Empacho: What is this Latino folk illness about?

By Hope Gillette, Saludify

There are many and varied Latino folk illnesses, one of which is that of empacho, or the warning signs of gastrointestinal food blockage.

Empacho consists of a variety of symptoms including indigestion, vomiting, lack of appetite, diarrhea or constipation.

The University of Washington indicates these symptoms classically describe an intestinal blockage in Western medicine, and the diagnosis for this Latino folk illness is not far off the mark.

What is empacho?

People suffering from empacho are thought to have a bolus of undigested food somewhere in the intestinal tract, though the causes for this are not as in-line with modern medicine as the diagnosis itself.

In the Latino tradition, people with this malady have developed it because:

  • They swallowed gum.
  • They swallowed a lot of saliva.
  • They ate certain foods at the wrong time of day.
  • They were forced to eat.
  • They ate spoiled food.
  • They ate improperly prepared food.
  • They ate too much of a certain food.

In reality, the Mayo Clinic indicates this type of intestinal blockage is rarely caused by the ingestion of a food item or inedible item, but is rather caused by:

  • Intestinal adhesion
  • Hernias
  • Tumors
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Twisting of the intestines
  • Telescoping of the intestines
  • Cancer
  • Impacted feces
  • Diverticulitis
  • Scarring

Latinos who suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) stress after a meal are less likely to truly experience an intestinal blockage unless one of the above underlying conditions is present. Acute onset is likely just GI irritation, which can be easily confused with intestinal blockage due to similar symptoms.
Joe Terry, an emergency medical technician from Ohio, tells Saludify, “Symptoms of an irritated GI system are bloating, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea, which can cause sensations of pain, fullness or urgency to have a bowel movement.

These warning signs can indicate anything from a stomach ulcer to stomach cancer; they do not necessarily mean an individual is suffering from what empacho implies—GI blockage.

What are the traditional treatments for empacho?

According to Rice University, empacho is traditionally diagnosed by a healer who feels the stomach for tenderness and looks for knots in the calf muscles.

As with other Latino folk illnesses, if empacho is suspected, the healer confirms the condition by rolling a fresh chicken egg over the abdomen. If the egg appears to stick to any one particular area, that is where empacho is stemming from.

Remedies for empacho include:

  • Rose petal tea
  • Catnip or catmint tea
  • Wormwood tea
  • Chamomile tea
  • Special warm olive oil back massage

One of the most popular cultural cures for empacho is the administration of lead-based powders such as azarconor greta. These powders are popular for treating empacho in children and are readily available in most markets in Latin American countries like Mexico. Unfortunately, the administration of these powders is not advised because they expose individuals to potentially harmful levels of lead.

Modern treatment of intestinal blockage

“You should see a doctor if you are having severe stomach pain, vomiting, or abnormal bowel movements,” explained Terry.

Only through diagnostic imaging can the cause of an intestinal blockage be determined.

If the blockage is caused by partial impact, sometimes a low-fiber diet is the only needed treatment to help the system clear on its own.

Full impaction, however, often requires surgical intervention. Failure to seek the proper treatment can result in death or the need for emergency intervention.

Case Studies – Empacho – A Gastrointestinal Folk Illness in Latin Communities

Ethical analysis is both a science and an art. As a science, it is not purely theoretical but practical in the sense that one is searching for the right and the good in specific circumstances. As an art, ethical analysis needs to be practiced; it is a skill that can be acquired only by repeatedly performing the unique investigation into the right thing to do. Ethics committees, in particular, practice analysis on mock cases that illustrate different aspects of health care treatment options. Our readers are encouraged to analyze the following case, using the questions as a guide. A commentary on the case appears on page thirty.

Your clinic is located in a largely Hispanic area of the city. You have often treated children whose illnesses have been called empacho by their parents. As Dr. Lee Pachter explains: Empacho is a folk illness that has been described in various Latino ethnic groups, including Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Central Americans. [It has] been described as a condition wherein food or other matter gets stuck to the walls of the stomach or intestines causing an obstruction. It is thought to be caused by dietary indiscretion – often by eating too much food or spoiled food, inappropriate combinations of food, or eating at the wrong time… (Pachter 1994).

A twenty-month old Puerto Rican boy was admitted to the inpatient unit for failure to thrive after a weight loss of 16 kg., associated with a decrease in appetite. Social history was significant in that the mother had limited support and had been out of work for two months because of a back injury. Physician examination showed a thin child without any signs of organic pathology.

