Figs constipation: Diet Dos and Don’ts for Constipation Relief

Diet Dos and Don’ts for Constipation Relief

Constipation Relief, Constipation Prevention

One of the healthiest steps you can take is choosing foods that relieve constipation or prevent constipation in the first place. You may already turn to foods that relieve constipation, such as bran cereal or prune juice. However, if you don’t yet have constipation symptoms, you don’t need to wait until they start to begin eating healthier.

You can get constipation relief or work to prevent constipation now with the right constipation diet. Follow these diet dos and don’ts.

Do …

  • Drink plenty of fluids. Getting the recommended eight glasses of water a day helps to soften your stool, making elimination easier. Drinking the right amount of fluids may also help stool leave the colon, Fortunato says.
  • Eat fresh and dried fruit. Fruit, especially dried fruit, is loaded with fiber and is one of the foods that help relieve constipation. Along with water, fiber helps give stool the right consistency to pass easily. Good fruit choices for a constipation diet are raisins, prunes, figs, bananas, apples, and applesauce.
  • Load your plate with vegetables. Vegetables are also high in fiber and can help prevent constipation. Pinto beans, legumes, salads, and raw vegetables are all high in fiber, making them great choices for constipation relief and prevention.
  • Fill up on whole grains for fiber. Look for whole-grain bread, oatmeal, ground flax seed, barley, and wheat bran cereal. Your goal should be to get up to 35 grams of fiber a day, and just one ounce of wheat bran cereal gives you 10 grams.

Don’t …

  • Rely on processed foods. Processed foods don’t have much fiber, Fortunato says. Eating too many of them can lead to constipation — better to go with natural foods like fruits and vegetables than to get your meals and snacks from a box or bag.
  • Drink coffee or caffeinated drinks all day. Caffeine is a stimulant so it can cause you to have a bowel movement. But it can also cause dehydration, which can have the opposite effect and lead to constipation, Fortunato explains.
  • Go overboard on dairy. Dairy on its own may not lead to constipation, but the lactose in dairy can produce gas and make you uncomfortable if you’re backed up already, Fortunato says. Also, foods that are loaded with cheese aren’t usually part of a balanced diet, so be sure to get the three recommended daily servings of dairy from healthy, low-fat sources, such as nonfat milk and yogurt.
  • Drink too much alcohol. Like caffeine, alcohol can dehydrate you and cause constipation. Limiting your alcohol intake can help relieve constipation.

If constipation is a problem, it’s better to see a doctor sooner rather than later, Fortunato says. In his clinic, he recommends that patients who are constipated work with a dietitian to change their eating habits and avoid future problems. A constipation diet full of fiber and plenty of fluids may be all you need to stay regular.

Benefits, side effects, and nutrition

A fig is a soft fruit with a thin skin that can be either green or purple. The flesh of a fig is typically red, and the entirety of the fruit is edible.

People have used figs to help treat health conditions related to the endocrine, reproductive, and respiratory systems, as well as the digestive tract.

This article explores the benefits and risks associated with fig consumption. It also discusses the nutritional content of both fresh and dried figs.

Practitioners of Indian systems of medicine have long used figs to treat conditions affecting the following bodily systems:

Some researchers believe that figs have the following properties:

  • antioxidant
  • anticancer
  • anti-inflammatory
  • fat-lowering
  • cell-protective

These properties may be responsible for the therapeutic effects of figs. The sections below discuss these potential benefits in more detail:

Diabetes and glucose control

The World Health Organization (WHO) have suggested that people can use traditional plants to help treat diabetes. Researchers have noted the fig’s liver-protecting and glucose-lowering effects.

Research on this subject is very limited. However, one small study from 1998 found that in eight participants, there was a decrease in after-meal glucose levels when they took fig leaf extracts.

The study participants also needed lower doses of insulin when they supplemented with fig leaf extract.

In a study that used rats with type 2 diabetes, the researchers found that fig leaf extract could improve insulin levels and lower blood glucose levels.

In a different study using mice with diabetes, the researchers revealed that fig leaf extract could stop or slow down the production of glucose in the liver.

Erectile dysfunction

Some people consider certain plants to be aphrodisiacs due to their potential ability to stimulate sexual arousal. Indeed, some people use figs for their alleged aphrodisiac properties.

