Metformin and slim fast: Metformin Weight Loss: The Truth Behind the Side Effect

Metformin Weight Loss: The Truth Behind the Side Effect

What Is Metformin and How Does It Work?

“[Metformin] has been considered a first-line medication in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and it mainly acts by lowering the amount of glucose released by the liver,” says Minisha Sood, MD, a board-certified endocrinologist who’s based in New York City. “It also helps a hormone called insulin to work better by helping muscles use glucose in a more efficient manner. When insulin works better — and insulin sensitivity improves — a person’s insulin levels are lower than they would be otherwise.”

There’s no cure for type 2 diabetes, but the right combination of medication and a healthy lifestyle can stabilize blood sugar levels, which, of course, is the end goal of any diabetes treatment.

As the medication helps your body properly metabolize glucose from the breakdown of food and restores your ability to respond to insulin, you’ll not only feel better but you can potentially avoid complications of high blood sugar, such as heart disease, kidney damage, nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy), and eye damage (retinopathy).

Why Does Metformin Cause Weight Loss?

The relationship between metformin and weight is unclear, but several theories provide possible explanations for weight fluctuations. Reduced hunger is one documented side effect of metformin, according to the Mayo Clinic.

For example, metformin may affect hunger cues. In one small study, 12 women with obesity and type 2 diabetes who were not taking insulin were randomly given two dose levels of metformin — 850 milligrams (mg) or 1,700 mg — or a placebo three times a day for three days, with each participant going through the study three times so they had each dose and the placebo. Participants received a meal test on each third day and rated their hunger level before eating. Researchers found that hunger levels in the metformin group were significantly lower, especially after the participants took the 1,700 mg dose compared with when they were taking the lower metformin dose or placebo.

If you take metformin, it might not appear as if you’re eating less with this drug. But the number of calories you’re currently consuming for breakfast, lunch, and dinner might be lower than your normal food intake. This subtle change in appetite could be responsible for a gradual decline in weight.

Having a frequent upset stomach or diarrhea, which is another side effect of the drug, can also affect your food intake.“Temporary gastrointestinal upset, typically experienced at the beginning of treatment, from taking metformin may also play a role in weight loss,” says Suzanne Magnotta, RD, CDCES, vice president of clinical services for Achieving Better Control in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

According to a study published in the April–June 2017 issue of the Journal of Research in Pharmacy Practice, gastrointestinal side effects are a primary complaint from those who receive metformin tablets in their original formulation. The most common symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea, which affects about 2 to 63 percent of people on the drug. Discomfort can be so severe that you may not feel like eating much and subsequently consume fewer calories. The extended release forms of metformin have documented fewer side effects in studies.

Is Long-Term Weight Loss Possible on Metformin?

Even though metformin can help you shed pounds, the amount you lose might be far less than expected. On average, weight loss after one year on the drug is only 6 pounds, according to the Diabetes Care study.

So while metformin is often given to people with high insulin levels who have difficulty losing weight, it’s not a miracle weight loss solution, says Dr. Sood. In other words, don’t expect a dramatic change in weight if you overeat and lead a sedentary life. You must follow a sensible weight loss plan with healthy eating and physical activity to see any significant change in weight.

“If someone isn’t following healthy habits, then taking metformin will not result in weight loss,” she says. “It’s important to follow a healthy diet low in refined sugars and carbohydrates if [you are] prone to high insulin levels so that maximum benefit from the medication is received.”

Keep in mind that while the number on the scale might drop while taking this medication, this weight loss may be temporary. You could regain pounds once you stop taking the drug and your appetite returns to normal, hence the importance of sticking with a healthy lifestyle.

If you’re thinking about taking metformin with a weight loss medication, ask your doctor for recommendations. This combination could help you lose and keep off additional pounds, although there’s little to no clinical trial data to support this claim, says Sood.

Can People Without Diabetes Take Metformin?

What if you don’t have type 2 diabetes? Can you still take metformin for weight loss? This is an excellent question, and the short answer is yes. Sood explains that metformin has been used off-label, or outside its intended purpose, for weight management.

In fact, a review published in December 2018 in the European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology examining the efficacy of metformin for weight loss in overweight and obese people without diabetes concluded that the drug could significantly decrease body mass index in both adolescents and adults.

