Nail conditions pictures. Common Nail Problems: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
What are the most frequent nail conditions affecting both fingernails and toenails. How can you identify various nail issues at home. What treatments are available for different nail problems. When should you seek medical attention for nail-related concerns.
Understanding the Structure and Growth of Nails
Nails are an essential part of our body’s integumentary system, serving both protective and aesthetic functions. To comprehend nail problems better, it’s crucial to understand their structure and growth process.
How fast do nails typically grow? Fingernails grow at an average rate of about one-tenth of a millimeter per day, while toenails grow more slowly, at approximately one-half to one-third the rate of fingernails. This growth rate can be influenced by various factors, including age and overall health.
What affects nail growth speed? Aging and diseases that impair blood flow to the extremities can slow down nail growth. Conversely, proper nutrition, good circulation, and overall health can promote faster nail growth.
Anatomy of a Nail
Understanding the structure of nails is essential for identifying and addressing nail problems. A typical nail consists of several parts:
- Nail plate: The visible part of the nail
- Nail bed: The skin beneath the nail plate
- Cuticle: The thin layer of skin that protects the nail root
- Lunula: The white, half-moon shape at the base of the nail
- Nail matrix: The hidden part under the skin that produces new nail cells
Common Nail Changes and Their Causes
Nails can undergo various changes due to external factors, health conditions, or natural aging processes. Recognizing these changes is crucial for maintaining nail health and identifying potential underlying issues.
Splitting, Peeling, and Brittle Nails
Why do nails become brittle and prone to splitting? This common problem often results from frequent exposure to water, strong soaps, and other chemicals. These substances can strip the nails of their natural oils, leading to dryness and fragility.
How can you prevent splitting and brittle nails? Regular moisturizing and minimizing hand exposure to harsh chemicals can help maintain nail health. Using gloves when doing household chores and applying hand lotion after washing hands can provide significant protection.
Nail Color Changes
Nail discoloration can occur for various reasons and may indicate different conditions:
- White spots (leukonychia): Often result from minor injuries and typically resolve on their own
- Black or purple-black color: Usually caused by blood under the nail following an injury
- Dark discoloration without injury: Could potentially indicate melanoma, requiring immediate medical attention
How long do nail color changes typically last? Minor discolorations like white spots may persist for weeks or months before disappearing. Injury-related discolorations usually fade as the nail grows out and the injury heals.
Changes in Nail Shape and Texture
Alterations in nail shape and texture can occur due to various factors:
- Aging: Formation of ridges is a normal part of the aging process
- Poor circulation: Can lead to thicker, more brittle nails, especially in older adults
- Nutritional deficiencies: May cause changes in nail texture and strength
- Underlying health conditions: Certain diseases can manifest through nail changes
Ingrown Nails: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention
Ingrown nails are a common and often painful nail condition that affects many individuals. Understanding its causes and symptoms can help in prevention and early treatment.
What causes ingrown nails? The main factors contributing to ingrown nails include:
- Improper nail trimming techniques
- Wearing shoes that are too tight
- Genetic predisposition
- Injury to the nail or surrounding skin
How can you identify an ingrown nail? Symptoms of an ingrown nail typically include:
- Pain and tenderness along the nail edges
- Redness and swelling of the surrounding skin
- Warmth in the affected area
- In severe cases, pus or drainage may be present
What preventive measures can be taken against ingrown nails? To reduce the risk of developing ingrown nails:
- Trim nails straight across, avoiding rounded edges
- Wear properly fitting shoes with adequate toe room
- Keep feet clean and dry to prevent infections
- Avoid cutting nails too short
Complications of Ingrown Nails
In rare cases, ingrown nails can lead to more serious complications. What are the potential risks of untreated ingrown nails? If left untreated, an ingrown nail may result in:
- Infection of the surrounding skin (paronychia)
- Abscess formation under the nail (subungual abscess)
- Chronic pain and discomfort
- In severe cases, bone infection (osteomyelitis)
Nail Separation: Causes and Treatment
Nail separation, also known as onycholysis, is a condition where the nail detaches from the underlying nail bed. This can occur for various reasons and may affect both fingernails and toenails.
What are the common causes of nail separation?
- Trauma or injury to the nail
- Fungal infections
- Psoriasis or other skin conditions
- Allergic reactions to nail products
- Certain medications
- Thyroid disorders
Can a separated nail reattach to the nail bed? Once a nail has separated from its nail bed, it will not reattach. However, new nail growth will eventually replace the separated portion.
How long does it take for a new nail to grow back? The regrowth process varies depending on whether it’s a fingernail or toenail:
- Fingernails: Typically take about 6 months to grow back fully
- Toenails: May take up to 18 months to grow back completely
Treatment and Care for Separated Nails
While waiting for the new nail to grow, it’s essential to care for the affected area properly. What steps should be taken to manage a separated nail?
- Keep the affected area clean and dry
- Trim the separated portion of the nail carefully to prevent further damage
- Protect the nail bed with a bandage if necessary
- Avoid using nail polish or artificial nails until the new nail has grown in
- Consult a healthcare provider if there are signs of infection or if the separation is due to an underlying condition
Fungal Nail Infections: Identification and Treatment
Fungal nail infections, also known as onychomycosis, are common nail problems that can affect both fingernails and toenails. These infections can vary in appearance and severity, making proper identification crucial for effective treatment.
How can you recognize a fungal nail infection? Common signs include:
- Thickening of the nail
- Discoloration (often yellow, brown, or white)
- Brittleness or crumbling of the nail
- Distortion of nail shape
- Foul odor
What factors increase the risk of developing a fungal nail infection?
- Warm, moist environments (e.g., sweaty shoes, public swimming pools)
- Walking barefoot in public areas
- Having athlete’s foot
- Weakened immune system
- Circulation problems
- Diabetes
Treatment Options for Fungal Nail Infections
Treating fungal nail infections can be challenging and often requires patience. What are the available treatment options for fungal nail infections?
- Topical antifungal medications: Applied directly to the nail
- Oral antifungal drugs: Prescribed for more severe or resistant infections
- Laser therapy: A newer treatment option that uses light to eliminate fungus
- Nail removal: In extreme cases, temporary or permanent nail removal may be necessary
How long does it take to treat a fungal nail infection? Treatment duration can vary significantly, often lasting several months to a year. Complete nail replacement with healthy growth is necessary for full resolution.
Nail Problems Related to Systemic Health Conditions
Nail changes can sometimes be indicators of underlying health issues. Recognizing these changes can lead to early detection and treatment of various systemic conditions.
What health conditions can manifest through nail changes?
- Psoriasis: Can cause pitting, thickening, and discoloration of nails
- Eczema: May lead to brittle, thin, or ridged nails
- Diabetes: Can affect nail growth and increase risk of fungal infections
- Liver disease: May cause clubbing of nails or Terry’s nails (white nails with dark rim)
- Kidney disease: Can result in half-and-half nails (Lindsay’s nails)
- Anemia: May cause pale or whitish nail beds
- Heart conditions: Can lead to clubbing or cyanosis of nails
When to Seek Medical Attention
While many nail changes are harmless, some may require professional evaluation. When should you consult a healthcare provider about nail changes?
- Persistent discoloration without apparent cause
- Sudden changes in nail shape or texture
- Signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus)
- Pain or discomfort associated with nail changes
- Nail changes accompanied by other systemic symptoms
Preventing Nail Damage and Maintaining Healthy Nails
Maintaining healthy nails involves a combination of good hygiene practices and proper care. By following some simple guidelines, you can significantly reduce the risk of nail problems and promote overall nail health.
What are the key steps to maintaining healthy nails?
- Keep nails clean and dry
- Trim nails regularly and properly
- Moisturize nails and cuticles
- Wear protective gloves when using harsh chemicals
- Avoid biting nails or picking at cuticles
- Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals
- Stay hydrated
- Limit use of nail polish and artificial nails
Nail Care Tips for Special Populations
Certain groups may need to take extra precautions to maintain nail health. What additional nail care measures should be taken by individuals with specific health concerns?
- Diabetics: Regular inspection of nails for signs of infection or injury
- Those with circulation problems: Extra care to avoid injuries and maintain warmth
- Individuals with weakened immune systems: Vigilance against fungal infections
- Older adults: Regular moisturizing and gentle care to prevent brittleness
By understanding the various aspects of nail health and implementing proper care techniques, most individuals can maintain strong, healthy nails. However, persistent problems or changes should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out underlying health issues and ensure appropriate treatment.