The child was admitted to the inpatient unit for dietary and behavior observation. On questioning, the mother expressed the opinion that a possible cause of her child’s weight loss and poor appetite was his eating some pork a few weeks earlier. She believed that the pork was spoiled and caused empacho in her son. She was so certain about this that she and her husband were planning to send for her husband’s mother – a santiquadora, i.e., a folk therapist or healer – who would come to perform the treatment that cures empacho. In the meantime she had brought the child to your clinic.

Folk Illnesses and Remedies in Latino Communities

What is a Folk Illness?

Folk illnesses are health beliefs and practices shaped by the cultural conventions of a specific group of people. Folk illnesses (sometimes also referred to as lay health beliefs) have specific causes, preventions, and cures based on wider theories of illness (e. g., humoral, Ayurvedic, biomedical), but may also include local health beliefs and values not related to the major theories of illness. Because folk illnesses and remedies are shaped by the way people in specific cultural groups think about the body in health and illness, common practices vary significantly from diagnoses and treatments of the modern Western medical community. Folk illnesses tend to carry religious overtones as well as a range of symbolic meanings with social and psychological dimensions. A person suffering from a folk illness is often seen as expressing emotional distress through the physical body. Such distress may arise from conflicts within the family, or from the larger social world that the individual inhabits. Perhaps the patient failed to observe social norms or perform essential rituals. Or maybe his illness has been caused by an evil spirit. Traditional healers within a particular culture are trusted to recognize, interpret, and treat folk illnesses using therapies that are congruent with the particular lay concepts of illness that underpin the condition. It is important to keep in mind that in the US, a family’s belief in specific folk illnesses and traditional healing remedies depends on such factors as ethnicity, national origin, region, and levels of acculturation. In Latino communities in the US, four of the most common folk illnesses are empacho, susto, Mal Ojo (evil eye), and Mollera Caida (fallen fontanelle). A brief description of each is given here followed by some useful links with more extensive and detailed information about Latino folk illnesses and cures. Several books on the subject are also recommended.

Empacho

A form of stomach upset which is believed to be caused by undigested food getting stuck to the walls of the stomach or intestines causing an obstruction. It is thought to result of dietary practices including excessive eating, not chewing food completely, consuming spoiled foods, eating at the wrong time of day, or combining the wrong foods. Symptoms include anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, cramps, and stomachache. Treatment includes dietary restrictions, herbal teas, abdominal massage with warm oil, and pinching the skin on the back and pulling it until it pops. Most treatments for empacho are harmless. However, multiple cases of lead toxicity have been documented among children whose empacho was treated with powdered folk remedies (called greta, azarcòn, or albayalde) containing high concentrations of lead oxide.1-2

Susto

A “fright sickness” is caused by a frightening or traumatic experience that temporarily scares a person’s spirit from their body. Symptoms include chill, lethargy, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and irritability. Culturally stressed adults (women more often than men) are most likely to suffer from susto, although children may also be afflicted. The onset of the disease generally follows a sudden frightening experience such as an accident, a fall, witnessing a relative’s sudden death, or any other potentially dangerous event. Research shows that knowledge of the existence of susto is a major contributing factor in improving the condition. The treatment includes herbal teas, covering the face with a cloth and sprinkling holy water, and spitting a mouthful of water or alcohol into the patient’s face unexpectedly, and cleansing ceremonies called limpieza performed by spiritual healers called curanderos.

Mal de Ojo

Translates into evil eye and is caused by a person with a “strong eye” who admires a child without touching them. This can occur intentionally or unintentionally, and though it sounds as if it is inflicted through malice, opposite is the case. The illness is believed to occur because a spell has been placed on the child by a person who secretly admires and covets him or her. To counteract the effect of the admiration, the admirer must touch the object of such strong admiration. The strong eyes are believed to “heat up” the child’s blood, resulting in symptoms such as fever, inconsolable crying, diarrhea, vomiting, aches and pains and a gassy stomach. Mal Ojo is one of the most commonly reported folk illnesses reported by Mexican parents. Treatment consists of taking a child to a folk healer for herbal remedies and ritual cures such as passing an egg over the body and then placing it in a bowl under the child’s pillow overnight. If the egg is cooked in the morning, then the child had “mal de ojo.” Sometimes a lemon, chili pepper or rue is used in place of an egg. Some Latino parents place an amulet on infants, known as azabache, which is worn on a necklace or bracelet and is believed to protect against mal ojo. One of the most common amulets is an adorned seed that looks like a deer’s eye called ojo de venado. Necklaces and bracelets may place infants at risk for strangulation and other accidents. A safe and culturally sensitive alternative is to pin the azabache on the inside of a garment.3

