Medicated shampoos for psoriasis: 12 Best Shampoos for Scalp Psoriasis Recommended By Dermatologists
The 6 Best Shampoos For Scalp Psoriasis
Scalp psoriasis can be challenging to treat, but there are ways to alleviate the itching, scales, and irritation that tend to go hand-in-hand with the condition. First up: Make sure you’re using the right shampoo. To learn more about the best shampoos for scalp psoriasis, Bustle spoke with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Tess Mauricio, M.D., who recommends rotating shampoos that contain coal tar, salicylic acid, ketoconazole, and zinc pyrithione, which are some of the most effective ingredients for treating scalp psoriasis out there.
Along with rotating shampoos, how you use them is of equal importance. Dr. Mauricio says instead of using the shampoo on your hair, apply it onto your (wet) scalp. Massage it in and leave it on for about five minutes before rinsing it out. “If you have long hair, you may want to use a non-medicated shampoo for your hair, as these medicated shampoos are meant for the scalp, not necessarily your hair,” she adds. Dr. Mauricio also recommends scalp brushes for better absorption. “Used on a regular basis, [they] can help exfoliate and remove thick flakes and allow the ingredients of shampoos to penetrate the scalp better, which will increase efficacy.”
Also, since stress is highly correlated with scalp psoriasis flareups, Dr. Mauricio says that managing stress is very important — so, though easier said than done, anything you can do to reduce your stress levels is great. Finally, if over-the-counter shampoos aren’t working, consult with your dermatologist. They can prescribe topical corticosteroids and discuss other treatment options that may be more effective.
To see the best shampoos for scalp psoriasis, including a few picks recommended by Dr. Mauricio, keep scrolling.
1. Best Coal Tar Shampoo
“Coal tar is a mainstay in the treatment of psoriasis,” says Dr. Mauricio, adding that coal tar shampoos, such as Neutrogena T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo, can be very effective. This popular shampoo received the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) Seal of Recognition, meaning it’s intended to be non-irritating and safe for people with psoriasis. It helps treat itching and reduces scalp buildup, but there are some limitations to the benefits of coal tar. Kids can’t use the ingredient, for one, and you have to be careful with sun exposure when using coal tar. It can also temporarily discolor light-colored hair, and also runs the risk of staining your skin or clothing.
Note that Dr. Mauricio has her patients with scalp psoriasis rotate between this, Selsun Blue, Nizoral, and a shampoo with salicylic acid — all featured below — for best results.
2. Best Ketoconazole Shampoo
Another one of Dr. Mauricio’s recommendations, Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo contains ketoconazole, an ingredient that can help decrease inflammation and lessen the risk of infection. Over 30,000 Amazon reviewers left this a five-star review or rating, with over 100 mentioning that it’s helped treat their psoriasis in particular.
3. Best Selenium Sulfide Shampoo
Selsun Blue Shampoo, which actually has a dark green color, is another doctor-approved pick for treating scalp psoriasis. It contains 1% selenium sulfide, a medication that works to treat a variety common scalp and skin conditions, including seborrheic dermatitis. This also has a nice, cooling feel, thanks to the menthol in the formula.
4. Best Salicylic Acid Shampoo
The 3% salicylic acid in this Nizoral shampoo and conditioner can help exfoliate the scales on your scalp and break down thick patches, and may also be able to help soothe itching, redness, and other forms of irritation. This convenient, two-in-one shampoo and conditioner is free of alcohol, which can sometimes cause more drying and irritation, explains Dr. Mauricio.
5. Best Zinc Pyrithione Shampoo
Zinc pyrithione is another topical medicine that can help decrease inflammation, says Dr. Mauricio, so feel free to add a shampoo that contains this ingredient into your rotation, too. Vanicream Free & Clear Medicated Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is an antifungal shampoo used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including psoriasis, dandruff, and seborrheic dermatitis. The super-gentle formula is ideal for people with very sensitive skin, since it’s free of most common chemical irritants, like dyes, fragrance, sulfates, and parabens.
6. Best Non-Medicated Shampoo
If you want to use a non-medicated shampoo on your hair, there are other ingredients that can be beneficial to your scalp, three of which are in this shampoo and conditioner from Honeyskin. Those include coconut oil, aloe vera, and tea tree oil. Though coconut oil isn’t a proven treatment at this time, Dr. Mauricio explains, many people claim it helps with itching and flaking since it’s highly moisturizing, while aloe vera and tea tree oil have long been used for their hydrating and antibacterial/antifungal/anti-inflammatory benefits, respectively.
Dr. Mauricio likes scalp brushes for their exfoliating benefits and the way they help medicated shampoos more effectively penetrate the scalp. The soft bristles on this one also provide a gentle, relaxing massage, so it feels amazing on irritated, itchy scalps. Certainly worth picking up for just $8!

Best scalp psoriasis shampoos and creams 2021
Anybody who has suffered, or is suffering from, scalp psoriasis will know that it’s very difficult to deal with. One day you might think your scalp is healthy, the next – for an undefined reason – your relationship with the autoimmune disorder becomes closer than you’d like.
“Psoriasis is an inflammatory dermatosis that affects between two and five per cent of the UK population,” explains Tracey Walker, director of education at the Institute Of Trichologists. “Scalp involvement is common and sometimes it is only seen there. It can appear at any age but does have peaks in the teens and in the sixties.”
“Scalp psoriasis is an inflammatory condition that affects the scalp skin causing the excessive and rapid growth of skin cells. It can lead to the formation of thick and scaly plaques,” continues medical consultant Dr Vidhi Patel. “In modern medicine there no such cure for this condition, apart from topical steroids or lotions, which actually only cause a local suppressive effect, not treating it at all.”
Presenting – as Patel mentions – as dry, silvery scales, which if picked or scratched can leave bleeding points, scalp psoriasis can lead to hair loss, pityriasis amiantacea (where the scales start to adhere to the hair and mat it on the scalp) and depression, as it generally looks unpleasant. While no cure has yet been found, there are products out there that can help ease itching, pain and actually prevent the formation of scales.
“The first line of treatment involves using medicated shampoos (containing coal tar or cade oil),” explains Walker. “These are anti-mitotic, mitosis being the turnover of skin scales that is much higher in cases of psoriasis – up to five times higher. If shampoo is not enough, a keratolytic ointment applied to the scalp and left on for ten to 15 minutes prior to shampooing – once a week – will help to lift the excess scale off.
“With any scalp dermatosis it’s best to avoid highly perfumed grooming products – keep the products as simple as possible because, potentially, the skin can become secondarily sensitised to products once irritated,” Walker continues.
Below are the products we advise investing in, from medicinal treatments to Mother Nature’s finest. Disclaimer: we aren’t suggesting these will cure your psoriasis.

