Lysine reviews. Lysine Supplement: Effectiveness, Benefits, and User Experiences
What are the main benefits of lysine supplements. How effective is lysine for treating cold sores and herpes outbreaks. What other health conditions can lysine potentially help with. What dosage of lysine is recommended for different uses. How satisfied are users with lysine supplements overall.
Understanding Lysine: An Essential Amino Acid
Lysine is an essential amino acid that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions. Our bodies cannot produce lysine on their own, so we must obtain it through diet or supplementation. Lysine is found naturally in protein-rich foods like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products. However, many people choose to take lysine supplements for specific health benefits.
Lysine for Cold Sores and Herpes Outbreaks
One of the most common uses of lysine supplements is for managing cold sores and herpes outbreaks. Many users report significant benefits in this area:
- Reduces frequency of outbreaks
- Shortens duration of cold sores
- Alleviates severity of symptoms
One user shared: “I began using Lysine 5 years ago due to a bad outbreak of cold sores. I had suffered cold sores all my life several times a year, but this was one of my worst outbreaks. The next day after using lysine ointment and taking the supplement, it had cut the healing time dramatically.”
How does lysine help with cold sores?
Lysine is believed to work by interfering with the replication of the herpes simplex virus, which causes cold sores. It may also help counteract the effects of arginine, another amino acid that can promote the growth of the herpes virus.
Recommended Dosage for Cold Sore Prevention
For preventing cold sore outbreaks, many users find success with a daily dose of 1000 mg of lysine. One reviewer noted: “1000 mg is the correct daily dose for most people according to body weight. More than 1000 mg daily should be taken only if necessary and for a short time.”
It’s important to note that individual needs may vary. Some users report taking up to 4000-5000 mg per day for more severe cases or during active outbreaks. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.
Lysine’s Potential Benefits for Other Health Conditions
While lysine is primarily known for its effects on cold sores and herpes outbreaks, users have reported benefits for various other health conditions:
Anxiety and PTSD
One user shared: “L-lysine (500mg/day) has helped me immensely with symptoms of anxiety and PTSD. It has helped me feel more upbeat and outgoing and social and has also given me more of a sense of physical well-being.”
Depression
Another user reported: “I believe this helps for depression. I have been taking this supplement for at least 20 years and have noticed mood elevation when I do take 4-5 thousand milligrams a day.”
Acne and Skin Infections
Some users have found lysine helpful for managing skin conditions: “For topical infections/acne, it has been extremely helpful. Chronic acne and infection from diabetes weakened immune system, and now it’s more like a few normal pimples instead of big throbbing painful oozing things.”
Sleep Improvement
A concise but powerful testimony from one user simply stated: “I can sleep!”
Canker Sores and IBS
An interesting account from a long-term user: “I started taking a daily dose of L-Lysine for canker sores at the suggestion of a friend. I was getting them frequently. The doctors said they were caused by stress. I also had IBS, which my doctor said was also caused by stress. I have not had a canker sore or IBS since the 90’s. I take 1000 mg of L-Lysine every morning with breakfast.”
Lysine and Dietary Considerations
When using lysine supplements, it’s important to consider your overall diet. Some users have found success in managing their lysine to arginine ratio:
“To prevent cold sore outbreaks, arginine should never be consumed in excess to lysine. Cutting seeds, nuts, chocolate, etc. also helps because they have a lot of arginine. So l-lysine supplement helps to balance daily intake.”
This dietary approach can be particularly helpful for those prone to cold sores or herpes outbreaks. By reducing arginine-rich foods and supplementing with lysine, many users report fewer outbreaks.
User Satisfaction and Overall Effectiveness
Based on the reviews analyzed, the overall satisfaction with lysine supplements appears to be quite high. Many users report significant improvements in their conditions, particularly for cold sores and herpes outbreaks.
The effectiveness of lysine seems to vary depending on the condition being treated. For cold sores, many users report dramatic improvements, with some stating that outbreaks are completely prevented when they take lysine regularly.
