5 Reasons Your Weight Fluctuates
If you’re anything like us, you have days where you obsessively check your weight, hoping the number on the scale will drop at least half a pound (unfortunately, those days tend to become more and more frequent in the middle of bikini season).
But before you get all bummed out about your “number,” you should know the facts (and myths) about what affects your weight.
We asked Karen Ansel, registered dietitian in New York and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, to give us the skinny on our five most pressing weight questions:
1. Is it true that we weigh less in the morning?
Generally, yes, because you don’t have the added weight of a recent undigested meal. During the day, when you’re eating and drinking, those foods (and fluids) add weight—at least until they’re digested and excreted. Just a cup of water adds half a pound, for example—and 20 percent of most meals are water, which adds up to a lot of extra weight. Since you’re not eating or drinking during the night (unless you get the midnight munchies), your body has a chance to remove extra fluids (that’s why you pee so much in the morning when you wake up). So weigh yourself in the morning … after you pee.
2. After we go No. 2?
Yes—for obvious reasons! But for those of you who aren’t squeamish, we’ll explain. When you have a bowel movement, you’re emptying your colon. Depending how much you go, that visit to the ladies’ room can add up to half a pound a day—hence the reason you feel so much lighter after you poop. If you’re the type of person who takes care of business first thing in the morning, weigh yourself right after you go. If you’re more likely to go after breakfast, weigh yourself first so your meal doesn’t add extra pounds to the scale. Either way works as long as you’re consistent.
3. Do we really weigh more when we’re soaking wet?
Probably not. Any water on your body, or in your hair, probably wouldn’t account for more than an ounce or two (1/16th or 1/8th of a pound).
4. Does it matter if you have clothing/undies on? Or should you be totally nude?
Not really. The trick is to stay consistent from one day to the next, so you can adequately measure real change. So don’t weigh yourself in your birthday suit one day and wearing sweats and tennis shoes the next. If you do choose to weigh yourself fully clothed, you can deduct anywhere from a half a pound to two pounds (depending what you’re wearing) to get your “real” weight.
5. We know that muscle weighs more than fat. So does that mean if we buff up for summer, we’ll weigh more?
Muscle does weigh more than fat, so if you gain muscle without losing fat, you’ll end up weighing more. Ideally, you want to gain muscle while losing fat, so the number on the scale shouldn’t change that much if you’re truly improving your fitness and body composition.
A little side note: If the number on the scale affects the quality of your day, it’s time to ditch your scale. Still can’t rid yourself of your daily weigh-in? Focus on staying between a 5-pound-range (plus or minus)—not an exact weight. If your weight fluctuates a couple of pounds, it might just be because you’re in between bowel movements, or you had a salty meal.

Keep those fluids coming! “Being dehydrated causes the body to hoard water,” Lyon says, leading you to carry up to four excess pounds around your midsection. Aim for at least eight cups of water or other fluids daily.
Yep, you read that right. High-water foods like fruits and veggies will fill you up faster, says Jaclyn London, Nutrition Director at the Good Housekeeping Institute. Start your meal with soup, salad or her favourite pick: Pre-dinner sliced crudity and spicy hummus. The combo of caspsaicin (a spice in hot peppers) and the chickpeas’ soluble fibre can help curb hunger.
Research has linked snacking on nuts with having a lower waist circumference. Nuts are rich in monounsaturated fats, making them a more satisfying pick than pretzels. Make sure you stick to the unsalted versions to stave off sodium-induced puff, and keep in mind one serving is about a small handful.

