Can You Buy Amoxicillin Online? What You Need To Know

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used to help treat bacterial infections in both adults and children.

It’s been available for decades, and is one of the most commonly prescribed of all medications: More than 50 million prescriptions for amoxicillin are filled in the United States each year.

If you’re among that group, you may wonder if you can save money by filling your prescription online.

In this article, I’ll tell you more about amoxicillin, including whether you can buy it online.

I’ll also tell you when you should talk to a doctor—and how K Health can help you do so without leaving home.

What is Amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is in the class of penicillin antibiotics sold under brand names including Amoxil, Moxilin, Amoxicit, and Biomox.

It is made by pairing an extra amino group with penicillin, which helps combat resistance to the drug.

Amoxicillin works by inhibiting bacteria’s ability to grow. It is a highly effective medication with a low risk of severe side effects.

This antibiotic can be combined with potassium clavulanate (another active ingredient) in the form of amoxicillin-potassium clavulanate for better efficiency.

Your doctor may recommend using amoxicillin for any number of days.

How long it takes antibiotics to clear out an infection depends on the infection being treated, and how you take your medication.

Uses

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.

It does not work for fungal or viral infections like the common cold or flu.

Some common uses include:

  • Dental infections such as periodontitis (gum disease)
  • Ear, nose, and throat infections such a strep throat or bacterial sinusitis
  • Bacterial pneumonia
  • Urinary tract infections (often combined with clavulanic acid)
  • Lyme disease
  • Skin infections
  • Anthrax exposure
  • H. pylori infections (the bacteria that can trigger stomach ulcers)

This prescription-only medication works by stopping bacterial growth.

Taking an antibiotic like amoxicillin unnecessarily, or incorrectly, can lead to the occurrence of drug resistance, which is a situation where the medication no longer works against infections.

Dosage

Amoxicillin comes in a few forms.

Your doctor may prescribe it as a capsule, tablet, chewable tablet, or a suspension (liquid).

Typically, people take amoxicillin twice to three times a day, or every 8-12 hours, either with or without food.

For adults, teenagers, and kids who weigh more than 88 pounds, the most common dose is 250-500 mg taken every eight hours, or 500-875 mg every 12 hours.

For children, doses range from 40-90 mg per kilogram of body weight, divided into 2-3 doses per day.

No matter how much you’re taking, aim to take your amoxicillin at the same time each day.

Infections that are not severe may be treated in as little as 3 days, but the typical course of treatment is 7-10 days.

Your prescription label insert will tell you how long you should take your amoxicillin.

Patients with kidney disease do not need to take a reduced dose unless the kidney impairment is severe.

The US Food and Drug Administration recommends amoxicillin as safe for those pregnant and breastfeeding.

Pregnant and breastfeeding adults can take amoxicillin in normal doses.

Your pharmacist or prescriber will give you dosing instructions and tell you exactly how to take your medication, including whether to take it with food.

Your medication should not be stored in a humid environment, like the bathroom.

Keep it in a cool, dry place out of sunlight.

Some medications may require refrigeration. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about how to take or store your medicine.

Be sure to take amoxicillin precisely as prescribed.

If you do not, the bacterial infection may not heal, and the situation may worsen.

Missing doses could also make your medication regimen less effective or completely ineffective

If you forget to take a dose, do not panic.

If it has only been a few hours, take your dose and adjust your next ones accordingly.

If you are close to your next dose, skip your missed one and resume your schedule as normal. Never double up on amoxicillin doses.

Complete your medication regimen even if you’ve begun to feel better.

This prevents antibiotic resistance from developing.

If resistance builds up, amoxicillin will be ineffective against future bacterial infections.

new rules for pharmacies selling prescription drugs

Review of laws

On September 22, new rules for the sale of medicines in pharmacies came into force. Now it can be difficult or impossible to buy the right drug. Pharmacies require prescriptions and even take them for storage. And the medicine may not be sold to relatives at all: they will ask for a power of attorney.

We have reviewed the new rules and will explain how they work. The order of the Ministry of Health is complex and incomprehensible even for pharmacists, therefore, clarifications have already been issued to it. We also studied them.

How was it before?

Prescription drugs have always had to be sold by prescription. Each category has its own rules for selling and accounting. Such drugs are sold subject to strict federal requirements, but pharmacies have not always complied with them.

Previously, you could take one prescription and use it to buy as many medicines as you wanted. Doctors did not indicate the terms, and pharmacists did not pay attention to this. And they could take prescriptions only in rare cases and for dangerous drugs.

No one kept track of the dosages of conventional sedatives and did not note on the prescription how much and when it was already bought. And often they didn’t ask for the recipe at all.