For other conditions like anxiety, depression, and skin issues, the results appear more varied but still largely positive. It’s important to note that individual experiences can differ, and what works for one person may not work for another.
How quickly does lysine work?
The speed of lysine’s effects can vary depending on the condition and individual. For cold sores, many users report seeing results within a day or two of starting supplementation. One user noted: “I START TAKING THIS AS SOON AS I FEEL THE TINGLE OF A COLD SORE 9 OUT OF 10 TIMES IT NEVER FULLY DEVELOPS.”
For other conditions like mood disorders or skin issues, the effects may take longer to become noticeable. Some users report improvements after several weeks of consistent use.
Potential Side Effects and Precautions
While lysine is generally considered safe for most people, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects and take necessary precautions:
- Gastrointestinal discomfort: Some users may experience nausea, stomach pain, or diarrhea, especially at higher doses.
- Interactions with medications: Lysine may interact with certain medications, particularly those used to treat osteoporosis.
- Kidney concerns: People with kidney disease should consult their doctor before taking lysine supplements, as high doses may affect kidney function.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There isn’t enough reliable information about the safety of lysine supplements during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. It’s best to consult with a healthcare provider in these situations.
It’s always advisable to speak with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions or are taking other medications.
Lysine Supplementation: Forms and Administration
Lysine supplements are available in various forms, each with its own advantages:
Oral Supplements
The most common form of lysine supplementation is oral tablets or capsules. These are easy to take and allow for precise dosing. Most users find them convenient for daily use.
Topical Ointments
For cold sores and other skin conditions, lysine is also available in topical form. One user mentioned: “My pharmacist recommended L-Lysine ointment and told me others had said that taking the supplement reduced the outbreaks so I decided to try that too.”
Powder Form
Some users prefer lysine in powder form, which can be mixed into drinks or food. This can be particularly useful for those who have difficulty swallowing pills or prefer to adjust their dosage more precisely.
How to take lysine supplements effectively?
For optimal absorption and effectiveness, consider these tips:
- Take lysine on an empty stomach, preferably between meals.
- If you experience stomach discomfort, try taking it with a small amount of food.
- For cold sore prevention, take lysine consistently every day.
- For acute outbreaks, some users find success with higher doses for a short period.
- Always follow the dosage instructions on the product label or as advised by your healthcare provider.
Comparing Lysine to Other Treatments
While lysine has shown effectiveness for many users, it’s important to consider how it compares to other treatments, particularly for cold sores and herpes outbreaks:
Lysine vs. Antiviral Medications
Prescription antiviral medications like acyclovir or valacyclovir are often considered the gold standard for treating herpes outbreaks. However, many users prefer lysine as a natural alternative, especially for prevention and mild cases.
One user shared: “I had tried everything else to heal them, my pharmacist recommended L-Lysine ointment and told me others had said that taking the supplement reduced the outbreaks so I decided to try that too.”
Lysine vs. Other Natural Remedies
Compared to other natural remedies like lemon balm or propolis, lysine appears to have more scientific backing and user testimonials supporting its effectiveness for cold sores. However, some users find a combination of natural remedies most effective.
Is lysine more effective than other supplements for cold sores?
While individual experiences vary, many users report that lysine is more effective than other supplements they’ve tried for managing cold sores. The combination of its antiviral properties and its role in counteracting arginine makes it a popular choice among those prone to outbreaks.
Long-Term Use of Lysine Supplements
Many users report taking lysine supplements for extended periods without significant issues. One user shared: “I have been taking this supplement for at least 20 years and have noticed mood elevation when I do take 4-5 thousand milligrams a day.”
However, it’s important to note that long-term effects of high-dose lysine supplementation are not well-studied. Some health professionals recommend cycling on and off lysine supplements or adjusting dosage based on need.