Mollera Caida

Translates as sunken fontanel and is believed to be caused by pulling a baby away from the breast or bottle too quickly, having the baby fall to the ground or carrying the baby incorrectly. These actions are believed to make a baby’s soft palate sink in so it has trouble feeding and swallowing. Symptoms include poor suck, irritability, sunken eyes, vomiting or diarrhea. Treatments include pushing on the baby’s palate with a finger, holding the baby upside down over a pan of water and slapping the bottoms of his feet, or applying a poultice to the fontanel. The symptoms of mollera caida should alert the clinician to possible severe dehydration. Treatments involving holding babies upside down can be dangerous or even fatal and parents should be made aware of this.4 References for This Article: 1.) Bose V. Vashnita, K. O’Loughlin BJ. Cultural Competency – MUSC

Mexican-Americans and other Latin Cultures

Specific Folk Illnesses

Below is a listing of common folk illnesses in the Mexican-American community. 9 Other Latin American cultures may share beliefs in these illnesses, or have their own variations.

Caida de Mollera, or fallen fontanelleThis affects babies and symptoms include crying, failure to suckle, irritability, sunken eyes, vomiting and diarrhea. It is caused by pulling a baby away too quickly from the breast or bottle, if a baby falls on the floor, or carrying the baby incorrectly.
EmpachoThis affects all age groups and symptoms include anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, bloating and constipation. It is caused by a bolus of undigested or uncooked food that has stuck to the wall of the stomach or intestine.
Susto, or “fright sickness”This affects all age groups and symptoms include extreme lethargy, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and irritability. It is caused by a frightening or traumatic experience. A severe form of the illness is when the spirit leaves the body because of the fright.
Mal PuestoThis can affect all age groups and the most frequent symptoms include sudden attacks of screaming, crying or singing, convulsions and uncontrolled urination. This is an evil illness intentionally put on the individual by a hex.
Mal Ojo, or evil eyeThis affects primarily children, all of whom are susceptible. Symptoms include crying, restlessness, fever, and occasionally vomiting. It is caused by someone with a “strong eye” who looks at or admires a child.

14 Symptoms of Indigestion (Dyspepsia) In Kids And Remedies

Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, refers to problems in digesting food. Indigestion can happen at any age, and it can be occasional or ongoing, depending on the cause. If your child has frequent indigestion, then seek medical care for early diagnosis and treatment of underlying conditions. Read this MomJunction post to know about the symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of indigestion in kids.

What Are The Symptoms Of Indigestion In Kids?

Indigestion itself is not a disease. In some cases, it can be a symptom of an underlying condition. Duration and the associated symptoms may vary depending on the cause.

The following signs and symptoms are common during indigestion (1):

  1. Abdominal pain or discomfort
  2. Bloating
  3. Burping (belching)
  4. Gurgling or churning stomach
  5. Acid reflux
  6. Heartburn that can be felt as a burning sensation or feeling in the chest with a sour or bitter taste in the mouth
  7. Nausea
  8. Vomiting

The intensity, duration, and type of symptoms may vary in each child. Usually, these symptoms may last for several hours after a meal.

Seek emergency care if your child has any of the following severe symptoms of dyspepsia (1):

  1. Swallowing difficulties
  2. Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
  3. Hematemesis (vomiting of blood) or “coffee grounds” vomit
  4. Continuous vomiting
  5. Cold sweats
  6. Melena (black tarry stools) due to bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Indigestion may feel like stomach aches or stomach upset. This may be similar to other difficulties of the upper abdomen. Therefore, it is suggested to seek medical care for frequent indigestion and if your child has any severe symptoms.

Causes Of Indigestion In Children

Indigestion can be caused by the intake of certain foods or due to some conditions. If there is no known cause for indigestion, then it is referred to as functional dyspepsia.

The following foods and factors may cause indigestion in kids (2):

  • Fast eating
  • Overeating or eating a large meal
  • Spicy food
  • Fiber-rich foods
  • High fat or oily foods
  • Eating late at night
  • Caffeinated or carbonated drinks
  • Chocolates
  • Not sleeping well
  • Certain medications such as antibiotics, iron supplements, aspirin, and ibuprofen can cause medication-induced dyspepsia
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Secondhand smoke

Consult a pediatrician if your child’s medications or supplements are causing indigestion. They may give alternatives or other drugs to prevent it.

The following diseases and conditions can also be a cause of severe indigestion in children (3):

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux: Gastroesophageal reflux is a condition where stomach contents regurgitate into the esophagus. This can cause heartburn and other symptoms of indigestion.
  • Gastritis: Stomach inflammation may cause indigestion.
  • Peptic ulcer: Sores or ulcers in the stomach can cause digestive problems.
  • Gastroparesis: This condition affects the motility or movement of the stomach. Motility disorders of the stomach can slow down the movement of food and often result in indigestion.
  • Celiac disease: It is also known as gluten enteropathy or celiac sprue, which is an immune disorder causing gluten sensitivity. Indigestion can be one of its symptoms (4).
  • Intestinal obstruction: Bowel obstruction may cause indigestion.
  • Stomach cancers: This is rare in children, but gastric cancers may be a cause.