But because this drug is only available by prescription and hasn’t been approved for weight loss by the Federal Drug Administration, your doctor will likely first recommend some of these traditional strategies for weight loss:

If you don’t have type 2 diabetes, your doctor may sign off on this drug if you’re obese and struggling to lose weight. But again, metformin isn’t a substitute for healthy eating and regular exercise, which are keys to sustainable weight loss. These habits also encourage weight loss if you have type 2 diabetes but can’t take metformin.

“For those patients with diabetes who can’t take metformin, due to chronic kidney disease or other concerns, diet and lifestyle modifications will still be of utmost importance, whether they’re prescribed alternate medication or not. Controlling carbohydrate intake, increasing physical activity, and managing stress is the cornerstone of improving glycemic control,” says Magnotta.

“Make it a point to stand up every hour or so and walk around the room, the yard, or the block. Little bits of physical activity over the day add up, resulting in the burning of more calories as a result,” she says.

The Bottom Line on Metformin and Weight Loss

All things considered, metformin can cause a modest reduction in weight, most likely due to side effects, like a decreased appetite and an upset stomach. But although effective for weight loss, the drug doesn’t replace traditional dieting methods. So if you’re looking to lose more and keep the weight off longer, you have to get active and eat right.

Meformin Recall for Diabetes Drug

Eight drug companies are recalling more than 170 batches of extended-release (ER) metformin after lab tests detected high levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a chemical that has been linked to cancer in animal research. As of October 5, 2020, Teva, Amneal, Apotex, Granules, Lupin, Bayshore, Sun Pharmaceuticals, and Marksans had recalled their metformin-ER, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

RELATED: The Possible Benefits of Metformin for Type 2 Diabetes and Other Health Conditions

Here are seven things you need to know if you or a loved one has been prescribed metformin as part of a type 2 diabetes treatment plan.

1. Which Batches of Metformin Are Affected by the Recall?

Certain batches of metformin-ER are being recalled, and the FDA hasn’t indicated that metformin-IR, the most commonly prescribed type of the drug, is impacted.

As the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) notes, the recall impacts roughly 19.5 million prescriptions, or one-quarter of all metformin drug prescriptions, which average 78 million annually, according to a 2017 report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Robert Gabbay, MD, PhD, chief scientific and medical officer for the American Diabetes Association (ADA), estimated that these numbers are likely similar in 2020, though he noted the ADA does not track metformin prescription trends.

Jeremy Kahn, a spokesperson for the FDA, said the agency does not have information on the percentage of metformin-ER inventory affected by the recall. “Metformin-ER is not in shortage,” he added.

You can see the full list of recalled metformin-ER at the FDA website.

2. What Should I Do if I Take Metformin to Manage Diabetes?

Check to see if your metformin is part of the recall. If it is, don’t abruptly stop taking your meds without speaking with your doctor first, the FDA urges in an October 2020 statement. Doing so can send your blood sugar soaring, and that is risky in and of itself.

“Patients should continue to take their metformin until their pharmacist supplies a different manufacturer’s product or their doctor prescribes a different treatment,” says Matt Petersen, vice president of medical information and professional engagement for the ADA, in an official release.

As for what to expect when you contact your provider? It’ll depend on your individual health, but he or she may prescribe a different med that is not affected by the recall or potentially metformin-IR. “The solution in this instance is quite simple,” says Caleb Alexander, MD, the codirector of the Johns Hopkins Center for Drug Safety and Effectiveness in Baltimore: “Patients can simply be switched to a shorter-acting formulation.”

Dr. Gabbay agrees, noting that a switch to metformin-IR is possible because it regulates blood sugar the same way metformin-ER does. “ER can reduce side effects in some patients (stomach upset, diarrhea) compared to regular metformin, though in all patients those side effects tend to reduce with time,” Gabbay says. “Dosing of ER versus IR is somewhat different, so again, a switch must be managed by a patient’s primary care provider.”

3. What’s the Difference Between Metformin-IR and Metformin-ER?

Metformin-IR, which is sold under the brand name Glucophage, is generally split up throughout the day, though you may take only one dose per day to start, notes the discount drug website GoodRX. On the other hand, metformin-ER, which is sold under the brand name Glucophage XR, is often taken one time per day (however, in some cases, your doctor may okay splitting up dosing). It depends.