Can you develop tolerance to lysine supplements?
There is no strong evidence to suggest that users develop tolerance to lysine supplements over time. Many long-term users report continued benefits without needing to increase their dosage. However, as with any supplement, individual responses may vary, and it’s always best to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
Lysine and Immune Function
While lysine is primarily known for its effects on herpes viruses, some users and researchers suggest it may have broader immune-boosting properties:
- Supports production of antibodies
- May enhance the body’s ability to fight off various infections
- Could potentially help with recovery from illnesses
One user reported: “I also got shingles and used it for that too. I hardly got any shingles sores after I started taking it.”
How does lysine support overall immune health?
Lysine plays a role in the production of immune cells and antibodies. It’s also involved in the formation of collagen, which is important for skin health and wound healing. By supporting these functions, lysine may contribute to overall immune system strength and resilience.
Lysine and Stress Management
Several users have reported benefits related to stress management when taking lysine supplements. This could be due to lysine’s role in neurotransmitter function and its potential impact on cortisol levels.
One user noted: “The doctors said they [canker sores] were caused by stress. I also had IBS, which my doctor said was also caused by stress. I have not had a canker sore or IBS since the 90’s [after starting lysine supplementation].”
Can lysine help reduce stress-related symptoms?
While more research is needed, some users report that lysine supplementation helps them manage stress-related symptoms. This could be due to its potential effects on neurotransmitter balance and its role in supporting overall physical health. However, it’s important to note that lysine should not be considered a standalone treatment for stress or anxiety disorders.
Lysine and Athletic Performance
Some athletes and fitness enthusiasts use lysine supplements as part of their nutrition regimen. Potential benefits for athletic performance include:
- Support for muscle protein synthesis
- Potential improvement in recovery times
- Contribution to overall energy production
How can lysine potentially benefit athletes?
Lysine is involved in the production of carnitine, a compound that plays a crucial role in energy metabolism. It also contributes to collagen formation, which is important for joint and connective tissue health. These properties make lysine potentially beneficial for athletes, particularly those engaged in high-intensity or endurance activities.
While specific studies on lysine and athletic performance are limited, some users report improved recovery and overall physical well-being when incorporating lysine into their supplement routine.
Lysine and Calcium Absorption
Lysine plays a role in calcium absorption and retention in the body. This has potential implications for bone health, particularly for individuals at risk of osteoporosis or other bone-related conditions.
How does lysine affect calcium metabolism?
Lysine helps enhance intestinal calcium absorption and reduces urinary calcium excretion. This dual action may contribute to improved calcium balance in the body, potentially supporting bone health. However, it’s important to note that lysine supplementation should not replace other bone health measures like adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, regular exercise, and medical treatments when necessary.
Potential Interactions and Contraindications
While lysine is generally considered safe for most people, there are some potential interactions and contraindications to be aware of:
- Aminoglycoside antibiotics: Lysine may increase the risk of side effects from these antibiotics.
- Calcium supplements: High doses of lysine may increase calcium absorption, potentially leading to excessive calcium levels in some individuals.
- Arginine: Lysine and arginine compete for absorption, so high doses of one may affect the effectiveness of the other.
Who should avoid taking lysine supplements?
Individuals with the following conditions or situations should consult their healthcare provider before taking lysine supplements:
- Kidney disease or impaired kidney function
- Liver disease
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Those taking medications that interact with lysine
- Individuals with a history of adverse reactions to amino acid supplements
As always, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions or are taking other medications.

