You know you should consume a variety of nutrients for your overall health, but recent research has shown that some of the same ingredients in your daily multivitamin can ease pain, too. The reason is likely their antioxidant properties, which can prevent inflammation of and damage to the body’s tissues. Inflammation is linked to a host of chronic conditions, including pain and heart disease. Fighting inflammation might be as simple as upping your vitamin intake.

“As antioxidants, they can block free radicals that can change molecules [in the body],” says Christopher Cannon, MD, a Boston cardiologist and author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Anti-Inflammation Diet. “Otherwise, the body would see these funny-looking molecules and start to attack them, which is inflammation.”

Vitamin D. If you’ve dealt with severe menstrual cramps, you might want to double-check that you’re getting enough of the sunshine vitamin. Women who received a single high dose of vitamin D before the start of their menstrual period had 41 percent less pelvic pain than women who did not take the vitamin, plus they didn’t need their usual pain-relief medication, a small study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found. Earlier studies have shown that a shortage of D is associated with menstrual pain and that getting regular amounts of vitamin D — even less than the average recommended daily amount of 1,200 IU — reduces the chances of period pain . For vitamin D without supplements, add plenty of vitamin D-fortified milk, juice, salmon, and tuna to your diet.

Vitamin C. Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C has also been linked with pain relief — though the full story on vitamin C’s pain-reducing effects is still being written. A Dutch study of more than 400 people found that daily doses of vitamin C helped reduce pain in people with wrist fractures. However, another recent study done in England found that treatment with antioxidants, including vitamin C, did not provide pain relief for people with chronic pancreatitis from alcohol abuse. Chronic pain cure or not, eating plenty of vitamin C-rich foods is a good idea for general health . Great sources include red sweet peppers, strawberries, citrus fruits, and broccoli. The recommended daily allowance of vitamin C is 90 milligrams for men and 75 mg for women, but adults can take up to 2,000 mg daily without adverse effects.

Vitamin B12. Supplements of this B vitamin have been shown to be effective in pain management for a variety of conditions, including low-back pain and recurrent aphthous stomatitis, or mouth sores. Most people get enough B12 from their diet through animal products, such as eggs, milk, fish, and meat, and some fortified cereals . Vegans and some vegetarians should take B12 supplements to replace what they are not getting through their diet, but taking supplements beyond the recommended daily allowance of 2.4 micrograms for most adults is not suggested because a safe upper limit has not been established.

Vitamin E. Several studies suggest that vitamin E may be helpful in pain management for several conditions, including breast pain and neuropathic pain . Vitamin E might be able to reduce exercise-related damage to muscles, an Australian study found. But another study found that vitamin E supplements might pose risks, including an increased risk for prostate cancer in men . Adult men and women should aim for about 15 mg or 22.4 IU of vitamin E daily; a typical multivitamin supplement provides that amount. To boost vitamin E intake through food, use safflower or sunflower oil in recipes and munch on sunflower seeds and nuts including almonds, hazelnuts, and peanuts for nutrient-rich snacking. People on blood thinning medications should be careful not to take large amounts of vitamin E because it has been associated with increased bleeding risk. The highest safe supplement dose for adults is 1,500 IU or 1,000 mg a day.

A word of caution: Although some studies have shown these vitamins to have pain-relieving effects, you should always talk to your doctor before using them as a primary treatment for any conditions you may have. “It’s definitely not a substitute for medication,” Cannon says.

According to the Office of Dietary Supplements of the National Institutes of Health, foods that are rich in vitamin B12 include beef liver, clams, fortified breakfast cereals, wild trout, and salmon.
  • Vitamin C—sometimes referred to as ascorbic acid—may decrease the risk of the progression of osteoarthritis and back pain by repairing tissues and reducing inflammation. It also works to keep your immune system strong and accelerate the healing process. Vitamin C helps protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals—molecules responsible for aging and tissue damage. Examples of free radicals in the environment are air pollution and cigarette smoke.
Foods abundant in vitamin C include citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, etc), and other fruits and vegetables such as red peppers, broccoli, and strawberries.
  • Vitamin D is an important nutrient that builds strong bones and aids with calcium absorption (essential in preventing osteoporosis). It can also help maintain a healthy immune system and alleviate back pain by decreasing inflammation in your body. 