Check the bottle to learn which type of metformin you’re taking. Metformin is sold under several brand names, not only Glucophage:

4. What Is NDMA and Why Might Exposure to It Be Harmful?

NDMA is a chemical that has been associated with liver damage in humans, and animal studies have linked exposure to an increased risk of cancer and stillbirths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The chemical was once used to make rocket fuel, and is still sometimes produced as a byproduct of a variety of manufacturing processes, including the production of medicines, according to the CDC.

Kahn, the FDA spokesperson, said that the agency “has no information to provide on specific adverse events being linked directly to NDMA impurities.”

NDMA is classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. But that doesn’t mean you should panic. More on this later.

5. How Did Metformin Become Contaminated With NDMA?

The short answer is: Regulators still don’t know, though the cause under ongoing investigation, according to the FDA. They are asking all manufacturers of ER metformin — including companies not covered by the current recall — to test batches for NDMA before selling these drugs in the United States.

The FDA says it does not know how long NDMA has been present in the recalled metformin.

RELATED: Does Metformin Cause Weight Loss? What to Know Before Trying It

6. Is My Cancer Risk Higher if I’ve Been on Metformin-ER for a While?

Probably not, but it’s not certain. The FDA recalled certain batches of metformin after finding levels of NDMA “above the acceptable intake limit,” which is 0.096 micrograms.

Scientific research has produced mixed results on whether NDMA poses a cancer risk in humans, says Thomas Marron, MD, PhD, an assistant professor in oncology at Mount Sinai in New York City and a medical reviewer for Everyday Health.

While preclinical studies have suggested that NDMA exposure may elevate cancer risk, larger population studies in humans, such as a September 2018 study in the BMJ, have suggested that NDMA does not cause cancer in humans, Dr. Marron says.

Health agencies including the FDA and the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer also note that the levels in medicines contaminated with NDMA likely don’t contain enough of this impurity to cause cancer in humans.

What’s more, the FDA says it doesn’t expect NDMA to be harmful at low levels, even when someone is exposed over a long period of time, such as 70 years. The agency notes that samples of the contaminated metformin appear to have similar NDMA concentration to that of grilled and smoked meats.

Most often, people are exposed to NDMA by consuming these foods, along with cheese, or fermented foods like beer, according to the CDC. Certain cosmetics and cleaning products may also contain NDMA.

Whether NDMA poses a cancer risk from these consumer items is also uncertain, Marron explains. “It’s (NDMA) in foods like beer, cheese, smoked meats, all things associated with Western diets where there are higher rates of cancer in general,” he says. “It’s very difficult to parse out the different contributing factors, even when you have large data sets,” such as in the aforementioned BMJ study.

7. What if I’m Taking a Form of Metformin-ER Not Covered by the Recall?

You should continue to check the list of recalled metformin on the FDA’s website to ensure your medication is safe to use.

After all, the number of companies and batches of metformin-ER covered by recalls in the United States have been expanding. If your drug isn’t there now, you can check back later to be sure it isn’t added in the future. You should also check with your pharmacy to see how they would notify you if the batch of metformin-ER you’re prescribed gets added to recall lists.

17-Year-Old Loses 118 Pounds, Putting Diabetes in Remission

“I had bad cramps, intense leg cramps to the point where I couldn’t sleep,” Tayé recalls. “I kept walking around, which was making my mom mad, but I couldn’t sleep.” He constantly begged for water and yet began vomiting. Those are among the common symptoms of DKA, which also include frequent urination, fruity-smelling breath, and difficulty breathing, per the ADA.

“When we took him to the doctor I was asked if he had ever been tested for sugar, for diabetes. I thought, Why would we do that? He’s 15,” explains Stewart. “But I saw the look on the nurse’s face, and I could see that she was worried.” The nurse told them rush to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The boy was in such pain that he was no longer able to walk, so hospital workers had to wheel him in.

Once there his blood glucose level was measured at a stratospheric 694 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) (a normal reading is below 200 mg/dL, per the CDC). “They said we’re keeping him because he has DKA and I said, ‘What is that?’ I never thought in a million years they would say my son has DKA and diabetes, and will rely on insulin for the rest of his life,” says Stewart. Upon his release from the hospital, Tayé was put on three to four shots of short-acting insulin with meals, one shot of long-acting insulin at bedtime, and twice-daily oral doses of metformin.