As preventive to cold sores. Controling lysine and arginine rich food intake also helps. To prevent cold sore outbreaks arginine should never be consumed in excess to lysine. Cutting seeds, nuts, chocolate, etc. also helps because they have a lot of arginine. So l-lysine suplement helps to balance daily intake. 1000 mg is the correct daily dose for most people according to body weight. More than 1000 mg daily should be taken only if necessary and for little time.

I dealt with horrible cold sores for many years on my lower lip. Some were very inflamed, painful and puffed up. This was extremely embarrassing when around coworkers especially after the TIME magazine article titled “The New Scarlett Letter” published in 1982. No longer was it a simple cold sore since it became an STD called Herpes. This was the center of conversation on the late night TV shows. My dentist gave me a prescription for Denavir (Penciclovir Cream) which worked extremely well but at a cost of about $50 for a 2g tube (about 1 tsp). Denavir did not decrease the incidence but it did lessen the severity IF I applied it at the first tingling sensation. I have since discovered the L-Lysine treatment and I have not had a serious outbreak for the past five years. At the most I have one or two possible outbreak per year. I call them possible because taking Lysine 1000 mg 3 times a day for three days prevents it from developing fully so it could have been just a cracked dry lip.Read More Read Less

I am 49 y/o and I have had cold sore outbreaks ever since my beloved mother gave me a kiss on the mouth when she had a cold sore outbreak when I was 16 years old. Three weeks later I got my first cold sore and I’ve had them every winter ever since. Winter 2015 I finally figured out that my outbreaks were due to the cold snaps we get living in Florida. I realized that when it starts to get cold (below 50°) my lips will start to feel like a prune and NO amount of lip moisturizing helps. I finally realized it was the cold snaps that was changing my pH balance and breaking me out in cold sores . It took me till I was literally this age of 49 to figure this out . I just figured cold Soares was something I would have to live through every winter which I have until 2015. During the summer when I never have outbreaks because my lips are moist I started taking small doses of lysing (500 mg) and also for the first time started taking biotin for “hair skin and nails” (one maximum dosage daily tablet 10k mcg). I took these two over-the-counter medicines religiously every day starting September 2016… Just before the cold season hit . I do not take them during the spring and summer because I don’t breakout. Whenever the cold snaps DID occur I IMMEDIATELY UP my l-lysine to 3x a day … Usually blended into my smoothies so I couldn’t taste it at all… 1000 mg (yup!) each serving… morning noon night . Sometimes I even did it four times a day. (I got this 3k – 4k MG dosage idea from a holistic website). When the cold snap ended I DROPPED the dosage of l-lysine (any brand you want) to normal 500 mg. Also Biotene is taken every day year-round with my regular vitamin supplements . If I felt like it during a cold snap I might take biotin morning and night with my l-lysine smoothie 🙂 Lip moisturizers don’t keep you from breaking out. This is my second year and I have had ZERO outbreaks it’s awesome. Finally!!!!! L lysine and biotin. Read More Read Less

I use super lysine+ for many years. I only take when I feel the start of a ocld sore. I take 3 pils 3x day. Often it never erupts, but even if it does, it doesn’t last nearly as long as if I don’t take. If I don’t take till after eruption it seriously decreases the eruption time and severity. I don’t take when no issues. I’ve recommended to friends, and they have also had similar results.

When I have a breakout I used up 3000mg a day until no longer active meaning no more itching. I also use the Super Lysine ointment which works well. Best Brand is Quantum all others have too many other ingredients and don’t work. I avoid breakouts I should take 500mg/day but tend to forget.

I have been using NOW Foods Double Strength L-Lysine for several months to help manage the symptoms of the Epstein-Barr virus, and I am very pleased with the results. L-Lysine is an essential amino acid that has been shown to have antiviral properties, and it can be particularly helpful for those with viral infections like Epstein-Barr. I appreciate that this supplement is double strength, meaning that each capsule contains 1,000 mg of L-Lysine, which has allowed me to take fewer capsules per day. I have noticed a significant reduction in the frequency and severity of my symptoms since starting this supplement, and I feel that it has played a key role in supporting my immune system and overall health. NOW Foods is a brand that I trust for high-quality, effective supplements, and I appreciate that their L-Lysine is free from common allergens and additives. Overall, I would highly recommend NOW Foods Double Strength L-Lysine to anyone looking for a natural way to support their immune system and manage symptoms of viral infections like Epstein-Barr.

