Epididymitis is often an acute condition, but there are some cases where it becomes a chronic problem.

The condition affects the epididymis, a tube that runs from the testicle to other areas of the male reproductive system.

In men with epididymitis, the epididymis becomes swollen.

This inflammation can cause several side effects and symptoms.

It can also have an impact on other functions of the reproductive system.

There are several potential causes behind epididymitis, including the transmission of certain microorganisms during sexual intercourse.

However, the cause is not always easy to find in chronic conditions.

Treatment options are available but depend on finding a cause behind the epididymitis.

In this article, we look closely at epididymitis, the potential causes, and whether ejaculating may hurt the condition.

What is epididymitis?

To understand the physiological factors of epididymitis, it is important to also have a good view of the role that the epididymis plays.

The epididymis is a small tubular structure that is also described as a convoluted duct. It sits behind the testicles and connects to the vas deferens.

Sperm is produced in the testicles. Once produced, the testicles secrete the sperm into the epididymis, which then transports the sperm toward the vas deferens. From here, the sperm can then move toward the prostate, where it combines with certain fluids.

When a man develops epididymitis, it means the epididymis tube experiences inflammation. The inflammation can cause certain symptoms to develop, depending on the severity of the condition.

A few important symptoms that men should be aware of include:

  • A warm feeling in the scrotum. There may also be some visible redness on the outside of the scrotum.
  • Some men experience pain symptoms in the scrotum as well.
  • Pain during urination may also be a sign of epididymitis. It is also possible for some men to experience an increase in the frequency of urination.
  • Some men have found blood in their semen when they have this condition.
  • Pain symptoms can sometimes develop in the pelvic area. There are also cases where the pain affects the lower stomach region.

What causes epididymitis to flare up?

Epididymitis can be acute or chronic. In acute cases, the symptoms generally only last for a short period until appropriate treatment is implemented. If a man has a recurrence of the symptoms, then they may have chronic epididymitis instead (1).

There is little conclusive evidence on the specific reasons why people with chronic epididymitis may experience a regular flare-up of their symptoms.

Research has suggested several potential reasons for the condition to develop initially. In cases of acute epididymitis, the condition is usually related to an infection. Both viruses and bacteria can cause infection in the epididymis.

There is also a higher risk of recurrent or worse symptoms in patients who do not start with an appropriate treatment program early on.

Overall causes behind a flareup of epididymitis and its related symptoms include:

  • Chlamydia and gonorrhea, which are both types of sexually transmittable infections.
  • Urinary tract or prostate infections that spread toward the epididymis.
  • Trauma directly to the region.
  • Cases where urine flows back into the patient’s epididymis instead of out the urethra.

Does ejaculating hurt epididymitis?

During ejaculation, semen needs to move through the epididymis toward the urethra in order to be secreted. When a patient has epididymitis, it is sometimes possible to experience symptoms when they ejaculate. This is primarily due to the presence of inflammation in the epididymis.

Certain research papers have looked at whether or not ejaculation might be a cause behind a flare-up of pain symptoms associated with epididymitis.

In one study, researchers suggest that several types of activities can worsen the symptoms that the patient experiences (1). One of the activities that the paper lists include ejaculation.

Furthermore, whether ejaculation hurts epididymitis also largely depends on the severity of the patient’s condition. Those who are more prone to a flare-up and experience the symptoms at greater intensities are generally more likely to find that ejaculating causes the pain to come back.

Should you abstain from sex or masturbation with epididymitis?

Men are often unsure if it is appropriate to continue having sexual intercourse when diagnosed with epididymitis.

The good news is that masturbation or sexual intercourse that leads to ejaculation is not likely to cause a worsening of an infection that causes epididymitis. Thus, it is generally safe for the man to ejaculate.

There are, however, some things to keep in mind. The healthcare provider may recommend abstaining from sexual intercourse but tell the patient that it is appropriate to masturbate while being treated.

Men should also consider that ejaculation can sometimes increase the intensity of the pain they experience if they have a current case of epididymitis.

Can a man pass epididymitis to his partner?