“Riley sent me to classes to learn what to do,” says Stewart. “I was so terrified I could not do what was needed. I lay there and prayed about it, asking God to give me the knowledge, patience, and strength.” Worried that her son would face a future of diabetes complications such as limb amputations, as well as the high cost of insulin, Stewart was determined to wean him off insulin.

“I remember after they got discharged from the hospital and meeting Michelle for the first time,” says his endocrinologist. “We talked about the options and what life with diabetes is going to look like. And she said, ‘Dr. Nabhan, we’re going to win this.’”

A Diet and Lifestyle Makeover to Stabilize Blood Sugar

Seven weeks later and 20 pounds lighter, as a new lifestyle including exercise and a diabetes-friendly diet took hold, the insulin injections were history. That may seem like a brief time to be on insulin, but it is in keeping with best practices, says Mary Pat Gallagher, MD, the director of the Robert I. Grossman, MD, and Elisabeth J. Cohen, MD, Pediatric Diabetes Center at NYU Langone in New York City. Dr. Gallagher was not involved in Tayé’s care. “With type 2 diabetes, the goal is to get you off insulin within three months.” If weight loss, insulin, and metformin aren’t enough for a child or teen to reach their target blood sugar levels, adding liraglutide (also known as Victoza or Saxenda) is recommended.

At first, getting more exercise seemed like a daunting challenge. Tayé enjoys video games — especially Mario & Sonic — and preferred staying inside even before the COVID-19 pandemic kept him homebound. Stewart decided to bring the exercise indoors, insisting on an hour of exercise per day: typically, 45 minutes on the treadmill and 50 sit-ups. Twice a month, Tayé gets a break from the treadmill — as long as he does 100 sit-ups. His newfound fitness is reaping dividends as life emerges from lockdown. Exercise helps the body use insulin more efficiently, helping lower A1C. A review published in March 2020 in Mayo Clinic Proceedings suggests that regular exercise may also help reduce reliance on type 2 diabetes medications.

“Now I can play basketball with my friends,” says Tayé. “Before, I couldn’t play for more than five minutes, but now I can do it for a long time.” It’s easier to stick with activities you enjoy, he advises other young people. “Try to find something you are comfortable with and make fun out of it.

Exercise options abound. “There are multiple exercise videos that you can stream on your TV and do cardio in your house,” says Nabhan. “You can jump rope, you can dance, or if you have stairs in your home, go up and down the stairs. You really can be creative with what you do.” She advises that parents have their children ages 12 and older vaccinated against COVID-19 so they can exercise safely with other kids.

Hand-in-hand with exercise were the changes Stewart made to how she prepared meals to keep her son on a low-carbohydrate, low-fat, portion-controlled diet. “I had the measuring cups and measured everything, even down to the condiments. I counted the carbs in every teaspoon of ketchup,” says Stewart. She also kept a food journal for Tayé and sent weekly reports to his healthcare team.

Stewart furthermore found healthier ways to prepare Tayé’s favorite foods. She ditched grease frying, bought an air fryer, and relied more on oven baking. “He likes barbecue, so I would bake the chicken — use only 2 tablespoons of sauce and smear it on the chicken, then bake it in the oven instead.

Her tip for parents who are trying to help a child with type 2 diabetes lose weight and lower their blood sugar: “It’s important to eat and take meds and exercise on a schedule. Being consistent trains the stomach to be hungry at the same time each day, and that cuts down on snacking in between meals.”

RELATED: How Exercise Helps Prevent and Manage Type 2 Diabetes

A Commitment to Stay on a Healthy Path

Now entering his final year of high school, Tayé looks forward to studying computer science and dreams of having his own company one day. With that new life ahead will come the responsibility to maintain a healthy weight and blood sugar level on his own. His mother has played a large role in his success thus far, observes Nabhan. Going forward, “My hope is that he has seen what diabetes can do to you, and what it means to be diabetes-free. I do think he will have the ability to be a little bit more flexible with his diet, but he cannot lose this focus and live free as if he doesn’t have diabetes. We know that diabetes can come back with a vengeance.”

