Foot pain when waking up: 507 Insufficient Storage

Expert Treatment for Morning Foot Pain in Seattle

Many of my patients complain their feet hurt when they get out of bed first thing in the morning. This isn’t surprising. During the night when we’re sleeping our muscles repair themselves, but they also relax and get shorter. When we put weight on our feet first thing in the morning our muscles reactivate. That reactivation can be a morning wake up call for all kinds of foot conditions.

Here are 5 reasons your feet hurt when you wake up in the morning.

1. Plantar Fasciitis

The most common reason your feet can hurt in the morning is due to a condition called plantar fasciitis or heel pain. It’s caused by an inflammation of the structure that runs along the bottom of your foot called the plantar fascia. When you sleep this structure tightens up causing pain when you put your feet on the ground first thing in the morning.

What can you do about this pain?

While there are some things you can do on your own to help relieve this condition, most often you’ll need to see a podiatrist, particularly if you have a moderate or severe case.

How To Treat Plantar Fasciitis at Home

Stretching

To help with the pain first thing in the morning, instead of getting out of bed right away you can use a yoga strap, belt, or towel to stretch your calf muscles. Because your calf muscles are the main structure that tightens up while you sleep this can help relieve that initial pain you feel in the morning. In addition, it’s important to stretch your calf muscles a couple of times a day to keep them loose, particularly after sitting for long periods of time.

Reducing Inflammation

To help with plantar fasciitis it’s important to keep down the inflammation. Try icing and massaging your heels using a frozen water bottle and taking an anti-inflammatory medication.

Get Rid of Non-Supportive Shoes

Check your shoes. If they’re not providing support or if they old and worn out, get rid of them. Watch the video below to learn how to purchase more supportive shoes.

Buy Over-the-Counter Inserts

Sometime over-the-counter inserts may be all you need for mild plantar fasciitis. We recommend Redi-thotics or Powersteps.

If you have a moderate or severe case of plantar fasciitis, you will need to see a podiatrist to get more advanced care. Learn more about what causes this condition and what else your podiatrist can do to heal it, by visiting our heel pain page.

2. Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis is another common condition I see in the office that can be more painful in the morning. Instead of the plantar fascia being the root of the problem, the Achilles tendon which runs along the back of the heel is the structure that becomes inflamed.

While this structure plays a different role and is in a different location than the plantar fascia, the causes of this condition are very similar to those of plantar fasciitis. However, it is more commonly seen in athletes.

Treatment of this condition is quite similar to that for plantar fasciitis including reducing inflammation, wearing more supportive shoes, stretching, and wearing orthotics. In addition, because it’s so common in athletes, it’s important to stop activities like running so the Achilles tendon can heal.

Again, while some mild forms of this condition can be treated at home, more moderate or severe versions should be seen by a podiatrist. Untreated Achilles tendonitis place you at higher risk for a Achilles tendon tear or rupture and can also lead to a degenerative form of this condition. To learn more about what else cause Achilles tendonitis, how it’s treated, and prevented by visiting us here.

3. Arthritis

Midfoot arthritis and another form of arthritis called fibromyalgia can both be more painful with first steps out of bed in the morning.

Midfoot Arthritis

Midfoot arthritis can have many different causes so its treatment can vary. For example, while osteoarthritis of the foot is caused by a breakdown in the cartilage and other tissues in the foot joints, rheumatoid arthritis is an immune disorder and causes inflammation in the foot. Treatment can entail a combination of medications specifically for those disorders, proper shoes, weight loss, cortisone injections, and orthotics.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is another type of arthritis. Typically, sufferers will have pain in multiple locations in their body. Because poor sleep is one of the primary causes, it’s not uncommon for the feet to feel more painful first thing the morning. Often the pain will dissipate with movement. Treatments for fibromyalgia in the feet focus primarily on providing better foot support. If a patient has flat feet or pronates it will be important to obtain over-the-counter or custom orthotics to keep the feet in proper alignment. Foot massage and hot foot soaks with Epsom salts can also be helpful. Mild stretching with a belt or yoga strap before getting out of bed can also help reduce foot pain with first steps in the morning.