If you have psoriasis on your scalp, a medicated shampoo can be an effective way to treat your symptoms. Read on to find out more about psoriasis shampoos and decide which might be the best for your needs.
About psoriasis shampoo
Psoriasis shampoo is a type of medicated treatment designed for people with scalp psoriasis. Typically, shampoos for psoriasis don’t require a prescription, but you may need to have a short conversation with the pharmacist before you buy them or answer some confidential questions when purchasing online.
Unlike regular shampoos, psoriasis shampoos are not designed to wash the hair. Rather, they are applied like a treatment and left on for five to 10 minutes before rinsing. After you have used a psoriasis shampoo you may need to use regular shampoo and conditioner on your hair.
Types of psoriasis shampoo
Psoriasis shampoos typically contain one or more of these ingredients:
- Coal tar
- Salicylic acid
Coal tar is a thick, dark liquid which is known to have anti-inflammatory and moisturising properties, making it a good treatment for psoriasis. Psoriasis shampoos containing coal tar are typically available without a prescription. They are usually sufficient to treat mild symptoms of scalp psoriasis, such as flaking.
Because coal tar is dark in colour it can stain skin and fabric, and can even temporarily darken the hair. You should apply it carefully as you would with hair dye.
Two popular coal tar psoriasis shampoos are:
- Polytar – alleviates itching, reduces scaling and inflammation
- Neutrogena t/gel –effective treatment for a dry and itching scalp
Salicylic acid is a substance that causes the outer layer of the skin to peel and shed. It can be an effective treatment for scalp psoriasis in which thick plaques have built up under the hair. Psoriasis shampoos containing salicylic acid usually also contain coal tar and coconut oil – one example is capasal, which is available over the counter in your local pharmacy.
Steroids can be found in certain prescription-only shampoos for people with moderate to severe psoriasis. Steroids can reduce inflammation and irritation. One psoriasis shampoo containing steroids that your doctor might prescribe is Etrivex. This should be applied in small amounts, rubbed into the scalp, and left in for 15 minutes before rinsing. Treatment should last no longer than four weeks.
How to use psoriasis shampoos
Psoriasis shampoos should not be used like normal shampoos. They are not designed to clean the hair, and you will normally need to use a regular shampoo to wash your hair after you have finished the treatment.
You should use psoriasis shampoos exactly as directed by your pharmacist or doctor. If you’re in doubt, carefully consult the patient information leaflet that came with the product – if you can’t find it, you can search for it online at Medicines.org.
When applying psoriasis shampoo to your scalp, make sure you use the recommended amount, and make sure that it reaches the scalp, and doesn’t get stuck in the hair. Some psoriasis shampoos must be left on for 10-15 minutes, while others should be rubbed in and rinsed out twice.
You shouldn’t leave psoriasis shampoo in your hair longer than recommended as you could damage the skin.
Psoriasis scalp applications
Another treatment for scalp psoriasis similar to shampoo is scalp applications. These are medicated ointments, gels or liquids applied directly to the scalp. Scalp applications might contain coal tar, vitamin D analogues, or steroids.
Unlike psoriasis shampoos, scalp applications should not be washed out. One exception to this is cocois ointment – this product contains coal tar and salicylic acid and should be applied to the scalp for one hour before being shampooed out.
Coal tar scalp applications are typically available over the counter without a prescription. Scalp applications containing vitamin D analogues or steroids typically require a prescription from your doctor.
Obtaining psoriasis shampoos and scalp applications
As we’ve already highlighted, several types of psoriasis shampoo and scalp application are available without a prescription. Certain products, including Polytar, can even be bought without speaking to a pharmacist.
However, it’s generally a good idea to speak to a medical professional before you start using any psoriasis shampoo or scalp application – if you haven’t received a diagnosis of scalp psoriasis, you may end up using the wrong treatment.

The Ultimate Shampoo Guide for Scalp Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin disease that occurs when your immune system sends flawed signals to your skin cells, telling them to mature and reproduce too quickly. But if you’re living with scalp psoriasis, then you already know this. You’ve probably tried your fair share of different treatments and shampoos for your scalp. If you’re still willing to experiment or aren’t happy with your current choice of shampoo, this guide is for you!
Finding the right shampoo can alleviate those more intense symptoms and make it easier to enjoy the day or sleep. In this guide, we look at the best psoriasis shampoos and their key attributes. Hopefully after reading this, you’ll know exactly what type of shampoo will work best for your scalp psoriasis.
Coal tar is one of the oldest and most commonly used treatments for psoriasis. Tar works by:
- Slowing the growth of skin cells, preventing some of the excess buildup
- Killing off the bacteria that causes scalp psoriasis
- Soothing irritation
- Softening scales and crusting
- Helping restore your skin’s health
Coal tar shampoos vary in concentration and (as one would expect) a higher concentration means stronger effects. The FDA only allows up to 5% tar to be sold over the counter, since extremely high concentrations may be carcinogenic. Don’t worry, levels of tar that may cause cancer are the types to be found in industrial paving! You won’t be at risk from a shampoo. Nevertheless, the link warrants certain restrictions on what you can get without a prescription.
Speaking of risks, there are a couple things you should know about coal tar shampoo:
- It may be smelly and cause irritation rather than helping. Like most topical medications, you should test it on a small patch of skin before using it.
- It makes you sensitive to the sun for at least 24 hours after use, sometimes longer. Plan accordingly and pay special attention to sun exposure. On the day following a hair wash, hats and sunscreen are an even better idea than usual!
- If you get coal tar shampoo in your eyes, rinse them with water for at least five minutes. If you swallow any, contact a poison control center immediately.
- Talk to your doctor before trying coal tar shampoo if you are:
- Pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant
- You are already taking other psoriasis medications (including over-the-counter treatments!)
- You have sores or cuts on your scalp
Now that we’ve gotten all of the warnings out of the way, let’s get to the tips! If you and your doctor think coal tar shampoo is a good choice for you, here are some things to keep in mind:
- Coal tar shampoo works best if you leave it in for a full ten minutes after lathering. You can even rinse and repeat if necessary.
- Don’t use conditioner afterwards. If your hair is prone to dryness, try to find a coal tar shampoo with added coconut oil or other oils.
- Read the instructions on the bottle regarding how often to use the coal tar shampoo. You can use normal shampoo on off days if you like.
- If your doctor says it’s right for you, you can use a moderate-strength topical steroid solution overnight after using your coal tar shampoo. This is often an effective combination.
Some common examples of coal tar shampoo include:
Salicylic Acid Shampoos
Does salicylic acid already sound familiar to you? If so, there’s a good chance you or one of your loved ones struggles with acne.
Salicylic acid is actually used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including several types of psoriasis! The acid causes the skin to shed its cells, which may cause extra flaking in the short term. However, a salicylic acid shampoo can have excellent long-term effects on your scalp psoriasis symptoms.
As with tar-based shampoos, there are a couple situations in which you should avoid using salicylic acid. In fact, some of them are the exact same. Talk to your doctor if any of the following apply to you:
- Currently pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant
- Taking any other medications for your psoriasis (including over-the-counter treatments!)
- Have a cut or open sore on your scalp
- You have any of the following issues:
- Kidney or liver problems
- Skin irritation or infection
- Poor circulation
- A history of Reye syndrome
- You are under 18
- If you are on:
- Ammonium sulfate
Salicylic acid shampoo also comes in both prescription and nonprescription varieties. If you and your doctor think an over-the-counter salicylic acid shampoo is right for you, here are some instructions:
- Apply shampoo to a DRY scalp
- Let it sit for 5 minutes (you can gradually increase this time if needed)
- Rise your hair thoroughly
- Wash your hair as usual, with a normal shampoo and conditioner
How often you use the medicated shampoo will depend on the concentration of the salicylic acid. Remember to read the instructions carefully and consult with your doctor if needed.
If you only have mild psoriasis and salicylic acid shampoo is too harsh, you can either find a brand with a lower concentration or try a shampoo with:
If your nonprescription option seems like it’s not making enough of a difference, you may want to ask your doctor or healthcare provider if a prescription option is better for you. There are a few differences when it comes to prescription salicylic acid shampoos:
- Apply to a WET scalp with the provided applicator
- Massage in and rinse thoroughly, without waiting 5 minutes
- Repeat daily unless instructed otherwise
- Don’t use a traditional shampoo and conditioner afterward
Keratolytic shampoos are somewhat like salicylic acid shampoos, since they also work by forcing the excess cells to shed. However, keratolytic shampoos are a more intense treatment option and typically only used for severe cases of psoriasis. Keratolytics are typically only used on the scalp, since it’s one of the thickest layers of skin on the body and sometimes requires extra heavy lifting. Ask your doctor or healthcare provider if a keratolytic shampoo could be right for you.
There are a variety of other ways to alleviate psoriasis symptoms. Though there is no link between non medicated shampoos and a cure for psoriasis, certain alternative options may help remove scales and moisturize the skin. These include:
- Aloe vera
- Coconut oil
- Tea tree oil
- Zinc pyrithione
Some psoriasis patients use phototherapy, a light therapy that exposes them to controlled amounts of UV light. Others make sure that whatever treatment shampoo they use contains eggs, which have over 70 naturally-occurring vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Orally taking fish oil has also been known to help.
Just because something is “natural” doesn’t mean it’s risk-free. Please be sure to run any changes or treatment ideas by your dermatologist or other health care provider before trying them.
Of course, a healthy lifestyle is something that will help with any medical condition, including psoriasis. Eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep, and managing stress are always good ideas.
Psoriasis can be both physically and emotionally painful, but finding the right shampoo can work wonders for your scalp. From coal tar shampoo to salicylic acid shampoo to even the strongest keratolytic shampoo, you can find the right shampoo for your scalp psoriasis. Just don’t forget to let your doctor know about any changes you make!