Once he makes the transition to college, it’s important for him to make his own schedule and stick to it, says Dr. Gallagher. College class and study schedules are more variable than those in high school, so it will fall to a college student with type 2 diabetes to create consistency on their own. “Make sure you get dressed and get out of your room, go to the gym or do whatever physical activity you like every single day.” She also advises reaching out to those who manage the campus meal plan to find out what diabetes-friendly options they provide.

Meanwhile, Tayé encourages other young people do what he has done to take back his health. “Just motivate yourself,” he says. “Find a goal and set it for yourself, whatever inspires you to lose the weight.”

Does it ACTUALLY Work? • MyHeart

Metformin weight loss claims are something that are often talked about by health professionals to be one of the benefits of commencing metformin therapy, but are they true? This is Similar to Phentermine.

Metformin is possibly one of the most important treatments in Type II Diabetes, so the question of metformin weight loss is of the utmost importance, as if true it could provide a means to lose weight as well as control high sugar levels found in diabetes.

What is Metformin?

Metformin is an oral hypoglycemic medication – meaning it reduces levels of sugar, or more specifically glucose in the blood. It is so effective that the American Diabetes Association says that unless there is a strong reason not to, metformin should be commenced at the onset of Type II Diabetes. Metformin comes in tablet form and the dose is gradually increased until the maximum dose required is achieved.

How Does Metformin Work & Why Would it Cause Weight Loss?

Metformin works by three major mechanisms – each of which could explain the “metformin weight loss” claims. These are:

  • Decrease sugar production by the liver – the liver can actually make sugars from other substances, but metformin inhibits an enzyme in the pathway resulting in less sugar being released into the blood.
  • Increase in the amount of sugar utilization in the muscles and the liver – Given that the muscles are a major “sink” for excess sugar, by driving sugar into them metformin is able to reduce the amount of sugar in the blood.
  • Preventing the breakdown of fats (lipolysis) – this in turn reduces the amount of fatty acids available, so less of them can be used to produce sugar.

What are the Side Effects of Using Metformin for Weight Loss?

It would be great if the proposed metformin weight loss effects resulted in someone losing weight, but only if it is safe to use metformin and not too much of a displeasure to do so.

On the whole, metformin is a fairly safe drug to use unless you have kidney or liver impairment or unstable heart failure. It can also in some cases cause lactic acidosis and for this reason needs to be stopped before any operations or scans using certain contrasts.

The “metformin weight loss” benefits are also not detracted from by side effects, as the most common side effect is loose bowel motions which often settle after the medication has been taken for a period of time. For this reason, if the metformin weight loss claims are true, there is no major reason it could not be used for this purpose in most individuals.

How Well Does Metformin Work?

Although metformin weight loss is the main issue of this article, the real measure of how well metformin works is by how much it improves diabetes control. The way of measuring this is through HbA1C, which amazingly shows an average of the bloods sugar levels over a 3 month period. Metformin incredibly reduces the HbA1C by an average of 1. 5%, which in the world of diabetes is a huge improvement. For this reason, if metformin weight loss claims are true, then this truly is a wonder drug for more reasons than one as it can help improve diabetes control thus reducing incidence of complications e.g. heart attacks such as the infamous ‘Widowmaker’.

Can Metformin Actually Help You Lose Weight?

Sadly for those wanting an answer to the Metformin weight loss question, the answer is not that simple. On a positive note, it does seem that in general, metformin does not lead to weight gain. But it is metformin weight loss that we are discussing, right? Well yes, but this point is important because the use of several diabetic treatments such as insulin or sulphonylureas often results in weight gain. So by not causing weight gain, when used to treat diabetes, metformin treatment results in a lower resultant body weight compared to other options.

Some studies however have reported metformin weight loss – in some cases up to 2. 9kg. These studies hold hope for the metformin weight loss claim, but the weight loss achieved is by no means substantial, meaning that metformin treatment for weight loss alone is not advised.

The fact is that metformin is an amazing drug for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. It is relatively safe to use and provides substantial results in terms of controlling blood sugars. When it comes to metformin and weight loss however, the results are simply not supportive of its use solely for this reason.

‘Can I Take Metformin If I Want To Lose Weight?’

Metformin is a drug designed to treat patients with Type 2 diabetes, but it comes with an interesting side effect: weight loss.

And Reddit is filled with stories from people who have lost weight on the drug. “Was trying to lose weight for a long time with no success,” one person wrote of being prescribed metformin. “I’m on 1000 mg a day and am down 10 pounds.” “I saw weight loss at first with 500 mg twice per day,” another wrote. “The difference was almost immediate.”