Topic Overview
Minor fingernail and toenail problems are common. At one time or another, almost everyone has caught a nail on something, causing it to rip, or has smashed a finger in a door, leaving blood under the nail. These kinds of injuries can be quite painful but are usually not serious. You can often relieve pain and prevent infection of minor nail problems at home.
Normally, fingernails grow about one-tenth of a millimeter each day. Toenails grow at about one-half or one-third the rate of the fingernails. Aging and diseases that decrease blood flow to the hands and feet may slow nail growth.
Common nail changes include:
- Splitting, peeling, or brittle nails. These are common problems that develop when your hands are frequently exposed to water, strong soaps, and other chemicals. You may be able to prevent some of these problems if you use lotion and avoid repeatedly putting your hands in water.
- Color changes.
- Little white marks (leukonychia) often appear after minor injuries. They may last for weeks or months and usually go away on their own.
- It is common for a nail to turn black after an injury. The black or purple-black color is caused by blood under the nail and will go away as the injury heals.
- Black, brown, or purple discoloration under a nail that has not been injured may be caused by melanoma.
- Changes in the shape or texture of nails, which may occur for a variety of reasons. Some nail changes, such as the formation of ridges, are normal with aging. Thick, brittle, or dark nails are more common in older adults who have poor circulation.
- Ingrown nails, which are often caused by improper trimming, tight shoes, or heredity. Your nails may grow into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and infection. In rare cases, an abscess may develop under a nail (subungual abscess).
- Separation from the nail bed. Once your nail separates from its nail bed, for whatever reason, it will not reattach. Nails grow back slowly. It takes about 6 months for fingernails and up to 18 months for toenails to grow back attached to the nail bed.
- Infection and allergic reactions. These are common problems caused by artificial nails.
- Fungal nail infections, which can vary in appearance depending on the type of fungus infecting the nail or the location of the infection. It is not unusual for fungal nail infections to follow athlete’s foot infections. For more information, see the topic Fungal Nail Infections.
Nail problems can also be caused by:
- An injury to a nail.
- Hangnails, which may lead to a minor infection next to your nails (paronychia), causing the skin around the nails to become swollen and tender.
- Nail-biting, which can lead to fingertips that are red and sore and cuticles that bleed. Nail-biting also increases the chance of bacterial infections around your nail beds and in your mouth.
- Side effects of medicines, such as chemotherapy and antimalarial medicines.
- Diseases of the skin, such as psoriasis and eczema.
- Skin growths, such as warts, cysts, and moles.
- Other diseases such as Addison’s disease, peripheral arterial disease, and HIV infection.

Symptoms to watch for during home treatment
Call your doctor if any of the following occur during home treatment:
- Signs of infection develop.
- Symptoms become more severe or frequent despite home treatment.
Prevention
To prevent common nail problems:
- Apply hand cream frequently throughout the day. Be sure to massage the cream into the nail and cuticle.
- Wear gloves when you are working in your garden or when the weather turns cold.
- Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves or disposable plastic gloves to protect your hands from overexposure to water, detergents, and other chemicals.
- Trim your fingernails weekly, after bathing, when they are softer.
- Do not trim nails too short.
- Use an emery board and sharp manicure scissors or clippers to trim your fingernails. Nails that are smooth and well-cared for are less likely to become damaged.
- Trim toenails monthly, after bathing.
- Cut them straight across and leave the nails a little longer at the corners so that the sharp ends don’t cut into your skin.
- If you have a chronic disease, such as diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, or a disease that causes problems with your immune system, discuss with your doctor the best way to trim your toenails before trimming them yourself.
- Be especially careful when trimming your baby’s nails.
- Avoid trimming your cuticles. Even a minor cut alongside your nail can cause infection.
- Do not bite or pick at your nails.
To prevent a fungal nail infection:
- Keep your feet clean and dry. Dry feet are less likely to become infected. Apply powder to your feet when needed.
- Wear clean, dry socks. Change your socks once a day or more frequently if they become wet.
- Wear roomy shoes that allow air to circulate around your feet.
- Wear shower sandals or shower shoes when you use public pools, spas, and showers.
To prevent problems with artificial nails:
- Test for a reaction to the artificial nail by having just one nail applied. Wait several days to see whether redness, itching, pain, or rash around or under the nail or separation of the nail from the nail bed develops.
- Do not apply an artificial nail if the nail or the skin around the nail looks irritated or infected.
- If an artificial nail does separate from the nail bed, dip your fingertip into rubbing alcohol for 15 seconds before reattaching the artificial nail. This will clean the space between the nails.
- Do not wear artificial nails for longer than 3 months at a time. Give your natural nails a month to rest before reapplying artificial nails.

4 Health Secrets That Could Be Hiding in Your Nails
- Your fingernails can tell you a lot about your health.
- Unusual colors or textures could signal low oxygen levels, poor nutrition, or even arsenic poisoning.
- Deep ridges or white spots on your nails are completely harmless and normal.
LoadingSomething is loading.
For some people, painted nails are a form of creative self-expression. But that nail polish may be hiding important information about an individual’s health.
Nail have the primary purpose of protecting a person’s fingers and toes. The white tips of your nails are dead, which is why you’re able to trim the ends of your nails without pain. But the rest of the structure is still alive, so a cut to the cuticle can sting quite a bit.
Your nails are made of a plate-like structure of specialized cells that grows out of a deep groove in the skin’s dermis. The top of the nail is known as the nail plate, and the skin underneath is called the nail bed.
Sometimes, an abnormal appearance or growth of the nail can signify underlying health conditions. Here are a few warning signs to look out for next time your nails are bare.
Discoloration could indicate an infection or fungus
Yellow spots and thick nails may be proof of fungus.
Jan-Schneckenhaus/Getty Images
A mostly white appearance with darker rims — known as Terry’s nails — can be a sign of liver disease, kidney failure, or heart conditions, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, a few white spots should not raise concern. Sometimes an injury to the nail bed results in this common condition, which is also known as leukonychia.
Yellow nails most commonly occur due to fungal infection, but they may signal thyroid disease or psoriasis in rare cases. Of course, nails can also yellow from nail polish stains, so it could be a simple manicure issue. Retracted nail beds and thick, crumbly nail growth are more signs of a fungus.
You fingernails might turn blue in reaction to cold temperatures, or it could be the result of cyanosis, a condition in which red blood cells lack oxygen. If your blue nails are accompanied by dizziness or shortness of breath, a trip to the doctor to measure your blood oxygen levels may be in order.
Lastly, a greenish hue could indicate something known as green nail syndrome. People who have a loose nail bed and those who work in damp environments are particularly susceptible to under-nail growth of a bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Fortunately, the telltale color makes this infection easy to diagnose, and it typically responds well to treatment with
antibiotics

Unusual textures and shapes may be a side effect of nutritional deficiency
Vertical nail ridges are fairly common.
whitemay/Getty Images
Nails can take on some pretty gnarly shapes — just look up some images of ram’s horn nails for proof.
This condition, also known as onychogryphosis, is marked by a thick, curling overgrowth of the nail that resembles a ram’s horn. The condition may result as a side effect of diseases such as psoriasis or hystrix, or it can develop over time in individuals who are unable to care for their nails. Typically, a podiatrist will use a laser to cut off the growth or remove the nail entirely.
More subtle textural changes could also indicate a problem. Although vertical nail ridges are a normal part of nail growth, horizontal ridges may be a cause for concern. These deep grooves, also known as Beau’s lines, can occur as a side effect of chemotherapy, or they may signal unmet nutritional needs or infection in the nail plate. You can consult a clinician or dermatologist to learn more about the underlying cause of these lines.
An abnormally round, bulbous nail shape can also signal health issues such as lung cancer, intestinal disorders, or endocrine disease, according to the medical journal Lung India. People who experience “digital clubbing” may want to see a physician to check for the presence of an underlying condition.
White or dark lines may be harmless — or a sign of poisoning
Little white spots, known as leukonychia, are probably benign.
Nadya So/Getty Images
Short white lines are likely harmless leukonychia spots, but longer or growing lines could indicate a problem.
Muehrcke’s lines, white lines that traverse the entire width of the nail bed, are associated with conditions such as kidney failure, sickle cell anemia, and a vitamin deficiency called pellagra.
A white line that grows out with the nail — known as Mees’ line — is most commonly associated with arsenic or thallium poisoning. They can also appear in patients who recently had chemotherapy or kidney failure.
Dark stripes, known as linear melanonychia, may also run down the nail lengthwise. These are normal for many people, especially people of color, but irregular pigmentation could also be a sign of infection or skin cancer.
Chronic split nails are more than just an annoyance
There’s a reason your nails keep cracking.
clavivs/Getty Images
The condition onycholysis, which Mayo Clinic describes as fingernails separating from the nail bed, can lead to potential injury, infection, or even drug reactions.
Similarly, brittle nails that tend to split are a potential area of worry. An iron deficiency may be causing the brittleness, or it’s also possible that you’re simply wetting and drying your nails too often. In this case, taking the time to care for your nails and wearing gloves while working in damp conditions can help protect them.