If you’re battling eczema, take heart in the fact that you’re not alone; it affects an estimated 31.6 million people in the U.S. “Eczema is a condition where a genetic variation affects the skin’s ability to protect itself from outside factors, such as irritants and allergens, and the skin becomes red and itchy,” explains dermatologist Dr. Kautilya Shaurya, of Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City. This redness and inflammation can crop up anywhere on the face or body, including the scalp.
“The most common type of scalp eczema is known as seborrheic dermatitis,” adds dermatologist Dr. Annie Gonzalez, of Riverchase Dermatology in Miami. It manifests as scaly patches, red, inflamed, itchy skin, and even flaking—AKA all things that are no fun to deal with.
Here’s where choosing the right shampoo comes into play. You basically have one of two options. You can seek out medicated formulas with ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, and selenium sulfide, all of which can help address those unwanted symptoms. Or, you can stick with ultra-mild, hypoallergenic options that will be very gentle on the compromised skin so as to not irritate it any further. (You can also try alternating between the two.)
Ahead, the best eczema shampoos sure to bring sweet relief to your stressed-out scalp.
Eczema is no fun to deal with anyone on your body, but perhaps even more so on your scalp, which is when a good eczema shampoo can make all the difference. The Mustela Stelatopia Foam Shampoo is approved by experts and the National Eczema Association, a formula that’s so gentle that its intended use was for babies. At the drugstore, pick up the Neutrogena T/Sal Therapeutic Shampoo with Build-Up Control, a good choice if you have scalp eczema, psoriasis, or dandruff. And if flakes are your main complaint, try the DHS ZInc Shampoo, an affordable go-to.
What to Look For In an Eczema Shampoo
A Medicated Formula
More specifically, one that contains zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, or selenium sulfide, active ingredients that can help combat the symptoms of eczema, such as itching and flaking.
A Super-Gentle Formula
On the flip side, if your eczema is milder or you perhaps don’t want a medicated option, stick with mild, hypoallergenic formulas that won’t irritate your already stressed-out scalp. (Fragrance-free is always one important criterion.)

Efficacy of Iralfaris shampoo in the treatment of scalp psoriasis: a videodermoscopy evaluation prospective study in 70 patients
This work has the aim to test the sensibility of VSCAPSI method in the evaluation of effectiveness of a medicated shampoo for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease histologically characterized by proliferation and loss of differentiation of keratinocytes, angiogenesis with vasodilatation and increased permeability, and inflammation. Scalp involvement is a common clinical feature of psoriasis, that is present in the 25% of patients who suffer of it. Videodermoscopy (VD) permits a magnified view of the surface components of the epidermis and papillary dermis, which are not visible to the naked eye, together with the ability to capture digitally the viewed images and to store them for later use. Moreover videodermoscopy is a non-invasive technique, used to analyze cutaneous peripheral microcirculation. Therefore VD could be an useful tool in evaluating the efficacy of treatments for scalp psoriasis. The clinical benefit of currently available medicated shampoos for the treatment of scalp psoriasis is restricted, due to their limited efficacy, low cosmetic appeal and safety and tolerability problems. Therefore effective and safe products are needed especially for the long term management of scalp psoriasis. A specific shampoo designed for the scalp hygiene in psoriatic patients has been recently developed. This shampoo contains urea, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, icthyol pale and laureth 9 (polidocanol). Aim of the study was to evaluate in a 12-week prospective monocenter, open-study the efficacy and tolerability of an emollient, keratolytic shampoo (Iralfaris shampoo ISDIN, Barcelona; Ir-S) applied three times a week in patients with scalp psoriasis. The efficacy of the shampoo has been valuated with VSCAPSI.
Seventy subjects with mild to moderate/severe scalp psoriasis were enrolled in the trial, after their informed consent. Efficacy was assessed using a specific and validated videodermoscopy scalp psoriasis severity index (VSCAPSI) score, performed at baseline, after 45 and 90 days. Patients were evaluated for itching.
VSCAPSI score at baseline was 8. 5. Ir-S induced a significant reduction of VSCAPSI score in comparison with baseline value both after 45 and 90 days of treatment. The use of shampoo lead to a progressive reduction of VSCAPSI score getting a score of 4.2 at T45 and a score of 4.0 at T90 (P=0.001 vs. baseline). The use of Ir-S has significantly reduced the percentage of patients reporting itching sensation.
The treatment was safe and well-tolerated with an high cosmetic acceptance. Ir-S is a good alternative to other medicated shampoo in the treatment of mild to moderate scalp psoriasis. Moreover, in the treatment of severe scalp psoriasis, it can lead to an improvement if associated with topical medications.

