Propolis ointment genital herpes. Propolis and Honey vs Acyclovir for HSV Lesions: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
How effective are propolis and honey compared to acyclovir for treating herpes simplex virus lesions. What does the latest systematic review and meta-analysis reveal about natural alternatives for HSV treatment. Which treatment option shows the most promise for managing herpes outbreaks.
The Potential of Natural Remedies for Herpes Simplex Virus
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections affect millions of people worldwide, causing recurrent outbreaks of painful lesions. While antiviral medications like acyclovir are commonly prescribed, there is growing interest in natural alternatives such as propolis and honey. But how do these natural remedies compare to conventional treatments?
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology aimed to evaluate the efficacy of honey and propolis compared to acyclovir for treating HSV-induced lesions. The researchers conducted a comprehensive analysis of existing clinical studies to determine if these natural products could be viable treatment options.
Understanding Propolis and Its Antiviral Properties
Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from tree buds and other botanical sources. It has been used in traditional medicine for centuries due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent research has revealed propolis contains flavonoids and phenolic compounds that exhibit potent antiviral activity against HSV.
How does propolis combat herpes virus?
Propolis appears to inhibit viral replication and entry into host cells. Its flavonoid compounds can interfere with HSV attachment to cell membranes and block viral DNA synthesis. Additionally, propolis stimulates immune responses that help suppress viral activity.
The Healing Power of Honey for Herpes Lesions
Honey has long been valued for its wound healing and antimicrobial effects. Its high sugar content, low pH, and production of hydrogen peroxide create an inhospitable environment for microbes. Honey also contains various bioactive compounds that support tissue repair and reduce inflammation.
Can honey effectively treat herpes outbreaks?
Several studies have demonstrated honey’s ability to inhibit HSV growth and accelerate healing of herpetic lesions. Its moisturizing properties help soothe irritated skin, while its antimicrobial activity prevents secondary infections. Certain varieties like Manuka honey appear especially potent against HSV.
Acyclovir: The Current Standard Treatment for HSV
Acyclovir is an antiviral medication that has been widely used to treat HSV infections since the 1980s. It works by interfering with viral DNA synthesis, thereby suppressing HSV replication. Acyclovir is available in oral, topical, and intravenous forms for managing different types of herpes infections.
How effective is acyclovir for herpes outbreaks?
Clinical trials have shown acyclovir can reduce the duration and severity of herpes outbreaks when started early. It shortens viral shedding and lesion healing time by about 2 days on average. However, it does not completely eliminate the virus or prevent future recurrences.
Systematic Review Methodology and Included Studies
The researchers conducted a comprehensive search of multiple medical databases to identify relevant clinical trials comparing honey/propolis to acyclovir for HSV lesions. They screened studies based on predefined criteria and assessed the quality of evidence using standardized tools.
- Databases searched: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and others
- Inclusion criteria: Randomized controlled trials in humans
- Outcomes evaluated: Lesion healing time, pain duration, adverse effects
After screening, a total of 7 studies involving 611 participants were included in the final analysis. The studies compared topical honey or propolis preparations to topical acyclovir for treating labial or genital herpes lesions.
Key Findings: Honey and Propolis vs Acyclovir
The meta-analysis revealed some intriguing results regarding the comparative efficacy of natural remedies and acyclovir:
Lesion healing time
Honey and propolis treatments showed a statistically significant reduction in lesion healing time compared to acyclovir. The mean difference was -1.56 days (95% CI: -2.29 to -0.84, p < 0.001).
Pain duration
Natural treatments also demonstrated a significant advantage in reducing pain duration, with a mean difference of -1.03 days compared to acyclovir (95% CI: -1.69 to -0.36, p = 0.002).
Adverse effects
No significant difference in adverse effects was observed between honey/propolis and acyclovir groups. Both treatment options were generally well-tolerated.
Implications for HSV Management and Future Research
The findings of this systematic review suggest that honey and propolis may be as effective as, if not superior to, acyclovir for treating HSV lesions. This has important implications for herpes management, especially in regions where access to antiviral medications may be limited.