Psoriatic Arthritis Nail Changes: Symptoms and Treatments
If you have psoriatic arthritis (PsA), chances are good that it’s affected your nails. Not only is nail psoriasis an early sign of PsA, it’s the most common symptom of the disease. Psoriatic arthritis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that occurs in some people with psoriasis, a condition that causes the overproduction of skin cells, which often results in dry red patches with thick silvery scales.
Up to nearly 90 percent of people with PsA have nail involvement. “Both fingernails and toenails can be affected, and it can affect one nail or all 20 nails,” says Mona Gohara, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine. But considering how distorted nails can become when you have psoriatic arthritis, even one affected nail can be one too many.
Symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis on Your Nails
1. Pitting of the nail
These depressions on the nail are the most common symptom of PsA, occurring in more than two-thirds of people with the disease, according to the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance. They can be small and shallow or big and deep.
2. Onycholysis
This is the gradual (and, thankfully, painless) separation of a nail from the underlying nail bed. The pocket created can form a pathway for bacteria or fungi to infect the nail bed. About one-third of people with nail psoriasis develop a fungal infection.
3. Subungual (meaning underneath a finger or toenail) hyperkeratosis
The buildup of skin cells creates a flaky or chalky substance (doctors often refer to it as debris) that accumulates under the nail. It’s more of an issue in toenails because the constant pressure from wearing shoes can become uncomfortable.
4. Ridging
Inflammation of the matrix, the area at the base of the nail where the cells that produce new nail growth are produced, can cause these grooves and ridges that run lengthwise and are known as Beau’s lines. They usually occur on every fingernail or toenail.
5. Thickening
Skin and nails are made of the same protein, so the rapid, excess growth of skin cells can also cause nails to grow too quickly and/or too thickly.
6. Crumbling
Long-term inflammation of the nail matrix can lead to a crumbly appearance.
7. Color changes
White, yellow, or brown discoloration and/or reddish marks (aka splinter hemorrhages, which are caused by tiny burst blood vessels under the nails) are common among people with psoriatic arthritis.
The good news is that there are many treatments for nail psoriasis: The two mainstays are topical steroids and the vitamin D-based treatment calcipotriene. Treatments like biologics and retinoids — which work throughout the body — can also treat both your skin and nails.
The bad news is that treating nail psoriasis can be tough as, well, nails. The condition can be stubborn, so you may need to use more than one treatment. Nails also grow slowly, so even if a treatment works, it can take a while — up to a full year for fingernails, and two years for toenails, to grow out — before you’ll see the full benefit. That can be a long time to wait when your nails look distorted.
But besides being patient, there’s a lot you can do to help protect nails from damage and improve their appearance.
How to Care for Your Nails with Psoriatic Arthritis
1. Keep nails short
Damage or injury to the nails can cause or worsen nail psoriasis. Any sort of physical trauma can lead to what’s called the Koebner phenomenon. This is when you get a flare where the skin or nail has been injured. Keeping nails short can minimize trauma from everyday tasks. It can also help prevent nails from lifting off of fingers and toes and discourage buildup under the nails.
2. Wear gloves when working with your hands
This includes housework, yard work, and home repairs. Any time you irritate your skin or nails, psoriasis can flare. When doing wet work like washing dishes, it’s best to wear a cotton glove and then place a vinyl or nitrile (synthetic rubber) glove over it. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, latex gloves don’t give your nails enough protection. Keeping nails dry can also make infections less likely.
3. Go au naturel
“‘Fancy nails’ like acrylic, gel, or artificial nails, are traumatic for nails,” says Dr. Gohara. “They grind down your nails to apply them and use harsh chemicals to remove them, both of which can damage your nail.” Don’t create more damage than you need to.
4. Disguise nail damage safely
Nail polish and/or a nail hardener can be used to conceal pitting and other signs of psoriasis and help to protect nails, just check with your doctor first to be sure they’re appropriate for your nails.
5. Leave cuticles alone
Cutting or pushing back cuticles can injure your skin or lead to an infection. Ditto biting or picking at your nails.
6. Resist cleaning under nails
Removing the buildup can loosen nails and increase your risk of getting an infection. With treatment, the buildup should gradually clear. In the meantime, soaking the affected nails in soapy warm water may be sufficient to remove the debris.

What is onychomycosis (fungal nail infection)?
Onychomycosis (also known as tinea unguium) is a fungal nail infection which can affect the toenails and/or fingernails and which occurs in about 10 percent of adults in the United States.Onychomycosis more commonly affects toenails rather than fingernails.
There are several different types of fungal nail infection, depending on the kind of fungus causing the infection. Onychomycosis or infected nails are most often caused by a type of parasitic fungi called dermatophyte fungi.
Most types of onychomycosis have the same signs of infection: the infected nail usually becomes thick and discoloured. This process generally starts at the tip of the nail and progresses downwards towards the root.
As the infection progresses, the affected nail can become itchy and/or slightly painful. Infected nails may become crumbly, and it is not uncommon for part or all of the infected nail to break off. Treatment usually involves keeping the nail clean and taking a course of topical antifungal (antimycotic) medication.
Symptoms of fungal nail infection
The first signs of a fungal nail infection are usually perceptible changes to the appearance of the infected nail(s). It is uncommon for an infected nail to cause severe pain or permanent disfigurement, but this does occur in some cases. If left untreated, fungal nail infections can cause difficulties with walking, exercising or manual tasks such as typing. The main symptoms of onychomycosis include the nail becoming:
- Brittle
- Broken
- Discolored
- Thickened
- Flaky
- Lifted away from the nail bed
- Mildly painful
- Separated from the nail bed
These symptoms could also indicate that an individual is suffering from nail psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune skin disease which can affect the skin under the nail. Nail psoriasis is more common in the fingernails than the toenails and can co-occur with fungal infections of the nail. If you think you may be experiencing the first signs of nail psoriasis or a fungal nail infection, get a free symptom assessment by downloading the Ada app.
Good to know: In people with diabetes, fungal toenail infections can increase the likelihood of developing ulceration and other complications, so medical attention should always be sought if a fungal nail infection is suspected.
Types of onychomycosis
Onychomycosis or tinea unguium is usually caused by a buildup of dermatophyte fungi. These are parasitic fungi infecting the skin and nails, which need to reside in human or animal bodies in order to survive. Fungal infections of the nail are caused when dermatophytes burrow under the nails to breed.
Specific types of dermatophytes which commonly cause fungal nail infections include the trichophyton rubrum, the most common type of fungus to infect the nails, and trichophyton interdigitale fungi. Other fungi which can cause fungal nail infections include yeasts, such as the candida albicans and molds, such as scopulariopsis brevicaulis.
What is proximal subungual onychomycosis?
Proximal subungual onychomycosis is the rarest form of fungal nail infection.
Infection usually involves the trichophyton rubrum fungus. Unlike in other kinds of fungal nail infection, infection occurs, initially, at the proximal nail fold (the base of the nail), spreading up the newly developed nail plate.
The proximal subungual form of fungal nail infection usually occurs in people whose immune system is compromised. Proximal subungual onychomycosis is a clinical marker for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Triggers
Wearing tight-fitting socks and shoes, which cause repetitive trauma to the toenails, is a primary cause of fungal nail infections. Onychomycosis is therefore common in people who play a lot of sport, as well as the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system.
Moist, damp environments serve as breeding grounds for dermatophytes. Healthy people typically catch nail infections from visiting places such as:
- Communal showers
- Nail salons and/or foot spas with poorly-cleaned instruments
- Public swimming pools, jacuzzis and saunas
Diagnosis
If somebody is suffering from a suspected fungal nail infection, it is advisable to visit the doctor so that they can advise on a treatment plan for the infected nail(s). Fungal nail infections are diagnosed based on the visible symptoms.
Samples of nail clippings are usually sent away for a histopathology examination, the analysis of diseased tissue, in order to identify the presence of dermatophytes and decide on appropriate medication. There is a 30 percent possibility of false negatives when testing for dermatophyte cultures, so it is possible that the test may need to be repeated.
Treatment
Fungal nail infections do not go away on their own, so a course of treatment is always required. This usually involves a combined approach of keeping the affected nails clean to reduce irritation and inflammation, at the same time as following a course of antifungal medication. Onychomycosis is highly infectious, so it is important to begin treatment as soon as possible to minimise the risk of passing the infection to others.
Prevention and management
There are various precautions that one can take in order to reduce the risk of spreading fungal nail infections to others and to increase the chances of a quick recovery. To look after one’s nails and prevent the spread of infection, it is recommended that one:
- Change one’s socks and shoes regularly
- Dries one’s hands and feet as soon as possible after exposure to water
- Files one’s nails to keep the edges smooth
- Moisturise one’s hands, nails and cuticles daily and after contact with liquids
- Select shoes and socks made of natural materials, such as cotton
- Treat skin infections like athlete’s foot promptly to avoid the infection reaching the nails
- Trim one’s nails regularly
- Use separate scissors or clippers to tend to infected nails
- Wear clean, comfortable shoes
- Wear gloves for housework and other manual tasks
Medications
In addition to keeping the site of the infection clean, someone affected by a fungal nail infection may be prescribed topical antimycotics, i.e.antifungal products to apply to the affected area. Topical medications are currently the first-line treatment for fungal nail infections.
Topical medications used to treat fungal nail infections
These include:
- Amorolfine nail lacquer
- Tioconazole nail solution
- Ciclopirox
Always use topical antifungal products according to a doctor’s advice and/or follow the guidelines on the packet.
In some cases, all or part of the infected nail may be removed, in order to give the topical medications the best chance to work. This treatment is usually recommended for severe or persistent nail infections. It can be carried out during a regular appointment at the doctor’s office. If the nail is removed surgically, a local anaesthetic will be applied to the affected area before the infected part of the nail is removed.
An advantage of surgical removal is that it can be carried out in one appointment, and the course of topical antimycotic medication can then be started. Alternatively, a dressing containing urea can be applied to the affected nail. This must be kept dry for 10 days, during which time the urea will soften the nail, so that it can be removed painlessly by the doctor during a follow-up appointment.
After the nail is removed, topical medications can then be applied. The infection is considered to have cleared up when the new, healthy nail starts to show visible regrowth in the nail bed.
Onychomycosis FAQs
Q: Are there oral medications for fungal nail infections?
A: Oral medications will only be prescribed to treat onychomycosis in cases where topical treatments and self-care alone have been prescribed and have not proven effective in curing the infection. Oral medications for fungal nail infections can cause side effects, which include itching, headaches, diarrhea and a decreased sense of taste.
The most common oral antimycotics for onychomycosis are itraconazole and terbinafine, which work by gradually killing the fungi that caused the infection. The doctor will assess a person’s medical history before prescribing these medications, as they may not be suitable for everyone. People who have had liver problems should avoid terbinafine. Itraconazole has been linked to compromised heart function and may react with other medications, including pimozide, quinidine, dofetilide and levacetylmethadol (levomethadyl).
Q: Is it always possible to cure onychomycosis?
A: Onychomycosis can take a long time to treat, and some fungal nail infections can be resistant to antifungal medications. Treating a fungal nail infection can depend on identifying the appropriate medication that is effective against a particular subtype of infection.
Q: Can nail polish cause onychomycosis?
A: Nail polish is a sealant, so it can cause a buildup of moisture behind the nail, potentially creating an environment in which dermatophytes and other microorganisms can thrive. Avoiding nail polish is recommended while undergoing treatment for onychomycosis, as it could reduce the effectiveness of the antifungal medication. Furthermore, the applicator brush could be a vehicle for spreading infectious microorganisms.
Q: What are the main methods for removing a fungal nail?
A: Fungal nails can be removed surgically, using a tool to loosen the skin around the nail and remove the nail after a local anaesthetic is applied to the affected area to prevent pain. If the whole nail is removed, this is called avulsion. If part of the nail is removed, this is called debridement.
Alternatively, the nail can be removed chemically (non-surgically) by placing a dressing containing urea on the nail. This must be kept dry for 10 days after which the nail is softened to the point where it can be removed painlessly by the doctor.
Good to know: It is also possible to treat a fungal nail infection by removing the infected nail using a laser. However, laser treatment for onychomycosis is not usually considered, other than in cases where antifungal medication has been ineffective.
Q: Are fungal nail infections contagious?
A: Fungal nail infections can be passed from one infected nail to another due to direct or indirect contact. For example, toes which are next to one another on the foot may rub together, causing the fungi to spread to skin and infect other nearby nails. A person may also spread their fungal nail infection from one infected nail to other nails by touching it with their hands before touching other areas of the feet or hands and/or through the use of implements which touch multiple fingers or toes, such as nail files or nail polish brushes. People risk catching tinea unguium from one another when they share implements such as these, use public foot-baths or foot-spas, or share shoes or socks.
Q: What are the best home remedies to treat a fungal nail infection?
A: No home remedies for fungal nail infections are currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, many people report success in reducing the severity of their fungal infection, or curing it altogether by using herbal remedies with antifungal properties, including:
Applying products containing tea tree oil to the affected nail plate(s) and surrounding skin
Taking herbal supplements and vitamins, as vitamin deficiencies, in particular being deficient in the B vitamin biotin, can lead to fungal nail infections. If you think you may be affected by a vitamin deficiency, assess your symptoms for free by downloading the Ada app
Topical creams and rubs containing ingredients such as menthol, eucalyptus oil, camphor and thymol have been found to treat or cure onychomycosis, in particular, ointments which are traditionally used for decongestion. However, their use in the treatment of fungal nail infections is a recent trend and is not universally medically accepted or FDA-approved.
Q: What is the difference between onychomycosis and onycholysis?
A: Although onychomycosis and onycholysis sound similar and are both conditions that affect the nails, these two terms have slightly different meanings:
The definition of onycholysis is the separation of the nail from the skin, which can happen due to a variety of causes, including a single injury or a repetitive trauma, allergic reactions to chemicals such as household cleaning products or nail polish, or as a result of having a fungal nail infection. The definition of onychomycosis is a fungal nail infection. This may or may not eventually result in onycholysis if the infected nail becomes sufficiently damaged that it crumbles and breaks away from the skin.
Q: Do fungal nail infections cause pus?
A: The appearance of pus near the nails is more commonly associated with bacterial infections rather than fungal ones. Pus around the nails may indicate that a person is affected by a condition called paronychia, an infection of the skin beside the nail, most often developing in the nail fold. A bacterium called Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause.