There are numerous causes behind epididymitis, so it is important to understand whether it is a condition that a man can transfer to a partner during sexual intercourse. Whether it is possible to pass epididymitis to a partner depends on the condition’s cause.

There are certain situations where the man develops epididymitis after certain sexually transmittable infections. The two most common that are associated with epididymitis include gonorrhea and chlamydia.

If the man is diagnosed with either of these STIs when he has epididymitis, then it is possible to pass the viruses or bacteria on to the sexual partner.

Epididymitis recovery tips

Prevention is an important factor when it comes to epididymitis. Common reasons men develop the condition relate to the transmission of viruses and bacteria that causes sexually transmitted infection.

Protection during sexual intercourse can provide an effective preventative method against the spreading of these microorganisms.

In cases where a man is diagnosed with epididymitis, the outlook, recovery process, and treatment procedure depend on the cause.

Antibiotics are commonly prescribed to patients with epididymitis caused by a bacterial infection. The same treatment is good if the patient has epididymo-orchitis, which is where the bacteria infect the epididymis and the testicles at the same time.

For recovery, individuals can also place an ice pack on the scrotum. This can help to provide some relief for the pain symptoms they experience. It has also been found that certain medications can help in the management of epididymitis symptoms, which is especially useful in chronic cases.

It is also important to avoid lifting heavy objects while recovering from the condition. Athletic supporters are also good options for people who experience symptoms throughout the day.

Studies also suggest (2)  that the use of analgesics can assist in reducing the amount of pain the patient experiences when they are recovering from epididymitis.

Conclusion

Epididymitis is a condition that affects the reproductive system. It can result in painful symptoms, as well as tenderness in the area.

During ejaculation, it is sometimes possible for epididymitis to cause a flare-up of the symptoms that a man experiences.

While it is not necessary to abstain from sexual intercourse, it is important to understand what treatment options are available. Appropriate treatment may reduce the soreness during ejaculation. In chronic epididymitis, there are also management strategies that may assist in reducing the frequency of flare-ups.

i had been battling epididymitis for two months.  It was acute and almost certainly bacteria related initially.  I masterbated very occasionally during initial weeks on better days and had no noticeable positive or negative effects. Had not mastrbated in a month and around day 60 decided to after a very good week of recovery. My experience was that it caused many of my symptoms to come back after they had been very minimal for almost a week.

This is just my experience.  Maybe my symptoms would have been back anyways and it was just the timing.  I had  read both sides of the case which is why I made a decision to try.  I guess both because it may be helpful and to gauge my recovery.   And just generally anxious to feel recovered.

The night following, hours later, was particularly bad.  And oddly enough, not so much in the testicle/epididymis, but throughout the lower abdomen.  It has been 5 days since and none have been very good.  This is disheartening considering the days leading up to that decision were particularly good.

It makes me wonder though, if the initial pain following the recent master action  (really more horrible nauseating discomfort) was in my abdomen then perhaps it was residual bacteria being released.  And even though I am still suffering more now as a result it will somehow accelerate my recovery.

That said, I am still more convinced that the infection has run its course for the most part and I am recovering more (or completely) from the damage it did.  I, especially now, feel like I am prolonging the recovery of my epididymis by masterbating at all.  I will not be masterbating until I am completely recovered unless someone can convince me otherwise from experience or research.

Thanks all for sharing.

Hello,
You can masturbate but overmasturbation should be avoided. Continue taking the antibiotics but if the symptoms persist then other causes need to be evaluated. These include antibiotics and ant-inflammatory agents; phytotherapy, anxiolytics, narcotic analgesics, acupuncture and injection therapy.

I hope it helps. Take care and regards.

I’m not a physician.   When I suffered from epididymitis, my urologists did say that I can continue with masturbation.    I masturbated once every week to clear the load.   Some doctors say it is good in one way, saying the epididymis is a thin coiled tube and ejaculation prevents any blockage due to scars caused by epididimitis.     Check with your doctor, he may say once in a week is reasonable, but don’t too much and hurt yourself.

The recovery time for epdidiymitis is very slow.  It depends on how well your body is responding to the antibiotics.   For some people it will heal in weeks to months to years..
My healing time is 6 months..