While some people say the drug didn’t do much for them, others swear by it—even those that don’t have Type 2 diabetes, says Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., an instructor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. In fact, Cody Stanford says that she often prescribes the medication to overweight or obese people who don’t have Type 2 diabetes.

Here’s what you need to know about the drug. (Take It All Off! Keep It All Off! is the no-gimmick, you-can-do-this, time-tested playbook packed with stories and secrets from women who dropped 20, 50, even 100 pounds and kept it off for at least a year!)

How It Works

Metformin causes a decrease in the release of glucose from a person’s liver. This helps to lower a person’s blood sugar when it’s too high and restore the way someone uses food to make energy, according to the Mayo Clinic. “Weight loss can occur because it decreases appetite in some people who take it,” says women’s health expert Jennifer Wider, M.D.

In order for the prescription to work effectively, the amount of metformin you take must be balanced against your diet and exercise because it helps level out your blood sugar, the clinic says. For that reason, if you change your diet or exercise, you doctor may need to change the amount of metformin you take.

Can It Help You Lose Weight?

Cody Stanford says she uses the medication often in her practice among those with and without Type 2 diabetes—and it works. “While metformin is typically prescribed for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, it has been shown to produce weight loss in some individuals with a low likelihood of adverse effects,” she says.

Here’s why: Regardless of whether or not the patient taking metformin has Type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance, the medication can improve a person’s insulin sensitivity. That increased sensitivity to insulin can keep a person’s blood sugar level, which prevents the hunger and carb cravings that come with spikes and subsequent drops in blood sugar, Stanford explains. And with less cravings and carbs, you’re more likely to have an easier time losing weight.

The meds also decrease a person’s glucose levels, which causes a lesser likelihood that excess sugar will be stored as fat tissue in the body, she says.

Finally, the drug can improve a person’s sensitivity to leptin, a hormone that makes you feel full and might increase your metabolism, Stanford says.

Is It Dangerous?

The medication is considered safe to use, but the Mayo Clinic notes that it can negatively interact with certain medications like aspirin. It’s also not recommended that you drink alcohol on metformin, and you should be cautious about using the drug if you have conditions like anemia or a vitamin B12 deficiency. People with kidney and liver problems should also steer clear, Wider says.

The most common side effects of using metformin are nausea, loose stools, and abdominal pain, Stanford says. Obviously, it’s important to take the drug under a doctor’s care.

The Bottom Line

Metformin is a fairly popular drug prescribed by doctors, Stanford says, and has shown to help with weight loss. But the medication is only available by prescription, so you need to see your doctor for an evaluation to make sure it’s right for you.

Can Metformin Help You Lose Weight Fast?

  • Taking metformin may help with losing weight, studies have shown
  • Metformin regulates blood levels in the body, causing reduced appetite and cravings
  • Health experts recommend combining the drug with a healthy diet and regular exercise

While metformin is most known for regulating blood levels for those with Type 2 diabetes, others say the drug comes with another interesting side effect — weight loss.

Studies have shown that metformin can help some people lose weight, although it is not a quick-fix solution. The drug is believed to have the ability to reduce appetite as well as change the way the body stores and uses fat, as per Healthline. This side effect could work best for those who follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Several users from Reddit shared how metformin helped them lose weight, with some noting that the difference occurred almost immediately.

“Was trying to lose weight for a long time with no success,” one user wrote.

“I’m on 1,000 mg a day and am down 10 pounds. I saw weight loss at first with 500 mg twice per day,” another stated.

Pictured: A person getting ready for exercise. Photo: Pixabay

In a long-term study, researchers found that the weight loss from metformin occurred gradually over one to two years. The amount of weight lost also varied from person to person, but the average amount ranged from four to seven pounds.

It should be noted that taking the drug without following any health habits may not lead to weight loss. According to Healthline, metformin is believed to have the ability to boost how many calories are burned during exercise. Thus, people who do not exercise won’t be seeng the weight loss benefit.

In addition, experts said that the weight loss caused by metformin may only last for as long as it is taken. This would mean that it is possible to gain weight again shortly after one stops using the drug.