A friend recommended it & since I have taken it I haven’t had so many colds. I take it first thing in the morning. My immune system was very sensitive to cold and flu and u have seen a notable decrease in getting sick. Surrounded by people with colds and even covid. 1 tablet 1000mg, great size 250 tablets have plenty of stock. I love the NOW brand, big bottel, package is easy reading, easy to swollow albeit big. Slow release, no taste. I am very happy with L-Lysine and recommend it. I have a friend that the moment she stop using it, she breaks out in fever blisters. Made such a difference in my life.

I am about halfway through the bottle. I take it when I am sick, super tired, or had a lot of alcohol to drink. The size is larger and comes with a good bit, so it’s good amount for the price you pay. The pills are a bit on the larger size. It’s made up of just lysine, which is good to take if you had too much arginine.

I use to suffer from cold sores. And if you have ever gotten them, you know how painful and embarrassing they can be, and they take so long to heal. Lysine is one of the essential amino acids, which are those that the body cannot make and that people need to obtain from dietary sources. Lysine is present in many different foods. The primary sources are animal products, such as meat and dairy products. Lysine also enhances the production of collagen and elastin of the skin thus improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and keeping the skin firm and elastic, giving it a more youthful appearance. After taking Lysine for 2 months, I notice my facial skin is smoother with tighter pores, more even-toned and slightly plumper. I do combine lysine with collagen and HA for more potent result. L-lysine also strengthen my immune system thus i have less chance of getting a bad flu. You can read more about the Benefits of L-Lysine from Medical Medium blog.

The next indispensable amino acid that is needed to build the entire chain of vitamins is Lizin.
Lizin is important for maintaining immunity because it is involved in the development of antibodies.
And with vitamin C, this is a workout of collagen!!!
This is chic skin, nails and hair 🤩
The quality of this product corresponds to the price. The size of the capsules is not large.

Lysine is ideal for the treatment of various viruses, especially effective for Herpes. A powerful drug that cleanses the body, providing a wide range of actions – antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, while not having a harmful effect on the microflora. Cleanses the body of all kinds of viruses. This drug will help when antibiotics do not work due to addiction to them. Decent BAD!
Most Helpful Critical Review
The essential amino acid lysine contained in the supplement is essential for maintaining an active immune system, which is especially important in chronic infections such as herpes. Also, lysine is useful for improving the condition of the skin, prolonging its youth due to the production of collagen. The package contains 100 tab. Daily dose 1 piece. The only downside is that the pill is huge and very hard to swallow. Tablets are best taken with food and plenty of fluids. If this is not a problem for you, I recommend buying it. If my review was useful to you, please like it.

Synthesis of collagen, which helps to avoid wrinkles;
Decreased cholesterol levels;
Improved absorption of calcium.
Lysine is an essential amino acid that cannot be synthesized by the body and can only be obtained from food and supplements.
Bought for hair loss. The size of the tablet is quite large, for someone it can cause inconvenience. After reading about the benefits in many aspects, I decided to include in the diet on an ongoing basis. Taste neutral

In addition, L-lysine is also known for its effects on skin and lip health. It helps in speeding up the healing of wounds and ulcers associated with certain viruses such as herpes. I noticed that taking the pills helped to reduce the manifestations of cold sores and shortened their duration.

Lysine is said to be specifically against herpes, but it also helps against other viruses – if a runny nose starts, for example, take lysine, zinc and monolaurin and that’s it, the runny nose will stop altogether. From my own experience. Price and quality in a good ratio.

I take these vitamins every fall cold season when cold sores start to come out without stopping. According to my observations, lysine should be drunk for a long time, three to four months. Then it will be possible to forget about herpes for a long time. Lysine from this manufacturer is quite a working additive. The volume is good and the dosage is large. For long-term use of such a jar, it is enough if taken according to the manufacturer’s recommendation, 1 capsule per day. Also, this amino acid is useful for the skin and for the nervous system. Tablets do not have a specific taste.

I bought Lysine because I had herpes (not on my lips). I drank the package for a month, there is definitely a benefit, for all the time there has never been a relapse. As a bonus, I have more energy even though I’m currently on a diet. The size of the tablets is certainly not small, but it is easy to swallow. If there is a result, we can say that the quality is good, and I have achieved what I bought this supplement for.