A study in rats tested the aphrodisiac abilities of three plants: earth smoke, Chinese cinnamon, and figs.

The researchers measured the effectiveness of a mixture of these plants by studying the increase in mounting behavior. The rats that received this mixture had increased sexual activity, compared with the control group.

However, it is difficult to determine which of the three plants was responsible for the increased sexual activity.

Researchers have not yet examined the aphrodisiac effects of figs in humans. Further studies are necessary before doctors can recommend using figs for erectile dysfunction.

Skin health

An older study in the International Journal of Dermatology compared the effects of fig tree latex with those of cryotherapy on common warts.

In the study, 25 participants with common warts on both sides of their body applied fig tree latex on one side. On the other side, doctors used cryotherapy.

The researchers found that in 44% of the participants, the fig tree latex completely resolved the warts. Cryotherapy was more effective, however, resulting in a complete reversal in 56% of the participants.

Researchers do not yet understand why figs can help resolve warts, but fig tree latex could offer a safe and easy-to-use treatment option that presents little or no side effects.

Hair health

Very few studies have looked at the connection between figs and hair health. However, figs are very high in iron, which is an important mineral for helping maintain healthy hair.

Before a person starts taking extracts or supplements for hair health, they should speak with their doctor to ensure that it is safe for them.

More research is necessary to test the effect of figs on fever. However, a study in rats showed that a dose of a fig alcohol extract reduced body temperature for up to 5 hours.

Further studies are needed to confirm these findings, however, as researchers are still unsure how to explain the body temperature-lowering effect of figs.

Digestive health

Due to the fruit’s laxative properties, people commonly use fig syrup to help treat constipation. However, only a few studies have ever provided evidence of figs helping with constipation.

In one study, the researchers gave rats loperamide (Imodium) to cause constipation. The rats that received fig paste had fewer episodes of constipation than the control group.

Another study compared the effects of figs and fiber supplements in people with functional constipation. Figs improved the majority of constipation symptoms, including:

  • bowel movement time
  • number of bowel movements
  • stomach pain and discomfort

Figs also decreased the effort necessary to pass a stool and improved the sense of incomplete evacuation.

The researchers did not note any differences in constipation relief between fiber supplements and figs.

The risks associated with figs may vary depending on how people use them. The sections below cover this in more detail.

Medication interactions

Both fresh and dried figs contain a high level of vitamin K. People taking blood-thinning medications such as warfarin need to keep the vitamin K levels in their diet consistent, so they may wish to avoid figs.

Digestive symptoms

Since figs have a high fiber content, eating too many figs — especially dried figs — can cause diarrhea.

Some people may be allergic to figs.

Researchers in Vienna found that a high percentage of people allergic to birch pollen had positive skin allergy tests to fresh figs.

Specifically, although 78% of the participants with birch pollen allergy had a positive skin test to fresh figs, most tolerated dried figs.

Choosing dried or fresh figs depends on a person’s tastes, preferences, and circumstances.

Dried figs contain more calories, sugar, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals than fresh figs. Fresh figs will have more vitamin C, vitamin A, and beta-carotene.

A person should always rinse fresh figs. After that, they are edible as they are.

People can also eat dried figs as they are, or they can reconstitute them by soaking them in warm water until they soften.

People can use fresh and dried figs in a variety of dishes. Here are a few recipes to try:

The following table, which is adapted from the United States Department of Agriculture, shows the nutritional content of 100 grams (g) of raw and dried figs in kilocalories (kcal), g, milligrams (mg), and micrograms (mcg):

Raw figs Dried figs

A fig is a nutritious fruit that provides a lot of calcium and fiber. People can choose to eat fresh or dried figs, but they should be mindful that dried figs contain more calories and sugar.

People can use figs to help treat a variety of conditions, as they are unlikely to cause harm. However, there is not currently enough research to back up many of the claims associated with the alleged health benefits of figs.

How Figs Help in Preventing Constipation – Vaya News

We like to think of figs, otherwise known as anjeer, as a holiday fruit. Although they hail from Asia and Africa, it is pretty common to see them gracing the Christmas table. They’re also eaten as great snacks, and after dinner desserts. Well it turns out their popularity may not just be due to their taste. Figs are actually really great at eliminating constipation, which is exactly what you want to have after a heavy meal.