What is epididymitis

Among the inflammatory processes of the scrotum, the disease occurs most often and is characterized by inflammation of the epididymis. Pathology occurs in young people and adult men.

Types and causes of occurrence

The main factors in the development of inflammation of the epididymis is infection with complications after tuberculosis, venereal diseases. A little less often, epididymitis develops against the background of congestion due to erections without sexual intercourse, masturbation, blood filling of the scrotum during interrupted sexual intercourse.
The pathogen penetrates through the lymph or blood, through the vas deferens or urethra, and can affect one or both testicles at once. Basically, the pathology spreads on the left side.

Symptoms

Distinctive features of epididymitis of the epididymis are:

  • pain in the groin of a pulling character. It radiates to the abdomen and lower back with slight exertion and increases sharply with ejaculation, urination,
  • testicle slightly swollen,
  • there is an admixture of blood in the urine and semen,
  • there are complaints of premature ejaculation.

The clinical picture is complemented by signs of intoxication, while the density of the testis remains the same.
Chronic epididymitis looks the same, but the signs are less pronounced.

Which doctor treats epididymitis

If you suspect inflammation of the epididymis, you should contact a urologist.
You can sign up for the treatment of epididymitis at any time on your own on the website or by phone. The administrator will name the next free date and time when the urologist will be ready to receive. Since the clinic in Kuntsevo is open from 8 am to 10 pm, there are no problems with the appointment.

Methods of treatment

First of all, the doctor is based on the results of tests and examinations. If purulent foci in the appendage are not found, then conservative therapy is preferred. The course of antibiotics, antispasmodics, anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics and vitamins is selected individually, based on a blood test. At the time of therapy, the urologist issues a sick leave so that the man observes bed rest.
Surgical intervention is prescribed in the most extreme case, when chronic inflammation or suppuration is diagnosed.

Results

If no suppuration is detected on ultrasound, then the mild and medium stages of inflammation are eliminated quickly. After a few days, the patient’s well-being improves, and after 2 weeks, the signs of epididymitis completely disappear.

Rehabilitation and restoration of lifestyle

After the course of treatment, the patient needs to make adjustments to his usual lifestyle. For example, it is necessary to abandon coitus interruptus and masturbation to eliminate the risk of congestive processes. You can not supercool and go to the steam room.
It is worth noting that any infectious disease can serve as an impetus for a relapse, so it is important to seek medical help from a doctor in a timely manner.

Why treat epididymitis with us

is it possible to have sex is it worth giving up in case of inflammation of the testicles, onanism and masturbation

  2. Treatment of epididymitis
  3. Is it possible to have sex with epididymitis

9000 6 Epididymitis is an inflammation of an infectious or non-infectious nature. of its origin, affecting the epididymis.

Epididymitis

Men who have been diagnosed with this can ask their doctor if they can have sex with epididymitis, what treatment is indicated in this case and what symptoms distinguish it from other diseases.
Taking into account the causes that provoke pathology, epididymitis is of the following types:

Infectious , when inflammation of the epididymis occurs due to pathogenic microflora that enters it from the urethra or from the bladder through the seminal ducts.

Traumatic , develops due to a previous injury to the pelvic organs. This can be not only a blow, but also traumatic medical examinations and procedures, squeezing, or other external impact on the genitals and systems.

A secondary form of pathology that develops as a complication or consequence of other diseases affecting the genitourinary system of the opposite sex. In this case, epididymitis is a complication rather than an independent disease.

Epididymitis

According to its course, medical specialists divide in practice acute epididymitis and its chronic form. At the initial stages, doctors diagnose an acute form of pathology, which can last, depending on the cause of the inflammatory process, from 1 to 6 months. But in the absence of therapy, it goes into a chronic course – this is a severe form of the disease, the treatment of which will be very long, using radical methods, up to surgery.

Causes of the disease

Before giving up sex when diagnosed with epididymitis, it is worth finding out the cause of the disease. It depends on the cause whether it is possible to have sex or whether a complete renunciation of sexual relations is necessary, as well as whether masturbation is permissible in this disease.

