Ketogenic celebrities. 15 Celebrities Who’ve Embraced the Keto Diet: Insights and Experiences

How has the keto diet impacted celebrities. Which famous faces have tried the high-fat, low-carb eating plan. What results have celebrities reported from following the ketogenic diet. How do celebrities manage the challenges of the keto lifestyle.

The Ketogenic Diet: A Hollywood Favorite

The ketogenic diet, known for its high-fat and ultra-low-carb approach, has gained significant traction in recent years, particularly among celebrities. This eating plan, which typically involves sourcing about 75% of daily calories from fat, 20% from protein, and a mere 5% from carbohydrates, has been embraced by numerous actors, sports stars, and reality TV personalities. But what makes this diet so appealing to the stars, and what have their experiences been like?

Understanding the Science Behind Keto

Before delving into celebrity experiences, it’s crucial to understand the basics of the ketogenic diet. When following this eating plan, the body enters a state called ketosis within a few days. During ketosis, the body shifts from burning glucose (carbohydrates) to burning fat for fuel. This metabolic state is the cornerstone of the diet’s effectiveness.

Health Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet

  • Short-term weight loss
  • Potential improvement in type 2 diabetes outcomes
  • Possible longevity benefits (based on early rodent studies)

Research has shown that low-calorie ketogenic diets may help reduce body mass index and waist circumference in overweight or obese individuals. Additionally, a study published in Frontiers in Endocrinology revealed that people with type 2 diabetes following a ketogenic diet for two years were able to decrease their diabetes medication use by 81%.

Celebrity Spotlight: Katie Couric’s Keto Journey

Katie Couric, the former Today show anchor, shared her keto experience on Instagram in August 2018. At 61 years old, Couric reported feeling better after a week on the diet, despite experiencing some initial symptoms of the “keto flu,” including shakiness and headaches. She particularly enjoyed incorporating more fat into her diet, stating, “I’m eating mostly protein and some cheese. And I’m putting half-and-half in my iced coffee, and I gotta tell ya, it’s damn good.”

Couric’s Post-Keto Diet Exploration

Interestingly, Couric has since moved on to other diets, including the pegan diet—a combination of paleo and vegan created by functional medicine specialist Dr. Mark Hyman. This transition highlights the evolving nature of celebrity diet choices and the ongoing search for optimal nutrition.

Halle Berry: A Long-Term Keto Advocate

Halle Berry, the 56-year-old actress, stands out as a long-term advocate of the ketogenic diet. Berry has reportedly been following the keto lifestyle for an impressive 30 years, primarily as a way to manage her diabetes. Her commitment to the diet includes a preference for meat and healthy fats, such as avocados, while avoiding pasta and added sugars.

Berry’s Keto-Friendly Food Choices

  1. Lean meats
  2. Avocados
  3. Healthy oils
  4. Low-carb vegetables

Berry’s long-term adherence to the keto diet demonstrates its potential as a sustainable lifestyle choice for some individuals, particularly those managing specific health conditions.

The Kardashian Sisters: Keto Experiences

The Kardashian family, known for their influential lifestyle choices, has also explored the ketogenic diet. Kourtney Kardashian, often regarded as one of the healthiest members of the family, shared her positive keto experience through her app. She incorporates keto-friendly alternatives like cauliflower rice and broccoli rice in place of high-carb options.

Kourtney’s Keto Challenges and Adaptations

Despite her overall positive experience, Kourtney wasn’t immune to the common side effects associated with the keto diet. She reported experiencing headaches and low energy for a couple of weeks when starting the diet. To make the lifestyle more sustainable, Kourtney practices the diet for brief periods rather than as a constant eating plan.

Kim Kardashian has also dabbled in the low-carb lifestyle, further highlighting the diet’s popularity among celebrity circles. The sisters’ experiences showcase both the potential benefits and challenges of adopting a ketogenic diet.

Navigating the Keto Flu: A Common Celebrity Struggle

Many celebrities who have tried the keto diet have reported experiencing symptoms of the “keto flu” during the initial stages of their dietary transition. This set of symptoms, which can include irritability, headaches, and low energy, is a common hurdle for those new to the ketogenic lifestyle.