Constipation is a condition that occurs when a person has difficulties clearing their bowels. It is a pretty common affliction, especially for people who like to eat certain constipation inducing dishes, like spicy foods (looking at Southern India – about 22 percent of Indians suffer from regular constipation). For most people, constipation is a minor inconvenience and just the price you have to pay for an over laden meal. But constant or chronic constipation can lead to some pretty serious health consequences. It can result in itching of the bowels, pain, bleeding, and in the worst cases, anal fissures (that sounds painful right?).

Thankfully, you can treat constipation pretty easily if you have the right tools. That is where figs come to play. This wonderful fruit is packed with dietary fiber which helps to induce bowel movements. Figs are so potent with dietary fiber that just simply eating figs after a meal can help induce a bowel movement and provide some much needed relief. But you can also make figs into a home remedy to concentrate their power.

What Are Figs and Are They Good for the Bowels? | Healthy Eating

By Sharon Perkins Updated December 02, 2018

Figs are small, wrinkled-looking fruits that belong to the mulberry family. Turkey produces more figs than any other country. Although you can eat figs fresh off the vine, some people prefer dried figs. Figs, like all fruits, contain fiber that can have health benefits for your gastrointestinal tract. However, adding too much fiber too fast may affect your digestive health too, so you should add them to your diet gradually.

Fiber in Figs

A serving of figs — which equals three to five dried or fresh figs — supplies 4 grams of insoluble and 2 grams of soluble fiber, the California Figs Advisory Board reports. Americans need at least 20 grams of fiber per day but actually consume just 15 grams. Men and teens need 30 to 35 grams per day or more, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Add other fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet as well to meet your daily fiber needs.

Effects of Soluble and Insoluble Fibers

Figs, like most fruits and vegetables, contain a mixture of soluble and insoluble fiber, which have different effects on your bowels. Soluble fiber binds with fatty acid, forming a gel and slowing the emptying time in the stomach. When food digests more slowly, you feel full longer, a benefit if you’re trying to eat less or lose weight. Insoluble fiber forms a bulky stool that moves more quickly through the gastrointestinal tract. Insoluble fiber passes essentially unchanged through the stool.

More Benefits from Fiber

Both types of fiber have beneficial effects on the bowel. Insoluble fiber helps prevent constipation because the bulky, soft stool it forms passes more easily through the intestines. If you have diarrhea, fiber can absorb fluid from the gastrointestinal tract, making stools firmer. Including figs and other forms of fiber in your diet can also reduce your risk of developing hemorrhoids from constipation. A diet high in fiber might also reduce the risk of developing diverticular diseases. Diverticolosis is the formation of small pouches in the colon; food can become trapped in the pouches, causing inflammation in the diverticuli called diverticulitis. Fiber might also help prevent colon cancer, although this has not been conclusively proven, MayoClinic.com cautions.

Fiber’s Risks

Adding a large amount of fiber to your diet, especially if you’re not used to it, can cause rather than prevent bowel problems. If you go on a fig-eating binge, especially if you eat dried fruits, you could develop gas, bloating and abdominal discomfort. Gradually increase your fiber intake over a few weeks; add a few figs as an afternoon treat or eat them as a dessert.

Constipation – The Polyclinic

Constipation (lack of stool or passing of small, hard stool) may result from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, inactivity, medication (especially pain medication), the disease itself or changes in your diet.

  1. Eat a diet of fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, dried fruits, such as raisins, prunes, apricots and nuts. If you have trouble chewing and swallowing these, try grating them or putting them in a blender.
  2. Try high-fiber snack foods such as sesame bread sticks, date-nut or prune bread, oatmeal cookies, fig newtons, date or raisin bars, granola and corn chips. Try natural “laxative-type” foods – bran, whole grain cereals, prune juice.
  3. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of bran daily to cooked cereals, casseroles, eggs, baked goods or eat it as a raw cereal.
  4. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of fluid a day. Prune juice is a good “natural stimulant.” Drink plenty of fluids, including milk. This will help to prevent your stool from getting hard.