Specialists identify infectious and non-infectious causes that provoke epididymitis. So, in the group of infectious root causes that provoke a pathological inflammatory process, doctors include:

  • diseases transmitted from partner to partner through sexual contact;
  • as a complication after urethritis and prostate adenoma, vesiculitis or mumps.

Regarding non-infectious underlying causes that provoke the development of the disease, doctors include:

  • excessive exercise and sexual excess, such as excessive masturbation in adolescence;
  • hypothermia of the body and the negative impact of chemicals, medicines and certain diseases that provoke stagnation of urine and a violation of its outflow.
  • Epididymitis can develop at any age. It is a complication of influenza, pneumonia.

    If a man is diagnosed with chronic epididymitis, then intimate life will not affect the disease. When the disease is caused by a sexually transmitted infection, a man must use condoms during sexual intercourse.

    Many men refuse to lead a sexual life, because during the course of epididymitis, an inflammatory process occurs in the body, manifesting itself as not the most pleasant symptoms:

    • Constant cutting pains localized at the site of inflammation. In the initial stages, pain can disturb a man in the lower abdomen, radiating to the back, gradually moving into the scrotum.
    • Pain in the testicles themselves, aggravated by going to the toilet or by sexual intercourse.
    • Swelling of the scrotum itself, which has symmetrical or asymmetric changes in size and volume.
    • Discomfort when going to the toilet and urinating, accompanied by pain and burning, as well as the appearance of blood and mucus in the urine and semen, purulent inclusions, which, in turn, is definitely the cause of inflammation.
    • The inflammatory process is often accompanied by general intoxication of the body, which manifests itself as general weakness, loss of appetite and muscle pain, as well as aching joints.

    In acute form of epididymitis, the medical specialist prescribes bed rest and complete sexual rest.
    In the chronic course of the disease, sexual life does not affect the process and its outcome. In the case when epididymitis is caused by a sexually transmitted infection, a condom should be used during sexual intercourse until the results of all studies indicating the effectiveness of the therapy are obtained. But masturbating with epididymitis is not prohibited.

    Treatment of epididymitis

    The whole course of treatment of epididymitis is a set of measures aimed at eliminating the inflammatory process and restoring the sexual function of a man. Medical specialists use the following treatment regimens for epididymitis:

    A course of drug treatment. In this case, in the fight against the inflammatory process, doctors use broad-spectrum antibiotics, taking into account the causative agent of the disease, the characteristics of the organism and the characteristics of the course of the disease. The composition and dosage, as well as the course of administration, are selected by a medical specialist, who controls the effectiveness of the selected drugs.

    In addition to antibacterial compounds, doctors also prescribe a course of taking anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers, if necessary, and setting up a blockade. Medications are taken both in the form of tablets and as a course of intravenous and intramuscular injections, directly into the affected area, which makes the treatment more effective.

    Physiotherapy

    Physiotherapy. In this case, with the help of certain physiotherapeutic measures, doctors influence stagnant processes and improve blood flow, allowing you to speed up recovery, relieve inflammation, affecting fibrous tissue, if the latter has already begun its pathological growth. This can be warming up and massage, UHF and mud therapy, other procedures to speed up recovery. Operational intervention. It is rarely used, only in exceptional cases, under certain circumstances and the consequences of the course of epididymitis. When performing surgery, doctors either drain the focus of the inflammatory process itself, or excise dead tissue. This will prevent the subsequent development of the pathological process and the threat to the life and health of the man.

    Indications for surgical intervention are:

    • if suppuration of the appendage has formed during the course of the disease – this is an absolute indication for surgical intervention;
    • diagnosed abscess involving the epididymis or the testicles themselves, which may be detected by ultrasound;
    • microabscesses affecting the testicles or adnexa diagnosed by physicians during MRI;
    • acute form of epididymo-orchitis that develops after an injury;
    • if doctors suspect testicular torsion or appendage appendage;
    • lack of positive dynamics of therapy on the sixth day after hospitalization;
    • acute form of epididymitis;
    • chronic course of the disease with frequent relapses;
    • diagnosing a patient with dense in texture, painful seals in the appendage itself, which do not resolve for a long time;
    • tuberculous form of epididymitis.