Managing Keto Flu Symptoms

  • Staying hydrated
  • Ensuring adequate electrolyte intake
  • Gradually reducing carbohydrate intake
  • Getting plenty of rest

While the keto flu can be challenging, many celebrities, like Katie Couric, report that these symptoms typically subside after a few days to a week, leading to improved energy and well-being.

Celebrity Keto Success Stories: Beyond Weight Loss

While weight loss is often a primary motivation for trying the keto diet, many celebrities report additional benefits that extend beyond shedding pounds. These positive outcomes can include increased energy, improved mental clarity, and better blood sugar control for those managing diabetes, like Halle Berry.

Reported Celebrity Keto Benefits

  1. Sustainable weight management
  2. Enhanced energy levels
  3. Improved cognitive function
  4. Better blood sugar regulation
  5. Reduced inflammation

It’s important to note that individual experiences with the keto diet can vary, and what works for one celebrity may not be suitable for everyone. Consulting with a healthcare professional before starting any new diet regimen is always recommended.

Adapting the Keto Lifestyle: Celebrity Strategies

Celebrities who have found success with the ketogenic diet often develop personalized strategies to make the lifestyle more sustainable. These adaptations can include incorporating brief periods of keto eating, like Kourtney Kardashian, or finding creative ways to enjoy favorite foods within the confines of the diet.

Celebrity Keto Hacks

  • Using cauliflower rice as a low-carb alternative
  • Incorporating healthy fats like avocados and nuts
  • Experimenting with keto-friendly dessert recipes
  • Practicing intermittent fasting alongside keto

These strategies demonstrate how celebrities adapt the ketogenic diet to fit their lifestyles and preferences, making it a more sustainable long-term choice.

The popularity of the ketogenic diet among celebrities has undoubtedly contributed to its widespread appeal. From Katie Couric’s short-term experiment to Halle Berry’s long-term commitment, these famous faces have shared their experiences, both positive and challenging, with the high-fat, low-carb lifestyle. While the diet has shown potential benefits for weight loss and managing certain health conditions, it’s clear that individual experiences can vary. As with any significant dietary change, it’s essential to approach the ketogenic diet with careful consideration and professional guidance.

As the ketogenic diet continues to captivate public interest, celebrity endorsements and experiences provide valuable insights into the realities of adopting this eating plan. Whether used as a short-term reset or a long-term lifestyle choice, the keto diet remains a topic of fascination in both Hollywood and beyond.

Celebrities didn’t start the ketogenic, or keto, diet trend, but they’ve certainly added fuel to the already-hot fire. The eating plan has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, and that could be due in part to its being embraced by several actors, sports stars, and reality TV stars.

The ketogenic diet is a low-carb plan to the extreme. Followers of a common version of the diet source around 75 percent of their daily calories from fat, up to 20 percent from protein (no more, as this can kick the body out of ketosis), and just 5 percent from carbohydrates. All it takes is a few days of eating this way for the body to enter ketosis, which essentially means the body starts burning fat instead of glucose (carbohydrates) for fuel.

The keto diet has been shown to have many health benefits, most notably short-term weight loss. Low-calorie ketogenic diets may help people who are overweight or have obesity reduce their body mass index and decrease their waist circumference, according to a review and meta-analysis published in March 2020 in Reviews in Endocrine & Metabolic Disorders. Additional studies on the long-term effects of the ketogenic diet on weight loss are needed.

There is also evidence that the low-carb, high-fat eating plan may help improve outcomes for people with type 2 diabetes. In one trial, people with type 2 diabetes who followed a ketogenic diet for two years were able to decrease their use of diabetes medications by 81 percent, while those in a control group increased their medication during the same time span, according to research published in 2019 in Frontiers in Endocrinology.

Early research in rodents indicates that following a ketogenic diet may even help you live longer, according to research published in June 2022 in Cell Metabolism, although further research is needed to see if similar effects are observed in humans.

