From all sides, wonderful stories of getting rid of extra pounds, stories of a radical change in appearance and beautiful transformations have been raining down on us lately. TV, magazines, books, social networks poke us into everything beautiful that should motivate us to become better. Beautiful tanned bodies, amazing clothes, an entourage that promises heavenly pleasure until the end of time.

This is a good start, but it already looks like a mass psychosis.

However, the topic of getting rid of extra pounds is also relevant for cars. And with current gas prices and an ongoing passion for fast driving, weight reduction is really important. In addition, it is always easier to discuss not your own extra pounds, but others’, so let’s get on with it. Let’s talk about the new product from Audi.

Exterior

The previous generation Q7 felt too long. And also the roundness of the body, its individual elements and headlights, when viewed in profile, made it look like an inverted pistachio shell – a round top, a cut bottom. Well, a couple of wheels.

Now everything is different. Edges, corners, the silhouette is directed forward and promises not to be shy anywhere. No dissonance in proportions. The most important thing is that the car does not look like a big jeep, like an SUV with a chopped stern. It’s more like a station wagon, but Audi’s are angry and fast, which is worth, for example, the 560-horsepower Audi RS6 – this “barn” is gaining the first hundred in 3.9 seconds.

So the comparison with the station wagon can be flattering. As is the case with the Audi RS6 and Audi Q7. By the way, the latter “does a hundred” in 6.1 seconds.

As with all recent Audis, the fog lamps have moved into the main unit, leaving the nostrils that are at the bottom of the sides of the grille monolithic. The car began to look more brutal. Previously, for this quality, one had to turn to the 200th Kruzak, for example. Now everything is different – a peasant Audi is in the arena!

Viewed from the front, the Audi Q7 is somewhat reminiscent of the muzzle of a robot dog. The feeling that this time Audi hired artists who painted combat robots in the mecha style for Japanese anime cartoons. Each line is high-tech embodied in glass, plastic and metal.

Whatever one may say, the novelty from Audi looks harmonious. And the comparison with the half-brother Volkswagen Touareg is not a nitpick, but a compliment: we are used to the fact that an off-road vehicle with the letter V on the “muzzle” is an off-road angry comrade. By the way, from some angles it is difficult to distinguish these cars. But don’t worry, you won’t be able to confuse your Audi with someone else’s Tuareg – normal people don’t approach the car from such angles.

The mirrors have moved from the glazing to the door and have been given a vintage two-tone finish. A new place for mirrors has improved visibility, freeing up the corners of the side windows.

All body lines have become stricter and simpler, while their combinations, on the contrary, are more complex. The ribs on the doors are stamped so intricately that it’s hard to even realize it, but it plays beautifully in the sun! The antenna became even more reminiscent of a shark fin and remained in the same place as its predecessor.

The biggest success of the design team, in my opinion, was the lack of thoughts about tuning and styling when looking at the car. You look, and not a single convolution moves, offering matte wheels of a monstrous size or cunning optics with cilia and tinted headlights. Well done designers!

Decorative trims with Quattro lettering have been added to the doors. They are silver, “aluminum”. But it is not a pity to scratch.

The stern also seems to be carved from a very hard material, working with which, in principle, does not imply soft lines.

The only round elements on the exterior are the wheels and four rings front and rear.

Overhangs are not off-road, but coupled with air suspension and a lot of electronic assistants, there will be no problems when driving along a dirt road. The bottom of the car is flat, like Keira Knightley – nothing sticks out. Thanks to this, the chances of catching something on a rough road are close to zero.

Interior

Utilitarian chic – let’s describe the interior like this. And now we will analyze the interior of the off-road vehicle in detail.

Rigorous, comfortable and fanatically precise fitting of interior parts and controls to each other. The materials are quite consistent with the status and price of the car – aluminum, lacquered plastic or wood to choose from, leather and alcantara, soft plastic, different in texture and appearance.

What I have the utmost respect for Audi is its restraint: no flashes of all the colors of the rainbow, no riot of colors on the dashboard. Everything is grown-up. And fonts – even now in the Chamber of Weights and Measures, even Johnny Ive would envy.

A must for any car review is ergonomics. Ergonomics are excellent, there is nothing to complain about. The light in the cabin is turned on by touching the ceiling. Play fun.

What were you waiting for? There is nothing more to say, because this is Audi. Alpha and Omega, the Golden Section, I am – that’s all. The question is only the idea of ​​placing the slot for the electronic key exactly between the two cup holders. I wonder how soon this key will be filled with sticky hot coffee?

Four-spoke steering wheel, multifunctional, of course. It changes position with the help of electric adjustments for reach and tilt angle. But after several days of driving, the algorithm for automatically returning the steering wheel to its working position still remained a mystery. The fact is that after the ignition is turned off, the smart car pushes back and raises the steering wheel to make it easier to get out of the car, but after starting the engine, you had to torture the steering wheel position joystick again, returning it to its place. Well, the flight – for people of a standard set of adjustments, the position is enough, but if your height exceeds 190 cm, departure may not be enough.