    In addition to the treatment course, in order to obtain positive dynamics of therapy and speed up the recovery process, medical specialists recommend the following to the patient:

    In case of epididymitis, the prescribed bed rest must be strictly observed

    Strictly observe the prescribed bed rest, move less so as not to injure the prostate and testicles .

    To relieve pain and swelling, apply cold compresses to the scrotum. Keep the scrotum in one, fixed, elevated position. This will improve blood flow and reduce swelling.

    Friction and trauma to the testicles and adnexa must also be minimized. At the time of taking antibiotics and physiotherapeutic procedures, it is worth abandoning alcoholic beverages, which can reduce the therapeutic effect.

    Is it possible to have sex with epididymitis

    In the case of timely and properly selected therapy, epididymitis can be completely cured and prevent the development of serious complications, as well as restore the reproductive system of a man and his former sexual activity. If the pathology is neglected, treatment is not carried out, or medications are not properly selected, the disease flows into a chronic form of the course, provoking many complications.

    In particular, doctors identify the following possible complications that affect the body of a man:

    • spread of infection and inflammation to other internal organs;
    • formation of purulent foci and abscess in the scrotum;
    • development of fistulas on the skin of the scrotum, as well as death and necrosis of the testis;
    • infection of the blood with an infection and the development of large-scale sepsis;
    • development of Fournier’s gangrene affecting the scrotum;
    • male type of infertility, which is typical for 50-60% of patients, especially when diagnosing bilateral chronic epididymitis.

    Preventive measures voiced by doctors are simple. With their observance, you can preserve your own health and masculine strength for many years.

    Timely and effective treatment of all infectious and inflammatory diseases affecting the genitourinary system – this is urethritis, prostatitis and cystitis.

    Safe sex

    Regular, at least 1-2 times a year, visits to the urologist for preventive purposes – this will allow you to identify the pathology in the early stages of its course and prescribe effective treatment in a timely manner.

    Safe sex is a consistent sexual partner, no promiscuous sex or use of contraception and avoidance of STDs. Both frequently repeated sexual intercourse and frequent masturbation, arousal and sexual intercourse, which do not end in ejaculation, can provoke an inflammatory process.

    A man should avoid hypothermia , which can provoke a weakening of the immune system and the negative impact of pathogenic microflora on the body and reproductive system of a man.

    Worth Minimize all testicular injuries Wear special protective equipment when participating in certain sports such as martial arts or hockey.

    It is necessary to wear underwear made of plain , not synthetic materials .

    Compulsory observance of all rules of personal hygiene – constant water procedures and the use of separate bed linen and towels.

    At the slightest suspicion of a pathological change in the genitourinary system – you should immediately contact for qualified assistance to the doctor .

    It is possible to practice sex with this diagnosis only after determining the severity of the inflammatory process, as well as the root causes of its occurrence. The list of contraindications can be supplemented with the following items:

    1. If this is inflammation caused by a sexual infection, sex should be excluded during therapy and before examination for sexual infections, so that the prescribed course gives positive dynamics and helps to overcome the disease. Sex should be completely excluded (even in a condom). There is a high probability of infection of the sexual partner.
    2. If the cause of the problem is an injury to the scrotum, a man is unlikely to be able to have an active sex life. In this case, only rest, compliance with the recommendations of the attending physician and restriction of any sexual activity are shown.
    3. If an acute form of pathology is diagnosed, this requires a man to rest for the testicles and their appendages, as a result, sex should be excluded.
    4. When diagnosing a chronic form of the inflammatory process, sex does not affect the healing process and the outcome of the treatment, as well as the practice of masturbation (masturbation).

    It is possible to have sex with a diagnosis, but only after a complete examination of the patient. In the case when epididymitis is the result of a sexually transmitted infection, a condom should be used during sexual relations. It is necessary to start medical therapy of the disease in time, and then there will be no need to think about abandoning the usual way of life.