Despite those potential payoffs, cutting carbs so drastically isn’t easy. Some celebs refreshingly admit to having the same troubles that everyone else experiences on the diet when starting out (commonly known as “the keto flu”), including irritability and headaches. Here are 15 stars who’ve tried or endorsed the keto diet.

2875

Katie Couric

In August 2018, the then 61-year-old former Today show anchor posted on her Instagram Stories that a week into the diet she did “feel better” but hinted that she’d experienced some symptoms of the keto flu, Women’s Health reported. “The fourth or fifth day, I felt a little shaky and headachy, but I feel much better,” Couric said. Suffice to say, the mother of two enjoyed incorporating more fat into her diet. “I’m eating mostly protein and some cheese,” she said. “And I’m putting half-and-half in my iced coffee, and I gotta tell ya, it’s damn good.” Since then, Couric, now 66, has moved on to other diets, including the pegan diet — a combination of paleo and vegan created by functional medicine specialist Mark Hyman, MD, per the Cleveland Clinic. She posted on Instagram: “Feeling good after almost a week on the Pegan reset … I need some new recipes for breakfast and not eggs. Any ideas?”

Halle Berry

The 56-year-old actress hasn’t been shy about her love for the keto diet. As Insider reported in 2021, Berry has been on the keto diet for 30 years as a way to manage diabetes. She also told People in 2018 that she’s a big meat eater and doesn’t fill up on pasta or anything with added sugar, making her a good candidate for keto. Instead, she fills her plate with healthy fats, including avocados.

Kourtney Kardashian

Kourtney is considered among the healthiest of the Kardashian bunch. According to a People story from February 2018, she shared in her app that going keto was a “really positive experience.” She eats cauliflower rice or broccoli rice in place of carbs. But just because she’s a reality TV star doesn’t make her immune to the negative side effects associated with this way of eating. Kardashian suffered from headaches and low energy for a couple of weeks and makes the diet more sustainable by practicing it for brief periods, per Poosh, her online guide to healthy living.

Kourtney’s not the only Kardashian who’s been a devotee of the low-carb lifestyle. Kim jumped on the bandwagon, too. According to a story published in December 2020 in People, she reportedly lost 60 pounds (lbs) after having her son Saint while on the Atkins 40 diet. Atkins 40, a version of the Atkins diet that is designed for people with less than 40 pounds to lose, has been around since the 1970s. Like the ketogenic diet, Atkins involves a very limited intake of carbs and high amounts of fat. The main difference is that on the Atkins diet, you’ll slowly reintroduce carbs, so ketosis will likely only come into play during phase 1.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow, the founder of wellness lifestyle brand Goop, has been criticized for doling out pretty wacky health advice in the past, including her claims about the benefits of the keto diet. According to a 2021 Insider story, the 50-year-old actress and business mogul followed a vegan keto diet to detox and ease lingering COVID-19 symptoms like fatigue and brain fog, though experts say there’s little evidence that her nutrition strategies will help.

Flash back to the summer of 2014 when the baller slimmed down his 6-foot-8-inch-tall frame. When James showed off a six-pack in a series of Instagram posts, everyone got buzzing about what changes he’d been making. Dozens of news stories revealed that the keto diet was the major reason. He told Sports Illustrated that he didn’t eat dairy, sugar, or carbohydrates for 67 days. The reasoning? To “test his mental fortitude.” Some outlets, including Business Insider, speculated that he was trying to follow Kobe Bryant, who lost weight in his mid-thirties and ended up giving his career a second wind.

Vinny Guadagnino

Guadagnino came back into the spotlight in 2018 with the reboot of MTV’s hit reality TV show Jersey Shore, this time called Jersey Shore Family Reunion. In May 2018, PopSugar reported that in the years since the MTV show aired, Guadagnino adopted the keto diet and launched a dedicated Instagram account where he goes by @ketoguido. In 2019, he released The Keto Guido Cookbook, featuring over 100 keto recipes and a seven-day keto diet meal plan. According to a March 2018 Instagram post, Guadagnino’s old way of eating had him 50 lbs heavier and looking 10 years older.