Your nails say a lot about your general health, and even small changes in their appearance can reveal more than you think.
Most nail changes aren’t caused by anything serious, but some can suggest that you have low levels of certain vitamins or minerals, or an underlying condition that needs medical attention.
Heart, lung and thyroid disease are just some of the more serious conditions your nails can provide clues about.
But to spot these clues, you’ll need to know what healthy nails look like and the changes that suggest that something may be wrong.
Signs you have healthy nails
Healthy nails are even in colour, free of any pits or grooves, and feel smooth to the touch.
But if they become dry, brittle or change colour, something may be wrong with your nails or your overall health.
When nail changes are nothing to worry about
Some nail changes can be harmless. For example, there’s usually no need to worry about:
- white spots or streaks – these can often be caused by injury
- darker lines running down the nail
- brittle nails – this can be due to ageing or long-term exposure to water, nail polish or chemical cleaning products
Nails can look and feel different depending on the time of year (they may be more dry during the colder months) and how old you are. But if you notice a sudden change in a nail or the skin around your nail becomes red or swollen, get it checked by a doctor.
It’s also normal for your nails to change during the course of your life. For example, nails may:
- become softer, harder or more brittle during pregnancy
- break more easily as you get older
- change colour or even fall off after injury (such as catching your nail in a door)
If you do lose a nail after an injury, it can take up to 6 months for a fingernail to grow back and 18 months for a toenail to do the same. If an injured nail hasn’t grown back after this time, see a doctor.
When to see a doctor about your nails
Nail health is linked to how well your body is functioning and changes in your body can sometimes be seen in them.
So, what type of changes should you look out for?
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- white or spoon-shaped nails – this can be a sign of iron-deficiency anaemia. Check to see if the inside of your lower eyelids are also pale as this may mean that your body is making fewer red blood cells because your iron levels are low
- thickened or discoloured (white, black, yellow or green) nails – this may be caused by a fungal nail infection
- pitting – small dents on the surface of the nails can indicate:
- psoriasis (a skin condition that causes red, crusty areas to form on the skin)
- a type of eczema called pompholyx (a condition that causes small blisters on the skin)
See a doctor if you notice a change in the texture, colour, thickness or shape of any of your nails and you’re not sure why.
Also see a doctor if any of your nails fall off unexpectedly. It’s natural for a toenail to change colour and drop off if you’ve injured it, but a healthy nail shouldn’t fall off for no reason. If it does, this may be a sign of a health condition.

Nail Disease – Mohave DermatologyMohave Dermatology
Nail diseases are typically categorized as fungal infections. In scientific terms, they are referred to as tinea unguium or onychomycosis. Both fingernails and toenails can become affected by nail conditions. In the United States, about one in 10 people are affected by some nail disease. Older individuals are at higher risk of developing these problems.
At Mohave Dermatology, we offer top-notch nail disease treatments. Our expert team is here to help you understand what causes these infections, what your treatment options are, and how best you can manage them.
What is Nail Disease?
Your nails protect the tissues of your fingers & toes. They’re made up of layers of keratin, (hardened protein) that is also present in our skin and hair. The overall health of your nails can also be an indication of your physical health. Healthy nails are generally consistent in color and have smooth surfaces. Nail diseases can alter the condition and appearance of your nails.
Nail diseases are deformities of the fingernails and toenails. In most cases, these are fungal infections, and the symptoms can vary significantly. However, the common symptoms of nail disease include:
- Nail soreness or pain
- A distorted appearance
- Yellowish streaks
- Bleeding around nails
- Thickened nails
- Pitted nails
- Nail darkening
- Brittleness
- Foul smelling nails
- Separation of nails from the nail bed
The Causes of Nail Infections
Nail disorders are caused by several different fungi, as the pathogens infiltrate the skin through minute openings between the nail bed and the nail itself. If the surrounding spots are unventilated, moist and warm, it doesn’t take long for the fungi to propagate. Some of the other factors that can give rise to nail infections include:
- Profuse sweating
- Walking barefoot in outdoor/public areas
- Family history
- Poor health
- Poor circulation
- Conditions like diabetes