Dyspepsia due to diseases can be frequent, and this requires medical care for treatment.

When To Call A Doctor

If your child has severe symptoms of indigestion, then you should seek immediate attention. Frequent indigestion requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. If your child has indigestion after consuming certain foods and medications, then you may mention it during the pediatric visits.

Diagnosis Of Indigestion In Children

After analyzing your child’s symptoms and physical examinations, the doctor may order the following tests for diagnosis (5):

  • Blood tests
  • Urine tests
  • Stool or breath tests
  • Ultrasound
  • X-ray or CT scan
  • Upper endoscopy or esophagogastroscopy is the visualization of the upper gastrointestinal tract using a thin, flexible tube.

Laboratory analysis of blood and urine can be useful to identify infections and metabolic disorders. Confirmation of Helicobacter pylori infection can be obtained from stool or breath tests. Imaging tests help visualize the upper digestive tracts and may help diagnose ulcers, obstruction, and cancers.

How To Treat Indigestion In Children?

Treatment of indigestion can vary depending on the causing factor or disease. If the causes are dietary factors, stress, or lack of sleep, then avoiding them could prevent indigestion.

The following medications are given for indigestion in children (6):

  • Antacids neutralize stomach acid and could help relieve indigestion symptoms. Alka Seltzer and Tums are examples of antacids.
  • Histamine blockers help reduce indigestion symptoms by reducing acid production and are available under brand names, such as Zantac and Pepcid.
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) block stomach acid production. Omeprazole and Lansoprazole are examples of PPIs.
  • Antibiotic therapy is required for H.pylori infection (triple therapy) and other bacterial infections that cause indigestion.
  • Prokinetics, such as metoclopramide and domperidone, help control acid reflux to the esophagus and also facilitate faster emptying of the stomach contents. These are useful in the treatment of functional dyspepsia (7).

Antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs are required for the treatment of anxiety-related indigestion. Anxiety-related indigestion may require referral to a pediatric psychologist for psychotherapy along with medication.

Although many of these drugs are available over-the-counter, it is recommended to get a pediatrician’s prescription for the exact dosage and type of treatment, based on your child’s conditions.

Note: Pain relievers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil (ibuprofen) or Aleve (naproxen) should not be given for indigestion. These may worsen the condition (8).

Home Remedies For Indigestion In Children

Home remedies and lifestyle modifications are useful in preventing mild indigestion. Some such remedies are (9):

  • Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly
  • Avoiding trigger foods, such as spicy or greasy foods, carbonated drinks, chocolates, processed foods, junk foods, etc.
  • Regular physical activity and healthy weight
  • Change in medications that are causing indigestion after discussion with the pediatrician.

Alternative medicines and complementary treatments such as herbal therapy and specific psychotherapies may be useful in some cases. You should discuss the effectiveness and safety of these treatment methods with your child’s doctor before trying them.

Preventing Indigestion In Children

Indigestion due to intake of certain medicines, foods, or drinks can be prevented by avoiding them. Eating several small meals a day and avoiding late-night eating can help reduce indigestion.

You may also encourage your child to have regular physical activity and choose healthy foods for better digestive health (10). Seeking medical care earlier can help prevent the worsening of the underlying cause of indigestion.

Although indigestion may not lead to severe complications, if left untreated, it may interfere with the quality of life. Severe symptoms may cause malabsorption and malnutrition in children. It can become a hindrance to a child’s day-to-day activities, such as attending school.

Signs and Symptoms of Dog Indigestion

One of the hardest experiences for just about any pet owner is when their pup is clearly in distress or discomfort. The problem lies in the fact that it’s obvious that something’s the matter, but your dog can’t communicate exactly what they’re feeling. Instead, you have to be attentive to their actions and changes in behavioral patterns in order to piece together the clues and figure out what’s wrong—that is, in most cases.

When it comes to dog indigestion or gastric issues, the unpleasant symptoms are often all too apparent. And while all canine breeds are susceptible to stomach problems from time to time, there are signs that you should be on the lookout for that indicate a more serious gastric issue.

Below, we’ll cover everything you need to know as a pet owner about indigestion in dogs.