Topical therapy for scalp psoriasis: from tradition to innovation

Approximately 80% of patients with psoriasis with lesions of smooth skin were observed and lesions of the scalp, but in 25% of cases of psoriasis of the scalp occurs in isolation. It is known that in almost 48% of patients psoriatic eruptions occupy most of the head (scalp, face, ears) and 82% of patients suffering from dermatosis experience a constant feeling of discomfort and have an unpresentable appearance, which causes deep social isolation and maladjustment. The modern algorithm for the treatment of scalp psoriasis, according to the recommendations of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (2009), includes the use of short contact formulations in the form of shampoo. Etrivex Shampoo is the first and only short contact formulation developed for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. The shampoo contains 0.05% clobetasol propionate as the main component, as well as cleansing, foaming, conditioning and other components that allow you to effectively use the healing power of IV generation glucocorticosteroids, providing cosmetic hair care. The article presents its own successful experience of treating 15 patients with psoriasis of the scalp.

The lesion of the scalp presents particular difficulties for the choice of topical therapy, and the presence of rashes on open areas of the skin and the aesthetic unattractiveness of lesions significantly reduce the quality of life of patients . One of the most common chronic inflammatory diseases of the scalp is scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. Up to 3% of the world’s population suffers from psoriasis, i.That is, about 80 million people, with the same frequency of women and men, and seborrheic dermatitis affects 1 to 3% of all immunocompetent adults (more often men than women) .
According to the literature, the incidence of psoriasis of the scalp in comparison with other dermatoses of similar localization ranges from 40 to 80%. In about 80% of patients with psoriasis with lesions of smooth skin, lesions of the scalp were also observed, however, in 25% of cases of psoriasis of the scalp occurs in isolation [1, 2].
Psoriasis is one of the most common chronic inflammatory systemic dermatoses with predominant skin lesions and, probably, genetically determined immune disorders, which are realized under the influence of a number of trigger factors, manifesting an inflammatory process in the dermis, accompanied by persistent impairment of proliferation and morphological differentiation of keratinocytes .
The average area of the scalp is about 700 cm2, while the average surface area of the hair in women is about 6 m2, and in men – about 1 m2, in addition, the anatomical and physiological features of the skin determine a certain specificity of the development of psoriatic eruptions in this zone …Diagnosis of the disease is based on the characteristic clinical manifestations: an abundance of sharply delimited erythematous-squamous rashes of a silvery-white color with clear boundaries, raised, constantly itchy and abundantly flaky, infiltrated large plaques and chalk-

papules, often significantly extending far beyond the boundaries of hair growth (spreading to the skin of the face, temporal region, auricles, eyebrows, behind the ear region and chest). The rash is usually symmetrical. One of the features of the clinical manifestations of psoriasis on the scalp is a diffuse lesion of large areas of the skin, accompanied by abundant peeling, and there may not be typical efflorescences. However, in most cases, a characteristic clinical feature of the lesion of this zone is the presence of a scalloped edge of the affected area, which is well defined by the border of hair growth on the forehead and temporal areas and is a bright pink, sharply delimited, garland-shaped corolla of psoriatic plaque protruding above the level of healthy skin.On palpation of these elements, a positive “step” symptom is determined, which distinguishes the process from seborrheic dermatitis. Depending on the nature and volume of the spread of rashes on the scalp, there are 3 degrees of severity of the process (Table 1).
Effect of scalp psoriasis on the quality of life of patients
Features of the psychoemotional state of this category of patients have been studied for a long time, and today there are two views on the role of mental factors – psychogenicity in the genesis of the development and progression of dermatosis. On the one hand, they can act as trigger provoking factors in the manifestation of exacerbations of psoriasis, on the other hand, for most patients the very fact of the presence of a skin disease is perceived as a severe mental trauma, especially when the process is localized in visible areas of the skin, since it imposes significant restrictions on the usual lifestyle, professional activity, social activity . It is known that in almost 48% of patients psoriatic eruptions occupy most of the head (scalp, face, ears) and 82% of patients suffering from dermatosis experience a constant feeling of discomfort [3-5]. Constant irritation and flaking of the scalp determine the unpresentable appearance of patients, which causes deep social isolation and maladjustment. Problems with work are noted in 75% of cases , persistent depression – in 54% of cases [3, 7], decreased sexual activity – in 50%, suicidal thoughts – in 20% of cases .
Treatment of patients with psoriasis of the scalp presents great difficulties, since, in addition to these features, the process is characterized by a more pronounced inflammatory component than on smooth skin .
Thus, in psoriasis of the scalp, there is a twofold increase in the production of interleukin-8, defensins P4, calcium-binding protein S100 by hair follicles (Table 2).
It has been established that three members of the S100 family of proteins are involved in the work of the body’s nonspecific defense system. Proteins S100 – a group consisting of more than 20 calcium-binding proteins with low molecular weight, the molecules of which contain domains that bind Ca2 + ions. The S100 protein genes are located on chromosome 1 (C21). Two proteins – S100A8 (calgranulin A; MNR8), S100A9 (calgranulin B; MRP14) – are expressed in granulocytes, monocytes and macrophages at the early stages of their differentiation, and one protein – S100A12 (calgranulin C) – is localized in granulocytes. All calgranulins while in

cell cytoplasm, are involved in the regulation of processes that determine cell differentiation, the exchange of fatty acids (including arachidonic), the functioning of the cytoskeleton associated with phagocytic activity and migration of immunocytes.
Having sufficient efficacy, almost all topical agents for the treatment of psoriatic efflorescence of the scalp can be used by the patient independently, however, the undoubted problem is the need for their long exposure. The surface of the scalp is difficult to access for drugs, therefore, the application of traditional ointments and solutions of long-term contact requires compliance with certain household restrictions and conditions, the violation of which reduces the effectiveness of therapy and leads to patients refusing treatment. Low cosmetic acceptability of most of them is one of the most unpleasant aspects of therapy, adversely affecting their compliance .
The existing drugs are quite diverse, however, topical glucocorticosteroids (TCS) are first-line drugs and are included in the clinical guidelines for the management of patients with this dermatosis. An urgent problem in our country is the uncontrolled use of TGCS of a strong class of long-term contact, due to which their atrophogenic properties can be realized.
Analogs of vitamin D3, salicylic acid, tar, zinc and drug combinations are widely used, many of which are fatty and have an unpleasant pungent odor, staining and irritating substances .
Preparations of vitamin D3 analogs (cal-cypotriol) are characterized by a slow onset of action, possible development of skin irritation at the application sites (erythema, itching and burning sensation), hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria, and can also lead to persistent skin hyperpigmentation. In addition, being inactivated at low pH, they do not combine with the whole