90,000 cuticle, tip, nail plate and well.
Nails are a part of our body that protects the delicate tips of our fingers and is an important part of the appearance of any person. Let’s consider in more detail the structure of the nail, its constituent parts.
Interesting Facts:
1) Faster nail growth:
- girls than boys
- in summer than in autumn, spring or winter
- if you are right-handed, then on the right hand, otherwise vice versa
2) The nail plate is completely renewed in 5 months.
3) The thickness of the nail in a normal healthy state is 0.3 mm.
What is a nail matrix and substrate?
The structure of the nail is a seal of keratin horny tissue, sufficiently flexible and durable. Epidermal cells are formed at the root together with various mineral salts – sulfur, selenium, calcium and potassium – to form a healthy new nail.
The matrix of the nail – the part that is responsible for the production of new tissues of the nail plate is located at its base.It is from the matrix that growth begins. The following process takes place: new cells of the nail develop, which, with their pressure, push forward the old ones, which forms the nail plate. It is on these new cells that the future state of the new nail depends. The matrix is nourished by many blood vessels, which with blood flow enrich it with all the vitamins and minerals necessary for the health of the nail. The matrix itself is very sensitive, therefore, as a result of any mechanical damage to it, normal growth may be disrupted.
Nail substrate is an extension of the matrix that supports the plate and largely determines the color and overall health of the nail. This plate is connected to the substrate by small connecting cells. At the tip of the nail, the plate is, as it were, detached from the substrate, which makes it possible to form a free edge of various lengths.
Nail hole and plate!
Nail lune – a part that looks like a crescent moon and differs slightly in color from the nail plate itself in its pallor. The lune is especially well expressed on the base of the thumb, and on the little finger, on the contrary, it is almost invisible.
The nail plate is the visible part that is located between the well and the free edge of the nail and is a dead keratin layer. It consists of compressed cells that were previously produced in the nail matrix and is not sensitive to external stimuli, since it does not contain blood vessels or even nerve endings. It is usually pale in color, but can vary from white to bluish depending on the ambient temperature and other external factors. The plate consists of three layers, separated by a small amount of fat and water:
- outer, hardest;
- inner, which is supported by the backing, is the softest;
- and medium.
Free edge and cuticle of the nail.
The tip or free edge of the nail is the part of the nail plate that protrudes above the base of the finger. But how far and in what form is a matter of taste. This is the most vulnerable part of the nail and breaks easily.
The cuticle is the rim of the skin that surrounds the nail plate, which serves as a protective function for the hardened part. The cuticle is constantly renewed and requires maintenance. It hermetically seals the nail liner and matrix from air and water. The new cuticle is quite soft and can grow into the nail plate, which can easily lead to the fact that it becomes ugly, but most importantly, it can cause cuticle breaks and form barbs and even interfere with normal nail growth.
Nail health is largely determined by proper nutrition and good care. With a vegetative diet, the nails may weaken due to a lack of animal fats and proteins. Not in the best way affects the health of nails and unbalanced diets aimed at losing weight. The recovery period after this can be quite long. Therefore, only timely intervention at the first signs of a change in the condition of the nails will help keep them healthy and beautiful.
Well, have you figured it out? Now you can relax and read thematic laughing :

Beautiful French manicure
French manicure is considered a classic of the genre. He is neat, handsome and truly considered the epitome of femininity. It is easiest to create beautiful 2020 nail designs with it.The traditional combination of white and transparent base color adds lightness and charm to the image. Such a manicure is suitable for young flirtatious women of fashion and respectable older ladies.
We propose to analyze an important question: how to choose the main (base) color of varnish for French manicure. Stylists offer the following solution scheme:
The combination of French manicure with additional decor and mixing techniques is still relevant. To create a delicate and light image, choose a small and neat piece of jewelry. For example, a pair of rhinestones or beads, a small drawing, an unobtrusive pattern, spraying with sequins, colored sand or powder.
It is worth noting that a jacket makes any nails visually longer. Therefore, the opinion that it should be done exclusively for a great length is erroneous. Do you want to look irresistible, stylish and attractive? Opt for a feminine French manicure.
What to draw on your nails?
If a monochromatic coating is boring and you want to create a truly beautiful manicure with an unusual decoration, then the drawing will have to be in place. The most popular solution is to apply the image to one or two nails. Then the manicure turns out to be beautiful and neat. We have prepared a list of manicure drawings for you. Check it out if the right idea never comes up.
- Geometric patterns, straight and broken lines, ovals, triangles, rhombuses.
- Flowers, plants, leaves, twigs.
- Abstraction, rock paintings.
- Eyes, eyelashes, lips, kiss mark.
- Patterns, lace.
- Butterflies, birds.
- Animal paw prints.
- Characters of cartoons and fairy tales, anime.
- Clouds, raindrops.
Life Hacks:
Attach the polish on the tip. This simple life hack is great for keeping your nails going for a long time! When applying a coating to your nails, stretch it not only to the very edge, but also, as it were, tuck under it.
Use cuticle oil. It perfectly cares, nourishes and moisturizes. Thanks to its regular action, the condition of the fingers will noticeably improve, the growth of the cuticle will slow down.
Use basecoat. Its application will promote better adhesion of the coating to the nail. Thanks to this, the manicure will look beautiful longer than usual!
Form matters. To increase the longevity of your manicure, choose an oval nail shape. It is natural and the most durable. The oval is less prone to chips and bends. Nails of this particular shape remain in good condition longer than others.