What is Indigestion

Because your dog’s diet is relatively unvaried, it’s easy to forget that they, like humans, are susceptible to gastric distress. Most people incorrectly assume that dogs have a much tougher and robust digestive system. This is understandable, particularly when you remember that the canine is not so far removed from its wolf predecessors. Amongst other factors, domestication and years of selective genetic breeding have gradually sensitized the average dogs’ stomach.

All that said, your normal case of canine indigestion is simply gastric distress that comes from eating the wrong food, too much food, or too much of a certain type of food. Often this causes stomach issues that manifest as symptoms related to:

  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Acid reflux

Why Does Indigestion Occur?

Typically, standard dog indigestion comes down to three key gastric issues:

  • Excessive stomach acid buildup — When the body is working properly, this potent substance is used by both human and canine stomachs to break down food into nutrients and wastes as well as aid the digestive process. However, indigestion occurs when your pup’s stomach begins to produce too much stomach acid.

In such cases, pressure builds up within the gastric system, which causes pain, discomfort, and bloating. In response, a dog’s body naturally attempts to alleviate the problem by releasing the pressure however possible; and the only way that pressure can go is through your pup’s orifices, i.e. the mouth and anus.

  • Inflammation of the stomach – This can cause muscles contractions, which lead to vomiting.
  • Inflammation of the intestine – Similarly, this causes muscle contractions within the intestines which speed the contents of your stomach through the tract, leaving it too little time for the fluids to be properly absorbed back into the intestines. This is what causes diarrhea.

Signs and Symptoms of Dog Indigestion

As you might imagine, stomach issues are a common issue every dog owner runs into. According to Nationwide pet health insurance, diarrhea/intestinal upset and vomiting/upset stomach were cited as the 5th and 6th most common reason for trips to the veterinarian. As the Telegraph notes:

There are many possible causes of vomiting and diarrhea in dogs: entire textbooks have been written on the topic. The most common cause is simple: scavenging. Dogs have evolved to “eat first and ask questions later.” When a dog eats something that really ought to have been left alone (the list of possibilities is too long to itemize), the consequence is commonly that their digestive tract becomes inflamed (red and irritated).

With everyday gastric problems come several noticeable dog indigestion symptoms. These include:

  • Weight loss – When your dog’s stomach hurts, especially if the problem persists, it will have an impact on their diet. At first, your dog may have trouble with the act of eating itself, regularly choking or hacking as it tries to get the food down. If the matter continues, it may stop eating as much or lose interest in food altogether. Over time, this will result in noticeable weight loss.
  • Lip smacking and gulping – Repeated lip smack and gulping are noticeable signs that your dog will likely soon vomit. Per Pet Helpful:

The production of saliva is initiated by the salivary glands and increased saliva can be due to two different scenarios: either too much saliva is being produced or there is a decreased clearance of saliva. In the case of nausea, there is an overproduction of saliva. Because vomit is highly acidic in nature, it can cause potential harm to the dog’s throat, mouth and teeth. An increase in salivation, therefore, helps reduce this damaging effect.

  • Stomach bloat – If you see that your pup’s stomach has been visibly distended, likely by gas buildup, this is a sign that something’s wrong. This may not always be apparent, but you can check by gently feeling your dog’s stomach and local areas. If they react with pain, you know there’s a gastric issue. Also, frequent whimpering is an obvious symptom that they’re in distress.
  • Vomiting/Diarrhea – The most obvious and unpleasant sign that your dog’s stomach is in distress is the body violently attempting to rid itself of the offending substances.
  • Bad Breath – Vomiting, choking back bile, and excess stomach acid will leave your dog’s breath smelling less than pleasant. Although it may not generally smell like roses, the odor is especially pungent and acidic.
  • Change in behavior – If your pup is normally energetic but begins to act differently, especially if their behavior is characterized by lethargy, they’re likely dealing with both discomfort and low energy levels due to weakness caused by improper digestion.
  • Eating grass – A common phenomenon is that when a dog’s stomach is upset, they’ll eat grass as a form of natural emetic or osmotic. In 2014, a study from Proceedings of the National Academy of Science was released about animals that naturally self-medicate. It states: “Anyone who has seen a dog eat grass during a walk has witnessed self-medication. The dog probably has an upset stomach or a parasite. The grass helps them vomit up the problem or eliminate it with the feces.”
  • Passing gas – Flatulence is a normal doggy pastime, and some breeds are far gassier than others. That said, excess flatulence may indicate that your dog’s stomach is trying to relieve itself of pressure.

What Can You Do About A Dog with Indigestion?