by a number of traditional topical preparations, primarily with salicylic acid, which complicates their use . Zinc preparations with prolonged use cause excessive dryness of the skin at the sites of application.Tar preparations have an unpleasant specific odor, a potential carcinogenic effect, and can also color the hair, scalp and clothing . In this regard, 54.6% of patients are not satisfied with the results of traditional therapy using these agents and are always looking for more effective and cosmetically acceptable topical agents .
The methods of phototherapy (UV and PUVA) are often accompanied by phototoxic reactions (erythema, severe pruritus, hyperpigmentation), in addition, their potential carcinogenic effect is actively discussed .
Thus, experiencing significant inconveniences and not getting the quick desired effect from standard topical therapy, patients do not adhere to the prescribed treatment regimen in 40-73% of cases and in 73% of cases express concern about possible adverse events associated with the use of long-term contact with TCS [3 ].
In this regard, the search for highly effective topical drugs, the properties of which would not reduce the adherence of patients to therapy, seems to be very relevant in modern clinical practice.A modern topical agent must be highly effective and safe

at minimal exposure, easy to apply to the scalp and has optimal cosmetic properties in the form of colorlessness and odorlessness . In addition, the possibility of long-term therapeutic and prophylactic care of the scalp during remission is of great importance for the patient, which will allow them to control the disease, determining their quality of life .
The modern algorithm for the treatment of scalp psoriasis according to the recommendations of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (2009) includes the use of short contact formulations in the form of shampoo (Fig.1).
The most important active substances in the treatment of scalp psoriasis are GCS. Strong evidence of efficacy has been obtained with the use of clobetasol propionate, a topical agent belonging to the class of very potent drugs in this group .
Etrivex Shampoo is the first and only short contact formulation developed for the treatment of scalp psoriasis.B co-
having become a shampoo, the main component includes 0. 05% clobetasol propionate, as well as cleansing, pe-

No-forming, conditioning and other components that allow you to effectively use the healing power of IV generation GCS, providing cosmetic hair care (tab.3).
A number of comparative studies have shown that the efficacy of clobetasol propionate shampoo is statistically significantly higher than the efficacy of calcipotriol solution (p = 0.016) and 1% tar shampoo (p <0.001) . By the end of the course of therapy, 84% of patients showed a significant improvement or improvement in their condition (a decrease in the initial DISHS index by more than 50%). The most pronounced positive dynamics was observed in relation to such clinical symptoms of the disease as itching and flaking. So, by the end of the 2nd week of therapy 90%

patients noted the complete absence of itching and flaking. From the point of view of subjective perception of the effectiveness of treatment and ease of use of the drug, all patients gave a good or excellent assessment of this form of the drug.
We included 0.05% Etrivex shampoo in the course of treatment of 15 patients diagnosed with psoriasis vulgaris with lesions of the scalp as a mono-means of topical therapy. All patients (9 women and 6 men, mean age 29.2 ± 2.4 years) had typical psoriatic eruptions of mild and moderate severity, as well as not only a long history of the disease (more than 5 years), but also extensive experience in the use of various methods of treatment of the scalp. In addition, 6 of 15 patients had typical eruptions of psoriasis vulgaris on the smooth skin of the trunk and extremities, and 1 patient had psoriatic arthritis. Treatment with shampoo was carried out daily for 4 weeks with control of the dynamics of DITTTS
Method of application of shampoo Etrivex:
1. Shampoo is applied with massaging movements on dry scalp once a day, thoroughly rubbed into the affected skin.
2. Incubate for 15 minutes without covering the head.
3. Foam and wash off with water and / or regular shampoo (with neutral pH) (Fig. 2).
By the end of the 2nd week of topical therapy with Etrivexom, 80% of patients with moderate severity of the process showed a significant clinical improvement. The most pronounced positive dynamics was observed in relation to such clinical symptoms as hyperemia, infiltration, itching and desquamation (Fig. 3, a, b), while in patients with mild severity, the regression of rashes was almost complete. In general, by the end of the 2nd week of course therapy, 90% of patients noted a complete absence of itching and peeling. After carrying out the recommended therapeutic course of topical therapy with Etrivex, all patients are recommended a maintenance course with a regimen of application 2 times a week. The majority of the patients we observed (12 out of 15) continued to use the medicinal shampoo as maintenance therapy 2 times a week, while we did not observe fresh rashes for the next 3 months (Fig.4, a, b). Currently, dynamic monitoring of patients continues, however, patients already note an extension of the remission period against the background of prophylactic use of Etrivex, in contrast to previously used methods.
In terms of the compliance of the medicinal product in the form of a shampoo, all 15 patients gave a positive assessment of the form and efficacy of the medicinal product. In addition, some patients noted the positive effect of the shampoo on the rapid regression of elements that were accidentally exposed to water when it was washed off (hands, neck, décolleté and back).
It was due to the short exposure time (15 minutes per day) on the skin of class IV tHCS that a pronounced clinical improvement was achieved. During treatment and during the observation period (4 months), we did not register cases of skin atrophy and telangiectasias, which are often complications of therapy with long-term contact with TCS .
The use of active medicinal products in the form of shampoo in topical psori therapy regimens –
Aza of the scalp has a number of advantages and, above all, provides full contact with the scalp, is easy to apply and rinse off from the scalp, allowing you to avoid a number of typical aesthetic problems (traces of oily / greasy hair and traces of greasy / greasy stains on the bed linen and clothing).
• Patients highly appreciated the efficacy and completeness of Etrivex shampoo, easily included it in their care regimens, and believe that the use of short contact shampoo for maintenance therapy allows them to control their illness for a long time.
• Etrivex has a high efficiency and favorable safety profile. –
• The short-term application of Etrivex shampoo provides a lower incidence of adverse events compared to traditional TCS applied for a longer time.
• Etrivex is a cost effective maintenance drug.
• Etrivex (clobetasol propionate) shampoo 0.05% – a first-line drug for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Duration of the main course of treatment from
daily application of the drug should not exceed 4 weeks. As a maintenance therapy, the shampoo should be applied 2 times a week for 6 months to maintain the therapeutic effect and prevent relapses. In the event of exacerbations against the background of maintenance therapy, repeated courses of treatment with daily application of Etrivex shampoo can be carried out.
Thus, Etrivex shampoo, containing 0.05% clobetasol propionate, is the first effective and cosmetically adapted short contact therapeutic agent for the treatment of scalp psoriasis.