Megan Fox

The Transformers actress and mom of three turned to the keto diet to get her pre-baby body back. Fox told E! News that she cut out bread and carbs, including chips, pretzels, and crackers. She cleaned up her diet so much that the worst thing she’d take in on any given day was coffee, admitting to The View: “I don’t eat anything fun.”

Adriana Lima

What does it take to get the body of a Victoria’s Secret angel? This supermodel went on a low-carb diet and did two-hour workouts each day to prep for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show a few years ago, according to an article from The Cut. Her diet was primarily made up of green veggies, protein, and protein shakes or cereal bars as snacks. Since then, it seems she’s stuck to a keto diet, according to a story published in July 2018 in Insider.

Alicia Vikander

Vikander adopted the keto diet two months before shooting began for her role as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. According to a March 2018 article in Women’s Health Australia, Vikander’s trainer, Magnus Lygdback, could tell Vikander was struggling a bit in the beginning, but thanks to her solid willpower, she stuck to it. She stocked up on fish for protein; MCT oil, coconut oil, and avocados for fat; and plenty of low-carb veggies while filming the 2018 blockbuster.

Vanessa Hudgens

Hudgens doesn’t shy away from bacon. It’s all part of the High School Musical actress and singer’s keto diet plan, which she says helped her drop 20 lbs from her 5-foot-2-inch-tall frame in 2017 (in addition to the twice-a-day SoulCycle sessions, that is). Since then, she’s started intermittent fasting, saving the more flexible keto diet for days when she works long hours, reported a March 2021 article in Eat This, Not That! “I’m always making sure I’m getting those healthy fats in, so I eat a LOT of almond butter. You feel really energetic and supported on the keto diet,” she told People in April 2019.

2886

Tim Tebow

The former professional athlete told GQ in February 2017 that he followed the keto diet and avocados were his favorite source of fat, eating about four a day in everything from guacamole to smoothies. He rounds out his diet with eggs, sea bass, steak, and vegetables like asparagus. Peep his keto tips and seven-day keto meal plan on KetoLogic.

2887

Al Roker

Nathan Congleton/Getty Images

In March 2019, the Today co-anchor shared that he’d lost 40 lbs after following the keto diet for several months. Apparently, the low-carb eating plan also had positive effects on his cholesterol numbers. “My cholesterol — just had them checked a couple of weeks ago. Everything’s good,” he said on the show while cooking a sloppy Joe recipe he likes to pair with a keto-friendly bread recipe. As of June 2022, Roker is still following a low-carb eating plan, although it is no longer strictly keto. Thanks to daily walks and a diet that caps carbs to 100 grams per day, the weatherman shed 45 pounds over several months, he revealed on the show.

2888

Melissa McCarthy

Terence Patrick/Getty Images

The comedian lost a whopping 75 lbs by following a keto diet and taking up martial arts, reported a July 2020 article in Life & Style. Unlike other celebrities, McCarthy doesn’t believe in fad diets, severe calorie restriction, or obsession with exercise. Instead, she relies on nutrient-rich foods like lean protein, fiber, healthy fats, and tons of fruits and veggies, notes a July 2022 article in Parade. But The Bridesmaids actress isn’t interested in talking about her body: “My message is that as long as everybody’s healthy, enjoy and embrace whatever body type you have,” per the Life & Style piece.

Savannah Guthrie

Evidently, the keto diet has been making the rounds among Today mainstays. Co-host Guthrie gave the low-carb, high-fat lifestyle a try in 2018. But, per a November 2018 Women’s Health article, Guthrie’s results weren’t entirely positive. While keto seemed to make her feel mentally sharper, it sapped her energy for workouts and led to zero weight loss after a few months. The one positive? She enjoyed eating plenty of bacon, per a November 2018 People article.