Even if you used to buy an antibiotic, sedative or medicine for your grandmother without a prescription, this does not mean that the drug is really on sale. Even common medicines are on the prescription list, and buying them can now be a problem.

Pharmacies operate under the new rules

How is it now? Where can I buy medicines?

It depends on whether a prescription is needed and what category the drug belongs to. There are several such categories, it is pointless to study them all in advance, but you need to keep in mind.

OTC drugs can be bought at a pharmacy, drugstore, kiosk or from IP with a license. And pharmacy kiosks do not sell prescription drugs – you will have to look for a full-fledged pharmacy.

How to get a refund for treatment

Narcotic and psychotropic drugs can only be sold by pharmacies with special approval. There are certain restrictions for immunobiological preparations: for example, a vaccine for vaccinating a child can only be bought at a pharmacy and pharmacy, and only if there is a thermal container. There are also differences in prescription forms.

If the doctor has prescribed a prescription, it is better to find out in advance where you can buy it. And do not be surprised if some pharmacies do not sell the drug. This is not their whim, but the requirement of the law.

If a prescription is needed for a drug, what should I do?

You need to get this prescription, otherwise the pharmacy will not sell the drug. Even if the medicine is needed urgently or it is taken constantly, and there is no time to go to the doctor, it still will not sell. Maybe in some cities there are pharmacies that manage to circumvent the rules, but it’s better not to count on this: the law is the law.

How to treat your teeth in a private clinic free of charge

If you need a prescription for a medicine, you will have to present it at the pharmacy. And the pharmacy has the right to take this prescription if it is required by the new rules. That is, it will not be possible to buy this medicine for the second time using the same prescription.

Recipes are also divided into several types. There are recipes for one time, urgent, for a free vacation, and various others. The prescription may be valid for several days, months or a year. You can buy a prescription medicine only while it is valid. The pharmacy can take it away permanently or return it with a note: how much and when it was sold, in what dosage and for how long it will last.

Can I buy a spare? More antibiotics, painkillers and blood pressure pills.

No, it is not possible to buy in reserve now. According to the rules, a prescription will sell as much of the drug as prescribed by the doctor.

For some drugs, limit values are set. Even if more is needed for a course of treatment, only this amount will be sold.

How the CHI policy works

Pharmacists should follow this. Even if you ask the doctor for a prescription with a margin, the pharmacy will not sell that much, and even report a violation.

How do I know how long a prescription is valid?

Not all prescriptions have an expiration date. Some doctors don’t pay attention to this, but pharmacists didn’t care at all: the main thing is that there is a prescription.

Now this is important. The validity of prescriptions is set by the Ministry of Health – this is written in orders.

para. 1.16 and 1.17 of the order of the Ministry of Health No. 110

paragraphs. 20-23 Order of the Ministry of Health No. 1175n

Pharmacists must follow the deadlines and report violations if they are found.

So now the prescription will be taken away? And will you have to go for a new one every time?

Pharmacies must collect and store prescriptions for certain drugs. They are listed in clause 14 of the new rules. Read and check the instructions for medicines. Suddenly this is your case.

If you or someone in your family regularly takes these medicines, you will need to go to get a new prescription for every batch. Even if these pills are needed all the time – for example, painkillers for a seriously ill person. Or sleeping pills and sedatives for regular use. The situation is the same with alcohol-containing drugs – the prescription will remain in the pharmacy.

Whether it is possible to write out a prescription not for one time, but for a long period, the doctor decides and pharmacies check.

If the prescription is issued for a year, will it also be taken away? Will I have to go to the same pharmacy all the time or get a new prescription every time?

No, this prescription will not be taken away. Although there are rumors that they are being taken away. Don’t believe rumors – read the law. They can pick it up only if the prescription was issued before September 22, and then the sales rules for this drug changed.

How to deal with prescriptions for a long time is written in paragraph 10 of the new rules.

When a pharmacy sells a prescription drug that is valid for a year, the pharmacist must note when and how much the drug was sold. And the prescription is returned. The next time this prescription will be sold again in the right amount of medicine: past sales will be taken into account and marked again.

When the prescription expires, it will no longer be possible to buy medicine with it. If the prescription is to be kept, the pharmacy will collect it. If you don’t need to store it, they will give it back, but you still won’t be able to use it.

What are the rules for the sale of vaccines?

The vaccination vaccine will be sold only if the buyer has a thermal container. It is impossible to deliver it to the clinic in an ordinary bag: the vaccine will deteriorate and the vaccine will be useless.

You can buy a container directly from the pharmacy.