Lysine is an essential amino acid that is often recommended for herpes infections and will be helpful for those who have frequent lip rashes during colds. I often use dietary supplements of this brand, the quality has not failed yet. The price is low, the packaging is convenient. I would like it to be made of glass, but you always have to overpay for glass. Tablets do not have a specific taste.

L-lysine tablet tastes neutral. An effective supplement with a high content of L-lysine. In short lines and for a long time it helps to get rid of herpes, but to achieve the effect it is better to remove arginine from the diet. There were no side effects.

BAA “L-Lysine monohydrochloride” (Nutricare, Argo)
L-Lysine is an essential amino acid necessary for growth and helps maintain nitrogen balance in the body. It is not synthesized by the body and can only be obtained through supplements and food. At the end of the 20th century, scientists managed to discover the properties of L-lysine, which allow this amino acid to actively fight viruses that cause herpes of various forms and acute respiratory infections. Long-term and regular use of L-lysine has an antidepressant effect. The use of lysine is recommended for people suffering from migraines, consuming low-calorie and low-protein foods.
Main properties of L-Lysine:
- increases muscle strength and endurance;
- contributes to the increase in muscle volume during training;
- improves short-term memory;
- prevents the development of atherosclerosis;
- prevents the development of osteoporosis;
- prevents relapses of herpes;
- improves erection; increases female libido;
- improves hair structure.
Lysine is an essential amino acid that is found in almost all proteins, it is found in meat, fish, potatoes, yeast and eggs and acts as a building material for all proteins, promotes the growth and restoration of collagen, is involved in the production of antibodies, hormones and enzymes. The lack of lysine adversely affects the synthesis of proteins, which leads to increased fatigue, poor appetite, weight loss, irritability, visual impairment, baldness, decreased libido and potency. With a deficiency in the body of lysine, the growth rate of children slows down, and early gray hair appears in adults.
Action: stimulating, rejuvenating, antiviral, regenerating, antidepressant, tonic.
Lysine stimulates the immune system, makes a person more resistant to diseases and helps to cope with already existing diseases, has an effective antiviral effect in herpes and acute respiratory infections, which makes it indispensable in immunodeficiency states. The mechanism of the antiherpetic action of lysine is interesting: after entering the body, herpes viruses begin to multiply, the main building material for building new viruses is the amino acid arginine, similar in structure to L-lysine. With the introduction of L-lysine into the body, the “deceived” herpes viruses begin to use it instead of Arginine, the newly formed viruses die and reproduction stops.
L-lysine improves the secretion of important hormones of a protein nature – hormones of the thyroid gland, pancreas, pituitary gland, stimulates the active synthesis of growth hormone, accelerates the process of splitting fats and promotes weight loss. Athletes use L-lysine to build muscle mass, to recover from sports injuries, as well as for fatigue and overtraining.
Lysine has been proven to have a mild antidepressant effect, stimulate mental performance, increase energy potential, relieve migraine headaches, increase libido and stabilize erectile function in men. Lysine reduces low-density cholesterol, is a precursor to the amino acid carnitine, essential for heart health, and maintains cardiovascular health in coronary heart disease and diabetes, it also improves the absorption of calcium from the blood and its transport to bone tissue, therefore it is successfully used for prevention. and treatment of osteoporosis. Lysine also improves vision, prevents cataracts and other degenerative processes in eye tissues.
Indications:
- Immunodeficiency conditions (viral and infectious diseases, hepatitis, herpes types 1 and 2),
- Cardiovascular diseases (ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis),
- Nervous disorders (depression, anxiety, neurosis, frequent stress),
- Prevention of premature aging (osteoporosis, baldness, cataracts, decreased libido and potency, recovery from diseases),
- Endocrine disorders (diabetes mellitus, prediabetes, hypothyroidism, obesity),