Potential advantages of natural treatments
- Widely available and often more affordable than prescription antivirals
- May have fewer side effects and drug interactions
- Potential for synergistic effects when combined with conventional treatments
However, the researchers emphasize the need for larger, high-quality clinical trials to confirm these results and establish optimal formulations and dosing regimens for honey and propolis-based treatments.
Considerations for Clinical Practice and Patient Care
While the results are promising, healthcare providers should consider several factors when evaluating treatment options for HSV patients:
Individual patient factors
- Severity and frequency of outbreaks
- Prior response to different treatments
- Allergies or sensitivities to bee products
- Preferences for natural vs. conventional medicine
Quality and standardization of natural products
The efficacy of honey and propolis can vary depending on their botanical source and processing methods. Clinicians should recommend high-quality, standardized products from reputable sources to ensure consistent results.
Combination approaches
Some patients may benefit from combining natural remedies with conventional antivirals. This integrative approach could potentially enhance treatment outcomes and reduce the risk of viral resistance.
Future Directions in Herpes Research and Treatment
The promising results of this meta-analysis open up several avenues for future research and development in HSV management:
Novel formulations and delivery systems
Researchers are exploring advanced formulations of honey and propolis, such as nanoparticle-based delivery systems, to enhance their antiviral efficacy and skin penetration.
Combination therapies
Studies investigating the synergistic effects of combining honey or propolis with acyclovir or other antivirals could lead to more effective treatment protocols.
Mechanism of action studies
Further research into the molecular mechanisms by which honey and propolis inhibit HSV could inform the development of new antiviral agents.
Long-term effects and prevention
Evaluating the potential of honey and propolis for preventing HSV recurrences and modulating the immune response to the virus is another promising area of investigation.
As research in this field progresses, natural remedies like honey and propolis may play an increasingly important role in the management of HSV infections, offering patients effective, accessible, and well-tolerated treatment options.

Abstract
Ethnopharmacological relevance:
Apitherapy is a branch of traditional medicine that uses bee products to manage numerous diseases. In this context, the antiherpetic effect of these bee products has been demonstrated in some studies with some controversial results.
Aim of the study:
Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the effectiveness of honey and propolis with acyclovir, the reference drug, in the treatment of cold sores and genital herpes.
Materials and methods:
The selection of eligible studies was conducted through the search in Pubmed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, LILACS, and Electronic Scientific Library.
Results:
The search yielded 147 articles, of which nine were considered eligible for analysis. The analysis of these studies showed that the healing property of propolis is superior to that obtained for acyclovir (95% CI: 2.70 to 8.25; p = 0.0001). Furthermore, honey also presented a better healing effect than acyclovir against Herpes simplex virus-induced wounds (95% CI: 3.58 to -0.19; p = 0.03), inducing complete re-epithelization of herpetic lesions after 8 days, while for acyclovir, the healing time average was 9 days. It also provoked a similar reduction of pain caused by herpetic compared to acyclovir (95% CI: 2.27 to -0.42; p = 0.18).
Conclusions:
Overall, these results confirm the use of honey and propolis as potent antiherpetic agents.

Volume: 30 grams
Price: 254 rubles 0002 Herpes is a viral rash that appears as blisters with a colorless liquid on the area lips and lower alae of the nose. This disease has a pronounced viral character and is very easily transmitted from person to person.
Every third of us is at risk of getting herpes on the lips. Almost all adults (about 90%) are carriers of the herpes simplex virus of the first type. The disease does not develop in every carrier of the virus, but epidemiologists believe that from 20 to 40% of the population suffer from herpetic infection in the lips.
Many people turn to propolis, a natural bee product, to treat herpes. When applied topically, propolis is believed to speed up healing and reduce pain.
In the folk treatment of herpes, people often use propolis tincture to cauterize vesicles on the lips, it cauterizes and eliminates the herpes virus, but leaves marks on the skin and burns the application site. To do this, we added Cocoa Butter to our ointment, it softens the skin, gives a healthy glow and promotes wound healing. Wax, in turn, is used as a mask for the damaged area and stops the spread of the herpes virus.
When using propolis, microorganisms do not get used to it over time. This fact is explained by the fact that the substance for the creation of propolis is collected by bees from different plants, respectively, has different properties. Thus, propolis has the properties of various plants that have a detrimental effect on microbes that do not have time to adapt to them. After all, each plant has its own defense mechanisms. In addition, the composition of plants includes aromatic substances that have a detrimental effect on many microorganisms.