4. Overall Foot Muscle Pain

Overall muscle pain in your feet can occur if you don’t get a good night’s sleep or if your body is not properly conditioned. For that reason, overall muscle pain in the feet is more common in weekend warriors or people who exercise once in a while.

To prevent overall muscle pain in your feet, get proper rest, soak your feet in a moderately hot Epsom salt bath after working out, and give yourself a foot massage. For long term prevention it’s important to train properly for your sport and build up slowly, no more than 10% a week.

5. Foot Cramps

In addition to overexertion, foot cramps may also be caused by dehydration, lack of certain nutrients, certain medications, and hormonal factors. Prevention of foot cramps involves getting to the root of the problem with your doctor or podiatrist. Learn more about how to prevent foot cramps here.

Aching Feet in the Morning

If you are an athlete or if you simply spend a lot of time on your feet, you may have noticed that the bottom of your feet hurt in the morning. Some patients describe it as “aching feet in the morning”. Some even complain after they’ve sat for a long time at a desk. It may be one foot or both. The pain decreases when you are wearing shoes, and you do not feel it while you are running or engaging in other forms of exercise.

For an athlete, this sensation can be relatively alarming. The good news is it’s more than likely nothing serious. Pain in the bottom of the feet after long periods of rest, such as sleeping overnight or sitting at a desk for eight hours, is a classic symptom of plantar fasciitis, as well as Achilles tendonitis. The exact location of the pain in the bottom of your feet will help to determine which of these is your culprit.

Read on for a breakdown of exactly why plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis causes the bottom of feet to hurt in the morning, or when you stand after sitting for a while, and what to do about it. Plantar Fasciitis & Achilles Tendinitis FAQs

Does Plantar Fasciitis Cause Aching Feet in the Morning?

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue along the bottom of the foot which lends support to the arch of the foot. Think of it as a shock-absorbing bowstring, pulled tight beneath the arch of your foot.

If too much tension and stress are placed on this bowstring, it can tear. Repetitive stretching and tearing in the fascia causes inflammation and irritation, which results in the pain you feel in the bottoms of your feet when you wake up in the morning.

With plantar fasciitis, the pain will be localized in the heel area, or in the arch of the foot. Early in the course of the injury, the pain will only present when you place weight on the plantar fascia after a period of rest. As the injury progresses and worsens, the pain will persist even after you’ve been up and about for several hours.

Why Do My Feet Hurt When I Wake Up?

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis can occur for any number of reasons, including:

  • Age. Plantar fasciitis is most common between the ages of 40 and 60.
  • Certain types of exercise. Activities that place a lot of stress on your heel and attached tissue, such as long-distance running, ballistic jumping activities, ballet dancing and aerobic dance, all contribute to early-onset plantar fasciitis. If you are an athlete, for instance, and have recently begun an intense bout of training for a marathon, you may experience pain in bottoms of your feet in the mornings due to plantar fasciitis.
  • Foot mechanics. Being “flat-footed”, or having extremely high arches or even an abnormal walking pattern affects the way weight is distributed along the plantar fascia.
  • Obesity. Extra weight puts extra stress on the plantar fascia.
  • Occupations that keep you on your feet. Aside from athletes, factory workers, teachers, nurses, or others who spend most of their workday walking or standing on hard surfaces can damage the plantar fascia.

Is There a Treatment for Aching Feet in the Morning?

Most people afflicted with plantar fascia can improve their condition with conservative methods. Before you get out of bed in the morning, try massaging your foot and stretch the plantar fascia. You can roll your foot over a golf ball or massage it with your hand.

Icing the painful area is also helpful. Medications such as ibuprofen and naproxen will ease the pain and inflammation associated with plantar fasciitis.

Will Achilles Tendonitis Cause Aching Feet in the Morning?

Aching Feet in the Morning: Achilles Tendonitis

If you’ve attempted to treat plantar fasciitis and are still asking “why do my feet hurt when I wake up?”, Achilles tendonitis could present similar symptoms.

The Achilles tendon is the most powerful tendon in the human body. It connects the backs of your calf muscles to your heel bone and enables movement in the ankle.

Achilles tendinitis is an overuse injury of this tendon and is most common in runners who have suddenly increased the intensity or duration of their runs. It’s also common in middle-aged people who play sports regularly.

