Causes of yeast infection
The extra growth of yeast in the vagina occurs due to an imbalance in the vaginal chemistry, leading to an infection. A few factors that can cause this imbalance are:

It is recommended to eat a small cup of unsweetened yoghurt every day to give your body a boost of extra-good bacteria. But before you start popping pills and blindly following home remedies to prevent yeast infection, know that your diet can make a big difference. Says Dr Namita Nadar, Head Nutritionist at the Fortis Hospital Noida: “Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and non-fat dairy products can help you prevent a yeast infection.”

1. Dairy products
“Eating foods with lactobacillus acidophilus organisms, such as yoghurt or acidophilus milk, can help you in preventing yeast infections,” says Dr Nadar.
Moreover, a study published in the journal Mycopathologia found that in women with yeast infection who received an oral and vaginal probiotic, similar to what’s in cheese, incidents of reinfection reduced to just 31%!

2. Virgin coconut oil
Unlike your regular coconut oil, virgin coconut oil is fresh, pure, and free of any chemical refining. And this oil can do wonders for your health, since it preserves all the minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. A study, done by the researchers at Tufts University found that coconut oil can be extremely effective at fighting Candida albicans—a pathogenic yeast that causes the infection.
Dr Nadar suggests: “Coconut oil is a good food to decrease yeast infection. And it can be used orally and topically.”
Yes, you read that right! The pungent-smelling food can help you prevent a yeast infection. “Garlic is very useful to suppress yeast infections,” she says.
The starring ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. This plant compound can be ingested or applied locally to control and avoid a yeast infection, says Dr Nadar.

Your regular weight loss tonic and elixir for hair, apple cider vinegar can also help you deal with a yeast infection. Dr Nadar says, “The acidic component of apple cider vinegar can help decrease the infection. Add it to lukewarm water and drink it up. You can also add it to bathwater to get rid of the infection.”

Foods To Eat To Fight Yeast Infection
A particular fungi called candida resides in human beings, around the mouth, ears, nose, skin, fingernails, belly, bowels and vagina that can cause yeast infections. When present in normal amounts, the fungi helps in digestion and absorbing nutrients.
But when the body is under stress, immunity is compromised. It then multiplies in huge numbers and infect parts of the body. This problematic yeast infection originated from a strain of the fungus called candida albicans.
The telling signs could be throat soreness, mouth redness and cracks in the corners, discomfort during sex, vagina becoming itchy, heartburn and arthritis. There could be more symptoms, too. Having diabetes, being treated for cancer, consuming wide-spectrum antibiotics and wearing dentures are factors making men and women of all ages susceptible.
Scientists are divided on the subject of ‘candida hypersensitivity’, as to whether the condition really exists at all. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, by reviewing evidence put forward by the proponents of the condition, said the concept is merely speculative and laregely unproven.
This is probably because most of the time, the infection is not considered serious and can be treated with antifungal prescription medication. Also, more effectively, by making lifestyle changes starting with the diet. And here are some of the foods recommended by experts to stop the fungi from proliferating.
A Low-Sugar Diet – Restricting sugar is crucial to containing the growth of candida fungi. Sugar helps in the construction of cell walls and amplifies their expansion into small colonies, ultimately turning poisonous.
A study done on mice with poor immunity, showed that sugar escalated the growth of candida yeast in their digestive systems. On the contrary, a few studies with human beings do not prove that candida bacteria grows faster with a high-sugar diet. Though the research remains mixed, there are benefits to restricting sugar on overall health.
Turmeric – A spice often sprinkled on Indian food, turmeric, has a powerful antifungal property called curcumin that is known to inhibit the growth of candida yeasts and even kill them.
A study found that curcumin may prevent candidiasis from forming in the mouth of HIV positive patients. Surprisingly, it showed more promise than the antifungal drug, fluconazole. So far, only test-tube studies have proven the positive effect of curcumin, hence more studies with human beings are needed.
Coconut Oil – Plants have natural toxic compounds that kill fungus. One such compound is lauric acid, a fatty acid known for its antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Half or 50 percent of coconut oil is composed of lauric acid, making the oil one of the best sources to fight the candida yeast naturally. Coconut oil, for this reason, is used to kill bacteria in the mouth in dental cleaning processes called oil pulling.
Apple Cider Vinegar – A popular variety of vinegar called apple cider vinegar, which is a huge hit with health conscious people, has enough acid and enzymes to stop the growth of harmful and unwanted yeast in the body.
Probiotics – Food with live bacteria called probiotics are needed for the body to block the growth of harmful bacteria. It is found in foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, miso, pickles and kimchi.
These bacteria are needed to fight the fungi causing candidiasis, hence probiotics are needed to help these useful bacteria grow back. Also, polyphenols present in chia seeds and flaxseeds help probiotics grow inside the gut, eventually fighting the formation of harmful fungi.
Garlic – Raw garlic is said to have strong and potent antifungal properties due to the presence of allicin that is formed by crushing or damaging fresh garlic. When mice were fed allicin, it did prove to help fight off candidiasis, although not at the same level as fluconazole, a popular antifungal medication.