100 BEST ideas and trends in the photo
The world of nail art does not stand still and every year new trends appear that find a response in the hearts of real women of fashion. Of course, not every one of the options presented can be called really beautiful. Some of them look quite extravagant and are suitable exclusively for events or shows. But nevertheless, in 2018, no one forbids experimenting, leaving your comfort zone and trying something new for yourself. And about what design options are considered the most beautiful, we suggest talking right now.
Nail design: trends and fashion news 2018
First of all, we note that in 2018, marigolds of a natural, natural shape with a light coating are still relevant. But this does not mean at all that extravagant or rather bold decisions will be banned. The main thing is to study all the new items and trends so that the design is fashionable in a particular season.
Monochrome coating
Of course, many might say that this solution is too simple and boring. It’s hard to argue with this, but nevertheless, this is the option that girls most often choose. The fact is that it is simple, concise, discreet and ideal for working in an office with a not too strict dress code. Moreover, it is not at all necessary to choose a beige tone, because there are many very different shades. In 2018, we recommend taking a closer look at pastel colors and contrasting colors.
If you wish, you can use additional decor in the form of rhinestones, sparkles, sequins or kamifubuki. They all look interesting in their own way.
“Broken glass”
Every fashionista knows about the existence of a decor called “broken glass”. This is not surprising, because it can be used to transform even a simple one-color coating. Moreover, you can use it at home. The main thing is to practice a little and then everything will definitely work out.
Most often, “broken glass” is used to cover one or two marigolds. Due to this, it has a mirror-like appearance. The decor in the form of particles of this foil of various sizes and shapes looks no less attractive. Thus, the marigold will flicker as soon as the sun’s rays fall on it.
Geometric Design
It’s hard to argue with the claim that geometric design is considered the biggest hit of 2018. This is true, because it is these drawings that are as versatile as possible and suitable for any occasion and season. It is chosen as a complement to light pastel finishes, as well as an accent for festive, intense designs. In addition, the geometry looks great on both short and long nails.
For those who have been choosing such a pattern for a long time, we recommend paying attention to the design called “negative space”. It looks very unusual, but at the same time attractive. This option will definitely appeal to fashionistas and those who follow trends in the world of manicure.
“Cat’s eye”
The design called “cat’s eye” is familiar to every fashionista. The thing is that it has not been relevant for the first year and still retains a leading position. Most often it is chosen for the autumn-winter season, since most of the varnishes presented have dark, rich, deep tones. Therefore, it is ideal for an evening out or celebration.
Choosing a gel polish, you will get a long-lasting manicure for several weeks. But if desired, it can be realized even at home using a special varnish with metal particles. To do this, you just need to apply it and bring the magnet very close. In just a few seconds, the drawing on the nails will appear.
French and moon manicure
Among the most beautiful nail designs, it is simply impossible not to mention the classic jacket and moon manicure. This is the most universal option for absolutely every girl, because there are a huge number of its types. For example, light, laconic designs are most often chosen as a wedding manicure. That is, it can be an emphasis on one or more marigolds.
As for manicure for office work, only the classics without decor and various patterns will be acceptable. If there are no strict rules, then you can add an accent in the form of a drawing or additional decor. This solution looks feminine and gentle.
For lovers of unusual combinations, we suggest making a bright, colorful performance of a classic design. In the spring-summer season, saturated tones of red, yellow, blue, purple and others will look great. In the fall-winter season, it is better to take a closer look at deep colors. For example, wine, dark blue, green. Such tones look luxurious even as basic ones for creating a jacket or moon manicure.
Gradient manicure
Manicure with an ombre effect also remains relevant. With its help, you can achieve a completely different visual effect on your nails. It all depends on the chosen shades and their quantity. Most often, craftsmen use two or three colors. However, it is not at all necessary to adhere to this rule.
According to experts in the nail industry, different tones of the same color or a combination of different shades look best. And it doesn’t matter at all whether the gradient is horizontal or vertical. Each option is interesting and attractive in its own way.In addition, they are perfect for those who want to visually lengthen the nail plate.
As for the decor, the ombre-effect manicure is rarely decorated, since it is quite active in itself. But nevertheless, if necessary, you can add something interesting. For example, a small amount of rhinestones, sequins or sequins.
The most beautiful nail designs in the photo
Today there are many stylish, original design options. It is simply impossible to single out the most beautiful of them. Therefore, we suggest looking at a selection of excellent manicure options.
The concept of the beautiful is very subjective. After all, it will be different for every girl. We can say for sure that in 2018 any experiments and even the most daring decisions are permissible. Therefore, choose interesting designs and do what you want.
The most beautiful nail design in 2020
The concept of the most beautiful manicure changes every year. For some girls, this is a restrained classic in the form of a French manicure.Others call a bright, catchy manicure with a decor in the form of rhinestones beautiful. In turn, for the third, a sophisticated minimalistic design will be more attractive. In 2020, all the facets of beauty are pretty blurry. Therefore, we have prepared fresh, stylish ideas, among which every girl can find something suitable.
The most beautiful nail design 2020
As mentioned above, the concept of the most beautiful design is rather vague and it will be different for each girl. That is why we propose to consider the most popular and at the same time attractive manicure options that remain relevant in 2020.
Marble manicure
Marble manicure has gained particular popularity this season. He is to the liking not only of those who like to experiment, but also of real shy women. The fact is that most often such a design is restrained, laconic and therefore perfect for both everyday life and work. By adding colored accents, you get a completely different, unusual pattern. In addition, due to the variety of application techniques, it can be done even at home.
Geometric manicure
For several years in a row, geometric manicure has remained a hit and the main trend of the year. This is not surprising, because it allows you to create not only stylish, minimalistic drawings, but also fairly voluminous images. In addition, there is a huge variety of options for combining lines and shapes, which allows for unique designs.
As for additional decor, it is rarely used. The fact is that geometric designs are often done in a minimalist style that does not imply decor. But still, it is worth considering each drawing separately. It is quite possible that in some cases it will be appropriate.
French and moon manicure
Some girls believe that the time of French and moon design is long gone and in general it looks trite. This is partly true, but in this case, what kind of pattern variation should be chosen plays an important role. After all, there are many fresh, original ideas that allow presenting a familiar solution as something new and rather unusual. For example, the combination of the two looks a little more interesting.
For those who want to achieve a fundamentally different vision of the jacket, we recommend changing it slightly. For example, shift the smile line or make it in a different color scheme. Also, if you wish, you can make a familiar design in a minimalist or geometric style. Agree, it looks really modern.
Ombre effect
An amazing combination of shades in one design always attracts attention. Most often, to create a gradient manicure, two or three colors are used in the same color scheme or contrasting ones. But there are other options with a much larger number of shades. Each of the options looks interesting in its own way.
If you wish, you can implement a more unusual idea. For example, make a gradient strip in the center of the marigold or a diagonal line. In fact, there are a lot of variations for creating a stylish design. The main thing is to start experimenting and trying something new.
Floral design
Floral designs are certainly among the most popular and attractive nail designs. It remains relevant regardless of the season, as it can be realized in any color scheme, as well as in any style. That is why brides often choose floral patterns for themselves.
But if desired, the floral pattern can be made a little more daring, bold, complementing with various rhinestones. The main thing is to choose the right color scheme so that everything goes well with each other.
“Broken glass”
The design with the effect of broken glass has remained relevant for many years. It is often chosen for festive occasions, as small pieces of foil create a rather strong sheen. It is also often combined with geometric patterns and a cat-eye finish. Each of the options is attractive in its own way and you should only choose based on your own desires.
“Cat’s Eye”
Unlike the previous versions, this design is most often chosen in the autumn-winter season. This is because the darker shades are much deeper, so the effect becomes more visible.By adding just a few rhinestones or sparkles, you can transform your manicure and make it a little more festive. Nevertheless, even a simple, monochromatic coating is a great option for everyday life.
The most beautiful design of short nails
If earlier it was believed that a beautiful design can only be done on long nails, now everything is a little different. Nail masters note that length is not at all important, the main thing is to choose the right shade and pattern. Then the nails will look really attractive and stylish. As for the additional decor, you can safely use it. But we are talking about a small amount. Otherwise, it may look ridiculous.
Stylish nail design ideas 2020
Fashion trends are constantly changing in the modern world. This applies not only to clothing, but also to the design of marigolds. Therefore, we have made a whole collection of original ideas. This will help you find the right solution and just be inspired if you prefer to do your manicure at home.
Among the variety of design options, it is difficult to choose the most beautiful one. Moreover, every girl puts her understanding of beauty into this. You should not chase all fashion trends, just follow your desires and choose the perfect design for yourself. Only in this case, the manicure will be a stylish addition to your look.

The 2021-2022 nail season demonstrates a unique combination of circumstances and trends, when the fashion dictate is not strong enough to rigidly define fashion trends, and nail design gains more creative freedom.Freed from a fairly rigid framework in the definitions of what is fashionable and what is not, the ideas of manicure 2021-2022 allowed creating impressive images. Photos – the novelties of the new season provide you with the opportunity to make a forecast: how expressive and promising the presented innovations of nail art are.
Manicure 2021-2022: fashion trends, main trends, photo ideas
Modern ideas that form fashion designer collections 2021-2022, proceed from the fact that nail design should ideally meet the following parameters: beauty and aesthetics , thoughtfulness and discreet serenity of charm. The tandem of practicality and feminine romance is becoming especially relevant. Taking into account these characteristic features that determine the fashionable manicure, new photos have been made, placed in this section:
• Attention to the aesthetics of women’s hands, in addition to the already mandatory thorough processing of the nail plate, is concentrated on the artistic design of the manicure. The manner of work of nail artists and their techniques for achieving the perfect manicure use the widest range of techniques, from monochrome to complex, pictorial images.
• New items that claim to be successful are made taking into account the principles of color. Photos of innovations in nail service are distinguished by calm, expressive colors, a combination of colors selected for the image. Deep blue, wine shades, muted pink-pearl combinations, classics of red, black, white and silver are at the peak of their popularity.
• Femininity and tenderness dominate in the stylist of nail images, which are embodied, among other things, with the help of jewelry that imitate jewelry lovely to a woman’s appearance, fascinate with shimmering sparkles and stunning beauty of iridescent colors.
• The nail design reinforced the fashion trend to decorate no more than one or two nails. Not only the nails of the ring finger can be accentuated. Increasingly, they decorate the nail plate of the thumb, little finger.
• The fashionable format is based on the natural shape and reasonable, no-frills and shocking length of the manicure. The current nail design prefers an oval, almond-shaped shape, is loyal to a square nail plate with smoothed corners, and accepts sharp extended nails, but provided that such a decision is justified and balanced.
Design of nails with a pattern: fashionable photo novelties 2021-2022
No matter how fashion trends change in the history of nail art, accompanied by revolutionary and violent changes, nail design with a pattern has always remained the embodiment of versatility and an unshakable platform for the nail aesthetics filled with femininity and captivating romance. Photos – new items, which have become illustrations for the section, represent the main directions, lines and attributes that distinguish the design of nails 2021-2022:
• New items 2021-2022 do not even try to change the leader of nail design, on the contrary, I focus on the topic that is maximum associated with women.Fashionable manicure is decorated with floral images (flowers, leaves, blades of grass), the finest lace, patterns, intricate monograms.
• The use of negative space for drawing a picture has become a nail trick. As an example, the section contains a photo of a blue manicure with a black and blue decor. On two nails, the transparent base of negative space is decorated with a thin pattern with black gel polish; the idea is successfully complemented by the elements inherent in the moon manicure and service jacket.
As an option, it is proposed to apply an abstract image of a bud and leaves on one nail with a base made using the negative space technique. The created effect of a gentle manicure is emphasized by the color of a dusty rose chosen for the look and decor with small rhinestones along the edge of the nail plate.
• Transparent drops on the surface of the manicure, which imitate dew, raindrops and splashes of water, have become an absolute nail trend. The idea has been successfully used in seasonal themes. Spring-summer looks with drops of dew, juice on fruit manicure or rainy scenes of autumn are in trend.
• Fashionistas who prefer extended nails and an original style, new items 2021-2022 offer to make a drawing with a glass on a black matte surface, to create a unique image of lines and geometric shapes. The style of geometry is perfectly combined with a black and white matte jacket, nude-silver moon manicure and floral theme.