Shampoos and gels for psoriasis
Hygienic skin care for psoriasis should be carried out not only for cleansing, but also for the purpose of its treatment. In psoriasis, it is important not to irritate or dry the skin, because this can provoke an exacerbation of the disease, the growth of psoriatic plaques and the appearance of new ones, itching and flaking.
Shower gels and shampoos sold in perfume stores may be good for healthy skin and do their job. However, they are absolutely not suitable for psoriasis skin care. Common hygiene products include alkalis, surfactants, dyes and perfumery compositions – in a word, aggressive components that negatively affect the functioning of the sebaceous glands and the condition of skin cells. Shower gel and shampoo for psoriasis, on the other hand, should look after, nourish and moisturize the skin.
How to choose a shampoo for psoriasis?
Psoriasis of the scalp is manifested by red spots (plaques) on the scalp. Over time, they begin to itch first and then peel off. Plaques can be small and invisible to outsiders, or cover a large area of the head, including the forehead, the area behind the ears, and the back of the neck. Therefore, scalp psoriasis is not only a matter of health, but also a matter of beauty and tidiness – detached scales get stuck in the hair and fall on clothes, which creates a completely unpresentable image.
Psoriasis of the scalp
Choosing a shampoo for psoriasis may not be as easy as it seems at first glance.Since products from different manufacturers contain different medicinal components, as well as other additives, the patient may experience skin irritation or an allergic reaction if the wrong shampoo is used for psoriasis. The correct shampoo for psoriasis, which can meet all the needs of the patient without causing side effects, can be recommended by an observing dermatologist.
In addition, do not forget that this disease requires an integrated approach: cream, ointment, spray, lotion, gel and other forms of drugs are used simultaneously. Although all of the above forms can be used in scalp treatment, it is easier, more convenient and generally preferable to use shampoo for psoriasis. In addition to being easy to apply and distribute over the scalp, the shampoo cares for the hair and the healing substances are quickly absorbed.
Shampoo for psoriasis is applied according to the instructions to obtain the best effect. First, you need to moisten your hair with plenty of warm water. Then apply a little shampoo and lather well on the hair, gently rub the shampoo into the scalp with your fingertips.Without rinsing off the products, collect hair under a shower cap and wait 5-10 minutes (depending on the manufacturer’s instructions). Rinse hair with warm running water and, if necessary, repeat the procedure from the very beginning. Hair must be dried with a towel, the use of a hair dryer and fixing products can provoke an outbreak of the disease. Shampoo for psoriasis is usually applied 1-3 times a week for a month.
Shampoos may contain the following active substances: zinc pyrithione, selenium disulfide, allantoin, birch and willow tar, naphthalan oil, ichthyol, magnesium salts, keratin, salicylic acid, resorcinol, extracts of string, celandine, St. John’s wort, soybean, juniper , vegetable and essential oils.
Shampoos for the treatment of psoriasis, depending on the composition, can relieve inflammation and irritation, eliminate microorganisms from the surface of the skin, regulate the separation of sebum and the process of cell renewal, improve blood supply to tissues, stimulate the healing of psoriatic plaques, remove dead skin particles. In addition, all medicated shampoos are made from ingredients that do not damage the protective layer of the hair.
Shampoos with pine, birch, juniper, coal tar are highly effective. It has an antipruritic, anti-inflammatory effect, removes excess sebum and dead skin scales, suppressing the growth of fungi. However, some patients may experience overdrying of the skin, so tar products should be used with caution. It should also be noted that preparations with tar have a specific smell that not everyone likes.
Multi-component medicated shampoos have a powerful multidirectional effect. For example, Losterin shampoo has the ability to relieve itching and inflammation, restore the natural lipid protection of the skin and damaged areas, sanitize wounds, nourish and moisturize the skin. This is facilitated by deresined naftalan, Japanese Sophora extract, burdock root and a complex of oils – almond, sunflower and linseed.

after using shampoo Losterin
Positive dynamics in the form of a decrease in desquamation, hyperemia and infiltration in psoriasis was noted 10 days after the start of daily use of Losterin shampoo. The maximum effect was achieved after 20-28 days
Recommendations for hair care
- Rub the shampoo in with your fingertips, but not with your fingernails, otherwise new plaque may develop (Koebner’s syndrome).
- Do not use a hairdryer – it will dry out your hair and scalp.
- To reduce the effects of hard water, use a mixture of vinegar (60 ml) and warm water (20 ml). Rinse your hair first with this solution and then with cool water.
- Use blunt massage combs or brushes. They do not injure the skin, but they gently distribute the sebum through the hair, remove dead scales and improve blood circulation in the scalp.
- Avoid hair coloring and styling products. They contain aggressive ingredients and can provoke an allergic reaction, irritation and inflammation.
How to choose a gel for psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a disease that requires the development of special hygiene habits and the use of specially formulated products.
Psoriasis of the skin of the abdomen and chest
Why is it preferable to use gel instead of soap for psoriasis? It’s all about the method of application and the effect on the skin of the shower gel. Due to its structure, the gel foams better, lays on the skin in an even layer and very delicately removes impurities.
Dermatological gel for psoriasis should have a complex effect. The ingredients included in the psoriasis gel should cleanse the skin, have a moisturizing effect, nourish the skin, and have exfoliating properties. Can a perfume gel be used for psoriasis? Dermatologists say no. Once you have been diagnosed with psoriasis, you should completely rethink your approach to cleansing your skin. Regular shower gel has a destructive effect – it dries the skin, causes cracking and flaking, itching. This negative effect is achieved due to the content of aggressive detergents such as surfactants, sulfates, parabens. They remove impurities well, but at the same time they inhibit the work of the sebaceous glands, completely deprive the skin of the protective layer and natural moisture.Fragrances and dyes cause irritation, and in some patients an allergic reaction, due to which the plaques not only do not disappear, but grow, merge with each other and take up more and more area.
First of all, the gel for psoriasis should act according to the principle “do no harm” – that is, carefully remove impurities without injuring or irritating the skin. The most neutral remedy is baby soap , which is also available in liquid form and can be used as a gel for psoriasis. It does not contain fragrances and dyes, is hypoallergenic, contains beeswax, lanolin or glycerin, fatty acids, spermaceti, animal fats or vegetable oils. However, baby soap can dry out the skin, so a moisturizer should be used after each use.
There is a lot of controversy about laundry soap . Some patients claim that its regular use has helped to get rid of plaque permanently. However, it must be said that such an effect is the exception rather than the rule.Laundry soap has an increased level of alkali and fatty acids (72% in the highest grade, up to 65% in products of the 2nd and 3rd grade), which really has an antibacterial, antipruritic and cleansing effect. But at the same time, this product is extremely dries and irritates not only sick, but also healthy skin, and is also contraindicated in case of increased dryness of the skin and hair. In addition, laundry soap is only available in solid form.
One of the most popular skin care products is tar shower gel. It relieves itching, reduces flaking, and in the exudative form it also dries out plaques.Tar preparations contain on average 10% birch, coniferous or coal tar. Due to this, the gel has antifungal and antibacterial effect, improves blood circulation in the skin, helps to restore damaged cells, has a resorbing, analgesic, reducing effect.
Usually, the composition of tar gel includes herbal ingredients to soften and moisturize the skin. Otherwise, it is recommended to rinse the body with a decoction of medicinal plants.Tar gel for psoriasis is contraindicated for people with tar allergy and kidney disease.
Israeli companies produce therapeutic cosmetics with Dead Sea minerals and peloids . Such gels include biologically active, hormone-like substances, vitamins, enzymes, organic acids, antioxidants. Peloid gels not only deeply cleanse the skin, but also reduce flaking, stimulate cell metabolism, the production of collagen and elastin.
Gels containing Dead Sea mineral salts contain magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium chlorides.Such preparations deeply moisturize and restore the skin, kill bacteria, eliminate irritation, dryness and flaking.
Coal tar gels are made from a mixture of coal and pine or juniper wood. Such gels are effective, but they have many contraindications. Preparations based on coal tar eliminate itching, flaking, inflammation, relieve redness, and also slow down cell division. At the same time, coal tar is very allergenic, it is forbidden to care for sensitive thin skin (especially on the face, in the groin area, in the armpits), their use is limited in time and, if this gel is used for psoriasis, direct sunlight should be avoided.
Gel based on Naftalan oil has an antimicrobial effect, local irritating effect, which provides blood flow to the affected area, promotes cell regeneration and normalization of metabolic processes. All these properties are possessed by Losterin shower gel based on Naftalan oil. In addition to naphthalan, the Losterin shower gel contains Japanese sophora extract and jojoba, flax, sunflower and olive seed oils. Thanks to these components, the gel reduces inflammation, reduces itching, kills microorganisms, softens, nourishes and moisturizes the skin, removes flaking.
In addition, sulfur (has exfoliating and antibacterial properties), castor oil (softens and heals the skin, supports the sebaceous glands), beeswax (nourishes the skin with vitamins, accelerates regeneration , disinfects the surface).
Also, medicinal gels for psoriasis may contain plant extracts:
- St. John’s wort strengthens the walls of capillaries, improves local blood circulation, accelerates epithelialization;
- Burdock Root relieves inflammation, regenerates skin and kills bacteria;
- Series – natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent;
- Wheat sprouts deeply moisturize and nourish the skin.
It should be noted that it is not recommended to use any therapeutic gel for psoriasis in the acute stage, as they can cause skin irritation and, as a result, deterioration. In an acute period, the skin should be cleaned with cool water or a decoction of medicinal plants.