  1. Light, daily exercise is recommended to help maintain and stimulate regular bowel activity.
  2. Try hot tea, coffee or lemon water early in the morning or 30 minutes to 1 hour before regular time for a bowel movement.
  3. To promote regularity, have a time set each day when you can sit on the commode uninterrupted and quietly.
  4. Gently massage your abdomen from right to left while you’re sitting on the commode.

  1. Report abnormal (an inability to pass stools, blood, diarrhea or green mucous) stools to your doctor or nurse.
  2. If you are undergoing treatment, check first with your doctor or nurse before taking a laxative and/or stool softener.
  3. Avoid frequent use of enemas. They can be harmful to the colon if used too often. Check with your doctor first.
  4. Check with your doctor or nurse if you need additional help.

Figs relieve functional constipation

Posted on Wed, 23 Nov 16

Although there is a long traditional use of figs in treating constipation there have been no clinical studies until now. And figs may rival over the counter laxatives in efficacy and safety.

Constipation affects 1 in 5 people making it an extremely common problem. Over the counter laxatives are a popular therapy but they do not always work and may result in dependence.

A research group have revived an ancient remedy, figs (the fruit of Ficus carica). In recent experimental animal studies, they found that figs could increase mucin production, improve peristaltic movement, and ultimately lead to shortened colonic transit time and increased fecal quantity. Based on these promising findings they tested figs in people.

In a human clinical study, they compared the effects of fig paste (equivalent to 3 figs) to a placebo (a paste flavoured, and coloured to look identical) over 8 weeks in people with functional constipation [1].

The fig treatment was associated with a significant reduction in colon transit time (bowel movements increased from 2.1 to 3.7 per week) and a significant improvement in stool type (Bristol stool scale improved from 1.9 to 3) and abdominal discomfort (reduced from a score of 3.8 to 2.6) compared with the placebo.

“From a mechanistic point of view, the beneficial effects of F. carica  paste on constipation are most likely related to its composition,” commented the authors. “ F. carica  contains high amounts of cellulose, phenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, which are reported to have laxative effects. These bioactive substances may stimulate chloride channel or serotonergic signaling, which in turn stimulate colonic secretion of water, electrolytes, and mucin.’

Figs for constipation – Women’s health

What dietary rules should you follow in case of intestinal problems?

Advised by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy of the Faculty of Advanced Training and Postgraduate Retraining of Specialists of the Rostov State Medical University, Professor Aleksey Aleksandrovich Yakovlev.