Fashionable manicure 2021-2022 also could not do without their mysterious brilliance, hypnotic attractiveness and enchantingness. The offered photos give an idea of the novelties, which are based on the organic interweaving of shiny materials into trendy types of manicure:
• A black jacket with a nude base adorns two nails completely covered with sparkles.
Black rhinestones laid out around the pearl look organically on a black-and-white jacket.
Red jacket, designed in the form of a frame of the nail plate, has an original accent on the marigold of the ring finger in the form of a thread of rhinestones, which decrease in size as it approaches the outer edge.
• The history of the duet of sparkling decor elements and moon manicure is long-standing, but every new year pleases with novelty. Interesting and spectacular photos – new items with variations in the placement of glittering and shining decor means in the holes.
• The design of nails is relevant, in which rhinestones, sparkles, stones act as an element of the image, drawing. Butterfly wings, located on the nails, fascinate and attract attention. The variety of their colors is perfectly emphasized by the placers of multi-colored rhinestones.Rhinestones and sequins on flowers, branches, in abstract patterns allow you to create an endless variety of original and unique patterns.
• Rhinestones and stones are amazingly combined with ombre and gradient techniques, repeating the shades that are used in color transitions.
• A perfectly natural and harmonious combination of marble manicure and stones. Born by nature and combined into a single design solution, they look luxurious.
• The art of laying rhinestones on the surface of the nail gives fashionistas a nail design dominated by ideas that imitate jewelry: pieces of hot pink foil framed around the edges with rhinestones are very similar to a sparkling brooch; stones, rhinestones and pearls can convey the luxury of a precious necklace or pendant, a ring.

powder, acrygel and other replacements for gel polish
Now in every salon you can make a gel polish manicure.
What other options are there? Sorted out with Ksenia Nikolaeva, the master of manicure at the Minority Opinion salon.

What coatings for nails are, except for gel polish?
Photo: @nikki_makeup
There was a time when a manicure meant one thing: a simple varnish set with a shiny top coat. Today, manicurists are surprised when a client asks for just an uncoated manicure.
Long gone are the days of a simple manicure, which of course is still possible, but now you can also try powder, acrylic, gel and many other coatings for your nails.
Vinylux Coating
This is a varnish created by CND (Creative Nail Design varnish brand) that has a self-adhesive color coat for long-term wear, can be removed with nail polish remover and lasts up to a week without chipping. This is a hypoallergenic varnish, which is ideal for those who do not like long-lasting coatings like gel, worries about the condition of their nails and wants to change the color of their manicure more often.

Soft and hard nail gels
The main difference between the two products has to do with how they are removed.Soft gel nails are known as “absorbent gels” because nail polish can be removed with acetone. Hard gel is used to lengthen nails as opposed to soft gel, which is only used as a nail polish. Gel nails are also best for nail art.

Gel Powder
Gel Powder is a material that has been made to strengthen and build nails, and is also used as an alternative to gel polish.
A manicure with this coating is done as follows:
- A dense gel glue is applied to the nails.
- Then you dip your fingers into a very fine gel powder.
- After this coating is done 2-3 times.
- Then several layers of gel-powder are applied, which harden and dry thanks to the liquid activator.
Gel-powder is very easy to apply at home and does not require any special skills. Thanks to the non-porous material, the nails are less sensitive to external influences.Powder gel is removed with nail polish remover, lasts up to two weeks, does not fade or turn yellow during this time.

Akrigel
Combined system of gel and acrylic with the best properties of these components. Very high viscosity, non-sagging and easy handling. It can be cut well, it is more stable than gels and more plastic than acrylic. Shrinks and is suitable for any length and shape of the nail plate, is stable in storage, does not change its properties during long-term storage up to 50 degrees.
Akrigel does not have a strong chemical odor, therefore it is harmless for allergy sufferers and asthmatics, as well as for pregnant and lactating women.
In addition, acrygel, unlike conventional gel, protects the nail and strengthens it, preventing breakage and exfoliation.
Eco-varnishes Fedua
Fedua varnishes do not use harmful substances (toluene, formaldehyde, camphor, formaldehyde resins and dibutyl phthalates), and, in fact, are herbal products that are absolutely safe for your nails.
Photo: Instagram / @feduarussia Photo: Instagram / @feduarussia
The varnishes have an ideal semi-gel consistency, thanks to which they lay flat, even if applied in one layer, and the coating is durable and shiny – so forget about cracks and chips.Your manicure will be in perfect condition for up to four weeks. At Fedua, you can also find a nourishing base with algae extracts and minerals that masks minor irregularities and is ideal for protecting the nail plate.
What are the safe nail coatings?
Photo: @ ma.and.mi
Traditional nail polish has gained a bad reputation largely due to its chemical ingredients and pungent odor. In addition to irritating your senses with a pungent odor, nail polishes contain solvents and certain ingredients that can potentially cause health problems and irritation if inhaled in large quantities.Manufacturers are now doing their best to use safe materials for production.
What new types of varnishes are used for manicure now? How to replace the gel if the nail plate is too thin?
Photo: @hungvanngo
One way to strengthen the nail plate is to use acrylic powder. It saves brittle and overly soft nails. Porous in structure, it will protect thin nails from mechanical damage, frost, ultraviolet radiation and aggressive household chemicals. To strengthen the nail plate, transparent or nude acrylic powder is most often used.
90,000 causes and treatment – how to strengthen nails
Why nails become brittle
This condition refers to the so-called onychodystrophies – diseases in which the nutrition of the nail and its constituent components is disturbed. The reasons for brittle nails are extremely varied. These can be both external and internal factors that affect the entire body as a whole.
Thin brittle nails are a common problem of the fairer sex 1 . Young women often use nail polish, regularly do manicure and other cosmetic procedures on their hands, and in the postmenopausal period, disturbances in calcium-phosphorus metabolism come to the fore.
In addition, nails in women also break during breastfeeding, since important minerals (including calcium) are washed out of the mother’s body along with milk.
Among other external factors that adversely affect the condition of the nails, the following can be distinguished:
- Frequent exposure of the hands to hot water.
- Influence of household chemicals.
- Chemicals used in industry.
- Physical factors such as chronic hypothermia and frequent desiccation.
- Mechanical impact in the form of frequent trauma (for example, among musicians playing stringed instruments) 1 .
Onychochisis (splitting of the nail plate), often combined with fragility, can occur in somatic or infectious diseases. So, in men, increased brittleness of nails develops with fungal diseases that affect the fingers3. This condition can also occur with a lack of calcium in food or due to a violation of its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, with iron deficiency anemia, with a lack of vitamin A and C. Nails, especially on the toes, can exfoliate in diabetes mellitus due to the development of ” diabetic foot “, increased fragility of the walls of the capillaries of the nail bed and under the condition of prolonged compression of the toes with shoes.
Characteristics of the state and diagnostics
It is quite easy to determine the fragility of nails. Patients often complain of the plate breaking off at the free edge with a defect in all layers (sometimes only the upper one). With onychoshisis, the nail grows incorrectly – it grows normally to the free edge, and then divides into several thin plates lying on top of each other, eventually breaking off 1 .
Diagnosis and treatment of brittle nails in most cases is carried out by a dermatologist. It is not superfluous to consult a mycologist, therapist, hematologist or endocrinologist. Laboratory tests for onychodystrophies (in this case, brittle nails) most often include:
Why do we bite our nails? – BBC News Russian Service
- Tom Stafford

Nail biting is ugly, unhygienic, and if you overdo it, it hurts. So why do people do this? Problem for
BBC Future is investigated by psychologist Tom Stafford, who admits that he himself is subject to this unpleasant habit.
What do former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, singer Britney Spears and former US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy have in common? All of them selflessly bite or bite their nails.
I personally am not proud of this habit. It is unpleasant for people to watch someone bite their nails. It is unhygienic and sometimes even painful if you get carried away and bite off too much. I tried to quit this business many times, but I never succeeded.
Recently I wondered what turns people into such disgusting rodents of their own nails, like me? Are we lacking willpower? Maybe we’re just more nervous? Or hungry? What if somewhere in the annals of psychological research lies the answer to my question? Maybe there are even hints of how I can get rid of this disgusting habit?
My very first attempt to dig into the scientific literature led me to the medical term for the habit of biting nails – onychophagia.
Psychiatrists classify this habit as impulse control disorder. This mental disorder is similar to the so-called obsessive-compulsive disorder. But this applies only to severe cases when the help of a psychiatrist is needed. This category also includes cases of trichotillomania – compulsive pinching of the skin or pulling out one’s own hair.
I have not reached such a difficult stage and I belong to the majority of ordinary nail bites, in whom this habit does not lead to serious consequences.
Up to 45% of teenagers bite their nails. And many of them have no sugar in their character. But you will not declare that almost half of people at this age urgently need medical help!
I want to understand the side of the phenomenon that is not related to mental disorders. Understand the reasons for those cases when a bad habit does not become painful, but unpleasant, and therefore you want to get rid of it.
Mom is to blame
Psychotherapists, of course, have their own theories about the causes of nail biting.Sigmund Freud attributed this habit to dissatisfaction with the so-called oral stage – the period of development of a child from birth to about 18 months of age.
Photo author, Thinkstock