Add low-fat milk to your morning cereal and you may have a belly-busting win. Diets high in calcium-containing foods have been linked with healthier body weight. Plus, the minerals found in dairy products—calcium, potassium and magnesium—can help to counterbalance bloat-inducing sodium.
“Most women don’t want to talk about it, but you really have to set aside a specific time each day to use the bathroom,” notes Judith Reichman, M. D., a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, Los Angeles. If you don’t, it’s too easy to give into feeling rushed and ignore the urge to go.” Once you’ve trained your brain to dismiss your body’s signals, you set the stage for bloat-inducing constipation.
Rather than scarfing down meals, make a point of chewing each bite at least 10 before swallowing. “The body has to work overtime to break down food in the stomach and intestines, which can lead to major gas and indigestion,” Dr. Reichman says. Plus, when you eat fast, you’re more prone to swallowing air, which can ratchet up your risk of developing a potbelly.

Consider these calorie terms using the example of ordinary kefir with a fat content of 2.5%.

The same situation can be if the mother restricts the baby in sucking, for example, strictly for 15-20 minutes. The baby often does not have time to get to the rear milk. Let’s remember that for the last 50 years, doctors have dealt mainly with children who were fed with formula.Accordingly, much of the knowledge and laboratory tests are applicable only to this group of children. The presence of sugar in the stool of a bottle-fed baby is a pathology. Sugar in the stool of a breastfed baby is normal!
A significant amount of sugar can be the result of incorrect recommendations for feeding the baby (frequent breast changes during feeding, limiting the duration of sucking, pumping after feeding), because the baby gets a lot of lactose-rich foremilk.Lactose intolerance and a newborn baby is an unheard-of combination !!!
Dysbacteriosis of the newborn
This condition is extremely popular. The baby is known to be born with sterile intestines. If from the moment of birth nothing but the mother’s nipple gets into his mouth (which, by the way, is only designed by nature), then quite quickly the child’s gastrointestinal tract is seeded with normal microflora. Colostrum and breast milk contain factors that promote the growth of normal microflora and suppress pathogenic ones.If breastfeeding was organized incorrectly (and this case, unfortunately, is the most common), if already in the first day after childbirth, before getting to know the maternal microflora, the baby began to receive a variety of fluids through the mouth, colonization of the intestine is far from ideal.
But even so, breast milk will help to cope with the problems. The most interesting thing happens when the child appears at home. The normal stool of a breastfed baby is liquid, yellow, with white lumps, maybe 7-10 times a day, a little bit or 1 time in several days, but in a large volume.Most often, stool occurs 3-5 times a day, in babies in the first months of life. Local pediatricians call these normal children’s poop diarrhea and send their mother to have a feces test for dysbiosis.
This does not take into account the fact that the baby for the first six months of life has the right to dysbiosis in his intestines and to any stool, especially if at the same time he grows and develops well. Then treatment begins, one of the main points of which is the transfer of the child, for example, to a fermented milk mixture.Pediatricians are not to blame. They are accustomed to a bottle-fed baby’s stool, which is thicker and more uniform. An even more interesting situation occurs later, when, despite drinking, for example, various biological products, microorganisms that are not suitable for his intestines continue to be sown in the child. In this case, the mother is told that it is all about her milk, and insists on stopping breastfeeding.
The following case is indicative in this respect. The breastfed baby was constantly sown with Candida fungi and hemolyzing Escherichia coli, in large quantities.No treatment had any effect on these microorganisms. Mom was told all the time that the milk was to blame. After feeding the baby to one year old, the mother took him away from the breast. The child began to get sick often, but mushrooms and sticks remained in the same quantities.
Milk culture for sterility
When sowing milk for sterility in 50-70% of cases, various microorganisms are sown, most often Staphylococcus aureus and epidermal. If it is not possible for the “home” strain of Staphyloccocus aureus to settle on the baby, a hospital strain will take its place.But this is not scary for a breastfed baby, the mother’s body, by developing appropriate antibodies, will help the baby. The presence of staphylococcus in milk does not affect its quality in any way. Staphylococcal enterocolitis, with which mothers are often frightened, convincing them to stop feeding with their “poisonous” milk, is an extremely rare condition that occurs in diseases of the immune system, and the occurrence of which is facilitated by artificial feeding!