In order to maximize the benefits of metformin, the amount should be balanced with one’s diet and exercise, so that it could regulate the blood sugar levels in the body. This would prevent hunger and cravings most often associated with spikes and drops in blood sugar, as per Women’s Health.

In general, experts said that the road to weight loss largely varies for each person. Although metformin can help with the process, the most recommended method by doctors would always be a combination of a healthy diet and exercise.

WHO has recognized this drug as one of the most effective drugs in the treatment of diabetes

The drug metformin was discovered in 1922, but it became widely used for treatment only in the 90s of the XX century. Doctors use it in the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus, and is also often used for other diseases (obesity, infertility, polycystic ovary disease, etc.).

How to take metformin correctly? What do you need to know when using it?

How to lose weight? With XENICAL it’s easy

In August, “Weekly Pharmacy” told its readers about the drug XENICAL (orlistat), which is intended to reduce excess body weight (No. 31 (252), No. 33 (254).This is a drug with a fundamentally new mechanism of action.

Many have already used the TIME TO LOW information line (tel .: 8-800-504-45-50; calls within Ukraine are free) and have consulted with a specialist on the problem of overweight reduction. The Hoffmann-La Roche office continues to receive phone calls. Today we bring to your attention the answers to the most frequently asked questions that arise when using XENICAL.

What is XENICAL? Why does a person lose weight when taking it?

– the first MEDICINAL PREPARATION for weight loss with the studied mechanism of action. Its effect is based on suppressing the absorption of fat in the intestine by blocking lipase. Unbroken fat molecules are not absorbed and excreted from the body.

XENICAL inhibits the absorption of up to 30% of fats from food. Due to a decrease in their intake from outside, the body begins to consume its own “energy resources”.

Reference : with a daily diet of 2900 kcal with fats, the body receives 1700 kcal. When taking the drug XENICAL , the absorption of 30% of fats is suppressed, that is, 510 kcal is “burned”. For comparison: in order to consume 510 kcal, you need to clear snow for 68 minutes or walk a distance of 14.5 km.

The effectiveness of the drug XENICAL has been proven during clinical trials, in which more than 7000 patients all over the world took part over 2 years.Patients who took XENICAL for several months, on average, “lost” about 10% of their body weight. XENICAL provides stable weight loss, prevents re-increase in body weight after stopping the drug. Losing weight reduces risk factors for the development of diseases such as diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension.

People taking XENICAL do not develop addiction to the drug, it can be used for a long time.

The drug XENICAL acts only in the lumen of the stomach and small intestine, does not have a systemic effect, therefore it does not have side effects on the central nervous system, brain, heart and other organs. When taking XENICAL there is no risk of overdose. Currently XENICAL is the most studied drug for weight loss.

The main reason for this is that more calories are supplied to the body with food than consumed, that is, a person eats more than he needs.Fat is an important source of calories in food, since burning 1 g of fat releases 2 times more energy than burning 1 g of proteins or carbohydrates.

Fats in food are absorbed by the body only after they are broken down in the intestine by a special pancreatic enzyme – lipase. Lipase enters the intestines at the beginning of a meal and acts so effectively that all fats from food are usually absorbed 100%. Therefore, as a solution to the problem of reducing excess body weight, the scientists of the company “F.Hoffmann-La Roche ”chose lipase neutralization.

The fundamental difference between this drug and food additives is that XENICAL is not a mixture of various substances, the mechanism of action of which is unknown, but a MEDICINAL PREPARATION containing one known active ingredient orlistat with a fundamentally new, well-studied mechanism of action.

Most dietary supplements have only a temporary effect of reducing body weight, either by acting on the hunger center in the brain, or by increasing heat transfer, or by diuretic or laxative effects. Therefore, after stopping the intake of nutritional supplements, body weight increases rapidly, reaching previous levels.

1. Starting to take XENICAL, some patients consume more carbohydrates and proteins, as a result of which the caloric content of food increases significantly. At the same time, they believe that “with XENICAL you can eat everything in unlimited quantities.” This is a delusion that can “negate” all the efforts of the patient.XENICAL inhibits the absorption of fats, but does not affect the metabolism of proteins and carbohydrates. Unfortunately, the “ideal drug” for weight loss has not yet been created, taking which, the patient could not limit himself to food.

