Warnings

Do not use

• for children under 12 years of age
• if you are now taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (certain drugs for depression, psychiatric or emotional conditions, or Parkinson’s disease), or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug. If you do not know if your prescription drug contains an MAOI, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

How Long Can DXM Be Detected In The Body?

Dextromethorphan (DXM) is not a drug most employers and organizations test for. A 2010 study published by Laboratory Medicine said that testing for the drug often resulted in false positives for PCP. Based on its half-life, it is estimated that a healthy individual can get rid of DXM within 11 to 22 hours.

To get rid of DXM, the liver converts it into a metabolite called dextrorphan. This chemical has a half-life of about 1.7 to 5.4 hours. It may take between nine to 29 hours to fully get rid of dextrorphan after a person’s last dose.

Still, authorities are catching on to the abuse of DXM. Consumer Reports says that concerns about DXM abuse have existed since the 1960s. Some drug tests can now test for DXM, and awareness of DXM misuse is growing.

Abstaining from a drug is the only way to truly pass a drug test. Despite the consequences, some people may still take high doses of DXM and want to know how long it stays in their bodies.

Basic Facts About DXM

More than 100 over-the-counter products contain DXM, as mentioned in Consumer Reports. In addition, drugs that have DXM as an ingredient may contain other ingredients meant to soothe a cough or cold, such as pain relievers, antihistamines, and decongestants.

The most popular cold and cough medicines seem to be syrups, but they can also be sold as capsules, lozenges, or tablets. DXM is an ingredient in cold medicines of this kind as well.

These directions are meant to avoid accumulating drugs in the body and taxing the liver, which metabolizes most drugs.

Detoxing From DXM

Properly detoxing from DXM could take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, but more research is needed to give an exact timetable. A study published in the Psychopharmacology Journal in 2017 documents detox processes that take at least a week.

Pediatric dosing recommendations are tricky. You must follow the package directions very closely when giving Mucinex to children, as the dose will vary based on their age and weight. Using the immediate release formula, a dose for children between two and five years of age would be approximately 50 to 100 mg orally every 4 hours as needed, not to exceed 600 mg per day. Children between six and  eleven years of age would take approximately 100 to 200 mg orally every 4 hours as needed, not to exceed 1200 mg per day. Children aged 12 years or older may take approximately 200 to 400 mg orally every 4 hours as needed, not to exceed 2400 mg per day. 
The sustained/extended release formula comes with different recommendations for children. Using the sustained/extended release formula, children between two and five years of age may take approximately 300 mg orally every 12 hours, not to exceed 600 mg per day. Children between six and eleven years of age may take approximately 600 mg orally every 12 hours, not to exceed 1200 mg per day.  Children ages 12 years or older may take approximately 600 to 1200 mg orally every 12 hours, not to exceed 2400 mg per day. 

How to Use Mucinex

No matter which form or strength of Mucinex you choose, a few helpful tips always apply when  you take the medication. Whether you choose to take Mucinex with or without food, it is  recommended that you drink a full glass of water while taking it and extra fluids during your entire course of treatment. Without enough hydration, your body will not be able to properly loosen and thin the mucus in your airways. When using the table form of the medication, do not crush, chew, or break the tablet, as this can impact the medication’s effectiveness. Mucinex that includes a cough suppressant will stop you from coughing, but otherwise, you should expect your cough to continue as the medication works. Some people feel tired after taking Mucinex, while others feel more alert, so you should not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how it affects you. You should see a doctor if your cough worsens or you get a fever, rash, or headache, or your cough lasts more than seven days.

Side Effects

The side effects associated with Mucinex are generally mild and usually do not require medical attention. The patients were followed up for 8 months with two courses of treatment for 2 months: in the 1-2nd and 7-8th months of observation. A total of 132 patients (68 men, 64 women) aged 67.3 ± 5.1 years with DE stage III, who received Trental 400 mg per day against the background of basic therapy, were subsequently examined [16].The duration of treatment courses was 2 months. Against the background of the treatment (three courses per year), the patients showed a stabilization of the course of chronic cerebral vascular insufficiency, the risk of stroke decreased compared to the control group receiving basic therapy (acetylsalicylic acid + dipyridamole, betaxolol, glycine), approximately 2 times.

The clinical picture of the examined patients was dominated by signs of DE: decreased memory, concentration, dizziness, headache, tinnitus, sleep disorders, etc.To objectify the severity of neurological symptoms, the Bartel index was used, the value of which was slightly higher in the group of patients without MS – 67% – compared with the group of patients with MS – 62%. In the study of erythrocyte aggregation, more significant disorders were found in patients with concomitant MS. The amplitude of aggregation, reflecting the final size of erythrocyte aggregates, is also significantly higher in patients with MS. After the therapy, there was a significant regression of neurological symptoms – the Bartel index increased from 62 to 87%.On the 21st day of therapy, a significant improvement in hemorheological parameters was noted. The study showed the high efficacy of pentoxifylline (Trental) in the treatment of hemorheological and hemostatic disorders in patients with chronic cerebrovascular diseases on the background of MS. Therapy with pentoxifylline (Trental) leads to a significant regression of neurological symptoms, an improvement in hemorheological and hemostatic parameters. The unique effect of pentoxifylline on erythrocyte aggregation and deformability – one of the leading causes of hemorheology and microcirculation disorders in MS – makes pentoxifylline the drug of choice in the treatment of CCVD patients with concomitant MS.

In 2008, a meta-analysis of 5 randomized, placebo-controlled trials was carried out, which involved 763 patients who received pentoxifylline (Trental) [5].