What is psoriasis shampoo?
Psorix is a multicomponent preparation that has a complex effect on the skin and joints in psoriasis. It does not suppress symptoms, but eliminates the cause of scaly dermatoses – autoimmune disorders.
The effect of using shampoo for the treatment of psoriasis
Psorix was advised to me on one of the popular medical forums. I thought for a long time whether to order it: I doubted that drugs from the Internet could bring any benefit. However, after re-reading the reviews about this tool, and making sure that there are no negative ones among them, I decided to take a chance. I do not regret my decision, with the help of drops and gel I eliminated all the symptoms of the disease in a week and a half.I am planning to buy another complex for my grandmother, I am sure that it will help her to cope with psoriasis.
Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, Psorix does not contain toxic substances – betamethasone, gentamicin, retinoids, etc. Therefore, it is suitable for the treatment of psoriasis in patients of all ages. But it is undesirable to take drops together with other homeopathic remedies. The active ingredients of Psorix enhance the effect of other medicines, which is fraught with side effects.
How to order

I was diagnosed with psoriasis when I was 17 years old.Now I am 34 years old, and I have just learned to cope with this scourge. I use Psorix – I like that this drug has a completely natural composition and there are no side effects. Symptoms of the disease disappear for 2-3 months, and in order to prevent relapse, it is enough to undergo a short course of prevention. I am very pleased with this remedy, and I will recommend it to my relatives!
Long-term use of Psorix does not cause addiction, side effects or allergic dermatoses.
After the stress I experienced, I developed psoriasis. I decided not to postpone the treatment and went to a doctor’s consultation. I was prescribed a long course of treatment, but unfortunately it practically did not help me. The effect was short-lived, and as soon as I finished the course of treatment, my problem returned to me. Then I decided to look for ways to get rid of this disease on my own. I shoveled a lot of information on the Internet. So I found Psorix. I got acquainted with the conclusions of doctors, patient reviews and decided to try. Moreover, the drug has a good composition – it is natural. I ordered drops and a cream. For use, everything is quite simple: drink drops 2 times a day and smear the affected areas with cream the same number of times. I did it at the same time, so that the same interval between taking the drug would be observed. Less than a week later, I saw the first results. By the end of the course, not a trace of psoriasis remained, and the general condition of the skin also improved. More than a month has passed after the treatment and my hated psoriasis has not returned.I’m very glad to have found Psorix. If there is a relapse, I will only buy it. Where to buy shampoo for psoriasis treatment? Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, Psorix does not contain toxic substances – betamethasone, gentamicin, retinoids, etc. Therefore, it is suitable for the treatment of psoriasis in patients of all ages. But it is undesirable to take drops together with other homeopathic remedies. The active ingredients of Psorix enhance the effect of other medicines, which is fraught with side effects.

How do the properties of the skin affected by psoriasis change?
Image: brgfx / freepik.com
Skin affected by psoriasis is characterized by an accelerated renewal of the epidermis. Normally, it takes 3-4 weeks for the complete renewal of epidermal cells, and with psoriasis, it takes only 4-7 days. Due to dehydration, the skin becomes dry and less elastic. In addition, it becomes prone to inflammation, so plaques that appear on different parts of the body, especially on the arms, legs, trunk and scalp, are reddish in color.Plaques are usually covered with thin, whitish scales.
Psoriasis is a chronic, undulating disease that usually occurs after 15 years of age.

How can pain and itching be reduced?
To avoid aggravating the inflammation, try not to rub or scratch the plaque. When caring for your skin, handle it with extreme care. Do not remove keratinized crusts that form on the elbows, knees and scalp. It is best if the scales peel off gradually on their own as the skin heals.
How should I wash my skin affected by psoriasis?
Photo: madeaw_ec / freepik.com
When washing, try not to rub or stretch the skin.
It is better to give preference to showers over baths, as they dry out the skin. However, to relax, you can sometimes take a bath, provided that it is not too long and the water is not very hot – maximum 37-38 ° C.
Soap should be neutral and fragrance-free.
After washing, do not try to remove dead skin on the elbows and knees.
Dry the skin with a towel very carefully, lightly pressing it to the body.
Thoroughly dry all folds and hidden areas of the skin. When doing this, pay special attention to the ear canals and the skin behind the ears, armpits, folds of skin under the mammary glands, umbilical region and groin, as well as the skin between the toes.
Is it possible to swim with psoriasis?
Swimming with psoriasis is possible, but not during exacerbations, when the skin is especially vulnerable.Explain to other bathers that psoriasis is not contagious and they do not risk anything by being near you.
Apply petroleum jelly to plaques before swimming in the pool to protect them from chlorine and other chemicals added to the water. After leaving the pool, rinse your skin with warm clean water. Dry the skin with a soft towel, lightly patting it on the body.
What cosmetics and skin care products can be used for psoriasis?
For psoriasis, you can use mild alkaline soaps, deodorants, makeup, etc.Products are best suited for sensitive or baby skin. If you are allergic to any perfumes, use the same hypoallergenic products that you used before the first exacerbation of psoriasis. Remember that substances that cause allergic reactions can be found in air fresheners and fabric softeners.
If the skin in the armpits is inflamed, it can be rinsed with saline. It is not recommended to use deodorants until the redness of the skin goes away.Products containing alcohol and aromatic substances should be avoided.
You can use regular and waterproof cosmetics for eyes, lips and face.
For hair removal, it is better to use cold wax, which is less irritating to the skin than hot wax, depilatory creams or shaving, especially if the plaque is located on the legs and armpits.
What skin care products should I use for psoriasis?
It is difficult for psoriasis sufferers to decide which makeup removers or body lotions are best to use, especially given the ever-growing range of these products. In this section, we will introduce you to what products are suitable for the care of sensitive skin of the face and body.

