Maybe you partied hard and had a little too much to drink — or maybe a lot too much — so you turn to the internet to search for cures to a hangover.
To spare you the bleary morning-after research, here’s what you should know before you drink.
How much alcohol will trigger a hangover?
If you have to ask, count yourself lucky not to have experienced one.
Not surprisingly, the more alcohol you consume, the better your chances of getting a hangover. Binge drinking of four or more drinks for women and five or more drinks for men during any one episode increases the likelihood of a hangover, Laura J. Veach, an associate professor of general surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., said in an email.
What causes a hangover?
Dr. Veach said a hangover occurs when the concentration of alcohol in one’s system is decreasing. It is at its worst when all the alcohol has been eliminated.
“Addiction specialists have often noted that a hangover is technically a form of alcohol withdrawal at its most benign,” she said.
The scientific community does not completely understand what causes hangovers, Dr. Preston R. Miller, a surgeon at Wake Forest, said in an email. Alcohol is a diuretic that causes dehydration and irritation of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to nausea and dilation of blood vessels, which can cause the headaches associated with hangovers.

Dr. Miller said most cures treat the symptoms, such as a headache or dehydration, “but the only way to truly get over a hangover is time.”
Dr. Marc I. Leavey, a primary care physician in Lutherville, Md., who writes a blog, “String of Medical Pearls,” said in an email that the products were “gimmicks” that either relied on a placebo effect or were no more effective than slowly sipping ice chips or an electrolyte sports drink.
“Alcohol consumption is a billion-dollar market,” he wrote. “It would seem logical that attempts to cash in on the inevitable aftermath would spawn any number of products claiming to help, despite the lack of any foundation for those claims. ”
Does drinking clearer liquors help?
Dr. Glatter recommended staying away from dark-colored liquors such as bourbon and whiskey. They contain more congeners, complex organic molecules that give the liquors their color and taste but also generate more intense hangovers. Better to drink clearer liquors, such as vodka and gin, which have fewer congeners, he said.
How can I ease the intensity of a hangover?
Once the damage is done, Dr. Reed Caldwell, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, recommended hydrating with water, electrolyte drinks or coconut water, getting proper nutrition and exercise and taking a cool shower. He added that caffeine may help relieve symptoms from poor sleep but it will not reverse the effects of alcohol or a hangover.
Before you start drinking, eat some food (it slows the absorption of alcohol) and have something nonalcoholic between drinks. Before bed, take a nonsteroidal pain reliever and drink water, Dr. Glatter said.
Hangover cures remain a hotbed of research, he said, adding: “I think we’re going to get there. We’re not there yet.”