– Why do women especially often complain of constipation in winter and spring?
– The main reasons are a decrease in the amount of fruits and vegetables in the diet, as well as a sedentary lifestyle. Fruits and vegetables contain ballast substances, the main of which is dietary fiber. They are proven to be very important for health. Passing unchanged through the intestines, they absorb a large amount of water and swell. Due to this, the volume of intestinal contents increases, which, in turn, leads to the normalization of the stool.
In addition, dietary fiber is an excellent sorbent. They are able to actively absorb various harmful compounds.
– What foods are most helpful for constipation?
– First of all, natural products should be used as a source of dietary fiber. So, vegetables are rich in vegetable fiber: carrots, radishes, tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, eggplants, pumpkin. Various greens are also very valuable: dill, parsley, sorrel, nettle, celery. In winter, sauerkraut, pickles, and seaweed are also useful.
Try to include fruits, berries and dishes from them in your daily diet. Dried fruits are excellent sources of dietary fiber. Most of them are in dried figs, slightly less in dried apricots and prunes.
Crumbly cereals, such as buckwheat, are recommended as a side dish. Vegetable oils such as olive and sunflower are very useful: they soften the contents of the intestines.
Cereals contain a lot of vegetable fiber. Therefore, choose whole wheat and rye breads.Eat bread, preferably a little bit stale. Recently, special “medicinal” varieties of bread made from crushed wheat grains and loaves made from whole wheat grains have appeared.
– How do juices work on the intestines? What drinks should you choose?
– Any freshly prepared vegetable and fruit juices stimulate the intestines. It is advisable to drink them daily 30-60 minutes before meals. Freshly squeezed juices and drinks containing fruit pulp are especially effective for intestinal problems. These include plum, apricot, peach, tomato, carrot, beetroot and celery juices.
It is recommended to store freshly prepared juice in the refrigerator for no more than 1 hour. It is advisable to keep only beet juice before use in the refrigerator in an open container for 2-3 hours. In case of poor tolerance of beet juice, it can be mixed with carrot juice in a ratio of 1: 3.
In general, constipation requires a lot of liquid. If there are no special contraindications, for example, heart disease or kidney disease, then drink at least 1.5-2 liters per day.
Table mineral waters have a healing effect on constipation. They are used if there are no contraindications: gallstone disease, exacerbation of chronic inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
In case of constipation, which is associated with a decrease in the motor function of the intestines and the lethargy of the intestinal wall, medicinal sulphate magnesium-sodium waters are needed. Narzan, Essentuki No. 4 or 17, Mirgorod water should be taken cool 3-4 times a day, 1.5 hours before meals.
For constipation accompanied by pain, we recommend waters with a small amount of gas of low or medium mineralization: Borzhomi, Slavianovskaya, Smirnovskaya. They are drunk warm 30-60 minutes before meals, slowly, in small sips.
– What foods are undesirable for constipation?
– There are no unambiguously “harmful” foods that cause intestinal problems. The inclusion of foods containing dietary fiber in the normal diet is often sufficient.
However, it is believed that foods containing tannin can delay bowel movements: dried blueberries, strong black tea, cocoa, natural red wines. Do not get carried away with a lot of pasta, semolina and rice porridge.
– Will there be bloating and flatulence if there is a lot of plant foods?
– This problem really exists. Increasing the amount of plant foods is not always well tolerated. Replacing the usual food with a new one should be slow and gradual.
If you are faced with such a problem, eliminate foods that cause flatulence from your diet. First of all, these are cabbage, legumes, grapes, fresh bread.

How to use figs for constipation: 3 ways

Constipation is a disorder in the work of the intestines, which is a common condition for many today. It happens due to improper diet, lack of physical activity and adverse environmental factors. In such conditions, pathology is increasingly becoming not one-time, but chronic, recurring over and over again. In addition, it is not uncommon for a person to live for a long time with a mild form of constipation, in which there is insufficient excretion of feces, and not a complete absence of defecation, and does not even suspect that he needs treatment. As a result of this, disturbances in the work of the digestive system are aggravated, and gradually constipation becomes more and more severe, and its elimination turns out to be quite problematic, due to the fact that the large intestine is very stretched and its muscles cannot contract to the extent that it should.Constipation should not be left unattended, since this pathology not only causes pain and discomfort, but also carries a serious danger to the patient’s life, causing intestinal necrosis in severe cases. Such a complication occurs in the complete absence of defecation for 2 or more weeks and occurs due to the rotting of feces in the body with the release of a large amount of dangerous toxic substances. Under their influence, the tissues of the mucous membrane die off first, and then the deeper tissues of the intestine.

In order to protect yourself from the dangerous consequences of constipation, you should make every effort to normalize bowel function for a maximum of 5 days after the onset of the problem. If this does not succeed, it is necessary to seek medical help, since the continuation of constipation indicates that the problem has gone far and cannot be dealt with without the help of a physician.

Today, on the shelves of the pharmacy, one can easily find laxatives of various speed of action and price category, however, despite this, home methods of eliminating a delicate problem do not lose their popularity. This is due to the fact that the compositions used in traditional medicine do not appeal to addiction, and, therefore, it is impossible to plant your intestines on them. One of these drugs, to which there will be no addiction, is figs, which eliminates constipation in an extremely short time.

How figs work for constipation

In order to understand what is the use of figs in the fight against constipation, it should be remembered that with this pathology, the maximum dehydration of feces occurs, due to which they harden and form a plug in the intestine, which is impossible to get rid of without laxative drugs. In the composition of figs, pectins and fiber are present in large quantities, which are responsible for the normal discharge of feces. These two constituents of figs help to ensure that a sufficient amount of fluid flows into the large intestine (thereby softening digestive waste), as well as improve intestinal motility. As a result, the feces, which have become plastic again, are easily pushed to the anus and excreted from the body.