Achilles tendinitis can occur for many reasons, including but not limited to:

  • Your sex. Achilles tendinitis is most common in men.
  • Age. The older you are, the more common Achilles tendinitis becomes
  • Physical problems. If you have flat feet more strain is placed on the Achilles tendon. Obesity and overly-tight calf muscles are also contributing factors.
  • Training choices. Running in worn-out shoes increases the risk of tendinitis. Tendon pain will occur more frequently in cold weather and running in hilly terrain can predispose you to Achilles injury.
  • Medical conditions. People who have psoriasis or high blood pressure are at higher risk of developing Achilles tendonitis.
  • Medications. Certain types of antibiotics are correlated with higher rates of Achilles tendinitis.

How Do You Treat Achilles Tendinitis?

Aching Feet in the Morning: Treatment for Achilles Tendinitis

Tendinitis responds well to self-care methods. If your early morning foot pain is a result of Achilles tendinitis, the pain will be localized to the tendon area, on the back of your ankle above the heel. Stretching this area several times throughout the day can be helpful in alleviating symptoms.

Over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen will help reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Avoiding exercise for a few days or switching to an activity like swimming that doesn’t strain the Achilles tendon can help ease the pain.

Icing the painful area is always helpful.

It seems that you just woke up, and your legs seem to be full of fatigue, although you seem to have rested for 8 hours. Be on the lookout, this can be both a sign of a serious illness, and a signal that it is worth choosing a more comfortable last and reducing the number of steps taken per day. Our colleagues from Wday.ru and journalists from 76.RU figured out why legs can hurt in the morning and when this is a reason to turn to a specialist.

According to Vladimir Tsukanov, an orthopedic traumatologist and surgeon, , external factors can provoke pain in the legs in the morning – for example, injuries, improperly selected shoes, long walking the day before or an uncomfortable posture. There are also internal factors that can cause such pain, such as impaired blood circulation, nerve damage, the development of inflammation and infection.

Morning leg pain may indicate arthritis or arthrosis. With these ailments, feet, calves, toes can hurt. 76.RU journalists asked rheumatologist of the Yaroslavl Regional Clinical Hospital Nadezhda Pleshkova, how can a person understand that he is developing arthrosis.

– Basically, this is a pain syndrome characteristic of arthrosis. It is associated with mechanical stress. In other words, pain that occurs when moving. Restriction of movements, starting pains – this is when a person gets up and takes the first steps with pain. Morning stiffness lasting no more than 30 minutes is characteristic of osteoarthritis. In general, you need to be more alert for articular syndrome in young people. This is an inflammatory lesion of the joints that requires active therapy. Young people generally do not suffer from osteoarthritis, and joint damage is of a different nature, says the doctor.

The expert also explained the difference between arthrosis and inflammation of the joints.

— Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. It requires treatment because, if left untreated, it can lead to loss of joint function. These are diseases such as psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout. These diseases are most often systemic, that is, they affect not only the joints, but also other body systems. Usually the whole body is involved in this process, because they are autoimmune in nature. Or metabolic, like gout, the expert notes.

In the experience of a rheumatologist, it is worth worrying if you have inflammatory pain. Inflammatory pain is characterized by morning stiffness, when a person gets up in the morning and an hour, two, three, and someone – the whole day, cannot disperse. When the joints swell, the joints of localizations uncharacteristic of osteoarthritis are affected. Say, wrist, elbow, shoulder joints. These localizations are not very typical for osteoarthritis, therefore, when they are affected, you need to think about the inflammatory lesion of the joint and seek advice from a rheumatologist. Otherwise, irreversible deformations may begin.

— There are no such patients now, but at the beginning of my work, people came with such a degree of joint deformity that they could not hold a cup, a spoon, or fasten a button. This is a very bad prognostic situation when a person cannot serve himself and needs outside help. The sooner people seek help, the better the prognosis. Because, for example, the diagnosis of Bechterew’s disease in the world, not only in our country, takes on average eight to ten years. That is, people go with a diagnosis of osteochondrosis, are treated for it, and they come to us already at the stage when the spine looks like a bamboo stick and there is practically nothing to treat when a person has already become disabled, the expert concludes.

Morning pain in the legs may also indicate gout.