Left: high carb, low fat, processed junk food, sugar, transfats… I probably took that at some point of my many weight loss processes that I’ve always went through when i was yo yo dieting … – Right: High natural fat and protein , low carb, organic greens , some complex carbs , berries , nuts …never struggles to lose weight .. always thin and a good foundation for adding a little muscle through working out. Blood work numbers great and in range … _ _ Maybe the low carb way of life makes me take in less calories then I burn, maybe I’m satiated so it makes it easier for me to do intermittent fasting, maybe my insulin levels aren’t always spiking and storing excess fat (these are all the Keto debates) . … honestly I’m just a dumb guido and don’t know why it’s worked for me .. but I’m not complaining.. I feel better than I ever felt, my blood work is great, and im motivated now to hit the gym more than ever because I always have a solid foundation to build on … no more constantly playing catch up … this way of life works for me .. check with your doctor and maybe it can work for you as well #ketoguido

One of the biggest Keto-converts and proponents of the diet is none other than Vinny Guadagnino of Jersey Shore. When the franchise returned to MTV with Jersey Shore: Family Reunion, fans were shocked to see how ripped Guadagnino had gotten since he last hit the beach on their TV screens. He attributes it all to keto, dubbing himself “The Keto Guido,” and has an Instagram account specifically for his dieting journey.

Love getting back in the lab with my brothers @druondemand @rometrav #StriveForGreatness

A post shared by LeBron James (@kingjames) on

Lebron James

Remember back in 2014 when those Instagram photos of “Skinny Lebron” first emerged? That was all thanks to keto, although Lebron James never actually used that term. Back then, the keto diet was largely unheard of by the general public and when James discussed his dietary changes, he instead called it “a mental challenge.”

For 67 days, James only ate meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables. He even turned down a custom-made cake from a Mykonos restaurant, according to Business Insider. Talk about a mental challenge. James’ diet may have been too severe and definitely not well-suited for the average person. Overall, limiting his diet to only 67 days—a little over two months—was a smart move on the NBA player’s part since research on keto is still ongoing and never intended to be a long-term dietary solution.

@demileighnp you represented Miss. Universe so well! You’re an incredible role model, and carry yourself with beauty, kindness, and grace. I’m so proud of you! ❤️

Tim Tebow

From the NFL to the MLB, Tim Tebow has done it all. The esteemed athlete is no stranger to physical fitness and a healthy diet, and since 2017 Tebow has been an outspoken supporter of the ketogenic diet. In a 2017 feature in GQ, Tebow describes why he chose the keto diet: “For me it’s more than just trying to stay in shape for sports, it’s a way of life, of trying to be healthy. Also, when so many of our next generation kids are just having sugar and carbs all the time, well, can we moderate that just a little bit?”

Tebow’s favorite food on the keto diet: avocados. This man can’t get enough of the green stuff. He puts them in smoothies, and even eats avocado ice cream. There isn’t anything an avocado can’t do, according to Tebow. He estimates that he eats around four avocados a day, which might not seem that extreme, but check out this tweet where he’s eating guacamole straight from the jar if you’re still unsure of how much this man really loves avocados.

Alicia Vikander

Alicia transformed from being a former ballerina to fearless adventurer for her turn as Lara Croft in 2018’s Tomb Raider. For seven months, she worked with Hollywood trainer to stars, Magnus Lygdback, to get in superhero shape for the role, training nearly every day. For her Lara Croft diet, they decided on the keto diet early on because it’s easy to do while traveling.

“Since we were traveling so much over the holidays, we decided the keto diet would be best because it’s easier to control the macros that way,” Lygdback told PopSugar. “It was a high-fat, no-carb diet—not even low-carb. It’s always tricky the first couple of days, but [Alicia’s] willpower is just unbelievable, and she didn’t complain, even though I could see she was struggling a little bit. She kept on bringing it every day.

