Biotin has emerged as one of the most popular dietary supplements for healthy skin, hair and nails. Also known as vitamin B7 or coenzyme R, it reduces hair loss and supports metabolic health. While the benefits of biotin are well-known, few people are aware of its side effects, such as mild nausea and increased thirst. However, doses of up to up to 10 milligrams a day are safe, according to Mayo Clinic. As long as you do not take more than two servings of biotin 5,000 mcg per day, you are unlikely to experience adverse reactions.

Biotin 5,000 Mcg Side Effects

Many biotin vitamins available on the market provide around 5,000 micrograms of this nutrient per serving. If you take large doses, the excess will be eliminated through urine. This means it’s impossible to have too much biotin in your system. However, there are some potential side effects you should be aware of.

First of all, this nutrient may cause falsely low or falsely high thyroid test results when consumed in excess. Additionally, biotin vitamins can interact with olanzapine, clozapine, azithromycin, roxithromycin and other drugs. If you’re taking any medications, consult a doctor before supplementing your diet with biotin.

In rare cases, biotin may cause upset stomach, mild nausea, diarrhea and skin rashes. The best way to prevent these side effects is to take your supplements with food.

Extreme adverse reactions are rare. An elderly woman who took biotin in combination with vitamin B5 for two months developed eosinophilic pleuropericardial effusion, a life-threatening disease. Researchers are unsure whether biotin or something else caused this problem.

Biotin 5,000 mcg side effects may also include increased thirst and insomnia. Unlike other supplements, this nutrient does not cause weight gain, constipation or digestive problems. However, allergic reactions may occur.

What Is Biotin?

The human body needs this water-soluble vitamin to convert protein, fats, carbs and other nutrients into energy. Biotin occurs naturally in certain foods, but it’s also available in supplement form. Since it cannot be synthesized by your cells, it must be obtained through diet.

Beef liver, meat, egg yolks, salmon, dairy, yeast, avocado and sweet potatoes are among the best dietary sources of biotin. People who are struggling with hair loss, brittle nails and certain skin conditions often take supplements containing biotin. These products are also recommended during pregnancy when this vitamin is required for normal fetal development.

How much biotin you need on a daily basis depends on your age and overall health. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), adults over 19 years old should get approximately 30 micrograms per day. Nursing mothers need at least 35 micrograms of biotin daily.

The Health Benefits of Biotin

Biotin is typically recommended to those with biotin deficiency, hair loss, mild depression and seborrheic dermatitis. It’s also prescribed during pregnancy and lactation. According to a study published in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry in 2013, biotin increases insulin secretion and improves glucose tolerance. Therefore, it may help in diabetes prevention and management.

A 2016 study published in Neuropharmacology indicates that biotin may help limit or reverse multiple sclerosis-related symptoms. These benefits are due to its ability to increase energy production and fatty acid synthesis.

A 2015 review published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology notes that biotin exhibits anti-inflammatory and <ahref=”https: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov=”” pubmed=”” 26168302″=””> </ahref=”https:>immune-boosting properties. Therefore, it strengthens your natural defenses and protects against various diseases. Arthritis pain, for example, is often due to inflammation, so a biotin-rich diet may help relieve your symptoms.

Now that you know how biotin benefits your health, get more of this nutrient into your diet. Supplements can help, too. You may experience faster hair growth, greater energy and enhanced mental focus. Since 5,000 micrograms is a high dose, check with your doctor before taking this supplement.

Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Biotin?

If you’ve looked at hair and nail supplements, you’ve probably seen biotin as the universal ingredient. But can it actually help give you long, luscious hair and hard-as-rock nails? And is it possible to overdo it on your biotin intake?

What is Biotin?

Biotin (aka B7) is one of the many water-soluble B-vitamins that are necessary for your body to function. Its main role in the body is as an important cofactor that’s essential for metabolizing macronutrients. It gets absorbed in the small intestines and stored in the liver.

Biotin Benefits

Biotin plays an important role in metabolizing glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids. Its role as an enzyme in the metabolism of amino acids is crucial for protein creation, which results in building strong healthy hair and nails.

While the research is limited, small studies suggest that it can help reduce brittle nails that easily split or crack. The same goes for healthy hair. Studies show that individuals with a biotin deficiency can benefit from supplementing to help with hair growth. Hair is easily damaged by sun-exposure, over washing, and constant heat from the hair dryer or other styling tools. Biotin plays a role in building the protein that helps regrow healthy hair, which is why it has become such a popular hair and nail supplement.

Signs of bIotin Deficiency

Symptoms of biotin deficiency typically come on gradually. These include:

  • thinning hair and hair loss on all areas of the body
  • brittle nails
  • a scaly red rash around the eyes, nose, and mouth

In the most severe cases, a deficiency can lead to:

  • neurological conditions such as depression
  • lethargy
  • hallucinations
  • tingling of the extremities

Typically though, a biotin deficiency is rare. However, if you’re not eating a well-balanced diet or are avoiding certain food groups, you may have a greater deficiency risk. In addition, those with a genetic disorder for biotinidase deficiency are at risk as it prevents the body from releasing free biotin. Pregnant and lactating women should also be mindful of their intake. At least a third of pregnant women develop a slight deficiency regardless of normal intake.

How much biotin do you need?

Adults need at least 30 mcg per day. If you’re eating a well-balanced diet that includes lean protein and plant-based foods like veggies, nuts, and seeds, you’re likely hitting your base level.

  • eggs
  • avocado
  • whole grains
  • sweet potatoes
  • broccoli
  • almonds
  • onions
  • peanuts

Is there such a thing as

too much Biotin?

Actually, there’s no upper limit for biotin because it’s water-soluble, which means your body only stores what it needs. The rest is excreted in your urine.

Additionally, there’s no evidence of high levels of biotin being harmful, which is why you’ll commonly see biotin supplements containing 5,000 to 10,000 mcg. These levels ensure your body gets as much biotin as it needs and absorbs it in the small intestines. Research has shown even mega-doses of 300 mg (that’s 300,000 mcg) to help with treating multiple sclerosis have no adverse side effects.

One caveat is that taking a lot of biotin can interfere with lab test results. The technology used to measure levels of thyroid hormones and vitamin D, for example, can show high or low test results. For this reason, it’s important to inform your doctor if you’re taking a biotin supplement.

Should you take a biotin supplement?

If you are avoiding certain biotin-rich foods or are experiencing brittle hair or nails, you may benefit from supplementing! Since biotin is water-soluble, you don’t have to worry about excess. The little extra boost may do wonders for your hair and nails.