Contraindications for taking figs

Despite the fact that figs are an excellent medicine for constipation, not everyone can use it. It is necessary to refuse such a medicine in the following cases:

  • diabetes mellitus;

  • gastritis;
  • colitis;
  • 90,088 gout;

    90,088 children up to 2 years old;

  • allergic reaction to figs.

If contraindications are not observed, you can cause significant harm to your health, and therefore, if there are restrictions on the intake of these dried fruits, you should choose another drug.

Figs are a wonderful and useful product. Many have tried it fresh or dried, but hardly thought about how useful it is.

Fig, aka fig or fig, grows on trees of the genus ficus from the mulberry family. Latin name: Ficus carica.

The fig tree is deciduous and can reach a height of 7‒10 meters. Trees grow in dry, sunny areas with fresh and deep soils. They also settle in rocky areas and can survive in less fertile soils. Fig trees live up to 100 years and have long, winding branches that sometimes exceed the height of the tree itself. The homeland of figs is the Middle East and Western Asia. Fig trees are now cultivated all over the world, including Asia and North America.

Figs grow to a size of 3-5 centimeters, with an impressive weight of up to 50-70 grams. As they mature, green figs turn either purple or brown. Figs have a unique taste. The sweet soft texture and crunchy seeds create an unusual and interesting combination. The taste of the fruit also depends on its color. In nature, there are a large number of varieties of figs: oval or pear-shaped, white, green, red, yellow, purple and even black.Fresh figs are available from June to September, and dried figs are available all year round.

Let’s take a step back in time and find out a little more about the origins of this amazing tree.

The word “fig” comes from the Latin ficus and the Hebrew feg. Fig trees are known to be the first to be grown and cultivated. They are mentioned in the Bible as a symbol of peace and prosperity, and Adam and Eve used fig leaves as clothing. The Assyrians used figs as a sweetener as early as 3000 BC.BC e. In ancient Greece, it was eaten by the participants of the Olympics, and it was presented to the winners as a reward. Aristotle in his works described the cultivation of figs in Greece. Thanks to the Greeks and Romans, fig trees spread throughout the Mediterranean region. Later, at the beginning of the 16th century, figs were brought to America and by the middle of the century – to China. Large fig gardens were planted in California by Spanish missionaries in the late 19th century.

Figs are a wonderful and useful product. Many have tried it fresh or dried, but hardly thought about how useful it is.

Which figs are healthier – dried or fresh

Without a doubt, fresh fruits are good for health, but how good are dried fruits? If we talk about figs, then the difference is minimal. Unlike many dried fruits, dried figs have fewer calories than fresh ones! About 20 kcal – in one dried fig, and in fresh – already 30 kcal. However, fresh figs contain more water and because they take up more volume in the stomach, they satisfy hunger better. One dried fig contains 5 g of carbohydrates and 4 g of sugar, and fresh – 8 g and 7 g, respectively. The fiber content does not change after drying and is 1 g.

Health benefits and harms of dried figs

Therefore, it is ideal for protecting the body from hypertension and has a calming effect on the nervous system. Also, in the presence of a large amount of salt in the diet, potassium prevents increased calcium loss in the urine.

Excellent source of calcium

Calcium is one of the most important elements for the human body.It is essential for the formation and strengthening of bones, reduces the risk of osteoporosis, plays a major role in nerve function and is responsible for muscle contraction. Many plant foods contain calcium, but dried figs are an outstanding source of this micronutrient! Just five dried figs contain approximately 135 mg of calcium, which is about 12% of the daily requirement of an adult. For comparison, 100 ml of milk contains 125 mg of calcium.

Also in the composition of figs there is a large amount of phosphorus, which stimulates the formation of bones and is involved in their restoration in case of degradation or damage.

Soluble fiber (pectin), which figs are rich in, stimulate intestinal motility. When moving along the digestive tract, these fibers work like a magnet and collect excess cholesterol, and then leave the body through the excretory system. This “cleaning” has a positive effect on the digestive system, reduces the likelihood of constipation, hemorrhoids, and normalizes the digestive tract.Figs contain a large amount of seeds rich in mucin, which helps to remove waste, mucus and cleanse the colon.