Wear the right clothing
Since yeast infections thrive in warm, moist environments, wearing dry clothes that give your genital area enough room to “breathe” are the best choices.
- Don’t stay in wet clothes – Change your clothes as soon as possible after working out or swimming.
- Choose the right fabrics – Natural fibers like cotton and silk can help keep you dry, but synthetic fabrics including nylon can hold moisture in.
- Avoid certain garments – Limit your time wearing pantyhose, tights, leggings or yoga pants, which hold in warmth and moisture.
- Stay loose at night – Wear a nightgown and skip wearing underwear when you sleep.
Change your diet
A yeast infection is caused by Candida yeast. Sugar in your diet can help promote its growth. Try eliminating foods that are high in sugar and carbs and substituting ones that have more vitamins and healthy fats. Add more foods with probiotics (healthful bacteria) to your diet.
Try eating more of the following:
- Papaya – Extracts from its seeds and leaves can help prevent yeast infections, and you’ll also be getting a hefty dose of vitamin C.
- Coriander – Whether you’re adding seeds to a seasoning mix or swallowing a few drops of coriander essential oil, you’re helping fight off bacteria.
- Cheese – The process of fermenting turns certain cheeses – such as cheddar, Swiss, Parmesan, and gouda – into great sources of probiotics.
- Yogurt – Look for ones that are labeled “contains live and active cultures.”
Take other preventative measures
You can also try the following to help prevent yeast infections:
- Skip dyes and scents – Use unscented sanitary pads and tampons as well as white toilet paper.
- Don’t overuse antibiotics – Many illnesses won’t be helped by antibiotics, which kill helpful bacteria that keep the vagina’s pH levels where they need to be. If your vagina is too acidic, you can be more likely to end up with a yeast infection. Take antibiotics when your doctor recommends them.
- Keep your blood sugar levels under control – If you have diabetes, keeping your blood sugar levels well controlled can help prevent yeast infections.
- Boost your immune system – You’re less likely to get a yeast infection if you get enough sleep.