If you have a dog with an upset stomach, there are several home remedies you can try for treating canine indigestion. These include:

  • Wait it out – Oftentimes a bout of indigestion may be a singular thing resulting from something bad your dog ate. Sometimes, the best answer is to let nature do its work and see if they can pass the problem on their own. In such cases, avoid feeding your pet for 12 to 24 hours so that you are not compounding the problem.
  • Ice – Although you may be tempted to give your dog a lot of water after they’ve been throwing up or having diarrhea, avoid doing so. Hydration is important, but it’s possible that your dog drinks too much water and only makes matters worse. Instead, give them a bowl of ice chips to chew on once every few hours. If the pup can keep those down, you can move to water.
  • Canned pumpkin – Per Pet MD, canned pumpkin is one of the best holistic remedies for pet indigestion. They write:

It has a low glycemic index, so it slowly absorbs, which helps with upset stomach and digestion. Make sure to get canned pumpkin, and not pumpkin pie mix, as you don’t want to feed your dog spices. Smaller dogs (approximately five pounds) can be fed ½ teaspoon of canned pumpkin, while larger dogs (approximately 75 pounds) can be fed 1 tablespoon.

  • Diet change – If the digestive problems are the result of gastric acid buildup, you may want to change your dog’s diet. A change in diet is usually an effective way to improve digestion in a dog’s body. Withhold food for a day or two, and then feed them small and regular meals of low-fat, low-protein foods, since fats and proteins are often the cause of an increase in gastric acid.
  • Bone broth – One of the best ways to soothe the stomach and hydrate your pup involves feeding them a bone broth soup. This can take up to 24 hours to make, but once you’ve done it, you can freeze it and then break it out whenever stomach issues crop up. For a recipe, check out the one provided by Brindleberry Acres.

Treating Your Dog’s Indigestion

Although all these can be signs of everyday indigestion in dogs, they can also point to more serious medical conditions. If your dog’s digestive problems are worsening or not subsiding, he may be suffering from something more than just regular digestive issues. Digestive upset is normal for dogs and cats, but when your dog’s health begins to decline, that’s when you have to go see a vet for further examination. You may not want to, but it’s worth it to peruse your dog’s excretions to confirm that there’s no blood in the vomit or fecal matter. In such cases, or should the problem persist, it’s crucial that you take your dog to the veterinarian for further testing in order to determine whether or not there are serious underlying health concerns.

Home Remedies for Indigestion in Kids

When you have little kids at home, one of the roles you play is that of nurse/doctor – kids have so many complaints! The most common of these are probably related to tummy woes, caused by an upset stomach. Of these constipation and diarrhea get a lot of attention and advice, but there’s another tummy problem that causes just as much discomfort to kids (and their Moms) – indigestion!

What is indigestion?

Broadly speaking, indigestion refers to an uncomfortable feeling in the abdomen, usually following a meal. The clinical term for indigestion is dyspepsia. Indigestion is in itself not a disease, but rather an effect of the wrong diet or in some cases, a symptom on an underlying condition.

Indigestion may or may not be accompanied by a burning sensation, referred to as heartburn. This is due to stomach acids that make their way upwards. When the muscle that is meant to hold down the acids relaxes, the acids can lead to a burning sensation in the chest area. Anyone can have indigestion, even infants, with nearly 50% of babies under 4 months showing symptoms of heartburn. Most of these resolve themselves by 12 months, although a small percentage of kids continue to have indigestion into their school years.

What causes indigestion in kids?

Indigestion can be caused by a variety of reasons. While some of them are due to serious diseases, most of them are due to common reasons.

  • Immature digestive system (in babies)
  • Too much spicy food, especially if the child is not used to it
  • Insufficient sleep, with regards to quality or quantity
  • Exposure to second hand smoke
  • Stress, particularly in older kids
  • Being overweight
  • Eating and drinking too fast, especially among toddlers who tend to run around while eating
  • Too much intake of carbonated drinks

Symptoms of Indigestion in Kids

Symptoms of indigestion in babies:

  • Arching of the back, particularly during feeding
  • Fussiness, especially during feeding
  • Inability to feed properly
  • Hiccups
  • General congestion
  • Difficulty in breathing

Symptoms of indigestion in toddlers and older kids:

  • Pain in the upper or middle abdomen
  • Burning sensation in the upper abdomen or chest area
  • Feeling too full and unable to eat
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Continuous hiccups and burps
  • Coughing

The symptoms of indigestion in babies can be similar to those of colic, so if you’re confused about which one it is, it may be better to see a pediatrician. If indigestion is left untreated in babies, it can worsen, casuing dehydration and low weight. It can also lead to poor nutrition in older kids.