If you only want to transport small children in this vehicle, I have good news for you. All passenger seats are equipped with ISOFIX mounts, and the hinges themselves are carefully covered with soft leather plugs. Access to the third row of seats (there were no such seats in the test car) is very simple and convenient, the second row simply folds and you can humanly enter the stern without showing miracles of flexibility and agility.

Ride and design features

The biggest success of the new Q7 is its weight. And the reduction in weight affects driving performance very much.

Compared to its predecessor, the new Audi has shed 325 kg, of which 71 kg of weight loss has come from the body. Its basis is a power frame made of ultra-high-strength hot-formed steel. And the front part, all doors, front fenders and hood are made of aluminum. Thus, the version with a gasoline engine weighs only 1970 kg, and with a diesel engine – 1995 kg. For a car of this size, the numbers are quite obscene.

Comparisons are indispensable, so keep it up.

A direct competitor, the Bavarian X5 in the 35i modification presses the ground with a force of 2070 kg, and the Mercedes-Benz ML 300 exceeds the two-ton mark even more confidently – its weight is 2155 kg. And finally: the new Q7 is heavier than the Toyota Camry by only 355 kg. Camry is a sedan, Q7 is a seven-seater SUV. Did you feel the greatness of the moment? Here is the same one.

By the way, Audi’s engines remained the same – the test car had a turbocharged gasoline V6 with a herd of 333 “horses”. As a result, we get more useful power per kilogram of weight, less tax on engine power and better handling. Also available in Russia is diesel about 249horsepower. Moreover, the choice of engine type, according to the Kemerovo dealer AS Kemerovo, does not affect the price of the car.

Noise isolation protects your ears when driving, for example, to listen to music from the speakers of the audio system. Choose from Audi sound system, Bose Sound System and Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound. However, when the revolutions exceed 3500, the engine reminds of its presence.

Aggressive driving on this Audi is like sledding towed to a big kind dog. In the good sense of the word. She, unlike the dog, has a fully controlled adaptive chassis. I will try to explain more clearly: not only the front wheels turn, but also the rear wheels. At low speeds – in the direction opposite to the front wheels, at high speeds – in the same direction as the front ones. As a result, the turning radius was reduced by a meter, and the stability in turns at speed increased. How much, it’s hard to say, but it should be more than enough.

Audi’s most fun acceleration is between 0 and 70 km/h. From 100-130 it also accelerates very confidently, but does not make you quack with delight.

The clutch is a differential for the poor. It is not as reliable as we would like, but it is not very expensive. Therefore, a huge number of inexpensive crossovers are equipped with it. But the Q7 aims for premium, so the power to the rear wheels is transmitted through the differential. There is no need for long explanations here – the differential is gut, period.

When you spur on a big SUV, you expect one of two things: either it moves, and after a couple of seconds the ride starts to feel like going down a mountain in a trolley without brakes, or it just doesn’t drive, and then there is no speed, no problems and no fun.

The Audi Q7 paints a very different picture. As you know, the sport mode in civilian cars resembles the acting contest “Who will portray sportiness more convincingly.” So – the Audi Q7 in this competition might not have taken first place, but this is not important. In the Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest, Chaplin himself did not win. With the biggest cuckoo, when sport presets are turned on, the connection between the motor and the gas pedal really becomes straighter and shorter. When the gas is off, Audi slows down the engine, when you touch the accelerator pedal, not only the speed jumps, but the whole car responds, noticeably leaning forward. During the day in dense city traffic, this will get boring quickly, but at night on the same, but noticeably empty streets, the car will give a lot of fun. In manual mode, you can switch by shifting the gearshift knob, paddle shifters, or even let the car do everything itself.

The most important feeling that a car gives during active driving is lightness. There are no strained rolls in corners at the start, it doesn’t seem that she is ripping off the asphalt with her wheels. It brakes the Q7 like a hatchback, that is, very easily. Sitting behind the wheel of a car of such dimensions, it is perceived even a little unnaturally, but very pleasant.

Toys

There are so many electronic bells and whistles and options in new cars entering the market that soon, when buying a car, a fifteen-year-old teenager will have to understand all these buttons and twists. Therefore, speaking about the new Audi Q7, we will pay special attention to gadgets and high technologies.

First, the already familiar MMI interface from Audi is in place. Optionally, you can buy an Audi virtual cockpit, and then instead of the dashboard you will have a display and various beautiful graphics, or a navigator map right behind the wheel. Gorgeous!

If you are a fan of simplicity, then the map and menu will be displayed on the right hand. Management of all this economy is carried out by the usual puck or buttons on the steering wheel.

But due to the fact that there are more settings and other “whistles-croaks” to help the driver, a touchpad has settled on the center console. It responds to pressing with vibration, supports multi-touch and is extremely convenient. Scrolling and zooming the map is a pleasure for them. But it seemed to me that its purpose was limited to this. All other settings are more conveniently controlled with a washer.

Speaking of settings, there are seven driving modes alone. Two off-road vehicles, one dynamic, comfortable, efficient (they avoided the poverty-smelling word “economical” – what tricks!), automatic and individual. In the latter, you can manually tune the engine, transmission and suspension.

When driving off-road, you can additionally raise the suspension, and the inclinometer will display the roll on the display so that when you roll over, you can get confirmation of this event from the car’s instruments.