What are Yeast and Candida?
Yeast is a fungus that converts carbohydrates to alcohols and carbon dioxide. Candida is a family of yeasts found in human tissues that are kept under control by beneficial bacteria found along the intestinal tract. When the beneficial bacteria are reduced, most frequently by the use of antibiotics, Candida can rapidly overgrow and cause several conditions such as thrush and skin or vaginal yeast infections. The Yeast-Free Diet isn’t for Everyone
Much like the fad of gluten-free diets that are not medically indicated, a yeast-free diet is not necessary for everyone. Severely restrictive diets may help a person feel well overall simply because of the foods that are eliminated. Once processed, packaged and unhealthy foods are off limits the only choice left is to eat healthily. A yeast-free diet basically entails consuming non-starchy vegetables, lean meats, fruit, and water, while eliminating most processed and high sugar foods and increasing physical activity. This is also referred to a well-balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
At this time there is no evidence-based research that supports the use of a yeast-free diet, but restricting consumption to only healthy, nutrient-dense foods may alleviate many symptoms thought to be associated with a variety of medical issues for any individual. What to eat to beat candida
Fatigue, bloating, recurrent thrush and urinary tract infections can all be symptoms of candida – but changing your diet can help fight the condition.
What is candida?
A yeast that lives in the mouth, gut and vagina, candida only causes problems if it grows out of control.
Antibiotics, stress, the contraceptive pill, HRT and a diet high in sweet foods and drinks can all trigger it to grow out of hand, causing symptoms such as persistent thrush, urinary tract infections like cystitis, fatigue, thinning hair, and bloating.
How can diet fight candida?
Your doctor may not diagnose candida, as it’s only medically recognised in people with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV. So if you have the symptoms listed above and they’re not clearing, see a natural health expert who can diagnose candida with a saliva test.
An anti-candida diet is considered the best way to tackle the condition. It effectively starves the yeast by removing the foods that help it thrive. But be warned: the anti-candida diet is tough. There are lots of foods and drinks you have to avoid, and you need to follow it for at least three months to stop the candida growing again.
Avoid sweet foods
Candida feeds on sugar and having excess amounts in your diet may be one of the factors that caused the yeast to thrive in the first place.
You need to cut out all cakes, biscuits and sweetened foods, from breakfast cereals to ready-made sauces. Check labels and prepare food from scratch to cut your sugar intake.
Beware of natural sugars
It’s not just added sugar you need to avoid – many fruits are high in natural sugars, particularly dried fruit, and these fruit sugars can also encourage overgrowth.
Fresh apples and pears are lower in sugar so are fine to eat, but always go for the whole fruit; in juices, the sugars are concentrated. Dairy contains lactose, or milk sugar, so you’ll need to avoid most dairy products as well.
Stay away from fermented foods
Yeast in your diet can also feed candida. So avoid fermented foods, including yeast extract, bread, vinegar, blue cheeses, soy sauce and ketchup.
Watch your drinks
As alcohol is fermented and contains sugar, you need to avoid it. But you should also stay away from all sweetened drinks, including smoothies, squashes, fruit juices, and fizzy soft drinks. Instead, try herbal teas and still or sparkling water.
What can I eat on the anti-candida diet?
While it may sound a long list of foods to avoid, there’s a lot you can still eat while fighting candida.
- For breakfast, try porridge made with water, topped with chopped apple, seeds and sweet spices such as cinnamon
- You can also eat soda bread, as it isn’t made with yeast, and instead of jam or marmalade, try nut butters such as almond butter
- Plain live yoghurt is, unlike some dairy foods, low in lactose, and the friendly bacteria it contains are beneficial for fighting candida
- Lean meat, fish, eggs, lentils, all vegetables, rice and rice cakes are also on the menu
It may be tough, but remember if you’re strict for just three months, it could make a real difference to your symptoms.