1. One of the best ways to help a little baby’s indigestion is to burp him correctly. Burping is recommended after every couple of minutes of feeding, to help the milk ‘settle’ and to relieve any excess air. It is normal for newborns to spit up as they burp, and you can let the baby decide if he wants to continue feeding or not.

2. If your baby’s particularly fussy and refusing to settle down, holding her upright for a while will help. Holding babies in an upright position for 30 minutes after feeding is recommended by many experts, and some even suggest letting baby sleep in this position.

3. Another way of correcting heartburn in older kids, is by raising the head of the bed by 6-8 inches. Do this by placing bricks or wooden blocks under the bed legs, rather than adding extra pillows, which will only worsen the condition.

4. In many cases, a glass of milk does the trick, especially for milder indigestion. If your child is above the age of 1, give him a glass of chilled cow’s milk, as long as you’re sure he’s not lactose intolerant.

5. Many parents resort to gripe water for any tummy trouble in their babies, but store-bought gripe water may not be safe for infants. You can make your own, however, with this recipe from Merry Messy Life that uses fennel, ginger and chamomile. Cool, strain and feed to your baby – also works on older kids.

6. Ginger candy is a great way to treat nausea and indigestion, and most kids will readily eat it up! Get the full recipe from Instructables here.

Tips to Prevent Indigestion in Kids

  • Let kids have small, frequent meals instead of big ones
  • Make sure the last meal is at least 2-3 hours before bed
  • Let your child rest or do only mild activity right after a meal
  • Avoid junk food, oily food, carbonated drinks and excessive chocolate
  • Train kids to eat slowly, at a table and not in front of a TV
  • Encourage toddlers to chew their food properly, and to sit down and eat

When should you see a doctor?

As mentioned earlier, indigestion can be due to a variety of reasons, some of which are appendicitis, bowel disease or food allergies like celiac or lactose intolerance. A breastfeeding baby is sensitive to the mother’s diet, so it’s a good idea for the mother to check her diet for any foods that may be causing her baby’s indigestion. It is recommended to see a doctor right away if any of the following symptoms are observed:

  • Vomiting, especially projectile vomiting (throwing up to a distance) in babies
  • Any sign of blood in vomit or stools
  • Poor appetite
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Black stools

Indigestion is a common ailment that most of us face at some point in our life or the other, but kids can have a harder time dealing with it! Try out these home remedies when your child has indigestion, and it’s quite likely that they’ll be happy and smiling in no time!

90,000 Definition of immoderate general meaning and concept. What is this immoderation

The most common use of the term empacho is associated with indigestion caused by food. When a person is weakened, he has symptoms such as headaches and abdominal pain , diarrhea , vomiting and nausea .

Empacho is associated with dyspepsia : a disorder characterized by insufficient and difficult digestion .It should be remembered that digestion is the process of converting food that takes place in the digestive system to assimilate nutrients.

In general, empacho occurs when a person eats in abundance. The body in this frame cannot properly assimilate food, and therefore discomfort arises. In any case, there may be other reasons that lead to embarrassment, such as the consumption of certain certain foods that get sick , eat too fast or even stress .

Empacho treatment is often controversial. An upset stomach usually resolves in one or two days if the person eats a balanced and light diet . The doctor may also give antacid to relieve some of the symptoms. However, it is believed in popular culture that empacho can be cured with magical rituals (since they have no scientific or natural support).

The actions of healers who treat empacho vary from country to country .For example, in Argentina it is customary to “throw querito” (do clamps in the lumbar and sacral region) or to appeal to measurements with the help of tape and prayers.

On the other hand, the idea of embarrassment can also indicate difficulties , embarrassment or fatigue : “The owner of the company did not have the embarrassment to fire twenty people” , “I have a series of embarrassment: I was all weekend watching Netflix .

90,000 SPM SYMPTOMS – Premenstrual Syndrome

Content:

introduction

The famous PMS, also known as premenstrual tension syndrome, is a term that refers to a set of physical and behavioral symptoms that occur cyclically during the second half of the menstrual cycle, that is, between ovulation and subsequent menstruation.

For most women, PMS is only a temporary inconvenience that is easily tolerated and does not cause much discomfort. However, about 1 in 10 women have severe premenstrual syndrome with tension and bouts of anger that can cause social, professional, and personal difficulties.

In this article, we will explain what PMS is, what are the causes, its symptoms, how it is diagnosed, and what are the treatment options for PMS.

What is SPM?

PMS is a collection of signs and symptoms, both physical and psychological, that occur in the final phase of the menstrual cycle, a few days before the onset of menstruation.70 to 80% of women suffer from mood changes during the premenstrual period.

A woman with PMS may have minor mood changes, even severe behavioral symptoms, that have a large impact on quality of life and are detrimental to professional and social life.