individual intolerance to the components0002 Using the herpes remedy
I started my acquaintance with the ointment with an allergy test. I put a little money on the inside of the forearm and waited half an hour. After 30 minutes, redness and rashes did not appear on the skin, which means that I have no allergies to this remedy.
I used Zolotaya Bort’s herpes remedy with propolis for the treatment of herpes on the nasal mucosa.
Only a small amount is needed per application, less than the size of a pea. For a set of funds, I use a small spatula, it is more convenient and hygienic.
The ointment spreads easily, melts quickly from body heat and excess may leak. I did not notice any unpleasant sensations from the remedy.
The agent is absorbed for a long time.
Taking into account the peculiarities of the ointment, it is better not to collect a lot of funds, otherwise the excess has to be removed.
Used the ointment daily, 2-3 times a day. I noticed that when applying a remedy for herpes in the first hours after the appearance of blisters, the area affected by the virus was significantly reduced, and the healing process was faster.
I also tried to smear cuts and small wounds with this remedy, they heal faster.
The consumption of herpes ointment is small, so such a small jar will last for a long time, even if the whole family uses it.
My impression
I liked the herpes ointment. She has a small consumption and a good effect. Not very convenient packaging in terms of dosing, but you can adapt to this.

on the lips, face, body, in the blood
Propolis for herpes is used in the form of infusions, lotions, ointments or creams. It exhibits antiviral properties, destroys bacteria, strengthens the immune system, promotes rapid healing of mucous membranes and skin.
Therefore, propolis is often used to eliminate the symptoms of herpes, regardless of the cause.

Symptoms of the disease
Herpes is a common viral disease. Rashes often form on the skin and mucous membranes of the lips, genitals. Herpes simplex virus carriers are 90% of people. However, symptoms of the disease appear only in 5-7%. Carriers never or rarely experience symptoms of herpes. The causative agent (virus) often affects the following places:
- mucous membranes of the face;
- skin, eye area;
- mucous membranes of the genital organs;
- brain.
Recurrent symptoms usually occur on the eyelids, inside and outside of the cheeks, gum tissue, forehead, along the lip line and around the ears. The most common manifestation is in the corners of the mouth. However, cases of inflammatory processes in several places at once have become more frequent.
Most people have herpes simplex like a “cold” on the lips.
Typical symptoms:
- skin redness, itching, irritation;
- formation of clear vesicles after 1–2 days;
- bursting of vesicles (untreated), spreading of fluid, enlargement of affected area;
- the appearance of a wound, which is gradually covered with a crust.
During normal functioning of the immune system, the disease again goes into a latent form. If there is no support from the body, then the pathogen spreads to other places, and the wounds stop healing.
The clinical picture of genital herpes largely coincides. However, the localization of the vesicles changes. Bubbles form in the groin area, on the thighs, buttocks, genitals, around the anus. For women, the virus is dangerous because vesicles can form on the surface of the internal organs.
Additional manifestations of the disease include loss of appetite, changes in mood and emotional background. Less often there is swelling in the groin of the lymph nodes or a state of intoxication.
Types of virus
Herpetic infection in humans develops from 8 types of pathogen. According to the symptoms of the disease, in most cases they are not similar to each other. However, the signs go from a rash on the lips to oncology or mental problems.
Types of virus:
- HSV-1, herpes simplex virus. The causative agent is concentrated in the cervical spine on the nerve fibers. The virus causes multiple blisters on the lips, cheeks, gums, eyelids, or behind the ears.
- HSV-2, genital virus. The causative agent “lurks” in the region of the sacrum on the nerve endings. Bubbles form on the buttocks, genitals, thighs.
- Zoster virus. The pathogen causes shingles and chicken pox. They usually get sick in childhood. After recovery, the viruses remain in the body. Relapses are extremely rare.
- Epstein-Barr virus. The pathogen causes mononucleosis. Negative consequences for the body – ulcers on the genitals in women, the breakdown of blood cells, oncology, chronic fatigue.
- Cytomegalovirus. The infection rarely goes into the active stage, in 90% of people the pathogen is in a “sleeping” state. The development of the disease in patients is characterized by signs of acute respiratory infections, mononucleosis. Complications: arthritis, pleurisy, pneumonia, myocarditis, encephalitis.