2. Practice has shown that some of the patients who started taking XENICAL stop taking the drug after 2-3 weeks. In most cases, this is due to the fact that people expect to get results quickly. Unfortunately, fast weight loss without harm to health is simply impossible – what has been accumulating over the years cannot disappear in a week. The decrease in body weight when taking XENICAL occurs gradually (by an average of 1.5–4 kg per month).

3. When XENICAL is taken, undigested fat molecules remain in the lumen of the small intestine and are mixed with feces. An increase in the content of fat in the feces may be accompanied by such phenomena as the passage of gas, increased frequency of bowel movements, the stool becomes “greasy”. These reactions are not caused by XENICAL itself, but by fats that are not absorbed in the intestines. These phenomena take place when the amount of fat in the diet is limited.

Patients who are determined to lose weight need advice and ongoing support from an experienced specialist. The doctor will draw up an individual plan to reduce body weight, give advice on how to properly keep a “food diary” necessary for the patient for self-control.

In the Kiev City Clinical Endocrinological Hospital, patients with overweight and metabolic disorders are treated (c.Kiev, st. Pushkinskaya, 22, medical building, 5th floor, department No. 1).

Consultation on the treatment of obesity in this hospital can be obtained from the doctor Alla Petrovna Ogurtsova by phone: (044) 224-41-65 (from 10.00 to 16.00 on weekdays).

Application during pregnancy and lactation

There have been no adequate and strictly controlled studies of the safety of metformin during pregnancy.Use during pregnancy is possible in cases of extreme necessity, when the expected benefit of therapy to the mother outweighs the possible risk to the fetus. Metformin crosses the placental barrier.

Metformin in small quantities is excreted in breast milk, while the concentration of metformin in breast milk can be 1/3 of the concentration in the mother’s plasma. Side effects were not observed in newborns with breastfeeding while taking metformin. However, due to the limited amount of data, use during breastfeeding is not recommended. The decision to stop breastfeeding should be made in light of the benefits of breastfeeding and the potential risk of side effects in the baby.

Preclinical studies have shown that metformin does not have a teratogenic effect in doses that are 2-3 times higher than the therapeutic doses used in humans. Metformin has no mutagenic potential and does not affect fertility.

Application for violations of liver function

Contraindicated in severe violations of liver function.

Application for impaired renal function

Contraindicated in severe renal impairment.

Special instructions

Not recommended for use in acute infections, exacerbation of chronic infectious and inflammatory diseases, trauma, acute surgical diseases, risk of dehydration.

Do not use before surgical operations and within 2 days after their performance.

Metformin should be used with caution in elderly patients and those performing heavy physical work, which is associated with an increased risk of lactic acidosis. In elderly patients, asymptomatic renal dysfunction is often observed. Particular care is required if renal impairment is triggered by taking antihypertensive drugs or diuretics, as well as NSAIDs.

If during treatment the patient has muscle cramps, indigestion (abdominal pain) and severe asthenia, it should be borne in mind that these symptoms may indicate the onset of lactic acidosis.

During the period of treatment, it is necessary to monitor renal function; determination of the lactate content in plasma should be carried out at least 2 times a year, as well as when myalgia appears.

When using metformin as monotherapy in accordance with the dosage regimen, hypoglycemia usually does not occur. However, when combined with insulin or sulfonylurea derivatives, there is a risk of hypoglycemia. In such cases, it is necessary to especially carefully monitor the concentration of glucose in the blood.

During the period of treatment, patients should avoid drinking alcohol due to the risk of developing lactic acidosis.

Preclinical studies have shown that metformin has no carcinogenic potential.

ECO Polycystic. PCOS. Metformin. History of victory over the diagnosis.

Good afternoon. I would like to share my story of victory over the diagnosis of PCOS, polycystic ovarian genesis. In moments of despair, it was success stories like these that gave hope and strength to move on. (There are exhaustive questions and answers in the comments, I recommend reading too).In March 2014, we began our journey towards meeting our child. I knew there would be difficulties. From the age of 16, I was diagnosed with polycystic disease, hyperandrogenism, delays of up to several months, symptomatic treatment with vitamins and dyufastone until the age of 18, and after I was “put” in a JC on COCs. For six years of almost continuous admission there were: Diana 35, Yarina, Lindinet. In March 2014 I visited the DNA Clinic (Chelyabinsk, for you there will be the names of doctors and clinics with recalls .