The maximum incidence of PMS is between 25 and 35 years. The most severe form of premenstrual syndrome occurs in 8-10% of cases and is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

What Causes PMS?

There is still no explanation as to why premenstrual syndrome occurs. Current research shows that there is an interaction between hormones produced by the ovaries during the second half of the menstrual cycle and certain neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, such as serotonin and endorphin, which are associated with mood control.

It is not known exactly why some women have PMS and others have no symptoms. It has already been proven that there is no difference between estrogen and progesterone levels in women with and without PMS. Therefore, imagine that some women are more sensitive to fluctuations in neurotransmitters in the brain caused by physiological hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle.

They also failed to establish any connection between different personality types with the onset of premenstrual syndrome. Women who are usually calm may have PMS, while agitated and nervous women may not.Likewise, stressors do not appear to play as important a role in the onset of PMS as previously thought. In fact, premenstrual syndrome is much more likely to cause stress than vice versa.

Intervention of feeding with symptoms is also controversial. Excess salt, alcohol, and caffeine can cause changes in neurotransmitter levels, but they have failed to establish a clear link between diet and PMS.

Some studies have shown a link between low vitamin and mineral intake in PMS, but nothing proves that simple substitution of these drugs improves symptoms in all women with PMS.

Thus, there is no scientific basis to support any type of treatment for PMS that is based solely on dietary changes. Some women may still feel some improvement with dietary changes, perhaps because people with healthy foods often have different healthy lifestyle habits that create a sense of well-being.

PMS Symptoms (PMS)

The most common symptoms of PMS in decreasing order of frequency are:

Fatigue – 92% Irritability – 91% Empacho – 90% Anxiety – 89% Breast tenderness – 85% Mood swings – 81% Depression – 80% Cravings for food – 78% Acne – 71% Increased appetite – 70% Hypersensitivity – 69% Edema – 67% Anger and nervousness – 67% Light crying – 65% Feeling of isolation – 65% Headache – 60% Lack of memory, forgetfulness – 56% Gastrointestinal symptoms – 48% Lack of concentration – 47% Heat waves – 18%, palpitations – 14%, dizziness – 14%

Symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric syndrome can be confused with symptoms of certain psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders.

Patients with depression may have worsening symptoms during the premenstrual period and improve after menstruation. However, those who are depressed are never completely symptom free. With premenstrual tension syndrome, symptoms disappear completely after menstruation.

The close temporal relationship between exacerbation of symptoms in the second half of the menstrual cycle and complete resolution after menstruation is the basis for the diagnosis of PMS.

PMS Diagnosis

There is no specific test or test for diagnosing PMS.Diagnosis is made after a careful assessment of the patient’s medical history and physical examination. Blood tests are completely normal in the TPM, but have been shown to rule out other causes for symptoms such as thyroid changes (Read: SYMPTOMS OF THYROID PROBLEMS).

As mentioned, premenstrual dysphoric syndrome is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome. The patient usually has intense symptoms such as bouts of anger and anxiety.A patient with premenstrual dysphoric disorder, unlike simple PMS, has interpersonal problems and often comes into conflict at work, which can be detrimental to professional and personal life. The SDPM is the SPM that effectively disrupts the lives of women.

To help diagnose, the doctor may use questionnaires that the patient fills out, reporting her symptoms during each day of the menstrual cycle.

PMS Treatment

A series of drugs may be useful for controlling PMS.However, many women can only control their symptoms through lifestyle changes.

Practicing regular exercise and a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in salt can help more than you think. Relaxation techniques also help. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe vitamin supplements even if the practice is not scientifically proven.

In symptomatic cases or with a diagnosis of premenstrual dysphoric syndrome, drug treatment is recommended.

Serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants are first-line drugs. The best known of the drugs in this class are sertraline (known by the trade name Dieloft SPM), fluoxetine, paroxetine, and citalopram.

Contraceptive use has various consequences. Some women report significant clinical improvement, but others report worsening. Yaz® is a pill specifically approved for the control of premenstrual syndrome and has an efficacy rate of over 60%, resulting in a contraceptive with better results (read: SECONDARY EFFECTS OF CONTRACT).

In severe cases refractory to conventional treatments, drugs that inhibit the production of estrogen and progesterone in the ovary, called GnRH agonists (leuprolide), can be used. These drugs cause menopause, so with long-term use, the doctor will need to replace estrogen and progesterone.

The vast majority of women gain good PMS control with treatment, however, in more severe cases of premenstrual dysphoric syndrome where all treatments fail, ovarian surgery is an option that should be offered to women who do not want more children.