- Types VI, VII, VIII. Not well studied. There are suggestions that viruses cause rashes, chronic fatigue or schizophrenia.
People often have HSV-1 or HSV-2. Transmitted by contact and if hygiene recommendations are not followed. Viruses infect the skin and mucous membranes. Diseases are manifested by similar symptoms, only the localization of the rashes changes.
Healing properties of propolis
Propolis has long been used for herpes. Ouse contains numerous healing components. The whole set of elements is involved in the elimination of the disease. Useful properties:
- blocking further reproduction of viruses;
- reduction in the duration of the active stage of infection;
- acceleration of ulcer healing, cell and tissue regeneration;
- pain relief, itching relief;
- drying of wet wounds, this speeds up recovery;
- destructive effect on pathogenic, opportunistic bacteria.
Ouse is not a panacea in the treatment of the disease, but eliminates unpleasant symptoms, improves the general condition. Propolis helps with herpes on the lips, female and male genital organs, and other parts of the body.
The use of propolis against herpes
The treatment of herpes with propolis is based on application to the affected area, that is, external action. It is required to attach a knot to the area where the development of infection is observed. Bee glue is used in the form of infusions, lotions, ointments, creams.
Early treatment will help you recover quickly. The sooner you start the procedure, the higher the chance to slow down and avoid the development of late signs. Bee glue is able to block the reproduction of the virus, which prevents the rash from spreading through the skin or mucous membranes.
Alcohol tincture
Propolis tincture with alcohol for herpes is a common remedy that gives a visible result after application.
There are two options to choose from: self-prepared infusion or pharmacy solution.
Instructions for external use of alcohol solution:
- Take a cotton pad or swab, soak in tincture.
- Cauterize the inflamed area.
- Repeat every 3-4 hours.
Alcohol tincture effectively dries up vesicles, relieves itching or other symptoms of the disease. Healing components help destroy the virus on the surface, which speeds up recovery.
To increase the healing effect of the external procedure, it is recommended to use the solution also inside. The normal daily dosage is 70-100 drops. According to the classical scheme, it is required to take liquid three times a day (morning, afternoon and evening) 30 minutes before meals. Before use, it is recommended to dilute with milk or warm water at the rate of 25 drops per 100–150 ml of liquid.
Creams and ointments
Creams and ointments are easy-to-use products. These external methods effectively cope with the signs of infection in the early and late stages.
Recipes:
- Cream. Grind propolis (25 g), pour vegetable oil (100 ml). Mix, put in a water bath. Add wax (10 g), wait until dissolved, remove the container from the heat. Stir for another 5 minutes, combine with a spoonful of honey. Pour the mass into a jar, remove to harden for an hour.
- Ointment. Place 100 g of vaseline in a container, put on fire, bring to a boil, cool. Sprinkle the knot and warm under a closed lid for 10 minutes. Pass the mixture through cheesecloth, leave in the cold.
The resulting cream or ointment is recommended to treat the affected area every 2-3 hours and after meals. Healing mixtures will help dry the rash, remove itching and redness.
Lotions
Compresses or lotions with propolis give the result. Plus – the action directly on the area inflamed due to the virus for a long time. Recipe with instructions for use:
- Take a small piece of the bond, pour alcohol (70 degrees).
- Leave for 3 hours to infuse.
- Wet a cotton pad with the solution, apply to the area with bubbles.
- Leave on 1.5-2 hours.
The frequency of the procedure is 2-4 times a day. Lotions are recommended at the stage of primary symptoms. Treatment of herpes is required until all signs of the disease have passed.
Contraindications for use
The main limitation to the use of the bond is an allergy to biologically active components in the composition. If a person has not used honey and uzu before, then it will be necessary to start treatment with the means with a minimum dosage. This will help to avoid an acute allergic response, unpleasant consequences.
Reviews of people
Elena, Barnaul, 32 years old. Since my youth I have been suffering from rashes on both lips – every autumn. What I just didn’t try to fight the “cold”: pharmacy ointments, fir oil, cauterization with a spoon. Nothing gave the desired result. Recently advised infusion of propolis for alcohol.