Oh, yeast infections. They’re the worst, aren’t they? Itchy things you can’t scratch in public and can’t even really explain why you’re wiggling in your seat, distracted by wondering when you can get to the pharmacy for some Monistat. Just the thought of that terrible feeling has me reaching for an extra scoop of yogurt, one of several foods that can prevent you from getting yeast infections, because no one has time for itchy nether regions!
Yogurt with a lactobacillus acidophilus probiotic can prevent you from getting yeast infections, as can limiting sugary foods and carbohydrates. Most yeast infections are caused by the organism candida albicans, according to Medicinenet.com. If you’re part of the very lucky 25 percent of women who aren’t affected by yeast infections, you might not be aware of just how itchy and uncomfortable they can make your vagina, but it can also cause a cottage cheese-like discharge, and burning during urination or intercourse, according to Mayo Clinic. Yuck.
And that’s exactly why the 75 percent of the rest of us ladies who do deal with yeast infections regularly or even on occasion are looking for any and every way to prevent them from visiting. These are the foods to limit and eat in abundance in order to keep yeast infections at bay.
One food that can prevent yeast infections is yogurt that contains lactobacillus acidophilus, a good bacteria that can protect against that mean bacteria, candida. The University of Maryland Medical Center explained, “Lactobacillus acidophilus is the most commonly used probiotic, or “good” bacteria,”” Those healthy bacteria protect against the bad bacteria in various ways; for instance, “L. acidophilus breaks down food in the intestine, several substances are formed (such as lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide) that create an unfriendly environment for “bad” bacteria.” If you aren’t a fan of yogurt, you can take a probiotic containing lactobacillus to help fend away those bad bacteria.
Additionally, Dr. Axe recommended leafy greens that can help detox the body without adding any additional sugars to the mix; “Leafy green vegetables help alkalize the body, which fights against the acidic nature of yeast overgrowth.” Add another cup of spinach to that smoothie!
Apple Cider Vinegar
Home Remedies explained that regular consumption apple cider vinegar could also help prevent yeast infections, because it “help[s] to maintain the pH balance of the body.” The site also reported that taking a bath in diluted apple cider vinegar can treat a yeast infection. Apparently using a tampon soaked in apple cider vinegar is a remedy, too, but you should definitely check with your doctor before trying any of these methods.
Low Sugar Foods
It’s important to understand that candida lives on sugar, so a diet heavy in sugar or carbohydrates is candida’s dream. U.S. News shared, “[T]he more sugar there is in your body, the more the yeast will thrive, potentially leading to an overgrowth.” One of the ways to prevent yeast infections is to lower your sugar intake, and to watch out for refined sugars and carbohydrates described with other words, “like glucose, fructose, lactose and maltose dextrose.”

Symptoms and causes of vulvovaginitis
The signs of vaginitis can vary depending on what is causing it.
- Vulva and vagina red, irritated, swollen.
- Itching, burning, and pain in the vulva or vagina.
- Pain or discomfort during sex.
- Feeling like you need to urinate more often than usual.
Vaginal discharge that is not normal:
- For yeast infections, the discharge is usually thick, white and odorless.
- With bacterial vaginosis, there may be vaginal discharge that is grayish, frothy, and fishy.
- With trichomoniasis, the discharge is often frothy, yellow-green, odorless, and may have blood stains.
Symptoms of vaginitis can be very obvious or subtle, but sometimes no vaginitis shows up at all. It is recommended that you pay attention to how vaginal discharge usually looks, feels and smells, so it is easier to notice any changes that could be signs of vaginitis or other infections.
Diagnosis of vulvovaginitis
Vaginitis is diagnosed based on symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and test collection as directed by a physician.
What examination and tests can be prescribed?
- A urine test, which is a non-invasive test, detects infectious bacteria or blood in the urine.
- A physical examination, which includes an examination of the pelvis and vagina. The doctor will examine the labia and vagina.Sometimes a speculum is inserted into the vagina to improve visualization and a sample of any discharge is taken. A vaginal swab or sample will be sent to the laboratory for further testing. These tests will help determine the cause of vaginitis so that it can be effectively treated.
Classification of vulvovaginitis
A lack of estrogen can lead to a type of vaginitis called atrophic vaginitis. Atrophic vaginitis is when you have irritation but no abnormal discharge.
Factors that can lead to estrogen deficiency.
- Improper work of the ovaries or their absence;
- Unbalanced diet, increased physical activity.
The three most common types of acute vaginitis
Bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis and trichomoniasis.
Sexual activity with vulvovaginitis.
It is important to talk to your doctor about whether it is safe to have sex while treating vaginitis. If the infection has not been completely cleared, it is possible that you could pass it on to your partner and then get infected again.
Sexual activity while you are being treated for a yeast infection is relatively safe, while some other infections can be passed between partners.
The most common symptoms of vaginitis may include:
• Vaginal itching, soreness or irritation
• Vaginal discharge Redness and swelling of the vulva