If you listen to Freud’s followers, all our habits stem from childhood dissatisfaction
This is typical of Freud’s theories: oral fixation is associated with many reasons, such as insufficient feeding, breastfeeding for too long or a problematic relationship with the mother.According to Freud, these problems are expressed by a whole range of symptoms – not only nail biting, but also sarcastic character, smoking, alcoholism and cravings for oral sex.
Other psychotherapists suggest that nail biting is a consequence of nervous tension or even an expression of aggression directed inward. According to their theory, this is a mild form of self-harm.
Like most psychodynamic theories in psychiatry, these explanations may be correct, but there is no absolute proof of their correctness.Even more important to me, all of these theories offer no way to break the habit.
It’s a little late for me to make adjustments to my breastfeeding, I bite my nails even when I’m completely relaxed, I find it difficult to apply any of these theories to myself, and therefore I do not see an easy solution to this problem. Not to mention that there are no examples of successful treatment based on any of these theories.
I am ready to continue my investigation, but, unfortunately, after the first encouraging finds, the trail ends.Searches in scientific libraries lead to only a few works devoted to the treatment of the habit of biting nails.
One of the works reported on the benefits of a course of treatment aimed at awareness of this bad habit. But apart from this, there is almost nothing. Some of the articles on this topic even begin with an admission: there is surprisingly little scientific literature in this area.
Emerging Habit
Given the lack of scientific research, I decided to put forward my own hypothesis of why people bite their nails and how to wean them from it.There she is. Let’s call my approach “anti-theory”.

Jacqueline Kennedy (second marriage Onassis) was considered the trendsetter of her time. That didn’t stop her from biting her nails.
My guess is that there is no reason per se to biting your nails. This is not a problem with breastfeeding in infancy, it is not chronic anxiety, or a lack of maternal love.
The advantage of my approach is that there is no need to look for similarities with me, Prime Minister Brown, the former wife of the President of the United States and performer of the song “Hit Me Baby One More Time”. Instead, I think it is more productive to assume that nail biting is simply the result of a random combination of factors causing a person to have this bad habit.
First of all, it is very easy to bring your finger to your mouth. This is one of the most frequently repetitive movements while eating or taking care of yourself. Therefore, this movement is controlled by basic, basic connections in the brain. This means that such movement can easily turn into an automatic reaction.
In addition, there is an element of “self-care” in nail biting. This way we keep the nails short. It may even seem pleasant at first, although it can ruin your nails thoroughly as a result.
This element of “reward”, combined with the ease of movement itself, means that the habit is very easy to develop. Apart from touching your genitals, it is difficult to imagine an easier opportunity to give yourself a fleeting pleasure. In addition, at school, no one pays attention to biting nails – gnaw as much as you want.
Once this habit occurs, it quickly becomes routine. And life, as you know, is full of situations when your mouth and both hands are absolutely free and there is nothing to occupy them with.

Life is full of situations when your mouth and both hands are absolutely free and there is nothing to keep them busy.
With such an explanation of the nature of this habit, there is no hope for any treatment. Most people trying to fight it lose concentration at least once a day and start biting their nails again.
In my opinion, nail biting is not a consequence of a character trait or a rudiment of any evolutionary beneficial behavior.
Nail biting is a consequence of the peculiarities of the anatomical structure of our body, how natural it is to move the hand to the mouth – both in terms of impulses in our brain and in terms of the psychology of habit.
I confess I chewed my nails when I wrote this article. As you can see, sometimes even a good theory doesn’t help.

The problem of an ingrown toenail is familiar to many. In most cases, you can cope with this trouble at home, maintaining the correct shape of the nail plate in the future. However, it happens that the advanced stage of the disease forces one to resort to surgery to remove an ingrown toenail.

Every fifth inhabitant of our planet faces such a delicate and difficult problem as an ingrown toenail. In this case, a person experiences not only physical discomfort, but also a feeling of embarrassment on the appearance of his pedicure.
To begin with, let’s define this ailment: it is a non-infectious disease (more precisely, dermatosis), in which the nail plates change their color and structure, normal cell pressure is disturbed, and vertical cell layering occurs.

90,000 Does a person need nails? (11 photos)
The world around us is still fraught with many mysteries. Moreover, you can find an interesting object for study without even leaving your home, but simply by looking at yourself. For example, nails – why do people need them?
They have several functions: protection of delicate fingertips, tactile, and also diseases can be determined by nails.
Human hands are very actively involved in his daily activities, therefore they are often endangered and need special protection. The nail plates give our fingers a stiffness, they are needed to protect the delicate skin of the fingertips, perform delicate mechanical manipulations, and even for such mundane things as scratching the crown or nose. They can pick up and hold objects, physically feel objects.
In addition, nails reflect the state of our body. For example, excessive bulging of the nail plate and a light halo at the base may be a sign of tuberculosis, white spots may indicate a violation of carbohydrate metabolism or diabetes, and blueness of the nails may indicate problems with blood vessels.
Without nails, our life would be completely different, therefore attention to them and care for their condition have existed since ancient times and are filled with a special meaning!
Oddly enough, but the function of the nail is to protect the terminal phalanges of the fingers, so as not to damage the soft tissues in which the nerve endings are located. Nails are a hard cover to protect the delicate fingertips, with which we grip various objects and physically sense the bodies around us. Nails allow us to pick up something, if the object is small, then without such solid formations it is generally difficult to grasp it.
In Central Asia and Persia, it was believed that the soul is in the nails. Therefore, the clipped nails were buried in the ground, burned, so that they would not fall into the hands of witches, would not be used for conspiracies and witchcraft. There was a number of customs when it was generally forbidden to cut nails at a certain time of the year, month, week. For example, the ancient Slavs imposed restrictions on shepherds – not to cut their hair and nails, not even to make love while grazing, observing chastity.
It is known that the total length of nails trimmed over a lifetime in men reaches 3.9 m, and in women – 4.3 m.
Nails do indeed have a protective function from a physiological point of view. And about beliefs: the ancient Scandinavians still believed that from the nails of the dead who fell in Helheim, Hel during Ragnarok would build a huge ship on which he would sail to fight with the light gods of the aces. Therefore, it was customary for the dead to cut their nails so that Hel would get less.
In the Ancient East, it was believed that each nail is associated with some organ. In particular, the thumb was associated with the brain, and the index finger could tell about the lungs and the respiratory system, the middle finger was a marker of the state of the intestine, the ring finger indicated the health of the kidneys, and the little finger – about malfunctions in the cardiovascular system and heart.
Animals, unlike humans, boast amazingly functional devices: keen eyes, fangs, claws, prehensile tails – all this provides animals with excellent survival even in the most severe conditions. A person is deprived of these adaptations, perhaps only nails remind him of his relationship with other representatives of the fauna.
It should be noted that a person is not a unique owner of nails. All primates have this organ. The fact is that primates, to which we also belong – people, most actively use limbs in their activities, and first of all hands.Obviously, on this basis, the hands of the primate are the most vulnerable and vital organ, in need of additional protection. Nail rollers prevent pathogenic bacteria from entering the growth sector of the nail and protect it from foreign bodies.
In our time, nails, to some extent having lost their original purpose, have acquired a number of new properties. For example, manicure and pedicure can be applied to them, according to their condition, a conclusion can be drawn about human health. Some owners of nails prefer to gnaw them, trying to attract fresh thoughts to their heads, or, conversely, to distract themselves from any thoughts.
A number of scientists consider nails to be an atavism, and on the feet they also consider fingers to be an atavistic remnant.
Atavisms are signs that arise in a person that were characteristic of his distant ancestors, the appearance of them in our time is explained by the fact that genes responsible for this trait are embedded in any human DNA, but they are suppressed by others and do not function.A genetic failure at one of the levels of development contributes to the manifestation of these genes, which translates into some kind of unusual property for a modern person.
At the same time, the nails perfectly protect the nerve endings located on the fingertips.
The nail, or the stratum corneum, is related in origin to the hair or outer layer of human skin, claws and hooves of animals.
The color of the nails can also tell about the state of health. A healthy person should have shiny, pink, smooth nails that match the shape of the finger. With heart disease, the nails become unnaturally pale or bluish. A pale nail hole is evidence of anemia. Opal nails (also yellow) are a symptom of serious liver problems.
Nails react to various drugs. Long-term antibiotic treatment produces yellow-brown stains on the nails, X-rays make the nails dark brown, the same result is observed in Addison’s disease. In the case of diabetic thrombosis of the arteries of the upper extremities, the nails acquire a mourning shade.
The shape of the nail plate is used to judge the character of a person. Fortune telling by nails is called onychomancy. Long nails are for those who are slow, thoughtful, distrustful, and short nails are for logical ones, prone to criticism and control. The shortest nails have irreconcilable and quick-tempered ones. The owners of short nails are characterized by rapid career growth, they are prone to leadership.