— This is a disorder of uric acid metabolism. When it is produced a lot or it is very poorly excreted by the kidneys. Acid builds up in the body. In places where sodium monourate crystals are deposited, inflammation occurs. This causes the phenomena of acute arthritis, in the kidneys – urolithiasis or changes in the tubular system of the kidneys. There is also a symptom of arterial hypertension. Gout is manifested by attacks of acute arthritis, the intensity of the pain syndrome is very strong. It’s like renal colic – people scream in pain, intensive anti-inflammatory therapy is required, – says Nadezhda Pleshkova.

According to the experience of Vladimir Tsukanov, an orthopaedist-traumatologist and surgeon, morning pain in the legs can also be caused by an injury to the ligaments of the ankle joints and varicose veins. In the latter case, it is felt as heaviness and soreness in the calves and feet. In our regular column “Medlikbez” we have already figured out how to treat varicose veins and how dangerous it really is.

Morning foot pain can also be caused by osteoporosis, plantar fasciitis, thrombophlebitis, heel spurs, or flat feet.

— When a person is awake, many ailments do not manifest themselves in any way. But after a night’s rest, as a result of which the joints and muscles relax, the signs of illness worsen, leading to pain, the surgeon explains.

Expert advice: when joints swell, joint pain occurs unrelated to exercise, there is morning stiffness, if it is accompanied by rash, hair loss, fever, poor sun tolerance and changes in blood and urine tests, this is a reason to see a rheumatologist, to rule out a potentially dangerous systemic disease.

If you have frequent morning leg pain, experts advise you to follow a few simple recommendations. Namely, to choose comfortable shoes, strengthen bones, for which purpose include calcium-rich foods in the diet, strengthen joints by doing physical therapy, and, of course, keep weight within normal limits.

— Excess weight is definitely one of the reasons for the development of arthrosis. The joints of the lower extremities are one of the localizations of the lesion, since obesity is one of the provoking factors for other diseases. For example, excessive eating can be an impetus for the development of gout, which is also an unpleasant metabolic disease, concludes Nadezhda Pleshkova.

Recently, we talked about 6 serious illnesses, the symptom of which can be constant hunger. Do you sometimes feel like eating a sandwich, then a chocolate bar, nuts, although you dined quite recently?

SIMF EROPOL, September 7 – RIA Novosti Crimea. Heaviness and pain in the legs in the morning can be not only a sign of overexertion the day before, but also a signal of the development of serious diseases. Vladimir Tsukanov, an orthopedic traumatologist and surgeon, spoke about this in an interview with WDay.ru.

Leg pain in the morning can be caused by both external and internal factors, Tsukanov said.

July 25, 2022, 07:45

Doctors named a dangerous cause of itching in the hands and feet

Among the external causes, the doctor names previous injuries, wearing unsuitable shoes, long walking or running the day before, as well as an uncomfortable posture during sleep. Among the external: circulatory disorders, nerve damage, the presence of infections and inflammation.

If in the case of external factors everything is more or less clear – you need to choose comfortable shoes, start strengthening your joints with daily exercises without unnecessary stress, introduce calcium-rich foods into the diet – then in the second everything is much more serious, the doctor says.

“When a person is awake, many illnesses do not manifest themselves in any way. But after a night’s rest, as a result of which the joints and muscles relax, the signs of illness become aggravated, leading to pain,” the doctor explains.

January 29, 2022, 19:12

The doctor spoke about the terrible consequences of hypothermia in the legs

Morning pain in the legs may indicate that you are developing arthritis or arthrosis, notes Tsukanov. “With these ailments, feet, calves, toes can hurt,” the doctor said.

There is also a risk that gout has begun (it is accompanied by pain in the feet), varicose veins (pain and heaviness in the calves and feet are felt), thrombophlebitis (throbbing pain in the calf muscles is characteristic) or osteoporosis (manifested by pain in the heels) .

Pain in the feet, and especially in the heels, may indicate that flat feet, plantar fasciitis (feet become inflamed and the heels are very sore) or a heel spur (the heels are very sore when walking after sleep) are developing.

August 26, 2022, 08:22

Lack of appetite can be a signal of a serious illness

Also on this list, the doctor calls erythromelalgia.

“The disease affects the feet, causing burning pain.