Psoriasis is a chronic disease, often with an undulating course. It is characterized by increased proliferation of keratinocytes, leading to hyperkeratosis (thickening of the stratum corneum of the epidermis), and the appearance of inflamed reddish plaques on the skin.

List of funds
The range of products for skin care for psoriasis is far from complete, so it is important to choose products that do not cause irritation and do not have allergenic properties. Skin irritation can lead to the Koebner phenomenon, i.e., to the appearance of new plaques on the irritated skin. Keratolytic agents are commercially available to help remove scales, making it easier for topical drugs (such as glucocorticoids and vitamin D derivatives) to reach and absorb the damaged skin. Finally, emollients (moisturizers) should be used for psoriasis as they increase the elasticity of the skin and make it less rough and dry. Especially suitable for this are products based on water from thermal springs (they have emollient and anti-inflammatory properties).
While skin care products cannot replace topical psoriasis medications, they can complement each other. Skin care products help improve the general condition of psoriasis patients by reducing discomfort and improving the appearance of the skin.Well-hydrated skin looks better and becomes softer, making psoriasis patients feel more confident. Thus, using these remedies can help improve their quality of life.
Moisturizing Body Lotions
In psoriasis, the skin becomes dry and rough, the stratum corneum of the epidermis thickens significantly. Disruption of cellular processes makes it more difficult for the skin to retain moisture, and it undergoes dehydration. Therefore, for psoriasis, it is recommended to use emollients that make the skin more pliable.Substances such as urea, amino acids and lactic acid, which absorb and retain water, give these products emollient properties, while petroleum jelly, beeswax, vegetable oils and ceramides, which prevent skin dehydration, provide protective properties.
What is the best tool to use?
It is better to use products labeled “O / W” (oil in water) on the packaging, which make the skin less oily than when using products labeled “W / O” (water in oil). For people with psoriasis, products for very dry skin and products for people with atopic dermatitis are usually suitable. However, inflammation of the skin in psoriasis does not always lead to dryness. Atopic dermatitis is a skin disorder that manifests itself as eczema. Although some of its manifestations (especially redness and itching of the skin) resemble some forms of psoriasis, atopic dermatitis does not lead to thickening of the stratum corneum.
Is there a special treatment?
No specific treatment has been developed for different forms or stages (progressive or stable) of psoriasis. However, all patients well tolerate moisturizers, which are used after showers and baths, and have a long lasting effect. It is believed that they can slow down the renewal of skin cells in half and prevent the appearance of new lesions.
It is important to remember that emollients should not be used immediately prior to UV-A or UV-B irradiation of the skin, as they obstruct the access of this radiation to the skin. However, they can be used the day before the procedure or the night before.
What remedies to buy if there are itchy plaques?
Patients with psoriasis, especially if they have itchy plaques, are suitable for the care of skin affected by atopic dermatitis (enriched with omega-3 fatty acids and essential fatty acids).Although a deficiency of fatty acids is characteristic of atopic dermatitis, there is every reason to believe that they are necessary in psoriasis, since it is characterized by an accelerated renewal of the epidermis.
Keratinization of the skin is a normal process during which the skin is renewed by keratinocytes. Keratinocytes make up the main population of epidermal cells and produce keratin. In psoriasis, their functioning is disrupted, as a result of which the stratum corneum of the epidermis thickens and becomes covered with scales. As the desquamation of keratinocytes in psoriasis is impaired, the skin becomes coarser. Various substances are used to combat hyperkeratosis (thickening of the skin), including salicylic acid, urea, lactic acid.
Which substances are most effective?
Salicylic acid, which has a keratolytic and antiseptic effect, is an active ingredient that is part of many products used for irritation and peeling of the skin. Urea acts as a keratolytic and moisturizer. The so-called alpha hydroxyl acids and fruit acids (such as glycolic and citric) have long been used in cosmetology for their exfoliating and smoothing properties, as they help remove excess dead cells. Stronger alpha hydroxyl acids (lower pH) have more exfoliating effects. In psoriasis, only the weakest alpha hydroxy acids such as ammonium lactate can be used. Keratolytics are available in creams and emulsions, they help to remove obsolete epidermis and scales. These products are especially recommended for use on thickened and scaly skin and scalp.
Most keratolytic agents contain another active ingredient that helps moisturize the stratum corneum of the epidermis. These products can be used as a maintenance treatment to keep the skin moist and prevent flare-ups. When the epidermis is damaged, these agents soften it and make it more plastic.
Treatment for weeping skin lesions
In some cases, psoriasis is accompanied by oozing of the skin, in which the affected areas resemble bubbles located on its surface. These bubbles are filled with a colorless or yellowish transparent liquid. If damaged, spontaneously or as a result of scratching, the skin looks moist and may crust over. In places where the skin experiences constant friction, bubbles reappear after they burst. It can be caused by injury or inflammation.
If your face is not affected by psoriasis, any product appropriate for your skin type can be used to cleanse it, including soap, water, makeup remover, cleansing milk, or gel.If you have acne, it is best to use mild cleansing gels. If your skin is dry, we recommend using soap-free cleansers, toilet soaps, and cleansing milk. If the skin is affected by psoriasis, you need to carefully monitor its cleanliness, cleaning it in the morning and evening, and every day (or even several times a day with severe dryness) apply a moisturizer to it. While there is no ideal skin care product for psoriasis, you should use a product that does not cause irritation. You can treat the skin with mineral water vapor, which helps to remove scales and reduce redness. Dry the face skin by gently blotting with a towel. If the skin is affected, you should avoid visiting beauty salons, and at home – using masks and facial scrubs, which can increase irritation. In the absence of damage, agents with a wide variety of active ingredients (eg anti-aging) can be used if desired, as long as they are well tolerated. However, products containing vitamin A derivatives should be used with caution.
In psoriasis of the scalp, the skin in this area may thicken and become covered with red plaques covered with a large number of scales. To remove scales and reduce itching, you need to use keratolytic shampoos that do not contain tar. The shampoo is applied to the hair roots and washed off after 5 minutes. After that, the hair should be thoroughly rinsed and then rinsed again with a shampoo suitable for the type of hair. After the scalp is clear of the lesion, you need to use a mild anti-dandruff shampoo. If you use the right shampoo, you can wash your hair daily. Keratolytic creams can be used to remove scales from the scalp. For maximum effect, it is recommended to apply the cream to the scalp and leave it on for 2 hours, wearing a shower cap. In the absence of an exacerbation of psoriasis, hair can be dyed, but it should not be washed with hot water or dried with hot air.
Although sunlight has beneficial effects on the skin in psoriasis, it must be protected from the harmful effects of UV-A and UV-B. Special sunscreens are available for patients with atopic dermatitis, such as Mustela SPF50 high protection lotion for children.