#FitnessFriday Today let’s talk about food. I think the most important part of being healthy and in great shape largely depends on what and when you eat. Being diabetic most of my life, I have always had to take food very seriously. So for years, I have been following the keto or ketogenic diet. I hate the word “diet” so while you’ll see the word diet, just know I encourage you to think of it as a lifestyle change NOT A DIET! Keto is a very low-carb food plan which actually forces your body to burn fat like crazy. I also believe it’s been largely responsible for slowing down my aging process. The keto lifestyle offers so many benefits such as weight loss, (moms that’s how we get rid of our baby bellies), appetite control, more energy and better mental performance. If you’re like me, you can possibly reverse type 2 diabetes, you’ll experience better physical endurance, better skin and also less acne if that’s an issue. And it even helps control migraines! I’m sharing two links (check Stories!) that will explain the lifestyle in detail and it also offers a plan to help you get started! So today I encourage you to say yes to keto, give it a try… what do you have to lose?! ?? #FitnessFridayHB

Big day in London with my @puma and @intersport fam ? #teamlima ?: @ysaperez

A post shared by Adriana Lima (@adrianalima) on

Adriana Lima

Being an international supermodel with as big of a following as Adriana Lima, you’d expect her to have a pretty strict diet. Lima herself has been pretty open about her diet for a long time now, including her strict preparations for a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. “Definitely zero carbs for sure,” she said in the interview. “I feel much healthier. Because everybody’s different, that’s why I have a nutritionist. I go there, and he checks my blood, my breathing, everything to make sure what’s going to work for your body, you know? For me, for example, if I eat chocolate or have dairy I will feel puffy. Sometimes carbs make me feel puffy—it makes me swollen.”

Today, Lima still loves the low-carb lifestyle. In Vogue, she spoke with nutritionist Dr. Charles Passler, who also has clients like Naomi Watts and Bella Hadid under his wing. He said a low-carb diet is the key to keeping off fat.

If you eat a lot of carbohydrates, with your protein and your fat, the body’s going to use the carbohydrates for fuel first,” he says. “The body loves using carbs for fuel. So the body’s going to soak up all of those carbs, and if then you don’t need any more fuel, the body’s going to just turn the extra calories from the fat and the protein into body fat. So by eliminating the carbohydrates, and consuming the protein and the fat, it not only keeps your calories down, but it keeps your energy stable.”

Food

The keto diet is a low-carb, moderate-protein, high-fat diet. By lowering the level of the hormone insulin, the body begins to use energy by breaking down fat reserves, which ultimately reduces weight without feeling very hungry. Who of their stars evaluated the method?

Halle Berry

According to Halle’s trainer Peter Lee Thomas, the actress intuitively adhered to a ketogenic diet, so she came to him for training already in a state of ketosis – the name of the metabolic process in which the body breaks down its own fat, releasing ketones . Looking at the flat stomach and toned abs of the “catwoman” at her 53 years old, you seriously think about revising your own diet in favor of something fatter.

Alicia Vikander

The Swedish actress knows firsthand what “mad drying” is: shortly before filming Tomb Raider: Lara Croft, the girl gained about 6 extra pounds. It was necessary to urgently draw the relief of the body and get into the required shape. Then Vikander tried the keto diet for the first time: she almost excluded carbohydrates from the diet, and began to get the required number of calories from avocados and coconut oil. You saw the result yourself!

Although, to be honest, fate gave me an incredible surprise. I thought that all these experiences were already in the past … I was already on the verge of menopause, and here is such news, ”Berry shared after she found out that she was pregnant for the second time.

When you say fats, do you think of lard and butter? In vain! Supporters of the keto diet claim that the menu can be refined and rich. So, actress Vanessa Hudgens comes up with such combinations as acai berries + coconut oil + blueberries. It turns out tasty and beneficial for the figure, Vanessa’s photo is proof of that.

Have you tried the keto diet?

Kourtney Kardashian

Representatives of the Kardashian clan are accustomed, if not to being trendsetters, then at least to pick up fashion trends. It is not surprising that one of the sisters of a large family became a follower of the popular Ketoration. For the best effect, Courtney strengthened the “diet” with fashionable intermittent fasting – the result was not long in coming!

Kim Kardashian

Kim also tried the keto diet, and the method again proved to be a great way to lose weight quickly and without harm to the body and psyche. During pregnancy, the diva gained 25 kilograms, which prevented her from feeling comfortable.