Can You Breastfeed If You’re Hungover? Experts Explain
If you’re a breastfeeding parent, then you’re likely already aware that breastfeeding your baby comes with its own set of guidelines to follow to ensure the safest and healthiest experience possible. One of the most well-known “rules” of breastfeeding is that alcohol consumption is discouraged. You probably already know that you shouldn’t drink heavily while nursing, but what about after drinking? At some point, many mothers will wonder if you can breastfeed while hungover, and it’s definitely a valid question.
Most doctors agree that the best thing for any nursing mother to do is to avoid beer, liquor, and wine if they know they’ll be putting the baby on their breast later on. According to official guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), avoiding alcohol is the safest option. The CDC notes that while moderate alcohol consumption (up to one drink per day) is not known to be harmful to infants, exposure to more than that through breast milk could be damaging to an infant’s development, growth, and sleep.
Should You Avoid Drinking Altogether When Breastfeeding?
This is obviously important guidance, but all of that being said, you don’t need to swear off all alcohol for the next few months (or even years) while you breastfeed. Romper spoke about this with Dr. Jessica Madden, board-certified pediatrician and neonatologist, International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and medical director at Aeroflow Breastpumps. “It is never safe to drink alcohol while pregnant, but it is safe to have an occasional alcoholic drink while breastfeeding,” Dr. Madden says. “One alcoholic drink is defined as a 12 oz. of beer, 5 oz. of wine, or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits. We know that there is no risk of harm to breastfeeding babies if their moms drink one-two alcoholic drinks per week.”
If you’re drinking more than that, many moms choose to “pump and dump,” which essentially means that they pump breast milk after drinking, then toss it instead of giving it to their little one. In the few hours after drinking, these moms will typically give their child milk they pumped before drinking, or they’ll supplement with formula, but this only needs to be done if you yourself are still feeling the effects of alcohol. “In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk,” noted the breastfeeding website KellyMom. Alcohol does not stay in your breast milk, just like it doesn’t stay in your bloodstream.
Should You Breastfeed When You’re Hungover?
OK, so it’s fine to get your drink on (to an extent) while nursing. But how long do you really need to wait before you can allow your baby back on your breast? Dr. Madden notes that it’s recommended for moms to wait at least two hours after each alcoholic beverage to breastfeed.
If it’s been more than two hours later and you’re feeling extremely hungover, you might be weary about breastfeeding. “In most cases, hangovers do not occur unless one has been drinking heavily,” Dr. Madden points out. “So, you will need to make sure that enough time has elapsed between your last alcoholic drink and breastfeeding. A rule of thumb is that you should wait to breastfeed for at least two hours per drink consumed, i.e. wait two hours to breastfeed after one drink, four hours to breastfeed after two drinks, and so on.”
Basically, if you know you’re going to be drinking a lot, keep track of how many drinks you have and what time you have them, and then do the math from there. If you had, say, three drinks, and it’s been eight hours since your last drink, you’re probably in the clear to breastfeed — even if you do feel less than great. If you still feel tipsy or intoxicated, though, skip the breastfeeding.
There are other things to take into consideration when breastfeeding while hangover. Dr. Madden says that if you choose to nurse while you’re feeling hungover, “you should take special care to hydrate yourself, make sure not to bedshare with your baby — the fatigue associated with being hungover puts one at risk of rolling onto their baby while sleeping — and to also have someone else watch your baby so you can rest and recover.”

Can Babies Consume Alcohol Through Breast Milk?
There’s no shame in a breastfeeding mom having a few drinks, but following these guidelines and waiting things out is really important. “If mothers breastfeed too soon after drinking, the alcohol can pass from mother to baby in milk,” Dr. Madden says. “This can cause babies to become drowsy, difficult to rouse, and to feed poorly.”
The CDC also notes that high levels of alcohol consumption can actually interfere with letdown. Excessive drinking over time can lead to a decreased milk production, and may cut your breastfeeding journey short. It can also affect the baby’s sleep patterns and early development.
Tips For Safely Drinking While Breastfeeding
While you should avoid getting very intoxicated any time you want when you’re a breastfeeding mom, you can still feel free to enjoy yourself. Keep these tips in mind:
- Have 1 to 2 alcoholic drinks per week. Dr. Madden recommends trying to stick with this. Not only will it barely affect your breastfeeding schedule, but it will also keep you feeling your best.
- Track your drinks if needed. If you’re going out and you know you’re going to have more than one drink, be careful about noting the times of each drink and how much alcohol you’re consuming.
- Do not breastfeed or pump if you still feel intoxicated. “This means that you probably still have alcohol in your system that will pass into your milk,” Dr. Madden says. If you’re in physical pain, pump to relieve the discomfort and then toss that milk (as much as that hurts to do).
- Don’t use pumping and dumping as a way to nurse faster. “Pumping and dumping does not speed up the time it takes for your body to metabolize alcohol,” Dr. Madden says. “So it’s not safe to plan to feed your baby after pumping and dumping if not enough time has passed between drinking and breastfeeding.” Again, only pump and dump to relieve physical discomfort.
Have a glass of wine once or twice a week if needed, go out and have fun sometimes — just be responsible at the end of the day, and you and your baby should be just fine!

