and fluids. If you have constipation, mineral oil is an effective laxative to try. Mineral oil may cause you to malabsorb essential fatty acids and the fat soluble vitamins E, D, A and K. Supplementing with cod liver oil can help replenish these important fats, especially if the supplement is fortified with fat-soluble vitamins. While cod liver oil is not usually recommended as a laxative, it may support good nutrition during laxative use. Talk to your doctor if you experience recurring constipation and find yourself depending on laxatives.

Chronically Constipated? It Could Be a Symptom of Intestinal Dysbiosis

A proper poop is dependent on a healthy gut. And if you regularly struggle with constipation or diarrhea (as well as other symptoms, like indigestion, reflux, bloating, or excessive gas), it could be a sign that you gut is not functioning optimally.

In medicine, we use the term intestinal dysbiosis, which means that the populations of the different gut bacteria that colonize the stomach have become imbalanced. Today, we know that these gut bacteria dictate a huge range of not just bowel-related disorders — like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and chronic constipation — but also our weight, blood sugar levels and immune response to a wide range of chronic diseases (1, 2).

The composition of our gut flora depends on a variety of factors, including genetics, age, and environment. Diet, however, plays an especially big role.

Let’s focus on two stool-facilitating nutrients that play a critical role in promoting good intestinal health: fiber and fish oil.

The Digestive Benefits of Fibers

Almost every constipation-related article talks about the importance of eating enough fiber — and with good reason. Fiber has a profound impact on our digestive system.

First and foremost, fiber promotes good microbial health. Gut bacteria feed on fiber through fermentation, breaking them down in the digestive system. During this fermentation process, the bacteria create short-chained fatty acids (SCFAs) that help support the integrity of the cells in the stomach. SCFAs also influence our metabolism, appetite, and immune response (3).

Oats are an excellent source of beta-glucan soluble fibers. 

How Soluble and Insoluble Fiber Function

As I explain in Carbo-Confusion Unraveled, the term “fiber” encompasses a number of carbohydrates, and different types of fiber impact our digestive system in unique ways. For instance, beta-glucan soluble fibers (found in oats and barley) are easily fermented by the gut bacteria (3). Beta-glucan fiber is also known to bind together with cholesterol, thereby helping to remove it from the body (4).

Insoluble fibers, on the other hand, are generally not fermented by the gut bacteria. Still, insoluble fiber (which can be found in foods like wheat bran) is important since it helps push food through the intestinal tract. Certain types of insoluble fiber, like psyllium, also bind together with water, to help soften the stool. Both of these elements have a natural laxative effect (5).

Why Fiber-Rich Foods Are So Important

Because different types of fibers produce a varied effect on our digestive system and feed different bacteria species, eating a variety is best for promoting microbial health.

Unfortunately, thanks to the large quantities of processed foods favored in the Western diet, most of us don’t get enough fiber. While studies show massive improvements in microbial diversity when people consume more than 30 grams of fiber daily, most Americans only get between 12-18 grams on average (3).

With these kinds of numbers, it’s not surprising that rates of intestinal dysbiosis and related diseases (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome) are on the rise (6).

The Benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oil for Constipation

Since oils act as natural lubricants, most varieties will help get the “ball rolling” in the restroom. For better bowel movements, however, omega-3 fish oils have clear advantages to other types.

Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase

Firstly, fish oil is known to increase the production of intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) (7). IAP plays a crucial role in maintaining gut homeostasis and reducing inflammation in the intestines. Researchers have also found a link between reduced IAP concentrations and conditions like IBS (8).

Antimicrobial Properties

Secondly, full-spectrum fish oil has antimicrobial properties that help keep certain endotoxin-producing bacteria species from wreaking havoc in the gut (7). Since endotoxins cause inflammation, blocking their build-up helps to reduce inflammation in the intestines.

Healthier Gut Flora

Finally, fish oil also promotes a better composition of gut bacteria. For instance, in clinical studies of individuals with IBS, the researchers found that omega-3 supplementation increased the population of certain healthy bacterial species. What’s more, it decreased the levels of other harmful bacterial groups, resulting in a healthier microbiome (7).

Can Fish Oil Cause Diarrhea?

If omega-3 fatty acids can help with constipation, can fish oil be too effective and cause diarrhea? Be aware that consuming large quantities of fish oil, or taking a poor-quality fish oil supplement, can sometimes contribute to unpleasant gastrointestinal issues and loose stools.

That being said, a number of studies show that fish oil supplementation can also reduce the incidence of diarrhea (9). For instance, one study feeding hospitalized patients a combination of fish oil and fiber found significantly lower rates of diarrhea in the omega-3 and fiber group compared to the control (10).

Other Tips for Producing Healthy Poops

Besides consuming more omega-3 fish oil and fiber, there are also other tactics that you can use to promote good gut health and keep the intestinal system moving.

1. Cut Out Unnecessary Antibiotics

Antibiotics not only kill off harmful gut bacteria, but also health-promoting bacterial populations in your gut for years to come. This is why antibiotic use is often linked with both constipation and diarrhea.

