What is Excess Skin Removal Surgery?

If you’ve lost a significant amount of weight, you may be left with excess or sagging skin. Excess skin removal surgery, also known as body contouring, can help remove this extra skin and tighten the remaining skin for a more toned, youthful appearance. This type of surgery is often pursued after major weight loss, whether through diet and exercise or bariatric surgery.

When Does Excess Skin Occur?

Excess skin most commonly occurs after substantial weight loss, especially in older individuals. When you carry extra weight for an extended period, your skin loses its elasticity and is unable to tighten back up as the weight is lost. Aging and pregnancy can also contribute to loose, sagging skin.

Can You Remove Excess Skin Without Surgery?

Unfortunately, there is no non-surgical way to completely eliminate excess skin. Techniques like improving skin hydration, using topical treatments, and exercising can help improve skin elasticity to some degree, but surgery is the only long-term solution for removing large amounts of excess skin.

What to Consider with Excess Skin Removal Surgery

Before pursuing excess skin removal surgery, there are a few key factors to consider:

  • Have you reached your goal weight and maintained it for at least 6 months? Further weight changes could undo the results of the procedure.
  • Where do you want the excess skin removed from? Common areas include the abdomen, breasts, thighs, arms, and body overall.
  • Be prepared for a lengthy recovery process, which may involve drainage tubes, pain medication, and limitations on activities like driving and certain physical movements.

Excess Skin Removal Surgery Costs

The cost of excess skin removal surgery can vary significantly depending on the specific procedures performed and your location. On average, patients can expect to pay between $8,000 to $20,000 for a full body lift. Costs for individual procedures like a tummy tuck or arm lift tend to range from $4,000 to $12,000.

What Factors Affect the Cost?

The main factors that influence the cost of excess skin removal surgery include:

  • Number and type of procedures (e.g. tummy tuck, thigh lift, arm lift)
  • Surgeon’s experience and credentials
  • Geographic location (costs tend to be higher in large cities)
  • Anesthesia and facility fees
  • Extent of the surgery and amount of skin being removed

Seeing Results After Excess Skin Removal Surgery

Patients can expect to see significant improvement in the contours and appearance of their bodies after excess skin removal surgery. However, the recovery process can be lengthy, with bruising, swelling, and discomfort lasting for several weeks. It’s important to closely follow your surgeon’s instructions for a safe and successful recovery.

How Long is the Recovery?

The recovery time for excess skin removal surgery varies depending on the specific procedures performed, but it’s generally 1-3 weeks before patients can return to normal activities. During this time, you may need assistance with daily tasks, have limited mobility, and experience pain that requires medication. Patience and diligent wound care are crucial for optimal healing and results.

What Are the Potential Risks?

As with any major surgery, excess skin removal procedures carry some risks, including bleeding, infection, scarring, poor wound healing, and in rare cases, blood clots or other complications. Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you in detail and take steps to minimize them.

Is Excess Skin Removal Surgery Right for You?

If you’re self-conscious about excess skin following significant weight loss, excess skin removal surgery may be worth considering. It’s important to have realistic expectations, be at a stable weight, and work closely with an experienced plastic surgeon. The results can be life-changing, leading to improved confidence and quality of life.

How Do You Choose the Right Surgeon?

When selecting a surgeon for excess skin removal, look for someone who is board-certified in plastic surgery and has extensive experience performing these types of procedures. Review before-and-after photos, read patient reviews, and feel comfortable communicating your goals and concerns with the surgeon.

When Does Excess Skin Occur?

Often, excess skin on the body occurs when you have lost a lot of weight, especially if you’re older. If you carried a lot of weight for several years before having success with weight loss, your skin may not tighten back into place. Loose skin from losing weight can occur in many places on your body: around the abdomen, under the arms, along the thighs, and around your back are some of the most common areas we see excess skin.

Aging is another contributor. Skin has a lot of elasticity, which allows it to go back into place after being stretched, just like a rubber band. However, over time, your skin will lose its elasticity. Just like the rubber band, it will begin to stretch out or sag. We’re most used to seeing the effects of loss of elasticity in the face, jawline and the neck, which all tend to show the impact of aging. Skin in other parts of the body loses elasticity, too, which means it can stretch and sag.

Pregnancy is another known cause of loose skin, particularly around the abdomen and in the breasts. Many women opt for aMommy makeover to tone up areas that have lost their firmness due to pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can You Remove Excess Skin Without Surgery?

Technically, you can’t remove your excess skin without some type of surgery. You may be able to take steps to improve elasticity in your skin, which may help reduce the sagginess that has developed. Increasing hydration and working with a medical expert on topical skin treatments are a good starting point for improving your skin’s health and elasticity.