How to cure a hangover: what one man found after a 10-year quest | Books
Along with a distant relative prattling on about their objectionable politics, there is one other dread at this time of year: the hangover.
Despite millennia of drinking, there is no consensus on a cure for excessive drinking. But a cure is exactly what Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall set out to find in his new book Hungover.
Drawing on a decade of research, and years more of informal research, Bishop-Stall’s quest took him around the world: drink, suffer, repeat. As he points out in the book, and as anyone who has scoured the internet for a solution to their booze-fuelled hedonism can attest, there has been little scientific research into the hangover remedy.
Bishop-Stall told the Guardian: “The most obvious reason is just a sort of moralistic one. Doctors who are pressed for time say: ‘Why am I going to waste my time on this? All you have to do is not drink.”
“And it’s kind of a hard logic to argue against. [But] at the same time it’s probably the most common malady. The economy suffers, people’s daily lives are affected. So why can’t we put a little bit of effort into figuring this out?”
Bishop-Stall threw himself enthusiastically into his research. He took part in an “extreme Las Vegas” trip – from going up in a fighter plane and piloting a fighter jet, where the G-force made him feel like he was” sweating backwards”, to leaping off the 855ft Stratosphere.
He strove to do all these things, necessarily, with a booming hangover. He achieved it via Martinis and red wine, leading him to wake up in an unfamiliar hotel room and discover in his pockets “a folding corkscrew [and] a small doorknob”.
Bishop-Stall found the Stratosphere leap, and its corresponding blast of adrenaline, particularly effective. But for those who don’t have a tall building and bungee rope to hand, there is some science behind the more traditional cures.
“One of the things that I found most interesting,” Bishop-Stall writes in the book, “was commonalities through time.
“Many of the things that the ancients used, whether pickled eggs or boiled cabbage or charcoal, they all have, we now realize, scientific footing. They’re the precursors to the things we try out to this day.”

Even the oft-suggested hair of the dog, a metaphor which, according to Bishop-Stall, dates back to Ancient Greece in 400 BCE and Antiphanes, has some merit.
“Take the hair, it is well written,
Of the dog by which you’re bitten,
Work off one wine by his brother,
One labor with another.”
Antiphanes’ suggestion extended beyond alcohol, according to Bishop-Stall – to “all forms of medical treatment” – but there is science behind it, around ethanol, which is found in alcoholic drinks and methanol, and is used in things like windscreen wiper fluid or fuel, but, Bishop-Stall writes, also finds its way into alcoholic drinks.
It might provide some solace to anyone currently suffering from a heavy night that hangovers are far from a modern problem. In fact, as Bishop-Stall points out, people have been suffering for thousands of years, from Noah, who got sozzled on wine and on waking blamed his son, to the Saxons, who “stayed up drinking before the Battle of Hastings and therefore lost England to the more disciplined Normans”.
After his 10-year quest, Bishop-Stall has settled on a cure that might have saved Noah’s son, and kept England under Saxon rule.
“It really deals with deactivating the most horrendous aspects of hangover. Nausea, headache, body pain – those large things that keep you down to your bed or couch or even sometimes put you into a doctors office. You won’t have any of those.”
His cure is relatively simple, or at least relatively simple to acquire – all the ingredients are available in pharmacies, or online.
To prevent the hangover, Bishop-Stall will quaff – after drinking but before sleep – milk thistle, for the liver; the amino acid and immune system aid N-acetylcysteine; vitamins B1, B6 and B12, which boost metabolism; and that famous gift to Jesus, frankincense – an anti-inflammatory.
So no more sickness, no more pain. No more bothering doctors. But one thing Bishop-Stall still hasn’t managed to crack is “the tiredness, lethargy and grouchiness” that has more to do with a lack of deep sleep than the booze itself.
Bishop-Stall says he is still working on a way to combat those symptoms, but is yet to find “a safe way that I would actually recommend to others”. The quest continues.