2. Avoid Processed Foods

Processed foods are typically devoid of fibers and omega-3s, as well as rich in refined sugars and unhealthy fats. These kinds of foods promote intestinal dysbiosis by stimulating the growth of harmful bacterial populations and inflammation.

3. Get Regular Exercise

Exercise helps to stimulate peristaltic contractions. These wavelike, squeezing contractions help push the fecal mass through the colon. Plus, exercising regularly seems to have a beneficial impact on the microbiome too (11).

4.  Drink Enough Water

Since water helps keep bowel movements soft and easy to pass, continue to sip water throughout the day.

Staying hydrated is an affordable way to make life a little easier on the toilet.

5. Pay Attention to Your Stool Signals

One of the most important aspects of defecating has nothing to do with lifestyle or nutrition.

It has to do with listening to the ‘signal’ that tells you to leave everything you’re doing and head for the nearest toilet.

Like everything in life that’s worth doing, you have to make time for bathroom breaks and respect your body’s needs. While it might not be convenient, simply take a break and go to the restroom when you feel an urge. If you continuously ignore the signal, your body — like a jilted lover — closes down the communication channel and says, “Sorry. You don’t listen, so why should I make the effort to talk to you?” In other words, you shut down the nerve reflex that facilitates pooping, increasing the tendency for future constipation.

What Should My Poop Look Like?

As a physician, I was always amazed when I questioned patients about their defecations and they responded by saying: “I don’t know — I don’t look at my stools.”

Now maybe I am too anal, but the examination of a stool can reveal a lot about what is going on inside of a person. Being able to give your physician a description of the color, consistency, and frequency of bowel movements can be helpful in providing a diagnosis. So always be sure to take a peek before flushing away a wealth of information.

The Bristol stool chart gives an overview over various stool consistencies and an assessment of what is considered normal. Plus, you get to see what constipation versus diarrhea looks like.

There are also charts that provide an overview over various stool colors. Normally, stools are light to dark brown in color. If your stools are black, yellow or white, you may need to seek medical help. Streaks of red on the outside of your stool usually indicate that you have hemorrhoids in the lower digestive tract, but a physician should be able to help you diagnose the issue.

How Often Should I Be Pooping?

If you take fish oil, enjoy a high fiber diet, drink lots of liquids, and exercise regularly, chances are that you’ve mastered the art of producing a proper bowel movement. Still, what does it mean to be ‘regular’?

While most people defecate once a day, the so-called ‘normal’ interval between defecations varies greatly. Constipation is defined as having fewer than three bowel movements every seven days. Some people are able to produce two to three stools a day, which is still considered within the normal range.

Given such a wide definition for ‘regularity,’ the most important thing to remember is that consistency is key.

While most sources quote that fish oil is beneficial to those suffering from constipation, a contradictory opinion is also existent.

What Is Fish Oil?

Extracted from the fatty tissues of oily fish, fish oil contains various beneficial chemicals like DHA, EPA and most importantly, omega 3 fatty acids. By consuming a number of toxin-infested fishes, these predators accumulate lots of toxins. As a result, these toxins are passed into fish oil and consequently to those who take this supplement.

The purpose of this study is to see what effects the dietary supplement called Omega-3 or “Fish Oil” and it has on your colon, if any. Omega-3 (Fish Oil) is available in many forms (pills, capsules, liquid) in grocery stores, health food/vitamin stores and drug stores and from eating fish. We would like to learn if different amounts of Fish Oil specifically chosen for you individually change your colon tissue (large intestine). We hope that Fish Oil may be useful in the future as something that may help to prevent colon cancer, but we don’t have any research in humans that shows that yet. We have to do this study first to see if Fish Oil effects the colon. One type of Fish Oil is has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce the risk of heart disease. We are going to test a different Fish Oil supplement made by a company called Nordic Naturals.

The colon lining or “mucosa” comes in contact with all the undigested things we eat or drink as it passes out to waste (stool). Animal studies suggest that fish oil may help the colon lining by reducing colon polyps and therefore colon cancer. We think this happens through chemical changes in the colon lining and also in the blood. The chemicals that we are looking at are called “fatty acids”. We want to see if taking different amounts fish oil chosen for you changes these chemicals (fatty acids) in your colon or your blood. We will assign you a personal “low dose” of fish oil to take for 2 weeks, followed by a “high dose, or maximum” dose for 2 weeks. We will calculate your basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) from your height, weight, age and assess your activity factor. We have a table that then tells us your target low and high dose. Then, based on your blood samples, we figure out which target dose is the one for you that will change these chemicals (fatty acids) by about ½ (50%). We will check how well this process worked by collecting small pieces of colon tissue (biopsies) of the colon before any fish oil and after all the fish oil is consumed. We will also use blood samples to test for these fatty acids and a few others. We are going to collect diet information at several times throughout the study so we can see if the food you eat makes a difference too.

We hope to learn a lot about how fatty acids are metabolized (broken down or used) in the colon directly in combination with Omega-3 supplements.