Even with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and other tips to help improve the quality of your skin, you will likely continue to have excess skin without surgery. For more dramatic and longer-lasting results that improve the appearance of excess skin, looking into surgical procedures will be necessary. It is the only long-term solution to get rid of areas of loose skin.

What to Consider with Excess Skin Removal Surgery

If you want to get rid of loose skin and are interested in extra skin removal surgery, you should consider several aspects of this procedure. First, you’ll want to determine if you have completed your weight loss journey. You want to maintain your goal weight for a minimum of six months before choosing surgery. Gaining weight and losing it again will undo the effects of the procedure. Treatment for excess skin should happen after weight loss surgery if you had help dropping those unwanted pounds. The two procedures cannot be performed together.

Know where you want to have excess skin removed. Extra skin removal surgery isn’t just one procedure but potentially multiple surgeries, depending on where you want the extra skin removed from.

Some common surgeries that fall under this broad heading include:

  • Tummy tuck, which removes excess skin around the abdomen and tightens weak muscles
  • Panniculectomy, which removes the excess skin under your belly button
  • Breast lift, which tightens the tissue in your breasts to keep them from sagging
  • Thigh lift, which helps create more definition along your thighs
  • Lower body lift, which removes the excess skin from the abdomen, thighs and hips
  • Arm lift, which removes the loose skin that hangs down from your arms
  • Facelift, which tightens skin around your jaw and neckline

Your doctor may recommend a combination of these surgical procedures as part of your surgery to remove excess skin.

Recovery with Excess Skin Removal

The recovery process can be lengthy, depending on which surgeries you have done. You may need temporary tubes put into place to allow for drainage. Pain relievers will assist with the pain, but you can expect some discomfort for a few weeks as your body heals.

You will need to have bandages changed out regularly, and you may need assistance for some of them. Driving will be prohibited during the first few days after surgery. Plan to take some time off from work, which can vary from one to three weeks.

One of the challenges with this type of surgery is that you may find certain everyday activities are difficult in the beginning of your recovery. You may not be able to sit or stand normally for a few days. Sleeping may be difficult, requiring pillows to increase comfort.

Seeing Results After Surgery to Remove Excess Skin

You will experience bruising, swelling, and redness after the surgery. It takes time for the body to heal and for you to see the results. You can expect to notice some difference as soon as the swelling subsides, but it can take up to a year or longer for full results to be achieved.

The results are long-term as long as you maintain your weight. If you regain weight and lose it, your skin will stretch out again.

Excess Skin Removal Surgery Cost

The cost for excess skin removal will vary widely, depending on which areas you are treating. When you meet with Dr. Lapuerta, he will discuss your goals with you and determine a treatment plan. At that time, he can provide details about cost based on which surgical procedures you need. However, you can expect from around $4,000 for a single procedure to more than $20,000 for multiple procedures.

Abdominoplasty

at Medeor Medical Center

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a “tummy tuck”, is a procedure that minimizes the abdominal area. During the procedure, the surgeon removes excess fat and skin. A less complicated procedure is a partial tummy tuck or “mini tummy tuck”. Partial abdominoplasty is ideal for patients whose fat deposits are limited to the area below the navel.

Who is eligible for abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is suitable for women and men who:

  • are in good physical condition
  • Worried about large fat deposits and flabbiness of the skin of the abdomen
  • Unable to correct body imperfections through diet or exercise
  • Strive for a perfect reflection in the mirror and self-love
  • Faced the consequences of childbirth and changes in the condition and quality of the body
  • Want to keep a beautiful and attractive body to please their partner

You should not have surgery if you:

  • Are planning to lose weight
  • Planning a pregnancy in the near future

How is the Abdominoplasty procedure performed?

Although each patient’s experience is different, surgery usually follows this process.
The operation can last several hours and depending on the amount of work.

  1. We will consult with you and diagnose your body.
  2. We will decide with you when to perform the operation and give you time to prepare for it.
  3. Make a long incision from one side of the thigh to the other.
  4. Remove excess fat and skin from the middle and lower abdomen.
  5. Tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.
  6. The procedure takes several hours. After the procedure, short-term side effects may occur

Tummy tuck recovery

After surgery, you can expect:

  • Side effects You may experience some short-term side effects, including a swollen or painful abdomen.
  • Healing, a slow and gradual process. It may take several weeks or months for complete recovery.
  • Scars, scars may worsen at first, especially during the first three to six months. It can take up to a year for the scars to fade and lighten, although they may not completely disappear.

Possible complications from the procedure include:

  • Scarring if the incision area does not heal properly. We can often fix this with a second operation.
  • Surgical Complications As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection, blood clots, or reactions to anesthesia.