Vitamin D can be found in fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel, and fortified foods such as fortified breakfast cereals, breads, and milk.
  • Vitamin E may help ease back pain and soreness because it works by helping to repair damaged tissue. This vitamin also boosts immune system function, improves circulation, and aids in the healing process. Foods loaded with vitamin E include wheat germ, sunflower seeds, and almonds.

New pain reliever: 100 times stronger than morphine and does not cause addiction

American scientists have developed a drug that can revolutionize anesthesia. The new pain reliever is much more effective than morphine, but it does not have its side effects, the main of which is the development of drug dependence.

“In addition, this substance effectively blocks potential drug abuse, so we hope it can be used to treat not only pain, but also opioid dependence,” said one of the drug developers, professor of pharmacology at Wake Forest University Mei Chuan Co.

Dangerous pleasure

Today, drugs from the opioid group are the most effective means of anesthesia, and they are widely used to treat people with chronic pain of various origins.

However, by acting on the pain-reducing receptors in the brain, these drugs simultaneously stimulate the so-called pleasure center. With the regular use of opioids, patients become accustomed to the sense of pleasure, and they develop dependence on the drug.

Moreover, such dependence can be acquired after several doses of the medication, especially considering the fact that anesthetics act on different people in different ways and it is almost impossible to calculate the exact safe dose of anesthetic for each patient.

More than 2 million people in the United States abuse medicinal opioids. Last year, the US Secretary of Health declared a state of emergency to curb the national opioid crisis.

For decades, pharmacologists have tried to create a substance that can block pain without affecting the pleasure center.But it turned out to be a daunting task.

Nevertheless, several prototypes of such a drug have been developed. And the new drug seems to be a real breakthrough in this area.

“The AT-121 we have developed balances both of these functions in one molecule, and we believe this is a much better pharmaceutical strategy than taking two drugs at the same time,” explains Ko.

“A promising approach”

The results of animal experiments are impressive. In rhesus monkeys, the analgesic effect of AT-121 was comparable to the use of morphine even at a dosage of 100 times less.

At the same time, it not only did not cause addiction, but also reduced the level of drug addiction in animals accustomed to taking the opioid oxycodone.

It should be emphasized separately: all this does not guarantee that the drug will have the same effect on person.However, this probability is high.

Experiments on primates are the last stage before clinical trials of any drug in humans, and scientists are very optimistic.

“The overall results are impressive,” says Brian Roth, professor of pharmacology at the University of North Carolina. “This is certainly a very promising and promising approach.”

If clinical trials are successful, the AT-121 could show another significant advantage over medicinal opioids.

Painkillers: Common Self-Medication Mistakes

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most popular drug groups.Effective and easy to use, suitable for adults and toddlers, these formulations have taken a firm place in our medicine cabinet. But we often use them incorrectly.

For fever, pain, or inflammation?

What do paracetamol, diclofenac and aspirin have in common? All these drugs have a similar mechanism of action and belong to the same group. They are characterized by three main actions: analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory.According to their ability to reduce the inflammation process, all representatives of this group (and there are more than twenty of them) are divided into analgesics (synonymous with painkillers), for example, paracetamol and analgin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen or diclofenac. Analgesics have an anti-inflammatory effect close to zero, and for this purpose they are not used. The anti-inflammatory effect of NSAIDs is given only after 10-14 days of regular use of the drug. As a rule, such drugs are prescribed by a doctor for diseases of the joints or spine.Such situations do not belong to the category of self-medication.

When we talk about responsible self-medication, we are discussing the use of NSAIDs to solve one of two problems – relieve pain or reduce fever. You’d be surprised, but the vast majority of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are prescription drugs. But according to the results of a survey of 4000 patients of Pharmacopeyka pharmacies, it was found that 47% use prescription NSAIDs without a doctor’s prescription!

Self-medication errors

Myth number 1. Paracetamol – from fever, analgin – from toothache, and diclofenac – from back pain. In fact, all members of the group work the same way, so the action of the drugs is universal, they are effective for both fever and pain. Moreover, with pain of any localization: headache, dental or muscle pain.

Myth No. 2. “One three times a day.” However, NSAIDs are symptomatic agents, therefore, their mode of use is appropriate – “as needed”, that is, in the presence of a symptom.There is no need for course application.
